What Does Eco-Sustainability Mean? Wikipidia: “Eco-sustainability is the human activity that regulates its own practice according to ecological assumptions in the context of sustainable development. The renewal of resources is at the centre of the eco-sustainable debate, and is seen as the intrinsic ability of the world to transform itself in a cyclical way, an ability that must be defended so as not to modify the delicate terrestrial equilibrium. It is eco-sustainable that influences our behaviour so that consumption of resources is such that the next generation receives the same amount of resources that we have recei-

ved from the previous generation. Sensitization towards the environment means that eco-sustainability makes its appearance also in fashion; favouring low environmental impact both in the cultivation of materials and in the production and marketing of garments. Developing an eco-sustainable product means choosing materials, processes and behaviours compatible with the surrounding environment without waste, for a circular economy that takes into account the life cycle of the product.

Eco-Sustainability and Materials

Plastic Plastic, due to its property and low cost, is the «forte» material of the modern economy

Today it is impossible to imagine a world without plastic. Since 1964, the production of plastic material is increased of 20 times, picking 311 millions of tons in 2014, the equivalent of over 900 Empire State Building. The production of material should double and almost quadruple within 2050. After a short cycle of first use, 95% of the value of the

plastic packaging material is lost and this worth 80-120 billions dollars a year. •32% of the globally-produced plastic packaging escapes the collection and recycling systems, generating significant economic costs and compromising natural systems such as the ocean, as well as obstructing urban infrastructure.

Negative Plastic Perception Issues like “plastics dispersed in the ocean are increasingly capture the attention of people and political representatives: At least 8 million tons of plastic pour into the ocean every year, which is equivalent to downloading a truck of rubbish in the ocean per minute. If no action is taken, it will increase up to two per minute by 2030 e four per minute by 2050. Plastics can stay in the ocean for hundreds of years in their original form and even longer in small particles, which means that the amount of plastic in the ocean accumulates over time. The best research currently available estimates that today there are over 150 million tons of plastic waste in the ocean. Without significant action,

in the ocean there may be more plastic in weight than fish by 2050. Ocean plastic has a significant impact on maritime natural capital. While the total economic impact is not yet clear, according to Valuing Plastic the annual damage of plastics to marine ecosystems is at least $ 13 billion a year, while the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) estimates that the cost of plastics dispersed in the ocean for tourism, fishing and transport industries amount to $ 1.3 billion a year in that region alone. Even in Europe, where the dispersion of plastics in the sea is relatively limited, potential costs for coast cleaning and beaches could reach 630 million euros (695 million dollars) per year

Future Plastic Production Forecast Plastics (including packaging) have negative effects on these areas: • Erode of natural systems as a result of dispersion in the soil and in the ocean. • Greenhouse gas emissions from production and incineration after use. The continuous strong growth expected in the production

2014

and use of plastic materials in general and plastic packaging in particular will spread the benefits of plastics to more and more people and more and more applications profits; however, if production and use continue within the current framework linear, the negative effects will grow enormously, as shown in the picture on the side.

Solution is: Recycle and Reuse ECO-SUSTAINABILITY requires that plastics never become waste; Rather, they must be included in the economy as valuable technical or biological substances. The new plastics economy is supported and aligned with the principles of CIRCULAR ECONOMY. In Europe today, 53% of plastic packaging could be recycled in an “eco-efficient” way The redesign of materials, formats, systems and the development of new technologies may require time, but “time to act is now!” creating collaborative partnerships between customers and suppliers where the common goal is the reduction of the environmental impact and a significant economic return in the revaluation of natural resources.

2. Reuse (Close Loop) 1.

Mainetti is able to recover the hangers no longer used by retailers recovering the hangers in good condition to be reintroduced in the sales program. This also includes the return of the hanger in the garment production countries, generally Middle-Far East (Close Loop). The reused program permit to achieve cost savings and a positive impact on environmental issues (especially in the reduction of carbon foot print)

2.

The hangers can be reused several times (even 5-6). Life of the hangers is a key factor; for this reason it is a must they will be designed by a concept of low environmental impact materials and have the strength to be reused the highest number of times.

3. Wood Plastic Composites (WPC) 1.

Compost material called WPC are made of mix of wood fibers and/or flours and thermoplastic materials (including PE, PP, PVC, PLA, etc.). In addition to wood fibers, WPCs can also contain other wood-cellulose and / or inorganic fillers.

2.

WPC materials significantly reduce the content of fossil raw materials (even over 50%).

3.

Mainetti offers different WPC solutions based on polypropylene (PP) and different types of bio-based fillers.

4.

The PP offers one of the best compromises between performance, costs and recyclability, moreover it is the polymer of fossil origin having the lowest environmental impact.

5.

Cost of the product more aligned with the cost of standard polymers compared to the use of bio-polymers.

6.

Currently valid for hanger but not for seals.

4. Bio-Polimers Biopolymers are produced by living organisms; they are polymeric biomolecules that can derive from fossil sources or from renewable sources. There are three main classes of biopolymers, classified according to the monomers used and the structure of the formed biopolymer: • Polynucleotides (RNA and DNA). • Polypeptides, which are short polymeric chains of amino acids. • Polysaccharides, which are often linear-bond polymeric carbohydrate structures. • Other examples of biopolymers include rubber, cork elements, melanin and lignin. Biopolymers

could

signifi-

cantly reduce our dependence on non-renewable fossil resources. Mainetti is actively collaborating with many producers of Biopolymers for over 15 years, contributing to the development of some of the most promising products available on the market today. Several biopolymers are now used by Mainetti in the production of hangers for specific projects developed in partnership with the customer. We are also in a testing phase of a PC paper seal which is a 100% biodegradable and compostable biopolymer, combined with a natural cotton cord. PROTEIN POLYSSACHARID STARCHES

Eco sustainable proposal for Polybags

In the Polybag sector,we have many Eco-sustainable options for LDPE and HDPE plastics:

.1 .2 .3 .4

Eco-Pure Compostable material (vincotte certification) Regenerated material Reduction in thickness (film air)

.21

1. Eco-Pure This is an additive that, when used in low doses under 1%, it enables the plastic product to become Biodegradable when introduced into an active composting or landfill environment. It is transparent and can be added to polyethylene without changing the appearance orstrength of the polybag. It is FDA,TSCA and EINECS certified. The material is available in all the Mainetti polybag production units. This additive won’t jeopardized the recyclable properties of the plastic material.

WHAT DOES ECO-SUSTAINABILITY MEAN?

.23

End to end services

2. Compostable It is a Biodegradable and Compostable product, or in other words, it becomes compost following a natural degradation process. It is certified by Vincotte according to European regulation EN13432 for composting. It can be derived from fossil sources or from renewable carbon materialat 20% or 30%. It can be easily extruded and processed and has no smell. The material has excellent mechanical properties. Extrusion can be from 30MY to 50 MY, with a semi-transparent, matte finish and it can be ordered on rolls or pre-cut (max length 65cm including the gusset). It can be used in all industrial processes (film extrusion, injection, thermo-forming). The cost of this material is approximately three times the cost of normal PE. ECO-PURE Biodegradable

COMPOSTABLE Biodegradable and compostable

3. Regenerated Material We re-use our printed or virgin PE production scrap for the extrusion of new film, which can be used for new LDPE and HDPE products. In standard production the PE film contains between 10 and 15% of recycled material, however, on customer request, we can use up to 50% of scarp material to produce the final product. The regenerated material is not usually completely perfect and can be slightly grey-looking, with some minor imperfections. For this reason it is unadvisable to produce bags of more than 50% recyclable material, because it makes the printing process almost impossible. The imperfections can only be seen on a thickness of over 50 micron. By using recycled material you can save up to 30% on the final cost. Mainetti can auto-certificate the percentage of the product which has been produced using recycled material.

WHAT DOES ECO-SUSTAINABILITY MEAN?

End to end services

4. Reduction In Thickness One eco-friendly solution could also be the use of less plastic in the final product. Therefore bags can be producted using PE of just 25 to 30 microns, with the same mechanical properties, while reducing the amount of plastic released into the environment. This thinner material facilitates the rapid degradation of the material, rather than more standard thicker plastics. So, in conclusion, a thinner polybag can have two major benefits. Firstly, there is less plastic in the enviroment and secondly the plastic produced is able to degrade much faster.

Eco sustainable proposal for Bags / Boxes / Tags

The environmentally sustainable concepts that can mostly be used when presenting to the Customer paper items as bags, boxes or tags can be listed below:

.1 .2 .3 .4

Recycled papers Ecologic papers FSC certifications Jacron

Mainetti and Reca Group can suggest the above solutions for packaging or tags as well

.29

1. Recycled Paper The recycled paper is produced by using waste paper. The production of the recycled paper is based on recycling raw material (paper and cardboard) on permitting to reduce new trees cutting for paper production and waste quantity in the dump as well. The waste paper can be kneaded again by adding other natural material derived from bamboo, seeweed or fruit i.e. The production process of the recycled paper is similar to the one of the normal paper except for the initial phase. For the normal paper, the mixture starts from cellulose whereas, for the recycled one, after having eliminated other remains (metals, plastics and inks), it is macerated and filtered inside purifiers.

The recycled paper can’t be optical white as pure cellulose paper so some impurities are visible at naked eyes. This is the result of a new mixture of different celluloses. In the wide range of recycled papers, the most important are:

1. Biokraft

Brown color paper typical of the recycled papers, produced by using 100% of waste material coming from high quality selection. This material guarantees surface and color homogeneity. It is made with a percentage of natural resins that allows it to be more resistant to water. .

2. Duplex

Born by matching in the machine two different 100% recycled mixtures. This feature is particularly interesting from an aesthetic (one side white and the other avana) and structural point of view because the paper becomes stronger and more resistant than the kraft. standard supports

3. Shiro Echo and Algae (Favini)

Shiro Echo is the spearhead of the recycled papers and uses 100% of post-consumer material whereas another type of paper of the same range exploits surplus algae together with post-consumer cellulose. This type of paper offers a good white shade even if it consists of recycled fibers.

4. Crush (Favini)

This support belongs to a wide range of papers produced with by-products from the agro-industrial processes such as coffee, olives, almonds and citrus replacing up to 15% of the trees cellulose.

5. Remake (Favini)

It is a particular type of paper with a strong personnality. Its tactile quality and natural look are the result of a re-use of leather by-products that replace 25% of cellulose while 40% of the present cellulose derives from post-consumer material.

2. Ecological Papers For ecological papers, we mean the supports that are partially or completely recycled whose manufacturing process has a low environmental impact. In its composition, there are also materials different from cellulose.

Tree Free Paper: derived from yearly plants as bamboo, cotton and bagasse without any trees cellulose.

Apple Paper: derived from

a mixture of cellulose and apples waste.

Stone Paper:

based on stone powder and non-toxic resins.

Stone Paper:

A new type of paper composed of 80% calcium carbonate and the remaining part of high-density polyethylene and non-toxic resins. Calcium carbonate is widely used in nature specially in a great variety of stones (e.g. marble, travertine, aragonite, calcite): hence, the name of the new paper. Stone paper is produced, indeed by reducing in powder the stones containing calcium carbonate (such as building material residues) and mixing them with special resins that create its structure. This type of paper doesn’t contain cellulose and has a reduced intake of Co2 and a limited water consumption.

Shiro Tree Free

Type of paper belonging to the Shiro Favini range made with fibers derived from yearly cultivation e.g. bamboo, cotton and bagasse. There is no cellulose so it can not be certified FSC.

Apple Paper (Frumat)

Organic and ecologic paper made with a mix of cellulose and industrial waste of apples peels and cores; it is available for tags or bags, tissue and packaging.

FSC certification guarantees that the raw material (cellulose) comes from forests and supply chains managed with responsibility in strictly respect of the environmental, social and economic standards.

PEFC: Programme for Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes.

It is a certification that guarantees the respect of the principles, indicators and production processes defined in the Ministerial Conferences for the forests protection in Europe.

Fabric The world of fabrics is divided mainly into two macro-categories Natural fabrics Synthetic fabrics In both categories, textile manufacturers are concentrating their efforts to expand the range of eco-sustainable products commercially viable on environmental and social level.

.43

Fabric For natural materials, regarding packaging, the options that could be offered to customers are 1. ORGANIC COTTON Organic cotton is a cotton derived from organic crops, so it is produced following a low environmental impact chain. For the production of organic cotton, only organic farming methods are implemented, eliminating the use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers, which are toxic to the environment and to the final consumer, since they are substances that persist in the cotton itself. In addition to the use ban of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, organic cotton, to be certified as such, must not come from genetically modified seeds (GMOs). The production of organic cotton is certified by third-party entities verifying that the producers use only methods and products permitted in organic production. 2. COTTON CERTIFIED «GOTS» “GOTS” is an international

certification declaring the authenticity of the ORGANIC production of the product. It is recognized as the most important standard for the sustainable production of garments and textiles made from natural fibers from organic farming such as organic cotton or organic wool. The Global Organic Textile Standard has been developed by leading international organizations in organic agriculture in order to guarantee the consumer that organic textiles are produced in compliance with strict environmental and social criteria applied at all levels of production, from the collection of natural fibers to the subsequent manufacturing phases, up to the labeling of finished product. GOTS, responding to the strong demand for common production criteria by the industry and the distribution of textiles and clothing, has obtained a wide international recognition that allows those who produce and sell organic textiles to have at their disposal a certification accepted in all the main markets.

Fabric 3. BCI COTTON

The Better Cotton Initiative (BCI) is a non-profit organization that promotes better standards in agriculture and cotton practices in 24 countries. The initiative now represents around 12% of world cotton production worldwide. The BCI meets the UN objectives to achieve better global water sustainability and sustainable agriculture. As of 2016, BCI has more than 50 sellers and over 700 suppliers.

BCI also promotes the use of best irrigation practices with farmers, as well as reducing the use of fertilizers. Some examples indicate a 40% reduction in water consumption by farmers in Pakistan and farmers in India. BCI cotton can be in both natural and dyed color while still respecting the above requirements.

Syntetic Materials As far as synthetic materials are concerned, fabric proposals are based on the recycled principle and start from a common basis of PET What is PET? PET is the abbreviation of a particular plastic (POLYETHYLENE-TEREPHTHALATE) having the advantage of being very light, waterproof, resistant and safe. Although it contains the word “phthalates in the name, these are not used in the synthesis of PET. It is the most used plastic for bottling water and other food as it maintains its original purity. Once finished in the waste

it is a material very easily to be recycled and transformed into other products. Once collected, the various forms of PET are sent to the recycling centers, where they are passed through millstones that convert the material into powder form. This powder then goes through a separation and cleaning process that removes all foreign particles such as paper, metals or other plastic materials. Having been cleaned up, according to market specifications, recovered PET is reused in a variety of products such as containers for non-food uses and indeed also textiles.
