Olavinlinna Castle
The northernmost medieval castle in the world, the iconic Olavinlinna Castle has for centuries attracted travellers to Savonlinna. The castle is best known as the stage for the world-famous Savonlinna Opera Festival. The castle and its museum are open all year round, and guided tours are organized daily.

Kerimäki Church
The world’s biggest wooden church, the majestic Kerimäki Church, is one of the landmarks of the Savonlinna region. Its construction was completed in 1847, and its spacious interior accommodates over 5,000 people.
Finnish Forest Museum Lusto
Finland’s national forest museum Lusto is located in Punkaharju. Its exhibitions and events offer fascinating things to see and experience all year round. Next to the museum, an arboretum maintained by the Natural Resources Institute displays a remarkable collection of tree species.

The annual Savonlinna Opera Festival in July is one of the most notable international events in Finland. It is organized at the unique stage of the medieval castle Olavinlinna since 1912. Every summer, the festival brings around 60,000 visitors to the castle to enjoy world-class quality opera.
Steamship fleet & Lake Saimaa cruises
Savonlinna is home to Finland’s biggest steamship fleet. Some of these ships that used to carry tar on the waves of Lake Saimaa over 100 years ago are nowadays taking travellers out to enjoy the archipelago scenery. Saimaa ringed seal safaris
Lake Saimaa is known as the home lake of an endangered seal species, the Saimaa ringed seal, norppa. The protection of the species is taken seriously, and in winters, local volunteers plough snow drifts to help seals nest safely. The Saimaa ringed seal has adapted to living underwater and only visits dry land on occasion. The best chance to spot this rare

Hytermä nature reserve
Hytermä nature reserve and museum islands in Kerimäki are one of the most intriguing places to visit in Lake Saimaa. The islands are home to one man’s life’s work; Romu-Heikki’s passions were the conservation of nature and the collection of old artefacts, especially millstones, from which he built multiple impressive monuments and other structures to the islands. Ruoke Holiday Village arranges relaxing beach evenings from Midsummer until the end of August. Their outdoor beach kitchen serves traditional lakefish shoup, blazed salmon, and pit-roasted meat known as Rosvopaisti, “robber’s roast” weekly.

On Thursdays during summer season 15th June-15th August, in bed & breakfast, and farm Lomamokkila you can find out how to make real Finnish pancakes! The children of the house, Anna, Ella and Eero are running their own pancake bar and offering small snacks as well.

Art Cave Retretti
The famous cave of Saimaa Art Cave Retretti will in June begin organizing year-round exhibitions in the cave's experience and exhibition areas, as well as in the above-ground Cultural Park and exhibition spaces. The main exhibition of the year 2022 “The Mystery of the Ice field” takes visitors to the landscapes of the ancient world, to the edge of the story of the earth. The era of mammoths and our ancestors comes to life in the Punkaharju cave by means of modern technology: e.g. through hologram grids and large projections around viewers. The main responsibility for the creative design of the digital area lies with the Helsinki-based virtual studio Zoan Oy. The exhibition also includes a collection of ancient relics found in the Siberian permafrost. The 18 000year- old Dogor, the more than 40 000-year-old frozen cave lion cubs, a large skeleton of a mammoth, and a dozen other permafrost discoveries can

be seen in the cave. Borrowing of the ancient relics is carried out in cooperation with Yakutia’s Academy of Sciences and Severnyi Mir.

At the beginning of the summer, new exhibitions will also open in the Cultural Park and exhibition spaces. ”The Mystery of the Ice field” is open from the beginning of June 2022 to January 2023. The cave exhibition is subject to an entrance fee, the Cultural Park is free of charge. The area is also served by the Cultural Café Mutteri and the Outdoor Restaurant Loimu. The renovation of the concert and restaurant hall will continue at least until the end of 2022. After their completion, Retretti's event activities, as well as private and corporate events, will start in full force. Up to 70 000 to 100 000 visitors are expected to Saimaa Art Cave Retretti in 2022.

The food is fresh, clean and often acquired straight from nature. Numerous restaurants in the region serve delicious food from high-quality ingredients acquired from local farmers and fishermen. One speciality is silvery-sided muikku, an unbelievably tasty and multi use food fish that is caught from local waters. Marketplaces of the region boast a wide selection of berries and mushrooms as well as freshly baked pastries, including traditional delicacies lörtsy and Karelian pie. Lake Saimaa has centuries-old traditions as an important water route from the golden ages of tar-selling to the modern day. In the old days, there could be as many as a couple of hundred steamships carrying tar on the waves of Lake Saimaa. The most legendary of these are the white-hulled steamships, some of which take their passengers out to enjoy the scenery of Lake Saimaa even today. The sound of a ship’s steam whistle while it departs from the harbour is a sure sign that summer has arrived to Savonlinna.
Theme cruises
A scenic cruise in Savonlinna is a wonderful way to spend a summer’s day. Olavinlinna Castle, Pihlajavesi archipelago, the beautiful Kasinonsaari island as well as the many bridges of Savonlinna are just some of the sights on the routes of these cruises. Scenic cruises are available both on steamships and motorboats, and their duration is approximately an hour or an hour and a half. In summer, dozens of cruises depart daily from the passenger harbour at the Savonlinna marketplace, some also from Punkaharju and from Hotel & Spa Resort Järvisydän in Rantasalmi.
Champagne cruises in Linnansaari National Park offer a taste of luxury. It is also possible to get aboard to watch the bonfire on Midsummer’s Eve or the fireworks on July 29th, on St. Olaf’s day, when locals gather to the city centre to celebrate Savonlinna’s birthday. Additionally, there are packages combining a cruise and an opera or a three-course meal in Olavinlinna Castle. The selection of theme cruises varies from year to year.

Many of Lake Saimaa’s towns and cities are connected to each other via waterways. From Savonlinna, ships take passengers to Kuopio, Lappeenranta, Punkaharju, Varkaus, Puumala and Hotel & Spa Resort Järvisydän in Rantasalmi. The beautiful Heinävesi canal route from Savonlinna to Kuopio is one of the national landscapes of Finland.

A cottage, mökki, and a sauna are a perfect pairing that Finns really love. There are over 50,000 cottages in the Lake Saimaa area, most of them on a lakeshore. A cottage without a sauna is a rarity. Heating up in the

sauna is often followed by a cooling dip in the lake. In winter, the plunge is icy cold, since swimming is done through a small hole in the ice of a frozen lake. Ice swimming is a truly refreshing experience! A traditional

after-sauna snack is a grilled sausage. Grilling can be done over a charcoal, a gas grill, wood or even a sauna stove.
The smoke sauna is believed to be the forefather of saunas. A traditional smoke sauna is a one room log hut with an open rock stove and no chimney. When the rocks of the stove are heated, the smoke fills the room. Before the sauna-goers go in, the smoke is let out through the door or a hole in the ceiling. This original type of Finnish sauna can be experienced at Oravanpesät in Sulkava, at Vilpunranta or Sarukka in Savonlinna or at Hotel Varpu in Kerimäki. Most cottages nowadays have a sauna with a wood-heated stove. One such sauna, perfectly suited for a traditional Finnish sauna experience, is located in the beautifully restored log house from the 1920s, Inkeritalo, in Punkaharju. Modern electric saunas are found in city apartments and many hotels. In the sauna of the Original Sokos Hotel Seurahuone, sitting in the heat can be combined with enjoying a view of the wonderful scenery towards the harbour. The Finnish Sauna World at Hotel & Spa Resort Järvisydän in Rantasalmi includes all the best bits of local sauna culture with its many types of saunas. Spahotel Casino in Savonlinna has pools with waterfall massages, a Finnish sauna as well as a Turkish one.

Sauna whisk
The sauna whisk is a significant part of the Finnish sauna culture, especially during Midsummer celebrations. A bunch of birch branches are tied together in a special way, dipped in water and then used for gently whisking the body in order to enhance the effect of the heat. Whisking is believed to prevent inflammation, alleviate muscle and joint pains, improve blood circulation and boost metabolism. The aroma of birch leaves gives a scent of nature to the sauna.

Norppa-Majat is a family business renting private lakeshore villas and cottages. Fully equipped holiday villas are directly on the water with traditional woodheated saunas and barbeque facilities. There’s a lot to do at Norppa-Majat - our own nature trails (3 km and 4,5 km) offer both beautiful lake and forest landscapes.
