BarefooT Publisher Aloha Makai Ohana, What a launch to a great summer! Starting off with a large swell, it gave everyone the opportunity to grab some great surf! It was so incredible, it kept the news media excited with daily reports for a week! Never before have I seen that kind of excitement from “the mainstream media!” If that is an indication of the summer surf forecast, well, all I can say is “stay wet!” Have a great summer! This months feature is the very talented and humble, Kealii Paiaina. He is a husband, father, firefighter, coach and very competitive elite paddler. Even with his short write-up, he goes beyond his rich historical background in paddling. Enjoy Makaloa Yims article on Paiaina. Team Kanaka Ikaika, returned from a very successful trip to the Tahiti Nui Va‘a event. With over a hundred miles of paddling in three days, it is the longest race in Tahiti. The team comprised of champions from the Kanaka Ikaika race series with winners and top paddlers selected to create an elite “ All-Star Racing team to represent Hawaii.” They progressed through the three days as they got used to the conditions and the canoe, with an impressive, 7th on the first day, 6th on the second day, and 5th on the third day, with a 6th overall finish for the event. The regatta season has kicked off with the Hui Wa’a race season, more surf is expected, and a great summer is anticipated! Watch out for our keiki on the paths to the beach, as they are probably more excited as they are on vacation for summer! Until next month,

ising from its humble beginnings as a rowing club, Healani Canoe Club has grown over the years, yet still upholds their mission of spreading the knowledge of Hawaiian Outrigger Canoe Paddling. With the emphasis on family, founders George “Pops” Wai’ale’ale, Pat Silva, Clement Paiaina Sr., and Elizabeth Paiaina focus on the importance of not just sticking together as a family, but also growing as a family. However, living up to his grandfather’s legacy was no easy task for Kea Paiaina. Not only does he paddle for Healani Canoe Club, but he has also coached for many years. Kea, a humble man of many accomplishments, has always kept his family at the forefront. Additionally, he is a firefighter, an elite paddler, and a highly accomplished coach. 8

Clem Paiaina, Healani’s number #1 cheerleader

With the entire ‘ohana actively involved in all aspects of Healani, Kea grew up experiencing summers that were filled with beach days, practices at Ala Wai, 4:30 a.m. wake-up calls, tent set-ups and break-downs, and all-day races. With the Paiaina family being at the core of Healani Canoe Club, it was only natural that it continued to be a family affair on into Kea’s generation. Not only is his dad, Clement Paiaina Jr., president of Healani Canoe Club, but Kea and his sister, Pua Paiaina, are actively involved with the club, as well. Along with Kea’s own family, his wife, Celeste Paiaina, is also a vital part of the canoe club. “My grandpa would get us (grandkids) all involved with everything before the race. Everything from setting-up, cooking, and cleaning, to waking up at 4:30 in the morning so we could be down at the race site, in order to do all this,” he explained. With his dad coaching him during practice, and his grandfather rallying up the rest of the grandkids to get things done for race day, Kea’s life not only revolved around Healani, but around canoe paddling itself. Kea paddled his first stroke at the age of ten, with a paddle much larger than he was, not realizing that it would remain a continuing passion, twentynine years later. “My dad was my first coach, and summer times were always

the greatest growing up. All of us boys would not only paddle together, but do everything together. It didn’t matter whether it was going beach, or sleeping over at someone’s house and then going to practice.” Kea described how the bonds that he made in his “hanabada days” served to further strengthen his love of canoe paddling. “I guess because we all grew up with it, I just loved it from the start, ‘cause it was one of the things I always knew,” Kea explained. Pua remarked, “I think Kea was born with a paddle in his hands. But then again, our grandfather wasn’t going to let us do anything else other than paddling!” She added, “Kea shows his love and passion for paddling by teaching and coaching others.” She described how Kea’s overwhelming love of the sport has led him to share this wealth of knowledge with all who come to Healani Canoe Club. With such big shoes to fill, Pua agrees that, although it’s hard to fulfill what their grandfather has set forth to accomplish, “Kea always does his very best.” The Paiaina ‘ohana proves over and over, with every passing season, that “blood is truly thicker than water,” in keeping family at the forefront. Strokes made around the world Whether paddling in the crystal waters of Tahiti, and being welcomed with a “Iorana!”, or racing “down-under” with the Aussies, or even paddling along the Asian shores of Hong Kong, Kea has continually immersed himself in a number of different cultures. He checks-off these places as he goes along. Kea has 10

shown that, in spite of all the places that he’s been, “You can take the boy from the island, but not the island from the boy.” He has always held on strongly, not only to his roots in Hawaiian canoe paddling, but to Healani, as well. “With all the places I’ve travelled to, I still kept my ‘ohana above all. And I knew that with everything that I’m learning, it’s all that much more I can teach back home.” Kea has proven to be a man of both humility and talent. Because of this, he has continually been blessed with additional opportunities to paddle for teams that are comprised of athletes who are the “best-of-the-best.” Among these are Team New Zealand, who were once champions of the Kaiwi Channel, and Team Simple Green, which was comprised of the best OC1 paddlers. In becoming an elite paddler, Kea never let this fame go to his head. He always viewed these opportunities as blessings, and he reflected on how lucky he was to have been a part of those teams. “I used to do time trials on my Nai’a with the Outrigger guys. But on the side, not official kine, and I would always be finishing with the guys that were part of their senior crew. At that time, Walter Guild who was from Outrigger, noticed me. From that point on, I was given the opportunity to paddle with other OC1 guys on Team Simple Green,” he explained. “Team Simple Green was Karel’s idea, during the time that he was out to prove that these great OC1 paddlers could also be great six-man paddlers. This was proven when we went to Australia and swept the race down there, and we had fun doing it!” Kea says. With shakas

held high in celebration, these local boys showed the Aussies what Hawaiian canoe paddling was all about. The victorious Team Simple Green, included paddlers Karel Tresnak, Maui Kjeldsen and Kai Bartlett.

Change is inevitable Originally, paddles were bigger than the paddlers themselves. Then “T’s” were added to the shaft. In similar fashion, the art of canoe paddling has continued to change, from the time Kea first started paddling until the present day. Change is inevitable in a sport like canoe paddling , with every passing season, as newer, more efficient, or even faster strokes are taught, and extending on into equipment changes and upgrades. “When I was paddling as a kid, the paddle I held then was way too big for me and much more difficult to hold. The

12

equipment has changed drastically, from big surfing paddles to these smaller carbon paddles that weigh barely anything,” Kea explained. Kea continues to prove that, with all he has accomplished and experienced, his learning journey never ends. It will likely never end, with the way that canoe paddling changes and evolves.

Sharing the knowledge, Sharing the wealth As a young “grasshopper” at age ten, Kea started his paddling career. Then he donned a different hat in his early twenties, when he became a coach at Healani. With all of this experience, Kea was able to share the wealth of knowledge that he had accumulated from paddling all across the globe. Kea only hopes that he can “light a fire” in those that he coaches, and inspire

them to be as competitive and “thirsty” as he is. Although his desire to win is evident, his desire to have fun is far greater! “Winning is fun, but it isn’t everything. The main thing is to just have fun, and to keep that fire every time you’re out on the water,” Kea remarked. Drawing the line between being a coach, and being a friend to his peers, has been one of the things that Kea dislikes about coaching. “Having to put my foot down, and coming down on my guys is hard for me, because they are my peers, my friends. And it’s hard for me to draw that line sometimes, ‘cause when everything is all said and done, we’re all friends just trying to paddle in one canoe.”

In the end When all is said and done, Kea has shown that he is “Mr. Healani.” He remains the ambassador of humility, despite all that he’s accomplished, as well as in looking forward to what’s in store as the future unfolds. With the approach of the 23rd Annual Paiaina Regatta, Kea will remember his grandfather on that day, and honor his legacy. He continues this legacy, through his coaching and paddling at Healani. Pua noted, “He’s not an emotional guy, but when it comes to this regatta and honoring our grandfather, we see a different side of him.” Kea continues to demonstrate how his

Through all that he has accomplished, it is clear that he does everything in the name of his family, Healani Canoe Club, and most of all, his grandfather. Kea continues to amaze the paddling community with his talent and grace, but above all, he instills his family with pride in the continuation of their grandfather’s legacy. In doing so, Kea continues to perpetuate and honor the art of Hawaiian canoe paddling. By going above and beyond in filling his grandfather’s shoes, he has he proven that he is not only an ambassador of humility, but Mr. Healani himself.

Paddling Forward to Giveback: OluKai Commemorates 5th Annual Ho’olaule’a Ocean Festival

Elite Stand Up Paddle Competition Brings Friends and Family Together From Around the Globe for a Weekend of Giveback and Celebration Photos courtesy Olukai OluKai celebrated extended family & Hawaiian culture at its 5th annual Ho’olaule’a on May 11-12 in Maui. Event participants and festivalgoers gathered Saturday and Sunday for what has become one of the most celebrated festival and elite standup paddle competitions (SUP) in the world. With the largest gathering in its history, the event featured canoe sailing, surfing, ancient Hawaiian games, luau, hula, and a history making live music concert. Competing for equal gender prize money of $15,000, SUP and OC1/OC2 (outrigger canoe 1 man/ outrigger canoe 2 man) racers traveled from 10 countries and throughout the U.S. to compete in the Maliko Downwind run, one of the largest SUP races in the world which spans 8 miles of infamous open ocean. The top 3 winners in men’s SUP included Connor Baxter taking 1st place and Dave Kalama and Kai Lenny taking 2nd and 3rd respectively. Taking 1st place in women’s SUP was Andrea Moller, followed by Talia Gangini in 2nd and Devin Blish in 3rd. In men’s OC1/OC2, Kai Bartlett finished 1st, Manny Kulukulualani 2nd, and the team of Dave Kalama and Junya McGurn finished 3rd. The top 3 in the women’s OC1/OC2 race were Lauren Spalding in 1st, Andrea Moller in 2nd and Dane Ward in 3rd. In celebration of the competition and its giveback partners, OluKai presented a musical history-making concert Saturday night featuring six of Hawaii’s top musical recording artists on one stage, for a Hawaiian Kanakapili style back yard jam; a style of Hawaiian music produced in an impromptu jam session. Paula Fuga, Kimie Miner, Justin Young, Ekolu Kalama and Hawaii’s hottest female recording artist and longtime OluKai brand partner, Anuhea, along with Billboard’s #1 Reggae artist, Mishka, played several of their original hits as well as special selections, traditional and modern, in various configurations with each other. "Each year we are inspired by the Ho'olaule'a and how it brings together such incredible people for two days of celebrating Hawaiian culture,” says OluKai Director of Marketing, Kerry Konrady. "From elite paddlers and competitors, world class musicians, volunteers from around the community, our retail partners, to locals and visitors looking to share Aloha, the event has become truly one of the world's elite paddling and cultural festivals. We thank everyone who has supported the effort." Consistent with its commitment to always giving back through its Ohana Giveback program, OluKai made monetary donations in excess of $20,000 to the Hawaiian Lifeguard Association, Maui Cultural Lands, Lae Ula o Kai Canoe Club, Uhane O Waa Kaulua, Paia Youth and Cultural Center and Zenshin Daiko. And continuing with its hands-on approach to giving back, OluKai employees who qualified for travel to Ho’olaule’a by contributing a minimum of 20 hours of local service leading up to the event, wrapped up the weekend at the Maui Cultural Lands Giveback Day. Local volunteers and OluKai staff traveled to Honokowai Valley, a cultural heritage preservation site to contribute efforts towards reforestation and archeological stabilization projects. Through this one-of-a-kind festival, OluKai connects major influential leaders of the industry; this year 14

makai ocean lifestyle MAY/JUNE 2013

OluKai hosted special guests from major and specialty retailers including REI, Zappos, and Sport Chalet; professional paddlers driving the sport of SUP; cultural icons like Archie Kalepa; six renowned musicians; OluKai staff, and over 2,000 passionate locals and festivalgoers.

The Tahiti Nui Va'a race is held every two years and is organized by the electric company of Tahiti (EDT). There are open, masters (40+), junior and women's categories, the last two categories only race the last leg). The race is held on three days around the island of Tahiti with a start at point Venus in Mahina (North Shore), site of the Super Aito races and the last leg finishes in this same location. The finish of the first leg is in Vairao (one district away from Teahupoo surf spot) and the second finish is in Tautira (landing site of Hokulea every voyage). A group of friends build a wa‘a Kuli’ou‘ou READY for Olamau 100 mile race

A team of elite paddlers and friends got together to design and build an open class canoe. With canoe designer Mario Mausio taking the lead and also utilizing the space at his own home, took charge and completed an “open class” design canoe, one that weighs only 150 pounds compared to 400 pounds. In six months the wa‘a “Kuli’ou’ou was built on his spare time and between work, racing and taking care of his ohana. With help of his friends, Eaton Dayrell-Stulen, Adam Treinan-Aea, Kekai Ka‘makawi‘woole & Hayden Ramler, they finally completed the wa‘a. This is just the beginning of their journey. Queen Lili‘uokalani Race Kailua-Kona, Hawai‘i

SATURDAY, SEPT. 14, 2013

Race Labor Day Weekend August 31, 2013 to September 2, 2013 Saturday: Wa'a Kauka( single hull canoes)

The women start this event paddling 18 miles from Kailua Bay to Honaunau. The men then bring it back 18 miles to Kailua Bay. The Ironman divisions do so with no changes! Same team takes it all the way! Awards ceremony - right after finish of men's race. Torchlight parade party starting at dusk.

Sunday: Wa'a Kaulua (double hull canoes)

On Sunday, the men and the women tie together two single hull canoes to make the double hulls, and the women and the mixed double hulls start, taking the Wa'a (canoes) 3 miles South to Lyman's, turn there and return to Kailua Bay for a total of six miles. Note - if you are participating in the double hull races, please bring with you 8 quick straps for rigging.

Sunday: OC1 (one person) & OC2 Races (two person)

The OC1 and OC2 canoe races are a recent addition to the more traditional racing events. The men and women paddling in this one follow the same course as the double-hull canoes. **Please note: We do not provide OC1 & OC2 for these races. We are working on securing information for those who register as to where they may inquire about renting one.

Sunday: Stand-up Paddleboards

Course goes south to Casa de Emdeko, turn there and return to Kailua Bay. Stock total distance: 3.5 miles and Unlimited: 4.5 miles. This year, Hulakai is helping sponsor the SUP event for the weekend. They offer:

Sunday: Teen (single hull canoes)

We are again this year adding three Keiki divisions (OC-6 - 6 person crews): 16 and under, 18 and under & mixed, 18 and under. The young people paddling this race follow the same course as the double hull canoes.

Luau & Awards to follow.

Monday: Ali'i Challenge (single hull canoes - 12 person crew)

The paddling course will run north, the first turn will be at a buoy just outside the Honokohau Harbor. Then the course will double back on itself and the second turn will be at a buoy approximately 1/2 mile south of the Kailua-Kona pier. The third turn will be right about where the finish line is for Saturday's men's race, for a short approach to a lane marked by buoys off the pier where the crew change for the women and 6 men will take place.

DT Fleming Beach, Maui to Kaunakakai, Moloka’i 26 miles 5 Reasons why! 1: THE DATE: SATURDAY 1 Week Before Na Wahine and 3 weeks before Molokai Hoe The date makes the Pailolo Challenge a prime race in gearing up for Na Wahine o Ke Kai and the Moloka’i Hoe. The course offers fantastic training in surf conditions. 2: CANOE CONVENIENCE Why not ship your canoe to Maui, have it hauled (for free!) to Flemings, race it to Moloka’i, and have it hauled to Hale O Lono or Young Brothers? Now that’s convenience! 3: BANG FOR YOUR BUCK The Pailolo Challenge is a great value. The $400 entry fee includes a great 26-mile downwind race, canoe hauling, race shirts and dinner deals at Maui Brewing for your entire crew and coach, awards & goodies, AND a post-race party with food from the people of Moloka’i and brews from Maui Brewing Company. Iron crews can choose to go escort free, which saves in costs. What a deal! 4: MAUI NO KA ‘OI Staying on Maui cheap AND luxurious. The Westin Ka’anapali Ocean Resort Villas is offering Pailolo Challenge participants an unbelievable deal on rooms: only $139/night Check out their stunning rooms at: StarWoodHotels.com Contact Hawaiian Canoe Club (please use contact form below) for the promotional code to secure your $139 room today! 5: SUPPORT MOLOKA‘I The Moloka‘i community benefits from the Pailolo Challenge. The Moloka’i High School Track Team will make money from feeding hungry paddlers at the post-race party. Local businesses benefit from purchases, car rentals, and night stays.

Canoes: HCRA approved (400 lbs+) and Non-Spec (meets PA'A regulations) Divisions: Change crews for men, women, mix, masters (40, 50, 60). Iron crews for open men, women, mixed. Entry fee: $400 per crew. No escort boat required for iron crews. We provide luggage transport for iron crews.
