COVER ARTIST: ROCKWELL KENT

Sun, Manana, Monhegan, 1907, oil on canvas, Museum Purchase with Funds Donated Anonymously. Bowdoin College Museum of Art 1971.73

Rockwell Kent painted the sunset over the island village of Monhegan and the cliffs of Manana with an unblinking eye, capturing the crystalline quality of radiant light. The twenty-three-year-old artist traveled to Monhegan for the first time in 1905 at the urging of Robert Henri, his teacher at the New York School of Art. The young painter found a subject matter that resonated with him. He wrote after he left with his family in 1910, Truly I loved that little world, Monhegan, small, sea-girt island that it was, a seeming oating speck in the infinitude of sea and sky.”

Everett Collection Historical / Alamy Stock Photo

Among the many paintings of the Maine landscape in the collection of the Bowdoin College Museum of Art, this jewel-like work is a perennial favorite. The painting makes palpable the feeling of regaining an inner balance and a connection to nature. At Bowdoin, it is part of a sizable group of paintings, drawings, watercolors, and prints by Kent.

isitors to the Museum’s galleries this summer will find it and other works by Kent on view that exemplify the artist’s lifelong admiration for remote communities and appreciation of grandiose nature. Kent’s love for Monhegan gave birth to an artistic career that was characterized by travel to the wilds of distant lands. 24

Welcome With great pleasure, we present the Maine Gallery + Studio Guide 2019 Maine Tour of Art. The following pages show the art of a very talented community of Maine artists and the galleries that represent them. The State of Maine is a State of Art, brimming with a variety of art districts, galleries, studios and museums. This guide is your road map to a self-tour of discovery of the best that Maine art has to offer. The summer season in Maine is short and very sweet. Attending evening opening receptions, indoors and out, is a lovely way to spend some time sociali ing, meeting artists and locals, and seeing the work of emerging and established Maine artists. Use this guide to find out what is happening in your locale. I took a lot of pictures this past year. I hope they serve to introduce you personally to many of the people behind the art and will help start a conversation, and perhaps a new relationship. Becoming a collector can start with a single canvas. Historically, women artists have been overshadowed. In this edition we dedicate space throughout to the sayings of prominent women painters who were the forerunners of their time. Stay in touch with the Maine art scene automatically when you visit our website and sign up for Cafe des Artistes, our roundup of Maine art news, openings and shows. Our website is your link to all the art in this guide and more. Su anne and I would like to extend our warmest wishes for your tour of Maine. There are special moments, sights, smells and experiences just ahead. We hope you enjoy them all.

With the new Alfond-Lunder Family Pavilion, expanded collection, and a vibrant exhibition program, the Colby Museum is a destination to experience great art. Here is a scene taken from the 2018 Colby Museum Fall Open House, courtesy of Gabe Souza. Downtown Waterville is also home to The Framemakers Gallery, which shows the work of local artists on Main Street. George Pearlman has shown his work internationally and has been the recipient of numerous grants, residencies, and teaching positions throughout the United States. Pearlman’s pottery is showcased at George Pearlman Pottery, a working studio and gallery on River Road in St. George. The studio and contemporary ceramics gallery are open May through October. A. Acclaimed Camden artist Jessica Lee Ives is seen here at her first one-woman show at Gleason Fine Art last September in Boothbay Harbor. At left is the ever-joyful Ives; alongside her is her husband Jonathan Ives, Gleason Gallery Manager Andrew Gleason, and enthusiastic Camden collectors. Gleason Fine Art celebrates its 34th year in 2019 with shows featuring gallery favorites Kevin Beers and Henry Isaacs, as well as newcomers Roger Dale Brown, Timothy Horn, and Boothbay Harbor’s own Nate Campbell.

Harbor Square Gallery in Rockland, now in their 39th year, welcomes the public to their unique 108-year-old building, itself a work of art and most certainly a place of beauty. Thomas O’Donovan, owner, founder, goldsmith and artistic director of the gallery, designs and crafts his unique signature pieces in collaboration with master carver and goldsmith Glade Sarbach Davis. Gallery visitors can view four floors of fine art and explore the rooftop Muir Garden, an oasis of trees and sculpture, a floating park, a place apart. 55

On August 29, 1912, a young Edna St. Vincent Millay was attending a party and recited her celebrated poem “Renascence” to an enraptured audience of guests and staff at Whitehall Inn. The poem was written atop Mt. Battie in Camden. One of the hotel’s guests was so taken with the talented young “Vincent” (as Millay was known to call herself), she sponsored Millay’s college education at Vassar. Millay went on to become one of America’s favorite poets. This plaque sits atop Mt. Battie, where you can see “three islands in a bay.” A. Anderson photo

David Estey is an improvisational abstract painter in Belfast. In July, he will have a solo exhibit of recent paintings at Studio 53 Fine Art Gallery in Boothbay Harbor. He is also represented by Littlefield Gallery in Winter Harbor and Carver Hill Gallery in Camden.

Belfast artist Susan Tobey White is best known for her colorful, energetic paintings of dancers in crowded dance halls who practically dance right off the canvas. From professional dancers to “dancers at heart,” White’s work is continually praised for the feelings of wellbeing it evokes. White’s latest works focus on women who work the waterfront, in a series that is being exhibited at the Penobscot Marine Museum in Searsport. A. Anderson photo

Belfast artist Jerri Finch has lived in Belfast for the past 35 years, making a living as an artist painting the land and seascapes, villages and domestic scenes of Maine. She offers her original paintings, prints and cards at her small, cozy gallery, the Finch Gallery, located in a little refurbished wooden building at 16 Main Street in downtown Belfast. Finch’s work was selected to be part of the Thos. Moser Winter-Spring Show, “Maine’s Four Seasons for Art” at Thos. Moser Cabinetmakers in Freeport.

New to the Midcoast Maine art community, Local Color Gallery opened last year at 135 High Street in the historic Masonic Building in beautiful downtown Belfast. The gallery features 15 local artists working in a wide variety of mediums: oil, acrylic, watercolor, and encaustic painting; printmaking and etching; fiber, wood, and found object sculptures and assemblages. The gallery participates in the Belfast Fourth Friday ArtWalks.

Lucerne-in-Maine is a lake community between Bangor and Ellsworth on the Bar Harbor Road. It has the sobriquet of being “the prettiest place in Maine,” and is also the home of Maine Gallery + Studio Guide, Yikes! Studio, and Grind Studio. While the shoreline is Lucernein-Maine, the actual lake is Phillips Lake, a deep, clear freshwater lake of 840 acres with many beautiful protected islands. A. Anderson, photo

The Adam Gallery shows the oil paintings of Susan Parish Adam and Joshua Adam on Battle Avenue in the heart of Castine Village. The airy rebuilt 1900s barn shows painted local scenes on land and sea, each in their own style. Susan and Joshua met at Colorado College where they found themselves painting in adjoining studios. After graduating side by side with a B.A. in Fine Arts, they began to paint professionally and haven’t stopped since. Open from Memorial Day weekend through Columbus Day, the Adam Gallery is yet another reason to visit unique and historic Castine. A. Anderson photo

Carolyn Walton Gallery is on North Deer Isle Road in Deer Isle. In her artist statement, Walton says, “I learned to love nature and rural landscapes at an early age, and it is my passion. I want to capture those brilliant moments that inspire me… hay bales in the sun, a rocky coast in fog, and of course clouds and more clouds!” Her work is represented by several select galleries and resides in hundreds of corporate and private collections worldwide. Jill Hoy is an artist who likes working on location. Her use of vivid color results in surfaces that are richly and intensely painted with images that seem to vibrate. “The light in Maine is crystal clear, with a sharp-edged clarity and a gem-like quality. I often work in the morning or late afternoon when these qualities are especially strong,” says Hoy. She’s been a regular resident of the Deer Isle area since 1965, and her colorful work can be seen at Jill Hoy Studio in Stonington. A. Anderson photo

Eastport is a charming and historic artists’ colony surrounded by the most beautiful ocean scenery anywhere. It is home to many small galleries, studios and the Tides Institute & Museum of Art which offers many programs, including the StudioWorks artist in residence program. New on Water Street this year is Full Fathom Five Gallery, representing Maine photographers who know the secrets to capturing the unique beauty and spirit of this Downeast archipelago. An example is Greg Gordon, Full Fathom Five Gallery owner and photographer of this scene. Like the quiet side? A visit to Eastport is always worth the drive and is a major destination of the Downeast Passage.

Schooner Gallery in the town of Milbridge opens the season with the annual “44º North” Downeast Open Art Show through June, with over 50 works on display. This exciting and inspiring annual event features Maine artists who live within 44 nautical miles of Milbridge. Schooner Gallery has a gift shop with select Maine-made products as well as visitor information about local businesses and attractions. Here Dugald Kell, owner and director of Schooner Gallery, hangs art for a new show. A. Anderson photo
