here are gorillas on the loose in Toledo, OH. Not real ones, of course, but the ones depicted on jan/san distributor Silverback Supply’s trucks. While the big gorillas on its vehicles are certainly eye-catching, there is more to the concept, including the company’s name, than just designing something to attract attention. Silverback is the name given to adult male gorillas, because of the silvery fur running across their backs and hips. The company’s logo contains the phrase, “Sustainable cleaning solutions,” which offers a window into the underpinnings of the big gorilla philosophy, as explained by Silverback President/Founder Dan Carr, during a recent interview with Maintenance Sales News, at the distributorship’s offices and warehouse in Toledo. “The alpha male silverback gorilla is the closest thing to humans on this earth, as 98 percent of its DNA is the same as ours,” Dan Carr said. “We have the gorillas on the endangered species list. It’s our fault. There are several factors as to why these animals are in danger, including deforestation, they don’t reproduce well in captivity and they only live in certain parts of the world.” According to www.tropical-rainforest-facts.com, there are roughly 700 silverbacks left in existence today, which reflects what humans have done to the population. “Efforts to protect the habitat of the gorillas are a reminder of where the jan/san industry is heading in the area of whole sustainable cleaning solutions,” Dan Carr said. “Furthermore, and just as powerful, the gorilla is a very docile, very strong image, which is what we want as a company. “At first, I thought the concept might be a little crazy, but it is working. The name ‘Silverback’ is easy to remember. Our name and logo have been nothing but successful.”

YOUNG COMPANY LED BY SEASONED PROFESSIONALS
ounded just seven years ago, Silverback Supply is a very young company in the jan/san segment. However, Dan Carr and General Manager Curt Hitchner combined have nearly four decades of experience in the field. Dan Carr worked as vice president of sales for 22 years at a company that offers chemical and equipment solutions to the jan/san marketplace. Hitchner also worked for the same company for 15 years. “In founding the company, I would like to say I went out and spoke to the brightest minds or had a voice whisper to me, ‘Build it and they will come,’ but, in reality, it was just a matter of timing,” Dan Carr said. “There was a very small company representing lines on one side, but also distributing product on the other, which was becoming a conflict of interest. I purchased the distribution side, which came with one seasoned sales guy. “I called a couple of people I knew in the industry who had recently retired. I convinced them to come out of retirement and just go call on their friends. We also had one warehouse employee who made deliveries, handled invoicing, etc.

Silverback’s office and warehouse is designed as a place customers can receive training, as well as shop for supplies.
A large silverback gorilla makes the company’s delivery trucks instantly recognizable.
“The market was changing and there was a need for another local distributor to provide a high level of service.” Hitchner added: “Dan and I both came from a chemical background, but we also had the opportunity to spend a lot of time traveling the country, working with distributors. We saw all the good and the bad that is out there in the marketplace. “Part of how we have been able to build the company, and build it quickly, has been incorporating the knowledge and relationships we have gained in our travels into our vision of what the business should be. We now have about 15-plus people involved in the company.” Silverback Supply is a full-service janitorial supply company, distributing traditional major brands, as well as new products coming into the marketplace. Among its services are equipment repair and third-shift training. The company is also able to arrange customer outings, business meetings — whatever is needed for its client base.
panies are either going out of business or consolidating, and it is also happening in many other industries.” Part of the problem, Dan Carr explained, has to do with companies not being able to stay ahead of margin suppression in today’s marketplace. “Historically, the jan/san distribution market was used to higher margins,” Dan Carr said. “When a company makes certain margins for a long time, and now is in the second or third generation, there is an assumption that they are going to continue at that pace. “What has happened many times is distributors also had a lot of built-in legacy costs. Once margin suppression started happening, they couldn’t cut costs quickly enough, and they began losing money. This is the same scenario that is causing some of the large national retailers to close stores by the hundreds. They are struggling because of the cost of past business practices. This is the same challenge facing traditional distributors and manufacturers. Some will be able to adapt, and some won’t.” Legacy costs, as defined by an online financial dictionary, are “the financial expenses of supporting retiree benefits, including pensions, healthcare, and insurance.” “We realized when we got involved there were a bunch of things we had to do,” Dan Carr said. “We had to live on lower margins. Commensurate with that, we kept our costs in line. We were still able to make money immediately with lower margins because we didn’t have legacy costs.” Hitchner added: “Business has been and will, hopefully, continue to be very good. We are growing within our current accounts and adding new ones. We realize that there are market changes that we cannot control, but they just provide us with more opportunity.” Starting out, Dan Carr also saw opportunity in the fact that two of Silverback’s largest competitors are now owned by companies based in Silverback staff members gather for the company’s annual Christmas party. “Some companies will sell something to a customer, go over it, and then kind of disappear. In contrast, we are constantly following up, training and making sure they are happy.â€? Silverback’s customer service approach involves thinking in the long-term, rather than forcing products onto customers that might result in a higher commission for a sales rep in the short-term, Kevin Carr said. Another plus in being a newer company, Hitchner said, is Silverback’s “fresh approachâ€? to doing business. “We’ve been able to get into accounts because they are sick of dealing with the same old approach,â€? Hitchner said. “Once we gain customers, we are able to retain them, because of our very hands-on customer service. We bring new ideas and solutions that can truly benefit whatever issues the customer is having. “At the end of the day, a number of things we sell are commodities, so the only way to get new accounts and keep them is to show we offer so much more than just the products themselves.â€?
Hitchner said Silverback’s reputation for stellar customer service has also resulted in referrals that have translated into a significant amount of business. “Customers will talk about us negatively or positively, so we make sure we do everything in our power to have it be a positive conversation,â€? Hitchner said. Silverback’s highly-trained sales reps are adept at analyzing and advising about what products, services and procedures make the best sense for individual customers. “Customers are looking for help. If you have a good relationship with them, they are going to want your help,â€? Hitchner said. “We are considered the experts. In the transition of personnel these days, there are so many people coming into positions with little or no experience, and they need guidance. They appreciate the help, and that is part of what we provide.â€? Silverback also has a number of customers that it helps manage inventory. For these customers, par levels are set for weekly or monthly orders. When it comes to customers’ ordering habits, Hitchner said 80 percent of the orders Silverback receives are made online or are faxed. As a result, the company has fewer inside sales people than most traditional distributorships. This allows the sales force to be out in the street taking care of customers face-to-face. “For the most part, we are not sitting here taking orders,â€? he said. “Our reps are in front of customers helping them to be successful. That is the reality of how we are doing business these days. “We have a robust web-based system for everything from order entry to warehousing. We must and will continue to look at ways technology can help our business. We are of a size where we can move quickly and be nimble enough to make adjustments and changes, whether it be for the customer or for Silverback, Airx Spray N Go Disinfectant Cleaner so that we get the results we need. “Most of our customers go to our website to place orders. This allows us to conduct training on maintaining the various floor types with the equipment we sell. Clients can come here and run equipment, as well as finding the supplies they need. “We don’t have a formal schedule for training, whether at the customer’s facility or here. It is really on a need basis.” Dan Carr added: “We help people clean buildings, making for a safer environment. Many times, people we work with are doing their jobs during hours the rest of us are sleeping.” Modern-day floor equipment has the potential to reduce labor costs by doing the job more efficiently, more quickly and with fewer people. SILVERBACK FOSTERS A TEAM CULTURE

people who comprise the distributorship’s “team.” Indeed, the “team” concept is one Silverback’s leadership robustly promotes. “Silverback is a team. We are fortunate to have phenomenal people as teammates here,” Dan Carr said. “We have veteran salespeople who have been at it for 40 years, and, in some cases, 45 years. One of our equipment repair techs has over 30 years in the industry, and another equipment repair guy is a retired fireman, who loves to fix things. Our warehouse manager has 25 years of experience.” Silverback also has some millennials on its staff, including Kevin Carr. Dan Carr said the older and younger generations, “Work exceptionally well together.” When it comes to being a good teammate, Dan Carr said, “We have hundreds of years of knowledge here. However, if you have all that and you live in a silo and you are selfish and don’t want to help other people, you are not going to get anywhere.” One event at Silverback to promote the team culture is “The Big Gorilla” award presented at the company’s annual Christmas Party. “The ‘Big Gorilla’ is selected by his/her peers in a company-wide vote. It is not just a sales award,” Dan Carr said. As stated on the website, www.silverback-supply.com, “‘The Big Gorilla’ award is based on the recipients dedication to job performance, hard work, and helping other team members. The winners receive a custom plaque, their name on ‘The Big Gorilla’ board in the office, a cash prize, and, of course, bragging rights for the entire year.” “We make a big deal out of it at the Christmas party,” Dan Carr said. “It is all about a team — the synergy of 15 staff members making it as strong as 20 people, with no finger-pointing at the end.” At the company’s recent 2018 Christmas party, the vote for “The Big Gorilla” was a tie. “The Big Co-Rillas,” as the company calls them, were Warehouse/Distribution Manager Jay Sulier and Purchasing Coordinator Jamie O’Connor. “As Dan said, we have a positive environment for our teammates,” Hitchner said. “We enjoy working with our customers, and we want them to enjoy working with Silverback. If that is not the case, there are other customers out there. We are picky about the fact that we want to develop relationships, not just sell stuff.” Dan Carr added: “As you go through each department in this company, you are going to find people who just get it, and are very good at their jobs.

I know we would be successful.”
S
SUSTAINABLE CLEANING SOLUTIONS
ilverback’s logo contains the phrase “sustainable cleaning solutions.” As was mentioned before, the company’s name is tied into the idea of sustaining the silverback gorilla population and habitat. “We went to market in the beginning, again, as the ‘gorilla,’ representing sustainable cleaning,” Hitchner said. “We have had buyers and customers coming here looking for a mop bucket and a wringer. We don’t sell very many mop buckets and wringers. We sell microfiber. We sell sustainable cleaning solutions. “Here in the Midwest, sustainability isn’t driven as much as it is on the East Coast or the West Coast, but it is still a factor. The good thing is most of these products have all come around to a performance level, so that we don’t have to make excuses for selling green. “We have gone to market with green products and systems from day one and our customers are appreciative. We don’t have to worry about customers’ safety from that standpoint. When you talk about microfiber cleaning, it is about reducing worker fatigue and better performance. That is how we approach our customer base, and it is working.”
W
SOME INDUSTRY TRENDS
hen asked what he sees as trends in the jan/san industry, Dan Carr listed the following: consolidation; national accounts; excess capacity (where do you sell it?); reduced labor costs; big box stores and online retailers selling janitorial supplies; tariffs; automation of everything (scrubbers, trucks, etc.); and margin erosion. “This is a list of facts. They are not positive or negative. We just need to make sure we acknowledge them and plan accordingly,” Dan Carr said. “We need to make sure our customers are buying predominantly because of Silverback’s service. That is all that we can control. “The big boxes, national accounts and online retailers, such as Amazon, are not going away. Trends are fine. If we didn’t have change, we would all be doing the same things over and over again. “These people are going to lop off some of the business, but they still won’t be able to service customers the way we do at Silverback.” Indeed, one of the priorities Dan Carr and Hitchner listed as Silverback moves forward is “Get great at the things the big box players can’t do.” Other priorities include: continue to find and retain great people; service the customer better than anyone else; search for differentiated product lines and solutions; think long-term and only offer solutions that truly fit the customer; and don’t think about the short-term for the quick dollars. “We are a very growth-oriented company in terms

of how far we have come in a short time frame,” Hitchner said. “We want to continue on that path, making sure we are servicing the customer.” WHEN THE BIG GORILLA HITS THE ROAD
very large silverback gorilla adorns the company’s box trucks, which are hard to miss as they travel down the road making deliveries. “Our delivery practices are probably a little different than most distributors, even those of our size,” Hitchner said. “Everyone in the company helps. There are many times when customers need an emergency order for a variety of reasons, and we respond. We all deliver product with our personal vehicles to help out customers and to enable our truck drivers to focus on larger core deliveries. “We have scheduled delivery routes. Locally we turn orders in one or two days. The outlying areas have their own schedule. We have different sized trucks to accommodate, whether it be smaller orders or pallet-size deliveries. I have never heard a complaint that we are slow with deliveries.” Silverback’s delivery drivers wear T-shirts and jackets with the company’s logo. As is the case with many distributors, the drivers are some of the most visible employees to customers. “Drivers are important representatives of the company. As such, we are very careful about the folks that we select for that position,” Hitchner said. “They are an integral part of the team. They all communicate with our sales reps. Fran Pitzen, “If a customer has a question or a problem, drivcustomer service/AR ers will communicate with a sales rep to resolve the issue on-site. They are helpful if they see something or know something within an account that needs attention. “The low unemployment rate makes it even more challenging to find the right individuals to fill that position.” Winters in northern Ohio can be challenging, but, fortunately, part of Silverback’s warehouse is heated. “We are able to pull our trucks inside, keeping them warm and clean,” Hitchner said. Dan Carr added: “We have three docks and we recently heated another 6,000 square feet of the warehouse. Currently, about 3/4 of it is heated.” The company has 40,000 square feet of warehouse space, which is enough to accommodate future growth. “We keep track of inventory through our software,” Jamie O’Connor, Hitchner said. “The biggest thing that Dan and I idenpurchasing coordinator tified when we got into this distribution channel is we had to turn inventory. Volume that comes in doesn’t sit here long. We turn it quickly. We are above industry averages, for sure. It is due to our relationships with the suppliers we select that helps us make sure what comes in goes back out in a short time frame.” In addition to Silverback’s delivery vehicles hitting the road, the company’s equipment repair techs also travel to customers’ facilities to service equipment. Hitchner pointed out that there is more modernday automated equipment purchased than ever before. Silverback will service all brands. “There is more equipment that is being relied upon, which means there is more to be repaired,” Hitchner said. “We know from traveling the country and talking with other distributors the importance of providing local equipment service. Our customers need the service and it affords us the opportunity to confidently sell Jay Sulier, equipment that we can back up when the need arises. warehouse manager
“There is a shortage of good local service and we fulfill that need. As we grew, and as soon as we had the customer base, we were able to move from outsourcing repairs to adding in-house staff to provide outstanding equipment service and repair.” Silverback also offers preventive maintenance programs for customers’ machinery, as well as its laundry and warewash equipment.
L
they do, then we will just be another ‘me too’ company. “We have the ability to be flexible. We have the warehouse, the trucks and the people, so we can really sell anything we want.”
THOUGHTS ON THE FUTURE
ooking ahead Dan Carr, Hitchner and Kevin Carr offered their thoughts on the future of Silverback and the market it serves. “I think we can be whatever we want to be and we can be as successful as we want to be,” Dan Carr said. “We just need to start getting involved in other things, such as looking at the industrial side of the market. There are still plenty of opportunities.” Dan Carr cautioned about chasing business that doesn’t fit well with the company’s goals. “We don’t need to be taking a truck and deadheading three or four hours in one direction to service a customer,” he said. “If we really pay attention and take care of our own backyard, no one is going to be able to take our business. “I want to get up everyday and I want to enjoy what I do and be around great people. I’m at the tail end of my career. We have some young people at Silverback whose careers are ahead of them.” Hitchner is confident Silverback will continue to grow. “We have a great customer base and we get many referrals,” Hitchner said. “We do a great job maintaining our current customers. We can grow organically within our current customer base and in our market without really reaching out too far. I think that is the immediate future for us. We can do a lot of different things because we have the capability and the assets.” Kevin Carr said one key to competing in today’s marketplace is to pay attention to what the competition is doing, such as big box stores and online retailers. “We may not have the buying power of the Amazons of the world, but they have a different value proposition. Some customers may purchase some items from them that are strictly commodities, and they will be tough to beat at that game. We can provide value and solutions they can’t, and we can compete at that level to win,” he said. “When it comes to companies that are more direct competitors, if we do the things

The United Group (TUG) Connects 400-Plus Members With Nearly 200 Preferred Suppliers
he United Group® (TUG) is a 100 percent Member-owned, nationwide sales and marketing group for independent B2B and B2G distributors across the United States. Founded in 1983, and headquartered in West Monroe, LA, TUG connects 400-plus Members with nearly 200 Preferred Suppliers, including major national and regional manufacturers and redistributors. The United Group is dedicated to promoting strong relationships among Members and Suppliers for increased sales and enhanced profitability for all.
STRENGTH IN NUMBERS Joining a buying group like TUG can help increase purchasing power for independent distributors. It can be tough to compete against the large chains, and many of our distributors find that manufacturers are more accommodating for a group member than they might otherwise be for an unaffiliated company. We also encourage our Members to work cooperatively through TUG’s secure website to find solutions and move product member to member. The United Group charges no application fees or membership dues, and every Member owns a single and equal share of the group. All Members are encouraged to increase their involvement through participation on committees, the board of directors, task forces and at the annual stockholder meeting. Member Stockholders network with one another at regional meetings and with Preferred Suppliers at TUG’s annual Conference, helping to cement long-lasting business and personal relationships.
MOTIVATED TO CONNECT The United Group seeks to serve Suppliers as fully as our Members, giving them the tools they need to be successful. We work with our Suppliers to market their products to Members and create more sales opportunities. TUG charges no fees to become a Preferred Supplier, and we offer many free and paid marketing opportunities. As a Preferred Supplier, your company gains instant national coverage, and our Membership becomes your distribution network. We want to help you to both gain new customers, and grow sales to existing accounts. Suppliers are free to discuss rebate programs without exception and are afforded quality, one-on-one meeting time with Members at TUG’s annual Conference. Our Supplier partners have become some of our best advocates and often recommend The United Group to their customers.
OUR MARKETS TUG is focused on four market segments: Janitorial/Sanitary, Foodservice, Industrial Packaging and Safety products and equipment. Our executive staff negotiates with Suppliers for the best possible rebate programs, and TUG makes contract details available on a 24/7 basis to every Member. We conduct annual reviews with our top Suppliers to maximize value for all stakeholders, and we consistently strive to facilitate Member-Supplier collab-
oration. Our full-time Growth Rebate Auditor communicates with, and assists Members in meeting targeted rebate goals, and our Marketing Allowance Auditor helps resolve discrepancies and clarify rebate terms for Members. Working through Member committees, TUG verifies potential Suppliers for industry longevity, proven success, relevance, quality, special attributes, and breadth of product lines before presenting them to the membership. A number of Suppliers offer volume discounts in addition to contract and growth rebates on purchases.
The United Group is dedicated to promoting strong relationships among Members and Suppliers for increased sales and enhanced profitability for all.
We also offer private label products exclusively through our Supplier partners, including TUG-branded tape, towel and tissue lines.
BENEFITS OF MEMBERSHIP TUG’s user-friendly website (www.unitedgroup.com) provides Members with information on solutions to shared business concerns, vendor product and system sales flyers, product training and testimonial videos, news releases, and promotional specials. The website also features a secure, password-protected portal where Members can easily check their rebate earnings, exchange information and business strategies, and publish requests to collaborate on national accounts. TUG’s professional quarterly news and marketing magazine, United Connects, features industry news, product news, Member and Supplier company profiles and other articles of special interest to group stakeholders. TUG publishes news items free of charge for all Member Stockholders and Preferred Suppliers. The magazine is mailed to every Member and Supplier company, posted on TUG’s website and distributed to prospects. Preferred Suppliers can also increase brand awareness and grow sales by supporting United Connects with paid print advertising.

ONWARD AND UPWARD In 2018, The United Group continued its steady growth, adding 9 new distributor Members and 9 new industry Suppliers to its rosters, and announcing a new reciprocal partnership with TriMega Purchasing Association in June. TUG’s annual Conference was held in Anaheim, CA, April 30 through May 3, featuring a busy schedule for attendees with plenty of opportunities to do business, have fun and make new industry connections. TUG’s Member-established GSA contract program continues to attract new participants and provide increased sales opportunities for Members. TUG’s 2017 incentive travel program, TUG Treks, concluded another successful year with a week-long getaway at the Grand Wailea Waldorf Astoria Resort, in Maui, HI, for over 155 individual Members and Suppliers in September 2018. TUG continues to improve its singular, proprietary Conference software, which allows Members to choose which Suppliers to meet with during tabletop sessions, and rank them in order of priority before the system generates their schedules. Suppliers can use the system to view their own meetings, search Member schedules for openings, and contact Members directly with meeting requests. The system has received positive reviews from attendees who find it easy to use during the Conference. Since 2014, we have utilized our own app (The United Group app), which allows Conference attendees to view their full event and meeting schedules, exchange contact details with each other, access resort maps of session and event locations, find information about Suppliers, review show specials, and more. In 2019, TUG’s National Conference will be held April 10-13 at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center, in National Harbor, MD, and promises to be another fun and worthwhile event where relationships are forged and strengthened. Our 2019 Conference will include Member/Supplier tabletop meetings, an evening Washington, D.C. monument tour for Members and guests, new Member orientation, annual stockholder meeting and market segment breakout sessions. In the coming year, TUG will be represented at major industry trade shows like ISSA and Pack Expo, will hold several regional Member meetings, and will promote Supplier product training seminars. We are constantly working behind the scenes to improve the United Group website interface for increased functionality for our Members. The United Group will remain committed to helping distributors be more profitable and competitive, in a changing marketplace, by offering them new tools, technology and Member services.

DPA Members Receive Discounts And Marketing Allowances, Helping Them Save Money And Grow Sales
MISSION The DPA BUYING GROUP (www.DPABuyingGroup.com) is dedicated to increasing the sales and profits of its member distributors and preferred suppliers. The marketing and procurement organization consists of over 900 independent distributors and 230-plus national vendors within the Janitorial/Sanitary, Safety Equipment & Clothing, Packaging, Restoration, Industrial Tools, and now Public Safety (Police, Fire, & EMS) segments. DPA membership enables profitable business relationships, industry awareness and lifelong friendships. HISTORY Distributor Partners of America (DPA) was formed in September 2000 by 67 independent high volume janitorial/sanitary distributors. From DPA’s inception, members wanted to establish a high caliber and selective organization to increase their sales and profits with DPA preferred suppliers. The group’s preferred suppliers provide discounts and marketing allowances to distributor members to help them save money and grow their sales. DISTRIBUTOR BENEFITS DPA offers independent distributors quarterly marketing allowances on purchases made with the group’s preferred suppliers, which are exclusive to the buying group members. In addition to the marketing allowances, DPA negotiates better pricing, lower minimum order requirements, extra promotions and better prepaid freight policies with its vendors. Also, DPA’s annual buying and networking conference is an opportunity for distributors to meet one-on-one with over 60 supplier companies, and to learn about the latest products and industry innovations. Members can also network in roundtable discussions to share best practices with one another. “The meetings are invaluable because they allow distributors, like me, to establish personal relationships with executive level contacts of each DPA supplier. If you have an opportunity or a problem, you know who you can call, and you know you will receive the maximum support,” said DPA President Jeff Tishko – Colker Company, Pittsburgh, PA. This year’s DPA “Partnership Driven” Conference will take place in Indianapolis, IN, on April 15-17, 2019, at the J.W. Marriott Luxury Hotel. PRODUCT DIVERSIFICATION In order to compete in today’s economy a distributor needs to be versatile and have access to a large product offering at a moment’s notice. DPA allows members to challenge for comprehensive bid opportunities and to meet the increasingly diverse product demands of their customers. “DPA has six unique product divisions, which allow distributors to find and capture sales opportunities that they previously did not have a shot at getting,” says Zachary Haines, DPA CEO. “Whether it’s safety vests, boots, packaging supplies, or power tools, we offer our membership greater opportunities to grow their business.” In addition to the group’s Janitorial & Sanitary Networking Conference, DPA distributors may also choose to attend DPA’s Safety or Industrial tradeshows right next door. The shows are held simultaneously in the same hotel, and the entire conference lasts approximately two days in length. “We supplemented business already this week with good margin orders using DPA suppliers of first-aid kits, custom signs and GFCI electrical products. These were all on existing Jan/San accounts. DPA’s programs have opened industrial/safety-oriented business opportunities that

we traditionally overlook — simple diversity has accomplished a bunch for me,” said Brian Magazine, Gem Chemical, Evansville, IN. In addition to Janitorial and Safety products, the group also offers direct access to manufacturers of tools, fasteners (screws & nails), ladders, measuring tapes, compressors and other industrial related items. Some of these vendors include Makita, Louisville Ladder, Brighton-Best, Irwin and Lenox Tools, and many others. Specialty Cleaning and Restoration is another growing market. DPA’s negotiated product offering includes supplies for mold mitigation & remediation, smoke & fire damage, specialty carpet cleaning, floor care, tile & grout cleaning, and stone care. The group’s newest division is Public Safety, which covers Police, Fire, and EMS supplies. TECHNOLOGY & RESOURCES DPA’s website enables members to source products with the group’s vendors, check out the latest promotions and stay connected with each other. Website users can find valuable resources, product literature and company rosters at the click of a button. This past year, DPA rolled out its new 2018-2019 Buyers Guide. This digital and desktop resource was sent to the procurement persons of every distributor to help them identify who our preferred vendors are for each product category. In addition to a directory feature, the publication contains educational information about some of our manufacturers and their product offerings. This is just another way that DPA drives business between the group’s preferred suppliers and member distributors. The group has strong relationships with many of the industry’s leading ecommerce and technology providers such as DDI System, J&M Catalog, Step1 Software Solutions, Epicor, and ECI. DPA distributors receive significant discounts on their purchases with these companies. “Whether it’s content or inventory management solutions, we have partnerships with some of the best companies in the industry that have been doing it for a very long time, ” said Jeff Tishko, DPA president. “We are always looking for ways to help the independent distributor and to grow the business of our preferred suppliers.” OPERATIONAL SAVINGS DPA saves its member distributors and suppliers money on their operational expenses! The group has contracts with several Service Providers and Human Resource Companies that offer discounts to the group’s members. Discounts include credit card processing, health care, LTL freight services, shipping, payroll processing, cellular phones, catalogs, and even fuel discounts. DPA SUPPLIER BENEFITS DPA preferred supplier programs are a way for suppliers to gain new distribution and also to strengthen their relationships with existing customers. The group only partners with a limited number of vendors in each product category, so every relationship is mutually rewarding. Joining DPA also makes it easier for suppliers to manage their distributor accounts, because the entire group partakes in one simplified national DPA program. DPA is able to work closely with preferred suppliers to achieve their strategic sales results. The group offers an Annual Buying Conference that guarantees interaction with every attending distributor and additional opportunities to access new industry segments. There are also several marketing opportunities available including broadcast emails, member mailings and coordinated promotional opportunities at no cost to the manufacturer. A Group Label Program (regional and national) is available for interested suppliers. DPA strives to keep distributors informed about new supplier developments and product innovations. In this way, DPA suppliers and distributors are “Totally Connected.” “WE OFFER YOU MORE” The DPA Buying Group is located in Cincinnati, OH, with a financial/administrative office in Naples, FL. Maintenance Sales News Focus On: WHOLESALERS & BUYING GROUPS
Pro-Link Celebrates 35 Years
ADVERTORIAL
Of Providing Members With Quality Brands, Superior Service
elebrating its 35th year in 2019, Pro-Link’s main focus remains the same: To provide distributor members with quality brands consisting of superior products and services that help their end-user customers deliver cleaner facilities at lower total costs.
This strategy involves working on better national and Pro-Link brand procurement, evaluating and implementing supply chain solutions and integrating strategic accounts. It’s the kind of work that individual distributors have difficulty completing on their own, but through Pro-Link, this type of service is made easier by everyone working together.
“Pro-Link provides programs, products and services to a select group of distributor members across the country, and continues to expand this membership base involving high quality companies and people,” Pro-Link Vice President of Sales Mark Prosser said. “We not only offer a wide selection of national brands, there is also Pro-Link’s own brand of products that helps our distributors stand out within their specific markets. This involves a spectrum of items in every category, including chemicals, floor pads, mops, can liners and paper. Basically, just about anything a distributor needs.” Pro-Link is a national full-service janitorial supply, marketing and procurement organization, founded in 1984. Today, it has more than 105 members and over 130 distribution points throughout the United States. “We closely monitor the service areas of new members to prevent the overlapping of sales territories,” Prosser said. “We don’t want our members to be in direct competition with one another when it comes to the development and sale of our popular Pro-Link branded items.” Along with a growing membership base, Pro-Link has also added to its list of suppliers within the past year, with plans to strategically expand its supplier network further in the future. “We have expanded our number of suppliers to better cover such growing categories as packaging and food service,” Prosser said. “Our members continue to face new competitors in the marketplace, such as big box retailers. They are competing for the same space. Therefore, it’s important that our members expand their horizons and markets. This helps them become stronger distributors to end-use customers. “We have always been somewhat restrictive when it comes to suppliers, trying to avoid a logjam of competitors within the Pro-Link supplier network.” Another benefit for members is Pro-Link’s three regional distribution centers (RDCs), located in Chambersburg, PA; Atlanta, GA; and Reno, NV. The three RDCs help Pro-Link members buy in smaller quantities, receive orders overnight in many cases, lower overall inventory costs, improve inventory turns and increase customer efficiencies. “These RDCs remain critical to the success of our members, giving them access to just-in-time inventory,” Prosser said. “Further development of our RDC program will continue. Its main purpose is to allow Pro-Link to hold inventory, allowing members to bring in smaller quantities to their facilities, reducing their inventory investment in the process.”
SPECIFIC PRO-LINK PROGRAMS
Several other established Pro-Link programs continue to help member distributors succeed in today’s competitive marketplace. These include:
■ ISSA CMI Training: Pro-Link has developed ISSA CMI (Cleaning Management Institute) verified training courses, allowing members to sign up their clients for the necessary online training to become CMI-certified workers. The CMI program is designed for the most basic end-user. Pro-Link offers this opportunity at the field level;
■ Baseline Selling: Pro-Link has developed a jan/san-specific Baseline Selling program manual with industry examples, worksheets and checklists, based on the book Baseline Selling by Dave Kurlan. The Baseline Selling program also focuses on management and employee recruitment issues. Pro-Link officials have also offered a one-day workshop for members, in association with an investment banker specializing in mergers and acquisitions, discussing the proper mechanics involved when purchasing another company;
■ Long-Term Care (LTC) And Other Initiatives: A comprehensive program for the cleaning of LTC facilities is available from Pro-Link. The program helps end-users at LTC facilities clean and consistently provide a safe and healthy environment for residents. It also addresses key areas of concern, such as infection prevention, cross-contamination issues, and CMS (Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services) ratings, while finding ways to reduce housekeeping costs. Meanwhile, Pro-Link’s comprehensive green cleaning program takes a big-picture approach to the use of environmentally-preferable products and systems. Pro-Link has also continually expanded its green-certified and bio-based product offerings. In another area of expertise, the Pro-Link BSC (Building Service Contractor) program gives distributor members the tools, ideas and training to help their BSC customers when it comes to bidding, ordering, budget tracking, building audits and cleaning procedure training presentations (in English and Spanish). A quarterly “BSC Advisor,” focusing on current BSC business issues, is also available. To complement these tools, BSCs can receive customizable add-on service material to help them extend the scope of offerings now available to their existing customers.
34 — Maintenance Sales News — January/February 2019
Also, Pro-Link members can sell directly to federal facilities in their local markets under Pro-Link’s GSA contracts. Selling under these contracts eliminates GSA fees for Pro-Link members. This program matches government quote solicitations with a local Pro-Link member; ■ Member Development Managers & Online Training Center (OTC) Support: Pro-Link will continue its commitment and delivery of core services in 2019. This includes the industry’s most favorable ratio of in-the-field representation to distributor members — providing a high level of support, training and field coverage. Pro-Link Member Development Managers work with distributor owners on strategy and with distributor sales reps on execution. Complementing its sales team training efforts is Pro-Link’s OTC, serving as a comprehensive training resource for distributor members. The OTC for member DSRs is product- and application-specific. Members are able to visit this system 24/7 to see which of their employees completed the different online courses being offered; and, ■ Annual Conference & Other Functions: ProLink provides several highly-valued events for members and vendors throughout the year. The Pro-Link Annual Meeting is scheduled for April 28 to May 2, 2019 at The Omni Homestead Resort in Hot Springs, VA. It will include a guest speaker, roundtable discussions, member/vendor meetings, open discussions and interaction sessions between members, and a Pro-Link 35th anniversary celebration. Pro-Link also provides annual regional meetings with its members, as well as a meeting and reception each year at The ISSA Show. “Pro-Link enjoyed a very successful year in 2018, and we expect 2019 will bring added growth,” Prosser said. “This includes a focus on welcoming new members from territories that are currently open.” Contact: Pro-Link, Inc., 45 Dan Road, Suite 250, Canton, MA 02021. DDI System Helps To Rise Supplies Double Its Business and Compete Against National Distributors Jorge Salcedo started his New York City-based distribution business with just a trash bag and an idea—to provide next day delivery of plastic and paper supplies to restaurants, including weekends, with 24-hour customer service, no minimum orders and no additional storage or delivery fees. Just seven years later, To Rise Supplies is thriving in the concrete jungle with the help of DDI System’s Inform ERP Software.
Building from Data
Taking on a Better Solution
From the beginning, Jorge Salcedo knew that data was one of the most important commodities his businesses had. Data would not only help him identify which products to sell and how much inventory to stock for, but it would also provide critical insights for the massive growth To Rise aimed to achieve.
To Rise took to the task of evaluating ERP solutions to capitalize on their data and streamline operations. Unimpressed with the inexperience RI VPDOO VWDUW XSV DQG WKH JHQHULF R྾ WKH VKHOI VROXWLRQV R྾HUHG E\ larger suppliers, Jorge looked to larger distributors to learn what they succeeded with. That’s when he was introduced to DDI’s Inform ERP.
But data wasn’t Jorge’s only challenge. “Inventory management was an issue. Our business model is based on providing a next-day delivery guarantee, requiring us to be on top of our forecasting game,â€? says Salcedo. “Forecasting was becoming increasingly challenging with each new customer due to our limited systems and lack of data around VDOHV QHW SURÂżW DQG WUDFNLQJ PDUJLQV ´ 6DOFHGR DGGV
“I spent 10 hours talking to DDI about Inform and going over all the details, said Jorge. “I had all kinds of questions and DDI answered everything I threw at them, proving to me this was a company who had the industry expertise required and knew what they were doing.

STEP1 Software: The Future Of Jan/San Distribution Is Here See why STEP1 is the #1 installed system in the Jan/San industry. Our SQL-Server based system makes us the most modern package serving the industry. Our state of the art tools help our customers to grow rapidly. 3-Time Winner of ISSA's prestigious 'Best Customer Service' Award.
Our Sales Rep app is a big success. Use this impressive tool to enter orders,
check stock, enter quotes, and manage your territory. It is also integrated with our optional calendar/CRM/Business Intelligence system. The CRM system shows at-a-glance if you are up or down in this account, and also suggests items that other like customers are buying that this customer is not buying. The heart and soul of the distribution business is order entry. This is the most important point of contact between your customer and your company. STEP1’s Order Desk is designed to have every answer just one click away. Customer service people can see when the last order was, what the last price was, what the new price should be and what this customer should be ordering today. Credit and payment history are immediately available, whenever they are needed. New items are just a click away and so is the on-line catalog. For the owner, STEP1 has two impressive tools. First is the CEO Dashboard, which lets you see all the vital stats of your business at-a-glance. Extensive drill-downs allow you to investigate anything that looks different than what you were expecting. You can also set goals that help you track your progress. Second is STEP1’s Dimensions Business Intelligence system. Dimensions is an easy to use guided query system for the owner or manager. See which items are doing best with your customers, and see the range of special prices being offered to customers for each item. One more click will show all similar customers that have NOT yet purchased this item.
The information available to the Sales Manager is amazing.
You will be instantly able to see how the company is performing vs. your goals. This tracks through to sales offices, if you have multiple branches, then tracks through to all the individual sales people. Be able to sort and search the data to see margins by customer, by item, or by vendor. This is a separate module available just for your sales manager that automates the normal tasks of this job.
STEP1 also has several tools for your customers. There are two cus-
tomer order entry systems available. One is browser based, and will show the customer special pricing on any item they have previously purchased along with pictures and descriptions of the items. The other is a package that connects directly to you, and shows the customer status of pending orders and pricing on any items that they have not already purchased. There is also a package for your very large customers that helps the customer track their budgets and consumption. This is very useful for customers like school districts, city and county governments, and health care companies. STEP1 seamlessly integrates with JM Catalog, which is the best on-line catalog in the industry. It features 225,000plus items in the Jan/San industry.
Customer special pricing is always an issue. STEP1 has a package called Price Manager that helps take some of the work out of all the special pricing. You can
use Price Manager to assign pricing discounts or markups to groups of items for a customer. For example, you might have a policy of 23 percent discount off all linear low-density liners for the hospital. This way, no matter what
42 — Maintenance Sales News — January/February 2019
liner they choose, the pricing will be automatic and correct. This feature has helped STEP1 customers immensely. Just think of all the time you spend with customer pricing issues. STEP1 also has a margin preservation system, so that if costs go up, it shows you what you should charge to maintain the same margin as the last purchase for this customer.
If you have a service department for machine repair, STEP1 has an excellent solution called the Service Desk. This package tracks machine
repair by serial number, so that you can easily recall a machine and see all the previous service history. It also tracks total number of times the machine has been in for repair, and the total amount spent on repairing the machine. STEP1 customers have found this very useful because it helps pinpoint troublesome machines that would be less expensive for the customer to replace and stop repairing the old one.
Status codes allow you to see at-a-glance the status of every job in for repair. Statuses such as ‘On Bench’ or ‘Waiting on Part’ allow you to keep the cus-
tomer quickly informed of the status of their repair. Service Desk also has a companion product called Service Manager. The Service Manager package tracks billable time by Service Rep. This allows the owner or manager to determine the true profitability of the Service Department. It also tracks turn-around time of equipment and other key Service Department statistics.
Your warehouse people will enjoy the Warehouse Manager.
This package allows your warehouse personnel to see all the orders waiting on delivery and lets them sort the orders into truck runs on-screen. The system also allows them to grab a “wave pull” ticket, which would allow them to make one sweep around the warehouse and pick all orders for a truck run at once (this is not required, just optional). Customers have reported savings of about 3 hours per 100 orders by doing it this way, and have increased picking accuracy. Warehouse Manager also has a feature to mark an entire truck’s orders as “shipped” with one click. Once marked, the computer knows this inventory is out of the building and won’t show as floor stock. Haz-Mat issues are also addressed with this package.
Billing is very easy, since the orders are already organized by truck. When the truck comes back,
just handle any exceptions that need to be addressed. Then with one click, all orders on the truck are billed. If bills need to go with the truck, then there is an option to accomplish this as well.
General Ledger, Accounts Receivable, and Accounts Payable round out the package. The G/L is completely integrated and very automatic. A/R and A/P have features built in that STEP1 customers have suggested to make their jobs easier and faster.
STEP1 combines the most modern technology with a package that addresses every aspect of your business. STEP1
is the system of the future for Jan/San Distribution, and the future is today.

New Pig Introduces The PIG® Spill Kit In Large High-Visibility Cart
Spills happen. Large, small, sometimes hazardous. Being prepared to safely and effectively respond to spills is crucial in order to keep workers, and the environment, protected from harmful releases. New Pig has recently introduced the PIG® Spill Kit in Large High-Visibility Cart to help facilities respond quickly, and more efficiently, to large spills. “The cart provides a highly visible central station for more absorbents and spill supplies than most available spill carts — three times more than the original PIG Spill Cart,” according to New Pig. Designed to find the right absorbent without digging or dumping, the cart’s large swing out doors and flip top lid offer responders instant and full access to spill response supplies. Eight-inch rear wheels and front swivel casters allow the cart to move swiftly over uneven surfaces, through doors and aisles. In addition, it holds a mounted roll of PIG Mat for easy pull-and-tear dispensing. PPE is also included to guard responders against splash backs. Available in absorbent variations for universal, oil-only or hazmat spills, the Spill Cart contains PIG Absorbent socks, mat pads, loose absorbent and wipers. Lambskin Specialties Celebrates Its Original Dust Wand’s 50th Anniversary
Lambskin Specialties, a manufacturer of dusting and manual cleaning tools, is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its Dust Wand duster. In 1969, Albert Schultz introduced the duster to the cleaning industry when he embarked on a road trip through the American heartland with his two young sons. He cold-called on distributors that summer, demonstrating his new creation and proving its effectiveness toward better dusting. “Fifty years later, this item’s longevity proves that when a product is made with integrity, excellent design, quality materials and proven performance, it never goes out of style,” according to Lambskin Specialties The original Dust Wand design was based on the memory Schultz had of watching his grandmother clean furniture by wrapping lambswool around her finger. He experimented with how to effectively attach lambswool to wood handles until he perfected the design. The result was the Dust Wand duster, which enabled housekeepers to reach dusty surfaces with ease. “Natural lambswool offers incredible dusting power. While a light static charge attracts dust, its web of fine fibers and natural lanolin oils works together to trap and hold dust particles, until the duster is spun to release them,” according the Lambskin Specialties. “Lambswool naturally con-
forms to furniture corners, crevices and carvings to effectively remove dust. “As Schultz predicted, the industry embraced his new tool, and his company transformed itself from a small garment industry business to North America’s largest manufacturer of lambswool dusters serving the maintenance industry. Every Dust Wand is still manufactured in the company’s Winnipeg, Canada, factory.”
While Lambskin Specialties has adapted the original Dust Wand duster with different handles, lengths, pom sizes and colors, the design concept has remained true to its origin. Various configurations provide a multitude of dusting solutions, such as models which fit on utility handles (the Wall/Ceiling and Corner Boy models) for virtually unlimited reach to high surfaces. “After 50 years, the industry still depends on the reliability of the Dust Wand duster, a simple design which is well-executed with quality materials,”
said Myron Schultz, who as a young boy accompanied his father on the Dust Wand’s maiden cold-calling blitz, and is now celebrating its golden anniversary as the company’s president. “Dad believed the Dust Wand would create a dusting revolution,” Myron Schultz added. “It certainly did in 1969, and today it remains an industry dusting essential … often imitated but never truly duplicated. It gives us great pride to be serving this wonderful industry for five decades.” Lambskin Specialties, originally incorporated as Schultz Fur Manufacturing, started in the 1940s as a manufacturer of fur trimmings for hats and coats. In the 1960s, it expanded to designing and creating sheepskin footwear and garments. Today, according to the company, it is the largest supplier of dusting products servicing the maintenance industry. Its dusting products include a variety of Dust Wand dusters made with lambswool, synthetic fibers, microfiber and feathers, as well as a full line of floor dusting and cleaning tools. Lambskin Specialties is headquartered and manufactures in Winnipeg, and ships throughout North America and internationally.
