FRONT COVER ARTIST: ELIZABETH CURTIS Born in New York City, Elizabeth Curtis (1873-1946) developed an impressionist style through studies with John Twachtman and William Merritt Chase at the Art Students League. She also spent time at Giverny with Claude Monet, one of a number of American painters drawn to the French master. In addition to trips to Europe, Curtis spent time on the Maine coast. In a review of a show of her “paintings of land and water” at the Clausen Gallery in New York in 1901, the unnamed critic mentioned a number of Mount Desert subjects. The writer noted the “sense of atmosphere” in her work and how she managed to handle “delicate shades of air and light.” Curtis also showed with Doll and Richards in Boston, at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia, and with the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1931.
Elizabeth Curtis, self-portrait of the artist knitting before a window with a view of Manhattan.
While a consummate American Impressionist, Curtis painted a range of subjects in a
variety of styles. She also collaborated with Florence Choate (1878-1967), whom she had met at the Art Students League, on numerous children’s books, among them, The Story of Don Quixote (1922) and The Crimson Shawl: The Story of a Girl from Acadia (1941). They went to Paris together and shared a studio in New York City. Curtis later settled in Watertown, Connecticut.
Curtis’s view of Mount Desert Island from Little Cranberry Island is one of the many visual treasures offered in David and Carl Little’s “Art of Acadia” published by Down East Books. This unparalleled survey of the art and artists of this remarkable region underscores the diversity of vision of those individuals who found their muse in and around Acadia. 18

Welcome to a State of Art It is once again our honor and pleasure to present Maine Gallery + Studio Guide’s 2016 tour of Maine art. The following pages overflow with the work of Maine’s best studios and galleries with new discoveries at each page turn. Keep this guide handy in your glove compartment as you tour our state of art and you will be using the best guide to Maine art there is. I am excited that we are celebrating Acadia National Park’s 100th anniversary this summer. My father LeRoy Anderson was the administrative officer for Acadia during the 1970s. At that time we Andersons were fortunate to live in the enchanting Jordan Pond Gate House, across from the Jordon Pond Tea House in the heart of Acadia. Acadia is a true wonderland of natural beauty with bold rugged coastlines, beautiful lakes, mountains and pristine forests. It’s a smell of balsam fir and salt fog, with cool evenings that make you glad for your sweater. There’s nothing like Acadia anywhere else and I hope you have the chance to experience its magic. Promoting Maine art to the world is a big job. To help, we have a dynamic new website and a new Mobile app to make Cafe des Artistes, our roundup of Maine art news, openings and shows, available on phones and on the go. We created Café des Artistes 10 years ago to publicize the many great openings and shows of our galleries, studios and museums. Cafe has evolved from a radio show and podcast, to an extensive blog and regular email newsletter. Visitors can stay in touch with the lively Maine art scene by signing up for the Café des Artistes email newsletter at mainegalleryguide.com, downloading our new app, visiting us on Facebook, or cruising our colorful Café Blog at mainegalleryguide.com. Cheers,

Lorrie Maciag, director of the Fore Street Gallery, shows paintings by the late Paul Black, who painted popular scenes of Portland, Bangor and coastal Maine. Black, a studio artist from South Portland, passed away this past November. “He could paint Portland city scenes like no other artist”, Maciag said, noting she owns five of his paintings. “I have an Old Port snow scene of Exchange Street. I like the snowy days, the reflections of light, and the people walking through the snow with umbrellas.” A. Anderson photo.

Artist Adriance DeGroff poses with Jana Halwick, owner of Carver Hill Gallery, at an opening last summer. Primarily influenced by realism, DeGroff favors the works of two great British animal portrait painters, George Stubbs and Sir Edwin Landseer. The animal portraits she specializes in reflect unique 19th and 20th century styles. Carver Hill Gallery has been showing local contemporary fine art from Maine and beyond for more than ten years. A. Architect Toshiko Mori, a long-time summer resident of North Haven and the architect for the new Center for Maine Contemporary Art opening June 26, has been named to Architectural Digest’s Top 100 List for 2016. The AD100 is an annual list recognizing the top thought leaders in architecture and design in the world today. In naming her to the list, the editors of Architectural Digest state, “With her precise eye for balance and proportion, Toshiko Mori puts a fresh spin on modernism, incorporating innovative materials and exploring vernacular building types. These characteristics are exhibited in the new CMCA building with its form inspired by historic New England factories and its use of marine-grade zinc for siding.

Dianne Horton loves the smell of the sea and has large containers of shells, rocks, and seaweed in her studio allowing her to “inhale” these fabulous aromas during the winter months when she is unable to paint outside. Dianne’s Studio and Gallery is located at West Moore’s Shore Lane in Swanville. She has a busy show schedule appearing at the Bar Harbor Fine Arts on the Green, Windjammer Days in Boothbay Harbor, Belfast Juried Art Festival, CFAAM Shows and is represented by Beyond the Seas in Lincolnville.
Betsy Levine built her soda kiln and established Prescott Hill Pottery in Liberty in 2006. Her incised technique and atmospheric “painting” make Betsy’s high-fire stoneware and porcelain tableware, storage jars and evocative vessels unique and sought after. Prescott Hill Pottery is part of the Midcoast Potter’s Tour August 6-7, and is hosting a Summer Open House August 13-14 as well as a Holiday Open House December 3-4.

Lisa Hall, at Lisa Hall Jewelry in Northeast Harbor, graduated from Sarah Lawrence and studied classical jewelry making techniques in Florence, Italy. Lisa turned to seaglass as an opportunity to work with a new material integrating her impressive collection of seaglass, found over the years, on the beaches of coastal Maine islands. Her seaglass jewelry became a hit, almost overnight ,after she was discovered by Martha Stewart, who featured Lisa’s work both in her magazine and on her television show, and, as they say, the rest is history. Ray Carbone is a master carver and sculptor in Steubin. Skills learned during twenty-five years of wood and stone working converge in his sculpture. The tidal zone and its rhythm is his door yard. In addition to his sculpture, Ray, with his partner Geoff Zentz, offer fine cabinetry and woodworking created from regional hardwoods sawn & kiln-dried in Steuben. A. Anderson photo.
