WORLD FOOD DAY World Food Day, observed every 16th of October in more than 150 countries, aims to create a hunger free world by the year 2030 through raising awareness on the issues behind poverty and global hunger. Makati Shangri-La, Manila is the only hotel in the Philippines to adopt and take an active participation in this global movement since 2017 championed by the hotel’s Executive Chef Nicola Canuti. This year, the hotel celebrates World Food Day with the theme #GrowingTogether, which focuses on the hotel’s efforts on using the finest locally and ethically-sourced ingredients in the hotel’s culinary requirements. “I decided to choose from local suppliers because they’re passionate in what they do. They try to deliver the best produce, so I want to help these people at the same time. I also encourage my guests to discover these produce,” said Chef Canuti. Year to date, we have already increased our consumption of locally sourced produce by a massive percentage. In the following years, we are expecting a further increase of our demand for these. By locally sourcing our produce, we can create a deeper relationship with the farmers and markets for sustainable products, encourage sustainable agricultural practices, and provide a higher quality cuisine to guests and diners. One positive action leads to another–this is how Makati Shangri-La, Manila, the community, and the environment grow together.

On its 25th anniversary, Makati Shangri-La, Manila took guests on a trip down memory lane with a ‘90s-themed party.
