Keys

With many Greenways and Cycle Routes, the department of Manche has 1,000 km of special trails for cycling with family or friends. Discover the untouched countryside, flourishing nature, outstanding architecture, the D-Day landing beaches and other historic sites...

Services

Far from the bustle of the highways, the 230 km of Greenways run through the heart of the department. These disused railway tracks and towpaths are also open to walkers, horse riders and horse-drawn vehicles.

The 37 Cycle loops will take you through the most picturesque sites in the department. All these tours are signposted, graded according to difficulty and about 20 kilometres long.

This brochure contains maps for each area, descriptions of the routes and the places of interest, and a list of services within easy reach of the trails.

If you feel like leaving the beaten track and adding a touch of originality to your trip, Manche Tourisme has a reserve of safe unmarked routes that link to the basic network.

Access to the Greenways

By train: bicycles are allowed aboard many trains. The train stations of Avranches, Carentan, Cherbourg, Coutances, Pontorson, Saint-Lô and Vire are the principal gateways to the cycle trails.

By boat: no restrictions on cycling equipment.

By car: There are car parks throughout the network (see map). Please do not park in front of the gateways to the Greenways as this will prevent the emergency services and maintenance services from carrying out their tasks.

Area A From Cherbourg to Rocheville: Greenway This link between Cherbourg and Rocheville, the end of the Cotentin Greenway, has a fairly large height variation (a total of about 240 m). It is marked along low traffic secondary roads up to the Ravalet castle at Tourlaville. From there, the port and the city centre are within easy reach using the cycle lanes provided. The Cycle Route link uses secondary roads with little traffic. Motor vehicles and cyclists are requested to share the road.

TOURIST INFO: Cherbourg Cherbourg is a fascinating port city with plenty to offer at the tip of the Cotentin Peninsula. Discover a historic city with pretty walks, monuments, parks and a truly magnificent harbour.

Cherbourg-Octeville : CitĂŠ de la Mer

Ravalets Castle Park in Tourlaville: This beautiful Renaissance castle in blue schist was restored at the end of the 19th century by HervĂŠ de Tocqueville who also created the landscape park. Ravalets Castle Park in Tourlaville

Valognes Valognes has been designated along with Bricquebec and Saint-Sauveur-Le-Vicomte as a Town of Art and History. This title reflects its wealth of heritage spanning 2,000 years of history. Town houses, Museums, churches, Roman thermal baths and wash houses are just some of the priceless architecture to be visited.

Area B From Bricquebec to Barneville-Carteret: Greenway and cycle routes This section of the network links to the seaside resorts of Portbail and Barneville-Carteret via the Cotentin Greenway. Enjoy a stop off in the charming market towns of Bricquebec and Saint-Sauveur-Le-Vicomte as you travel through the famous Cotentin bocage. The Greenway then heads out to the west coast. The trail links up with the Portbail to Barneville-Carteret Cycle Route.

Note: At Portbail, the road along the coast (GR 223 - over 300 m) is covered by the sea during periods of high tides (above coefficient 85).

TOURIST INFO: Bricquebec This Town of Art and History has plenty of museums and castles to visit.

Saint-Sauveur-Le-Vicomte Visit Saint-Sauveur Forest, the last remaining part of a woodland that once covered much of the Cotentin Peninsula. Discover Jules Barbey d’Aurevilly, a 19th century French writer and critic, at the Museum dedicated to his life.

Saint-Sauveur-le-Vicomte: the Castle

Religious heritage Take a brief detour via the 16th church at Canville-la-Rocque to admire its wall paintings (2 km from the greenway via D 903 and D 147 roads) or stop off at Portbail to visit the 11th century church Notre-Dame (classified as a historical monument) and its 4th century Baptistry.

Portbail – Barneville-Carteret The trail runs past the natural sites of Cape Carteret and the Hatainville Dunes, the latter being the largest group of dunes in the department.

Standing over 80 metres high, they conceal ancient cliffs of over 70,000 years old.

Area C From La Haye-Du-Puits to Carentan: Greenway This Greenway crosses the Regional Park of the Cotentin and Bessin Marshes. Contemplate the wild birds and the fens as you cycle along the trail.

Area I From Carentan to La Meauffe: Greenway The Vire and Taute canal, between Carentan and St-Jean-de- Daye, is closed until the end of 2009 for cleaning and masonry work. By bicycle, take the signposted shared road link for about forty kilometres, across the marshes. On foot or horseback, obtain information from the Carentan Tourist Office (see More information).

Area M From Vire to Sourdeval: Greenway Leaving Vire, the Greenway to Mont-Saint-Michel Bay links the departments of Calvados, Manche and Orne.

Running along the disused railway from Vire to Fougères, this trail is the safest way to travel to Mont Saint-Michel. The first leg crosses the dales and the beautiful countryside of Mortain.

TOURIST INFO: The disused Vire – Fougères railway The line was designed in the 19th c. by the talented Fulgence Bienvenüe. The terrain was quite steep in some places and presented plenty of problems for planners and builders. Cutting his way through the numerous foothills, with the newly-invented detonator and dynamite, Bienvenüe was able to create an elegant railway line through the countryside.

Area N From Sourdeval to Saint-Hilaire-Du-Harcouët: Greenway This Greenway crosses a verdant, rugged landscape on the way to Mont-Saint-Michel. At the southern end of Manche, part of the Greenway links Les Loges-Marchis to Fougères in the Ille-Et-Vilaine Department.

TOURIST INFO: Mortain Waterfalls Enjoy the view from the great waterfall just 1 km south of Mortain. An unforgettable view of the waters of the Cance cascading down 20 metres through a ridge of Armorican sandstone. Access to the panorama has been made easier with the installation of steps leading down to the river.

At the foot of the town centre a small waterfall opens the view to a verdant countryside.
