Omnipresent in Gironde, water is present in an inﬁnite number of ways: ocean, estuary, lakes, rivers and waterways form an exceptional mosaic of landscapes and environments. Mentioning the Atlantic coast immediately brings to mind the image of a long beach of ﬁne sand, nestled into a sand dune. Here the seaside resorts have remained discreet and still highly attractive due to the charm of their 19th century villas, a reminder of holidays from another era.

Punctuated by intense maritime and river activity, the Gironde department also has multiple water sports on offer: surfing on the Atlantic waves, sailing on the coastal lakes and the Bassin d’Arcachon, fishing in the estuary and waterways, canoe trips through protected sites...the choice is huge! The ﬁrst naturist centre in the world was opened in 1950 in Montalivet. Naturists, infatuated by liberty, felt at home in Gironde in the three centres that welcome them along the Médoc coastline.

Behind the sand dunes, sheltered by the maritime pines, the great lakes can be found – Hourtin – Carcans – Lacanau and Cazaux – devoted to family swimming and all kinds of sailing activities: windsurﬁng, catamaran, kitesurf... The inland coastal areas are also home to numerous nature reserves, including the lagune de Contaut, large wooded marshland and the étang de Cousseau, an enchanting area reserved for pedestrians and cyclists only.

Classified Monument Historique in 1862, the Cordouan lighthouse, nicknamed the “Versailles of the sea”, is the most ancient lighthouse in Europe and the doyen of the French lighthouses still in activity. Built in 1584 on the site of the first lighthouse erected by the Moors of Cordoba (hence the name Cordouan) this 68m high lookout tower contains six Renaissance-style floors as well as a chapel dedicated to King Louis XIV.

Bassin d’Arcachon

Created by the wind and sea currents, the Bassin d’Arcachon is an inland sea measuring 155km2 inundated by the Atlantic Ocean since the Quaternary era, with its present shape dating from the 17th century.

Even if it has been a leading coastal tourist location since the 19th century, the Bassin d’Arcachon has nevertheless been able to preserve its natural heritage, part of which is integrated into the Parc naturel régional des Landes de Gascogne. The Bassin was dear to the hearts of the artist Toulouse-Lautrec and Jean Cocteau – among others! – who could often be encountered aboard a pinasse, traditional ﬂat-bottomed boat characteristic of the Bassin – but also on land, in the oyster-farming ports which have remained authentic to this day.

Subjected to the rythm of the daily tides, the landscape of the Bassin evolves continually: water moulds all the sites whether intended for oyster-farming production, for leisure or water sports or reserved for the protection of animal and plant life. The quality of the water in the Bassin d’Arcachon makes it the ﬁrst national producer of spats. Two oysters out of three that are eaten in France are raised in one of the Bassin’s 2500 oysterfarming concessions, subjected every day to the ebb and ﬂow of the Atlantic.

Further to the east surges the famous Île aux Oiseaux and its “tchanquée” cabins (on stilts, in Gascon, tchanqué means stilt) The channels and raised sediment deposits – known here as “esteys” and “crassats” – of the Leyre delta, nature reserve bordering the Landes de Gascogne forest, can be glimpsed.

One tradition that all the Girondins, often accompanied by family and friends who have come from afar, willingly adhere to: climbing up the 105m of the highest sand dune in Europe, the Dune du Pilat. You can only stand and wonder at the breath-taking wild beauty of the Bassin and its precious eco-systems: laid out in front of you is the Banc d’Arguin, a vast sand bank between the ocean and the Bassin where sailors and sea birds live together in harmony. Created from the Garonne and Dordogne rivers, the Gironde estuary is the largest estuary in Europe: 600km2 – with a width of 12m downstream, – an estuary with the look of the Mississippi, bordered by the vineyards of Médoc and the Cotes de Blaye and Bourg and sprinkled with numerous islands, inhabited or wild: Ile Nouvelle, Ile Verte, Ile de Patiras and île Margaux.

In constant movement due to the Atlantic tides, the estuary is a world in itself: in the marshes and humid prairies which border it live – and reproduce – an exceptional animal life: Storks, White Spoonbills, Harriers and Grey Herons, Otters... The Gironde navigational network comprises four speciﬁc zones: the Gironde estuary, the Garonne and the Garonne canal, the Dordogne and the Isle. Yoles and gabares, typical crafts used in the past by the boatmen for wine and coal trading have today been converted into pleasure boats. The “Deux Frères” gabare criss – crosses the estuary from the Bourg citadel to that of Blaye – built by Vauban – and also calls into the estuary islands. All along the banks of the estuary, “Mattes” or polders can be seen, which were reclaimed from the water during the 18th and 19th centuries during the important drainage works carried out by Dutch master tradesmen in order to plant grape vines on them. Parallel to extensive growing, two activities developed at the heart of the “mattes”: aquaculture farms and the production of rushes, used in viticulture.

For romantic souls the “Route de la Corniche Fleurie”, which runs along the right bank of the estuary between Bourg and Blaye, unveils its limestone cliffs where troglodyte houses nestle that are still lived in today. A gourmand stop is called for in order to try some white estuary shrimp, cooked in anise, the local speciality!

The mascaret ��

During the equinox high tides (April/ September), a long wave, the Mascaret, ﬂows up the estuary at nearly 30km/h inland. An extraordinary spectacle, this breaker proﬁts daredevil surfers as well as the spectators gathered in front of the small harbours of Vayres and SaintPardon, on the Dordogne.

Largest department in France - 10 725 km2 - Gironde has an exceptionally rich and varied natural heritage, that has been preserved. Extremely varied, the Gironde nature offers areas that are both common and rare to the curiosity of the walker: ocean, vines, forests, lakes and waterways compose an inďŹ nite number of landscapes; the grandiose panoramas of the Bassin dâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Arcachon, the estuary or vineyards stretching as far as the eye can see rub shoulders with a more secretive nature, the intimacy of which reveals itself round the bend of a walk in the pine forest of the Landes de Gascogne... Almost 4,200km of walking paths criss-cross the department, crossing all of the Gironde territories; the paths wind across the hillsides, along the waterways, into the heart of the vineyards; cycling paths use the old railway lines, take the coastal chain of sand dunes, bringing you as near as possible to the local heritage and traditions. Wherever they may be in the department, the walkers are always near to a forest, vines, a chĂ˘teau: the ideal opportunity to get to know the Gironde better and share the lifestyle of its inhabitants! Nature in Gironde lends itself to all desires: admiring, discovering, learning, rejuvenating... Alone, or as part of a group, independently or during guided visits, let yourself be surprised, seduced and captivated. Nature takes care of it all!

Situated on the border of the Gironde and Landes departments, the Parc naturel régional des Landes de Gascogne – which can be visited on foot, by mountain bike, on horseback or in a canoe – unveils the intimacy of the Landes de Gascogne forest and maritime landscapes, a large part of which has been cultivated by man since the 18th century.

A waterway snakes through the heart of the pine forest – or “pignada”, before flowing into the Bassin d’Arcachon. It is the Leyre, also known as the « little Amazon » as its vegetation is so luxurious: oak, ash and willow trees form a vast forest gallery, the queen of which is a majestic fern, the Royal Fern. Bordering the Leyre, vast humid zones are home to intense land and aquatic life: Dragonflies, Otters, Herons, Kingfishers, European Pond Turtle (protected species), and more. In order to understand how man has been able to create the Park while still respecting nature, you’ll have to visit the environmental discovery and awareness centres of Le Teich and Le Graoux.

Leyre Delta

Open to the public free-of-charge for independent or guided visits, the Espaces Naturels Sensibles de Gironde – Gironde nature awareness zones – host a legacy of great biological diversity: lagoons of glacier origin, sand dunes, salt marshes...so many fragile ecosystems conducive to captivating subjects for walks. The Parc ornithologique du Teich Espace Naturel Sensible reserved for attracting wild birds, the Parc Ornithologique du Teich is a favoured stop in the heart of the Leyre delta, on the Bassin d’Arcachon. Every year, several thousand migratory birds stop over in the heart of the Park’s 120 hectares. 260 species have been recorded – 80 of which nest on the site – that can be observed from the twenty observation huts, by walking along the different paths and circular routes marked out in the Park. At the entrance, the Maison de la Nature du Bassin d’Arcachon proposes numerous discovery activities as well as guided tours all year round.

The Domaine de Certes Salt marshes cultivated by man, salt pans and ﬁsh-rearing pens: the domaine de Certes marries together freshwater and salt water to the delight of the walkers who appreciate the beauty of striking maritime landscapes. The Etang de Cousseau This nature reserve, formed out of marshes and wooded dunes, has a concentration of exceptional plant and animal life, to be discovered only by walkers or cyclotourists, who follow an enchanting marked path.. The Lagunes du Gât-Mort Poignant remains of the ancient history of the Gironde Grande Lande, these lagoons of glacier origin are composed of forests and humid zones that can be discovered thanks to a circular route lined with observation hideouts. An invitation to take your time With a network of over 1,000km laid out for bicycles and mountain bikes, Gironde is in the leading pack of bicycle destinations in France.

Following old railway lines for the most part– some of the former stations having been converted into cafés, information and welcome centres for cyclotourists – the Gironde cycle paths lend themselves incredibly well to the discovery of the local heritage.

In Gironde, there are 941 monuments listed that are protected according to Historical Monuments legislation – 239 of which are classified as « Monuments Historiques » – among which exceptional sites such as the monolithic church of SaintEmilion, the Cordouan lighthouse, the Blaye citadel and the Uzeste collegiate church where the remains of Bertrand de Got, Pope Clement V can be found. In addition, 200 sites benefit from the department label “Gironde à fleur de pierre”, used to highlight monuments of great architectural interest.

All eras and all architectural styles are represented in Gironde: Gallo-Roman relics, medieval fortresses and 19th century coastal resorts exist alongside more contemporary realisations, such as the estate imagined by Le Corbusier in Pessac or the very futuristic Bordeaux magistrates’ courts. In Bordeaux, the 18th century is visible with the majesty of the neo-classical façades. In the Entre-deux-Mers and the Libournais, the bastides and towns of character – SaintEmilion, Saint-Macaire or the smallest community of France, Castelmoron d’Albret – can be admired. Also worth visiting are the ancient villages of la Réole and Bazas, as well as the Clémentin châteaux Roquetaillade and Villandraut, and the Cazeneuve château.

The Grand Théâtre

Bordeaux has preserved a remarkable civil and religious architectural heritage dating from its Gallo-Roman and medieval past: the Palais Gallien ruins, a 15,000-seat amphitheatre built in the 3rd century, ancient belfries such as the Porte Cailhau or the Grosse Cloche, etc. Three Bordeaux monuments belong to the UNESCO World Heritage list: the Cathédrale Saint-André and the Saint-Seurin and SaintMichel Basilicas. The medieval atmosphere can still be felt in the small, narrow streets of the Bordeaux old town, at the heart of the picturesque quarters of Saint-Pierre, Saint-Eloi, SainteCroix and Saint-Michel, which make up the largest preserved area in Europe. Bordeaux is called elegant; it is indeed thanks to the work undertaken by the great intendants of the 18th century, an era when the town prospered due to its trade with the French West Indies. The neo-classical façade of the place de la Bourse, the Grand Théâtre or the Palais Rohan, which houses the town hall, bear witness to the “golden century”, just like the mascarons, grimacing or comical stone faces that can be found on the pediments of the houses. The recent opening of a new tramway as well as the renovation of the quays signal Bordeaux’s current renewal, which is once again turned towards its river and its port districts, notably that of the Chartrons, where Bordeaux trading was born.

The Tour Pey Berland. A bell tower separated from the Cathédrale Saint-André, the tour Pey-Berland (Monument National) was erected in the 15th century, at the initiative of the Archbishop Pey Berland. The bell tower is home to an enormous 11,000kg great bell (1853) and three other bells (1869). From the summit of the tower there is a panoramic view over the town, its rooftops and bell towers. The Porte Cailhau The Porte Cailhau (Monument Historique) or Porte du Palais, was constructed in the 16th century to celebrate the victory of Charles VIII at Fornova (Italy) in 1495, in which the Cardinal d’Epinay, Archbishop of Bordeaux and part of the Bordeaux nobility participated.

The Pont de Pierre

The Grosse Cloche It is the belfry of the old Town Hall, one of the ﬂagship monuments of Bordeaux (Monument Historique). The porte, the base of which dates from the 13th century and the upper part from the 15th century, is made up of two towers linked by a central building.

The Cathédrale Saint-André The most important of the religious monuments of the town, the Cathédrale Saint-André (Monument Historique), was consecrated in 1096 by the Pope Urban II, who had come to preach the ﬁrst crusade. The Porte Royale (ﬁrst half of the 13th century), the Porte Nord at the extremity of the transept (middle of the 14th century) and the south door at the extremity of the same transept (end of the 13th-beginning of the 14th centuries) all present remarkable sculptures. The Monument aux Girondins

The Monument aux Girondins This symbolic monument, erected between 1894 and 1902 in the memory of the Bordeaux deputies decapitated in 1792, a show of loyalty to the Third Republic Government, forms a stunning sculptural ensemble. It comprises a 50 metre high column topped with a statue of Liberty breaking its chains and two remarkable fountains adorned with bronze marine horses symbolising the Triomphe de la République and the Triomphe de la Concorde.

The Flèche Saint-Michel Bell tower (classified Monument Historique) isolated from the Basilique Saint-Michel (Monument Historique classified in the UNESCO World Heritage list), constructed from 1473 to 1492. Highest bell tower in the South of France (Height 114.2m). The Église Notre-Dame The ancient Dominican chapel (classified Monument Historique) was built between 1684 and 1707 and impressively restored in 1982. Inside, the visitor is struck by the remarkable stonework of the organ gallery, which is prolonged by two balconies with harmonious curves. The quality of the ironworks contribute to its grandeur. . The Place de la Bourse Laid out from 1730 to 1755, following the plans of the father and son architects Gabriel, framed by the quays with uniform façades, the old Place Royale constitutes a magnificent architectural ensemble, recently restored (building classified Monuments Historique or inscribed in the Inventaire Supplémentaire des Monuments Historiques). The majesty of the façades as well as the variety of the sculpted decor make it one of the most typical realisations of architecture from the time of Louis XV. Page 28

The Allées de Tourny This promenade carries the name of Tourny (1690-1760), intendant of the Généralité de Guyenne, who, from 1743 to 1757 chose its layout. The creation of an underground car park in 1969 was the opportunity to carry out archaeological excavations which dug up part of the Roman Burdigala. The Palais Rohan Monument Historique, the Town Hall occupies the old Archbishop’s palace, built from 1772 to 1778 for the Archbishop Ferdinand-Maximilien de Mériadeck, Prince of Rohan.

The Grand Théâtre de Bordeaux This theatre (classiﬁed Monument Historique) is one of the most beautiful in Europe. Its construction was entrusted to the architect Victor Louis by the Maréchal de Richelieu. Finished in 1780, the Grand Théâtre has a neoclassical façade graced with a portico of twelve huge Corinthian style columns holding up an entablature, a balustrade and twelve stone statues depicting the nine muses and three goddesses Juno, Venus and Minerva. Inside, the peristyle, the monumental staircase, the auditorium, restored in 1991 in its original blue and gold colours, and the Grand Foyer, work of J. Burguet (ceiling by Bouguereau) are all of great beauty. Page 29

Arcachon’s little sister, the seaside resort of Soulac-sur-Mer is a concentration of some 500 white stone and red brick villas, decorated with wooden gables. At LacanauOcéan, where about a hundred early 20th century villas can be found, different architectural styles coexist: the entrepreneurs proposed standard houses, accompanied by a catalogue of adornments from which the customer made his choice!

In 1862, at a time when sea bathing was becoming fashionable, two native Bordeaux ﬁnanciers, the Péreire brothers, owners of the Compagnie des Chemins de Fer du Midi, bought the 400 hectares of the “mountain” (dune) of Arcachon. A casino and sumptuous villas were built there to accommodate a rich French and European clientele. The Ville d’Hiver d’Arcachon was born. If the “Moorish” casino is no longer there, the extravagant villas – a Gothic manor house here, a neocolonial house there – with names that are just as ﬂamboyant – Faust, Tolédo, Alexandre Dumas, Teresa, Bougainville... – are still intact, protected from the Atlantic winds by their green defences. In 1999, the medieval town of Saint-Emilion and all its jurisdiction – 8 communes – were classified in the UNESCO World Heritage list. It is the first time that a viticultural land has been classified as a “Cultural Landscape”, a privilege due to the perfect patrimonial conservation of the site, spared from contemporary vicissitudes.

Indeed it is difﬁcult to resist the charm of the old town, inhabited by centuries of religious, war and political history; wherever you look, harmony reigns; ochre tinged stones, the Romanesque tiled rooftops, the narrow paved streets: everything contributes to the splendour of the place. The birth of Saint-Emilion is due to a Breton monk, Aemilianus, who retreated to the forest of Combes, which covered the present location of the town, to found a hermitage. Joined by Benedictine monks, Aemilianus started the construction of an enormous underground church, which remains to this day the largest monolithical church in Europe.

The town really developed rapidly in the 12th century when Jean Sans Terre signed a charter allowing liberties and unrestricted traditions to the town which gave itself a new civil and military authority, the Jurade, which had the mission of surveying the quality of the wines. Bastides

and ancient villages

Blasimon, Cadillac, Créon, Libourne, Monségur, Pellegrue, Sainte-Foy-laGrande and Sauveterrede-Guyenne, these eight bastides are essential to the architectural landscape of the Entre-deux-Mers and the Libournais.

Built from 1255 (Sainte-Foy-La-Grande) to 1325 (Créon), these new towns, both strongholds and marketplaces, were created to mark the boundaries between the domains of the French and English sovereigns, obliged to live together after the attachment of the Duchy of Aquitaine to the English Crown in 1154.

With different personalities, the bastides nevertheless present identical layouts: an arcaded square surrounded by galleries called “cornières” or “couverts”, towards which the streets converge cutting at a right angle.

All the charm of these fortified towns lies in their respective peculiarities: Monségur, situated on a rocky spur, offers a magnificent panorama of the Dropt valley At Sainte-Foy-la-Grande, the magnificent half-timbered houses attract one’s attention. It is also very pleasant to wander under the arcades of Sauveterre-de-Guyenne or Libourne, the only bastide built on the right bank of the Dordogne.

The château de Villandraut constitutes a good example of defensive architecture of the 1300s and 1400s in Gironde, a troubled period marked by the Hundred Years War (1337-1453). Genuine fortress, built by Bertrand de Got – Pope Clément V – the walls of which would play host to the Pontifical Court in 1308/1309, this château would serve as a model to other Bazadais fortified constructions, including Roquetaillade, at Mazères. Erected in 1310, this castle is the archetype of medieval fortified château, just as it appears in history books and children’s stories; the ensemble consists of two fortified châteaux of the 12th and 14th centuries, both situated within the same walls. Its history has been marked by two important restorations, a particularly remarkable part of which was carried out Viollet-le-Duc in the 19th century.

From fortiﬁed castles to bourgeois residences, Gironde has cleverly adapted the art of building castles throughout the centuries. Whether built with the aim of pushing back the enemy, for imposing a statute or even for sheltering guilty loved ones, the Gironde châteaux all have one point in common: the white stone, which gives them a rare grandeur ...even down to the ruins, such as the Château de Rauzan. Fortunately, most of the châteaux of the department are still intact, preserved from the erosion of time by important successive restorations. That is why sometimes several styles coexist – medieval, Renaissance, Classical – within the same ediﬁce. That is the case of the Langoiran and Vayres Châteaux, whose French-style gardens descend towards the Dordogne.

The château de Cadillac Perched on a limestone peak, on the site of the old feudal château, the château (Monument Historique) was built and decorated from 1598 to 1620 by the first Duc d’Épernon, Jean-Louis de Nogaret de La Valette (1554-1642), under the influence of Henri IV. Property of the Navarre Kings, the Château de Cazeneuve,at Préchac, was the residence of King Henri IV and Queen Margot. In the Renaissance style, it possesses magniﬁcent Royal apartments with period furniture as well as large underground cellars and troglodyte caves. In the 18th century, the châteaux adopted a style known as Classical. They were no longer needed for protection, the emphasis was laid on the aesthetic, which is wonderfully illustrated by the Beychevelle, Malle and Mongenan Châteaux and even that of Bouilh with its superb neoclassical façade.

Initiated during the great monastic forest clearing phases, the construction of most of the religious ediﬁces of the department stretched from the 10th to the 13th centuries. These spiritual homes little by little attracted new populations and an intense rural life developed. Basilicas, cathedrals, abbeys, churches or modest chapels of varying degrees of splendour evoke the all-encompassing force of spiritual power over medieval society. Certain monasteries of Entre-deux-Mers – La Sauve-Majeure, built in 1079, Blasimon and Saint-Ferme around 1070 – scattered over all the territories, inviting the villagers to participate in the construction of churches and priories. Monks and laymen therefore built together, inspired by the Saintonge ediﬁces, as displayed by the richly decorated doorways of Blasimon, Castelviel, Fronsac, Guîtres, Moulis, Petit-Palais or that of the Sainte-Croix church at Bordeaux.

Little by little, time and man have contributed to the deterioration of the painted murals; however, very beautiful ones can be found in the Saint-Sauveur church in SaintMacaire and the Saint-Michel du Vieux Lugo church near to Belin-Beliet.

The Abbaye de La Sauve-Majeure

Even if Romanesque art predominates in Gironde, some ediﬁces also illustrate Gothic splendour: the cathédrale Saint-Michel in Bordeaux, the cathédrale Saint-Jean-Baptiste in Bazas, the Uzeste Collegiate church – where Pope Clément V lies – or the Saint-Pierre church of La Réole. This famous abbey (Monument national, classiﬁed in the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1998 as part of the Saint-Jacques de Compostelle pilgrimage routes), founded in 1079 by the Benedictine Gérard de Corbie, future Saint Gérard, in the middle of a vast forest, was a powerful land seigneury, controlling numerous priories in Spain and in England. It was developed due to the Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle pilgrimages for which it was an important stop. Three jacquaire ediﬁces are classed in the UNESCO World Heritage list: the Notre-Dame-de-la-Fin-des-Terres church in Soulac and the Abbaye de la Sauve-Majeure and also the Cathédrale Saint-Jean-Baptiste in Bazas. The Paris/Tours route (or Turonensis): from Pleine-Selve to Belin-Beliet, passing through Blaye, Bordeaux and Gradignan, this route would have been taken by Charlemagne, who came to bury Roland in Blaye and his companions at Belin-Beliet after the defeat at Roncevaux (August 778).

The Littoral route or the “route of the English” travelled along the Atlantic sand dune from Soulac – where pilgrims coming from England, Holland, Brittany and Normandy could be found – to Bayonne.

Le Verdon-sur-Mer

Ever since the year 1000, thousands of pilgrims gather at the relics of Saint Jacques, Christ’s apostle buried in Galicia, who has become the symbol of the reconquering of Spain by the Christians. Numerous pilgrimage routes cross France and notably the Aquitaine before coming together at Ostabat on the Spanish border. In Gironde three great historical routes pass through: the Paris route, the Vézelay route and the Littorale route. Other secondary routes have been used to carry the pilgrims including the Libournais and Entre-deux-Mers routes, the Graves, Sauternais and Landes Girondines routes. Military Resisting enemy invasions capable of reaching Bordeaux by the Gironde estuary was one of King Louis XIV’s priorities during the 17th century.

The citadelle de Blaye

The architect Vauban was entrusted with the mission of erecting a line of fortifications along the estuary; three defensive bolt holes were built: the first situated at Blaye, on the right bank of the estuary was in the shape of a citadel; the second came out of the ground on the île Pâté, in the middle of the estuary. As for Fort-Médoc, it completes the set on the left bank of the estuary. The three forts could cross their fire and prohibit all traffic on the estuary. In the end these three fortresses were only used once, in 1814 at Blaye, during an attempted invasion by the English, before being downgraded to “strong places” by the army in 1934. Today, in a totally peaceful manner, artists and craftsmen and women bring life to the citadelle de Blaye which has preserved all its beauty. The fortresse of île Pâté still stands proudly in the estuary; at the entrance to the fort de Cussac-Fort-Médoc, the porte royale and its sculpted pediment adorned with the sun – emblem of Louis XIV – still makes a strong impression. Contemporary The Frugès estate

During the 20th century Bordeaux and Gironde have experienced real innovations in architecture. At Pessac, the Frugès estate (19241926), a work of Le Corbusier intended for workers’ housing, was the ﬁrst experiment of a global habitat theory bringing together urbanism, construction techniques and aesthetic criteria. In the thirties and forties, the “Art Deco” style enjoyed a certain success in Bordeaux under the impetus of the Mayor at the time, Adrien Marquet. The modern lines of the Bourse du Travail, the Judaïque swimming pool or the stade Chaban-Delmas blend in with the classicism of the town. Built between 1994-1998, the Tribunal de Grande Instance de Bordeaux – the Bordeaux Magistrates’ Court – surprises with its silhouette made up of seven wooden pods – housing the courtrooms – sitting on rough concrete cushions.

Since the 80’s new wine storage rooms and prestigious fermenting rooms have been built in the vineyards, sometimes carried out by leading contemporary architects (Ricardo Boﬁll for the wine storage rooms of Laﬁte-Rothschild). Some of them copy the architectural models from the neoclassical past, others are more innovating (PrieuréLichine, Pichon-Longueville-Baron).

With its 120,000 hectares of vines, 57 appellations, 13,000 wine growers and 8,000 wine-growing châteaux, the Gironde vineyard is the oldest vineyard of ﬁne wines in the world and has the most wide-ranging Appellations of Origin in France. Gironde has already been living to the rhythm of the viti-vinicultural culture for 2000 years: the ﬁrst vine stock were planted in the 1st century AD by the Bituriges Vivisci, a Celtic tribe that founded Burdigala (Bordeaux); we owe it to Ausone, Latin poet born in Bordeaux in 310, to have contributed to the notoriety of the Bordeaux wines for which he was, in his time, the favoured ambassador. The Bordeaux wines have the peculiarity of being the fruit of a blend: the musts of different grape varieties – of different ages – of a property are blended together, as opposed to the “vintages” practised in other wine-growing regions. Today, the Bordeaux vineyard stretches over 500 of the 542 communities of the department and produces a complete offer: red wines, dry whites, moelleux and liquoreux (sweet) white wines, rosés, clarets, Crémant (sparkling) wine and Fine Bordeaux eau-de-vie.

The Médoc wine road

Instituted in 1461 by Louis XI, the Bordeaux parliament reunited all the local wealthy people. It was the members of Parliament who would develop the vineyards during the 17th and 18th centuries, establish the vintages – the first Grand cru (great vintage) would be the Château Haut-Brion, in Pessac and found the first “Châteaux de vin”. Even if there are some older residences and châteaux listed (Yquem and its fortified 15th century building, the Château de la Salle at Saint-Genès-deBlaye and that of la Rivière at Fronsac, both from the 16th century), most of the viticultural villages originate from the 18th century.

Top of the list is the chartreuse, bourgeois country house, single-storey and built very long, the model of which spread out over all the Gironde wine-growing regions, such as the châteaux Beychevelle and Cissac – built by Victor Louis – in Médoc, and the Château Bonnet, at Grézillac in the Libournais.

Certain important viticultural owners have preferred more opulent residences to the chartreuses, as shown by the Palladian façade of the Château Margaux as well as the central pavilion – inspired by the Trianon – of the Château Haut-Sarpe, at SaintEmilion. It was during the second half of the 19th century, when viticultural prosperity was reaching its peak, that the châteaux and mansions, of varied architectural styles inspired by the past centuries – medieval, Gothic, Renaissance, Neo-Tudor... – were built – or renovated.

If the Château Laroque, at SaintEmilion is a good example of Second Empire style –wrought iron railings, statues and balustrades, multiple windows – other viticultural properties adopted more exotic inﬂuences: LouisGaspard d’Estournel nicknamed “the Maharadjah of Saint-Estèphe” – his wines would be exported as far as India – had Asian pagodas added to the roof of his château, Cos d’Estournel.

Numerous museums and eco-museums are dedicated to the world of wine and viticultural trades. At Montagne, near to Saint-Emilion, the écomusée du Libournais proposes, in an area of 5000m2, the discovery of the civilisation of vines and wine, from its origins to today.

Several winemaking châteaux have put the emphasis on art: Mouton Rothschild, at Pauillac, presents, in the setting of its museum “Du vin dans l’art”, an exceptional collection of labels (some realised by Picasso, Braque, Cocteau, Miró...) as well as ancient objects linked to winemaking, some of them 3000 years old. The château Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, possesses a very important collection of ancient glasses, part of which dates from the ﬁrst century of our era. As for the Château d’Arsac, it houses an exceptional permanent collection of Contemporary Art. The parks and gardens that surround the châteaux also offer precious treasures, as reﬂected by the botanic garden of the Château de Mongenan, at Portets, which has gathered together almost a thousand varieties of roses, tinctorial and medicinal plants.

Sporty epicures? The Marathon du Médoc takes place every 2nd Saturday in September. 42.195 kilometres to be run through the Médoc vines, and with almost as many tasting stops thrown in! In order to welcome you better, a certain number of winemaking properties and cooperative wineries have adhered to the « Vignobles et Chais en bordelais® », charter, thus committing themselves to respecting certain conditions for visits: visits guided by a qualified person, welcoming notices outlining the visiting and tasting conditions and the hygiene and safety conditions which comply with the current regulations. Even if it offers multiple culinary variations, the Gironde cuisine is above all a simple and authentic cuisine which follows the seasons and benefits from a unique privilege: the possibility of accompanying each course with a different wine. A Sauternes will accentuate the finesse of a foie gras, a Saint-Emilion will reveal the flavour of a sea lamprey; fish and seafood marry together exceptionally well with an Entre-deux-Mers or a dry white Graves and we could not imagine depriving the cep mushrooms of the excellent company of a Médoc!

Come to Bordeaux for Bordeaux Fête le Vin and Bordeaux Fête le Fleuve in June – alternating every other year – Novart in November and Icronos, the international archaeological film festival every two years. In Pessac, the Festival du film d’Histoire brings together, in the month of November, historians and the general public for film projections, conferences and debates for a week.

From June to September are held the « Scènes d’été en Gironde ».
