Edward Hopper American, 1882-1967

Photograph of Hopper painting Lighthouse Hill from the Whitney Museum of Art

It was in 1914 that Edward Hopper traveled to Maine for the first of nine summers that he would spend painting here. Having returned from a third trip to Paris in 1910, the artist had exchanged his midtown New York studio for one in Greenwich Village. Like many other downtown artists who had studied with William Merritt Chase and Robert Henri, Hopper sought a summer location in which to pursue plein-air painting. The art colony at Ogunquit was by that point well established, and Hopper spent the summer there in 1914 and 1915, when he was joined by fellow artists George Bellows, Robert Henri, and Leon Kroll. Fog thwarted Hopper’s productivity, however, and the following year he set out instead for Monhegan Island, where he passed the next four summers until 1919. It was there that he painted approximately 30 oil sketches, small panels characterized by vibrant jewel-toned hues, fluid paint handling, and sculptural surfaces. A few of these oils were exhibited early in the artist’s career, but rarely thereafter. Hopper returned to Maine in 1926, three years after he had taken up watercolor painting seriously, and to much acclaim. Based in Rockland, the artist enjoyed one of his most prolific summers yet. His depictions of the region’s working harbors, beam trawlers and lime quarries contributed to his growing reputation as a painter of New England. In 1927 and 1929, he worked in Portland, Cape Elizabeth and Pemaquid, producing his iconic lighthouse paintings and watercolors. Edward Hopper’s Maine, organized in conjunction with the Whitney Museum of American Art, will be on view at the Bowdoin College Museum of Art from July 15 through October 16, 2011.

Lucky you, lucky us If you are fortunate enough to be vacationing in Maine, you have come to the right place to tour a unique 3,500 miles of winding coastline and taste the freshest and best seafood. You are also in the right place to explore outof-the-way working fishing villages, hidden summer colonies of the wealthy, and the rugged grandeur of Maine’s interior and Western Mountains. And of course, you are in the best place for art. Maine has a celebrated history in the world of art. Marsden Hartley, John Marin, James Whistler, Edward Hopper and Frederick Church are some of the better-known artists who first translated the beauty of Maine to canvas, and in the process made it a new mecca for American painters. Maine has singular qualities that called to the artists of the day: quietude, unspoiled nature and dramatic coastal and interior panoramas. The state became the home to many prominent art colonies such as Ogunquit, Monhegan, Boothbay Harbor, Stonington and the Skowhegan School. Today, Maine art is celebrated by lively crowds at art walks, openings and exhibitions statewide. Many coastal villages are transformed into festive street parties with fun live music, diverse restaurants and galleries spilling happy guests into the summer night. Suzanne and I feel so thankful to be living here surrounded by such natural beauty, engaging cultural events and fine art. We welcome and invite you to enjoy the same and hope you will use Maine Gallery + Studio Guide to get you there. Happy Touring! P.S. Consult our color-coded calendar to see what’s happening near you, and sign up for Café des Artistes, our free Maine art email newsletter at www.mainegalleryguide.com.

Howard and Margaret Gallagher of Camden Falls Gallery and artist Diane Scott (center) celebrated the opening reception at their new location at 5 Public Landing. The new gallery is a light-filled space that opens up to Camden Harbor’s sights and sounds on one side as well as to charming Bayview Street. The Opening marked the 11th anniversary of Camden Falls Gallery, and was co-hosted by Maine Gallery + Studio Guide. The featured show this summer will be “The Penobscot, River, Bay and Beyond.”

Mars Hall Gallery in Tenants Harbor hosted an Opening Reception last August for a show for “Charles S. DuBack and The Drawing Group” who have been meeting for over 30 years to draw the nude figure in outdoor settings. Nice weather induced guests to overflow into the garden grounds for wine and conversation and to view more art on display. 40

Alex Katz receiving the 2010 Maine in America Award at last year’s Farnsworth Art Museum’s Summer Gala. This year’s Farnsworth Gala, taking place on Saturday, June 25, will honor photographer Paul Caponigro, whose exhibition “Paul Caponigro: The Hidden Presence of Places” will run at the Farnsworth from May 7 through October 9, 2011.

A visit to Monhegan is the perfect day trip and a chance to discover the charms of a sleepy Maine island and legendary artist mecca. Three different boat lines leave Boothbay Harbor, New Harbor and Port Clyde for the hour-plus cruise to Monhegan, leaving in the morning and returning late afternoon. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes and clothing and bring your camera. Pictured above is a typical summer scene with the “Rope House” (upper left), the island bulletin board for artist studios’ times and locations. See page 70 for a Monhegan map showing studio locations for Don Stone, Frances Kornbluth, Alison Hill and points of interest. 41

Maine is the real thing

Maine is the real thing when it comes to art, with a celebrated history, a world standing, and a long list of well known and lesser known artists. Keep Maine Gallery + Studio Guide close by, perhaps in your glove compartment, and it can be your guide to making your own art discoveries. Openings, receptions and art walks are great summer events to attend. Check out our Calendar in print (page 138) or online at mainegalleryguide. com for events happening near you. While online, sign up for Cafe des Artistes for free Maine art news, and like us on facebook.
