‘How can we rethink large-scale commercial development to avoid creation of homogenous and sterile environments?’ Refresh Paddington imagines a diverse and inclusive environment, which continues to be active after business hours, which is currently not the case.

A year-long thesis project, part of the ‘Infrastructures’ graduate studio at Newcastle. The project consisted of a semester-long research into the infrastructure of transport, transit-oriented development and London’s planning policies pertaining to Paddington Opportunity Area (opposite). This was followed by a semester exploring alternative proposals for delivering large-scale commercial development at the selected site at Paddington, addressing a brief that I have defined as a result of the previously conducted research. The result was a masterplan for the selected site (opposite), part of which I have chosen to design in detail, down to technical resolution (below).

MArch Stage 5 | The Total Theatre | 2014 ‘What the Immersive Theatre seeks is to return the spectator’s proximity to the action staged in the theatre. It seeks to create immersive and resonant experiences to counter the alienation of everyday environments, to engage all the bodily senses and ultimately perhaps to yield a cathartic effect.’ Inspired by the language and aspirations of German Expressionism, the project seeks to re-interpret the spirit of the iconic early-twentieth century Grosses Schauspielhaus (Large Playhouse), on its site in central Berlin. Grounded in ‘making’ and material research, a substantial part of the design process was dedicated to the exploration of material (in this case light - both natural and projected) and technology (lightweight geodesic structures with integrated servicing infrastructure, and the applications of ETFE). The result was a fully resolved building grounded in both its historical context and a firm body of material research and exploration. The complete project can be found in my full portfolio.

BA Thesis | Metropolitan Modelling | 2012 ‘Space and light and order. Those are the things that men need just as much as they need bread or a place to sleep.’ - Le Corbusier A semester-long project at the end of my Bachelor’s degree. A mixed-use development adjacent to London’s Tower Bridge, consisting of residential accommodation, offices, retail and a learning centre. Design focus is on the overall masterplan, a detailed resolution of the residential units (including townhouses, flats and penthouses), as well as the landscaping of the urban spaces in and around the scheme. Original full-size sheets can be found in my BA portfolio.

BA Stage 3 & 2 | Sports hall & Youth hostel | 2010-2012 A selection from my BA portfolio. The sports hall (top) was primarily focused on construction, technology and services; whereas the youth hostel (bottom) is more about a poetic and material response to the context.

MArch Dissertation | Capsular Culture | 2014-2015

12

‘Set in post-war Japan, this essay questions the contemporary role of utopian thinking (or the lack thereof) in - and its relevance to - the creation of built environment.’ A year-long independent research project, culminating in a 10.000-word written dissertation. I have presented the final output in form of three separately-bound illustrated A6 books, stylistically resembling the three ‘capsules’ that I have selected as the subjects of my study (bottom image). A very enjoyable piece in terms of both writing and designing, for which I have managed to score an overall distinction. More information on this work available in my full portfolio.

Work in practice | Royal HaskoningDHV | 2012-2013 A selection of my work produced in practice, illustrating the range of tasks and projects I have had the opportunity to work on. Designs produced in collaboration; All images are my own, reproduced with permission of RHDHV. Below: Exhibition entry for Dutch Design Awards that I have curated and built, on behalf of the practice.
