Fiction 5

“Monhegan Island is a kind of force—of nature, yes, but also of beauty.… The island is remote and rugged and forever, and its appeal to painters stretches back nearly two centuries.… Kevin Beers discovered the island in the late 1970s.… Monhegan became his artistic talisman, his north star, an unceasing source of inspiration—and joy.… His island canvases reflect his passion for place.… It’s fortunate for us that Beers gave up advertising for the painter’s life. He took the leap, and now, nearly 25 years later, every year we await a new crop: sunrise on Manana, house portraits, a dory pulled up on Fish Beach.…”

Soren, a city park pigeon, is befriended by two kind girls. Bullies, two boys, who attack pigeons as bad and dirty, strike down Soren’s wise friend Bright Wings, making enemies of the girls. Soren tells how the four children, in a country meetinghouse, struggle to face each other and experience the peaceable kingdom (dove/pigeon) values: forgiveness, love, fairness, and peace.
