Horoscopes Aquarius (Jan. 21-Feb. 18): Contacting your siblings is important. If not by phone then by letter, card, or email. It’s the time to do this no matter how you feel about it. Also, you need to consider education for either yourself or another. And a walk around the neighborhood is a good idea, too. What I’m referring to in all these situations is connections, more information, and a deepening of affection and knowledge about everything. Big and small.
Leo (July 21-Aug. 22): It’s a New Year for you. The Sun will recharge and revive you if you stand in it daily and long enough. You are to radiate yourself like a Sun into all environments. Remember that your tending must be toward yourself. Everyone else comes next.
Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): You feel the need to restore and revitalize Pisces (Feb. 18-March 20): Look at where your important papers
are, review your monetary input and output, make investments if that’s what you do, and consider the value of your work and services. These and all financial situations are to be engaged in seriously. A new state of awareness of how you value yourself is also occurring. Be aware of this for from it your future emerges.
Aries (March 21-April 20): Show off
your leadership qualities, all your drive and your will to do just about anything quickly. You could talk about your projects, too, the new things that interest you. Do make sure you look good, attempt to be efficient, and perhaps you could do with a new pair of shoes. So the foot you put forward is new, too.
Taurus (April 21-May 21): Love seems to have taken on a new intensity. I am not limiting the word love to a present intimacy. It’s the word and experience of love that is being defined for you now, providing an inward change to your existing life’s values. Something you have not been aware of is brought to light. Love is the instrument. A psychological change is the outcome.
Gemini (May 23-June 20): The group is very important but it’s the new group and less of the old. Your ability to bring love to humanity is probably the strongest in the zodiac, except for Pisces. The financial picture will soon shift from nothing to everything. I know this is your hope and wish. Try not being unpredictable. It ruffles you too much.
Cancer (June 21-July 20): The work situation has captured your mind and heart and this will continue. You seek to maintain high ethics and balance everyone’s interests. This is noble. Whereas some will not recognize you, others, in high ranking places will. Especially those Beings in spiritual realms who oversee our lives. To them you are a most important influence. You need this identity to continue.
yourself. This will occur in part if you change your schedule, find new sources of direction, and create a new health and fitness routine. Money and tax matters become great concerns. You’ll need to be resourceful with time because extra professional responsibilities may prove tiresome and tedious. Careful with distractions.
Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Establish tranquility is your work for the month. Especially with loved ones but more so for yourself. There may be changes occurring in whatever environment you’re in. The importance here will be how and what you communicate in order for understanding to occur. The group is more important now than the individual. Try and support the greater good. You won’t get lost. And don’t be critical.
Scorpio
(Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Your everyday ways of being, both personal and professional, probably need even more efficiency, which, last month, I said you could do very well. This Month needs more awareness than usual of how you are helpful to others. Helping others in turn helps you which in turn creates more efficiency. This is the opposite of carelessness which would waste your vital time. And if you’re not helpful, then try to be. You’re very capable at this.
Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 20): Try not to be harsh, withdrawn, and or neglectful of those you encounter daily, especially family, friends, colleagues and all who care for you. It’s possible you’re caught up in financial responsibilities, desire for social activities, and extreme business concerns. You will battle to defend your values. Wear armor.
Capricorn (Dec. 21-Jan. 20): Parents could be a concern or perhaps it’s your parenting that you’re concerned about. Which ever it is, they both need a lot of love. You need to love your parents and tell them so. And you need to know that no matter how you’ve parented, you’ve been doing it with the most love you can bring forth. Now discipline’s another situation entirely. Go slow on that one so as not to disrupt harmony and security of everyone.

It’s no mystery I’m writing this in March. I bring this up only to say that spring has just begun and we have already seen a day in the 90’s. With that, jeans must find a trendy replacement. So pack up your winter shirts and get ready for a hot one. Your standard button up is good on any occasion. There are great brands out there such as Kenneth Cole, Perry Ellis and Polo Ralph Lauren who combine detailed styling with feather-like weight and comfort. Stick with the lighter shaded button ups if you are pairing with white shorts or linen pants. The clean look of white is attractive because it shows detail. Shows you are not clumsy and well put together. White also helps bring out your bronzer shade of complexion. An advantage to the comfortable shorts and button up combo is the diversity to look great wearing sandals or your favorite kicks.

MIM Rocks Fashion A Platform for Top Valley Stylists & Global Brands Written by: Lauren Pfinstag Phoenix Fashion Week introduced MIM Rocks Fashion for the first time in 2011 to immense success. So of course, it was brought back again this year on March 1st to feature the fashions of amazing global designers’ inspired by their own cultures. More importantly, it provided a platform for top valley stylists to show off their skills in bringing the designer’s cultures to life on the runway. Hosted at the beautiful Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix, the evening had a lot to offer guests, from shopping at the pre-party, to sipping bubbly while networking with the fashion forward crowd and taking pictures on the red carpet. Rumor has it the cast of VH1’s Baseball Wives snapped pictures with fans and took in the fashion shows front row, along with many other local celebrities, including Channel 3’s, Brittney Shipp, Miss Arizona USA Erika Frantzve and Miss Arizona USA Teen Alexa Zellers. Even two Los Angeles based fashion bloggers traveled to attend the show! MIM Rocks Fashion Title Sponsor Tanya Marchiol of TEAM Investments Inc. has always been a many year supporter of PHXFW. “I’ve always supported Brian and his vision…PHXFW is a great thing for the city. They are creating high end fashion events in Phoenix, and I know no matter where I live, I will always return back to offer my support.” Obviously, the fashions and styling seen on the runway had much inspiration and influence behind them, from the designer’s culture growing up, to the music and accessories. Whether it was the feminine look of the 1950’s, bohemian flower child of the 70’s or rock n’ roll of the 80’s, nothing said American women’s fashion on the runway better that night than Vintage by Misty. This chic Downtown
Boutique owned and operated by Misty Guerriero, features amazing American vintage fashions, along with some European finds as well. Misty also is a fashionista herself and travels all over the world for unique pieces to fill her shop. Luckily, she has amazing taste, so whether it’s impeccably dressed mannequins greeting you at the window or a dreamy bed piled with accessories, it’s bound to be the most photogenic place to shop in town. ““I’m local”, so I thought it would be very important for me to be involved in MIM Rocks Fashion and Phoenix Fashion Week,” Guerriero said. “There’s a lot of vintage out there, and I wanted to show I’m different.” As you know, one of the main focuses of MIM Rocks Fashion is to provide a platform for talented local stylists. Local stylist Ginger Murphy was paired with Misty, and it appeared to be a perfect fit as soon as the models hit the runway. Ginger, who previously worked as a fashion writer and stylist for The Arizona Republic’s YES department, couldn’t have been more thrilled with PHXFW’s choice to pair her with Misty, as they have known each other for quite some time, having pulled from some of the same sources. With all the trends of USA, it may seem like a daunting task for a stylist to take on. However, it has proved to be a match made in vintage heaven for Ginger and Misty. “USA is so general and
every generation has it’s own style so the theme was hard. We decided to do four different chapters of American style and culture for our MIM fashion show. We focused first on the styles, but we were so excited to hear the positive response for the runway music featuring “The Rolling Stones”,” Murphy said.” As Murphy said, the crowd clearly loved the high energy show, as Ginger and Misty kept the focus on the clothing by styling the models with simple makeup and braids. Another welcomed collaboration that evening was designer Caroline Monick and local stylist Jill Laine, representing France. Caroline journeyed all the way from France to show her collection that Thursday at MIM! Phoenix Fashion Week first heard about Caroline’s amazing designs from local fashion blogger, Sarai Cervantes via Twitter (now that’s putting social media to good use!) and this introduction soon led to Caroline being chosen as one of the four talented global designers to show at MIM Rocks Fashion that night! Caroline created her brand only a year ago, but has been designing clothes since age 10. Whether it’s the elegance or beautiful color palettes, it was clear on the runway that Caroline’s collection was inspired
by the French culture. “ My current collection has 16 silk dresses and 3 scarves. “I brought the elegance of my French culture into my designs. The silk fabric showcases a women’s body and you will see the quality and timeless collection. I also incorporated the feminism and fresh look of women into my dresses”,” Monick said. Representing Mexico was seasoned designer Alma Primero of Coleccion and local stylist Fawn Cheng. For the men, Bounty Hunting clothing was in full force. Bounty Hunter is a brand out of Telluride, Colorado. This year they partnered with local stylist Brian Swan. This bold and trendy brand has expanded to the Biltmore Fashion Park. Be sure to stop into their newly launched boutique! Phoenix Fashion Week has certainly created an annual event to which both local fashionistas and tourists can look forward. It will be exciting to see what brands will be seen in next years show, along with what new talent develops.
Spring Fashion Written by: Richard Baldwin
This spring will be full of bright and vibrant colors. When selecting the swimsuit for you this beach season, be sure to incorporate colors that accentuate your natural tones. Turquoise and your brighter blues are timeless classics. Turquoise is one of those colors that’s flatters all who wear it. Great with the lighter and darker complected.
Sinfully Suited Swimwear Retail: $179.00
The great thing about spring by the pool or on the beach is how simple it is to accessorize. A simple braided bracelet may complete your look and add a look of sophistication. Remember accessories with swimwear are best kept simple. If you try and add too many it may give you a gaudy and tacky look. The beautiful thing about accessorizing your favorite new swimsuit is the cost effectiveness. A bracelet such as the one seen can be found online for as little as a $1.50. What is the difference ...
LED VS. LCD Written by: Richard Baldwin It seems as though every time we turn around, manufacturers have found a new acronym to ignite excitement and confusion in “us” consumers. But, what does it all mean? Why should I buy an LED over an LCD TV? What is the difference? Is there any difference? Well my friend, I share your confusion, therefore I went on a hunt for answers. I called Best Buy, Radio Shack, and even spoke to Samsung and LG. You may be shocked to hear the technical answer to the question, what is the difference between LCD and LED? Ultimately, THERE IS NO MAJOR DIFFERENCE. Technically, an LED TV is an LCD TV or in other words a liquid crystal display. Both LCD and LED refer to the method used in the back lighting of your TV’s
display. An LCD TV refers to the lamps at the back of the screen which are fluorescent lamps. On the other hand an LED TV contains lights at the back of the screen known as Light Emitting Diodes (LED). What does this actually mean? In layman’s terms LED has a better sense of blacker blacks. It uses the light guides to illuminate the center of the screen as well as other areas of the screen, in which LCD does not. With an LED TV individual zones can be brightened or dimmed depending on the users preferance. However, unless you are a tech guru the average eye will not catch these differences. At the stores they will, for sure, have a display ready at its optimum settings next to an LCD TV not at it’s optimum settings. Chances are the average user simply plugs the TV in and doesn’t follow all the guides to set their LED to it’s optimum settings. Although LED TVs use slightly less energy my suggestion would be to save those extra sheckels and go with the LCD. For any real tech gadget the LED is not a bad route.
Survival Gadgets Written by: Richard Baldwin One of the simple joys of Spring is the outdoors. Temperatures are warming up but not up to those hundred degree days as of yet, so for many of us here in the Valley we will be sure to hit Camelback Mountain several more times. Hiking can be dangerous if not done cautiously and with respect to your limits. Water is always a must in these temperatures to avoid dehydration. So as you grab your water bottle remember also to grab this Ultimate Survival water bottle. There are several different kinds of Survival water bottles, all with varying items. This Ultimate Survivor water bottle to the left is a 10 in. bottle. Inside you will find a Carabiner, Multifunction Tool, Multifunction Whistle/Compass, Flashlight, Batteries (2pc), Survival Blanket, Hand Warmer Packet (2), a candle and of course the 32 oz. bottle itself. Price ranges depending on size and contents, however they all seem to be fairly inexpensive. This 10 in survival bottle will run you around twenty dollars. Small price to pay when it could mean your well being!
30 in. Survival water bottle This water bottle is more my style with a 12 in. Survival knife, zip ties, gauze, matches, safety pins and a variety of other contents. The one to the right is around forty dollars. I suggest purchasing your survival bottle in consideration with your climate.
Mainstream readers want to know... How did you get there?
ROBERT “ALEJANDRO” LUCERO We decided to track down a successful businessman and ask him some questions. Q. So tell us who you are, where are you from, and can you give us a glimpse into your upbringing? My name is Robert “Alejandro” Lucero. I am originally from Pueblo Colorado, but currently live in Scottsdale.
28
I come from very humble beginnings. My father passed away when I was twelve. I still remember people telling me when he passed, “You’re going to have to help your mom and be the man of the house.” I took that seriously and I think that was the turning point in my life. I started mowing lawns to make extra money to help at home. I realized I was kind of good at it, so I did small landscape jobs to get me through college. After years of digging trenches by hand, wheel-barrowing rock and good old fashioned physical labor, the determination and hard work started to eventually pay off. I started my own landscaping business in different cities specializing in government contracting, and snow removal. I did some real estate and automotive investing along the way. I came to Arizona 3 years ago to pursue the real estate opportunities and anything else that came my way. Q. How did you get to where you are today? I do not think there is a secret potion to success. I believe if you are honest, ethical and do what you say you’re going to do and have the drive, anyone can do it!! I am living proof. Q. What inspires and motivates you? A client, now a good friend, once told me there are three types of people, those who make things happen those who watch things happen and those who wondered what happened! Q. What do you do in your free time? It took me several years to realize that there is more to life than work.
I have spent my whole life working and planning for the future and, unfortunately, life is not that predicatable. Things change, you can be here today and gone tomorrow. I am just enjoying life and spending as much time as I can with family and friends.
I love to four-wheel! It all started as a hobby, then BAM!!! It turned into a full time job. I have an off-road park in Moab Utah, open to the public with some of the toughest trails in Moab. It’s known as AREA BFE, dont ask what it stands for.
Q. So our female readers would love I love all motorsports, especially to know... Are you single? What type boating. Maybe it has something to of woman are you looking for? do with the attire. HMMMMM is this a trick question!? Q. Have you had any hobbies that Well, I’m an equal opportunist - I do have turned into businesses? not discriminate and yes, I’m single!

iller hooks and soulful lyrics have lured music lovers from all over the world to tune in to Mergence. Originating from Tempe, AZ, these talented musicians create powerful captivating music you just have to hear. Blues, indie, classic rock, all coexisting as one in the passion-, soul-driven fourpiece band Mergence — a band that will not only draw you in, but keep you on your toes and soles, while you sway with every note. To ensure they never outgrow their name, they called themselves Mergence and birthed a unique sound that will only continue to grow, expand and embrace a wide range of musical genres. Influences range from hip-hop and funk to jazz and instrumental, and their diverse backgrounds are seamlessly and intricately melded into the style heard today. Compared to the likes of The Black Keys, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles and Pink Floyd, it is undeniable that Mergence’s distinctive trait is the passion and soul infused in the performance of each track. Mergence’s meditative lyrics are as raw
as its sound, threading themes of life, love, sex and death. Their tracks evoke a strong reaction from their devout, diverse following, from young to old and from all walks of life. With an earthy, catchy sound, Mergence is as real as it gets. Their live shows and performances are an unequivocal match to the quality of their tracks and album — because they’re recorded live, too — packaged into a lustfully smooth sound, collaboratively and effortlessly produced by the band’s diverse members, including vocalist/guitarist/ keyboardist Adam Bruce, Yod on guitar, Brandon Shupe on bass and Jason Roedl rounding out the rhythm section on the drums. Catch their singles on Valley radio station 106.7 KWSS; read about them in virtually every local music zine, including Java Magazine, Phoenix New Times and College Times — all boasting vibrant, rave reviews of both their live performances and debut album, “Those Vibrant Young People are Dead”; or catch them live on their 2012 southwest tour by checking out their website at mergenceband.com.

Bartender Of The Month
Rhianna
I
started belly dancing when I was 18 in Greek restaurants, which progressed to bartending. I’ve been bartending for 10 years on and off. I absolutely love meeting and conversing with people from different walks of life, especially the crazy ones. Working in a bar gives me the unique opportunity to meet every type of person. Of course I’m biased, but I’ve worked in and have been to a lot of bars, and there’s no place that offers such a unique, eclectic environment as the Dogg. It’s nice when going to work feels more like going out with friends great music and great customers! You can obviously tell I love my job.
I love the people I work with and love my customers! Working at the Dogg is unique in that we are a family - my coworkers have become irreplaceable, amazing people in my life - my best friends.
of my work now. I would call my style traditional, sailor with a twist?? Having tattoos comes with some interesting comments. The ones that I hear the most are, “did it hurt?” or “are those real?” (the tattoos - not my boobs ! But I get that question too). The worst comment was from a lady in Starbucks about a year ago. She told me that I was too pretty to ruin myself with tattoos. Back- handed compliment I guess - but it still bothered me. I don’t think everyone should get tattoos and I would never tell someone they would look better with ink. Hopefully someday that lady will give the same respect. We are all beautiful.
As much as I love people, I would have to honestly say that I love animals more. My beautiful dog, Gracie, aka Monkey, is my whole world. She’s the best dog and is number 1 in my life. Do I sound like a crazy dog person?? In my spare time I make hair bows which I named monkey bows after my dog. I started making these bows for myself to save money and people actually liked them. So now monkey bows are being sold at Immortal Art Dislikes: bad breath, bad drivers, I came to work at the Dogg after in Scottsdale! attending a Cardinals game. While at mean people, liars, thieves, little boys the game with some friends, I met I started getting tattoos when I was who wear suits, Lady Gaga, and the Shelley Martin who works at the 16 and like most people, I ended guy who cut me off this morning. Dogg. She immediately swooped up with some bad quality ones. All me up and she’s now become one my tattoos represent a certain time Likes: animals, friends, family, of my best friends. The past three in my life so I don’t regret any of mimosas, pedicures, the rain, my years working at the Dogg have been them, but fortunately I’ve found bed, slip and slide, the beach, the some of the best years of my life! an amazing artist so I can be proud lake, and my job.

Devil's Den Sports Grill
If you find yourself wandering around Mill Ave and are in need of a friendly, sportsthemed environment, look no further than the Devils Den Sports Grill. Housed on the northeastern corner of Mill Ave and University Dr, the concept behind this sports bar was to fill a much-needed void in Downtown Tempe - a sports bar representing ASU Sun Devil pride. This concept was brought to life when we recognized the emergent need for an ASUthemed sports bar in Tempe. As a part of the ASU alumni, we created a team-oriented setting for Tempe customers, ASU students and other sports fans so that they could enjoy sports of all nature, to include, of course, the Sun Devils. This prime sports bar features ASU sport broadcasts, memorabilia of famous alumni showcased on the wall, and an overall hometown feel. Who wouldn’t welcome the experience of sports, food and drinks, and exceptional service?

Mainstream loves your music and we want everyone else to get a chance to get to know you! Q. How did you get started? I started playing the piano by ear at 4 years old. I went to my grandma’s house after church one day and started playing one of the worship songs I just heard. My mom was so floored that (despite not having a lot of money), she took out a loan to buy me a piano! I started singing in church and eventually branched out singing in nightclubs when I was 23. Q. Have you always enjoyed the art of music? Always! I started writing songs when I was 7 years old and I haven’t stopped. I would put on “concerts” for my Barbie dolls back then and pretend I was singing in a huge arena, with a perfume bottle as my microphone. My mom had a home daycare when I was growing up. I would write songs and choreograph dance moves to them, teach them to the daycare kids and then video tape us performing them. It was pretty hilarious.

Q. Any loves, other than music? Definitely my family. I have the most gorgeous, loving husband and the sweetest little daughter. They are my world. Pizza is definitely my other love. I could eat that every day for the rest of my life and I would be happy. In fact, I practically do eat it every day! Q. Was there anyone in particular who encouraged your love of music? My mother. She believed in me so much and was always there supporting every decision I would make in my music career. I’ve always had the desire to be on stage. It’s strange but I usually am a pretty awkward person who is uncomfortable in her own skin. But the moment I step on stage and start singing or playing the piano, that completely melts away. I feel transformed into a confident, beautiful person who can take on anything with ease. Q. Do you come from a musical family? Actually, not really. My dad plays a little guitar, but that’s it. He gave me one of his acoustic guitars when I was about 16 and I started teaching myself to play. It’s definitely a hard instrument to master, but it is one of my favorites.
Q. Can you describe your music style to our readers who haven’t had the pleasure of hearing it yet? With my 1st album “Elegant Mess”, we created music that married some of the retro sounds and arrangements quintessential to northern soul and funk with an updated, modern pop sensibility. I’m currently working on my next album, determined to only get better and better. I was told by one of my favorite singers, George Benson, that I have the same quality of voice as Christina Aguilera. That was probably one the greatest compliments anyone has ever given me. Q. Who is your favorite musician? I love the writing styles of Jason Mraz and Alicia Keys, both incredibly talented artists who have greatly inspired me. I had the honor of being able to sing with Jason Mraz a few years back which was very surreal. I’ve also performed with Gene Simmons from Kiss on his reality show, Gene Simmons Family Jewels. Lloyd is also a great singer and dancer. We performed together on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno and had the best time! Q. What was the first song you ever performed? That’s hard to say because I performed all the time as a kid in church. But the first time performing professionally was at a charity Christmas party for the McKenna Youth Foundation. I was there as a guest and friends wanted me to go on stage to sing a song with the band. The band however did not want me up there. Until they were offered a $100 bill by the host! I sang (and don’t laugh!) “Dontcha Wish Your Girlfriend Was Hot Like Me” and the band insisted I perform with them every weekend.
And that is where I got my first professional singing gig at Eli’s in North Scottsdale. Q. What’s your one weakness? I tend to get caught up in the moment too much. I end up oversinging and push myself too hard sometimes. Q. Do you have any hidden talents? I can do impersonations pretty well. Especially characters from Family Guy! Q. What’s the best advice ever given to you? Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart. Psalm 37:4. I used to live a crazy, dangerous life apart from God. I should’ve been dead a long time ago. But the minute I decided to stop running away and turn to Him, He has blessed me more abundantly than I could have ever imagined. Q.Where can we see you live or here in AZ? What’s the name of your website? I perform every Sunday, Monday and Tuesday at Maestro’s Steakhouse on Pinnacle Peak and Pima at 6:30pm with an incredibly talented singer/pianist , Joe Shank. We bring comedy and class to the table with our all request show. Joe and I are also available for weddings and private parties with our full band.
