An Album of Fake Postage Stamps made by Mail Artists for the Shopping Trolley Gallery
As part of my involvement with Mail Art I have created and sent, also collected, fake postage stamps made by artists and therefore called
I have
shown them as small art exhibitions on the Shopping Trolley Gallery and other places from time to time
was shown during a Field Study meeting. The stamps were hanging from balloons initially hidden inside the STG and then released from the Millennium Bridge in front to the Tate modern, in London. Unfortunately it was raining and they didn’t fly for long, the balloons being dragged down by the weight of the soaking stamps.
In July 2010 the Beckenham Sorting Office hosted to which 53 artists from 18 countries contributed. I organized this show in recognition of the postal services to Mail Art, an art movement that started in the 1960’s, consisting in the postal exchange of artwork among artists.

It is not known how many of us are involved in this very democratic art movement where no work is ever rejected and nothing is ever sold. We do strange things, we are quite irreverent and we mount shows in unusual places; I have used my shopping trolley as my personal art gallery and also I have mounted Mail Art shows at a local cafe, schools and libraries. My own exhibitions are documented in several eBooks published in Issuu. In the Mail Art universe there are virtual countries and even virtual planets. Most artists have a nickname, or two, and it is all about friendship and fun but opinions are expressed on serious issues as well. With many Mail Artists now using the Internet for their art exchanges, some of us are fighting to keep alive our dear ‘Snail Mail Art, as artwork sent by post is affectionately called. My own contribution to the show is the stamp on this subject seen on the cover. This book shows only part of my collection of artistamps, sent to me over the years by many of my artist friends to whom I am most grateful .
