Editor’s Letter
I’ll start this year off by telling you a secret — remember, we listen and we don’t judge — I usually dread putting together the news briefs, press releases, and community tidbits that inspire the Seen & Heard section. I always save that section for last in order to include the most up-to-date information, so the pressure of deadline combined with the fatigue of finishing an issue tends to make those few pages a much larger chore than they really are.
But — you knew it was coming, didn’t you? — this issue, Seen & Heard was a pleasure to complete. There were so many new business openings and exciting community announcements that it turned into our largest Seen & Heard section since the magazine debuted. It’s a joy to witness the area’s growth and be a part of sharing those announcements. Please continue to send us your business and community news and story ideas by emailing editor@mainandbroadmag.com.
If you are a longtime reader and paying very close attention, you may notice that we’ve adjusted our publication calendar slightly. Main & Broad comes out every two months, but we’ve changed how those months are grouped to align better with our family of brands (which includes Cary Magazine and Wake Living) and to make more sense seasonally. Welcome to our premiere January/February issue. Next up will be March/April where we’ll announce the 2025 Maggy Award winners. Happy new year to all; and thanks for reading.

“We want to serve natural products,” says SupaBowlz Café owner Troy Lehrer. “We use quality ingredients with high nutritional value.”
Lehrer’s goal is for his smoothies to taste great and overflow with healthful foods that will give customers sustained energy and nutrition.
Take the UnBEETable smoothie, a straightforward recipe of bananas, pineapple, protein powder, and peanut butter — and then you get to the star ingredient: beets.
“Beets are one of the foods with the most incredible nutritional value,” says Lehrer. “In the smoothie, you can’t even taste them.”
No time for a sit-down breakfast? Lehrer took all the components of a cozy bowl of oatmeal — steel-cut oats, bananas, blueberries, peanut butter, protein powder, and cold brew — and turned them into a filling smoothie called Breakfast of Champions.
“It’s everything I like, thrown together and tweaked until it’s just right,” says Lehrer.
Other fresh and wholesome offerings at the Holly Springs and Fuquay-Varina café locations include acai and poke bowls, salads, and wraps. supabowlzcafe.com

Crimson Orchard Fizz
From Colletta
Colletta strives to offer zero-proof cocktails that incorporate seasonal ingredients. Spiced apple shrub — a combination of apples, sugar, spices, and vinegar — provides cool-season flavors, while the hibiscus tea gives a nod to warmer weather.
RECIPE
¾ ounce spiced apple shrub
2 ounces hibiscus tea
½ ounce lemon juice
Fever Tree ginger beer
Combine the first three ingredients in a shaker. Shake and strain into a tall glass with ice. Top it off with ginger beer. Garnish with mint and a dehydrated orange slice.
Colletta, which means “collection” in Italian, is just that: a compilation of lively dining experiences, top-notch service, and quality Italian cuisine that sets the stage for genuine connection over a great meal.

Laura Nickels
Founder, Nickels Coaching; Notes from Your Coach author and podcast host; WCPSS counselor
Laura Nickels considers herself the Queen of the Pivot — having navigated family moves, career changes, divorce, and a period of intense career burnout. Through Nickels Coaching, she uses personal experience and professional skills to steer others through life’s twists and turns.
ON COACHING: It is based on a lot of counseling skills, like reflection and deep listening, but is also very action oriented. You want to get from A to B; it’s my job to use my skills to help you get there. Even to this day, 2.5 years in, I’m surprised by how effective it is.
WHEN DOES IT WORK? The thing I love about coaching is that it is beneficial for anything, for people of all ages. Whether it’s something that takes three months, something that’s going to take a whole year, or something that we could unwrap in one session.
I’ve had clients come to me to sort through big changes: retirement, crosscountry moves, switching careers. I have had people who are stuck, tired of spinning their wheels with nutrition and fitness. I’ve had clients trying to figure out the next thing; they know that something needs to change, but they’re not quite sure what it is.
ON PIVOTS: I am so passionate about talking about pivots because life is full of them. We all need the ability to be flexible and move with life as you go. But also, recognizing that pivots can be overwhelming because they are like shifting sand. Sometimes you don’t know what direction you’re going to end up going. There’s a lot of new emotions coming in. Sometimes pivots bring happiness and sadness at the same time. Sometimes you’re navigating grief while you’re also navigating joy.
There are major
pivots and small pivots that happen every day. The more we are able to move with them on a daily basis, the easier it gets to manage the bigger ones, too. I try to help my clients realize that everyone is equipped with the skills to navigate these things, but sometimes we just need more tools in the toolbox to use.
GAME CHANGER: When I wake up in the morning, if I somehow make sure that I do something for my mind, my body, and my spirit first thing, my day is completely different. For my mind, a basic gratitude practice shows my brain to look at the world (differently). Then I’m more apt to have gratitude for everything else as I walk through my day.
And then for my body, it can be stretching or going for a walk — it doesn’t have to be a whole lot. And for my spirit, I love meditation. I think meditation practice or mindfulness is so important because it allows you to learn to observe yourself in a nonjudgmental way.
“ I am constantly working on myself, and I think that’s really important in somebody you look to as a helper. I don’t want anyone to think that I have everything figured out. ”
— Laura Nickels MB
CLIENT ZERO: I try to be super vulnerable and open about the fact that I’m client zero. I am constantly working on myself, and I think that’s really important in somebody you look to as a helper. I don’t want anyone to think that I have everything figured out. We are all on this journey, figuring out how to be human and what we want our lives to look like. If I can help somebody else also navigate this with compassion and love, that’s my goal. nickelscoaching.com
Fuquay-Varina Maps Out Future with Vibrant Downtown Generational Plan
This fall, the Fuquay-Varina Town Board adopted its first Downtown Generational Plan, a long-term vision for revitalizing a downtown center, focusing on making downtown vibrant, sustainable, and inclusive for all generations through thoughtful land use, economic development, and infrastructure improvements.
“Essentially, the Fuquay-Varina Downtown Generational Plan is a roadmap for creating a thriving downtown that meets the evolving needs of its diverse residents, businesses, and visitors for decades to come,” says Mayor Blake Massengill.
Built on extensive public engagement, the plan envisions a downtown that celebrates the town’s culture, welcomes diverse residents, and extends beyond Main Street to encompass vibrant green spaces, accessible transportation, and opportunities for economic growth.
Places for people to gather and create unique experiences are key for a successful downtown, so three transformative projects are proposed in the plan:
• Piney Woods Park – an iconic civic space in the heart of Downtown to meet the needs of generations to come. Programming ideas encompass a town square, playground, market area, and a plaza.
• Junction Mixed-Use District – a district to foster a vibrant “live-work-play” environment through infill development,
bridging Downtown Fuquay and Downtown Varina with a new physical connection.
• Mineral Springs District – a district to honor the town’s heritage through a focus on arts, health, and wellness, building on the success of the Arts Center and amplifying its impact across Downtown.
Another exciting recommendation considers the creation of a Rail Trail, converting existing rail lines into vibrant pedestrian paths, which requires further feasibility studies to determine its viability.
Recently approved by the Town Board is an ambitious transformational mixed-use project aligned with the Downtown Generational Master Plan. This initiative expands downtown living and commercial options through a development agreement with Raleigh’s HMP Holdings, LLC. The new vertical complex will feature 20,000 square feet of retail/restaurant space, 244 apartments, and a 420-space parking deck.
The 90+ action items in the Fuquay-Varina Downtown Master Plan aim to strike a balance between new development, redevelopment, and infill projects. Assistant Town Manager Jim Seymour emphasizes, “This plan serves as a roadmap for our vision,” acknowledging it will take years to implement. “The Generation Plan will guide responsible development, ensuring a unique, vibrant downtown that attracts businesses, visitors, and residents alike.”
HONOR THE FARMING LEGACY
Evidence of Southern Wake’s agricultural tradition lingers all over town. Put a bit of distance between yourself and the bustling local downtowns, and you’ll quickly find a small tobacco field or horses grazing in pastures. Keep that rich history from disappearing by supporting the remaining local farms and farmers.
Shop the produce and seasonal markets at Holland Farms or Needmore Farms. Enjoy the Barnyard indoor play area and ice cream shop at Willow Oak Farms Naylor Family Farm offers year-round agritourism activities, including an Easter Egg Hunt, autumn Corn Maze, and Christmas on the Farm event. Pick your own strawberries at Porter Farms & Nursery. Visit the Holly Springs Farmers Market, Fuquay-Varina Growers Market, and the State Farmers Market to support local growers and producers weekly.
BECOME A REGULAR
Nothing quite says hometown like a bartender pouring a pint and ordering up your “usual” before you even sit down. Southern Wake has many-a bar, tavern, or taproom to welcome you like family. Consider The Corner Biergarten’s Thirsty Thursday specials or Saturday night trivia, a round of pool at the Cleveland Draft House, or regular live music nights at Aviator TapHouse or Local Time Brewing
Prefer dining specials? Wednesday steak and potato night at Nightingale Rooftop begs for repeat visitors.
Mamma Mia Italian Bistro’s Thursday Date Night Dinner for Two makes regular date nights a cinch.

GET OFF THE BEATEN PATH
Ditch the traffic for winding rural roads, peaceful paddling, and rustic hikes. Raven Rock State Park and Harris Lake State Park offer hiking, biking, and outdoor recreation (bass fishing, anyone?). Or pack the family for a waterfront camping adventure at Jordan Lake.
A new park, Beech Bluff County Park, will open in between Fuquay-Varina and Garner on Highway 42 this year with community and demonstration garden plots, playground facilities, and green space.
For those willing to drive farther afield, Robertson Millpond Preserve in Wendell offers a paddling trail through a unique blackwater habitat surrounded by a dense canopy of bald cypress trees.
WHAT A CATCH!
If it’s fishing you’re looking for, Bass Lake in Holly Springs is stocked with catfish and participates in a Tackle Loaner Program through the NC Wildlife Resources Commission.
MEET YOUR NEIGHBORS
The South is lauded for its friendly people ... time to get to know them. Gorgeous neighborhoods, town-wide recreation and social events, and area networking groups foster opportunities to mix and mingle. The Holly Springs Small Business Network meets twice a month to build relationships and spark creativity among business owners. Local chambers of commerce host ribbon cuttings, breakfast meetings, and after-hours socials nearly every week. The faith-centric Restored for Moms community offers a coworking club and speaker-led coffee chats.
Or try painting workshops led by local artist Heather Eck frequently at Bombshell Beer Company — a perfect opportunity to sip and visit with new friends. Active civic clubs like the Holly Springs Rotary Club or the Fuquay-Varina Woman’s Club encourage community service and personal relationships. The Fuquay-Varina Jeep Club, aka Duck Duck Jeep, pools a shared love of Jeeps to raise money for community causes.
SERVE YOUR COMMUNITY
Make a big impact on your small town by giving back through nonprofits or advocacy groups. Many area charity organizations have founders who reside in Southern Wake County and work to ensure that help is given directly to the local community.
Volunteer (or shop) at Guardian Angel Thrift stores, assist on construction projects with Military Missions in Action, tend the garden at the Holly Springs Food Cupboard, or build bunk beds for Sleep in Heavenly Peace Many nonprofit organizations receive generous donations during the holiday season, when giving is high, but need additional support in supplies, financial donations, and service hours during the first quarter of the year.
Advocacy organizations like school parent–teacher associations and town advisory committees offer outlets for impacting the community as well. For example, Oakview Elementary School’s PTA recently unveiled a new outdoor learning environment for students — a collaborative project several years in the making.

Hot Yoga
Prana Yoga Holly Springs I TRIED IT
Written by Emily Uhland | Photographed by Jonathan Fredin
Polina Fayet admits that opening a downtown yoga studio during covid was a risky endeavor. But realizing her dream, nine years in the making, just couldn’t wait any longer.
“
Many people are surprised to hear that movement or postures are only one aspect of the yoga practice. I was attracted to the blend of movement, breath, awareness, and introspection.
Prana Yoga, located on the ground floor of The Block on Main, opened in 2021 with clean and inviting facilities and “a natural energy about it,” says Fayet. “Prana means ‘life force’ in Sanskrit, the language of yoga.”
“Our studio offers a variety of styles, including hot yoga, power flow, aerial yoga, yin, gentle, restorative, and more,” she says.
Fayet came to yoga as a new mom, struggling — like many new parents — with her identity and new body.
“Yoga allowed me to reconnect with myself, and for the first time in a long time, I felt amazing.”
– Polina Fayet
“Many people are surprised to hear that movement or postures are only one aspect of the yoga practice. I was attracted to the blend of movement, breath, awareness, and introspection,” she says. “Physically, yoga improves flexibility, strength, and posture
while enhancing balance, coordination, and energy levels. Mentally, yoga helps reduce stress and anxiety, enhances focus and emotional regulation, improves sleep quality, and fosters a sense of inner peace.”
Instructor Madison Whitley followed a similar path to discover a love of yoga.
“Movement has always been a part of my life, but I really got into yoga when I was pregnant,” Whitley says. “The movement made me feel good instead of sore and achy. I felt empowered.”
Whitley especially enjoys hot yoga, a class she teaches frequently at Prana.
“The heat relaxes the muscles and allows me to move deeper into poses and postures that I couldn’t do in a 70-degree room,” Whitley says. “Hot yoga warms me up and fuels me — it ignites that fire.”
During hot yoga sessions, Prana’s studio is heated between 100 and 105 degrees.
“The heat enhances flexibility, promotes sweating for a detoxifying feel, and increases cardiovascular activity, making it both a workout and a yoga session,” says Fayet. “It also challenges mental focus and resilience. We find that the shared experience of enduring the heat also fosters a sense of camaraderie and accomplishment among our students. There’s really nothing quite like it.”
If you’re thinking that sounds challenging, you’re right, but there are options for every experience and intensity level.
“Gentle yoga classes are ideal for beginners
because they provide a more accessible yoga experience. These classes focus on slowerpaced movements and foundational poses, allowing beginners to build confidence and develop body awareness without feeling overwhelmed,” says Fayet.
Whitely adds, “As an instructor, I give you the opportunities for movement, but you have to honor where you are.”
“For those not quite ready for (100-degree) intensity, but who want to experiment with the heat, we also offer heated yoga

classes at 80 to 90 degrees,” says Fayet. Talented instructors and thoughtful details help the studio feel like a home away from home, Fayet says.
“Small touches — like cold, wet towels after a hot yoga class and free wellness shots following our sunrise classes — make our students feel like we care about every aspect of their experience.”
I visited Prana Yoga on a chilly day in December to try a hot yoga class — my first ever. Here’s how it went:
GETTING PREPARED
When I first heard about hot yoga, maybe a decade ago, I thought it sounded miserable. So naturally, of our team members, I was the one to try the class. As I’ve gotten older (and more stiff and achy), the idea of heated practice has become more appealing, so I was excited for the challenge. Prana has a great blog post about preparing for your first class, and friends warned me to bring towels and water, which helped alleviate some nerves going in.
THE HEAT IS ON
Entering the studio, the heat hits you instantly — I was very glad for the towels I brought along. The instructor that day was Madison Whitley. She was so friendly and encouraging and made me feel welcome.

Local haunts such as Fainting Goat Brewing Company in Fuquay-Varina and Niche Wine Lounge in Holly Springs provide a platform to develop live performing skills.
NC’s 96-mile section of the Appalachian Trail includes the Kuwohi summit, 6,643 feet above sea level, and drops into the steep walls of the Nantahala River Gorge, offering a variety of challenging landscapes to explore. With the damage left by Hurricane Helene, the trail is in an ongoing state of recovery. Be sure to verify trail status and accessibility prior to departure.

I staked out a spot in the back of the studio, and we were off!
I really liked how the elevated room temperature warmed my body up fast, so I felt ready to get moving right away. Madison talked us through every posture and flow and kept the class progressing quickly. You could tell she was having fun, which made the whole experience fun. I never felt like I had to have perfect form or was doing it “wrong.” I tried my best and just kept going.
I definitely agree with Polina’s statement that hot yoga is a workout and a yoga session (see sweaty selfie below)!
POST-CLASS REFLECTIONS
I was proud of myself for making it through, and I was soaked with sweat! Hot yoga was an amazing workout. I loved that it got my heart rate up. The cool towels at the end of class felt like heaven. I never thought I would want to go back, but I absolutely do.
Also, I expected to be sore the following day, since I don’t practice yoga often. I’m happy to say that I wasn’t. I think the heated room really contributed to that. Thank you, Prana Yoga, for such a fun experience!

A FOCUS ON FINISHING TOUCHES
At Bovenizer and Baker Orthodontics, pushing the envelope of excellence is one of our core values. Straight teeth alone present good alignment and function. However, in a lot of cases, they do not present the best aesthetics. Drs. Bovenizer, Baker, and Kenning go above and beyond in every case, to create a pleasing and aesthetic finish. At Bovenizer and Baker Orthodontics, we utilize several procedures to make our finishes stand out.
Tooth Shaping: After taking braces off, treatment is completed with polishing and gum contouring. Polishing consists of altering the tooth shape to appear more natural and in line with the smile arc. The doctors focus on being both smile architects and artists, through shaping the teeth edges to make them as ideal and aligned as possible.
Gum Contouring: A laser gingivectomy is an orthodontic procedure used to remove or
recontour gum tissue. In the case of a patient with a gummy smile, Drs. Bovenizer, Baker, and Kenning use a dental laser to eliminate extra gum tissue and expose more of the teeth. Lasering allows them to reduce gummy smiles, even out gum heights, and give the appearance of larger teeth for a more desirable smile.
Dental professionals sometimes get locked into straightening teeth and fixing the bite, often forgetting about the aesthetic details. The doctors and staff at Bovenizer and Baker Orthodontics believe that orthodontics is more than just straight teeth, and that contouring and lasering add the finishing touches to create beautiful smiles.
The practice offers free new-patient consultations that include an X-ray, photos of your teeth, an exam with Dr. Bo, Dr. Baker, or Dr. Kenning, a treatment plan, and a financial quote.
BEAUTY AND CONFIDENCE RESTORED TO YOUR SMILE
Cary Prosthodontics is proud to be an innovated leader in the replacement of missing and broken down teeth in Cary and nationwide.
Both Dr. Brandon Kofford and Dr. Kevin Lim have been involved in developing and educating other providers about a patent-pending process that has transformed the patient experience for the “Teeth-ina-DayTM” treatment concept. The process yields a better esthetic outcome, while reducing the postsurgical discomfort — without compromising the integrity of the temporary fixed bridge during the healing period. Most patients can have their teeth removed, implants placed, and an interim prosthesis attached to the implants in the same appointment.
Cary Prosthodontics keeps patient experience and satisfaction at the forefront of every procedure, customizing your smile to make sure your teeth not only look and feel great, but also function well.
Dr. Lim and Dr. Kofford received their master’s degrees in Prosthodontics, specializing in the most complex dental problems.Their advanced training includes full-mouth rehabilitation, dental implants, dentures, cosmetic dentistry, jaw joint issues, bridges, crowns, and veneers.
In addition, Dr. Renata Camino is the newest member of the Cary Prosthodontics team. Dr. Camino served as an assistant professor in the Department of Prosthodontics in the Division of Comprehensive Oral Health at The University of North Carolina - Adams School of Dentistry from 2019-2022. Her duties involved teaching didactic and clinical courses at the predoctoral level and graduate level, including patient care. Her interest lies in continuing to implement innovative workflows that simplify treatment, to enhance provider communication skills and facilitate interdisciplinary care. Dr. Camino is accepting new patients at Cary Prosthodontics and looks forward to serving our community.

FIND YOUR SMILE® AT STANLEY DENTISTRY
There is never a dull moment for local family dentists Drs. Robert and Bobbi Stanley. The Cary-based practice owners are parents of four and proud partners of Stanley Dentistry, a comprehensive practice near Preston. They are founders and lead instructors at Stanley Institute for Comprehensive Dentistry, a dental continuing education organization, and have been providing world-class dental care in central Cary since 1995.
Initially, Dr. Robert Stanley was a partner in business, and Dr. Bobbi was the only dentist. However, after receiving his PhD as an engineer and working in the industry for many years, Dr. Rob made a major change and decided to join the clinical side of the practice full time as a dentist. “It just made sense for Rob to join me in practicing dentistry,” said Dr. Bobbi. “It is rare to go back to school for an entirely new career when you’re already a successful engineer. But he saw how much I truly enjoyed my work, and he had been interested in dentistry since
spending time in his grandfather’s Chicago dental practice as a child.”
In the practice, Dr. Rob enjoys procedures like dental implants, oral surgery, and sedation dentistry, while Dr. Bobbi focuses on cosmetics and Invisalign. Dr. David Baranowski joined the practice to focus on general, restorative, and pediatric dentistry. The result is a practice that serves the dental needs of the entire family under one roof.
Today, three generations of Stanleys work together to provide ethical and exceptional dental care to patients from all over the Triangle. Dr. Rob’s father, Robert Sr., leverages decades of business experience to lead operations at the practice, and Drs. Stanleys' daughter Megan and son Shane are an an integral part of the operations team. Together, the team at Stanley Dentistry strives to not only provide exceptional care, but to help patients find their smiles. If you’re looking for a family owned and operated dental practice in Cary, look no further than Stanley Dentistry.

FRATELLI’s DELICATESSEN
Written by David McCreary | Photographed by Jonathan Fredin
At long last, Apex has a bona fide family-owned deli. Let’s just say it’s worth visiting early and often.
Located at the new Sweetwater Town Center off Highway 64 in Apex, Fratelli’s Delicatessen features New York- and Chicago-style breakfast items, sandwiches, salads, desserts, and more. The counter-service eatery opened in September 2024.
Owners Dave and Shannon Thomas hail from the Windy City and the Empire State, respectively.
“I’m from Long Island, but we met in Chicago, and we were both accustomed to having delis on every corner,” says Shannon. “When we moved down here, there were days when we would say, ‘I want a bacon, egg and cheese’ or, ‘I could go for an Italian beef.’ We
couldn’t find those around here, so that’s when we decided to open our own place.”
Inspired by family matriarch and Shannon’s late grandmother Margaret Saudo, affectionally known as Nan, Dave and Shannon wanted to capture the spirit of togetherness for which Nan was known. The couple teamed up with several other family members in the new venture, including Nan’s great-grandsons RJ and Tyler Cancel, who are siblings (“fratelli” means “brothers” in Italian).
“Nan lived to be 99, and she was the cornerstone of the family,” Shannon explains, pointing to her grandmother’s cherished lasagna pan displayed near the deli’s entrance. “Sundays were always the
big day for gathering at her house for food and family time.”
Speaking of food, popular hot sandwiches at Fratelli’s include a meatball parm crowned with melted provolone and mozzarella and a signature marinara; piled-high pastrami on rye with spicy brown mustard; and a Reuben with house-braised corned beef, melted Swiss cheese, sauerkraut, and Thousand Island dressing. Don’t ignore the Little Italy panini encompassing a crispy chicken cutlet, fresh mozzarella, prosciutto, roasted tomato, and balsamic aioli served on ciabatta bread.
“
When we moved down here, there were days when we would say, ‘I want a bacon, egg and cheese’ or, ‘I could go for an Italian beef.’
We couldn’t find those around here, so that’s when we decided to open our own place.
When it comes to cold selections, we highly recommend the Berserker, pictured opposite, which involves rare roast beef, cheddar, arugula, roasted tomato, red onion, and horseradish sauce on a kaiser roll. Another surefire winner is the Italian loaded with Genoa salami, pepperoni, capicola, tavern ham, provolone, red onion, and herbed aioli, plus olive oil and red wine vinegar for good measure.
”
– Shannon Thomas
If you prefer a smaller or more budget-friendly portion, more than 20 sandwiches are available in two sizes.
“We source our bread from La Farm and Neomonde, and we’ve partnered with New York Bagel & Deli in Cary for bagels,” Dave says.
Want a New York or Chicago hot dog? Fratelli’s offers both types loaded with all the requisite toppings.
Much of the menu has gluten-free options.
“I can’t eat gluten, so I know how important it is to have safe choices,” Shannon reveals.
“Other members of our family also have dietary restrictions,” Dave adds. “We have a dedicated station to prepare the gluten-free items, so we take it very seriously.”
The restaurant also serves an extensive selection of breakfast sandwiches, burritos, and bowls — all day, every day.
“Since many of our items are made to order, there’s no reason we shouldn’t offer breakfast anytime,” says Shannon.
For a spot-on New York–style experience, order a classic BECSPK sandwich, which melds bacon, egg, cheese, salt, pepper, and ketchup on a kaiser roll. Trust us: It’s fire.
“The Hungry Man is the best breakfast sandwich I’ve ever eaten,” declares Frank, a native New Yorker and regular Fratelli’s customer. The Hungry Man stacks three eggs, three slices of
American cheese, applewood smoked bacon, sausage, and ham on a kaiser roll.
The hearty Fratelli’s Trio, available as a bowl or burrito, brims with scrambled eggs, ham, applewood smoked bacon, pork sausage, sauteed onions and peppers, cheddar jack cheese, and breakfast potatoes.
Salads also get plenty of love here, with choices including antipasto, Caesar, Cobb, and Greek. There’s also a pick-your-own salad station that includes toppings like black olives, hard-boiled eggs, and pepperoncini.
“We have all kinds of salads: egg salad, chicken salad, tuna salad, pasta salad, macaroni salad, and more,” lists Dave. “Our Long Island potato salad is dynamite and takes two days to make. The potatoes are brined and sliced thin, and there’s a lot of love that goes into the recipe.”
Front-and-center display cases showcase tempting desserts like tiramisu, cheesecake, and Italian cookies, plus Boar’s Head cold cuts and cheeses to take home and enjoy later.
An easily accessible grab-and-go section provides fresh and frozen delicacies like baked ziti and lasagna. Curated jars of gourmet provisions such as lemon-basil pesto,
serrano ham–stuffed olives, and black garlic hot sauce also are available.
“We’re trying to make things as convenient and family friendly as possible,” says Dave.
As for beverages, locally sourced java comes from nearby small-batch roaster Peak City Coffee. Beer, wine, and mixed drinks are available, including Bloody Marys, mimosas, and champagne.
“We have eight rotating local beers on draft, including Southern Peak Brewery, Wicked Weed, and Burial,” Dave adds. “Vicious Fishes is doing an exclusive collaboration with us called Inferno, which is an Italian pilsner.”
If you plan to eat in, go early, as seating in the dining room is limited. An outdoor patio offers room for about 50 guests. fratellisdeli.com @FratellisDeliApex

Holly Springs musician revives Golden Oldies hits for fun and fellowship
Written by Emily Uhland
Photographed by Jonathan Fredin
Matt Silverstein has a soft spot for music from the 1950s and ’60s.
He loves The Drifters, Sam Cooke, and Roy Orbison; The Beatles and The Beach Boys, of course. The list goes on.
“Growing up, that was the kind of music I listened to a lot. My mom especially used to love to play all the oldies,” says Silverstein, a Holly Springs resident.
“As I became a musician and I learned more about arranging, composition, harmony, and music theory, I came to realize that this era of music is really rich. There are a lot of complex harmonies and orchestral arrangements, symphonic arrangements, things that you don’t really hear so much in modern music.
“The songs are so pure — pure love songs. Music now is very snarky and cynical. There’s just something really warm and cozy about that era.”
A professional musician, Silverstein performs locally under the stage name Matt from Boston. You can find him on nights and weekends playing gigs at local bars, breweries, and restaurants, along with the occasional wedding.
“I’ve had to learn a huge volume of songs to keep my playlist rotating and fresh. I’ve got songs from basically every decade — and lots of them.”
Ultimately, Silverstein turned his love for oldies into an entirely new type of booking.
“I came up with the live music bingo idea. If you go to music bingo anywhere else, they’re playing songs off an iPad or a DJ turntable and a laptop,” he says. “But I’m performing the songs myself with an acoustic guitar, sort of a unique twist that allows me to find more performing opportunities.”
“I wound up making some playlists with just ’50s and ’60s hits and then reaching out to some assisted and senior living facilities to see if they’d be interested in having me to perform for their residents.”
“ The songs are reflections of the years we grew up. It brings back a lot of memories.
”
– Carolyn Nutt
The idea was an instant hit. Silverstein currently works with more than a dozen locations in Wake County offering live music bingo to groups as large as 75.
“There hasn’t been a location that I’ve performed at that hasn’t asked me back again on a semi regular or regular basis.”
The Aspens Holly Springs, a 55+ apartment community off South Main Street, hosts Silverstein weekly to perform live music bingo for a growing enthusiastic audience.
“When I play the games, (the residents at The Aspens) are really playing along; they’re competitive. They get up and dance sometimes and sing along sometimes. It’s a lot of fun,” Silverstein says.
“Matt is the bomb,” says The Aspens resident Carolyn Nutt, a regular bingo attendee. “I’ve been to see him at Niche Wine Lounge, too. The songs are reflections of the years we grew up. It brings back a lot of memories.”
“Matt plays some great music,” says Steve Anderson, another resident. “I come to all of the events. It’s a wonderful way to meet people.”
Each location attracts a different crowd, Silverstein says, but there is always a feeling of joy in the room.
“I do one location where it’s a memory unit for people with advanced dementia and Alzheimer’s. The music brings them back a little; they can remember and enjoy, even if they can’t really play the game well or need more assistance. The attendees are still very much present for it and listening,” says Silverstein.
“At each location they are so appreciative of me being there. Live performers don’t play these songs very often. Sometimes participants will cry. I’ve had women come up to me, totally in tears, and say, ‘This song you played was my song with my partner that I had for 40 years. They may have passed, but this brings back memories.’”
“It really is a joy for me, as a musician, to be able to offer that to people.” mattfromboston.com MB

FVM’s Winter Survival Kit
The dark days of winter are upon us, and it’s time to kickstart your new year’s resolutions get depressed. Yes, you’ve gained weight over the Chrismahanakwanzika, and no, the dryer is not to blame. You’re about to be on your 500th bowl of chili since chili season began, and you’ve tried every cookie recipe on Pinterest. The doctor suggested a “Mediterranean diet” to lower your cholesterol, but Mediterranean meals aren’t cooked in crockpots, so it’s only a matter of time (rest in peace).
Many of us are fine to welcome the open arms of Prozac until spring comes to crack open our frozen souls. For those who are looking to not become the worst version of yourself while trapped inside a Canadian cooler, listen up.
The winter survival kit is here, and it may or may not help you. Either way, it’ll probably make you laugh.
INDUSTRIAL STRENGTH LIP BALM
If you fear that your lips look like a piece of dried-out ham found in the depths of your
post-holiday fridge, they probably do. No amount of lip oil is going to save you, and the EOS lip balm ball that’s been rolling around in the bottom of your purse for the past nine months isn’t, either. You need to go hard with this — if it’s not the size of a glue stick, it’s not doing its job. We’re talking about a tube so big it doubles as a doorstop. Make it happen, for everyone’s sake.
MOON BOOTS
Forget regular boots. We’re talking about moon boots with anti-slip technology, inbuilt foot warmers, and a retractable snow shovel. Will it snow? Probably not, but if it does, you’re ready for Snowmageddon. Yes, you’ll look like Napoleon Dynamite, but you’ll be the one laughing when everyone else is slipping on ice and busting their cankles on the pavement.
HOT TODDIES
You know what time it is. Yes, you could just have hot chocolate or herbal tea, but
Look, winter is rough enough without people getting all mad about me calling them bigbacked and sad.
Sometimes the only way to get through these months is by laughing at yourself.
where’s the fun in that? Whether you’re setting the mood for some wintimacy or trying to avoid it, the hot toddy is the perfect way to dip out and drink without anyone knowing you’re drinking. Wrap your little mug up in a sweater and make it cute. No one has to know you’re getting drunk at 3 p.m.
HEATED BLANKETS
It can’t be just any heated blanket, though — this thing has to be so big it can double as a tent or a car cover. The goal is to look like a human burrito. You want to be so warm that your butt crack starts sweating and you have to turn off the fire in the living room. Goals.
LAYERS OF COTTON
This is the South, y’all. It’s not wintertime unless we’re layering 15 levels of cotton to play in a quarter-inch of icy snow before walking back into the house, dripping wet. No, it’s not economical or even logical, but layering season and seasonal beards are the only things that keep us from looking like the post-holiday hosses that we actually are.
SNACKS & SUN LAMPS
Stock up on marshmallows, cookies, and anything you can hide in your 60foot heated blanket (don’t worry about calories; that’s what layers are for). My friend, who is sitting directly across from me as I write this banger of an article, suggests investing in a sun lamp. If you don’t know what that is, it’s for sad people.
A SENSE OF HUMOR
Look, winter is rough enough without people getting all mad about me calling them big-backed and sad. Sometimes the only way to get through these months is by laughing at yourself, with your mismatched socks and sky-high heating bill. If it’s sleeting, park yourself next to the front window and watch your neighbor wipe out on the sidewalk. Listen to a funny podcast on your way to work as you peer through that one clear hole on your icy windshield while trying to figure out how defrost works. Spring will be here before you know it — it’s the South, after all. MB
