Aloha e Makai Ohana, Wow, it's the already the Fall Season! Where did that Summer go? Aren‘t you glad we live here in Hawai’i? Time seems to pass by quickly during the last quarter of the year. The 2014 Hawaiian Airlines Na Wahine O Ke Kai and Molokai Hoe are in the record books, the North Shore has already been getting some great surf, and south shore getting some late swells too! Ready or not, the holidays are right around the corner. Soon it will be Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas before you know it. Looking forward to some cooler weather after the record breaking heat! November 4th is the General Election, so get out, and vote! Remember, “No Vote, Go Grumble.” This year we've been busy with hurricanes, lava flows, earthquakes and fires too. I'd like to give a shout out and special “mahalo” to our everyday heroes, our very own Police officers, Firefighters, Coast Guard and military personnel. Thank you for all you do! Don‘t forget, Fire Prevention Week is October 5th thru 11th, 2014. This month, read about our very own Hawai’i‘s City and County of Honolulu, Fire Department, Search & Rescue heroes: Tad Yamashita, the humble water athlete, along with other Firefighters Corey-Ann Kehau Lau, and Adam Trienan-Aea. As we move into 2015, I just wanted to mention how we enjoy sharing about the ocean, the love of it, and that people that share their ocean experiences with you. You, our Makai Ohana, Advertisers and subscribers have helped with the birth, and nurturing of Makai Ocean Lifestyle Magazine. Happy 10th Birthday Makai. Mahalo nui, Lono

Yamashita grew up in the water, surfing and fishing, but when he and couple of friends bought a four man canoe, that was the beginning of what would become a life-long passion for humble steersman Tad Yamashita. Twenty-two years later, The veteran paddler is still going strong as a steersman for Healani Canoe Club and an accomplished one man canoe paddler. Yamashita explains how it all started, “A couple friends and I bought a 4 man canoe to surf when I was about 18, and we would take the canoe into some breaking surf and take turns steering catching waves. It was more fun to me then just paddling.” Like Yamashita's work, he also enjoys the responsibility of being a steersman, with the ability to steer the canoe in the right direction, keeping everyone safe in

the canoe, as well as getting from “point A to point B, it is a huge seat to fill and its definitely a challenge.”
“I recognize that there is only one steersman seat, so when the coach puts you back there, they have high expectations…most results have a lot to do with your performance from that seat.”
makai ocean lifestyle Magazine august/september 2014
As the main or top steersman for Healani, he understands the weight that is placed on the steersman seat carries. “I recognize that there is only one steersman seat, so when the coach puts you back there, they have high expectations…most results have a lot to do with your performance from that seat.” Aside from all the responsibilities, they are also the manager or captain of sorts. (Steersman) “they gotta manage all the different strokes and personalities in the canoe, while trying to stay positive and motivating. They also gotta understand that a lot of jabs will be thrown their way, if the team doesn't fare well, its the steersman‘s fault, if the boat is running crooked, its the steersman's fault, Everyone knows

MAKAH TRIBE PURCHASES WA‘A
2014-06-03 08:32 PM
Nanamua is on her way to Washington. She was purchased by the Makah tribe. The indigenous tribe, which usually paddles dugout canoes, purchased the wa’a as a way to expose the tribal youth to various cultural forms of paddling. The Makah are one of the few Native American tribes that have the right to hunt grey whales, which they do from cedar canoes and small fishing boats. While their right to hunt whales is internationally recognized, the tribes last successful hunt was in 1999. We are proud to be a small part of spreading wa’a around the world.- Luke Evslin makai ocean lifestyle Magazine august/september 2014

its a team sport, and all celebrate in victory, but “It’s all apart of the job.” says Yamashita. Yamashita has paddled in all types of conditions and waters. “Big swells, small swells, flat, windy, calm, hot, cold, open ocean, lake, salt water, fresh water.” With excitement in his eyes, he continues “I even got to steer a raft down the Colorado river once.” Yamashita reveals. Like every paddler, Tad has his preferences in conditions for racing, and it‘s definitely not when it‘s flat. “[It] Kind of depends on who is in the crew, describing his perfect conditions, it would probably not too big, not too small, just the right favorable tide and wind condition, and Oh, and a little bit overcast with slight drizzle.” But, Yamashita isn’t a picky! “Or more simply, whatever conditions that the guys in front of me like paddling in.” Taking the lead as a steersman, as well as being a leader, Tad has spent almost fourteen years dedicating his life to saving others, currently as a part of the Search and Rescue Team out in Mililani, with Rescue One.
“I’m fortunate to have a very supportive wife who is understanding of my paddling problem! Much like paddling, being a part of HFD, means being a part of a team. “Same as the canoe, best crew in the fire house, is one where everyone gets along. There is a level of respect and accountability that needs to be there.” Along with saving lives and racing canoes, the talented waterman loves being an escort boat captain, as he guides

paddlers and stand-up surfers across the Hawaiian waters, keeping them safe, whether it‘s the Kaiwi Channel (between Molokai and Oahu) or the Pailolo Channel (between Maui and Molokai). Being a surfer, body surfer Yamashita is well respected for his calm, yet authoritative demeanor, and his keen ability to navigate through Hawaii}s challenging waters. Everyone needs that one person who is their rock. For Yamashita, his secret weapon is his wife and family. “I'm fortunate to have a very supporting wife who is understanding of my paddling problem! It's the greatest feeling coming in towards the beach after a long race and seeing your beautiful wife Nola and son Titus, standing there waiting to give you a hug and kiss.” Tad‘s wife, not only supports him but also helps him balance out his busy schedule. With a schedule that includes the schedule of his Search and Rescue duties, she also keeps him on schedule for coaching and paddling at Healani. So what‘s next for this steersman-firefighterwaterman-father? Well he and his wife are expecting their second child, a baby girl.

Mixing Fire & Water:
Kehau Lau
Makai Magazine: So Kehau, How long have you been with the Honolul Fire Department? Keahau Lau: I've been with HFD for just a little over 7 years, I started in May of 2007. MM: What is your position with HFD and what station are you with? KL: Did you want to be a firefighter since you were a child? My position is Fire Fighter 1, and I am currently stationed at the Kakaako Station on Engine 9. MM: Did you alwasy want to be a firefighter since you were a child? KL: I was always enamored with firefighters since I was a kid. My grandfather retired as a Captain in Rescue, so I grew up hearing all of his stories…I was always fascinated to hear about their heroic efforts to help others amidst chaotic surroundings. MM:When youre not working saving lives and putting out fires, what do you do with your spare time? KL: When I'm not working HFD, I'm working one of my other jobs teaching PE or working as a lifeguard/pool attendant. When I'm not working, I enjoy paddling, going to SunYoga, running, hiking, surfing, challenging myself with some kind of different workout; all in all just being outside and enjoying Mother Nature! MM: It must get exciting at work so tell us, what has been your most exciting moment at work? 18
KL: I've had many exciting moments at work but one that tops my list was flying in Air 1, our HFD helicopter, during a training session. It was like being on a thrilling roller coaster ride. Our training included jumping out of the helicopter into the ocean, as if we were rescuing someone in the water and then getting picked up with our partner in the "billy pugh net" (the basket-looking contraption used to make rescues) and being dropped off back on land. MM: In the ocean it gets pretty exciting too, so what has been your most exciting moment in the water? KL: Most exciting moment in the water… that's tough…one that was very memorable was my first solo crossing on my OC-1 back in 2009. The conditions were less than favorable but I was determined to finish what I had started, even though it ended up taking 7 1/2 hours…I learned a great deal about myself that day. Another exciting moment was the paddle out to the starting line of 2012's Na Wahine o Ke Kai Moloka`i crossing. I was steering our 2nd crew and remember the size of the swells just to get out of Hale o Lono. I remember watching boats just ahead of us trying to climb the enormous swells only to have a few boats taken out and swamped. We had to "gun it" between the sets to get out to the starting line…I think that was the hardest part of the race!
makai ocean lifestyle Magazine August/september 2014
MM: Do you do any other sports? KL: I enjoy running, biking, practicing yoga, hiking, surfing, swimming, or playing sports with the guys at the station. MM: Any other talents besides helping others and paddling? KL: Hidden talent: (Music, painting, etc) I like to sing and play the guitar and ukulele…but then again, I don't think I'm going to be winning any Hoku Hanohano Awards any time soon…! MM: What Canoe Club do you belong to: KL: I paddle with Hui Nalu Canoe Club. Canoe: Would you rather 6 man or 1 man? MM: Okay, 6 man or 1 man? KL: …hmm…tough question…both help me grow as a paddler in different ways. With 6 man paddling, I love the camaraderie and the team aspect. The 1 man allows me the freedom and independence, time to work on my technique, and offers me solitude and peace. Either way, I am truly grateful for every opportunity to get into the water and learn more about myself, and the ocean. MM: In Hawaii we always gotta ask sohere goes, “Where you went High School?” KL: I went to Kamehameha Schools.

Mixing Fire & Water:
Adam Trienan-Aea Written by Bianca Aweau
Makai Magazine: How long have you been paddling? Adam Trienan-Aea: I started paddling in 1999 at Hui Lanakila. MM: What age did you start paddling? ATA: I was 18 going to UH Manoa. MM: How did you start paddling? ATA: I started paddling from a bet that I made with some friends from high school. Basically my friend told me that he would kick my butt in paddling. At the time I had
not even heard about paddling but told him there was no way I was ever gonna lose any bet against him. So we called his Uncle Butch Ukishima and next thing you know we were down at the ala wai ready to practice. we rigged boats for about a week before we even got to go in the water, and that kind of got my attention. It was a whole new thing to learn. Iv’e been paddling ever since. MM: What positions have you paddled? ATA: I started off in 3-4 and by mid season I was steering. We stayed together as a novice crew for distance and uncle butch steered us for that so I went back in to the ‘pit’. From that year on I have been steering most of the time but, now days I’ll like go to any seat except 1. But, I mostly steer. MM: Why do you love paddling? ATA: There is so much the love about paddling its hard to narrow it down. I love to ride bumps, whether in a 6man or 4man canoe. Once I caught my first wave in a canoe, I was hooked. Paddling with a lot of good friends is also great. It gives us another excuse to get together. You meet a lot of solid people paddling that end up being life long friends. In paddling your always adjusting and trying to give your crew the advantage and I like that . If paddling was easy and not challenging my attention would be lost and I would have quit. MM: Are their any other water activities you enjoy? ATA: I like to do so many things. I’ve never really devoted myself to one sport. I go through spurts of diving,
24

body boarding, canoe surfing, fishing and paddling. depends on what the conditions are like, or what friends are doing at the time. MM: What are the similarities between being a father of two, a firefighter with HFD, and paddling? ATA: Both being a dad and paddler require responsibility, versatility and devotion. My mind changed a whole lot when I had to start providing for my boys. Its an adventure to spend time around the two young comedians. In the fire department we have to be able to not only live with each other for 4 months out of the year, but also depend on each other to keep up our skills and mindset for when an emergency exists. The Honolulu Fire Department is very family oriented and members are constantly helping each other out whenever Untitled-3 someone is need. It’s basically an extended family where all the families meet each other and you tend to spend a lot of time with each other off duty as well. Paddling has been no different. I am very close to a lot of people that I have paddled with and through some of the battles of paddling we have come very close friends.

MM: How do you balance everything on your plate? ATA: We work 24 hours in HFD so when I get home everyone is usually gone from the house at either school or work, so I use that time to finish work around the house. When school is done we usually head down to the beach, after homework of course. As for paddling, we usually call each other and see what days/times work best forstate us. farm .indd Now a days we aren’t getting in the water as much. So a lot of trust is placed on each other to be ready for races. So far my friends have usually been ready and are worried about me. MM: Do you have any plans for the future? ATA: I don’t plan on making any changes. I am pretty content with the way things are in my life. I’m just gonna take it day by day and have fun.

Introducing The Bradley Ultra Testing the Ultra in Kaneohe Bay, were some masters paddlers, which included Gary Samura, Harvey Aki, Ben Anchetta, Jeff Tario, Brian Kon, Charlie “Boy” Kalama & Raymond Lii. They paddled the ultra to give Bradley feedback on its performance and handling. A few months later with the vessel completed cockpits and manu, Team Bradley, paddlers Noe Sawyer, Mahealani Botelho, Lori Nakamura, Arlene Holtzman, Nicole Pedersen, Kelly Fey and Claire Townsend. The positive feed back was re-
turned by all of the paddlers, and the Ultra has finally started production. A traditional Hawaiian blessing of the canoes was done on the canoes & the ohana helping to build the canoe was done by Kahu Kimokeo Kapahulehua at the Bradley factory. The canoe can be made to any weight between one hundred and fifty pounds and as heavy as four hundred pounds if anyone wanted a canoe that heavy. Bradley designed his unlimited canoe with different designs he has seen throughout the world, combining it, and keeping his traditional “Hawaiian” canoe similarities, like the front “manu ihu”, while the “manu hope” or the tail end of the canoe, gets its design from the progressive racing canoes. The Bradley family of canoes include the Racer”, the Striker and the Molokai Hoe and Na Wahine world championship winning “The Lightning” Since the Paddling Athletes Association (PAA) created the ‘Eono Hoe Race in 2010, from Maui to

Molokai, and Molokai to Oahu, paddlers can compete in unlimited as well as open class canoes, finally have a chance of racing in our home waters. Here in Hawaii, canoe builders have been creating some of best Hawaiian canoes around for ages, but in Tahiti, Europe & America, the unlimited class canoes have been raced for decades, and since inception of the ‘Eono Hoe Race, other builders have been taking canoe building to the next level of performance, as well as other races allowing the unlimited class.

Manu O Ke Kai Girls 16ʻs Earn Gold Third time was the charm for Manu O Ke Kai Canoe Club’s girls as they placed first in the 16s division at this years HRCA State Championship Regatt, at Keehi Lagoon. For these girls, it was a three year journey to achieve this goal. Two years ago, as 14s they surprised themselves and earned a bronze medal as they came in 3rd place bronze at states. Last year as 15s they earned a 2nd place silver finish and felt the pang of disappointment finishing behind Keaukaha. This year they made their dream a reality and brought home Manu O Ke Kai’s lone gold medal of the state race. The gold medal also came as a birthday gift to Coach Uncle Randy Sanborn, who along with wife Aloha runs Manu O Ke Kai, who celebrated his 78th birthday the day of the race. This year also marked the North Shore clubs 30th anniversary. Manu O Ke Kai is known to be a top paddling presence on the north shore. The girls’ program is ran by Faith Craycroft, along with assistant coaches Charlotte Lagunte, Michele Rego, & Kim Celebre. Koa Sanborn, Keith Foo, and DJ Oga also assisted the girls as their boat holders throughout the races this year. The 16s crew is made up of girls from across the North Shore. with the youngest of the group is Darcie Burke, a sophomore at Kahuku High School, Victoria Avilla-Dabin, junior, Waialua High School, Eurica Diego, junior, Kahuku High School, Sarina Souki, a senior at Mililani High School, Kilia Chillingworth and Shazary Sinclair, currently seniors at Leilehua High School. Kilia, Sarina and Eurica also raced in the 18‘s crew racing in the state competition, placing 4th. When asked “What was the difference this year for these girls?” Coach replied “The training.” The girls committed themselves to
three days a week, in the canoe, and also cross training meeting at Waimea Bay for early morning workouts. The workouts included beach sprints, hills, planks/core, stand-up paddling, and swimming. In the canoe, along with ther regular practice days of 1 hour, adding interval training, sprint work, and technique, end the day with a swim, push-ups, or lower-body work, depending on the training schedule. After celebrating their state championship and enjoying their gold medals, the girls have refocused and placed their sights on the upcoming distance season with a road trip to Kailua-Kona to participating in the Queen Liliuokalani Race in the teen single hull, 6 mile race. The Queen Liliuokalani race is a weekend long and is the largest canoe race in the world>
