Main Street is a catalyst for change. With your help, we continue to serve the Czech Village-New Bohemia Main Street District by providing the vision for a successful future. Our organization helps leverage grants and other resources with private investment to make a big impact. We assist in bringing new businesses to our community, creating new jobs for our workforce. But it goes beyond just getting them here; we help create an environment for success. Whether it is driving traffic to their door through marketing and events, providing resources for growth such as a revolving loan fund, or holding networking events to spark collaboration. We are here, behind the scenes helping grow and promote this Main Street District in the heart of Cedar Rapids. We have prepared this Holiday Guide to help walk you through the fantastic events coming up this season, to share a few stories of the rich culture and history that make up this community, and maybe even to give you some gift ideas or introduce you to a few new small businesses to help you shop local.

Anne’s holiday decorating tip from Moss: “You can’t go wrong with a metallic color palette: gold, silver, copper and bronze add warmth and festive sparkle that will last through the holidays and into the new year. Weave these colors into your decor with ribbon, mercury glass candles, ornaments and crushed glass. Spray pinecones with metallic spray paint for a more natural look.”

13 COMMUNITIES RECEIVE NEARLY $1 MILLION IN MAIN STREET IOWA CHALLENGE GRANTS Projects will leverage private investments to revitalize downtowns across the state November 8, 2018 (DES MOINES, IOWA) The Iowa Economic Development Authority (IEDA) today awarded Czech Village – New Bohemia Main Street District a $60,000 grant for the Czech Cottage Rehabilitation. Bob Schaffer, Jennifer Pruden, and Chris Wand represented the Czech Village – New Bohemia Main Street District at the event. Twelve other Main Street Iowa communities also received grants. The extensive restoration of the Czech Cottage, a major gateway building into the Czech Village neighborhood, will dramatically improve the physical appearance of a key contributing historic structure. Several later, non-historic modifications will be removed and replaced with historically appropriate materials. In addition, a secondstory apartment unit will be dramatically renovated to meet the current needs of the high-demand urban housing market in Cedar Rapids. “The Main Street Iowa Challenge grants have proven to be catalysts for the revitalization of Iowa’s historic main streets,” said IEDA Director Debi Durham. “These projects demonstrate the ongoing commitment the people of our state have to keeping our downtowns vibrant, which helps attract new visitors, residents and businesses.” The grants are administered through IEDA’s Iowa Downtown Resource Center and Main Street Iowa programs. The funding will be distributed in the form of matching grants to the selected Main Street programs. The estimated total project cost of these 13 projects is over $8.7 million.“Each project must provide at least a dollar-for-dollar cash-match,” said Michael Wagler, state coordinator for the Main Street Iowa program. “In total, these projects will actually leverage more than nine times the state’s investment into bricks and mortar rehabilitation that will have a significant economic impact within each district.” The Challenge Grant program is funded through an appropriation from the Iowa Legislature. Since the first appropriation in 2002, approximately $9.6 million in state and federal funds have leveraged more than $57 million in private investment. Over the life of the program, 165 projects in 53 Main Street Iowa commercial districts across the state have received funding.

BOHEMIAN GROCER OFFERS SLEW OF LOCALLY-SOURCED PRODUCTS Steven Prochaska, owner of the Sausage Foundry, has long seen a gap in the offerings at Cedar Rapids’ NewBo City Market. Now, with the opening of Bohemian Grocer in a space adjacent to his current shop, he hopes to fill it, offering visitors a place to buy the locally-sourced produce, dairy and dry goods one would expect in a bustling marketplace. “People really love local foods and no one else in the market was providing fresh produce and local dairy,” said Mr. Prochaska, who opened Bohemian Grocer with the help of a loan from the Eastern Iowa Council of Governments and Cedar Rapids Main Street. “People come to NewBo expecting what you would find at a farmers’ market, but there was nothing available consistently during market hours.” Bohemian Grocer, which had a soft opening last month, will celebrate its grand opening this weekend offering produce from Jupiter Ridge and Bass farms, dairy from Kalona Supernatural, Dan & Debbie’s Creamery and Country View Dairy, and a slew of other local products from Urban Greens salad mixes and Old Capitol Tofu to 19 types of kimchi and sauerkraut from Agri-Cultured in Waukee. The shop will also feature Frontier Herbs and products, baking mixes from Wildwood Farms and four types of Bloody Mary mix from Iowa City-based Hair of the Dawg. “I’m currently at 95 percent Iowa products,” Mr. Prochaska said, adding he hopes to bring that number up even higher in the weeks and months ahead. “I’ve been in business with the Sausage Foundry for three years and have always wanted to carry Iowa products. People really love local foods and there is no one else in the market bringing them all together.” Mr. Prochaska said he hopes to prove his idea is viable and eventually open a standalone location elsewhere in the NewBo area. “I could really expand into deli and beer and wine,” he said. “But that’s at least several years out and it all depends on how the NewBo area continues to develop.” Article from CBJ
