COVER ARTIST FREDERICK JUDD WAUGH Frederick Judd Waugh

(1861 -1940) was born into an artist’s family. His first

teachers were his father, Samuel B. Waugh, a respected

Philadelphia portrait painter, and his mother, Mary Eliza Young Waugh, a miniaturist. With

encouragement from his parents, he attended the Pennsylvania

Academy of the Fine Arts, where he studied with Thomas Eakins

and Thomas Anshutz. After three years, he left for Paris, where he

entered the Académie Julian and studied under Adolphe William Bougereau and Tony Robert-

Fleury. In 1883, while he was still

a student, his work was accepted for the Paris Salon.

His first one-man show, an exhibition of paintings inspired by the summers he

spent at Bailey Island, Maine, in 1908 and 1909, was held at the Macbeth Gallery

in 1910. In 1914, he was a judge of the art exhibit on Monhegan Island, during the 1914 Ter-Centenary celebration of the Voyage of Captain John Smith.

Although Waugh was very versatile and accomplished in depicting a variety of

subjects, it was his marine paintings that brought him critical attention. Waugh was known to have painted up to ten canvases a month to keep up with the demand for his work.

Paintings by Frederick Judd Waugh are represented by McCarty Gallery, Philadelphia, PA, and Clark Point Gallery, Southwest Harbor, ME.

When the State of Maine was closed to visitors for the first part of the 2020 summer for Covid 19, our art community was forced to react quickly. There were winners and losers. Art galleries with years of client relationships and up-to-date email lists did more than survive, with many having a banner year by season’s end. Maine studio artists fared less well, and we are very sorry that so many of them were not able to participate in this 2021 guide.

Original 1901 Maine flag

This past year has awakened us to a new future. Showing and buying art online and digitally is now here to stay. Our new enhanced website features beautiful Maine art on your phone, new digital publications and Lookbooks, art shows and events, directions and what’s happening nearby. We hope you can meet them personally, form friendships, and return home with wonderful memories and wonderful new art for your home. Roselind Fedeli has a unique ability to combine fragile and unorthodox materials in startling combinations of sophisticated collage and assemblage. Roselind’s work, painstakingly crafted of wood, metal, feather and fabricated objects, is on view at her studio/gallery, River Current Studio in York.

Marguerite Lawler’s subjects are the wooded and watery environments of Maine; her focus is the effect of light on the landscape. Marguerite shows her work at the Monhegan House, The Hole in the Wall Studio Works and Moss Galleries. Here she is painting at Thompson Point.

25

SOUTH COAST + PORTLAND

Marcia Crumley, shown painting in her home studio in Cape Elizabeth, creates expressive landscapes, designed to make our home happy. Her home studio is open by appointment only. Contact her by email to arrange a visit.

ACADIA/DOWNEAST J. McVeigh Jewelry was founded in 2017 by John McVeigh, a jewelry artist and professional opera singer. Situated on the waterfront of picturesque Stonington, the gallery showcases 30 of today’s leading jewelry and metals artists from around the world. Each season J. McVeigh Jewelry curates new collections from returning artists, while introducing the work of a limited number of new artists to the gallery.

Kirsten Rickert and Cynthia Winings created a “Love Portal,” a collaborative form for the 2021 Valentine’s show opening at Cynthia Winings Gallery in Blue Hill.

92

ACADIA/DOWNEAST

Well-known Castine painters Joshua and Susan Adam have joined with Julia Parish Jewelry to open a sunny new gallery in downtown Castine that shows their collective work.

The Deer Isle Artists Association has 100 artist members and is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting the visual arts through exhibitions and education, with a gallery in Deer Isle Village. Pictured here is Emily Brett Lukens discussing the artwork with a visitor during an opening of the 2019 exhibition season.

They have possessed themselves of our country. It is now in our power to dispossess them and recover it, if we will but embrace the opportunity before they have time to assemble together and fortify themselves.
