Inland Maine Paintings by Penny Markley

Oil on Stretched Canvas

I was painting near Baxter Park with Katahdin in the background, when a visitor asked to take my picture and then e-mailed me this result.

Painting landscapes is my first love and what better place to live than Maine for a landscape painter? The scenery, light, and changing seasons enchant me. My paintings capture my reaction to this visual wealth which I strive to share with the viewer. I love the coast, but I live inland, and feel that it is somewhat neglected by painters. I find great beauty in fields, hills, marshes, lakes and mountains. I was painting in Baxter Park by a small pond known as a spot visited by moose. People stopped by all afternoon as I painted hoping to see moose, but none showed up until late afternoon, and then a cow, her calf, and finally a bull appeared. I took a lot of photos which I used to paint this scene. I don’t think bull moose are particularly paternal. He was interested in the cow.

Approaching Storm

18 x 24, Oil on Stretched Canvas $900 I was painting this lovely salt marsh when I noticed the threatening clouds. I raced to finish as fast as I could and picked up, but the storm never did arrive.

Marshes are some of my favorite subjects. I love the textures and the variety of colors they display in different seasons. This marsh is only a few miles from my home.

Pownalborough Courthouse 11” x 14’, Oil on Board, $425

This historic courthouse located on the Kennebec River in Dresden, Maine, was built in the 1760’s. It has served as a, tavern, post office, inn, church, and living quarters as well as housing court facilities. John Adams argued a case there. It has beautiful grounds, hiking trails, and a museum open to the public. I painted there this summer with a plein air group.

While walking in Rockland, Maine, I came across this crew working on the sailboat, Mistress. The light on the men on ladders captured my interest. I photographed the scene but didn’t notice the woman working under the boat until later when I studied the image. The boatyard is an invention. It was much more cluttered, but I didn’t feel like painting clutter.

Mistress

30” x 24”, Oil on Stretched Canvas, $1200

I was driving down a hill into the village of Dresden Mills when I saw a horse standing in a snow covered pasture. I loved the setting with its filtered light, the dark red barn, and the mist covered hill behind it. I pulled over and photographed the scene for a reference to use later.

Where’s the Grass?

20 x 20, Oil on Stretched Canvas, $950

My husband and I were exploring the new Woods and Waters Rational Monument created in 2016 by President Obama to preserve 87,563 acres in rural Maine. Since it borders Baxter Park, it offers a stunning view of Katahdin where I conceived the idea for this painting and took reference photos.

Katahdin from the National Monument 14 x 18, Oil on Stretched Canvas, $635

I painted this view earlier this September on location and was pleased that I had portrayed the depth and distance as I saw them. However It was overwhelmingly green at that time, so I brought the painting back to the same location in November and painted over what I had done before with the new variety of colors.

Looking Down on Torsey Pond

11 x 14, Oil on Canvas on Board, $425

This painting is based on the view from my dining room window. I love the light at the end of February.

Late Winter Evening

11 x 14, Oil on Stretched Canvas, $425

Double Top

11 x 14, Acrylic on Stretched Canvas, $425 Double Top has a profile almost as easily recognized as Katahdin. I was standing on a bridge on the road into Kidney Pond when I painted this, needing to move whenever a car came by. I have climbed a lot of the mountains in Baxter Park but not this one.

Possible Frames The simple pine floater frame (on left) works well with paintings on stretched canvas, not so well with work on board. The lower two can be used to frame any of the work shown here.
