Separados Pero Juntos - meaning separated but together, is a vibrant eye catching window display based off the Auckland Art Galleries exhibition, Space to Dream. The simple yet dominant cubes inspired by the favelas (housing), instantly draw in the viewers eye, through the use of vivid colours and woven textures, illustrating the liveliness and the weaving together of the South American Culture. While the cubes are an impacting visual element, their arbitrary juxtaposition creates a focal point for the Smith & Caughey’s clothed mannequins. Compositionally, the placement and relationship of the cubes and mannequins, demonstrates the fragmentation in South America today. Approaching the brief we considered that the exhibition showcases a variety of works, artists and themes. For this reason we choose to base our design solution on the prominent themes: Origins and Intersections, while drawing on various artists methods and mediums as inspiration to create our final outcome.

Colour The colours: purple, pink and mint green were chosen to reference the bright architecture and the liveliness of the cultures in South America. The muted tones: orange and red, reference the natural resources like copper and clay, and make reference to the spices in Ernesto Neto’s work ‘Just like drops in time, nothing’. The chosen colours also reference the Space to Dream exhibition branding.

Woven Textures The weaving element of our window display relates to three aspects: Firstly, it represents the traditional South American craft of weaving Secondly, it represents the concept of weaving together the 13 culturally and ethnically diverse countries of South America. This dominant theme of weaving in the exhibition is shown both metaphorically and physically, applied in works such as ‘Grande Boca’ or ‘Big Mouth’ by artist Maria Nepomuceno, as she incorporates different forms of weaving in her work. Thirdly, the idea of weaving relates to the winter knitwear collection of S&C, our final stakeholder.

Lighting The lights will be spaced along the top front of the window display shining in onto the hanging cubes. This creates interesting shadows on the white back drop which adds to the dreamy atmosphere. The gaps in the weaved cubes will show against the wall which again emphasises the idea of fragmentation and weaving together of the different cultures. There will also be lights shining onto the mannequins to make sure the clothing is a focal point for selling.
