BEAUX ARTS MUSEUM ENTRY EDITION | BRUSSELS, BELGIUM

FINAL MODEL 10

CONCEPT

Established in 1803, the Beaux Arts Museum (also known as the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Belgium) houses over 20,000 drawings, sculptures, and paintings. The museum sits within a sloped landscape allowing entrances on different levels as it relates to the streets. The current entry on the East side facing the park is not effective as a public entrance to the museum. The proposed edition’s main purpose is to serve as a new East entrance to the museum. The project plays with the relationship between void and mass creating a unique architectural form within the existing city context and providing unique ways to experience the city and the museum.

ADVANCED DESIGN B | 11

SECTION

The site slopes down from East to West roughly 45 vertical feet creating unique sectional quality in the museum with entrances at different levels. Due to the sectional attributes of the existing building, the edition contains several entries into the main museum on multiple levels depending on program.

CONTEXT

The neoclassical style of the surrounding context gave inspiration for the modern design of the proposed edition. It’s powerful and modern form helps the new entrance stand out within the city scape. The form provides interesting way to experience the city around it as well as the roof scape of the existing Beaux Arts Museum.

UNION

MARKET

PHANTOM

Hoping to reinvent themselves in the midst of a changing economy, the city of Aberdeen is looking at new ways that it can attract visitors and improve the overall appeal of the city. With little to no variation of architecture and no landmarks, navigation through Aberdeen is difficult for first time visitors. In addition, automobiles are treated as a priority over pedestrians. There are not many places for people walking around the city to rest and there is no vegetation within the cityscape. The phantom photos shown are telling of the issues listed above.

COLLAGE

The collages above represent the concepts of the project. Breaking up with current cityscape with varying style of architecture, the integration of green spaces, widening of sidewalks, limiting vehicular traffic, and so on and so forth are just some of the ways that Aberdeen can improve the overall appeal of the city. 36

MASTER PLAN

Many people arrive to Aberdeen by means of train and bus services. Both converge at Trinity Mall (Trinity Mall is located on the map by the train station). Upon exiting the train and bus station onto Guild Street, it is up to the individual to navigate the city which is exceptionally challenging for new visitors. There are no maps located outside the main transit hubs and practically no landmarks or means of wayfinding. The main focus of this project is redesigning the area surrounding Trinity Mall to be visitor and pedestrian friendly and provide the citizens of Aberdeen with new way to engage the city they live in. Making pedestrian traffic the priority by limiting vehicular traffic on Guild Street (the street the transit hubs open up onto) is key to the new design of downtown Aberdeen. The proposed Trinity Center becomes the heart of the city and houses a range of programmatic buildings while providing a large amount of open space for pedestrians and city events. The Market place is an area that can become very successful as a Soho like area by providing a new Market building and connection to the proposed Trinity Center. ADVANCED DESIGN C | 39

SECITON

Due to the rain and cloudy weather in Aberdeen, a glass canopy covers the proposed Trinity Center. Having a glass canopy not only provides protection from the rain but also allows light to filter through the area. The columns that support the canopy conceptually represent trees. The columns would be cladded in copper which would naturally patina over time bringing an organic element to the design. The observation supported above the cultural museum provides views that overlook the city. 40

The rendering shown are views from Guild Street. As people exit the train and bus stations, this will be one of the first things they see. The observation tower is high enough to see over the surrounding buildings providing a landmark for new visitors. ADVANCED DESIGN C | 43

UNION STREET

Views from Union Street show how the projects sits within the city. From the street, the building shares elements with the other buildings around it but is architecturally unique to the context in order to create a landmark. The renderings shown detail the what patrons see upon approaching Trinity Center as well as that is seen once within the boundaries of the project. 44

ADVANCED DESIGN C | 45

GUILD STREET

Guild Street is a key component in the success of the project. Throughout downtown Aberdeen, automobile traffic has priority over pedestrian traffic. People entering the train and bus station exit onto a busy Guild Street. By limiting the vehicular traffic to one lane, it allows people to be the priority and allows an opportunity for a bike lane. To relate Guild Street to the proposed Trinity Center, Guild Street would be covered by a similar glass canopy system, providing shelter from the rain and allowing light to penetrate down onto the street. 46

CONCEPT

“DO NOT BE AFRAID OF YOUR SHADOW, IT IS A CONSTANT REMINDER THAT THERE IS LIGHT ALL AROUND YOU.”

The quote above was the inspiration for the USF chapel project. Shadows serve as a constant spiritual reminder that no matter the circumstance, there are better times to come. Shadows play an important role both inside and outside of the chapel.

SITE

The chapel is nestled into the south end of the site purpose of the shadows but also to shade the north half of the site. The north area of the site is a public courtyard for students, faculty, and visitors. The section of the project that extends along the east edge of the site is exclusively office space. The bulk of the building that extends along the south west side of the site houses the public and semi-public spaces (meditation spaces, worship spaces, etc.). 58

The courtyard was created to act almost as a secondary meditation space. The courtyard in sunken 5 feet into the Earth to create a unique relaxation space. The courtyard also houses small spaces within in to sever as added meditation areas if the meditation rooms are occupied.

MEDITATION MEDITATION SPACE EXTERIOR 66

The meditation spaces were taken in to great consideration during design. These spaces are located along the public courtyard. Because the courtyard is sunken into the ground, the meditation rooms sit higher above the public courtyard giving people within the space privacy. Each room has a private outdoor patio space. Because they open up to the north, there is plenty of shade available while still allowing for filtered daylight to come in.

AN AMERICAN CIRCUS MUSEUM | TAMPA, FLORIDA

FINAL MODEL 72

CONCEPT

The American Circus Museum is inspired by the structure, qualities, and experiences of the circus. The American Circus Museum was designed with the idea of knot tying. The idea steams from the fact that if there wasn’t rope, we might have the circus that we all know of today. The museum was thought of to be like a knot with masses moving in and out, through and around each other, much like tying a rope.

ADVANCED DESIGN A | 73

SITE

The project is situated on the site to create to entice people to visit. The project has a large entry plaza that leads into the museum. The main entrance (see site plan) is toward the south east corner of the project. To the left of the entrance area is the museum itself, to the right is the bookstore and café. The entrance was set up this way so that the café could be open without the museum needing to be open and so patrons could access the bookstore without having to purchase a ticket to the museum. Above the café and the bookstore is the acrobatics school that also serves as advertisement for passing cars and people.

CALLIOPE

PUBLIC PLAZA 74

The calliope is a musical instrument unique to the circus. It is an organ like instrument housed in a circus car. Back when the circus traveled by train and people came to the circus, one of the first things noticed was the music. The music produced by the calliope is specific to the circus. The plaza acts as an urban calliope with pipes coming out of the ground making music as people pass.

Due to the surrounding area, it made the most sense to place the entrance on the south side of the site. However, this means that the front of the project would always be in direct sunlight. The screen system shown reacts to people passing by. As patrons walk by the screen, the tiles open up. This not only creates visual interest for people outside, but for those inside as well. It also helps control how much light is let into the museum.

THINKING AND MAKING

JULY 5, 2016 Suicide bomber attacks a police station in Solo, Indonesia, killing himself. Central bank of Russia announces it will start buying the Chinese yuan in an attempt to diversify its foreign-currency reserves away from the Euro and the U.S. dollar and become less vulnerable to Western sanctions. At least seven people are killed and eight are injured after a helicopter carrryin Turkish Armed Forces personal crashes in Turkey’s northern Giresun Province. Dozens of petty criminals and alleged drug addicts die in the Philippines within a few days after Rodrigo Duterte took the presidency. Clinton Investigation: The FBI recommends, with numerous reservations about her actions, no charges be filed against Hillary Clinton over her emails. Cybersecurity software maker Check Point reports HummingBad malware has infected at least 10 million Android devices, mostly in China and India. Home Secretary Theresa May gets 165 votes after the first ballot of Conservative members of parliament to select a new Leader and the next Prime Minister. Iraqi Interior Minister Mohammed Salem Al-Ghabban says he has submitted his resignation. Al-Ghabban cited a lack of “coordination among security systems” demonstrated by Sunday’s bombings in Baghdad that killed over 200 people and injured at least 175 others. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán announces that the country will hold a referendum on October 2 where voters will get to choose whether or not to accept European Union-imposed quotas on the distribution of migrants. Protests occur in the city of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, U.S., after a man, Alton Sterling is fatally shot by a police officer. Suspected Allied Democratic Forces rebels hack nine people to death in the village of Oicha, Democratic Republic of the Congo. Iraqi forces, backed by U.S. airstrikes, advance north towards ISIL-held Qayyarah Airfield West south of Mosul. The United Nations reports a mortar attack on a camp for displaced Iraqis south of Baghdad kills three people, including two children, and injures 13 others, two critically.

JULY 5, 2016 Taylor went to the beach with her mother and sister. She just needed to get away from it all. Jack, Sean, and Patrick went to Clearwater, just to walk around. They just needed to get away from it all. Steve took Justin and his son out fishing even though he had thigns he needed to do. He just needed to get away from it all.

I was with them that day. I was with many more that day also. But these were my favorites.

AN OBJECT

This project began with an object. I chose to use the film camera. With a film camera, you don’t have endless attempts at one shot to get the perfect picture like a DSL camera. Shooting with film takes a lot of care, patience, and time. Developing the film is an extension of that process. It takes time and there are many steps that must carefully be done. The mechanics of the film camera are also unique in process. The drawings above were the first step in developing a final concept. They are diagrams of movement of all the little moving pieces on the film camera. The collage plays on the idea of how people need visual proof that things are real and exist. The camera is the best way to document proof. The collage plays on the idea that people use pictures as proof for things that may not be entirely real or accurate. 92

ADDITIONAL STUDY | 93

The final model branches off of the idea that an object so mechanical can capture such amazing life. Viewing the final model in certain views reveals moments of humanity while other views express the mechanics and process of the camera. 94

FINAL MODEL

The camera itself is suspended in a field condition of plexi glass to literally give the piece a feeling of suspense. The camera use is in fact broken and has clearly been dropped multiple times. The camera represents how fragile life can be. The plexi allows the camera to be suspended in midair, as if it were caught while falling. ADDITIONAL STUDY | 95

STATION HOUSE

This summer, I had the pleasure of working as an intern architect at Renker Eich and Parks Architects. Based in St. Petersburg, Renker Eich and Parks is an awarding winning small business certified business specializing in historic preservation. I spent most of my time assisting on the design of a project called Station House. Station House is a co-work space, with multiple offices rented to different businesses share a common floor. The project is 30,000 square feet. The project will begin construction later this fall. Communal spaces were taken in the special consideration with the expectation that the space can be rented out for events (weddings, banquets, speakers, etc.) though out the year.
