A Message From Outgoing ISSA President,

Ted Stark Dear MSN Readers, Dallas has won me over. Since 1993, I have been a little bitter with Dallas. That is when my beloved Minnesota North Stars picked up and moved to become the Dallas Stars. I was mad, but no more. Dallas is a great city, and The ISSA Show North America 2018 will be a great show. Let me be the first to welcome you. The ISSA Show North America 2018 is going to be unlike any previous ISSA show. First, let’s talk about speakers. We start right off on Monday morning with our first ever Spotlight speaker, David Goggins, retired Navy Seal and Guinness World Record holder. We then have two Keynote speakers. On Wednesday morning it’s Darren Hardy, former publisher of “Success Magazine,” author, leadership and success mentor. Then, wrapping up our week on Thursday morning, President George W. Bush will speak.

“We come together to promote the value of cleaning for health and safety. We come together to, ‘Change the Way the World Views Cleaning.’” Are you feeling charitable? We are introducing ISSA Charities. What used to be the ISSA Foundation Golf Tournament is now Party For A Purpose at Topgolf Dallas. If you play golf, you will have fun and be challenged. If you don’t golf — it’s a party. You will be hearing much about ISSA Charities, which includes ISSA Scholarships, ISSA Hygieia Network and Cleaning for a Reason. Do you want to get smarter? Monday is a full day of training classes, certification programs and seminars. There are dedicated tracks that focus on each member category. Pick a track, or mix and match, to get the information that will be most helpful to your growth and success. Do you want to meet people and get new ideas about cleaning? Wait until you see the show floor. The Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center is all ISSA. We have the entire facility. It is jam-packed with world class exhibitors in the cleaning industry. It won’t be hard to find new, innovative cleaning solutions. Feel like some fun? We have another party on Wednesday night. The first ever All-Convention Back Lot Bash. In the courtyard, in front of the convention center, we take over the area with food, drinks and live entertainment. Want more? Dallas has a plethora of good restaurants, fun bars and entertaining nightlife. The show theme this year is “360 Degrees of Immersion.” This is the show where the global cleaning community comes together to immerse ourselves in enhancing our skills and knowledge, developing innovations, and growing successful companies and organizations. We come together to promote the value of cleaning for health and safety. We come together to, “Change the Way the World Views Cleaning.” I am glad you are part of it. — Ted Stark, ISSA President

MSN’s Q&A With Incoming ISSA President,

Paul Goldin

Paul Goldin, vice president of sales at Avmor Ltd., located in Laval, QC, Canada, will be introduced as the new ISSA president during The ISSA Show North America 2018. The event is scheduled for October 29-November 1, at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center, in Dallas, TX.

Following is an interview with Maintenance Sales News Magazine, where Goldin discusses his background and vision for his upcoming one-year term as ISSA president. MSN: Please provide your background as it pertains to your company and the jan/san industry. Goldin: I have worked in the industry for more than 20 years, covering many areas of our business. I am currently vice president of sales at Avmor Ltd, working strategically with our customer base across Canada. I have been involved in industry associations for the past 12 years, at both the national level (CSSA, now ISSA Canada) and internationally with ISSA. MSN: How long have you been affiliated with ISSA — both from a company perspective and a personal perspective? Goldin: Avmor has been an ISSA member since 1950. Our president, Mattie Chinks, served on the ISSA board as Director Canada (1997-99) and again as vice president, president and immediate past/international president (20042006). I have been involved with ISSA as a Next Gen (formerly Young Executive Society) coordinator and then joined the ISSA board, serving as Director Canada (2014-16). MSN: What made you decide to seek the ISSA president’s post? Goldin: I grew up in ISSA in many ways, first as an active Next Gen member, then as a Next Gen coordinator, and most recently, as Director Canada. Seeking to give back even more as a member of the executive team was a natural next step, and I am privileged to have been elected to the position.

MSN: What improvements can be made to ISSA? Goldin: ISSA is posed for additional global expansion, while still looking after our core members in North America. Both will remain a focus MSN: What are some of the most prominent challenges and concerns in the cleaning/maintenance industry today, and how can these issues be addressed by ISSA and its members? Goldin: Some of the major challenges I see for our industry are creating and maintaining consistent cleaning standards, competition for distributors from outside the industry — such as Amazon and others — attracting young professionals to our industry, and keeping up with rapidly evolving technology. ISSA is at the forefront of helping members with these issues through its many offerings, such as training and certification programs, its recently reimagined Next Gen program and internship and mentoring programs. And of course, the ISSA Show trade show floor is the best place in the world to keep up on new technologies and trends in the industry. MSN: How is the sustainability (green) movement impacting the cleaning/maintenance industry? Goldin: Sustainability has had a major impact on our industry. We have been able to make significant contributions in many segments of our industry, including education, property management, health care and others. There continues to be a strong tie between cleaning and maintenance and the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) program, while at the same time, making significant contributions to the health and welfare of custodians, students, office workers and other building tenants. ISSA’s mission is to change the way the world views cleaning, and, a big part of that, is to promote cleaning as an investment in human health and the environment.

“As an association, our overall role is to raise the value of clean by demonstrating the contribution that we make to health and sustainability.”

MSN: What qualities do you possess that will make you an effective ISSA president? Goldin: I am passionate about the cleaning industry, and I believe very strongly in the work that ISSA does, both in North America and around the world, to ensure the continuous evolution of the industry. I also have extensive knowledge of the field and the many different programs that ISSA has brought to market. Finally, I have experience as a volunteer in the nonprofit sector, both in other industry associations and in our local community. MSN: How do you plan to utilize your leadership experience with your company during your term as ISSA president? Goldin: As president, I will use my leadership experience to open discussions on how to improve existing and, where necessary, implement new programs to further our goal of changing the way the world views cleaning, while helping our members be more successful. We have very talented and knowledgeable individuals serving on the ISSA board, and I look forward to working with them as a team to keep ISSA moving in the right direction. MSN: What, from your perspective, is the role of ISSA in the cleaning/maintenance industry? Goldin: ISSA is uniquely placed to ensure standards are presented for consistent excellence and it is a training resource across the cleaning and maintenance industries.

8 — Maintenance Sales News — September/October 2018

MSN: Please discuss the importance of ISSA reacting to ongoing industry changes. Goldin: It’s our job, as an association, to stay ahead of the trends and changes that we see in the market, and to create educational and training tools and programs for our members to help them successfully adapt to these changes. MSN: What plans do you have as ISSA president for the coming year? What would you like to see accomplished? Goldin: I would like to see ISSA continue to be the leading resource for the cleaning industry by creating value for the membership through market knowledge, fabulous trade shows, and very relevant and impactful education. MSN: Is there anything else that you would like to speak about? Goldin: Only to add that I am very excited to take on the role of ISSA president, and I am appreciative of the trust placed in me by my colleagues.

ADVERTORIAL

Getting a Grip on Floor Maintenance Costs and Safety Risks Every day, as millions of people walk through the doors of facilities large and small, they all have one thing in common: they’re tracking in whatever happens to be on the soles of their shoes. The mess can be anything — from dirt, grease, sand and salt to rain, mud and melting snow — and once it comes in, it’s no easy task to get it back out. The High Cost of Cleaning Up According to the International Sanitary Supply Association (ISSA), as few as 1,000 people can track in 24 pounds of dirt over a 20-day period, at an estimated cleanup cost of $600 per pound. Why such a steep price tag? Professional cleaning associations say that labor alone accounts for 90% of building maintenance costs. Enter the Entrance Mat Every dollar you spend on prevention saves $10 in cleaning costs, says Cleaning and Maintenance Management. That’s why entrance mats are the standard line of defense at the front door. But there’s a catch. ISSA estimates that only 30% of dirt is trapped in the first three feet of the mat, and that it takes 15 feet of walk-off to capture 85% of the mess and keep it from reaching the floor. Even with an exterior scraper mat, you still need enough coverage inside the door for people to take at least six steps. Fragmented Coverage Doesn’t Cut It Let’s say your entrance requires 60 square feet of coverage. That makes the ideal floor mat a single 6' x 10'. But if you’re using standard 3' x 5' carpeted mats, you’ll need to piece four of them together to create adequate coverage. This fragmented approach is not only ineffective at keeping your floor clean, it guarantees that the mats

Grippy Mat makes it easy to provide the walk-off length you need. Just roll it out and stick it down.

The adhesive back on Grippy Mat sticks tight and never leaves residue.

will move out of position, creating gaps and overlaps that become dangerous trip hazards. Hassling with the Heavyweights One of the most popular carpeted entrance mats weighs in at over 8 pounds per square yard. The logic behind the bulk is that the heavy rubber backing will keep the mat in place and eliminate the tripping hazard. But in many facilities, these 30–80 pound behemoths must be removed before routine floor cleaning. That means it’s someone’s job to roll them up, lug them out of the way and then drag them back into position when the floor is dry — an expensive time waster that’s also a back injury waiting to happen. Time to Roll Out a Better Solution Adhesive-backed mats aren’t just an improvement over risky rubber-backed mats, they’re a completely new solution. PIG Grippy® Mats — the world’s first adhesivebacked mats — set the standard for good looks, proven performance and ease of use. Grippy Floor Mat makes a great first impression— even in upscale environments. The mat rolls out to the exact length you need and can be cut to fit for customized, continuous coverage with no gaps or overlaps. The proprietary adhesive backing

keeps the mat firmly in place while it’s in service, but peels up easily without leaving residue when it’s time to replace it. Grippy Mat Helps to Control Costs Grippy Floor Mat effectively traps dirt and moisture and looks cleaner longer. Best of all, the mat can be cleaned in place with a vacuum or water extractor, saving time and labor. Grippy Mat Helps to Mitigate Risk Because Grippy Floor Mat never bunches up, ripples or shifts, it dramatically reduces slips, trips and falls and the liability claims that come with them. This low-profile mat is also certified by NFSI as a high-traction surface and is ADA compliant for walkers and wheelchairs. Here’s what Jackie says in a recent customer review: “Grippy Mat is better than I expected. I bought the 36" x 25' roll to replace rented mats that would constantly bunch up and cause tripping hazards. I placed 8 feet of it at two separate entrances, and I am beyond happy with the results.” Shouldn’t your facility make the switch to the mat that sticks? Learn more at newpig.com/grippyfloormat.

Isaac and Tara Parker pose with their 1969 forklift. The used forklift was one of the first purchases made by the couple when they opened ProChem Dynamics in 2015.

By Rick Mullen, Maintenance Sales News Associate Editor

uring the winter of 2015, on a brutally cold, snowy, below zero South Dakota day, Isaac and Tara Parker, owners of ProChem Dynamics, were on a mission. The couple had just taken the leap into starting their own company. Their new company’s office was in their home, and they had rented a little storage shed as a warehouse. With that covered, the next step was to purchase a forklift to load their truck to make deliveries. They weren’t ready to buy a new one, so the hunt was on to find a used forklift that would meet their needs.

22 — Maintenance Sales News — September/October 2018

“Isaac found an old one on a farm five miles away,” Tara Parker remembered, during a recent interview with Maintenance Sales News at the company’s location in Tea, S.D. “We went over and barely got it started because it was so cold. I followed him home in the truck. He was freezing and had to jump into the truck a few times to get warm.” “I figured, if it made it back the five miles, it was a good buy,” Isaac Parker said. It wasn’t long before the company outgrew the small storage shed, moving into a larger one. The business kept growing and the next move was into a 1,000-squarefoot facility, followed by two more moves with increasingly more space. The most recent location has 6,000 square feet of office and warehouse space. “We still have the forklift and it still runs,” Isaac Parker said. “It is a 1969 model, but it does what it is supposed to do.” “It is a dinosaur, but we like it,” Tara Parker added. “It makes for a good memory

of the time we were just starting out.” Before they started ProChem Dynamics, the Parkers had experience working in the jan/san distributor field. “I’ve been in the industry for almost 20 years,” Isaac Parker said. “Before we started ProChem, Tara had been in the jan/san distributorship segment for probably seven or eight years, on and off, working in the back end with accounts payable and accounts receivable.” Despite its relatively small size, ProChem Dynamics offers a wide array of products in several categories, including cleaning equipment, chemicals, cleaning and restroom supplies, liners, matting, paper products, skin and personal care, food service, grounds maintenance and safety. “For our laundry and warewash customers, we install the chemical pumps. We have our own line of laundry and dish machines that go with that, as well. We sell the dish machines and warewash chemicals,” Isaac Parker said. “I’m always brainstorming for ways we can be different from the competition, because you can get lost in what everybody is doing. Anybody can sell toilet paper — the commodities. I al"MORE POWERFUL CLEAN" ways strive to gain that extra product knowledge to find better ways and methods to service customers. “For example, we try to go attend the Compact Carts ISSA trade show every year to find something that is out of the norm for Security Carts our market that nobody else is offering. I think that keeps us one step Floor Finish Buckets ahead of anybody walking in the door taking business based on price.” Divided Mop Buckets It was the mindset to seek opportunities beyond just selling the same jan/san Double Bucket Mop System commodities that most distributors offer that prompted the Parkers to branch out, Microfiber Cloths and become specialists in the warewash, laundry and ice machine field, as well as Microfiber Tube Mops related chemicals and products. “One day, I was looking at and thinking about all the stuff in a typical facilMicrofiber Flat Mops ity,” Isaac Parker said. “When you go to a facility and see some of the things Microfiber High Dusters that you are not offering, it makes you start thinking about added ways to Microfiber Dust Mops help customers. Some issues can get neglected and, many times, people Hand Trowels and Pads don’t realize it until we, or the health inspector, point them out.” Disposable Mops and Wipers

uch of the state of South Dakota is rural in nature. According to a demographic profile of states by the U.S. Census Bureau, South Dakota ranks No. 17 in total area, but is No. 46 in total population. Sioux Falls is the largest city in the state, with a population of 171,544 people, followed by Rapid City, with a population of 73,569. The state’s capital city, Pierre, is the second least populous state capital in the nation. Its current population is estimated at 14,070 people. The state’s nicknames are “The Mount Rushmore State” and the “The Coyote State.” Indeed, Mount Rushmore is probably the first thing that comes to mind when South Dakota is mentioned. famous Black Hills and Badlands, about 3 million people visit the site yearly to see the faces of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln carved into the mountain. Also located in the Black Hills is the city of Deadwood, where the legendary lawman and gunslinger Wild Bill Hickok was killed in 1876. On the opposite side of the state, tucked into the southeast corner, Tea is on Interstate 29, near the borders of Minnesota, Iowa and Nebraska. Located just minutes south of Sioux Falls, ProChem Dynamics’ primary service area is within a 100-mile radius of the city.

“We service customers in Sioux City, IA, (about 80 miles south of Tea on I29), and in Omaha, NB (about 96 miles south on I-29),” Isaac Parker said. “Our service area also includes a small portion of southwest Minnesota, northwest Iowa and about a quarter of South Dakota. Every year we have experienced growth, as evidenced by our many moves.” Growth also comes with more expenses, therefore much thought and planning preceded each move. There was also discussion about whether to continue to rent space or to purchase property. For now, renting was the best option, the Parkers decided. “The potential for more growth is there,” Isaac Parker said. The Parkers would like to hire a couple more employees, specifically a sales person and a machinery repair tech. At this time, Isaac Parker is the main sales person and he also repairs machinery. “We now have seven employees, some of whom work part time,” Tara Parker said. “We have one driver on the road. Some days, I pitch in and help with deliveries.” While some jan/san distributors might concentrate on selling to one or two segments over others, such is not the case with ProChem Dynamics. When asked about the company’s customer base, Isaac Parker said, “We will service anybody.” Tara Parker added, “We are in South Dakota, so we can’t be picky. We have to go after everyone.” “There is not enough of one kind of business out here to really survive,” Isaac Parker added. “We do a lot of traveling, serving a 100-mile radius from the Sioux Falls area. Anybody that is using almost anything is a possibility — schools, office buildings, building service contractors, colleges and everything in-between.” For the laundry and warewash business, ProChem Dynamics customers include hotels, jails, prisons and some health care facilities. Another of ProChem Dynamics’ specialties is selling and installing dilution systems. “Dilution systems are a moneysaver for customers,” Isaac Parker said. “However, there are some people who still don’t want to make the switch. Some customers are convinced if they mix their own chemicals, the resulting product will do a better job. It is kind of an old way of thinking.” Dilution systems are also desirable by many customers for their inherent safety aspects. “They can prevent errors and can keep a customer’s employees from having to handle a chemical that can harm them,” Tara Parker said. “Furthermore, a dilution system can keep someone from grabbing the wrong jug and adding a chemical to the mix that can be harmful.” Isaac Parker agreed that safety is a big factor in the usage of dilution systems.

“With dilution systems, people can’t splash chemicals on their face or mix something together they are not supposed to,” Isaac Parker said. In addition to the possibility of an employee getting seriously injured, such accidents can mean lost production time and drive up a customer’s insurance costs, Isaac Parker explained. “Anyway we can help a customer lower the risk of something bad happening, that is a value to him/her,” he said.

WHAT’S IN A NAME?

n William Shakespeare’s play “Romeo and Juliet,” Juliet says to Romeo, “What’s in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.” That may be true for the doomed lovers, but, in the business world, as a company’s name will become, in essence, its “brand,” naming a company is often well thought out by ownership. So it was with the Parkers, as they needed a name that would best represent the company they were starting from scratch. “We were brainstorming one night and we wanted a name that would reflect professionalism,” Tara Parker said. “We work with chemicals and we thought those two aspects of what we wanted to convey could go together — ProChem. We also wanted something with a little more flair, and that is where the name Dynamics comes in, as there are dynamics in all of our relationships with people.” The manner in which employees represent ProChem Dynamics’ “brand” in their daily activities is also critical in defining the company’s mission to service customers. “We want our drivers to always be aware that our name is on the vehicle he/she is driving,” Isaac Parker said. “We teach them to pay attention to how they hold themselves when they get out of that vehicle, and how they act toward the customer. It is our name that is on almost everything that goes out the door.” The Parkers seek employees who will take ownership of the company’s reputation, property and products like they were their own. “We are here to serve our customers. If they want a little favor, we tell our people to go ahead and do it, but then come back to us and ask if it was OK,” Isaac Parker said. “We don’t want our people walking up two or three flights of stairs with stuff, because that can be a problem for us, and could create a problem for the customer is he/she slips and falls. We don’t want that either. We always treat customers with respect.” Isaac Parker said residents in ProChem Dynamics’ part of the country still trust one another. This is also an important factor in how sales people approach their jobs. “Customers want to trust somebody, especially in this part of the country,” he said. “People will talk about their families or some other things that might be important to them. If a sales person is there for them and is willing to work outside the box, rather than just a 9-to-5 job, he/she can make a good living in sales. Everybody needs the products we offer, and if we are not selling them, somebody else will.”

As ProChem Dynamics continues to grow, building a staff with the mind-set the Parkers are seeking is an ongoing process. In today’s economy with low unemployment, it is more difficult than ever to find good, quality employees. “It is hard to find somebody who will be good in sales, Isaac Parker said. “That is kind of where we are now, finding that man or woman who wants to take ownership of his/her sales position, and develop business, relationships and prospects.

size a “family atmosphere, while others view their staff as a “team. “We view our company culture as both a family and a team, Tara Parker said. “Some of our employees work part time, because they volunteer hours in other places. We are able to be accommodating and work with their schedules. “I think there is a level of comfort that emanates from everybody. They work hard because they appreciate the different accommodations we have made for their schedules. A TEAM/FAMILY COMPANY CULTURE “As far as getting together and doing other things outside of work, we try to do that, too, because there are friendships that evolve. We are here for each other s ProChem Dynamics continues to grow, setting the tone for the type of every day in order to make this company a place where people look forward to company culture that the Parkers would like to see evolve is another im- coming to work, versus a situation where people wake up in the morning dreading portant cog in making the company successful. If they need extra help in inventory management, we will help. If a customer needs deliveries more than once a week, we try to accommodate him/her. As Isaac Parker said earlier, a trusting nature is a common trait of the people who live in ProChem Dynamics’ service area. This is evident in customers allowing him to help manage their inventory. “I help with inventory management for a lot of people, he said. “They trust me. They know I’m not going to send them more products than they need at a particular time, but I am also not going to let them run out of product. If something happens, I will take the blame. “I literally walk into these places. Some of them trust me enough to give me the keys or key cards to their facilities. “We try to be accessible to customers more than just 9-to-5,” she said. “For example, Isaac recently had a customer who ran into some difficulty with a floor job over a weekend. He met the customer here at our facility, and then they went to the job site together. Isaac contacted some of our chemical manufacturers to brainstorm and see what he could do to help. So, having that accessibility is valuable.” Isaac Parker added: “The customer’s business was going to be open that Monday morning, so he had to finish the job by Sunday night.”

roChem Dynamics is in its sixth location since it started in 2015. Each move was a result of growing sales as more room was needed for inventory. The company’s current location is now more than just a place to warehouse products. It is still a relatively small space, but it has some distinct advantages over the former moves. “We have docks. We are always joking about how excited we are to have loading docks,” Isaac Parker said. In the previous locations, loading a truck was done outdoors in the weather, and South Dakota winters can be harsh. “In the past, we had to pretty much load outside except on the occasional day when everything was out of the way, and we could back the truck just far enough into the storage area to load indoors,” Tara Parker said. “Now, we have room to have our vehicles inside to load and double check everything. Also, items don’t get wet. That goes back to customer service. Nobody wants to get a wet box of something. We also have a larger area to service equipment.” Isaac Parker added: “It is amazing that when you don’t have something as simple as a loading dock, and then you get one, it is like a miracle just happened.” Like most jan/san distributorships, much of the action in fulfilling customers’ orders is centered around the NOW TWO GREAT DEODORIZING warehouse, loading docks and makTECHNOLOGIES IN ONE UNIT! ing deliveries in company trucks. As was mentioned before, drivers are trained to be aware of how they conduct themselves while delivering, because they often come in contact with customers more than any other employees. ProChem Dynamics’ drivers wear uniform shirts with the company’s logo. The Parkers feel this is important, not only to promote the company’s professionalism, but also for safety reasons. In our modern culture Activator 500 HG 1500 Hydroxyl Tornado Ozone Generator plagued by frequent shootings, an unidentified person wandering around a facility might be cause for alarm. “For example, when we deliver to schools, people want to know who Our entire line of ozone and hydroxyl deodorizers are designed, engineered and we are and what we are doing there,” assembled in the USA Tara Parker said. “We have received numerous compliments from customers who say, ‘I just texted an order an hour ago and you are here already. We are so thankful, we were out of the product.’ That is really nice, as such customers don’t have to take the time to run over here to get something. In addition to being trained to take care of the products they are delivering, as well as the truck they are driving, as if they were their own, drivers also help keep an eye out to spot anything amiss or that needs attention in a customers’ facility, pertinent to ProChem Dynamics. “For example, a driver might come back and say, ‘I noticed they are almost out

of gloves at this place. I just want to give you a heads up. Maybe we can contact them to see if they want more gloves,’â€? Tara Parker said. “We want to make sure issues are handled before they become a major problem. That goes back to customer service, making sure customers know we are there to help.â€? Isaac Parker added: “Sometimes, while making deliveries, people in the back will know something is broken and they will tell the driver, thinking he might be able to fix it before they have to tell their boss. Sometimes I will get a call from the driver that something is broken even before the customer’s purchasing guy noticed, which is OK. “If a driver is delivering, and the person in the back knows something of ours is broken — maybe a dispenser or a dish machine — the delivery person will call me and say, ‘Is there anything I can do?’ If he can repair it, I will tell him what to do. If not, I will show up later in the day and fix it.â€? ĎÍ˜ϴϳϳ͘ϴϾώ͘ϾϯϲϏ ÍŽ žŽŽŜĆ?Ĺ˝ĹŒÄ?Ĺ˝ĆŒĆ‰Í˜Ä?Žž South Dakota typically has long, harsh winters with its share of snow and ice. Such weather must be taken into account in the company’s delivery operation. “One thing South Dakota is known for is not clearing the roads right away,â€? Isaac Parker said. “If we have a delivery scheduled on a particular day on a county road and the snow and/or ice is too bad, we will probably wait to go that way the next day or so. “If there is a foot or more of snow, we will stay home. If a quarter inch of freezing rain is predicted for later in the day, and we have deliveries scheduled 70 miles away, I don’t want our driver to be that far from home. We keep a close eye on the weather out here. “We might be getting a heavy snowfall here, while at a customer’s facility 30 miles south, it might not be snowing. Nonetheless, I will call the customer and tell him/her we aren’t coming because of the weather. They understand why we aren’t coming, and that we will probably be there the next day.â€? pair duties, but that is going to change in the near future. “I do a little bit of everything,” he said. “It is a struggle keeping up with repairs, with all the other things I have to do. On the positive side, we have grown to the point where we need somebody to do the tech work. There is enough there to keep someone busy. We are searching for the right person to fill that position.” One of the Parkers’ goals is to institute a preventive maintenance program for customers, which will be possible with an equipment tech. “We always try to show customers what they should and shouldn’t do when it comes to how to operate and take care of their equipment,” Isaac Parker said.

“Some customers have many people running their equipment. They need somebody to come in, maybe once a month, to make sure their equipment is working right. That is one of the reasons we are looking to hire a tech guy. We will schedule him to conduct a preventive maintenance program with certain customers once a month or once a quarter.” As is the case with sales people, finding good machinery repair techs is also difficult. “Some people have good mechanical skills, while others are good with numbers,” Tara Parker said. “We want to find a qualified mechanic who also has good people skills.” Another advantage of the company’s current location, that wasn’t available before, is having the space to bring customers in for training purposes. “We will probably start having seminars here next year. There might be a day when people can come to be trained. Right now, training is mainly at customers’ facilities,” Tara Parker said. Isaac Parker keeps his finger on the pulse of customer needs, reminding them when it might be a good time to have him conduct a training session. For example, maybe an educational facility is struggling to get ready for the new school year. “I always try to remind our bigger customers, who often bring in new people, that maybe we should get together for training,” Isaac Parker said. “I will often let customers pick a topic. I tell them, ‘Just let me know what day, because you know when all your people are working, and I will be there.’ “For example, at certain times of the year, a customer might want me to go over general cleaning techniques, or how to burnish or strip a floor with his/her staff. If it is just before summer, I might suggest that it’s a good time to go over stripping and deep scrubbing floors or how to clean carpet.”

leaning for health, safety and sustainability are the terms used most often these days in association with “green” products. ProChem Dynamics has the products and expertise to help customers who want to pursue a green program. However, only about 20 to 30 percent of the company’s customers are interested in such products, Isaac Parker said. “We always try to let customers know that we have green products in case they are interested. DOING BUSINESS IN AN EVER-CHANGING MARKETPLACE

odern technologies are constantly evolving, including the use of the internet by businesses. Many companies, including ProChem Dynamics, have websites that allow customers to place orders online. While online ordering can be beneficial for a jan/san distributor, the same technology has also opened the door to competitors, such as large online retailers, who also sell cleaning products. However, it is the service available after a sale that traditional distributors bring to the table that sets them apart from online companies. “The one thing the internet retailers are never going to offer is service. You can’t get service off the internet,” Isaac Parker said. “I think when people realize the service they are missing, they will come back to a traditional jan/san distributor, because

they know they need the service behind the products they purchase. Despite that competition, we are in an area that is growing economically, which is nice.” Another challenge that has cropped up in recent years in ProChem Dynamics’ area is the consolidation of health care entities. The problem arises when hospitals and nursing homes are part of companies that have many locations. “Gaining extra business in health care has become an issue because, with consolidation, purchasing is now done for multiple states,” Isaac Parker said. “If you want to do business with them, you have to service all of their locations, and we can’t do that. We used to be able to go down the road 20 miles and sell to an individual nursing home or hospital. Now, even if they need help, they can’t buy from us. Consolidation has made a big difference.” Tara Parker added, “If you are not a part of their buying group, then they can’t buy anything or get a service from you.” Another potential challenge is the impact the current tariff situation might have on prices. “We have been getting letters from vendors saying they might have to institute price increases at any time because of the tariffs,” Tara Parker said. “They say, if the tariffs happen, there will be an immediate increase.” Color Coded “When discussing tariffs, I think the Cloths Pocket Mops biggest thing in this business, is not to Trowel Pads jump the gun and start rasing prices across the board, because there might be products that are not affected,” Isaac Parker said. “People will appreciate companies that don’t increase prices just because they think everybody else might. “As Tara said, we have received letters from manufacturers that said there might Two or might not be price increases, depend3 Gallon ing on how it all plays out. WHAT’S NEXT?

saac Parker said the biggest challenge ProChem Dynamics is facing, as was mentioned before, is finding a quality sales person and a machinery service tech who will buy into and commit to the company’s values and expectations. “After that, a building of our own would be the next step,” he said. As the business grows, the Parkers are making sure they maintain a healthy work/life balance. “Our daughter, Shaleigh, will graduate from high school this year, and we have a 12-year-old son, Peyton, who has Down syndrome. So, we really need to make sure we keep priorities in order,” Tara Parker said. “We want to maintain a proper work/life balance,” Isaac Parker said. “That is a big thing for us because, for awhile in the past, we were missing that. With the kids growing older, we want to make sure we are there for them.” Contact: ProChem Dynamics, 115 E High Pointe St., Suite 4, Tea, SD 57064. Phone: 844-472-3552. Email: tara@prochemdynamics. MSN Interviews 4 Session Speakers

2018 ISSA Seminar Presenters Discuss Importance Of Advancing Education & Increasing Motivation

eeking advanced education and increased motivation are essential when running any successful business and/or performing a wide variety of tasks — including those in the cleaning industry. Understanding this importance, many educational and motivational sessions are scheduled during the ISSA Show North America 2018, taking place October 29-November 1, at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center, in Dallas, TX. Session topics for this year’s event include a better understanding of the modern jan/san buyer, infection control strategies for facilities, green cleaning initiatives, best practices for hiring, how to drive business growth through strategic market expansion, how to implement better time management — and much more.

Maintenance Sales News Magazine recently spoke with four session speakers who are scheduled to appear at this year’s ISSA Show, to learn more about the type of educational opportunities available for attendees.

THE REAL VALUE OF A GOOD ATTITUDE

n today’s sometimes rough and tumble world, it’s easy to develop a bad attitude about work, and life in general. There are steps, however, that can be taken to improve attitude. This will be the message presented by Matt Booth, during his session titled, “A Bad Attitude Is Like A Flat Tire — You Can’t Get Far Without Changing It.” The session is scheduled from 2:15 to 3 p.m. on Monday, October 29. “Attitude” is a subject that Booth has been researching, writing and talking about for years. “I love the topic, trying to figure out why two people in a same situation will view that situation two different ways, exhibiting two different attitudes,” he said. “It’s a huge topic.” Booth defined the word “attitude” as, “How one person reacts to another person and/or situation that surrounds him/her.” Las Vegas, NV “If one person gets into a minor car Atchison, KS accident, he/she may react differently than another person who also gets into a minor car accident,” he said. “A person’s true attitude is exhibited.” 1 Day Shipping Thomaston, GA Having spent a career focusing on 2 Day Shipping the subject, Booth will discuss how it’s possible to not only survive, but 3 Day Shipping even thrive, in an often negative environment, by exhibiting a more positive attitude. Contact Golden Star for more information on our full line of hard surface cleaning products. “Most people today understand the benefits of being positive at work, and in life,” Booth said. “They know that a positive attitude is essential to Golden Star Inc. | 6445 Metcalf Avenue, Overland Park, KS 66202 www.goldenstar.com | 816.842.0233 | 800.821.2792 success.” The problem, he added, is truly possessing a positive attitude most of the Visit Us At ISSA Booth #5622

time. This is often easier said than done. “We are living in an extremely negative world. The news is filled with floods, fires and hurricanes. There is a big ‘iceberg of negativity’ that floats into everybody’s living room each night,” Booth explained. “On top of that, people today carry around their electronic devices that let them know, almost instantly, every time a school shooting or terrorist attack takes place. “This is the world we live in, not only for us, but also co-workers and clients. It’s therefore important to properly recognize each piece of negativity, in order to remain as positive as possible.” Booth explained that it’s impossible to be positive all of the time. There are even studies that show certain benefits to being angry and negative at times. There is nothing wrong with having “one of those days.” “The problem is when ‘one of those days’ turns into

‘two of those days’ and ‘three of those days,’” Booth said. “There are even people who have had ‘one of those days’ for 10 years in a row. Obviously, that is not OK.” To combat the pervasiveness of a bad attitude, Booth will share strategies, tips and practices people can utilize to become a more positive person. “‘Awareness’ is the first big issue; being aware of your attitude, and the attitudes of those people around you,” Booth said. “My session (at the ISSA Show) will help people become better aware of their attitudes, and the corresponding benefits. “My goal, as a person leaves this seminar, is to have him/her think about ‘attitude’ in a different way — all in an effort to help improve both their work environment and home life.” Booth also offered advice on how attendees, of any educational session, can better retain pertinent information.

Matt Booth

He noted it’s very common for people to attend a variety of seminars at a conference, with the full intention of learning how to better their work and/or overall life. Then, reality sets in, once they return to the workplace. “Therefore, it’s important to take notes and prioritize what is truly important. A person has to tell him/herself, ‘Over the next 30 days, I want to implement the information that I have learned,’” Booth said. “Like shopping for a single coat, in a store full of coats, it’s important that people who attend educational sessions find certain bits of information that will best fit them personally, and within their business model, and then work hard to put that information to best use right away. “People can become overwhelmed when attending numerous educational sessions. It’s like they are getting hundreds, if not thousands, of ‘coats’ thrown at them all at once. This is why it’s important to be mentally prepared, sorting out the information that will work best for him or her.”

“If you remain the same person from one year to the next, you are not growing, and will get left behind. Education helps people grow and move forward.” — Matt Booth

Through it all, Booth said it’s important that people continue to seek education while attending conferences, no matter their role within a company or industry. “If you remain the same person from one year to the next, you are not growing, and will get left behind. Education helps people grow and move forward,” Booth said. “I was raised on a farm in southwestern Wisconsin and learned early in life that you reap what you sow. On a farm, everything is either growing a little bit each day or dying a little bit each day. Those who receive education, and learn something new, are growing a little bit each day, despite their actual age.” Visit www.mattbooth.com for more information.

“My main goal for this seminar is to provide ideas on improving profitability within a person’s organization, while capturing new marketshare.” He reiterated that the cleaning industry is rapidly changing, and that challenges are great. Successful manufacturers and distributors must stay abreast of this changing environment, and continue to invest to keep their businesses healthy. “Understanding your strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats requires constant education, related to solid business fundamentals and available partnerships,” Lancaster said. “Educational events, like those made available by ISSA and the National Association of Wholesaler-Distributors (NAW), are just some of the ways a person can become a ‘student of the industry,’ which is critical in this ever-changing market.”

From Tolco:

The Komodo™— A Different Breed Of Urinal Mat

The purpose of a urinal mat is to protect the floor from uric acid damage, while reducing restroom odor. These objectives are not only met, but improved upon, by Tolco Corporation’s new Komodo™ Urinal Mat. “The Komodo™ is a significantly different urinal mat from what is currently available,” Tolco Corporation Director of Sales & Marketing Alberto Martinez said. “For starters, this product is fully synthetic, consisting of nonwoven material, and does not absorb urine. Instead, it allows the urine to rapidly evaporate by wicking moisture across the mat and to the surface, minimizing the potential for restroom odor. “Also, a traditional urinal mat must be picked up when the floor is mopped. With the Komodo™ Urinal Mat, once it’s in place, it can remain on the floor during the cleaning process. End-users can simply mop over the Komodo™.” The Komodo™ Urinal Mat also does not have a tradiIt’s a full size mat. tional rubber or plastic frame, which can make a mat unwieldy when it comes time for disposal. After 30-plus days of use, The Komodo™ can simply be folded and easily discarded in a nearby garbage container. And, due to its modern adhesive back, the Komodo™ Urinal Mat will not “move around” under the urinal. It stays put, and will not become a tripping hazard. In fact, the product is NFSI (National Floor Safety Institute) certified as “High-Traction,” thus reducing the potential for slips and falls. “Another major advantage to our new product is how end-users can easily remove the back liner to get to the adhesive, which secures the urinal mat to the floor. This is accomplished by implementing the ‘crack and peel’ method of removing the back liner, similar to removing the backing of a sticker,” Martinez said. “In addition, the back inch of the mat’s underside has no adhesive, so end-users can simply grab that part of the product to start the liner peeling process.” When it comes time to replace the Komodo™ Urinal Mat, end-users can simply grab the back inch of the mat again, pick it up off the floor and throw the product away. “Its patent pending design allows for packaging that is, on average, 47-plus percent smaller compared to competitors’ packaging, allowing for twice the number of units to be warehoused or stored in the same amount It’s efficiently packed. of space as traditional urinal mats,” Martinez said. “On average, this packaging is also 43-plus percent lighter and is 47-plus percent less in dimensional weight (cube), which provides significant savings when shipping via truck or courier.” These benefits make the Komodo™ Urinal Mat an attractive new item for distributors, Martinez added. “The Komodo™ comes with the tag line, ‘It’s a different breed of urinal mat.’ The sum of all of its benefits makes the product unique,” he said. “It’s a new product that not only performs well, but offers real savings in warehousing and shipping. We have found that these operational benefits are highly desired by our distributor customers.” Development of the Komodo™ Urinal Mat started last year, and involved extensive testing of materials and adhesives, making sure the product would work well with a variety of flooring, including linoleum, tile and stone. “We also tested different sizes and shapes of mats, gradually implementing all of the benefits that are now part of the Komodo™ Urinal Mat,” Martinez said. “This product properly protects floors, reduces the amount of time end-users spend cleaning those floors and deodorizing restrooms, and saves on warehousing space and shipping costs. From the onset, our philosophy has been, ‘Let’s just not make another urinal mat, let’s make a better product in every way possible.’ “This is one of the most ambitious product launches that Tolco Corporation has ever conducted, and we are excited by early interest and sales from our customer base.” A global company, Tolco Corporation is headquartered in Toledo, OH, and has been family owned since its inception in 1961. Today, Tolco sells over 700 products to customers found in the janitorial, foodservice, industrial and other industries. Visit www.tolcocorp.com for more information.

Triple S Holdings Acquires Industrial Cleaning Products, Inc.

T-S Holdings, Inc., (d.b.a. Triple S Holdings) has announced the asset purchase of Industrial Cleaning Products, Inc., (ICPI) West Boylston, MA. “Industrial Cleaning Products, Inc., (a member of Triple S since 2003) is a long standing, well-run organization with a broad base of customers in the central Massachusetts market area. We are very excited to welcome Industrial Cleaning Products and the ICPI Team to the Triple S Holdings family of businesses,” said Alan E. Sadler, president, Triple S Holdings.

“At 76 years of age, I can with confidence say that I am ready to ease into retirement. Knowing that there was not a third generation in line to take over the business, Michael and I decided that this was a good time to sell. Finding a buyer that would continue to provide opportunities for our employees and continue to provide our customers with the level of service and support that they have come to expect was a primary concern for us. Triple S Holdings provided us the opportunity to accomplish both of these goals; keeping ICPI in the Triple S Family made the decision easier for us,” said Fran Tighe, past president and coowner of ICPI.

Sadler said, “Fran Tighe will be taking on a consulting role, and assisting with the transition of customers to the company’s established sales team for the next 12 months. In addition, Michael Tighe will be serving as the branch manager of Triple S – Central MA in the near term, and then transitioning to a role at Triple S Holdings corporate. Eric O’Connor will be the branch director of sales for Triple S – Central MA.” According to the company, Triple S Holdings was created, in part, to provide Triple S members and non-member owners of jan/san distribution companies an exit strategy that would allow them to transition out of their businesses in a manner that would be least disruptive to their employees and customers. Queenaire Technologies: Improving Air Quality & Eliminating Odors

mproving air quality and odor control remain key objectives for people in charge of facility care, as well as the distributors who supply these end-customers. With established brands Newaire, Rainbowair and Queenaire in place, and a management team with over 30 years of air quality and odor control experience, Queenaire Technologies, Inc., provides various products that incorporate up-to-date ozone generating technology, as well as hydroxyl air treatment, to an expanding marketplace. “As a company, we have seen incredible growth thus far in 2018, up 20 percent from this time last year,” Queenaire Technologies President Susan Duffy said. “Obviously, the need for the products we provide continues to increase. I think people are becoming increasingly sensitive to poor air quality and odors. The advanced technology that we have incorporated into our products has also become more familiar.” Working with additional distributors over the past year, who have helped Queenaire Technologies identify new markets, has also been beneficial. “We will continue to look for more distributor partners while exhibiting at this year’s ISSA Show North America (booth 2014), scheduled for October 29-November 1, in Dallas, TX,” Duffy said. “Among the products we will feature at this event are the Newaire™ HO3 - 2500 Air & Surface Treatment System and the Newaire™ Plugin Air Purifier.”

Newaire™ Plugin Air Purifier

Helping Queenaire Technologies serve as a “one stop shop” for solving odor and air quality issues, the Newaire™ HO3 - 2500 Air & Surface Treatment System provides the benefits of both hydroxyl air treatment and ozone generation. “We have taken the best characteristics of each type of air and surface treatment for this product, which was introduced two years ago,” Duffy said. “It can be used as an hydroxyl generator, in areas where people are present, to get rid of odors, bacteria and viruses. It can also be used to generate ozone in the same locations, with the use of a timer, while people are not present, for a more in-depth odor treatment and cleaning. The range of the Newaire™ HO3 - 2500 is 6,000 square feet.”

According to a press release, “Travis has provided sage council and strong leadership during his tenure, and we are a better organization because of his commitment to the staff and members of SMA. Thank you for your service to our organization, Travis.” Announcement of the new board chair is accompanied by additional ap-

pointments of new leaders to the posts of board vice chair and secretary – treasurer. Mark Melzer, president of Milwaukee-based Nassco, Inc., will succeed John Caldwell in the position of vice chair, and Greg Rogers, president of Cosgrove Enterprises, Inc., based in Miami, is the board’s new secretary-treasurer. “As is the case with John Caldwell, our new board chair, the appointment of these two highly capable veterans, Mark Melzer and Greg Rogers, is in recognition of the time and energy they have graciously volunteered to foster and preserve the well-being of our SMA members. In so doing, each of these leaders has consistently exhibited the highest level of professionalism, integrity and dedication to the best interest of the group.” SMA also has named two new directors to board positions; David Scalen, executive vice president of Regional Distributors Inc., of Rochester, NY, and Mercer Stanfield, president of Raleigh, NC’s Brame Inc., joins director Mike Nelson, president and CEO of Portland, OR-based Walter E. Nelson Company. Completing the group’s 2018 leadership appointments is Linda Silverman, president of Maintex, Inc., (based in Los Angeles), who is the new chair of SMA’s Member Relations Committee. “SMA’s history is a story of the ethic of collaboration and interdependence among our members, and in-service both to our qualified suppliers, and to our mutual end-user customers. This ethic is fostered by the example set by our board and our committees, serving voluntarily to advise and support the group’s numerous activities,” said McGann. VPR Impex Inc.: Ecological Cleaning Solutions For A Safer Environment

Backed by over 20 years of experience in the ecological vapor cleaning field, VPR Impex Inc., has become the exclusive distributor in North America of VAPORE® professional ecological vapor cleaning systems and LAVA® automatic floor scrubbers. These products are all designed for the jan/san cleaning market, and all are fully made in Italy. “VPR Impex is now responsible for the distribution of all the above products under one umbrella throughout North America,” VPR Impex Inc. President Mario Ruffolo said. “The formation of VPR Impex allows customers to benefit from a one-stop shop for ecological cleaning solutions. With the new VPR Impex Inc., customers’ requests for easy access to additional equipment — such as automatic floor scrubbers (Lava) — have now been answered.” Information about all of these products is available by visiting a new website (www.vprimpex.com), with links to the company’s Facebook, Instagram and YouTube pages, where customers can upload images and videos of various applications. “We are best known for vapor technology. That is our bread and butter. With our commercial/industrial VAPORE® line, we provide customers with the best of what is available as far as quality, products and choices are concerned — not only from vapor-only systems, but also vapor and suction capabilities,” Ruffolo said. “We have also added the continuous fill feature to all of our commercial vapor systems. These are machines with a cold water reservoir that end-users can fill as they work, taking away issues with down time. This is a big focus.”

The concept of ecological vapor cleaning is relatively new to the North American jan/san marketplace, but it has been well established and practiced in Europe since the early 1980s. This system uses dry vapor cleaning and is certified to eliminate bacteria and viruses such as H1N1, salmonella, listeria, E.coli, as well as bed bugs, fleas, dust mites, lice and other microorganisms, and begins the disinfection process. The key ingredients are water and super-heated vapor in a temperature range from 140°C and 160°C (284°F and 320°F) at the exit point of the accessory. Pressure used in this system ranges between 82.5 psi to 97.5 psi. “Our systems have been certified, tested and approved scientifically to destroy viruses, bacteria and other microorganisms. It begins the disinfecting process due to the high temperature that is used,” Ruffolo said. “We are able to thoroughly clean using only

No need to use your hands — these pans now have built-in “teeth” to clean off broom bristles directly into the dustpan. The back end of the pan has been squared off, instead of a round design, in order to increase the holding capacity for larger pieces of garbage. The Gripper® Doorstop Is Added To Facility Lockdown Protocols The Gripper® Doorstop was developed by Expanded Technologies as an easy way to keep doors open while rooms were cleaned, but it has recently emerged as a critical tool to prevent intruders from entering rooms during a lockdown. It’s a bright yellow door-stop with a hook for easy storage, covered on the bottom with a non-slip material that grips any surface while protecting the floor from scratches. The patented design ensures that even with heavy use, its performance will not slip. The Gripper® Doorstop has been tested successfully on multiple types of flooring. When the doorstop is wedged under the door from the inside of a room, the material on its underside ensures that the door cannot be forced open from the outside. Schools and other facilities are incorporating the Gripper® Doorstop into their lockdown procedures. Call 888-654-7720, or visit www.expandedtechnologies.com.

From Lambskin Specialties: Two New Dusting Solutions Lambskin Specialties has introduced two new dusting solutions — the DMDM-100 Disposable Dusting Mitt and the DSDS-100 Disposable Dusting Sleeve. Both products are manufactured from an unscented spunlace fabric with a pillowy, waffle-like surface, designed to capture and hold dirt, dust and hair, and then be discarded. The “one size fits all” mitt dusts railings, phones, picture frames, computers and other surfaces within hands’ reach. The dusting sleeve slips over all popular wool dusters, including Lambskin’s 312FH, 350EX and 360 models. The duo is recommended for hard surfaces including blinds, ledges, light fixtures, plants and electronics. They are also recommended for use in hotels, hospitals, residential cleaning, bottle shops and more. Visit www.lambskin.com.

The WizKid Products team is excited to add “Stone,” to our lineup of antimicrobial mat colors. This unique blend combines darker brown tones with lighter highlights, to create the subtleties of natural stone. This combination will complement a larger number of modern floor colorings and textures. As expected, it will have all the benefits of our WizKid Mats, eliminating odors on the top and plenty of grip on the bottom to keep it in place. Check out our one-two solution to a cleaner restroom, at www.WizkidProducts.com.

Golden Star proudly introduces the next generation in general floor cleaning. The Pearl wet mop, with its uniquely engineered yarn, captures all the benefits of microfiber in a traditional mop configuration. The Pearl: absorbs 10x its weight in moisture; requires no break-in; enhances the performance of green chemicals; resists mildewing; is bleach resistant; lints less than cotton; utilizes existing hardware; obsoletes the archaic, cut-end, cotton mop.
