Hello We are delighted to introduce Black Dog Publishing’s Spring 2017 catalogue, which includes exciting new titles, recent bestsellers and our inspired backlist. The new titles for the Spring season include Rebel, Jester, Mystic, Poet, which tells the story of the evolution of Iranian contemporary art by examining the work of 30 artists; Into the Culture Cave, which documents the 17 days in June 2016 that the Luminato Festival transformed the Hearn Generating Station in the Port Lands in Toronto into the largest temporary cultural and community centre in the world; and The Artist’s Studio, which brings together a body of work made by photographer Joseph Hartman since 2013, offering a glimpse inside the working space of some of Canada’s most prominent contemporary artists. The lavishly illustrated title Susan Point: Spindle Whorl documents and contextualises the works that employ the spindle whorl by the Coast Salish artist Susan Point. Barbara Nicholls: Sedimentary Flow is the first substantial publication on the British artist Barbara Nicholls, who has been producing monumental watercolour works for over 30 years. Finally, Territories: Brenda Francis Pelkey explores the documentary photography of Brenda Francis Pelkey, which is known to focus on spaces where women are not traditionally allowed to go, from the spectator seats at strip clubs to forests at night-time. Generator of Art and Community, Emotions and Ideas Editor: Jörn Weisbrodt The Hearn Generating Station is enormous; three times the size of Tate Modern, it could fit the Statue of Liberty in it standing upright. Since 1983, the space has been decommissioned, and, save serving briefly as a location for movie shoots for Robocop and Pacific Rim, has been closed to the public. It took Luminato Festival to realise the radical potential of the space. In June 2016, the Festival took the Hearn Generating Station over for 17 days and transformed it into the largest temporary cultural and community centre in the world. In one space reminiscent of an expansive cave, the earliest form of human shelter, large-scale exhibitions, parkour workout sessions, drag queen shows and many more event-based installations unfolded. Into the Culture Cave does not simply document the Luminato Festival’s use of the Hearn Generating Station space. Rather, it outlines how this can be utilised as a model for other multidisciplinary cultural institutions of the twentyfirst century. Similar institutions such as the Barbican still delineate architecture in space rather than time. Into the Culture Cave demonstrates how this rule can be inverted and how, without relying on temporary infrastructure, one space can enable a broad scope of human activity. This title is edited by Jörn Weisbrodt (former Artistic Director of the Luminato Festival) and includes contributions from Rufus Wainwright (composer, singer-songwriter), Mat Shulz (founder and Artistic Director of Unsound Festival, Krakow) and Atom Egoyan (the filmmaker behind Steenbeckett, p 34).

Rebel, Jester, Mystic, Poet tells the story of the evolution of Iranian contemporary art by examining the work of 30 artists. This is art where the ills of internal politics remain astutely masked below a layer of ornamentation. What unites the disparate works into a coherent theme is the artists’ coping mechanisms, which consist of subversive critique, quiet rebellion, humour, mysticism and poetry—hence the publication‘s title. The subtitle Contemporary Persians is also a reference to a strategy of survival used by Iranians in the United States during the early 2000s; at a time when Iranians were identified with hostage takers and terrorists, they adopted the identity “Persians”, which remained free of such associations. This publication brings together material from the eponymous arts programme staged at ICA Studio in 2015. A revival of Mark Francis and Jay Jopling’s fig-1 project that took place in 2000, fig-2 staged 50 week-long residencies with contemporary artists, with the artists only announced the week before their exhibition. Under the curation of Fatos Ustek, curator of the 10th Gwangju Biennale, fig-2 offered a programme that spanned visual arts, literature, science, fashion, design and performance, with contributors ranging from activists, architects and actors to dancers, sculptors, speakers and even a cybernetics expert. Contributors included Adam Broomberg & Oliver Chanarin, Suzanne Treister, Anne Hardy, FOS and Eva Rothschild. Each of the 50 exhibitions is presented in the publication, as well as a series of artist interviews, curatorial texts and images of the work or performance in-situ. Italian-born, Canada-based documentary photographer Vincenzo Pietropaolo has made it his life’s mission to photograph workingclass culture and the immigrant experience. In Ritual, he brings together a retrospective collection of 150 photographs taken over four decades. The book is an historic documentation of the Good Friday procession—an elaborate event that takes place annually in the streets of Toronto’s Little Italy. Consisting of multiple re-enactments with live actors and statues of Biblical tableaux vivants that depict the Via Crucis (Way of the Cross), the event is the emotional high point of the community’s calendar, and the largest such event anywhere in the world. The book’s lavish selection of images are accompanied by an essay from Pietropaolo, discussing the history of the procession and his life as an Italian immigrant. Pietropaolo is renowned for his use of documentary photography as a tool to draw attention to social issues; Geist claims that his work “is a brilliant example of photography at its most communicative”. His work features in the permanent collection of the Canadian Museum of Human Rights.

Spindle Whorl Editors: Ian Thom, Grant Arnold Foreword: Kathleen S Bartels Born in British Columbia, Susan Point is an artist who works using a spindle whorl in the tradition of Indigenous Coast Salish art. Point grew up on the Musqueam Indian Reserve, joining a group of artists interested in reviving the traditions of Coast Salish art and design in the 1980s and subsequently tought herself how to create artworks using a spindle whorl (a carved, circular plate attached to a wooden spindle). The versatility of the spindle whorl is demonstrated by its multifaceted use in Point’s work, from two-dimensional pieces (such as paper screen prints) to the traditional threedimensional media of glass, rawhide drums, wool, and wood carvings. Point’s mixed-media use of the spindle whorl is widely credited as having introduced the tool into modern art practice. This title is part of a wider Black Dog Publishing project that aims to document and celebrate the work of Indigenous Canadian artists such as Tony Anguhalluq (Rocky Grassy Mountain in June), Charles Edenshaw (Charles Edenshaw), Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas (The Seriousness of Play) and Kent Monkman (The Four Continents). This survey of Point’s work has been curated by Grant Arnold (Curator of British Columbia Art at the Vancouver Art Gallery) and Ian Thom (Senior Curator at the Vancouver Art Gallery), with a commentary discussing the spindle whorl in the broader context of Canadian modern art by Kathleen Bartels (Director of the Vancouver Art Gallery).

The Four Continents presents in full, with gatefolds, the largescale works that comprise Kent Monkman’s suite of paintings entitled The Four Continents, a reworking of Tiepolo’s Apollo and the Four Continents. Monkman’s works examine the way Indigenous American and Canadian history has been presented by nineteenth- and twentieth-century artists. He constructs new stories through images that take into account the missing narratives and perspectives of Aboriginal peoples; the result is a series of tragicomic scenarios that are mythical, graphic, satirical and inherently anti-colonialist. Many feature strong queer or gay male imagery, which have always been a part of Aboriginal culture due to “two-spirit” Indigenous sexualities, yet have rarely been acknowledged as such. Kent Monkman is a Canadian artist of Cree ancestry who works with a variety of mediums, including painting, film/ video, performance and installation. He has had exhibitions at numerous major museums worldwide, including Witte de With, Rotterdam; The Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art, Toronto; and MASS MoCA, Massachusetts, USA. Atom Egoyan Editors: Timothy Long, Christine Ramsay, Elizabeth Matheson Atom Egoyan is one of the most successful independent filmmakers to emerge from Canada. In addition to his award-winning films he has also directed for both opera and the stage, and created compelling lens-based installation art. Commissioned by Artangel, Steenbeckett saw Egoyan transform a space in the former Museum of Man in London using excerpts of 35mm footage, and it remains his most important installation to date. Steenbeckett is the first publication to explore this impressive work. Steenbeckett included footage from Egoyan’s film version of Samuel Beckett’s Krapp’s Last Tape, which he had made for the project Beckett on Film, 2001. The film involves a haunted ageing man reviewing and reflecting upon selfmade tape recordings he made earlier in life, and is played on DVD in one room, whilst another room includes a jumbled collection of old furniture, cabinets and film equipment nostalgically evoking the history of film. The installation contemplates the nature of memory, and explores Egoyan’s fascination with the obsolescence of technology, the divide of analogue/digital and changing contexts of presentation. The publication accompanies an exhibition of this important installation, and includes critical texts documenting and analysing the work, plus an extended interview with the artist. Steenbeckett provides a unique and interesting insight into the internationally renowned filmmaker and lens-based installation artist.

With a focus on the construction, projection and manipulation of identity, this first evaluation of Irish artist and filmmaker Kevin Gaffney’s work takes the reader on a journey across vast and manifold landscapes. Five of Gaffney’s films are divided into a series of richly illustrated sections of the book that explore the methodology and vision behind each work. The subjects examined range from daily life in Iran to former mining sites in Ireland, military conscription in Taiwan, and physical and emotional distance between people living in South Korea. Gaffney’s style moves fluidly between pastiche and allegory, setting the scene in a near-dystopian future or calling for a half-remembered past. One recent work, A Numbness in the Mouth, imagines his native Ireland as a flourishing nationalist future state after a shift in climate change, where there is an agricultural surplus of flour, of which citizens must consume five pounds per day. This has unavoidable resonances of Ireland’s tragic past, ironically inverting the problems of the nineteenth-century famine and magnifying the reverberations of rising militarism and nationalism in the twentieth century by staging a newscast in Gaelic. Unseen By My Open Eyes includes English film transcripts, together with an annex of Korean, Chinese, Persian and Gaeilge (Irish Gaelic) scripts, and an analysis by the acclaimed Irish critic, Caoimhín Mac Giolla Léith. Gaffney was the first Irish recipient of a Sky Academy Arts Scholarship in 2015, and his work features in the Irish Museum of Modern Art’s collection.

The Eiffel Tower, Seattle Space Needle and New York’s Unisphere are familiar, iconic architectural sights that remain from a longstanding tradition of countries hosting enormous public exhibitions known as world’s fairs. Photographer Jade Doskow is interested in documenting what remains of these heritage sites, but also the relics of less notable attractions from world’s fairs that have been repurposed or left to decline. Doskow’s Lost Utopias project juxtaposes emblematic monuments with sad and abandoned decaying structures, provoking the viewer to consider how idealistic feats of architecture can either succeed or disappear into obscurity. Contextualised by essays from the English photographer Richard Pare and American academic Jennifer Minner, with a glossary list of the world’s fair sites, the book presents a selection of Doskow’s enchanting and dream-like photographs of the world exposition sites. It also raises questions about the future of these sites, the significance of architecture and which structures are worth preserving, and what place, if any, there is for the legacy of these world’s fairs in today’s society. Jade Doskow is based in Brooklyn, New York and is currently on the photography faculty of the School of Visual Arts and the International Center of Photography. She was recently named by American Photo as “one to watch”.

Volker Eichelmann with Stephen Tennant

Throughout his life, Stephen Tennant (1906–1987), a decadent socialite, modernist, dandy and ‘the brightest’ of the “Bright Young People”, contemplated a novel about “high life with a capital H and full of crude impossibilities”. Despite his elaborate preparations, the book itself never materialised. Yet, over the course of his life—sequestered in a manor in the English countryside decorated with fishnets, pink satin and golden conch shells, his hair long and died mauve—Tennant produced abundant drawings of potential covers for the book he was never to write. In Gutters of Gold, the artist Volker Eichelmann has responded to Tennant’s drawings with his own series of freewheeling, evocative paintings and collages. In so doing, and in combining his images with Tennant’s, Eichelmann has finally realised Tennant’s long-dreamed-of book. As an artist’s publication, Gutters of Gold innovatively highlights and expands on preoccupations shared by both Tennant and Eichelmann, such as hedonism, Modernism, and, unusually, how these two concepts can play out in the countryside rather than in an urban landscape. This title is being published to coincide with an exhibition of Tennant and Eichelmann’s work at Black Dog Publishing's affiliate Gallery, WORK, in November 2016.

Drawings/Tony Anguhalluq Authors: Robert Kardosh, Tony Anguhalluq Bringing together a body of work produced across the last decade, Rocky Grassy Mountain in June presents the unique drawing style of the Inuit artist Tony Anguhalluq. Raised in the Nunavut community of Baker Lake by the prominent artists Luke Anguhadluq and his wife Marion Tuu'luq, Anguhalluq has developed a distinctive artistic expression, choosing to reduce the forms of the landscape to near abstraction and frequently employing aerial and side views in the same image. Whilst he primarily focuses on the Arctic landscape, there is often a human or animal presence discernible in his work. In combining a nonrepresentational technique (his landscapes are often conceived as interlocking patterns of heavily outlined, solidly coloured silhouettes) with the use of horizon lines as a compositional convention, many of Anguhalluq’s images feature an expressive tension between the flat picture and an illusive pictorial depth. The exuberant and colourful artwork in the book is explored through an essay by Robert Kardosh (Director/ Curator of Marion Scott Gallery and Kardosh Projects). Born in 1970, Anguhalluq has exhibited widely across North America and his work is included in the collections of the Art Gallery of Ontario and the National Gallery of Canada, amongst many others.

Public Enquiries demonstrates how artistic practice can change, inform and shape public policy towards urban landscapes. A series of public hearings were held in Stockholm, Copenhagen and Gothenburg in 2015–2016 as part of a multidisciplinary research project that discussed the artist Kerstin Bergendal’s work PARK LEK, 2010–2014, a utopian art project originally proposed in Stockholm. Public Enquiries maps how PARK LEK intervened in and transformed the local government planning processes used to shape segregated urban areas. It also examines the role of the artist in the context of public space, design constructs and social platforms, ultimately suggesting that the project can be seen as a blueprint for the agency of artistic practice in reconstructing local democracy worldwide. In 1988, to mark the 150th anniversary of the invention of photography, the city of Montreal designated six streets within a new housing development in Rivière-desPrairies-Pointe-aux-Trembles to be named after important historical photographers from Montreal. Plans for the new neighbourhood were drawn up and the names of William Notman, Ovilla Allard, George Arless, Edgar Gariépy, Conrad Poirer and Alexander Henderson found their place onto the official map of the city. They remained there for the ensuing 19 years until 2007, when the Montreal administration finally admitted that the streets were never going to be built and removed the photographers’ names from the maps. Today, the designated area remains a wasteland, though, eerily, the shape of the developments, as well as all of the photographer-based street names, still appear on Google Maps. Photographer Velibor Božovic’ ’ s work focuses on the curious story of this development that never was, using it as a jumping-off point to explore Montreal's broader relationship to its own visual history. Nothing Will Surprise You Here collects Božovic’ ’ s photographs, stills and scripts from his short films, archival material and copies of real and online maps, using them to tell a surprisingly relatable story of how places need not be physically realised in order to impact the people who intellectually interact with them.

Sam Durant The Meeting House brings together material from American multimedia artist Sam Durant’s project of the same name, which acts as a platform for inspiring new ideas in relation to the intractable structures of racial discrimination and segregation. Sam Durant’s project, The Meeting House, takes place between The Old Manse, a historic house where leading thinkers such as Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau and Margaret Fuller discussed the issues of the day, including abolitionist debates, and the Minuteman National Park where the American Revolutionary War began in 1775. The project acts as a platform for inspiring new ideas in relation to the intractable structures of racial discrimination and segregation. Based on houses constructed by the first free Africans in late eighteenth-century Concord, Massachusetts, the pavilion structure creates an open, transparent framework oriented to the future. Presented as a series of booklets in a folding slipcase, The Meeting House documents a series of programmes that invite visitors to participate in a dialogue about the issues brought to light by Durant’s thought-provoking project. These programmes include workshops, readings and discussions focused on African-American writing, philosophy, music, food and spirituality. Sam Durant has exhibited widely in the US, as well as internationally; his work can be found in many public collections including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA); the Art Gallery of Western Australia, Perth; Tate Modern, London; Project Row Houses, Houston; and the Museum of Modern Art, New York. What makes Vancouver special? In late 2016, the Vancouver Art Gallery will explore this question by launching a new triennial exhibition that surveys the cultural impact of artistic production in the local scene over the last five years. This accompanying publication showcases the work of 40 artists, from Kim Dorland’s layered paintings of Canada by night to Tamara Henderson’s lopsided multimedia sculpture The Scarecrow’s Holiday; Tiziana La Melia’s LED-illuminated painted aluminium to Ryan Peter’s silver gelatin prints. The strong connection with art unique to the region is evident even in the title itself: “ambivalent pleasures” refers to the struggles and joys that artists born in and living around Vancouver face in response to the city’s changing landscapes. In order to compile this eclectic range of artists, the curators searched through dozens of artist-run spaces, local galleries, pop-ups and temporary exhibition venues, picking out those that represented the vibrancy of art in Vancouver and noting a shift away from the traditional ‘gallery’ exhibition. IN THE FALL OF 2016 MARTIN ROTH PUBLISHED A SELECTION OF HIS WORKS

Lush green grass springing through an ancient carpet in a ruined castle, bullfrogs croaking in a darkened gallery basement and ducklings nestled in an artist’s studio are some of the images presented in the first book-length survey of Martin Roth’s work. Roth is an Austrian artist living in New York. He is known for his subversive and referential work with animals and plants, his practice moving across painting, sculpture, installation, video and interventions. Exploring the boundaries between nature and art, Roth combines the two in a unique way, questioning the gap between humans and the natural world. In recent projects, he has created a soundscape for a bonsai tree using the amplified sounds of various animals, populated a gallery with parakeets and debris smuggled over the Syrian-Turkish border in a suitcase, and rescued laboratory mice in order to let them play Swan Lake via a running wheel. Taken as a whole, his work examines how the introduction of an organic element can redefine a surface, an object or its relation to the surrounding space. His work can be large scale and particular to a site, but the fact that it requires the nurture of living organisms makes it strangely intimate, inviting the viewer to directly engage with Roth’s work and consider their own relationship to it on a human scale.

Spielraum is a publication about Jasmina Cibic’s latest work, developed with the Ludwig Museum, Budapest; the International Centre of Graphic Arts, Ljubljana; and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Belgrade. Cibic is known for her investigation of how art and architecture are utilised as soft power strategies in the enterprise of nation building. Her works often gather and restage found materials that are in some way infused by the spectre of political ideology but that have, over time, changed in their performative function as enforcers of State identity. The title of the project is drawn from an essay by Karl Kraus, in which he vehemently opposes the use of decoration in both language and architecture. In this multidisciplinary work, Cibic takes Kraus’s concept of Spielraum as a lens through which to examine strategies of nation building via the use of linguistic and visual decoration by political figures and establishments, with particular focus on the first summit of the Non-Aligned Movement in Belgrade (1961). The Beaver Hall Group’s arrival on the Montreal scene in late May 1920 coincided with a pivotal moment in the history of Canadian art. In the wake of the war, a new generation of artists was looking for new modes of expression. Earlier in May, the founding of the Group of Seven was marked in Toronto by its first exhibition. The leaders of the Toronto group and the positive reviews that ensued bolstered those who had ideas on art differing from those held by the establishment. Simultaneously, the artists who banded together in Montreal shared the same desire to shed light on aesthetic options that would otherwise have gone unnoticed. At the first annual exhibition of the Beaver Hall Group, in January 1921, a critic declared that “the Montreal art scene has just been given a new boost.”1 Another reviewer was quick to identify a particular characteristic: “Individual expression… is the aim of this group.”2 The cohesive aesthetic and

When you set up the foundation of kiln to make glass, you first search in a favorable month for a propitious day, and only then you set up the foundation of the kiln. As soon as you have completely finished in the building of the kiln, and you go and place Kubu-images there, no outsider or stranger should enter the building thereafter; an unclean person must not even pass in front of the images. You regularly perform libation offerings before the Kubu-images. On the day when you plan to place the glass in the kiln, you make a sheep sacrifice before the Kubu-images, you place juniper incense on the censer, you pour out a libation of honey and liquid butter, and then only, you make a fire in the hearth of the kiln and place the glass in the kiln.... The wood that you burn in the hearth of the furnace should be thick, peeled poplar wood, which has no knots, bound together with leather straps, cut in the month of the Abu [July or August]. Only this wood should be in the hearth of the furnace. The persons whom you allow to come near the kiln have to be [ritually] clean and only then can you allow them to come down to the kiln. If you want to produce zagindurû-colored [greenish type of lapis lazuli] glass, you finely grind, separately, ten minas [about one pound] of immanakku-stone [sand], fifteen minas of naga-plant ashes, and 1–2/3 minas of “white plant”. You mix these together. You put them into a cold kiln which has four fire openings, and arrange the mixture between the four openings.... You keep a good and smokeless fire burning until the glass glows golden yellow. You pour it on a kiln-fired brick and this is called zukû-glass.11

Glass: Virtual, Real is a unique publication that explores the increasing use of glass in contemporary art as a relatively new artistic medium in the broader context of art history. Sculptor and educator Koen Vanderstukken investigates how postmodern art has brought glass to the forefront as a breakthrough art medium due to its intriguing qualities. Furthermore, the book draws clear parallels between our increasing familiarity with a virtual reality in today's digital era and an improved understanding of glass within an artistic context. The final, and largest, section of the book explores the impact of glass on the contemporary art scene, focusing on how artists are using the medium in exciting ways in their practices. Providing fascinating insight into the impact of glass as a medium on contemporary art, this book will appeal to historians, educators, students, artists and academics.

This recipe shows how empirical knowledge and magical superstition were intertwined. Another clay tablet (also in the British Museum), found at Tell Umar, near the Tigris River in Mesopotamia, gives recipes for “santu glass” and “Accadian santu glass”, this time with fewer magical rituals involved. According to RJ Forbes, however, the text does contain various cryptograms to keep the details of the recipe secret and to keep the competition guessing.12 This sort of superstition and secrecy was, of course, nothing new, and it would undoubtedly have been common practice in other crafts as well, but the complexity of glass production—and particularly the magical transformation from sand to glass and its perceived connection with natural minerals—meant that glass, more than most other mediums, was seen as unique and superior. This superiority is possibly best expressed in the headrests found among Tutankhamun’s treasure. Two wooden headrests were intended for Tutankhamun himself, but there are also two glass headrests. These are almost supernatural in quality, and technically unparalleled by any other glasswork from the same period. In all probability they were intended for the afterlife, as the perfect supports for the head of a divine being.13 Those who have seen the opaque turquoise and light-drenched cobalt blue headrests in person will have no difficulty understanding their link to the divine. Their location and the difference in function from the wooden headrests confirm the elite status of these glass objects. Around 1200 BCE many important centres disappeared, a result of war and famine. The resulting drop in the general cultural level meant a strong decline

Trinity Cube, 2015 Irradiated broken glass collected from inside the Fukushima Exclusion Zone forms the outer layer of this sculpture. The work’s inner core is made out of Trinitite, the mineral created on July 16, 1945 when the United States exploded the world’s first atomic bomb near Alamogordo, New Mexico, heating the desert’s surface to the point where it turned surface sand into a greenish glass. Trinity Cube was created by melting these two forms of glass together into a cube, then installing the cube back into the Fukushima Exclusion Zone as part of the Don’t Follow the Wind project. The artwork will be viewable by the public when the Exclusion Zone opens again, anytime between 3 and 30,000 years from the present.

Joy Garnett’s painting Poof (2) comes out of the artist’s career-long fascination with nuclear ordinance and explosive events that mark the Anthropocene. It is part of a series of paintings that reaches back to her research site and internet archive http://TheBombProject. org, which she founded in 2000. While on its surface, this series evokes painterly tropes and pop iconography, the explosive shapes in Garnett’s work mirror cultural and economic cycles of creation and destruction, seismic contraction and cosmic expansion.

Peter Voulkos: The Breakthrough Years is the first monograph in over 20 years on the ar tist Peter Voulkos. Covering the most prolific period of Voulkos’ career, from the early 1950s to the 1970s, the book includes both his well-known ceramic works and his largely overlooked paintings. The Breakthrough Years

By the end of 1948 the Communist run Maison de la Pensée Française in Paris hosted Picasso’s first ever exhibition in the medium of ceramics. The Communists welcomed Picasso’s work in pottery above all for its workman-like, popular, and folkloric aspects, and they imbued it with social, telluric and populist qualities. It allowed them to counter the adverse image of Picasso the millionaire, and it facilitated their efforts to present Picasso’s role in society, as a craftsman and worker, as a man of the people, working for the people. Moreover, and quite rightly, Picasso was hailed as the savior of the local industry, as his activity in the field and the exhibitions of his work drew new attention to the craft, and attracted young artists as well as tourists to the town.36 Moreover it allowed Picasso to work in a medium that could be sold at a cheaper price and was thus available to a wider audience. Similar preoccupations inspired Picasso’s work in lithography.37 Françoise recalls this period as one of the happiest and most harmonious times in her relationship with Picasso. In late summer 1948 she was pregnant again with Paloma, who was born in April 1949. Picasso chose the name, Spanish for dove, because she was born on the opening day of the first Congrès Mondial des Partisans de la Paix, April 10-13 in Paris, where Picasso’s famous dove, which would become a worldwide symbol of peace (pax sovietica), was first seen publicly.38 It may have been Picasso’s work with ceramics that reawakened in him his love of sculpture to which he devoted much of his time in the early 1950s.39 And much like in his ceramics, Picasso, who had been trained as a painter but never as a sculptor, enjoyed the freedom to work without the restriction of rules or the weight of tradition. This contributed to the playful spontaneity of much of his sculpture in which one is tempted to acknowledge the father inspired by the imagination of his children. He even refrained from casting the works in bronze at first, as bronze, according to him, gave the work a kind of museum like quality. In fact, the sculptures were very personal for him and he kept most of them for himself and his family.40 In need of space to store his ceramics and for separate sculpting and painting studios, Picasso bought le Fournas, a disaffected perfume factory in their neighborhood in Vallauris. Almost all of his sculptures of the time were assemblages of various objects. Calling himself “king of the rag pickers,” Picasso salvaged whatever appealed to him on frequent trips to the local garbage dump. This is where he most likely found the basket that forms the body of the Little Girl Jumping Rope, the old shoes on her feet and the chocolate box whose lid became her head. The sculpture, on which he worked in stages from 1950-1953, is astounding, as the little girl is literally suspended in the air, held there by the rope that touches the ground. The find of yet another basket helped Picasso in his desire to make a Shegoat (1950), using it for the belly of the animal. Its spine and forehead were made of a palm frond and her udders of two clay vessels.41 Picasso had a love of goats and he attached a life goat to his sculpture in the garden of his house. One of the first sculptures Picasso produced in the new space, Pregnant Woman of 1950, illustrated Picasso’s desire that Françoise should bare him a third child. Her refusal, feeling still too weak after the birth of Paloma, inspired Picasso to use three empty water jars for the figure’s breasts and belly.42 (ACB # 73043) With yet another one of his sculptures Picasso managed to upset his son by using two of Claude’s little toy cars to make the image of a baboon cradling its little child (1950-51). (Fig. 6) Even the fact that the image seems to portrait his father’s features did not console Claude over the loss of his toys. Lizzy Cowling, in her insightful essay in Picasso: The Mediterranean Years, 1945-1962, speaks of the metaphorical aspect of Picasso’s ceramics and sculptures, in which a ceramic vase becomes a woman, or a gas ring and a cake tin forms the basis of a baby’s head (Woman with a baby Carriage, 1950).43 Picasso himself had alluded to this when he said: “The material itself, the form and texture of those pieces often gives me the key to the whole sculpture… . I achieve reality through the use of metaphor. My sculptures are plastic metaphors. It’s the

This expressionist plate was wheel-thrown and then subjected to extensive manipulation and distortion. Its rim is torn away in some places and yanked out of symmetry in others. Cracks, breaks, and bubbles are visible on its surface; Voulkos first encouraged these incidents and then reacted to them, using epoxy glue and a contrasting clay, “repairing” its imperfections and heightening its overall look and texture. This could be considered a rough-and-ready variation on the Japanese custom of kintsuge, by which damage on precious ceramics is repaired with gold, simultaneously fixing and drawing attention to the wound. Cobalt slip was splashed down one of its sides, completing a masterful essay in improvisation. Plate was included in Abstract Expressionist Ceramics in 1966 at the University of California, Irvine, and was also shown in Peter Voulkos: A Retrospective: 1948–1978, 1978.
