Guide

Our community has grown so much together over the last year. With your help, we continue to serve the Czech Village-New Bohemia Main Street District by providing the vision for a successful future. Our organization helps leverage grants and other resources with private investment to make a big impact. We assist in bringing new businesses to our community, creating new jobs for our workforce. But it goes beyond just getting them here; we help create an environment for success. Whether it is driving traffic to their door through marketing and events, providing resources for growth such as a revolving loan fund, or holding networking events to spark collaboration, Main Street is a catalyst for change.

We have prepared this Holiday Guide to help walk you through the fantastic events coming up this season, to share a few stories of the rich culture and history that make up this community, and maybe even to give you some shopping ideas or introduce you to a few new small businesses. Enjoy - iuhiugiugigigig

African american

museum of iowa

The African American Museum of Iowa is celebrating the holiday season with a small exhibit looking at a few of the holiday traditions that African Americans have participated in such as; Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa and Jonkonnu, African American tradition from the 1800s. Items representing these holiday traditions will be on display in our lobby exhibit case, which will be on display until 1/2/2018. On December 2nd, the museum will host holiday craft tables for children to learn about these four holiday celebrations and their connection to the African American community from 11am-3pm. Mrs. Claus will be reading stories and greeting visitors from 11am-1pm. Two of these crafts will teach visitors about both older and more current traditions celebrated by African Americans in the United States. The first of these is a tradition from the 1800s called Jonkonnu, also called John Coonering, was one that blended West African tradition and adornment with holiday traditions such as Christmas caroling. During these celebrations there would also be dancing, costumes, masks, plays, and more. Kwanzaa is modeled after traditional African harvest festivals and celebrated in the seven days between Christmas and New Year’s Day. The primary focus of the holiday celebrates the Nguzo Saba, or seven principles: Unity, SelfDetermination, Collective Work and Responsibility, Cooperative Economics, Purpose, Creativity, and Faith.

"If Objects Could Talk” offers a glimpse of the Museum’s collection of thousands of objects, documents, and photographs. Each item tells a unique story about African American history, communities, and culture in Iowa.

HOliday

Decor

Think outside the usual green and red decor. Use natural, hand woven runners in neutral colors or indigo. Pair with woods for a warm, earthy look or hand made ceramics from Tunisia to add global appeal to your table. Keep it simple by using quality, hand made accessories. Wood serving pieces soften and warm a table, especially when you add natural greens to the setting. Possibilities are limited only by a person’s imagination and willingness to try out new combinations of natural and hand made tableware. Fair Trade Table Runner Handmade Cutting Board Village Table

recipe

Greek Basil & Garlic infused olive oil found at Pickle Creek 1 9-inch pie crust pressed into 9-in. pie pan ¼ c. red onion, diced 1/2 red bell pepper, diced 1/2 green bell pepper, diced 2 cloves garlic, minced 12-15 mushrooms, diced (try baby portabellas) 1/4 lb smoked deli ham, sliced 1/4 lb Swiss cheese, cubed 5 eggs 1/2 c cream Salt & pepper

Ah-Mah-Zing Quiche

by Jocelyn at Pickle Creek Herbs

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. To a large skillet heating over medium-high heat, add 2-3 Tbsp infused olive oil (enough to coat the bottom of the pan and then a little bit more). Add the onion and bell pepper and sauté until softened slightly (3-5 minutes). Add garlic and mushrooms. Season with salt and pepper and continue to sauté another 5-7 minutes, until vegetables are tender. Add the ham to the pie crust, spreading evenly across the bottom. Spoon in the vegetables over the ham, and then spread the cubed cheese evenly across the vegetables. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs and cream, about 1 tsp salt, and ½ tsp pepper. Pour over the ham, vegetables, and cheese and bake at 350 degrees for 40 minutes. Let the quiche sit for 15 minutes to finish firming up before serving. Enjoy!
