COVER ARTIST DAVID DRISKELL
Born to a family of Georgia sharecroppers, David Driskell was a leading collector, connoisseur, and scholar of African American art and a primary conduit for bringing Black artists into the mainstream. Driskell first came to Maine in 1952 as a student at Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture, where he fell under the spell of Maine’s natural beauty—particularly the pine forests, which would continue to influence him throughout his career. Later, he gave back to Maine’s art world through his leadership at virtually all of Maine’s finest educational institutions and musuems. He led the art department of the University of Maryland, College Park for more than 30 years, and a major art center dedicated to African art was named in his honor, The David C. Driskell Center for the Study of the Visual Arts and Culture of African Americans. His powerful works pull from Abstract Expressionism, African masks, Coptic art, modernism and cubism. The history of all art appears in his works. “David Driskell: In Search of the Creative Truth” is a film, produced and directed by Richard Kane. It captures the artist in rare, creative moments making art and waxing philosophical about the obligation of the artist to search for the creative truth “til his or her dying day.” The film can be seen on Vimeo. Driskell passed away from complications of COVID on April 1, 2020, soon after this photo was taken. Text and image courtesy of Richard Kane and Greenhut Galleries 18

There are few places anywhere that are as pleasant as the Maine Coast and inland lakes and mountains during summer. And it’s challenging to find an art community as talented, spirited and independent as Maine’s. One reason for the depth and standing of Maine art is it’s rare pedigree. The isolation, rugged granite coastlines, and perfect slanting light has captivated many of America’s leading painters. The list is long and includes Frederick Church, Winslow Homer, John Marin, Rockwell Kent and many, many others. Today, Maine art is presented in galleries by knowledgable gallery owners who, by and large, have long-term and intimate relations with gallery artists. It is also beautifully shown in many artist studios and artist cooperatives. Maine Gallery + Studio Guide is your passport to this extraordinary world of Maine art. Keep it handy in your glove compartment or purse, and it will lead you to unexpected discoveries. Introduce yourself to artists and gallery owners and you may be surprised at the warm reception. Collecting Maine art may broaden your experience and expand your knowledge. If you don’t already collect Maine art, you can start with a single painting. Suzanne and I invite you to visit mainegalleryguide.com to find out what’s happening near you. (Use the QR code below.) While there, sign up for Café des Artistes, our roundup of Maine art news, openings and shows, and you will always be up-to-date and well-in-touch with Maine art news, events and exhibitions.

She travels from the Portland wharfs to the downeast Bold Coast to draw inspiration for her paintings. Liz’s work is on view at Art Space Gallery in Rockland.
Gallery 302 is open for business but they are not currently having indoor receptions due to public health concerns. However, they have decided to hold Art in the Park this summer at Shorey Park in Bridgton on July 16 (rain date July 17). This is one of Bridgton’s most popular summer events. Art in the Park attracts crowds to the lovely park setting, which is filled with artists selling their work, live music and food booths. Always a good time! 44

The Olson House of “Christina’s World”
Hidden Art in Cushing by Pam Cabanas
The drive from Thomaston to Friendship uncovers hidden gems and historic art sites. On the River Road through Cushing, you’ll find the fascinating Langlais Sculpture Preserve. continuing down the River Road along the beautiful St. George River, you will come to the Olson House, full of memories of old Maine and the place where artist Andrew Wyeth painted for over 30 summers. The Olson House and Christina’s World are icons known the world over. Backtrack off Hathorne Point Road, and you may catch a great show at Arts in the Barn at the Cushing Historical Society. If you continue on Pleasant Point past historic Maple Juice Cove, a right on Salt Pond Road takes you to Friendship, and Salt Pond Studio on the corner of the Cushing Road. Salt Pond Studio hosts openings, often with live music, all summer long. Farther on into town, catch the Friendship Village Coop and a fabulous meal at Jameson Point Lobster. A great day of exploration ends with sunset over Friendship Harbor and her scenic fleet of well over 100 lobster boats.
Clare Manon is the owner of Monkitree in downtown Gardiner. At Monkitree, Manon showcases the art and craft work of local artists and some not-so-local artists and craftspeople whose work she loves.

Wiscasset: an intimate art scene by Lucia Droby
Welcome to Wiscasset, a classic Maine village with boats and lobster buoys bobbing in the harbor. Wiscasset has unique shops along Main Street benches, trees, wide brick sidewalks, and an art scene that is intimate and spectacular. The resident galleries, Sylvan Gallery and Wiscasset Bay Gallery, span centuries of artists from contemporary Mainers to European masters, both with on-site artist/owners who gladly share their knowledge and insight. The summer season brings added creative excitement with Maine Art Gallery’s series of dynamic exhibits, just minutes from the Village center. The gallery hosts the not-to-be-missed Saturday evening openings, a place and time to see exceptional art, meet the artists, and enjoy tasty tidbits with locals and visitors from away. In summer 2022, Maine Art Gallery ventures into the village center from June 29 to July 9 with its renowned plein air event. Watch and talk with accomplished painters as they capture highlights of the season and place on canvas. Wiscasset Creative Alliance is a young non-profit that provides a home base for established community initiatives and welcomes visitors to the 10th year of the Wiscasset Art Walk on the last Thursday of June, July, August, and September, 5-8pm. Always expect the unexpected!

When you take home Maine art several things can happen: you beautify your home and add value to it and your family; you give an artist the means to create new art, and support their family and community; you gain new insights about your new art from a knowledgeable gallerist or the actual artist; you can look at your new art everyday at home and relive memories of your wonderful visit to Maine. 83

ACADIA/DOWNEAST The Zillman Museum in Bangor, formerly the UMaine Musuem of Art, has expanded to include five new gallery spaces. Last fall’s “The Big Stitch” exhibition featured a dramatic collection of larger-than-life creations by San Francisco based artist Sidney Russell.
Mother’s Art Gallery & Antiques is located in an 1841 barn in Columbia Falls, the heart of Down East Maine. The new gallery is a wonderful place to see an outstanding selection of paintings, religious curios, and charming antiques and assemblages. 112
ACADIA/DOWNEAST
Annette Dowd, Director of Sohns Gallery in Bangor is with featured artist Gintarė Jautakaitė, whose show “Sinking Gardens” is a statement about the dangers of climate change and rising ocean levels. Jautakaitė, originally from Lithuania, has been a European singing sensation for years. Her stunning and moody yet whimsical floral waterscapes display skill and vision.
Charles and Amy Sidman welcome art lovers to the Argosy Gallery and Argosy II in Bar Harbor. This is Amy Sidman’s 30th year selling fine art and Argosy Gallery is a living link to the over 150 year tradition of fine art in Acadia and Mount Desert Island. 113

Minavivana “Le Grand Sauteur” Minavivana appeared to be about 50 years of age, he was well over 6' in height and had in his countenance an indescribable mixture of good and evil. Looking steadfastly at me, he began his speech: “Englishman, although you have conquered the French, you have not conquered us! We are not your slaves. These lakes, these woods, these mountains were left to us by our ancestors. They are our inheritance; and we will part with them to none.” Alexander Henry “Travels and Adventures in Canada and the Indian Territories” (1760–1776)
