Juxtaposition

his month, we borrowed a word from our profile feature and selected juxtaposition as our theme. Juxtaposition is a contrast of one thing next to another. In photography, you would see it as the contrast of light and dark. On our cover, the way Arthur Zards is specifically lit in the face while his body is largely in the dark. We are using the light as an opportunity to feature his face…his creative mind…the focus of our piece on him. In writing, it is the closeness of two things that you might not expect next to each other. Normally, we here at M&L write for women and about women. However, within this month’s pages, our narratives center around the male perspective.

Outside of the articles, this issue is also a contrast and closeness to our own brand. You will notice that we have updated the cover to help identify the theme and call attention to our stories. We hired a graphic designer, Johnny Garcia of Urek Media, to evolve that aspect of our brand. Additionally, he has created a palette and tone to the magazine to keep us consistent. We’ve hired additional writers to round out the tone. Finally, we have leaned into our advisory board for consultancy on layout and article density.

This is a continuation and a start. A juxtaposition of the closeness of our initial attempt next to the freshness of new ideas. Main & Luxe is stylish and posh. We are a coffee table magazine now and forever. We bring you the library, community engagement, and profiles meant to inspire! Together we hope to create conversations and stitch the community a bit closer together.

As a nod to Father’s Day, our theme this month compelled us to make the Men’s Issue! We bring you all the things you can read about for the men in your lives— husbands, fathers, sons, brothers, and beyond. The issue is meant to spark conversations and have fun within the pages.

Breweries By JD Hollyfield

Paul Kreiner, Co-owner and Brewmaster, Noon Whistle

The start of summer fun brings a rush

of outdoor socializing: grills are fired up, volleyball nets and bag games are set up, and the pool rafts are blown up. And what goes with all of this? A beer. June is a spectacular month to pull out that lager wish list and flock to local breweries for craft beer tastings. Whether it’s in the comfort of your own backyard or an outside patio at a favorite brewery, indulging in this local experience is a great way to treat your hops and barley palette. Unsure where to start? No worries, the thirsty team at Main & Luxe did the work for you! Noon Whistle 1748 W Jefferson Ave First on our recommendation list is a local brewery located in the heart of downtown Naperville. Co-owner and Brewmaster, Paul Kreiner and his family spent their summers vacationing in a small town in central Wisconsin, where every day at noon the town whistle blew, encouraging the town to crack open their first beer of the day. It was from this special tradition that he formed and opened, alongside his best friend, Noon Whistle. From their low-alcohol content to barrel-aged brews, a tour and tasting is a beer connoisseur’s dream. I sat down with local Noon Whistle patron, Matt Potter and 10

Main & Luxe, June 2022

got the scoop on what to check out. Starting with a standard ale and easy crowd pleaser is their Cozmo pale ale. It’s light on the taste buds and alcohol content. “Your tastebuds will thank you for the hoppy mixture of grapefruit and faint taste of orange. If you’re not into tasting a variety and prefer to stick to one flavor, this is a great choice.” We appreciate a man who knows his beers, and he warned us not to get too attached to any specific flavor, because not all craft beers are brewed year-round. To avoid the heartbreak, he advised to check out their Hop Prism Blue. It’s a higher percentage in alcohol content and packs a palette punch if your jam is non-hazy IPA’s and it’s brewed all year round. From their entire soft body to full gummy selection of mouthwatering beers to hazy IPA’s, there’s no wrong choice at this place. He didn’t let me leave before mentioning that they offer live music and food trucks almost every weekend. Khaos Brewcade and Kitchen 12337 Illinois Rte 59, Plainfield Owner and entrepreneur, Corey Knowles of Khaos Brewcade and Kitchen is making it known that breweries aren’t only just about enjoying a delicious hazy IPA. from Naperville, this place is a goldmine for family outings and/or drinks with friends. The kid in you will shine through with the abundance of classic arcade games. While I may have had my eye on an old school game of PacMan, Corey’s focus was pairing me up with a mean game of frogger and a tasty IPA. Want a recommendation from the expert himself ? His favorite, by far, is the Sweet Emotionz. “You can smell the fresh orange with every sip of this glorious nectar,” he explains while pouring the perfect glass. “We promise you that this delicious Wheat Ale will make you grow a huge pair of...Oranges!! We bring the sweet to the wheat with over 130 lbs of Oranges. Unfiltered and refreshingly light, this explicitly Orange Ale belongs on your playlist all year long!” Come and dominate some pinball, sample a West coast inspired IPA and even show up hungry. Khaos has a full menu. Bringing the kids? No worries. Khaos has plenty of sitters while you enjoy a crafted brew in the form of some arcade classics. THE CRAFT BEER HANDBOOK: Need help deciding on what beer to choose? I searched out the most qualified beer drinkers to help break it down. IPA/Hazy IPA - Bitter, bold, and trendy with a high alcohol content. Perfect for when you want to feel sophisticated or to quickly wash away your sorrows. Careful with this one. Known to put users to sleep in the front yard. Lager/Pilsner - Light and refreshing. This is your choice when you need to stay hydrated on the boat all day or to replenish your sweat while admiring your freshly cut lawn. No need for counting these can be enjoyed all day. Stout/Porter - Dark and smooth. Hints of chocolate and nut flavors make for a complex brew fit for a cold winter night by the fire. High caloric intake can help build your off-season waistline. Perfect companion to winter binge eating on the couch. Brown Ale/Red Ale - Heavy on the malt and light on the hops make for a sweet and silky mouthfeel. For when you can’t handle the bitterness of an IPA but want more flavor than your average watery lager. The “hey I’m drinking a craft beer, but you’re not” choice. Pale Ale/English Pale Ale - IPA’s little brother provides some hoppy flavor without the higher alcohol content. For those who like the flavor of IPAs, but need to get into Speedo shape for the summer.

German mill work and several fireplaces. The Chicago Athletic Association underwent a major renovation in 2015, which transformed the building into a 240-room luxury hotel for all. The many intricately designed spaces within its walls make for a high-end night out with friends or coworkers, complete with unique offerings in dining, ambiance, and activities.

The ultimate Guy’s Night Out starts with

an iconic location steeped in history, while also offering modern-day, luxurious touches in downtown Chicago. Built in 1893, the Chicago Athletic Association Hotel is an extravagant Venetian-Gothic style building designed by the well-known, Chicago-based architect Henry Ives Cobb. It once served as a private club to the elite, and its founders included AJ Spalding of Spalding Sporting Goods, Marshall Field of retail empire Marshall Field and Company, and Cyrus McCormick of McCormick Harvesting Machine Company. The club opened its doors to 3,000 members and a 10-year waiting list. One of the Hotel’s famous features includes its grand marble staircase with beautiful ironwork railings. Near the staircase is the Drawing Room that retains its original purpose for drinking and socializing. It is a gorgeous, masculine space that boasts

Located on the second floor of the hotel, the Milk Room, is a distinct destination that was once a speakeasy used by club members during Prohibition. The Milk Room has a hidden eight-seat microbar meant for sipping rare vintage spirits, including an immense selection of curated whiskies. Each cocktail is made to taste, and many rare creations can be viewed

on the establishment’s Instagram page. “Milk Room has a brilliantly curated inventory of allocated and vintage items, ranging from a rhum Agricole distilled in the late 1800s, to decades-old Armagnacs, high-priced rare bourbons, and beyond. After guests enter our antique, stained glass doors into our intimate eight-seat bar, our bar team will guide you on a tour of our rare and vintage offerings in both specially crafted cocktails as well as curated spirit flights,” said Milk Room’s Bar Manager, Sam Parrie. To best blend a dining experience with a Milk Room visit, the James Beard award winning Cherry Circle Room is the perfect fit. A tasting menu is led by the guest’s spirit of choice, and the more intimate group setting is a retreat from the crowd, which can help the guys delve into conversation while reveling in fine cuisine.

Tea Time! By Staci Hauk

Tearooms often conjure nostalgia for a

simpler time, and two local women are innovating the notion with experiences that boast lush ambiance and gourmet goodies, reminiscent of high teas enjoyed in generations past. They are here to remind everyone to make the time to ‘take tea.’ Pinecone Cottage Tea House 1029 Burlington Ave, Downers Grove Chef Pamela Geralds fell into the tearoom business over 30 years ago. An avid gardener, she began her business by selling vegetables on the honor system from the front yard of her charming, 1905 cottage next to the Downers Grove Golf Club. She would host tea parties on the pastoral property incorporating the fresh herbs, fruits, and vegetables grown in her garden. Word-ofmouth spread, and in 2001, Pamela and her husband established the Pinecone Cottage Tea House in downtown Downers Grove. The name was derived from the towering pine trees that surround their cottage. “I source my teas from different places, and we blend some ourselves. They each have their own profiles and are hand-picked for specific reasons. We pair them with foods like you would with wine. We host a variety of events at the Tea House, about one hundred showers a year! We also host cooking classes that incorporate tea. And there is a very specific way we are different from others like us—we cater. It’s very labor intensive, but we love it! We cater events all over the Chicagoland area, making us accessible to those outside of the immediate area,” Pamela explained. Pamela has perfected the all-important high-tea treat, the scone. Her recipe has been worked on extensively, originating at the Ballymaloe Cookery School the Geralds attended in Ireland. She also intertwines 20

family recipes—such as her shortbread—that she creates in different savory and sweet flavors. The popularity of these pastries led to a cookbook, 12 Months of Teas, available at the shop. The Pinecone Cottage is reservations-only for the three-course tea, and it offers outdoor dining surrounded by Pamela’s beautiful flowerpots and hanging baskets. tearoom to celebrate. The pop-up did two seatings a day, and people were coming by inquiring if it was a full-time establishment that they could frequent. “So, I decided to choose a larger store within the Promenade, and here I’ve stayed!” Lavender Fields provides its own take on a traditional British tearoom with a threecourse afternoon tea experience including scones, savories, and dessert. The courses are served over two hours and paired with three different teas. The menu’s most soughtafter items are the blueberry-lemon scones and quiche, along with purple rain tea and lavender lemonade. “The most important thing that I am trying to convey is that life should never be too busy to take tea. I try to impart comfort for guests at Lavender Fields—through food, atmosphere, and conversation. Or, sometimes, no conversation!” Relax, put your feet up on an ottoman, and enjoy a moment of silence. Lavender Fields is reservation only. Three-course private tea events are also available.

Nicole J.T.E. Jones, Owner of Lavender Fields Tearoom, first found success by mastering the infamous macaron. “I always loved the challenge of mastering a difficult recipe, and I knew I could do so with macarons, as I just wasn’t impressed with the ones I was tasting (during the macaron craze). I finally tasted one I loved and got to work perfecting it on my own—I was not going to be defeated by a cookie,” said Nicole laughingly. Nicole hoped to continue this as a hobby/parttime endeavor—then Jones’ husband, who worked in the urgent care field, contracted Covid-19 at the onset of the virus in 2020. He was in the hospital for six weeks in a coma and on life support, after which, he could not work, struggled to walk again, and developed severe heart and kidney issues. When her husband got the good news that he’d made it onto the heart and kidney transplant list, Nicole decided to host a pop-up Mother’s Day

SYMPTOMS OF LOW TESTOSTERONE Physical Reduced energy Reduced endurance Diminished performance Loss of body hair Fatigue Obesity

Sexual Reduced sex drive Erectile dysfunction

Emotional Depression Cognitive dysfunction Reduced motivation Poor concentration Memory Issues Irritability

Low Test

By Neha Shaw, MD

Low-T, it’s a little discussed men’s health topic. Low testosterone is commonly understood as a link to low sex drive and erectile dysfunction, but testosterone plays a more comprehensive role in our health. Testosterone is produced by the human body and plays a role in general and sexual health. Low-T affects 40% of men above the age of 45, and testosterone levels drop by 1% per year starting at age 30. Symptoms of low testosterone are more systemic than doctors originally realized. Low testosterone has been linked to hair loss, fatigue, changes in mood, memory loss, weight gain, and adverse effects on bone health. Unfortunately, testosterone levels are not part of routine lab work and symptoms can be chalked up to the normal aging process. Many men may not discuss these symptoms with their doctor or partner. Normal testosterone levels fluctuate throughout the day. Ideal testosterone levels range from 300-1000 ng/dL according to the Food and Drug Administration. Low-T is diagnosed at levels below 300 ng/dL, in addition to the symptoms mentioned above. Currently, there is insufficient evidence to recommend routine testing. Screening questionnaires have not proven effective leading to a wide range of under and over treatment by practitioners. If low-T is evident, it is recommended that a more comprehensive hormone panel be done for further evaluation. Blood work should always include prostate cancer screening for appropriate patients.

health prior to treatment as some testosterone therapies can negatively affect fertility. Prescription testosterone replacement comes in a variety of modalities, including injections, patches, pills, pellets, and topical creams. Current research is mixed on testosterone treatment indications, as there is a need for additional long-term safety data. Prescription testosterone replacement has boomed in the last ten years into a multibillion dollar industry. Conversely, there is the frightening wave of testosterone boosters in the unregulated supplement industry. A quick internet search provides a plethora of testosterone supplement options catered to improving male performance from the boardroom to the bedroom. Many times, supplements are marketed as “all-natural” or “natural substances only,” but this does not necessarily mean safe. As well as supplements, telemedicine cohorts are now offering at-home testosterone testing. The

jury is still out on the accuracy of home testing for testosterone, and it may unsafely lead to selfmedication with over-the-counter supplements. Unfortunately, the most evidence-backed, scientifically proven treatment modality gets the least attention when it comes to low-T. Lifestyle changes and weight loss consistently show improvement to testosterone levels1. Exercise and a balanced diet have been demonstrated to boost testosterone. Other critical components include sleep, stress, and adequate vitamin D levels. Overall, the role of testosterone therapy is rapidly evolving as we understand the spectrum of its functionality. One of the safest and most consistent interventions you can make is with improving lifestyle! I always say in medicine, knowledge is power, and you are your own best advocate! 1-Mulhall JP, Trost LW, Brannigan RE et al: Evaluation and management of testosterone deficiency: AUA guideline. West Suburban Community Pantry By Ashley South

June 18th. Order your tickets and set the

date in your calendar! Get outside and go golfing to help the West Suburban Community Pantry. The event is the big fundraiser of the year for programs aimed at supporting community members with food insecurity. The day is fun in the sun for a good cause. Lisa Spaeth and her team are hard at work with getting the word out to the community about their annual fundraiser coming up this month! Lisa Spaeth, Director of Development the West Suburban Community Pantry, sat down with us to talk about her role at the Pantry, and how we can support the Pantry’s vision of a community without hunger. Lisa has a personal mission to give back and has worked as a fundraiser for various nonprofit organizations since college. She is currently serving a two-year board position on the Naperville Jaycees (member since 2005) and also worked for the Naperville Area Humane Society prior to joining the Pantry. She found her footing with corporate donors

at the Humane Society. Since 2018, she has served in her current position at the Pantry and loves her job. This position requires a bold personality and a frankness of discussion while driving toward goals and targets. Lisa and her two employees are tasked with relationship building, finding new opportunities, writing grants, event planning, and marketing. Some activities they outsource to consultants. Ross Creative shoots their photography and helps with creating marketing material. Catherine Ross, also our creative consultant, connected us with Lisa. In the Community Lisa shares a heartbreaking statistic that 1 of 3 people that need help with food insecurity do not come forward. A lack of childcare, feeling of “someone else needs it more,” or lack of knowledge of nearby programs contributes to the statistic. The Pantry wants to educate people that it is

okay to need more and that they provide many additional services such as helping with SNAP benefits, LIHEAP (home energy program), and a gas card program. Their goal is to find the people in need and take services to them. The Pantry serves about 68,000 people a year. The number breaks down to 5,600 people shopping the pantry a month. They serve all of DuPage County and part of Will County (Bolingbrook and Romeoville). In November of 2018, they started an inschool pantry in Romeoville where 89% of the children are assisted with free or reduced lunches. The Pantry learned of the school’s need through the community and provides the service as part of their regular programming. A Virtual Pantry During the pandemic, the West Suburban Community Pantry had to change the way they serve clients. They also realized that for many clients, the time it takes to shop the pantry with children or even dealing with emotions tied to shopping at the Pantry can create barriers to accessibility. Understanding this, a virtual food pantry was launched. Clients are able log into the website and pick groceries to add to their cart. The Pantry offers different hours and locations for pick up. Everything is free. They currently have five pickup locations throughout Bolingbrook and Romeoville. The Pantry partners with different retail partners like Jewel, Aldi, Costco, Amazon Fresh, Pete’s Fresh Market, and others to get food that they can put out right away. They are provided meat via a partnership

The rest of the needed staples (rice, potatoes, soup, and canned meat) are purchased from the Northern Illinois Food Bank. How to get involved Lisa encourages you to take a first-hand look at the pantry. Her goals are to expand reach, increase awareness, and continue growing the number of clients they can serve. The Pantry offers volunteer opportunities that scale to fit your available time. Come on a weekly basis, come with a business team for one day, come with your family once a month! They welcome everyone and will have a job for you to do such as unloading a truck, sorting food, stocking shelves, and fulfilling virtual food orders. You may also check in customers and do the intake process, help customers shop the pantry, and load carts. Volunteers also drive the trucks to pick up goods from various partners and suppliers.

Home on the Range By Stephanie Anderson

Kitchens are the ‘heart’ of the home. And, a

quality range provides literal warmth to this heart, and as such, it is often the appliance piece people are most willing to invest in. Naturally, kitchen range needs vary per household. Some women I know begin their daily cooking routines at mid-afternoon, putting their blood, sweat, and tears into their meals. In other homes, it may be the husband standing over the flames, while their partner savors a glass of wine. Some may neglect the range during the week but look forward to sharing their weekends and best recipes with family and friends. Whatever your daily dinner routine may consist of, there is a range design for you. When it comes to ranges, there are essentially three main types: Dual Fuel: One of the most sought after ranges available today, these ranges consist of a gas-powered top with an electric-powered oven. Dual fuel ranges are hardworking and available at various price points to meet varying budgets. Gas: One of the more traditional and certainly more cost-effective options, a gas range relies on one energy source to fuel both the stove top and oven. Induction: A unique third option involves ranges with an induction stove top. Providing a clean, modern look to any kitchen, induction ranges rely on a magnetic connection between the stove top and the cookware (e.g., stainless steel), and they provide several advantages relative to gas tops, including cooking time, safety, and cleaning. While range type options are generally limited, range designs can be enormously varied. Below are some of my favorite manufacturers and models in the market today: 24

Main & Luxe, June 2022

The Statement Piece: La Cornue These luxury, handmade ranges from France come in multiple colors and sizes and are sure to be a head turner in any kitchen. La Cornue ranges can be customized to your tastes and needs, and they are instantly recognizable works of art. Consequently, some sticker shock may be understandable depending on your budget, but if you have the dollars to spare, then a La Cornue range is worth every one of them. The One-Stop-Shop: Viking Whether you are buying your first range or are a home chef needing all the bells and whistles, Viking’s series 3, 5, and 7 lines are extremely versatile and come in an array of design choices. Perhaps my favorite of the Viking brand, however, is their Tuscany collection. Offering the sophisticated style of an Italian-inspired range but with the modern technology and service of today’s top ranges, this collection is stunning and powerful. The Classics: Sub Zero (Wolf) and Thermador You cannot have an article about ranges without talking about two of the most classic, professional ranges on the market: Wolf and Thermador. These stainless-steel beauties can meet the needs of any culinary artist, and their performance is never in question. Offering a wide selection of sizes and modern technology; these brands get the job done. From luxury French-style ranges to the iconic Wolf, quality options are boundless when it comes to selecting a range to meet your design needs. The MART (formerly the Merchandise Mart) in Chicago showcases all of these brands and more within their element. Naperville residents who are ready to purchase a range from a local establishment should consider visiting Grand Appliance, which sells Wolf and other range brands not featured here.

50 Years of Title IX By Jeanne Schultz Angel

Growing up in Naperville, I was exposed to

many opportunities to play organized sports. Every brother and sister of mine played either baseball, volleyball, soccer, tennis, or football. In fact, a couple of my sisters played volleyball at the collegiate level. Sports was a natural part of our upbringing and one we did not consider a privilege. As a historian, I look back with immense gratitude because I know it was not long before when girls and women did not have equity in access to team sports or to earn careers in sports. Equal opportunity in athletics was only one of the many benefits that Title IX brought to women and girls. The Education Amendments were passed on June 23, 1972 and included Title IX, a section that prohibited federally funded educational institutions from discriminating against students or employees based on sex: “no person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.” This continues to have a widespread effect on schools across America because any school (from elementary from college) that receives any federal money must provide equitable treatment of the sexes in all areas including athletics. It also includes protection from discrimination in science, engineering, math, and technology classes, pregnancy discrimination, and protections from sexual harassment. To give an idea of the difference Title IX made in women’s sports: in 1972, the number of girls in high school sports was 295,000 and today it is more than 2.6 million. Participation in organized sports is a significant indicator of increased academic success, reinforces positive body image, and bolsters self-esteem. The Naperville Heritage Society collection holds numerous yearbooks for Naperville area high schools. The 1959 yearbook for Naperville High School illustrates the limitations involved 26

in athletics as cheerleading was the only team for girls and women. While cheerleading still plays a vital role in most high school athletic departments, organized competitive sports were almost exclusively male at that time. Looking at the 1980 Naperville Central yearbook, the effect of Title IX is clear: girls and women were provided opportunities to compete in sports gaining the benefits of participation that boys and men had for decades. The most famous athlete in Naperville’s history, Candace Parker, noted the importance of Title IX for girls and women in her family in a 2019 ESPN interview: I’m the first generation in my family that has taken advantage of Title IX. My mom didn’t have that opportunity when she went to school at University of Iowa, they didn’t have basketball athletics for women… I know how important it is, and as a mother, if my daughter chooses to play sports she has the same opportunities as male athletes. Parker led Naperville Central High School to Class AA state championships in 2002 and 2003, Tennessee to two national championships in 2007 and 2008 under the coach (and Title IX pioneer) Pat Summitt, and the LA Sparks to WBNA title in 2016 and the Chicago Sky to

their first title in 2021. Among Parker’s career accomplishments off the court includes being the first woman on the cover of the video game NBA 2K, having a signature shoe by Adidas, and being a studio analyst for NBA on TNT. Parker recently released a documentary entitled “Title IX: 37 Words That Changed America” which features legendary athletes discussing the foundational changes that have occurred for girls and women in athletics and education in the last 50 years. Candace Parker is one of the millions of girls and women whose paths were changed with the passage of this historic legislation.

In contrast to the 1959 yearbook, by 1980, the Naperville Central High School athletic department expanded its girls sports teams to meet the Title IX requirements.

Ideas Worth Sh By Ashley South

Renowned for his ability to coax out interesting

stories, Arthur Zards, the mind behind TEDx Naperville, is a TED talk personified! (TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design.) He is quirky, immensely curious, and speaks quickly. He is a master cultivator of unique experiences, and his mind sparks with new ideas continuously. Arthur’s life has been driven by an openness to new directions and topics. Arthur owns LabZ, an innovation agency. He transforms typically dull conferences into engaging experiences by focusing on the participants’ perspectives. For Arthur, everything is about making people FEEL. The energy radiating from him is infectious. Technology Arthur grew up in a town right outside of Baltimore where lacrosse was the hot sport played in high schools. His dad worked for Amoco Corp and was transferred to Illinois during the middle of Arthur’s junior year. It was 1986; the Bears had just won the Superbowl. But Arthur didn’t fit in with the football crowd. He cared more about his BBS modem and connecting with his friend’s Amiga system (early

computer). During this time, he also started and ran a bulletin board on free speech “America Speaks Out” to discuss politics. His interest in networking via the modem grew so he decided to go to Northern Illinois University to become a programmer but switched to marketing at Benedictine University when the Cobol language proved infuriating. (We know all the tech-heads are nodding in agreement.) One day in 1992, his friend came by and said he wanted to sell connections to the “world wide web,” which was made available to the public in February 1991. Arthur and his friendturned-business partner used their networking knowledge to start a business selling internet access at night while he worked a traditional job during the day. The company had an ethernet cable installed that cost $980 per month! In 1999, they sold the company for stock to a group that went bankrupt shortly after the sale and found themselves left with nothing. Simultaneous to running the company, Arthur also started and led a networking group called Silicon Prairie Social. The group was for technologists in the Chicagoland area to gather, discuss ideas, and aggregate news; there were several technologists in the area that were looking for such a group. It was extremely successful for Arthur. This new networking group furthered his experience with moderating and connecting people. Entertainment The TED conference was conceived by Richard Saul Wurman, who cofounded it with Harry Marks in February 1984; it has been held annually since 1990. Arthur had attended a few in the early 2000s and saw it as a great opportunity for speakers to share their ideas and a way for attendees to discuss thought-provoking and authentic ideas more so than what he observed at traditional conferences. Being an annual and much touted event, TED talks became exclusive and limited by their design. They had only so much time to provide a format for speakers and audiences. In 2009, TED decided to offer an application process to be granted a license to hold an extension of the talks – “x.” Arthur submitted his application the day it opened fearing that other people in Naperville would also jump on the opportunity. He laughed when he told us that he was the only one! Anyone can apply to get a license. Each host must follow the TED landscape specification. The first year, TED had 100 organizers. The Photo left: © Firefly Nights

haring next year, it grew to 300, and 800 after that. TED embraced the movement and the growth of its presence! Design Today, Arthur leverages his years of hosting, his curiosity, and his drive for total experiences to bring TEDx Naperville to life. He develops speakers, carves out the sessions, and contracts with the vendors. The TEDx license stipulates that Arthur cannot pay speakers nor himself, so everything is volunteer based. The annual event has 12 to 15 speakers that Arthur spends upwards of 40 hours directly training. (We provided a checklist for you to consider if you have what it takes to be a speaker or know someone who does!) He looks for juxtapositions or things that have a closeness but evoke a curiosity. Daryl Davis spoke at TEDx Naperville in 2017. Daryl is a black man who received a certificate of friendship from the KKK. He talked about why, he as a black man, attended KKK rallies. His talk has 12 million views. Ideas transcend themselves. Arthur asks “What is the story behind the idea versus the idea itself?” The conference gives a permission slip for people to talk about their everyday and spark conversations and ideas within the audience. He shares that the best speakers are usually those who someone refers as a better speaker than themselves. In down time of the full day, participants do not walk around, they experience sensory delights. Arthur focuses on human-centered designs. One year, he had a virtual reality demo, a lunar landing experience, and media installation for participants to create their own art. It is meant to be immersive and create conversation among the people at the event. “Bump into people and start relationships and friendships,” he says, “When you keep telling people to think creatively and give them permission to do something, ideas worth sharing come out!”

Do you have a TED talk in you? Arthur Zards provides questions to consider: -Does your idea transcend yourself? How does your idea go beyond just “you”? -Is your idea unique, new, or add to an established work in a new way? -Is your idea data-backed, quantifiable, or scientifically founded? -Does your idea challenge standard conceptions? -Does your idea lead to curiosity?
