about Mane Gallery + Studio Guide

Selling art in a time of pandemic In the Nov. 5 Cafe des Artistes email newsletter, I reported that as unsettleing as life has been lately, it was good to read Bob Keyes’ story in the Oct. 18 Portland Press Herald with the headline “Maine art sales surge during pandemic.” While the pandemic has hollowed out the art market globaly, Maine has seen a surge in art sales. The story explains “People love Maine, and when they can’t be here they want something on their walls that reminds them of Maine,” said Lyn Asselta, a pastel painter from Damariscotta who shows at Gleason Fine Art in Boothbay Harbor. “Faced with being locked down, people had to make decisions about their lives – what do I want around me, where do I want to be? The answer is Maine. When the world can’t give you the places that offer an opportunity to relax or rest, then you bring those places into your home.”

Showing your work and telling your story are more important now than ever

“The BEST resource in Maine for anyone who has an interest in art! Visitors to our state have all they need to know about where to look from Kittery to Eastport! If you are an advertiser, you know about the personal attention we receive from owners Anthony and Suzanne. Invariably, people new to the gallery say they found us through the Maine Gallery and Studio Guide! Class act all around!” – Jane Littlefield, Littlefield Gallery Taking some time with the 2020 Gallery Guide. From its incredible NC Wyeth cover to Imero Gobbato on the back (two absolutely iconic Maine artists), it’s a really gorgeous 20th anniversary publication…” – Elizabeth V. Senders, Small Wonder Gallery “Thank you so much for your incredible product – the Maine Gallery Guide just makes all the difference for everyone who is involved in the arts in Maine.” – Cynthia Hyde, Caldbeck Gallery “Always so impressed and look forward to it. Important work.” – David Peterson, studio artist

Pam Cabanas, en plein air “The Maine Gallery & Studio Guide is the absolute -Go To- resource, for anyone who has an interest in the Art and Artists of this beautiful state! Visitors have a conveniently sized book they can use as a perfect who’s who Art Reference whether they are in Kittery or Mount Desert Island.” – Donald Rainville, studio artist “Energetic, professional, knowledgeable, and caring – these are just a few of the many good words I have for Maine Gallery & Studio Guide.” – Charlotte Davenhill, Tidemark Gallery “Another beautiful and informative publication greatly boosting art and artists in Maine. The digital edition is especially important right now. Thank you and congratulations, Anthony and Suzanne!” – David Estey, studio artist “Thank you, Anthony, for this beautiful showcase of art and artists in Maine.” – Alice de Mauriac, River Arts Gallery

Our Cover Art My criteria for selecting the cover art for our annual guide to Maine art has always been simple: a dead Maine artist and an image that says “Pick me up.” Selecting the cover for what would be our 20th annivesary edition was tricky. We have displayed some stunning covers of late - how could we top them all? The search was over the moment I saw “The Harbor at Hering Gut” by NC Wyeth. Getting permission to reprint was another matter, and is another one of the many behind the scenes chores in getting the Maine Gallery + Studio Guide to press. Of all the estates of American artists, the Wyeth Family Estate is perhaps the most jelously guarded. After weeks of corespondence with the Brandywine River Museum of Art, we were given the rare permission to reprint it on our cover. I had never seen this painting before and suddenly it was everywhere in my little orbit and was even actually here in Maine at the Portland Museum NC Wyeth Show last year.
