look different to you? We’re so excited to present this inaugural issue of Better. Not just a new name, our transformation brings a new look, a new website, and an even broader reach throughout Chicagoland and across the country. If you haven’t already joined us online, we hope you will by subscribing to our Better Letter at better.net/subscribe. It’s no accident that we’re unveiling this first issue of Better in conjunction with our “Best of 2019” readers’ choice awards, our annual competition that lets you celebrate the businesses and organizations that make your life and community better (it’s also one of our favorite parts of our publishing year!).

Few Chicagoans are aware that one of the 20th century’s most influential Americans was born here at 2156 N. Tripp Ave. on Dec. 5, 1901.

20 FAL L 2019 B E T T E R

Brooke McDonald, Editor-in-Chief

COULD THIS BE CHICAGO’S NEXT ‘BEST MUSEUM’? If you get our Better Letter or follow me on Instagram (@brookegmcdonald), you may have noticed that I’m an unabashed Disneyphile. So, I was shocked and delighted to learn somewhat recently that not only was Walt Disney born in Chicago, but his birthplace in the Hermosa neighborhood is undergoing an incredible restoration and will soon become a must-visit destination for Disney fans and history buffs alike. You can read about why this is such a cool project at better.net/disneybirthplace and learn how to support the restoration at thewaltdisneybirthplace.org. And be sure to find out which museums our readers named the Best of 2019, on page 44.

A PPY FA LL! DOES something

For the big reveal, turn to page 43 to learn the 187 winners in the city and suburbs—and take notes! There are so many newcomers to this list we can’t wait for you to check out, plus plenty of repeat winners so good at what they do you’ll want to make sure you have them on your radar. Two cases in point are this year’s winners for Best Architect: firsttime winner in the city category, Kipnis Architecture + Planning, and repeat winner in the suburbs, Reynolds Architecture (Reynolds was also named Best Builder–Suburbs for the first time this year). To give you a taste of why our readers think these businesses are tops—and because we can always use some home design and décor inspo—we asked them to share glimpses of a few recent projects, and the results are stunning (p. 54). The arrival of fall tends to inspire reflections on the passage of time—we mourn the end of summer; kids head back to school another year older; we look ahead to the holidays and bidding another calendar year farewell. If you find yourself waxing contemplative about time flying by, be sure to read bestselling author Jerry Jampolsky’s beautiful first-person piece, “Senior Boomers” (p. 68), for an important reminder that growing older can be something to celebrate, not fear. We’re all about positivity at Better, but let’s be honest, the onslaught of another Chicago winter is something worthy of our fear, so you’ll want to have your escape plan in place. To help, we’ve packed this issue with travel content to inspire your wanderlust. First, I join two of my favorite travel writers in naming our ultimate bucket-list destinations for every type of traveler (p. 60). Then, on page 81, hotel guru Amber Gibson (seriously, the woman spends 350 nights a year in hotels, so she knows her stuff) names the 10 best new hotels for 2019. BRB, we’re packing our bags! As always, you’ll find plenty more in this issue to keep you busy for the rest of the year, from festive fall fun (p. 33) to the holiday season’s hottest theater tickets (p. 96). Thanks for joining us for this next phase of our journey. Our readers are truly what make us Better.

Project Excellence

The late Charlie Trotter, seminal Chicago celebrity chef and Wilmette native, may be gone, but his influence still looms large. THE TROTTER PROJECT, Chef Trotter’s philosophical legacy of excellence, purpose and service to others, is testament to the impact that he had as a mentor to both chefs and disadvantaged students. The project offer scholarships and mentorship to students who lack opportunities and resources, providing them with brighter futures. The Trotter Project has found tremendous support from both the culinary community and the general public through events such as Charlie Trotter Days and—new this year—a Beer Fest featuring many of Chicago’s top craft breweries, both held in August. Their biggest fundraiser, the 3rd Annual Excellence Gala: Women & Innovation, will be held at The Lakewood (1758 W. Lake St., Chicago) in the West Loop on Friday, Oct. 18. The event will be hosted by Trotter Project board member Deb Gross and James Beard Award–winning sommelier Belinda Chang; headlining chefs include New York City’s James Beard Award–winning pastry chef Elizabeth Falkner and chef Antonia Lofaso from LA’s Dama, Scopa Italian Roots and the Black Market Liquor Bar. thetrotterproject.org

GLITZ

GLORIOUS CHAOS

You enter the opulent Spiegeltent ZaZou with some trepidation, because unless you’re lucky enough to have visited the original Teatro ZinZanni in Seattle (founded in 1998, it’s still going strong!) you won’t truly know what to expect. Here’s what’s on the menu: Love, Chaos, and Dinner. World-class aerialists, acrobats, comedians, and vocalists combine to produce three hours of pure entertainment—although, fair warning, it isn’t really suitable for younger children. The delicious four-course dinner (or brunch) is designed by Debbie Sharpe, the Chicago dining world’s “Goddess.” Join the fun by buying one of the steam punk–inspired masks or glitzy costume jewelry offered in the spacious lobby area, further decked out with a Champagne station and gorgeous full bar. The next version of the show will debut Oct. 3, and the whole space can be rented for events of up to 330 guests. It’s the coolest fete in town. zinzanni.com/chicago/

Your Chicago / CURRENTS

Building Blocks Since 2015, the CHICAGO ARCHITECTURAL BIENNIAL, a nonprofit committed to fostering an international forum on architecture and urbanism through public programming and eye-catching, distinctive unique showcases, has hosted the most comprehensive design exposition in North America in the very heart of our fair city. With three curators and nearly 80 contributors from around the world, the third edition of the Biennial, “… and other such stories,” is shaping up to be a fascinating exploration of how architecture affects community and collective memory. More than 40 sites across the city will serve as host venues for this year’s coterie of events, with the landmark Chicago Cultural Center as the main venue. Every two years, these exhibits expose the viewing public to up-andcoming talents in the field of architecture and design. What better place than Chicago to host such a forward-thinking series of events? Chicago Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot is thrilled about the Biennial: “I’m excited that my first year as mayor will include this type of cultural alliance that connects memory, history, and civil and environmental rights as they relate to architecture while addressing some of the key issues impacting Chicago’s citizens.” (Sept. 19 – Jan. 5) chicagoarchitecturebiennial.org

hen a spunky Niles West girls basketball team took home the Illinois High School Association’s championship trophy in 1979, it was only three years after the momentous Title IX legislation had passed, prohibiting gender discrimination in education. Lincolnwood native Melissa Isaacson, now an award-winning sportswriter and professor at Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism, was part of that high school dream team, and her new book, “STATE: A Team, a Triumph, a Transformation,” chronicles the compelling story. “More than a basketball book, I like to think of it as a coming-of-age story of my teammates and I living through this incredibly transformative time in our nation’s history post–Title IX, and how this experience changed the people we were and the women we would become,” Isaacson says. “It’s about what I knew as a teenager and what I found out as an adult, and what basketball did to save us.” Isaacson will narrate the audiobook to be released in late fall. Northwestern is hosting an Oct. 11 panel discussion about the book. Panelists include Connie Erickson, Isaacson’s Niles West teammate who played basketball at NU (and nearly made the 1984 U.S. Olympic team); Amy Eshleman, wife of Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot and a starring freshman on the 1977 Sterling High School girls basketball team, the first girls team ever to win the Illinois state championship; and Isaacson herself. The panel will be moderated by ESPN NBA reporter Malika Andrews. For more information, visit melissaisaacson.com.

Your Chicago / WELLNESS

Take the Edge Off

The kids are back in school, fall work deadlines are looming, the holidays are closing in — and you’re feeling ALL the stress. Something’s got to give! Two options we love to help handle the pressure: acupuncture and CBD products.

Get to the Point For millennia, traditional Chinese medicine has made use of acupuncture—the insertion of whisper-thin needles into incredibly specific locations on the body— to cure any number of ills, from aches and pains to allergies and autoimmune disorders. The object is to balance the life force or qi (pronounced “chee”) that flows through your body. Many people swear by this popular holistic treatment. “Acupuncture treats the underlying imbalances or root causes of health issues,” says acupuncturist Kelly Miller of Strata Integrated Wellness Spa (strataiws.com). Wondering what to expect? Here’s a quick primer:

Buzzworthy

FULL DISCLOSURE:

IT SHOULDN’T HURT:

HAVE IT YOUR WAY:

There is generally soothing music playing, and occasionally the aroma of incense wafting about. Single practitioners may have a home office, while some acupuncturists work in clinics or even luxe spots like Chuan Spa at The Langham in downtown Chicago. Often other Chinese medicine treatments are also on the menu, such as cupping or moxibustion.

The first consultation will involve a lot of sharing of personal info on your part. The practitioner will want to know a general medical history and how your organs are functioning. They will thoroughly examine your tongue for clues about your blood circulation and production, as well as your digestive system. Who knew it was such an effective barometer?

We get it. You hear “needles” and you want to leap off the table and hide. But acupuncture isn’t like getting a shot. The needles are threadlike in thinness, very flexible, and are inserted only about a half inch into your skin. It’s supposed to be a relaxing process, and many patients fall asleep during the procedure. You might feel a light zing when the needles are first inserted, but it dissipates quickly.

Treatments are highly customized to each individual, and no two treatments will be exactly alike, even if you are a repeat customer.

THE VIBE:

After recent state regulation, the Illinois market has been flooded with CBD dispensaries and products. It may not get you high, but the medicinal benefits of CBD (or cannabidiol), an extract of the Cannabis sativa plant, have been touted for relief of anxiety, depression, pain, sleep issues, and even acne. It’s sold in a number of different forms, including oils, oral drops and edibles (think gummies, teas, and baked goods). Here are five stores that carry legal CBD products (meaning no THC!) for you to try.

WE ASKED, THEY ANSWERED:

Who mentored you and what was the best advice they gave you? DR. JANICE JACKSON, Ed.D. “Dr. Cynthia Barron mentored me and helped me become the leader I am today through her support, advice, and guidance. She taught me that leadership is about making the difficult decisions needed to positively impact the lives of others. It won’t always be fun, it certainly won’t be easy, but if you embrace the challenging times, you will be a more effective, stronger leader.” PENNY PRITZKER “I have been blessed to have a number of fantastic mentors throughout my career, so it is difficult to name just one. But the most important lessons I’ve learned from them is that true fulfillment comes from building something that has a positive impact on community, whether it be a business, a cause, or in government, and that being a good mentor means keeping the ladder down for others so they may rise.” DR. JO ANN ROONEY “A mentor is someone who is able to listen intently and be present in ways that help you to hear and reflect on your own voice and identify your path forward. Throughout my diverse career, and even as a student, I have benefited greatly from a number of people who encouraged and supported me to take risks, affirm my passions, and challenge my own thinking. Working in education where lives are transformed every day, I hope to identify opportunities to extend the same active listening, care, and support to others.” KAREN SAUDER “My father was my first (and best) professional mentor. He taught me integrity is the most important quality, in life and business. Today someone might describe that as building your brand but his message was much more about fairness and truthfulness, especially when no one is watching. ANDREA ZOPP “I have been blessed to have several mentors over the course of my career, and I have received critical guidance from them. One piece of advice that has stayed with me is the importance of being your own advocate. If you don’t believe in yourself, how can you expect anyone else to?”

BEST OF 2019 WINNER FOR HOME & DESIGN: BEST ARCHITECT CHICAGO

T

SEEING GREEN

W ENTY-SIX YEA RS AGO, when Nathan Kipnis, FAIA, president

of Kipnis Architecture and Planning, launched his eponymous architectural firm, he was hired by a local family for a small bathroom renovation project. As the years ticked away, this same couple turned to Kipnis three more times with a variety of larger-scale initiatives—most recently the comprehensive design of their new dream home along Chicago’s North Shore. Kipnis worked 56 FA L L 2019 B E T T E R

alongside Ken Fisher, Ken Fisher Builders Inc., on the construction and Laura Harney on interior design. With their home tucked on a lushly wooded lot, Kipnis’ clients wanted a Zen-like feel and a design geared to first-floor living. “We talk about ‘aging in place,’” says Kipnis. “That doesn’t necessarily mean getting older, but in designing a home for first-floor living, it leaves open the possibility that this could be a ‘forever’ home.” Meshing midcentury modern and craftsman aesthetics, Kipnis and his team expertly divided the home’s public and private spaces using a floating staircase. “You know how everyone says their latest project is their favorite,” says Kipnis. “This is absolutely true for me of this house. Not only does

my clients’ yogi lifestyle carry throughout this beautiful space, where the windows are floor to ceiling and the outdoors have literally been brought inside; this home is also one of the most energy efficient we’ve ever designed.” Additionally, Kipnis incorporated resilient design strategies into the home. Resilient design is the ability of a house to handle natural or manmade disasters or interruptions and recover quickly. These include oversize gutters and downspouts, ice and water shield membrane under the entire roof, prewiring for a future battery backup system, multiple sump pumps, etc. Kipnis Architecture and Planning is guided by the idea that architectural design excellence need not be sacrificed for principles of

sustainability. Instead, Kipnis believes green design expands what is possible architecturally, in construction methods and what materials are used. A Kipnis company tagline is “High Design/Low Carbon™.” Before ground is broken on one of the firm’s designs, architects model the future energy performance of the house. “There were lots of tricky details for us to consider in making this home perform as well as it did,” Kipnis says, citing its thickly insulated walls as an example. “Our hope is that someday soon we’ll update our tagline to read ‘High Design/Zero Carbon.’” Kipnis Architecture and Planning, 1642 Payne St., Evanston, 847-864-9650, kipnisarch.com B E T T E R FA L L 2019 57

BEST OF 2019 WINNER FOR HOME & DESIGN: BEST ARCHITECT SUBURBS, BEST BUILDER SUBURBS

J

FROM START TO FINISH

UST A S NO two people are exactly the same, no two architectural

projects follow the same path. This is why the team at Reynolds Architecture pride themselves on seeing their projects through from concept to fruition. “We’re the true definition of a designbuild firm,” says Leah Bolger, director of interiors. “Our success is rooted in the fact that we’re devoted to all aspects of every project— from start to finish. Over the course of a project, design details evolve. Because of our process, we’re able to provide design continuity and guide clients through the challenges of design and construction.” Here, two recent success stories. Conventional Elegance (this page) “Our goal was to provide a home with authenticity and be true to this 58 FA L L 2019 B E T T E R

English country style,” says Doug Reynolds, architect and president of Reynolds Architecture. Limestone partitioned windows, details, leaded glass, herringbone patterns on the chimney and Vermont black slate roof are the hallmarks of the historic inspiration and provide the intended interest and character. “This was a unique opportunity to explore a design vocabulary appreciated by homeowners who admired classic North Shore architecture,” Reynolds says. Understated Sophistication (top, opposite page) While this French-inspired 5,500-square-foot Glencoe home takes its cues from traditional European architecture, the details speak a more linear and modern vocabulary. “The success of this project lies in the combination of textured surfaces, natural light, neutral palette, and absence of unnecessary ornament,” Reynolds says. The owners had very sophisticated taste and wanted the exterior to feel like a classic North Shore home but transition to a more modern and restrained aesthetic indoors. Reynolds Architecture, 1765 Maple St., Suite 200, Northfield, 847-501-3150, reynoldsarchitecture.com

Opposite: This home is situated on a corner lot, so hiding the garages was a primary objective. Anchoring the faรงade with a limestone bay, varying the overall massing, and different chimney details provide interest from every perspective. This page, counterclockwise from top: Classic architectural inspiration and simple elegance are the cornerstones of this warm and welcoming North Shore home; thoughtfully situated beyond the entry, this stair hall features tailored white oak stairs, square balusters and hand rail, white walls and light floors, creating a simple yet strong statement; This dramatic space, including a crystal chandelier, features a domed skylight that provides filtered light to the elegant curved staircase and entry below (home opposite page).

Here, you can snorkel in a private lagoon teeming with native Hawaiian fish in a calm and protected space that’s perfect for first-timers. Just steps from the pool is a tranquil cove and sandy beach with plenty of chairs, umbrellas, and paddleboards and beach toys for rental. Be sure to head back down to the beach at sunset for storytelling by the firepit and unforgettable family photos. EAT: At The ‘Olelo Room, learn to speak

(If you’re smart, you’ll come back in the morning for the buttermilk pancakes with macadamia nut–Tahitian vanilla sauce.) Cool off by the pool with authentic Hawaiian shave ice in exotic flavors like coconut, guava, and lillikoi—be sure to add Mickey ears and a topping of sweetened condensed milk for maximum fun and deliciousness.

It’s an ambitious first venture into hospitality for one of France’s premier gourmet food brands and as one might expect, housemade sweets and treats tempt you, from fresh-baked macarons upon check-in to nougat and salted caramels by the elevator. Every room comes with an epic gourmet bar—a Roche Bobois–designed minibar that’s not so mini, but as big as a fullsize refrigerator with dozens of complimentary Fauchon snacks both sweet and savory replenished daily, plus complimentary Fauchon brut rosé. The spa here is small but wonderful—like a private oasis with a pink mosaic steam room. Breakfast is a multicourse affair, a parade of pastries, fruit, yogurt, French cheese, and softly scrambled, fried or soft-boiled eggs, all served with Fauchon’s own honey, jellies, chocolate hazelnut spread, and tea. FOR ADVENTURERS: Discover Sri Lanka glow prettier than any Instagram filter on Yala National Park, and the 4X4 is jostling along a dirt road. Captaining it is a guide with ultra-keen senses—the kind that can zero in on a camouflaged crocodile. Or point out in a tree the crimson-fronted barbets, tiny, leafy green-colored birds with rainbow swirls near their necks that look as though they’re the muses of New York Fashion Week designs. But it’s not just impeccable vision and binoculars that’s helping our guide stalk a leopard at dusk. It’s intuition, and the engagement of other senses, listening for monkeys to howl and set off an alarm system in the trees that a predator is nearby. We’re on the cusp of a climactic safari moment. Just like that, our small group spots the leopard, with his cocky saunter, making his calculated commute into the forest. The leaves begin to rustle and the monkeys, based on their calls, let us know they spot him, too. Africa, no doubt, is a known safari destination, and REI Adventures also offers safari-centric trips to Tanzania and Botswana. But don’t sleep on Sri Lanka, an island in the Indian Ocean that’s bidding for some attention, too—proving that it’s an 66 FA L L 2019 B E T T E R

adventurer’s playground and host to some remarkable safaris. PLAY: REI’s 12-day “Discover Sri Lanka:

Temples, Tea Trails, and Safari” trip includes dusk and dawn safari trips in Yala, home to leopards, elephants, water buffalo, and more. But competing as a highlight on the itinerary, especially for elephant lovers, is an early morning safari by boat in Gal Oya National Park. Watch elephants dunk themselves in the water, and enjoy a serene picnic brunch on a rock overlooking the water. You’ll spend two nights at Gal Oya Eco Lodge, a luxe, off-thegrid retreat, during this portion of the trip. Take a shower in your private outdoor bathroom under the moonlight and listen to the jungle’s orchestra. The REI itinerary also includes biking through a jungle and diverse hiking routes. For example, one will wind you through verdant tea plantations and another engages the quads as you ascend to the top of Sigiriya, or Lion’s Rock, an ancient fortress built for kings. Toward the end of the trip, you’ll stay at a beachfront hotel in Galle. Carve out a couple of hours to take a tuk-tuk ride to Dream Cabana on Dalawella Beach. Five rupees (less

than a dollar) will get you a few whee-inducing rope swings from a palm tree. The money generated from the scenic swing goes toward a sea turtle rescue. EAT: Almost all your meals will be included in

the trip, and you’ll have a chance every day to sample local cuisine, which ranges from spicy curries to egg hoppers, a crepe-like bowl with a soft-boiled egg in the middle. Sip coconut water from a coconut and shake some chili powder on your pineapple. The REI itinerary includes a trip to a local market, where your group picks out vegetables and fish with a local, who will then give you a hands-on cooking lesson. HIGHLIGHT: During this trip, you’ll sample dif-

ferent types of lodging, from a traditional hotel in the bustling city of Kandy to cottages on a spice plantation. But one that will blow you away is the Madulkelle Tea and Eco Lodge. A tuk tuk twists and turns up a mountain, delivering you to a misty resort with an infinity pool. You’ll get locks for your glamping-style tents to keep mischievous monkeys out— convincing you that, really, the whole trip is a safari of sorts. rei.com/adventures/trips/asia/ discover-sri-lanka —BRITTANY ANAS

FOR MULTIGENERATIONAL TRAVELERS: Alaska Cruise From Vancouver, Canada

TOP: DISNEY CRUISE LNE; BOTTOM: BROOKE GEIGER MCDONALD

Keeping several generations of trav-

elers happy on vacation may seem like no small feat, but Disney Cruise Line has found a way to make multigenerational travel seamless for everyone. There are plenty of itineraries to choose from, like Bermuda, the Panama Canal, the British Isles, and the French Riviera, but our top pick for the most memorable is without a doubt Alaska. Sail on the Disney Wonder out of cosmopolitan Vancouver, Canada, and marvel at jaw-dropping fjords, waterfalls, and glaciers right from the ship’s balconies (this is definitely the time to spring for your own private verandah). Tear yourself away from the sights and you’ll be treated to Broadway-caliber entertainment, elegant food crafted by award-winning chefs, and fun for kids around every corner. PLAY: To take in all that Alaska has to offer,

“Port Adventures” take you straight from the ship to some truly incredible experiences. Fish for crabs and spot orcas and bald eagles in Ketchikan, take a thrilling dogsled ride in

Juneau, visit the breathtaking Dawes Glacier, pan for gold in Skagway, and whale-watch in Icy Strait, where, if you’re lucky, you’ll be treated to the unforgettable site of breaching humpbacks alongside your boat. On board, kids will want to hit the pools and waterslides, meet up with favorite Disney characters, or hang out at one of several kids-only zones like the Oceaneer Club and Lab (ages 3–12) and the It’s a Small World Nursery (ages 6 months–3). At these secure, super-cool themed spaces (think: Marvel, Toy Story, and Frozen), a team of childcare pros will supervise your kiddos while they have the time of their lives running around “Andy’s Room,” doing arts and crafts, and interacting with characters who often swing by to join in the fun. While the kids are occupied, parents can socialize at a mixology class, kick back at the adults-only pool, or decompress with a treatment at Senses Spa & Salon. In the evenings, families can catch newrelease films or live productions of Broadwayesque shows like “Frozen, a Musical Spectacular,”

coffee bar, an expansive buffet, a poolside grill, and an all-day serve-yourself ice cream station are just a sampling of the elaborate dining options available on the ship. For dinner, indulge in nightly specials like rack of lamb, lobster tail, and chateaubriand as you rotate through three different dining rooms, the elegant, subtly Little Mermaid– themed Triton’s; Tiana’s Place, which transports you straight to the Mardi Gras bead–strewn streets of New Orleans; and Animator’s Palette, a stunning space that celebrates the magic of Disney animation. For an even more elevated culinary experience, drop the tots at the kids’ club and head to Palo. This sophisticated, adult-exclusive restaurant serves gorgeously presented Northern Italian fare in a fine-dining setting perfect for a romantic brunch or dinner or grown-up group gathering. Don’t feel like leaving the room? Hit up the 24-hour room service menu (at no additional charge!) for breakfast in bed, a late-night snack, or a cheese plate to enjoy with wine on your verandah. HIGHLIGHT: Cruise ship accommodations will

always mean closer quarters than your average hotel, but a smart layout, tons of storage, and some pretty epic daily “mousekeeping” keep you from ever feeling overcrowded in your room. Your stateroom host or hostess will visit multiple times per day (miraculously always when you’re away), stowing or turning down beds, bunks, and Murphy and sofa beds each morning and night, and each time you return you feel you’re entering a spotless room for the very first time. FIRST PERSON

Getting older is something to celebrate and enjoy, not something to fear.

S E N IO R BOOM E R S BY JERRY JAMPOLSKY

I L L U S T R AT I O N B Y B R I A N S TA U F F E R

B E T T E R FA L L 2019 69

woke up on the morning of my 94th birthday and, quite unceremoniously, entered my 95th year. One of the things my wife, Diane, and I do daily upon awakening is express gratitude for another day of living and commit to making that day the best and the happiest day of our lives, regardless of what life puts on our plates and regardless of the state of our bodies. Your happiness level is, reportedly, influenced 40 percent by genes and 15 percent by circumstances. That means it’s 45 percent up to us to determine just how happy we want to be, based on our belief systems and our attitudes about life. That is really good news. The bad news is that our culture continues to market “antiaging” as an antidote to growing old. If we really understood this special time and what it means to be an older adult, we would not fear aging, but meet it head-on. I am one of those who do not think I have gone out to pasture and who believe that what I do, say or write about can still make a difference. I remain fully alive and fully engaged in life around me. My wife is a baby boomer born in 1946 and her life experiences have spanned from the postwar tradition-minded ’50s to the tumultuous and rebellious ’60s, Vietnam, the women’s movement, the civil rights movement and beyond. Like Diane, many women began their lives surrounded by people in strictly traditional roles, and many redefined what it means to be an independent and equal human being in modern times. The term baby boomers encompasses most of what her generation has undergone. Likewise, my generation, 75 to 95 years of age, represents a breadth of experiences, accomplishments, discoveries and courageous acts. I see some of us as what I call “senior boomers,” people who may have changed the way they look at the world and decided to look through the eyes of love instead of fear. They don’t make the past and the future their enemy. 70 FA L L 2019 B E T T E R

Instead, they make friends with the present, which allows them to live life to the fullest. A senior boomer is a love finder rather than a fault finder, a love giver instead of a love seeker. For people at this stage, the purpose of life is to be a messenger of unconditional love wherever they go. Remembering that anyone can make a difference at any age, I as a senior boomer continue to be vital, creative and involved. Age does not have to be a limitation. My experiences are deeply shaped by either the optimism or pessimism with which I look at the world. I get to choose how I experience each and every day. That is a power many of us do not realize we possess. I continue to write articles on a regular basis, have recently had two new books published and am starting a third, all since I entered my 90s. I go to the gym four to five times per week because I believe that keeping my body in shape helps keep my mind active and my imagination and creativity flowing.

A senior boomer is a love finder rather than a fault finder, a love giver instead of a love seeker. When I was born, the life expectancy of men in America was 57 years and for women it was 60. When Diane was born men generally lived to age 64 and women to age 69. We are now redefining what it means to live beyond age 75 in modern times and we have choices no other generation has had. Living long past retirement age, we often have a few decades or more to redefine our lives and to pursue additional meaning. What a gift the years can bring if we choose to see it that way. I always like to ask myself the following question about my choices: “Am I making this decision based on love? Or am I making it based on fear?” The answer I choose invariably determines my direction and the outcome. After decades of working as a psychiatrist, I believe more firmly than ever that our attitudes, more than anything else, shape our experiences. I have often found that the most important task we have to complete before we can experience real happiness is to shift our attitudes so that we forgive ourselves and everybody else, completely. Children have often been my best teachers. They typically don’t hold on to grievances like adults do and they get over their anger at one another rather quickly because for them there isn’t any value in staying mad. I personally keep a 4-year-old child alive inside me to remind myself of being playful and the importance of having fun and even of feeling comfortable being silly. As I keep that child alive, I hold innocence, wonder and love within myself and can readily share it with others. Many senior boomers know the mutual joys of interacting with grandchildren, but whether you are related by blood or not, contact with younger people can have deep emotional rewards. Older people often have the time, talent and ability to volunteer alongside young people or mentor them as they begin to navigate the working world. Seniors, with their maturity, perspective and depth of experience found nowhere else in our culture, bring unique value to such encounters. Organizations like Encore.org and Experience Corps can guide us toward meaningful, life-enhancing opportunities to really make a difference in the lives of others. It’s my impression that the people who are happiest do what they love, as often and for as long as they can. As we age it is inevitable that we lose many more family members and friends. One of the factors that help define whether seniors are happy, content and at peace is whether or not they have come to terms with their own death. Some are guided and comforted by a traditional theology, often long held, while others are redefining what it means to experience dying. Those who keep a distance from the subject are often driven by fear of the unknown and of separation. How well we have done our work

around dying often dictates how well we live the rest of our lives. It seems to me that many senior boomers have come to realize just how important healing all their relationships can be. They seem to pay more attention to keeping a peaceful mind than to keeping old grievances and grudges alive. Being more lighthearted allows them to not take themselves and everyone else so seriously. They wake up and not only decide to make this day their happiest but remind themselves how important it is to not pass judgment on others or on themselves. They see peace of mind as part of their spiritual DNA; they believe part of that DNA is happiness and that we are happiest when we are giving our love away. They seem to have no enemies anymore because they have realized it takes a whole lot more energy to keep their anger alive than it does to forgive, and that forgiveness really is the key to happiness. Perhaps best of all, they can experience peace inside even when there is chaos going on all around them. Senior boomers are often delighted to find that their later years have turned out to be the best years of their lives. They no longer feel the need to prove themselves and are no longer afraid of failure, knowing that failures often pave the way for success. Many seem to have a lot of gratitude and do their best to see the light in others, regardless of other people’s behavior. Basically, they have found that the more love they bring to each encounter, the more love they receive. After these many years, I am convinced more than ever that no matter what the question, or the problem, or the illness, or the pain, whatever the conflict or fear, love is the answer. Love is always the answer, because love is everything.

The world’s first underground hotel, built in an abandoned quarry in the suburbs of Shanghai, took more than 12 years, $300 million and 41 newly patented engineering solutions to bring to life. At InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland, guest-room wings hug the rock face in a harmonious yin and yang design, connecting city and nature. Sixteen of the 18 floors are underground and two floors are actually underwater. Six underwater suites have their own saltwater aquariums, and every room has a balcony, a cozy theater box from where you can catch the nightly water show, a water and light extravaganza much more impressive than the Bellagio’s water show in Las Vegas. You can kayak around the quarry, now filled with water, or go rock climbing, scaling 88 meters of cliff face. You can even zip-line across the quarry at the theme park next door.

Guest rooms are some of the most spacious in Shanghai, featuring original artwork by Chinese artists, yoga mats, and soaking tubs. The hotel’s premier restaurant, La Scala, is one of the best Italian restaurants in the city, with a light, modern touch. After a long flight, the detox massage at the Sukhothai’s spa, combining Chinese, Malay, and Indian massage techniques, will leave you feeling loose, limber, and relaxed.

Hôtel Lutetia, Paris Hôtel Lutetia reopened last year in the Saint-Germain-des-Prés neighborhood, grander and more elegant than ever after a four-year closure for renovations. The palace hotel originally opened in 1910, and everyone from Picasso and Matisse to Josephine Baker stayed here. This is where James Joyce wrote “Ulysses” and General Charles de Gaulle honeymooned here as a young officer before World War II. Today, it’s the nicest, most elegant hotel on the Left Bank, but still preserves its bohemian charm. A quarter of the 184 rooms are now suites, including seven specialty suites and two penthouses. Along with a spa, there’s a lovely salon by Christophe-Nicolas Biot to get exquisitely coiffed for a fancy night on the town.

Hotel Capitol Kempinski, Singapore kempinski.com

Two heritage government buildings, the Capitol Building and Stamford House, have been connected to create Singapore’s newest luxury hotel. Many original art deco and Victorian elements, like the chengal wood flooring, remain and the 157 guest rooms and suites come in nearly 50 unique room configurations working within the landmark’s existing architecture. Even standard rooms are quite spacious, with free-standing tubs, high-gloss piano rosewood lacquered finishes, and Italian marble floors. The rooftop outdoor saltwater relaxation pool, Singapore’s first, is adjacent to the spa, where Asian massage techniques are prevalent. Book the oriental massage if you prefer deep pressure and prepare for the best back cracking of your life. 84 FA L L 2019 B E T T E R

The Hoxton, Chicago thehoxton.com

Chicago has seen a slew of boutique hotel openings in the past year, but none quite as cool as The Hoxton in the Fulton Market District. It’s the British brand’s seventh property globally, with 182 rooms in just three room categories—snug, cozy and roomy. The industrial design is inspired by the building’s former meatpacking days and while the rooms are lovely (and come with daily breakfast bag delivery to your door), the hip communal spaces and restaurants helmed by two of Chicago’s most beloved chefs are where The Hoxton hangs its hat. Stephanie Izard’s rooftop Peruvian restaurant, Cabra Cevicheria, and Chris Pandel’s all-day Mediterranean cafe, Cira, are sure to be popular with locals and visitors alike. Boka Restaurant Group also runs the basement cocktail bar, Lazy Bird.

Viceroy Los Cabos

viceroyhotelsandresorts.com

Soon after reopening last year, the 194-room Viceroy Los Cabos (previously Mar Adentro) has become the sexy social hub of San José del Cabo once more. Modern architecture by Miguel Angel Aragonés includes minimalist white buildings and a restaurant that resembles a bird’s nest surrounded by reflection pools. Rooftop bar and restaurant

The hotel has a great downtown location, but it’s also become a dining and nightlife destination of its own, with locals and hotel guests clamoring for a cocktail at Snitch or a table at Dirty Little Secret, where live performances take center stage. THEATER THROUGH JAN. 5 Hamilton If you still haven’t seen “Hamilton,” don’t worry — there’s still time to jam out to Lin

Manuel-Miranda’s runaway hit. Make sure to snag tickets so you can watch America’s history unfold to some of the catchiest Broadway tunes in recent memory. See it at the CIBC Theatre downtown before it leaves Chicago. 18 W. Monroe

SEPT. 26 TO NOV. 10 Murder on the Nile Agatha Christie fans can’t miss this theatrical adaptation of “Murder on the Nile” at Oil Lamp Theater. It has a romantic honeymoon voyage turned disastrous, conspiracies, a lush setting, and, obviously, murder. 1725 Glenview Road, Glenview, (847) 8340738, oillamp theater.org SEPT. 28 TO OCT. 27 The Barber of Seville Rossini’s classic tale of a marriage gone awry is

back at the Lyric Opera of Chicago. One of the most beloved operatic comedies of all time, watch as Figaro, the crafty and hysterical barber of Seville, wreaks havoc as two men attempt to win the fair Rosina’s hand. 20 N. Wacker Drive, Chicago, (312) 332-2244, lyricopera.org OCTOBER 16-27 Jane Eyre at Joffrey Ballet This balletic adaptation of Bronte’s groundbreaking novel will have you falling in love all over again. The gorgeous Victorian tale was practically begging to be set to a romantic score

with vivid choreography that brings the entire cast of characters to life. Auditorium Theatre, 50 E. Ida B. Wells Drive, Chicago, (312) 3868905, joffrey.org NOV. 16 TO DEC. 29 A Christmas Carol Even the biggest Scrooge in your life won’t be able to resist Goodman Theatre’s “A Christmas Carol,” Dickens’ heartwarming tale of goodwill and peace on earth (not to mention karma). With gorgeous sets and costumes, the company brings “A Christmas Carol” to the stage for yet another unmissable season.

Dearborn St., Chicago, (312) 4433800, goodman theatre.org NOV. 30 TO DEC. 29 The Nutcracker It wouldn’t be the holiday season without the magical strains of the “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy.” Relive the magic of Christmas with the Joffrey’s classic interpretation of Tchaikovsky’s “The Nutcracker.” Auditorium Theatre, 50 E. Hamlet

THEATER AUG. 28-OCT. 20 Something Rotten! This zany show smashes together two pillars of the theatrical world: William Shakespeare and the Broadway musical. Set in 1595, it’s the story of two brothers desperate to write a hit play that will outdo the Bard. Following a 96 FA L L 2019 B E T T E R

ROBERT LOER ZEL

soothsayer’s advice, they write the world’s first musical. This musical about that musical made its Broadway premiere in 2015, jampacked with jokes about other musicals—and Shakespeare, of course. Marriott Theatre, 10 Marriott Drive, Lincolnshire, 847-634-0200, marriotttheatre.com

SEPT. 14-OCT. 20 Bernhardt/Hamlet Based on a true story from 1899, Theresa Rebeck’s play is unusually timely in 2019, adding to the many conversations about gender identity. Sarah Bernhardt, who was the world’s most famous actress at the time, caused a stir by playing the male title character

of Shakespeare’s “Hamlet.” This Chicago premiere will mark the Goodman Theatre debuts of director Donna Feore, a veteran of Ontario’s Stratford Festival, and lead actress Terri McMahon, known for her work at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. Goodman Theatre, 170 N. Dearborn St.,

SEPT. 25-DEC. 15 A Doll’s House Daring to depict a woman who feels trapped in her marriage, the Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen’s drama caused a “storm of outraged controversy” in 1879. In recent years, it has attracted new attention. Local playwright Rebecca Gilman reimagined it in 2005 at the Goodman (“Dollhouse”), and earlier this year, the Steppenwolf staged Lucas Hnath’s new sequel, “A Doll’s House, Part 2.” Now, Writers Theatre artistic director Michael Halberstam and esteemed local actress Sandra Delgado have created what they call a “focused” one-act adaptation. Lavina Jadhwani, who did a superb job with “Vietgone” at Writers last year, directs this intimate staging. Writers Theatre, 325 Tudor Court, Glencoe, 847-242-6000, writers theatre.org SEPT. 12-OCT. 20 The King’s Speech This play’s title is familiar from the 2010 movie, which won the Oscar for best picture with its

story about England’s King George VI learning to overcome his stammer. The author of that screenplay, David Seidler, also wrote this version for the stage, which a critic for London’s Guardian newspaper called “a cracking good story.” It’s now making its North American debut at Chicago Shakespeare, under the guidance of Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Award–winning director Michael Wilson. Chicago Shakespeare Theater, 800 E. Grand Ave., Chicago, 312-595-5600, chicagoshakes.com NOV. 7-DEC. 29 Lindiwe Ladysmith Black Mambazo teams up again with Steppenwolf Theatre, which produced past shows featuring this legendary South African singing group, including 1993’s acclaimed “The Song of Jacob Zulu.” The group will perform its marvelous music in this world premiere written and co-directed by ensemble member Eric Simonson, telling a love story that ranges from South Africa to Chicago’s Kingston Mines. Shedd’s annual gala helps support the aquarium’s conservation research work, like studying sharks in the Bahamas to understand what these predators need to thrive, since they are vital to maintaining healthy ocean ecosystems but are under threat of extinction from overfishing and other human impacts. Kids Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF.

Sometimes, when we are generous in small, barely detectable ways, it can change someone else’s life forever. Just one little orange box can become a vehicle for lifesaving change. Throughout October, kids, parents, and teachers across the country can be real superheroes by collecting donations big and small as part of Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF. As little as $1 can provide safe water to a child for more than two months; $3 can provide seven packets of therapeutic food; $5 can provide a pack of 10 notebooks; and $7 can provide one warm fleece blanket for a child. Visit TrickorTreatforUNICEF.org to download a DIY change box, donate online, or find an event near you. Share your story on social media with #TOT4UNICEF, #WeCanAllBeHeroes, and #KidsHelpingKids and tag @betterchicago on Instagram and @chicagobetter on Facebook and Twitter so we can help spread the love.
