A spirituals Journey For Amir Kmaal calligraphy means exporting his soul on canvas. It is like going back to the heritage of his culture . The use of calligraphy as an expression of his emotions is also a question of his identity in the perspective of his culture. Calligraphy is nothing alien to him despite the fact that as a modern Pakistani painter Kammal also uses calligraphy as a spontaneous manifestation of his artistic ability. In case, his act is not an end in itself but refers to the other artistic intentions. Amir kamaal first took his training in calligraphy at home from the masters of the traditional calligraphy painters. Later, he obtained a certificate in the art from Turkey is acknowledged as a place for perfect Arabic calligraphy. There are obvious traces of Turkish style of calligraphy in his paintings. As a creative artist he produces image with a new outlook retaining his own identity. Kamaal’s palette retains hues associated with traditional Arabic calligraphy. He also employs silver and gold leaf to achieve his set goals. Composition sensibility is also evident in his work.He makes aesthetics use of geometric forms and at places each form becomes an independent art picture. His calligraphy lives and moves on the flat surface seems to be the space of a mystic state of mind. This mystic state of mind can be better understood by the those who have a full understanding of the spiritual background.Kamaal displays a thorough understanding of this background. His works are the echo of a language which is deciphered and understood through sensibility in meditation and concentration. At this point he does not create but the elan vital takes hold of him and reveals itself in his work. The writings on his canvases are accompanied by square and circle. Kamaal with his calligraphy decorates them in a style which make them appears like pieces of jewellery. But this rendition does not divert them of their spiritual value. Even some western painters call their coloured squares meditation paintings .Kamaal concentrates on circle more elaborately. On some of his canveses circle becomes the central image. The symbol of the circle has been related with self. It experiences the totality of the psyche in all its aspects, including the relationship between man and the whole of nature. When it is employed in muslim calligraphy it obviously refers to the relationship of man with God. His circle represents thr cosmos in its relation to divine powers. Kamal admits: While painting calligraphy , my art and meditation becomes one ; here my inner and outer reality meets.’’ Amir Kamal has been paintings calligraphy since 1997.He is committed to his passion .At his recent show in, Lahore he has made a shift in his medium. His early artworks were on paper and wasli. This time he has chosen to paint on canvas. He has been participating in calligraphy exhibitions since 2000 at home and abroad. This is 6th solo exhibition .
