RECOMMENDING LETTER SANUKI DAISUKE ARCHITECTS.

As a director of Sanuki Daisuke Architects, I had Mai as a long-term intern in my company. It makes me happy to recommend that she is one of the best interns I have ever seen. My company initiated several new projects during her working term and I have rarely been so impressed. Mai brings pleasure to anyone who works with her because her pleasant and positive attitude can make nearly any work seem fun and interesting. She treats every kind of work equally, which means, from the handmade task like making models to the technical task like drawing 2D and 3D file on a computer. She is diligent and smart when approaching a issue with great creation. Everytime she worked with handmade model she always learnt the database architecture of the project thoroughly so that she can create a model that express the idea and concept the best. Instead of making a model in her own ways, Mai always discuss with the project team to find out the best way to create a product that satisfied the idea. Her method helped she make dozens of concept models in a short time with highly aesthetics. This ability of her is highly appreciated in my company, where the model is one of the most important parts in design progress. Mai is not only inquisitive in reading new architecture information, but also happy to share her knowledge to everyone. She desire to learn from even small thing from other people, so everyone in the company confides in her while asking her for support, even when she does not have much experience in some tasks. Not only that, the way she thinks about architecture have some unique opinions so she usually has different viewpoints to a project. Other people in my company love to talk with her while they are finding idea because she can bring them a new inspiration. Despite trying to do best in her strong points, Mai is willing to improve the other skills that needed for working and she has worked hard for her target. Obviously, she does not have enough knowledge for working like a staff from the beginning, but after a long working term I have seen her rapid improvement. The way she communicates with other members in the company also make her become an important factor. In our work, attitude is almost as important as ability. With Mai you get the best of both things. I would have no reservation recommending Mai and hope we can have a chance to work together in the future. Should you have any questions feel free to contact me. Sincerely, September 30, 2019

JOU RN EY OF STONES HUNG KING TEMPLE

Located in th center of Tao Dan park, district 1, Hung-King temple here at first, is the smaller verson of Hung-King Temple in Phu Tho. However, the question is, what exactly is the temple? Is there neccesary to build a temple with a form merely duplicated from the original verson? In my opinions, the most important factor while people step in a temple is the feeling that place gives

them.

Respectation,

reveerness,

honor...

those feelings can be experienced in not only the traditional architecture, but also a modern form. Ho Chi Minh city is a young and energetic city, therefore, a temple with a modern form can easier actract people, whom almost lost interesting in visiting temple while they live in a busy city.

Page | 10

Portfolio - Mai Đặng Personal projects

The project uses big-size stones to arrange and build the space obey the basic form: rectangular. This form allow us to make a modern space but still keep graveness for the temple. By using stones arranged disjointedly, light can be used as a emphasized tool, with is unlackable in traditional temple.

BOXES IN AND OUT RESIDENTIAL COMPLEX Beyond the old rules and impresstions about typical residental complex, BOXES IN AND OUT is a new definition which combines the basic rules of social housing and the youthful creation. The overall idea responds to both two criterions: ensuring the basic conveniences for each apartment in private space, using the mediate space, public space to transfer them into diferrent wolrd in order to create the most jointful feeling in views.

Pho Dong Village map

Page | 17

Portfolio - Mai Đặng Personal projects The idea of site plan is using the geometric form to define overall areas: private area and public area. The creation in dividing spaces is rotating those “geometric-form area” to ensure passive architecture for each apartment. Spaces between those area will become potential bases for landscape, traffic lines, and also youthful space for enjoying and relaxing. Further more, changing number of floors randomly and adding overhead-walking bridge is two important factors that create many different public places that have impressive position. People live in BOXES IN AND OUT will have motivation to go outside and communicate with neighbors regularly, thanks to these beautiful public places.

URBAN ROOF PERFORMING ARTS CENTER The design located on a site surrounded by high density of urban buildings - center of district 3, HCMC. A performing arts center at this position is like a treasure in a valley, which attracts all the attention of people around. With a background of square-shaped buildings, the design chose the contrast method to form the center, in order to seperate the building’s architecture from context, and above all, this center has to become an local architectural icon.

Page | 24

Portfolio - Mai Đặng Personal projects

The design is considered based on two important target: •

The communication between the building and outside.

The combination between traditional and contemporary factors.

The final design a combination between straight-shaped building and curving landscape. Additionally, large open spaces allow the center to connect with surroundings by activities, as well as to become a linking spot for unconnected architecture around.

TERRACE HIGH-RISE HOTEL The site located on a new urban area that has a target of “Eco-city”. From this point of view, the building has to consider about a form that not only be iconic, but also has a “green breath” on the appearance. The hotel at this position will focus on visitor staying, event organizing, commercial activities... Therefore, forming a design with high quality of visual appropriateness and traffic approaching is one of the most crucial criterias..

Brand name is one of the most important factor in designing hotel. An hotel brand affects significantly the exterior and interior detail of the building. Having the brand “Novotel”, the design focuses on the equivalent ratio between concrete and glasses in the exterior and the conbination between local traditional factors and modernist details in the interior.

MEMORIAL STORYTELLER SAIGON - HO CHI MINH CITY EXHIBITION AND CULTURAL CENTER Ho Chi Minh city plays role as a “capital” of culture and economy of Vietnam. The land has taken form for thousands years, with the developing process connects closely to rivers and canals system in the South of country. With a large scale of diversed culture developing from the reputation of “Pearl of the Extreme Orient” since French Colonial Era, there are oppotunities and threats for the city to publicize its treasures to people, especially visitors. The design focuses on ways to solve parcially this state based on a condition of heritage preservation.

THERE IS A WHOLE WORLD IN THE BOXES INNOVATIVE SCHOOL The question for this project is: “What is the space for a new education?” So what is a new education? In Vietnam nowaday, traditional education methods are dividing students into different levels, different groups, using many similar classrooms for teaching. Therefore, these methods formed a typical school with rows of classrooms. All activities of students are put in these closed spaces. There is no, or few connection between students from different class, between students and outdoor life.

Page | 56

Portfolio - Mai Đặng Teamwork projects

The first target of an idea is to change the traditional classroom module into a new thing that more energetic. Different activities should have different spaces to occur, also should be enjoyed by all students at the same time.

While the activities have been pulled outside, they, by themselves, automatically create “zones”. Different activities make different “zones”. Factors are gathered enough, then the mission of the team is to arrange and build these factors become an authentic architecture. The “zones” are one of the most significant element in this project.

Page | 57

Portfolio - Mai Đặng Teamwork projects The original school the team chose to process a project has two buildings seperated by a church. This unique case is based on the history of the church, while the school had been belonged to the church. Because of this seperation, students in two buildings rarely have chances to communicate. Students need teacher help them pass the church’s front yard to get in another building. This rule make students lost their activeness to go between two buildings.

There are so many ideas for the target “connect two buildings”. The idea has to be creative in architecture form, but also ensure the safety for students and the formalness of the church. The ‘zones’ will be used as a main factor in the design, but the question is: what is the exact form? An organic form to express nature or a form that merely make students feel interested and exited?

Page | 58

Portfolio - Mai Đặng Teamwork projects

The last design that the team agreed is using module of rectangular box connected by stairs and ramps. This module give students proper spaces to enjoy there activities. Spaces can also transfer from inside to outside, by adding or de-adding faces of the box. Further more, these group of modules easely express a big-scale form that give the feeling “two buildings want to approach each other”

PREI NOKOR 4.0 SAIGON RIVERSIDE RENOVATION Prei Nokor: /definition/ The first name of Saigon, which means “city in the jungle”. Saigon - Ho Chi Minh city was borned as a thinly populated riverside swamp, then the value of Saigon river was exploited and this land gradually developed. The name “A pearl of the Extreme Orient” has attached to Saigon river and the riverbank for hundreds years. In anytime, preserving and developing Sai Gon riverbank and surroundings landscape is a economic and cultural concern of all the city.

1.3.5 FIELD HOSPITAL DESIGN COMPETITION A terrible epidemic in recent year had reminded human that they should have prepared for any bad situation happening suddenly. At the outbreak of disease, lack of medical supplies and rooms can become a fatal weakpoint. Inspired from the news of many travelling ships were refused to land because of a lage number of affected people on them, the design consider using a large sea area of Vietnam for building a floating field hospital to treat for patients on the ships without them landing.

The story begins...

Select several suitable positions on Vietnam sea region to gather big affected ships. Then, construct a FLOATING FIELD HOSPITAL in place to treat for patients on the ships.

CIRCUIT PRE - TRADITIONAL FESTIVAL PAVILLION The topic of Pre-Traditional Festival’s Competition 2017 in UAH is “An exhibition space” with dimensions 3x3x2.5m. Beyond the typical imagination about a space full of photos, the team started the idea with “multi”. A place that has multiple ways to approach, multiple ways to travel inside, will give people whom visit it has different experiences. Using a rectangular frames, combining with pieces of semi-translucent fabric, TRANSFORMING is a space that once people step into it, they will have many different sight of view about the space of this university. The scenes never change, but the way each one see it is unique, because different people have different routes in CIRCUIT.
