FRONT COVER ARTIST:

Kosti Ruohomaa with Linhof circa 1955 (c) Black Star. Photographer unknown. Lofman Collection

KOSTI RUOHOMAA

Kosti Ruohomaa, 1913-1961, an only child born to Finnish immigrants, revealed his love of poetry and literature through mood-filled, expressive photographs that captured the northern New England weather and character of its people. National and regional pictorial news magazines featured Ruohomaa’s sensitive vision, his lens often focused on the hardy breed: woodsmen, farmers, ice cutters, and fishermen. In 1956, after almost a year traveling in the west, northwest, Alaska, and Canada for LIFE Magazine and his New York agency Black Star, Ruohomaa returned home to the family blueberry farm on Dodge Mountain, Rockland, Maine. Beginning January 1957, he selfassigned major projects of personal interest such as Monhegan Island lobster fishing and ocean perch fishing at the Grand Banks, seen on our cover. Ruohomaa accompanied Rockland Captain Jim Farrell and his three-man crew for ten days, departing on the steel hulled “Quincy” out of Portland. When the northeast storm broke, the fishermen dashed to the nets to begin the haul. Ruohomaa somehow secured on deck, made about five exposures with his 35mm, including this one, intent to capture the broiling high seas and enormous redfish catch at the peak moment. He later wrote to a friend, “Calm seas make lousy pictures.” More images from Ruohomaa’s career in editorial photography may be seen in concert with the Maine Photo Project “The Passionate Photographer, Kosti Ruohomaa’s Maine and Magazine Photojournalism” opening July 18 at the Maine State Museum in Augusta. A biographical monograph by Deanna Bonner-Ganter, “Kosti Ruohomaa, the Photographer Poet,” a Down East book published by Rowan and Littlefield, will be available in July. by Deanna Bonner-Ganter, Curator of Photography, Art & Archives Maine State Museum 18

Oh, the Art You Will See! We are most pleased to present Maine Gallery + Studio Guide’s 2015 tour of Maine art. The following pages overflow with the work of Maine’s best studios and galleries with new discoveries awaiting each page turn. With this guide in your glove compartment, you can tour Maine with confidence, and Oh, the Art You Will See! This is the 15th edition of the annual Maine Gallery + Studio Guide. As a small publishing company that works very closely with our studio and gallery clients, we have developed many wonderful and rewarding long-term relationships through the years. In the earliest beginning, Peggy Greenhut Golden, owner of Greenhut Galleries in Portland, signed up for our first full page ad sale and gave me the confidence to launch this publication. She has not missed an issue since and has continued to direct a landmark gallery. Peggy, a warm thank-you to you as well as a big thank-you to all our longtime supporters. We created Café des Artistes 10 years ago to publicize the many great openings and shows of our galleries, studios and museums. Cafe has evolved from a radio show and podcast, to an extensive blog and regular Bangor Daily News feature. Visitors to Maine can stay in touch with the lively Maine art scene by signing up for the Café des Artistes email newsletter at mainegalleryguide.com, visiting us on Facebook, or cruising our colorful Café Blog at mainegalleryguide.com. We continue to be honored to present and promote the art of Maine, an art scene second to none. When you purchase Maine art, you are adding value and beauty to your home and life, as well as having the best possible souvenir of Maine. Your purchase also resonates through the Maine art community by supporting an artist, allowing new art to be made, and allowing the artist to support his or her family and community. Art is a community here. You are personally invited to join us.

What started as an idea for one simple art exhibition turned into a twenty-year run for York’s George Marshall Store Gallery. The circa 1860s old general store building, owned and maintained by the Museums of Old York, is situated overlooking the historic John Hancock Wharf, now a designated working waterfront. Besides the idyllic setting, the gallery has become well known for its varied exhibition program featuring many of the area’s established and rising artists. Curator Mary Harding has planned a banner year to mark the gallery’s 20th anniversary, with shows featuring highlights from the past two decades as well as introducing new artists to the venue. The exhibitions change every six weeks and the opening receptions always draw an enthusiastic crowd. At Sharpe Gallery, a couple hold “Gray Sunday at an Art Fair”, a Michael Guinane painting they just acquired, with the artist himself. The event, “An Afternoon with Artist Michael Guinane” went over so well, the Sharpe Gallery is doing it again this year on Saturday, June 20, 2015, from 12 to 5 PM. Michael Guinane will once again spend the afternoon at the Gallery to discuss his art and inspirations. The public is invited to stop in during the afternoon and enjoy light refreshments and informative conversations with the artist. 22

Chris Becker is a photographer who is very comfortable shooting at night. His night landscapes are haunting, surreal and beautiful. The Chris Becker Gallery is located at 127 Ocean Ave. in Kennebunkport and shows a wide range of Chris’ award-winning fine art photography. Visit his gallery and website for upcoming shows.

“Diary of a River: Solargraphs of the Kennebec River by Johanna Moore” at the Glickman Library, University of Southern Maine, was the first of many planned shows for the Maine Photo Project. The January opening reception was lively and well attended. Here, guests Barbara Goodbody and Anne Zille, director of the Art Gallery at University of New England, socialize with Katherine Smith and daughter Elizabeth Moss, owner of Elizabeth Moss Galleries in Falmouth. SOUTH COAST + PORTLAND

The South Coast and Kennebunkport Area By Daniel Kany The Kennebunkport area lies at the cultural heart of Maine’s Southern Coast, a region as well known for its hospitality and art as for its sheer beauty. Its historic appeal to painters is no mystery: The rocky coast and beaches are not only scenic but accessible. And this combination has created a thriving community of art galleries. The picturesque setting of Ocean Avenue anchors Kennebunkport’s gallery scene. Nestled among highly-rated dining establishments like the Edgewater Inn and Stripers, traditional painting-oriented venues such as Landmark Gallery and Scott Bundy Galleries make for a comfortable cultural experience. But the area also features contemporary photography, most notably Chris Becker Gallery and F-8 Gallery, which features the work of Brad Maushart. The tradition of Maine painting at its best highlights artists who bring their real-time painting sensibilities to their work. Homer and Hopper might seem like fixed points now, but they were the cutting edge that redefined American painting. We see this sensibility in Kennebunk venues such as Deborah Randall Fine Art, an artist’s studio gallery where the landscapes are steeped in the materiality of paint. And we see it in some of the thriving newer venues such as the Sharpe Gallery, which showcases not only landscapes, but nudes and fantastically surreal abstractions by artists like Linda Murray. Just south on Route 1, there are excellent galleries of many different stripes, begining with The George Marshall Store Gallery in York. The Whitney Galleries in Wells feature traditional paintings with an updated range of work – from watercolors and oil landscapes to sculpture, jewelry and stained glass. Nearby is Corey Daniels Gallery, one of Maine’s best contemporary art spaces and the state’s leading venue for large-scale abstract and minimal paintings.

Robert Indiana’s SEVEN (1980/2003) at Seven Congress Square, is a significant acquisition for the Portland Museum of Art, and a meaningful addition to the public art in the city of Portland.

Art in Portland By Daniel Kany Architect John Calvin Stevens designed more than 1,000 buildings in Maine – about 300 of which were on the Portland peninsula. Stevens was a member of a group of painters who founded what became the Portland Museum of Art – Maine’s art beacon to the world. Quietly, Stevens was one of the nation’s most important architects: From his office in Portland, Stevens’ Shingle Style of domestic architecture gave America its homey look. The PMA, like so many Maine museums, is currently expanding. And it’s not alone: SPACE Gallery, the SALT Institute for Documentary Studies and the Maine Jewish Museum have expanded their contemporary art spaces in Portland. The Art Gallery of the University of New England, a ‘70s architectural gem, is growing as well, not only with building plans, but with the scope and scale of its in-gallery and outdoor exhibitions. Portland’s art scene is rich and complex, with venues ranging from the stately PMA to edgy collectives, sophisticated kunsthalles, established galleries, artist studios and commercial spaces that combine clothing, food or furnishings with art. The most energized moment in Maine art is Portland’s First Friday Art Walk, during which art venues of all sorts open their doors to the public and the streets are filled with artists and performers. Portland’s Old Port is anchored by Greenhut Galleries. One of Maine’s leading galleries for painting, it was established in 1977. Nearby, Fore Street Gallery is salon-style space thick with brushy, representational work. There are new galleries as well, such as the spacious Roux & Cyr. Art and fine craft can be found at many excellent spaces in the Old Port, such as Holly Hamilton Jewelry on Exchange Street. Running through Portland’s Arts District is Congress Street, which is centered by Maine art doyenne June Fitzpatrick’s contemporary art space and the handsomest art space around – MECA’s Institute of Contemporary Art. After artist Holly Meade passed away in 2013, her gallerist daughter opened She-Bear Gallery, which, in addition to Meade’s woodblock prints, features jewelry and work by other contemporary artists. 38

creative new spaces as established art venues. A co-owner of the tiny but intriguing Arthouse Picture Frames, for example, opened Ocean House–an effervescent new space in Cape Elizabeth. The Couleur Collection Gallery in Falmouth might seem focused on fashion, but its hundreds of linear feet of wall space make it a sizeable venue for visual art, including paintings by owner Marcia Feller. Having also recently added a new space, the Elizabeth Moss Galleries – Falmouth’s leading arts venue – features paintings by major Monhegan artists as well as an ever-growing roster of contemporary artists.

Harbor Square Gallery in Rockland is a popular spot even in the off season. Here ‘The January Men and Then Some’ perform at the gallery’s winter “Second Sunday Series”. Harbor Square Gallery is entering its 35th year in one of the town’s most beautiful and historic building, right next door to the Farnsworth Museum.

Last October, the Farnsworth Art Museum’s sculpture garden was transformed into the Fall Family Festival grounds, with free-style pumpkin carving, face painting, crafts, and live music. A colorful entourage of families wearing costumes and masks departed from the sculpture garden and paraded down Main Street. The Farnsworth Musuem has many community and family programs. A special Farnsworth exhibit, “Andy and Kosti,” explores the friendship between Andrew Wyeth and Kosti Ruohomaa, the Maine Gallery + Studio Guide cover artist. “Andy and Kosti” will be on view May 30 through Nov. 1. 48

Renowned Maine painter William Irvine signed copies of his new book “William Irvine: A Painter’s Journey” and spoke about his art at Gleason Fine Art in Boothbay Harbor last summer. Established 30 years ago by husband and wife team Dennis and Martha Gleason, Gleason Fine Art celebrates the rich art history of coastal Maine, particularly the longstanding connection between Boothbay Harbor and Monhegan Island. Visit this summer to see “Kevin Beers: the View from Here,” June 18 to July 28 and “Henry Isaacs: For the Love of Color,” July 30 to September 1.

This past December, Belfast kicked off the holidays with two evenings of art openings and street performances as part of Belfast Art’s special holiday art walk offerings. This summer, look for the return of one of Maine’s best and most festive artwalk scenes. 49

Founded in 1989, the Monhegan Artists’ Residency program (monheganartistsresidency.org) is a volunteer-run nonprofit supported by donors, art galleries, corporate sponsors, and foundation grants. “Thanks to the generous support of individual donors, the Fisher Foundation, and the Underhill Foundation, we are again able to support three residencies this year,” said Susan Danly, chair of the board of directors. The program now accepts applications from visual artists working in any medium at any stage of their career. All artists, who reside in Maine or have significant ties to the state are eligible to apply. In addition to the two five-week residencies on Monhegan Island for artists, the program offers one twoweek residency for a Maine K–12 art teacher.

An enthusiastic crowd gathered to hear Shoshannah White’s artist talk at the opening reception for her exhibition “Undercurrent” last summer at the Tides Institute & Museum of Art in Eastport. Eastport has the most eastern art colony in the U.S. and is the first town to see the sun each morning. The Tides Institute offers residency opportunities and StudioWorks to visual artists to deepen and develop their practice within a community setting.

Tyra Hansen, owner of The Gallery at Somes Sound, surrounds herself with art and natural beauty. Shown here with a piece by Deer Isle sculptor John Wilkinson, Tyra has assembled a leading fine art and furniture gallery situated in the perhaps prettiest spot in the prettiest village of Somesville. Tyra has just announced a collaboration with Pritam & Eames, a prominent East Coast gallery that specializes in American studio furniture. “Both The Gallery at Somes Sound and Pritam & Eames share a longterm commitment to 21stcentury fine art and fine furniture.” A. Anderson, photo.

Handworks Gallery in Blue Hill celebrates its 40th year of representing Maine art and fine craft. Diane Allen, who purchased Handworks in 2014, will open the 2015 season with a show of paintings and watercolor books by Marcia Stremlau, the gallery’s previous owner. Additional shows will include earth vessels by Melody Kane Lewis, a “Summer in Maine” group show, and a September show of Elizabeth Sawyer’s watercolors and printed ephemera collage works. The gallery will participate in Blue Hill’s First Friday events to be held July through October. A. Anderson, photo.

Cara Romano’s Gallery (KōT) in the Grind Building in Ellsworth showcases her one-of-a kind fine art jewelry and the jewelry of Jackie Haines and others in a real live working studio. Here Cara works at her studio bench, “My work is deeply rooted in traditional metal and textile techniques.” A visit to Gallery (KōT) is the perfect opportunity to see two creative and talented jewelers at work. The Deer Isle Artists Association is an organization of artists, both professional and emerging, and people who are interested in the arts. Many of the members live in Maine at least part of the year, but there is no actual residential requirement. Committed to promoting the visual arts in this part of Maine, the DIAA also encourages student artists by awarding scholarships to graduating high school seniors continuing their education in the arts. Exhibitions of paintings, sculptures, prints, drawings and photographs by members are held in the DIAA Gallery mid-May to late December, at 15 Main Street, Deer Isle.

The Maine Crafts Association MCA 2015 Master Craft Artist Award Recipients are Sam Shaw, jeweler and sculptor, craft community advocate and leader, and Rebecca Goodale, book artist, arts administrator and educator. Sam Shaw’s jewelry and sculpture reflect his inspirations and life experiences, from his degree in geology to a year-long trip around the globe, from nomadic winter residencies in America’s largest cities to time spent at Burning Man. Always impeccably designed and executed, Shaw was one of the early adapters of beach stone jewelry, beginning a career-long interest in precious versus non-precious materials and focusing on the contrast and juxtaposition of seemingly opposite elements. Visit his website and the amazing Shaw Jewelry Gallery in Northeast Harbor.

Annette Dodd is an artist, an art teacher, and involved family member of the Sohns Gallery in Bangor. Last summer she began painting a vintage post card on a prominently located Downtown Bangor Building. “I’m hoping the mural will inspire pride in the community and help people love their city and respect it as well,” said Dodd. “For people who come here from away, now when they come into downtown they’re going to be greeted with something special, something that someone who loves this town did.” Dodd hopes the mural will inspire other artists to create public art in Bangor. “I hope that this is the first mural of many murals.”
