2011 general catalogue 2007 “For the painter, no longer existing are colored objects but outcomes of compositions of pastes. What for you is a delightful flower (as notion or a part of sentiment) for me is a chord based on pink lake, pale blue on white and sallow yellow slightly cooled by emerald. Yet not ceasing to remain a flower. Gianni Maimeri, Treatise on Painting, 1933
We thank all of our employees who, with their professionalism, commitment and dedication, have contributed to the excellent reputation that Maimeri products have worldwide. in cover, Gianni Maimeri, Self-portrait (detail), 1916, oil on canvas, cm 50x41 Fabio Pietrantonio, Guerriero di pace (detail), mixed technique on canvas
“Keep everything that is not necessary out of the painting, everything that is not felt” Gianni Maimeri, The diary October 31 1905
Superior Oil Colours Oil and pure pigment, nothing else. The product of a dream and of outstanding technical achievement, Maimeri Puro superior oil colours are the most advanced and yet the most traditional of oil colours. Restoring the outstanding simplicity and quality of original oil colours to paint formulas: that was the dream of painter and paint manufacturer Gianni Maimeri, though his dream which did not take
Maimeri Puro on concrete form as paste in a tube until three generations down the line. Striving for simplicity and purity, putting years of technical experience to work, Maimeri’s company came up with the formulas for the 80 colours in this range one by one. Using the best quality safflowerpoppy seed oils that will not yellow and stable pigments which require no additives to produce a perfect impasto, Puro offers top quality, the perfect manufacturing process and the correct balance between binder and pigment. Squeeze a tube of Maimeri Puro, and you’re squeezing the very idea of oil colours.

“Keep everything that is not necessary out of the painting, everything that is not felt
Oil Colours This line of oil colours offers the tonalities of the master artists of the Italian Renaissance: in paint composition, in grinding pigments and in the use of rare semi-drying oils, non-yellowing and crystal clear. Many pigments in this range correspond to the ancient originals; others replace,
Gianni Maimeri, The diary October 31 1905
in calibrated and perfect imitation, compounds of heavy metals that, being toxic, harmful
Rinascimento or polluting, should no longer be used. This also provides for safe mixtures of colours, eliminating any risk of alteration. Research into ancient pigments made it possible to select the finest and most stable colours, eliminating problems with incompatible substances once hard to mix.

“ There’s a strong link between technique and subject” Gianni Maimeri, The diary December 29 1905
Extrafine oil colours Tradition and innovation. The qualities of the components and workmanship that go into Artisti oils combine harmoniously to yield a product that represents the best of both tradition and innovation. The impastos offer the average drying rate typical of oil painting to permit optimum use of blending and allow the artist to take up the paints again and continue work. The line offers a vast palette of 106 colours, including a number of authentic historical
Artisti pigments such as Flake White and Zinc White, Aureolin and true Sienna Earth, Prussian Blue, Manganese Violet, and Bitumen. Maimeri’s decision to continue producing valuable classic pigments which are all but impossible to find these days means that the artist must comply with the ancient basic rules of mixing. The less lightfast pigments, and especially those which are hazardous to the health, have recently been replaced with synthetic pigments guaranteeing comparable colour purity with improved stability and safety. The few colours still considered to some degree damaging to the health, obviously to be used with due precautions, are always marked with the “harmful” symbol.

“ The painter must do as the poet or the musician does: speak; the word that calls up a world” Gianni Maimeri, The diary December 29 1905
fine oil colours The Artist’s daily bread and butter. Anyone professional or amateur – who picks up a tube of Classico oil paints will find in it just what they need. Classico fine oil colours are versatile, offering an unsurpassed price to quality ratio. These colours are produced by strict principles that yield a top quality product. They revolutionise the criteria by which a economical (rated “fine”) range is judged. They contain no waxes or thickeners, (no manufacturing
Classico shortcuts). The colour palette includes the best original natural earths and true cadmium pigments. Average pigment concentration is very high. Formulas are perfected to balance the drying times of all colours. Bright, lively colours with overall harmony in the palette, Classico colours are made with modern non-toxic, non-polluting pigments that improve lightfastness. All colours may be intermixed together in any ratio or proportion, without limits. All this thanks to Maimeri’s vast experience, summed up in an oil line that has proven to be so successful it has become the daily workhorse of a whole generation of artists.

Coarsely Ground Oil Colours The chromatic assortment of Coarsely ground Mediterranean. Colours is basic, because only a few essential tones are needed to render the magic of a harmonic motion. Pure and, one may say, fundamental, the colours of this light are in any case calibrated to capture every nuance and modulation needed for sunny,

luminous and natural painting. The grain size of these colours is larger than for other
Mediterraneo oil paints and paste density is thicker, with brushstrokes accentuated. The colour dried on the canvas damps the ray of light and softens tones, giving the surface a rugged feel. Mixable with other oil colours.

Oil Colours The Italian Natural Earth colours are created with pigments of antique origin that have always been used to make the colours that until a few years ago characterized the regional schools of painting throughout Italy. The colours of Roman houses, of Venetian palaces, of the Umbrian or Tuscan hill-towns.
Gianni Maimeri, The diary October 31 1905
The grain size of the dispersed pigment is larger than for traditional oil paints.
Terre grezze d’Italia The paste is denser, the appearance more opaque due to a different refraction of the light, the tone is more natural and the coat is thicker and more material. Italian Natural Earth colours can be mixed with other oil paints. Slight discontinuities in tone are a guarantee of the authenticity and naturalness of the product, which contains no additional colorants of organic synthesis.

high quality at a convenient price safety and respect
In Maimeri Olio has been perfected all the expertise gained in many years of work, free from binding precedents, aiming towards an element that changes one’s view of oil colours, completing an assortment of the existent with what had been lacking. 38 essential colours well balanced and with new pigments. for the environment. All toxic or harmful substances have been excluded from
Maimeri Olio the formulation, modern, efficient, useful . Composed of layers of plastic material coupled with an impenetrable and impermeable barrier, the tube is therefore exceptionally practical and manageable and, above all, extremely resistant. Average drying time for the range is less than for other oil colours, decreasing work time, freeing time spans, providing some savings and allowing for the use of painting techniques and utensils more in tune with acrylic colours while enjoying the brilliance of oil paints. The range includes 4 oil painting mediumsof new formulationn in the same 200-ml tube.

Thinner suitable for all oil colours, mixable with water, non-hazardous for human health nor for the environment. Liquid like water, colourless, with a barely perceptible odour, the Oil Medium can be used indoors without causing disturbances. For very sensitive users the workplace should be ventilated during or after use. Oil Medium is the ideal alternative to traditional solvents (turpentine, white spirit, odourless thinner), it reduces the density of oil colours, softening the paste and making the application easier and smoother. It can also be applied with a dropper to avoid waste or the product can be added to the colour in controlled quantity. Excessive use may cause dull or dry areas on the painted surface and therefore it is advisable not to exceed 30% of Oil medium with respect to the colour. It evaporates more slowly than traditional solvents, however we recommend closing the container well after use in order to avoid unnecessary dispersion. If clean, the remnants of Oil Medium can be returned to the original bottle after use and reused countless times. The product does not slow down the oxidation of oil colours and can be disposed of in household drains. Keep out of the range of children.

Ammonia-free cleanser mixable and dilutable with water. Non-hazardous for human health nor for the environment. It thoroughly cleans all painting tools, such as brushes, painting knives, palettes and mixing bowls. Suitable for cleaning the insides of plastic tubes allowing a perfect recycling of the tubes. Slightly straw yellow, it is odourless and has excellent dispersion power, removing all traces of oil and pigment. Slightly foamy. For cleaning plastic tubes cut the end of the tube just below the weld. Pour the detergent into the tube either pure or slightly diluted with water. In order to obtain maximum cleaning power shake well or use a bottlebrush to clean the low end of the tube. For cleaning painting tools use the detergent slightly diluted with water or if necessary for a stronger action directly on the support with a soft sponge in a way not to damage the painting instruments. For cleaning the painting supports follow the instructions for cleaning the tools. We recommend taking action immediately to avoid permanent stains on easels, tables or other supports caused by the drying of oil colours.
“ The aesthetic emotion is always an act of synthesis, perhaps an act of love” Gianni Maimeri, The diary Spring 1907.

“Refinement in art is often a sign of weakness and superficiality Gianni Maimeri, The diary May 17 1908.
fine acrylic colours The greatest versatility in acrylic colours. The Polycolor line is intended to make the most of the enormous versatility of a painting technique which has revolutionised the way the world is painting in the past fifty years. Polycolor contains a special ultra fine acrylic emulsion binder, a high tech product which dries to produce an extremely strong, resistant, supple, opaque film which performs very well even out of doors, exposed to natural elements.
Polycolor All pigments are highly concentrated to offer excellent coverage and colour impact (100 ml of paint will cover about 3 square metres). All colours are lightfast and may be intermixed freely. The range includes seven indelible metallic colours intended for a wide range of uses in billboards and decorating. Polycolor colours are ideal for covering large surfaces, for beautiful stage sets, for interior decorating and indoor and outdoor murals.

“Keep everything that is not necessary out of the painting, everything that is not felt
fluid acrylic colours Resistant, fluid and glossy, extremely easy to apply. Perfect adherence on every type of material, canvas, paper, plastics, textile, wood, metal, resin. Pleasant to use, the colours have the ideal viscosity for being used pure or mixed with each other. The brush spreads the colour softly and without difficulty, it is smooth and pliable.
Gianni Maimeri, The diary October 31 1905
The brushstroke is uniform and homogenous; traces are avoided.
Polyfluid Versatile and precise, the colours can be combined with the polycolor range in order to enhance and define details, particular elements are highlighted by the impressive contrast between the mat finish of Polycolor and the gloss of Polyfluid. Excellent results are also obtained when Polyfluid is used with acrylic pastes and Polycolor Gesso.

“Drawing is an invention of the spirit, a way of fixing thought Gianni Maimeri, The diary Maimeri, May 28 1908
superior watercolours MaimeriBlu pans are still made by hand. In order to ensure that the product is not adulterated with additives or artificial processes which would alter its genuine quality, Maimeri still performs a number of stages in preparation of individual pans by traditional manual methods. Thus the purity of formula and composition that is the true quality of these watercolours is preserved. In designing the palette of 72 colours, preference
MaimeriBlu was given to the pigments offering the greatest transparency, without prejudice, attempting to achieve top colour quality and lightfastness in the simplest possible way. 52 colours are pure, consisting of a single pigment bound with authentic top quality gum-arabic from Sudan and distilled water. The clear, fresh tone of watercolour painting is the result of the exceptional clarity of the colours. Pure. Simple. Extraordinarily transparent. Like all MaimeriBlu colours.

“The aim of art is knowledge: but art, in order to be art, must be done Gianni Maimeri, The diary Maimeri, December 3 1908
extrafine watercolours The initiate’s portal to watercolour painting. When we renewed our Maimeri watercolours, we decided to maintain one line offering the best quality to price ratio in a range of colours all offered at one single price. The result is Venezia: a range of 36 colours which are all maximum lightfast and can all be intermixed together. In coming up with the new palette and choosing pigments, Maimeri removed all cadmium and cobalt based colours and reduced
Venezia chrome content to a minimum in order to eliminate toxins and heavy metals, offering a final answer to the problem of environmental impact, both in the usage and in the production of this product. Research continues all over the world, and the relationship between paint and the environment continues to improve, on the basis of a new awareness that Maimeri has made more than a goal, but an ongoing commitment. In Venezia watercolours pigment concentrations are determined in each individual colour in order to obtain a highly harmonious palette of soft shades reminiscent of the colours of the city they are named after.

“There are no great and minor artists: there are artists, and non-artists Gianni Maimeri, The diary 27 febbraio 1909.
extrafine gouache colours Smooth, mat and opaque painting. A new range of extrafine gouache colours makes the most of the potential of gouaches to preserve the original properties and qualities of this ancient method of applying colour. Completely water-soluble pastes now offer total coverage in combination with brilliance in all shades. Gouache colours are perfect for use on all bases: prepared cardboard and canvases, porous surfaces and paper. Their top quality binder and high pigment concentration make
Maimeri Gouache these paints perfect for air-brushing and for all types of graphics work, after appropriate dilution. The colours in the palette have been chosen with a new use in painting in mind: a complete set of bright, lively colours permitting even the most demanding painters to obtain all the shades they require. Two whites and two blacks, ten reds, eight blues, nine greens and four metallic colours: a glance at the colour chart will give you an idea of the thought that went into selection of the colour palette. All this to maintain the prestige and quality of a unique product. Not watercolours, not acrylic colours: those who paint with Maimeri gouache colours are well acquainted with the spirit of gouache painting.

Metallic powder colours A discrete, toned-down glimmer of gold is often what gives an ornament its secret fascination. Watersoluble metallic powder colours, used individually or mixed with gouaches or watercolours to obtain an infinite variety of hues, are also recommended for small-scale restoration work and for touching up frames and gilding. Metallic powder is kept dry and diluted only at the time of use to prevent oxidation and preserve its full brightness and splendour.
Gold Powder Simply dip a damp brush into the powder jar to obtain a colour which is easily applied to the surface to produce a perfectly smooth, covering coat.

“ When you draw houses, remember that people live in them” Gianni Maimeri, The diary January 21 1912.
fine gouache colours Very few people know how much Maimeri owes students the world over. Comparing notes with the young, with people who are just learning about art, is a demanding and difficult task, but the payback in terms of imagination and innovation has well exceeded our expectations. A range of gouache colours dedicated to them must meet a number of basic requirements. Tempera fine gouache colours are just the thing: simple,
Tempera Fine convenient, versatile; not too many colours, but well positioned over the colour spectrum to permit easy creation of all combinations. The paints can be diluted to any degree, used pure or thinned like watercolours. They are fully compatible and can be freely intermixed with one another and with other waterbased colours. They are sold in small packages with an excellent price to quality ratio, without any misleading manufacturer claims of “hype”. Very few people know how happy we are at Maimeri to see our colours in the hands of children and students.

“Drawing is the product of thought, of poetry, of the spirit Gianni Maimeri, The diary December 16 1912
varnish colours Pure, authentic, lightfast pigments mixed with mastic resin and refined hydrocarbon solvents are the ingredients that go into this line of colours that has proven popular with restoration and conservation workers the world over. Restoration is a severe test, pitting half a century of Maimeri quality against the great masterworks of western art. This line makes use of a number of earths, which Maimeri still obtains from the best sources: authentic Sienna Earth,
Restauro often replaced by imitations using artificial oxides in today’s colours, various shades of Green Earths, authentic Umber Earths and Cassel Earths. Ocres, natural iron oxides, are still obtained by grinding the mineral; Maimeri does not use artificial precipitates prepared by industrial processes. Only the Lakes have been replaced by new products of organic synthesis, which maintain the same tone as the traditional pigment but with better lightfastness. Naples Yellow is lead antimoniate, as required by medieval recipes, and of course the mastic resin used is from the Island of Chios, whose name has always been linked with the best-known varnish resin.

“ Colour is matter, sense, reality Gianni Maimeri, The diary December 16 1912.
ketonic resin colours Ketonic resin colours for restoration are the outcome of a study intended to complete the range of colours for retouching which Maimeri offers for conservation and restoration work of all kinds the world over. The new range of colours, produced by binding lightfast tested pigments with ketonic resin and selected hydrocarbon solvents only, now offers the greatest reversibility and resistance to yellowing. Ketonic resin colours are offered alongside the
Restauro traditional line of mastic resin based colours for restoration in response to the most recent demands of scientific research into the conservation of works of art. While the proven line of mastic resin colours is ideal for touching up works which have been varnished or finished with traditional natural resins, this new line is better suited for use with modern synthetic varnishes, now used in restoration and conservation even of older paintings, adding the value of unbeatable lightfastness in the binder. The two lines may be mixed together and thinned using the same thinners.

“ The great question in painting is how to combine drawing with colour” Gianni Maimeri, The diary December 16 1912
pure artists’ pigments When we demand something more, something different from a painting technique, we have to go back to the pigments. As always, pure finely-ground pigment is the starting point for every special paste, for every new undertaking and for every new colour, in art, decoration and restoration. For artists wishing to work with such rare ancient techniques as fresco, egg tempera or encaustic painting, or give free rein to the wildest experiments, a genuine, dependable
Pigments pigment provides a dependable point of departure. This is why Maimeri offers not only ready-made colours but pure pigments packaged and sold in powder form, quality tested and guaranteed with the Maimeri name, in recognition of the fact that painting is a never-ending work in progress. This range of pigments is designed to meet all artists’ needs: from the ancient harmonious palette to the most vivacious tones of contemporary art. All colours are sold in precious glass jars like those once used in apothecaries or in the paint workshops where powders like these used to be kept.

“ Painting must taint the painter’s entire life. Gianni Maimeri, The diary January 23 1917.
charcoals and gum eraser Charcoals, the ideal instrument for tracing compact, smooth black lines, are now produced from particular kinds of wood burned in a vacuum to ensure that they are completely charred. Traditionally charcoals were manufactured exclusively from the wood of the spindle-tree, but now willow wood is preferred, as it offers the same quality and is more widely available. Lines drawn with charcoal are strong and full of
Charcoals character, and enclose the full content of many works. Gianni Maimeri himself demonstrated the power and emotional content of the line obtainable with the product in his collection I Musicisti. (The Musicians)

Tixotropic Acrylic resin (15%). White spirit Thickeners
This is a semi-shiny amber-colored medium that improves fluidity and transparency and softens brushstrokes. It is easy to mix, using brush or palette-knife and can be used instead of oil. When coating or overlapping colors nothing else is needed to increase the flexibility of subsequent layers: just increase the amount of Oilyn, gradually adding it as work proceeds.

= 16 = 26 = 34 = 40
White spirit Linseed oil
Medium to reduce the oil colours consistency, without loosing their richness, as solvents do. It tends to yellow.
