Preface This portfolio includes two series of fashion design works, three of which have been completed. Employing the optional courses I learned in the one-year postgraduate study, I complete the design. My postgraduate major is totally different from my undergraduate major, so this is the first time for me to have access to professional fashion design study. It is also my first time to complete the three design works independently.

background students, aiming to help students complete the fashion design independently with their imagination and practical ability and get understanding of the whole
design process. The requirement is to design the wearable clothes with unconventional materials, which occupy 70% of the total design materials. I get inspiration from two aspects in daily life and compose two proposals with two different materials.

MI SHENG Unconventional Material Fashion Design
The design inspiration is originated from the utilization of waste paper,
which is closely related to daily life. Paper is a kind of ancient materials. Early in the Western Han Dynasty, China has invented to use hemp fiber. Papermaking technology is one of the four great inventions in ancient China. Till now, paper has become one of the common materials in daily
life, including the paper for writing, for packaging and for cleaning. The form of paper products develops from the small piece of rough paper pulp to the current products of various density, thickness and shapes. The color transfers from sandal wood to various colors. Even a piece of paper

With the enrichment of paper products types and the development of the requirement of social life, the usage amount of paper products is constantly increasing. So does the consumption and waste. Each person will consume a lot of paper products everyday, including the tissue for cleaning, paper for printing and notebook for writing. We can easily find many paper products garbage in the dustbin. How to deal with these wastes has become a big problem in modern social life.
INSPIRATION
Due to the pressure of environmental deterioration and resource shortage, the circulating utilization of paper products has become the most efficient method to cope with the paper waste. In the recycling process, we can make it more artistic and interesting. The various forms of paper products, flexible expression methods and plasticity make it be beneficial to the creativity and expression of creative design. Meanwhile, the design works based on paper products own relatively high practical value, viewing value and artistic value.
INSPIRATION
With different paper products, ample creative techniques and unique ideas, designers have produced many exquisite works.
INSPIRATION
Due to the high-frequency emergence, the wide usage and abundant forms of paper product, it has naturally been one of the most common materials used by designers in creative design.
I got inspiration from the paper creative fashion design with the sense of sculpture.
INSPIRATION
I also find some common but interesting paper products in our daily life, such as the carton used for shipment, cardboard tube and paper cup, which frequently appear in our daily life but are abandoned once they lose their original value. Meanwhile, unlike the other paper products, they possess their unique styles, strong recoverability and utility.

PRODUCT PRESENTATION
The inspiration is originated from the waste use of paper. I blend in the separating A-line dress of Rococo and use the eco-friendly materials like the used carton and cardboard tube to fold, split, overlay, regroup and destruct to present the application of environmental protection concept in modern fashion design. I also use the color of white in the dress to balance the rough texture and highlight the modern sense.

Based on the first works, I complete the second one more skillfully and exquisitely.
DESIGN PROCESS
Compared with the first one, the material of the second dress is lighter. I replace the cardboard tube with paper cup to reduce the weight of the dress. Also, the dress is jumpsuit. I change the wrap-round shoulder strap to suspenders in order to make it convenient for dressing.

I participated in the closing ceremony of 2015 Shanghai International Fashion Culture Festival and the Award ceremony of FAD with the second dress.

PASTEL REFLECTION Unconventional Material Fashion Design
I take economic profit into consideration when using the unconventional material to do fashion design. What come to my mind in the first place is to design with the abandoned goods at home. When I searched the cabinet and storage room, I found many abandoned tapes, some of which were left by my parents, some were the listening materials of my middle school period and the others were music and appreciation works. They have been forgotten in the corner for a long time. Some has broken and some has become invalid. Moreover, we had no equipment to play the tapes. They occupied the space but if discarding them, I felt pity. Hence I decided to do creative design with them.

INSPIRATION
Tape is a kind of belt material carrying magnetosphere to record sound, image, figure and other signals. It is regarded as the carrier for the memory of an era, which has kept a history of 50 years, developing from the initial data storage to the main storage medium of music. However, it has been greatly shocked and affected by the new-type products like CD and digital products after the sales summit in 1980s. Currently, tape has gradually become a kind of collection in the market.
The tapes at my home are not enough. When observing the material and texture of tape, I connect in mind a similar one – roll film. Both of them are media and carrier to record sound and image. They also have similar color and can reflect the light. The texture quality of tape is close to rope and fabric, which is very beneficial to design. Besides

undergraduate study, I have many friends who are interested in photography, so I can collect some abandoned roll films.
INSPIRATION
Roll film, namely negative film or film, is a kind of imaging equipment. Since invented by George Eastman in 1880, it has been widely used in photography, film shooting and medical radiation picture. It is a good helper for us to record sound and image. Countless beautiful moments are set on the roll film. However, with the emergence of digital products, roll film gradually fades out from our life because digital products has occupied the market due to its convenience, low cost and easy preservation.

With the invention of new technologies, tape and roll film indeed gradually quit the arena of history, yet
some artists still insist on using tape and film. They enjoy the pleasure of printing the film, the irreplaceable picture quality of roll film and the

Life is like a drama and drama is life. Our life is connected by many scenarios and fragments. Whether it is intangible, glamorous, interesting or not, the moments have been recorded by tapes or films. Those scattered fragments gather together to
interweave life stream. So does fashion design. Every bit of inspiration and every glimmer of sewing form the beautiful and exquisite clothes, which bring us the feeling of beauty and pleasure.
INSPIRATION
My design is based on such kind of feeling and enlightenment. Using the abandoned tape and roll film, I employ the methods of intertwining, collage and interweaving to design a slim fit evening dress. The material itself can send out the metal flashing lights, which gives us the nostalgic and pretty feeling. The past events are presented via the reflection of light. It also arouses our cherish of the good old days and the imagination of future life.

The top, intertwined by roll films, expresses the emergence of the past memory. The flowing tape moves with the body, which represents that the past is gone. Meanwhile, the slightly shady feeling of the material gives us the sense of vague. The memory is not clear, just like the skimming over the surface.
Use the free draping to work out the sample of tight lining of clothes with calico and add the abandoned falsies in it. After the adjustment, I use the black and whippy gauze fabric to make the lining of the garment.

Select tapes with similar colors, cut them into several strips with same length to make the tassels to decorate the skirt hem. Put the roll films on the chest of mannequin, decorate it, find out the appropriate length and set aside the hem.

With several trials, I eventually complete the rudiment of my design works. To make it more integrated, I also design the headwear. In terms of the integral modeling, I adjust the chest decoration and tassels.
