Pays Touristique de Morlaix Di scove r y Gu id e 20 0 8 / 0 9
The Pays Touristique of Morlaix is Brittany with a difference. Everything here is bigger, grander: its countryside with the
Mounts of Arrée and the Parish Closes and its seaside with the
extraordinary Bay of Morlaix extending along the wild coast of
the Finistère Tregor; its towns such as Morlaix itself with its unique architectural heritage or Guerlesquin, a “little town of character”,

inland, and Carantec and Locquirec on the coastline. Some say that there is just more Brittany here …

The ARMORIQUE REGIONAL N AT U R E PA R K
The Mounts of Arrée
Three communes in the Pays Touristique are members of the Armorique Regional Nature Park: Plounéour-Ménez, Le CloîtreSaint-Thégonnec and Guerlesquin. The park includes the exceptional nature areas of the département: Mounts of Arrée, cliffs of Crozon, Ushant archipelago. Within the scope of protecting and enhancing its natural and cultural heritages, the Armorique Regional Nature Park has opened museums, ecomuseums, or “houses” as places to meet and understand the balance and diversity in the landscapes, the ecology, the economy and the culture of the region.
A wild area, of mists, peat-bogs and moors, of small dense
woods, of grass running downwind … Easily accessible, the peaks of which are called locally “the Mountain”, either sharp rocky
spurs or deserted rolling hills, offer vast viewpoints over the large central peat-bog – the legendary location of the door to Hell –
and on the low-lying fields and hills that stretch to the faraway sea. Scattered with rivers, lakes and villages nestled in groves,
built in schist, granite or sandstone, the “Monts d’Arrée” conceal the sources of the rivers Aulne, Elorn, Penzé, Queffleuth and
Douron, which run across the Trégor or the Léon before flowing into the wide open salty waters. The majestic and extensive
landscapes, the ever changing sky, the rough windy rainy winters and often hot summers, create here a fascinating atmosphere.
Roc’h Trévézel
From the top of the peaks of Roc’h Trévézel the landscape uncovers for dozens of kilometres: towards Morlaix and the sea or towards the lake at Brennilis. The wind blows here like in the open sea and gives a similar feeling of freedom. One should come here in all weathers: emotion and exceptional light guaranteed.
Le Cloître-Saint-Thégonnec
The eye is caught on arriving at Le Cloître-Saint-Thégonnec by the majestic statues on the village square: those of the wolves well deservedly honoured by the commune through the museum dedicated to them, and also the statues by Alain Milan strangely resembling those on Easter island. It is a quiet place where one goes from street to street, house to house and square to square in no time as the village is self-centred, giving it a homely atmosphere.

Moors of the Cragou
Nature reserve since 1986. After several decades of neglect, the moors and peat-bogs of the Cragou, where anybody in the old days could gather rough grass or send their cattle to graze, tended to become overgrown, giving way to common plant species. The introduction of Dartmoor ponies and cows from the Landes onto the site has restored the upkeep of the moors, and ensured the preservation of rare species of plants and animals. Bretagne Vivante-SEPNB (Society for the Study and Preservation of nature in Brittany) organizes nature outings, by day … and by night! Night of the wolf, or of the bat , how’s that?
Le Relec Abbey
Deep peace, silence and beauty … The abbey of Le Relec, standing in the shade of hundred-year-old trees, was founded in the 12 th century by

Cistercian monks, eager to f ind, isolated from the rest of the world, the purity of the original evangelical message. These faith activists had their life governed by the rhythm of study, manual work and prayers and they became, thanks to donations after donations, the owners of an huge estate in the Mounts of Arrée. In order to colonize this land, they set up an original system, the “quevaise”, which has left traces still visible today in the landscape, as well as in local people’s attitudes: a house, a yard and an acre of land to clear for cultivation, (about V ha) were given for life to the eldest child of families in exchange for one seventh of the wheat harvest. The Mounts of Arrée thus became crisscrossed by a network of small fields reclaimed from woods and moors while the occupants, who practically owned their land, developed a certain sense of independence … The French Revolution was fatal to the abbey,
for the neighbouring houses. Between 1993 and 2006, the “Abati ar Relec” association has brought some life back into these old restored stone walls by organizing concertsexhibitions, workshops and nature outings. Today, the abbey of Le Relec has become a public establishment of cultural cooperation, in order to emphasize the exceptional site and allow Le Relec to resound in a delicious harmony of nature and culture.

Saint-Thégonnec
The biggest and richest parish close in Léon. Its construction, a series of successive enlargements followed the different stages of prosperity linked to the canvas industry particularly active in Saint-Thégonnec, and stopped with the decline of the same at the beginning of the 18th century. The ossuary shelters a very moving Entombment with almost full size characters.
Plougonven
A real “book of stone”, the Calvary of this parish close is one of the largest and oldest in Brit tany. Almost a hundred figures are sculpted here in “kersantite” stone to tell the painful Passion of Christ, for the enlightenment of the often illiterate congregation.
Plounéour-Ménez
At the bottom of the Mounts of Arrée, the parish close of Plouneour-Ménez tower up in the village centre where you can see overhang wing houses called “apoteis”. These houses were often occupied by weavers. Hard climate and poor soils of the Mountain has favoured linen activity that got to the farmers supplementary resources absolutely essential for their surviving.
Plourin-Lès-Morlaix
The parish close had been demolished during the French Revolution. In the ossuary outdoor statues show us the using of polychromatic during the construction of the parish close. Inside the church ten side chapels open onto baroque reredos with columns, statues and paintings. The village combine contemporary and ancient architecture. A prehistoric stele and a thousand year old yew confirm the oldness unity of the village.
Saint-Jean-du-Doigt
Saint-Jean-du-Doigt owes its name and fame to its precious relic: Saint John the Baptist’s finger kept here since the 15th century. The sanctuary holds, besides the church and its tower with open galleries, two charnel houses from the 15th and 17 th centuries, the monumental fountain of the Finger (17 th century), and an oratory (16 th century) where Mass was said on the days of the “Pardon de la SaintJean”. It is still celebrated at the end of June, by a long ceremony with the salute to the banners, Mass, walking of a lamb held by a little “Saint-John”, and lighting of a bonfire called a “tantad”.
If you move away from the sea, you will discover near Penzé river, the ruins of the Penhoat castle. (13th century). Two high towers rest on at the bottom of moats. We can imagine the size and majesty of the original building which was fi rst. But sometimes some lords were welcomed at Penhoat Castle. Look after your children, towers are dangerous!
Linen The parish closes are testimonies of the linen trade that once flourished in the region.
Valley of the Queffleuth In the valley, remains of this activity can be visited. Access: on the Morlaix-Carhaix road from

A “kanndi” was used to bleach
A conjunction of influences contributed to the springing up, in North
the thread before weaving the
Finistère, of an exceptional series of monumental groupings, the
parish closes: religious devotion stimulated by the Catholic Counterreformation, marked in Brittany by the Celtic tradition of worship of the dead, economic prosperity linked to the manufacture and
trade of linen canvas, a baroque style spreading along land and sea
trading routes, rivalry between neighbouring villages … the imposing architecture of the parish close with its Calvary and its ossuary
enforces the solemnity of a faith moderated by tenderness and
colourful fantasy as shown by the painted altarpieces, covered with naive statues and angels trimmed with grapevines. Standing as a
reference for spiritual elevation, the parish closes combine surprisingly the trading of the dead with living humanity.

Morlaix Lying at the bottom of a deep valley with its sheltered harbour,
ha t b e t ter w ay to enjoy the town than to s tro ll al o ng i t s narrow streets? The small village that was built in the 10th century, at the foot of a feudal castle, between two rivers and nestled at the far end of the estuary began to feel cramped within its thick ramparts as early as the 13th century. Consequently, people began building houses on the sides of three hills with slopes so steep that coaches and carts could only negotiate them crosswise. Water and pedestrians prefer more direct paths, and use the narrow streets with furrowed steps, alongside terraced gardens, called “combots” in Morlaix, with their high walls overflowing with flowers or exotic plants well adapted to the mild climate. The rampar ts o f the old walled town are still visible “rue des Vieilles Murailles” and “rue de l’Hospice”. Above Saint-Mathieu’s church, the remains of a tower in Daumesnil park testify of the former castle dismantled at the end of the 16th century after the wars of the League. A superb view over Morlaix and the narrow streets leading to the viaduct, on both sides of the town can be enjoyed from here. The “Théâtre de la Corniche” Company organises in the evenings, theatrical guided tours “les Venelles de l’Histoire”, with new themes every year.
Morlaix, was for centuries the commercial nerve centre
of all the surrounding farming activities: linen canvas factories,
wheat mills, paper mills, oil mills, trade in horses, butter, bacon, cider … All the rich merchants and merchant shipowners lived
in Morlaix and it was in Morlaix that were recruited dangerous corsair crews, swift to plunder any enemy boats, the cargoes of which where then sold on the quays. The incredible
architectural richness of the town is the consequence of this
bustling trade: maisons à Pondalez (quite unique old houses!) timbered houses, 17 th century stone houses, steep narrow streets, terraced gardens, etc. One of the most beautiful architectural heritages in Finistère! > Morlaix Museum, House of Duchesse Anne > Morlaix Theater

Most streets and squares of the town centre are lined with corbelled timbered houses from the 15 th and 16th centuries. A few have the unique architectural features of the “maisons
A wonderful Italian-style theatre
Interest for cultural centres and heritage arose in France in the 19th century. Thanks to the very generous legacy of Paul-Ange de Guernisac, Morlaix was able to open a museum at the Jacobins Convent and build a magnifi cent Italian-style theatre, all in red velvet and baroque décor. Don’t miss the special opening days of the Theatre in July and in August!
à Pondalez”. Magni f icent s tone houses of the 17th century (along the harbour, rue Longue) testify of the later building activity of the town’s rich merchants. The harbour and Tobacco Factory were built in the 16th century to counter the decline of the linen industry. Beautiful houses with wrought-iron balconies were built when economic activity resumed in the19th century and during the urban reorganisation which took place while the viaduct was being erected.
If people come from Lannion, Brest and even Quimper to do their shopping in Morlaix, it is because they enjoy its original shops that can be found nowhere else, particularly in Ange de Guernisac street, so characterful and in Allende square surrounded by its century old buildings. In fact, the whole town centre deserves exploring on fo o t: a shop, a de tail o f old architecture, a narrow street inviting you to go up it, etc. On Saturdays, the market in Morlaix is worth the detour: stalls spread out all over the town centre, shaded by exceptional architecture. An atmosphere greatly appreciated both by locals and visitors alike.
The viaduct
When contemplating the imposing massive work, one almost forgets that its only function is to allow trains to get across the valley. Although this was, for a commercial town, a crucial function which was thus appreciated by its inhabitants of the 19 th century who clearly demanded their railway.
A harbour in the heart of the town
Priories, organs and churches
Three hills, three priories set up in the 12th century: the churches of SaintMathieu, (in the chapel, contemporary art exhibitions), Saint-Melaine, close to the harbour, Saint-Martin, up on the hill, host -as does the church in Ploujean - organs from the 17th and 18th centuries, making on of Morlaix the Breton capitals of historic organs! Up until the 17 th centur y, o ther communities built convents still visible around the town. The Jacobins convent, founded in the 12 th century, thanks to the liberalities of the Duke of Brittany, holds the oldest church of the town. Temporal and spiritual joint richness attracted to Morlaix many sculptors and silver and gold smiths: painted wooden statues in the churches, among which a rare 14th century Opening Virgin in SaintMathieu, sculptures on the wood panelled houses, liturgical objects.

“MAISONS à PONDALEZ” or “L ANTERN HOUSES”
Strange houses adorn the town centre of Morlaix. These rich timbered and corbelled dwellings are characterized by a spiral staircase rising in their midst. The two par ts of the buildings, one on the street side and the other on the backyard side are joined by galleries called “pondalez”, lit by lantern windows. These architectural features are the only ones of their kind.
Right in the centre of the town, the harbour thrived commercially from the 15th century, allowing the very lucrative development of the trade of linen, woven and processed in the hinterland. This trade was constantly disturbed by privateer forays which reached their peak in the 18 th century when the English, in retaliation against Colbert’s protectionism, ceased to buy fine linen. The arrival of the railway (1864) followed by the development of road transport finally took over from the transport of goods by sea, leaving space for a fine yachting activity. When embarking from Morlaix harbour for boat excursions, you will follow the long narrow wooded channel of the river of Morlaix, before reaching the magnificent opening of the estuary onto the Bay.

Locquenole The village
A lovely village nestled on the side of the river. It shelters a magnificent Roman church, among the oldest in Brittany (the capitals and the nave are from the 11th century; the steeple dates from the 17 th C.). Between Plougasnou and Locquirec two coast roads, interrupted by a foray inland, uncover one of the most beautiful and wild coasts of Brittany. The coastline, mostly free from any construction, is like an almost 90 me ter high wall plunging down toward the sea and the beaches. The moor vegetation is stif fened and flattened by winds against the slopes of the coastline. The t wo coastal roads offer different stops where you can enjoy the quietness and the immensity of the landscape. They break of f suddenly to direc t visitors towards the hinterland. From Le Prajou (parking recommended), access to Trobodec, a deep little valley leading to a beach. There, a mill with its large wheel keeps an eye on a couple of “highland cattle” in charge of the maintenance of the site … A few c ables’ leng th away from Trobodec, the sight of Beg ar Fri (the tip of the nose), a rocky vertical spur, seems to cleave through the sea like the bow of a ship. There are stairs on the side to go down to the sea. When you are at the top you have the strange sensation of being on an island. Nearby, the bookstorepub “Caplan Co” is an amazing place where one can read books, take a break and enjoy the landscape. An invitation to reading.
Locquirec
Between a turquoise stretch of sea and the Channel, a beach of fine sand and a small harbour form an unusual peninsula. This is Locquirec, a charming resort situated at the boundary of Côtes d’Armor, facing Plestin-Les-Grèves. From the harbour, coastal paths give access to Castle and Raven points or lead to the White island and the mouth of the river Douron.
Plouégat-Guerrand
Between Lanmeur and Plouigneau, Plouégat-Guerrand is an ancient cattle market village as the developments of the town square attest it. The town hall was an hospital in the 17 th century. The gradual, a precious manuscript of 615 pages dating from 1693 is on display in Saint-Egat church. Discovered in 1990 in the attic of the rectory of Lanmeur, this book illuminated by a local copyist priest was restored by the association for the safeguarding of PlouégatGuerrand’s heritage.
The crypt of Lanmeur
Right in the centre o f L anmeur, St Mélar’s church shelters a Roman crypt (11th century). The arches of the building rest on pillars some of which, which are thicker, show prominent contours: they might be reused ancient Roman columns. Allow 0,20 € for the time switch.
The Beaumanoir style
This 15th century Gothic style is characterized by a gable wall
reinforced by buttresses in order to support the bell tower (thus
called bell-wall), a round turret staircase leaning onto one of
the buttresses of the bell-wall,
a chevet with juxtaposed gables replacing the usual semi-dome and allowing to open high
windows that bathe in light the
choir and the nave. At least one of
these elements is quite frequently found in the churches of Tregor.
Guerlesquin, Little town of character This little town of character forms a long narrow square. The houses lined up on each side border the square and protect it, like a shelter against the outside world. Moreover, its architecture is most surprising: since the 15th century the architectural harmony of the town is given by the choice of materials used (granite cut in huge regular stones), the proportions of the buildings, the alignment of house fronts and roofs ... Noble houses with 15th to 17th century turrets, cornices and dormer windows blend harmoniously with simple houses, separated from each other by carriage
entrances. In the centre are regrouped the major monuments of the town, witnesses of exchanges and power: the Présidial, an old jail turning its most warlike side to the village entrance, the church, the covered market and the battle field square where the militias used to train. Exhibitions in the covered market hall from June to September, a lively market on Mondays, antique fair, Bouloù Pok world championship ... The importance and quality of the ac tivities proposed today make Guerlesquin a dynamic town to live in all year round.

Within its permanent exhibition, it introduces you to the wolf from the caves in Font-de-Gaume, to those in the legends and tales and from Brittany and elsewhere. You will learn the peculiar habits of this animal for a long time associated with satanic customs, before being rehabilitated by novelists such as Jack London or Kipling. A

Literally “meat and stuffing”, the Kig ha Farz is a traditional hotpot based on local products: the meat (middle rib, bacon, shin of pork, top side of beef…) with vegetables (green cabbage, carrots, turnips, onions…) is served with buckwheat stuffing boiled with the stew, but apart, in a tied-up canvas bag. There are several ways of serving this authentic dish from north Brittany, the most gourmet, though perhaps not the lightest, consisting of adding “lipig” (melted butter with shallots). M O R L A I X – M O N T S D ’A R R ÉE “MORLAIX – MONTS D’ARRÉE” is the name of the Mountain-biking area of the Pays touristique de Morlaix. It offers a 180 km network over 9 trails (9 to 31 km long) of variable diffi culty (classified by colour, the same as ski runs). The network crisscrosses the Queffleuth and Jarlot valleys and the protected moorland of the Cragou nature reserve as far as the crests of the Arrée Mounts. Departures are from different places, but it is possible to reach the network from Morlaix town centre through the green path (the old Breton railway network). From the old station of Coatélan, situated in the commune of Plougonven, you will start by following the green path linking Morlaix to Carhaix, to reach the lands of the Regional Nature Park of Armorique If you choose to leave from the site of the abbey of Le Relec in the commune of Plounéour-Ménez, first pay a visit to the abbey-church, a listed historic building, before setting off towards the crests of the Arrée Mounts. 3 trails are available from here, somewhat difficult, they go through beautiful little villages of traditional houses. Once on the summit of Roc’h Trédudon (385 m) and of Roc’h Ar Feunteun (372 m), make a halt to admire the multiple panoramas. In clear weather, the bays of Morlaix and of Roscoff reveal themselves to your eyes and to the other side, the lake of Brennilis and the Mount St Michel of Brasparts.
