KIRSTEN JONES NEFF / While researching the article “The Legacy of Marin City’s Grandmothers” (page 36) about the community’s elder women who inspired a new cookbook released to coincide with Marin City’s 80th-anniversary, Novato-based writer Kirsten Jones Neff was moved by the women she spoke with. “The Marin City ‘Grandmothers’ I met while working on this story exemplify strength, heart and grace,” Neff says. “Life has been difficult — weighted against them and their families at times — and yet they’ve kept their focus on the things that matter most: love, family, nourishment and community connection.”
KATE FORRESTER / Our Best of the County 2022 cover is the work of illustrator Kate Forrester, who specializes in hand-lettering. Her clients include Diet Coke, Chronicle Books and YouTube, but she found this assignment showcasing the wonders of Marin County particularly inspiring. “I’m blown away by Marin’s beautiful, diverse countryside and beaches, so my enthusiasm for the great outdoors was a starting point for my cover design,” Forrester says.
HEATHER YOUNG / Mill Valley-based writer Heather Young wrote “A Woman’s Place” (page 27) about the history of Mill Valley’s Outdoor Art Club, where she’s been a member since 2015. “It was founded at a time when women, lacking the right to vote and any realistic hope of holding political office, could only advocate for the causes they cared about by influencing the men who controlled all the direct channels of political power,” Young says. “And today, when rights I’ve enjoyed since I was born are under threat, looking back at a time when women were shut out of the political process reminds me never to take for granted the rights our mothers and grandmothers fought so hard to win.”
JEANNE COOPER / It’s not the first time travel writer Jeanne Cooper has driven the stunning stretch of California’s Highway 1 from Pacifica to Carmel, the focus of her article “Hit the Road” (page 91) — and it definitely won’t be the last. “This part of the California coastline is special because however gorgeous one beach or scenic view is, there’s always another around the bend to enjoy,” she says. “This time, my most memorable meal was dinner at Pacific’s Edge in the Carmel Highlands, thanks to the heady combination of delicious food, a great view and a good friend dining with me.”

Moderated by Cheryl Berman, chief creative and CEO of Unbundled Creative, the event featured an all-women panel: Kathy Roeser, managing director and wealth advisor of Morgan Stanley; Monica Gray-Fong, chief operating officer Cheryl and cofounder of Nice Guys Delivery; Dr. Jordan CarBerman queville, founder and medical director of The Derm Institute of Chicago; and Maureen Sedonean, CEO of Habitat for Humanity Greater San Francisco. Industrywise, they come from diverse places, from philanthropy to finance, though all have the same common denominator: They’ve navigated a career in fields that are otherwise predominantly male. Each member of the discussion was given time to recount how her career has unfolded over the years — from setbacks to accomplishments. For Gray-Fong, the first speaker of the event, her marathon began fresh out of college when she landed her first job in the fashion industry after facing the age-old question, “What now?” After shifting between states, relationships and careers, Gray-Fong found herself striking up a cannabis delivery company with her husband — all while raising a young family — but this resting point in her career did not come without difficulty. Similarly, Dr. Carqueville went on to explain the serendipitous nature of the breakthrough in her career that was nurtured by a fellow woman in her field. At the intersection of change in her career and in her personal life, she ran into the CEO of the hospital she had been working for. When Dr. Carqueville relayed her worries, her superior’s response was simple, “I will help you. Email me.” And so she did, which led to an in-person meeting, which led to relief from some of her stressors and an alignment of opportunities she “thought was impossible.” The concept of women supporting each other or being strongholds for support in their families and close circles was echoed by Roeser — who wove into the conversation statistics about women and how they navigate finances. Roeser noted that women who are successful in helming their financial affairs do so with “road-mapping,” or making conscious lists of must-dos and logistics.

The checklist she uses to help “empower” her clients is broken down categorically into a multitude of steps — sometimes even up to 20 — most often covering:

Safety and documentation An overarching theme to Roeser’s pitch was intentionality, specifically being prepared for the uncertain — such as untimely death, illness or other unexpected changes to your financial situation. Intentionality, too, is something Sedonean brings to the table every day. As the CEO of Habitat for Humanity Great San Francisco, she has recognized that without that direct thoughtfulness for the people she and the organization serve, she would be doing them a disservice. “I realized, one of the things that is important to be a leader and to have impact is to be a learner, and to continue to be a life-long learner. I’ve learned so much about…most importantly, that direct connection and impact on families and young people.” Berman brought the conversation to a close by asking each panelist to share what her goals are, either immediate or long term. improving playgrounds, cleaning up litter, and urging conservation lessons in schools. They accomplished these things through the “soft” advocacy that was, at the time, the only politicking women were allowed to do,. They threw fundraisers that became go-to social events. They hosted lectures at which powerful men might listen to a word about protecting local wildlife. They used social connections with the town’s trustees. The best example of their quiet but effective influence may be the club’s little-known role in the creation of the Muir Woods National Monument. In 1904, the Tamalpais Land and Water Company offered a parcel of old-growth redwoods for sale. The Outdoor Art Club wanted to buy it, but they couldn’t raise the funds. Instead, the North Coast Water Company, which planned to log the trees and dam Redwood Creek, made an offer. Fortunately, the president of the Tamalpais Land and Water Company, Lovell White, was married to The Outdoor Art Club cofounder Laura Lyon White. Lovell sold the land to William Kent, a progressive friend of Laura’s, for less than half of
North Coast’s bid. Historians credit Laura with convincing her husband to make this unprofitable sale, perhaps using one of the oldest forms of feminine persuasion. According to her descendants, Laura agreed to have a third child, at the age of 40, only if her husband would financially support the causes she championed — causes like saving an old-growth forest in a neighboring valley. Today, the women of The Outdoor Art Club are not limited to the power of the salon, the supper table and the bedroom. Its members are businesspeople, teachers, artists, volunteers, elected officials and activists who influence their community in many ways. But their club’s history asks us to remember a time when women didn’t have these opportunities, and to appreciate its founders, women who, despite being barred from the halls of government, used a club their husbands often derided as “social” to change Marin for the better. The Outdoor Art Club, a Mill Valley nonprofit dedicated to environmental and other civic causes, celebrates its 120th anniversary this month. Founded as a women’s club in 1902, its early history is one of quiet political power wielded by women who could not vote, and for whom clubs like The Outdoor Art Club were one of the few avenues by which they could influence their communities. The year 1902 was the height of the Progressive Conservation Movement, a groundswell of environmental activism that fought to save America’s remaining wild spaces from unchecked commercial expansion. History celebrates its male leaders, like John Muir and Theodore Roosevelt, but often ignores the contributions of women’s clubs, whose members were the movement’s foot soldiers. The Women’s Save the Redwoods League in Humboldt County, for example, preserved the old-growth redwoods that became the Avenue of the Giants. San Francisco’s California Club joined with other women’s clubs to protect the Calaveras Grove of Big Trees and create Big Basin State Park. The Outdoor Art Club was born out of a similar passion for conservation, as a group of Mill Valley women united to protect the redwoods and open spaces near their town. One summer afternoon in 1902, four women came upon workmen chopping down the redwood grove that had shaded Mill Valley’s railroad depot. Shocked at this destruction of natural beauty, they formed a club by which, in the words of cofounder Agnes Cappelman, “the ladies of Mill Valley… might have a word to say in such a matter.” In their mission statement, they pledged “to preserve the natural scenery of Mill Valley and of the surrounding country, to beautify the grounds around public buildings, [and]… to create public sentiment against the wanton destruction of birds and game.” They had their work cut out for them. Mill Valley, like the rest of Marin, was booming. As civil engineers drew grids for new streets, The Outdoor Art Club threw itself into the fray, advocating for urban parks and green spaces, planting trees along the new avenues,

Cinelounge Opens in Tiburon In an effort to bring style back to cinema, owner and creative director Christian Meoli and his wife and creative partner, Camilla Jackson, revived Tiburon’s former Playhouse, which opened last month as Cinelounge (cineloungecinemas.com). “We want to be a bridge between home and theater entertainment,” Meoli says. The couple stayed at the Water’s Edge Hotel while attending the Mill Valley Film Festival a few years ago (they lived in Los Angeles at the time), and saw potential in the shuttered building, a chance to recreate the Golden Age of cinema, when going to the movies was an experience — “film as it was meant to be experienced,” says Meoli, who founded the Arena Cinelounge art house cinema in Los Angeles in 2012. Tiburon’s Cinelounge and its three theaters are individually designed. Cinema One features 7.1 Dolby digital surround sound and a 30-foot canvas screen onto which a 4K laser projector will broadcast big studio or “tent pole” movies. Step up

Riding the Waves of Time Gracing everything from car bumper stickers to sweatshirts and hats, Live Water Surf Shop’s iconic “No Shark” logo is recognizable far beyond its Marin County roots. The logo, which features a great white shark in a red circle with a slash across it, was designed by Live Water Surf Shop founder Kirby Ferris back in the summer of 1981, when great white shark sightings closed Stinson Beach, where the shop is located, for a number of days, disrupting business. Missing the beach, local surfers soon slapped the stickers on their bumpers in a show of solidarity, and since then, the logo has made its way around the world, according to current Live Water Surf Shop owner Brenna Gubbins. “People come to the shop from all over, and we also sell online, so we’re constantly sending gear with the logo to other states,” Gubbins says. One thing Gubbins wants to clarify however, is that in no way is Live Water Surf Shop anti-shark. “We love sharks, just not when we’re surfing, please,” she laughs. When Gubbins bought Live Water Surf Shop from Ferris’ ex-wife in 2007, she found it filled with a treasure trove of old issues of The Surfer’s Journal, article clippings and art by local artists — a legacy she intends to preserve. Although she added a second location in Fairfax in 2013 that sells skateboards and gear in addition to surfboards, wetsuits and beach attire, the Stinson location is still located in historic Avilla’s Barn. Gubbins says not a lot has changed since the shop’s early days (it opened in 1978), much to the gratitude of loyal locals and visitors alike. “We get tourists from all over the world and other states, and many people come in to share stories about what the shop has meant to them,” she says. “Throughout the years, so much has remained the same. It’s a well-oiled machine that’s continued on for so many years, and I’m just overseeing it now.” — LOTUS ABRAMS

A doghouse designed by Frank Lloyd Wright is now on view at the Marin County Civic Center.
In the Doghouse Frank Lloyd Wright fans now have a new reason, albeit a “small” one, to visit the Marin County Civic Center in San Rafael. The Civic Center, the last and largest existing building Wright ever designed, and one of his most notable projects, now houses the smallest structure he designed: a doghouse that once belonged to former Marin resident Jim Berger. Berger grew up in San Anselmo in a Usonian-style home (now known as the Berger House) that his parents had commissioned Wright to design in 1950–51. In 1956, then 12-year-old Berger wrote to Wright asking for plans for a doghouse for his Labrador retriever, Eddie, that would complement the home’s design. Wright provided plans for the 4-square-foot doghouse free of charge, written on the back of an envelope, and the Berger family built the structure themselves. “Eddie’s doghouse was originally constructed with scraps of Philippine mahogany and cedar left over from the Berger house construction, and was inspired by the house’s hexagonal shape,” says Libby Garrison, who handles marketing and communications for the County of Marin Department of Cultural Services. “The doghouse displays many Wright design elements, including a low-pitched roof with an exaggerated overhang, the signature floor color of Taliesin (Cherokee) red and the deliberate intention of the angles of structure.” Several years later, however, the unused doghouse was discarded. “The fun fact about the doghouse is that Eddie never slept in it; he wanted to be inside the main Berger house with the rest of the family,” Garrison says. Berger and his brother, Eric Berger, rebuilt the doghouse in 2010 from the original plans for a documentary film about Wright, and donated it to the county several years later. In May, the county unveiled its display for the doghouse inside the Civic Center’s cafeteria, where families can design their own animal house inspired by the Wright doghouse as part of the experience. And after a two-year Covid-19 break, visitors can also once again sign up for docent tours of the Civic Center, offered at 10:30 a.m. every Friday. CHOOSING CHILDCARE
How to navigate the challenges and resources for finding childcare in Marin County. Owen Rhoades was still in utero when his parents, Amy and Dave Rhoades started their search for childcare in Marin County. As a product manager with HealthLine, a health media company based in San Francisco, Amy had four months of maternity leave before returning to work full-time. Dave is the director of workplace at Intercom, also in San Francisco. Amy recalls just how difficult it was to find childcare for Owen. “Initially, I wanted to do a nanny share,” she says. “The idea of one-on-one attention was appealing.” Amy joined the Nannies and Mommies Bay Area Facebook group, but soon discovered most nanny and nanny-share arrangements are confirmed just a month prior to starting. “That just made me way too nervous,” she says. “I didn’t want to be in a situation where I didn’t have care when I needed it, so I shifted my attention to finding a daycare.” The Care Conundrum There are 299 licensed childcare facilities in Marin County, about an equal number of family childcare homes and childcare centers; however, as Amy learned, very few childcare centers offer infant care. Of the 20 daycare centers she contacted, only two responded to let her know they had space available when she needed it. “I wasn’t interested in looking at home daycare,” Amy says. “I felt more comforted by the idea of a daycare facility that might be more regulated and have a bit more accountability.” The primary reason childcare centers don’t offer care for infants is that it’s cost-prohibitive, according to Aideen Gaidmore, executive director at the Marin Childcare Council (MC3). “It’s very expensive for childcare programs to offer infant care because of the required caregiver-to-child ratios, so the choice of centers is limited,” she says. A Challenge Nationwide Parents around the country are facing similar challenges finding appropriate childcare. According to

a report by ChildCare Aware of America, (CCAoA), an advocacy group working with state and local childcare resource and referral agencies to ensure that families in every local community have access to quality, affordable childcare, “Parents who already had limited options for affordable, highquality childcare before the pandemic are facing even fewer options today.” Not all the news is bleak, though. CCAoA finds a silver lining in the attention finally being paid to the importance of childcare to our communities. They report, “A groundswell of support among voters and policymakers for continued investments in childcare has emerged.” Securing a Spot Thankfully, new facilities are opening. Amy was fortunate enough to discover a daycare center opening in San Rafael just in time to accept Owen into their program. “We were so excited,” she says. “After the tour, we immediately put a $700 deposit down to secure our spot. It felt good to be through this process. I broke down crying when we got back to the car. I was so relieved.” For other parents interested finding a childcare center in Marin County that fits their needs, MC3’s mission is to improve the availability, accessibility
and affordability of quality early childhood education and care. “We help parents navigate childcare in the county and support them through the process,” Gaidmore says. While MC3 does not recommend specific programs, they maintain an up-to-date database of every licensed provider in Marin County, as well as offering resources for local families, including a checklist to use when evaluating facilities. Another resource is CCAoA, which publishes informative guides for parents to use to find high-quality childcare for children from infancy through school age. “You will find the right facility,” Aideen assures. “You may tour a lot of programs, but since your daycare provider is an extension of your home, make sure you have a good relationship with the people who will take care of your baby.” — SUSAN SOLOMON YEM

Mill Valley-based international women’s advocate, photojournalist and author Paola Gianturco brings female environmental leaders to the forefront in her new book, Cool: Women Leaders Reversing Global Warming. BY JESSICA GLIDDON AND PAULA FARMER

frequently as men.” For her latest book, Mill Valley resident Paola Gianturco and her 12-year-old granddaughter and co-author, Avery Sangster, interviewed and photographed heads of grassroots organizations, activists, politicians, corporate executives, scholars and presidents of nonprofits around the world. Gianturco has documented women’s lives in 62 countries and published six books, codeveloped and taught Executive Institutes on Women and Leadership at Stanford University, served on the board of the Association for Women’s Rights in Development, and is a member of International Women’s Forum. In 2017, the YWCA inducted her into the Marin Women’s Hall of Fame. We spoke with the author about her new book. Marin Magazine (MM): Why did you decide to highlight female climate leaders in this book? Paola Gianturco (PG): “All too often, women’s activism is virtually invisible. Women leaders globally are showing us the way to a sustainable future. I also discovered new studies that document the fact that women are particularly effective at causing positive environmental change. I hoped that their stories and suggestions would inspire readers to take climate action since, although people are aware of climate change, they are not yet taking enough action to stop it.” MM: It must have been an amazing experience speaking with these women. What was your favorite thing about working on the project? PG: “It was — we interviewed women planting mangrove trees in Sri Lanka, the Lord Mayor of Sydney Australia, an Inuit activist in the Arctic, and the vice president of Lego in Denmark. I particularly enjoyed getting to know the women, since, in addition to being inspiring, effective leaders, they’re interesting individuals.”
It has been shown that women are especially effective leaders when it comes to combating global warming. Christiana Figueres and Tom Rivett-Carnac, architects of the 2015 Paris Agreement, report that “Nations with greater female representation in positions of power have smaller climate footprints. Companies with women on their executive boards are more likely to invest in renewable energy and develop products that help solve the climate crisis. Women legislators vote for environmental protections almost twice as

Avery lives in Los Angeles and saw wildfires incinerate the hills adjacent to the 405 freeway two years in a row. She organized her sixth-grade classmates and created a website that would educate and inspire kids to take climate action. Frankly, I couldn’t imagine writing about climate change without including a young person’s

The Legacy of MARIN CITY’S GRANDMOTHERS A new cookbook is part of the community’s 80th-anniversary celebrations. BY KIRSTEN JONES NEFF
Eighty years ago, temporary housing was constructed in the farmland on the east side of Highway 101 to accommodate workers who had migrated from across the country to build World War II ships in the Sausalito Shipyard, and the town of Marin City was born. This summer, Marin City is celebrating its 80th anniversary with a series of events, publications and exhibits that honor the rich history that makes Marin’s only majorityBlack community what it is today. In addition, local leaders are initiating a campaign to establish the Marin City Historical and Preservation Society and Marin City Museum. One important part of Marin City’s legacy stems from its elder women residents, known affectionately as “the grandmothers,” who arrived in Marin City in the early years, built the community’s foundation and have nurtured it for decades, according to Felecia Gaston, codirector of the #MarinCity80 celebration (in collaboration with activist and musician Jahi Torman). It’s these dedicated women who are celebrated in a keepsake cookbook entitled Grandmothers Feed Us Love: Celebrating the Legacy of Marin City’s Grandmothers Through Cherished Recipes and Photos. “They are the dynasty of Marin City,” writes Gaston, the founder of the Marin City-based nonprofit Performing Stars and editor of the cookbook, in the forward. “They are to be forever revered.” Gaston arrived in Marin City in 1989, and says she felt right at home because of the support of the older generation of women. “I was a single mother with two sons, and they helped me raise my sons; that’s just who these women are,” she says. “They’re survivors with true dignity and class. They made the best with what they had. And, most of all, they always cooked the best soul food for their family and friends.”
Grandmothers Feed Us Love features 146 women, 25 of whom are still living, and describes in brief where each woman was born and how many children, grandchildren, and great and great-great grandchildren they have. It also includes favorite recipes from these grandmothers, an ideal metaphor for the sustenance, culinary and otherwise, they’ve provided for the community. “So many of these women prepared food with ‘a little of this or a little of that, a pinch of this, and a pinch of that,’ tasting their food while cooking, making do with what ingredients they had at hand,” Gaston says. The women’s histories offer insight into the culture that developed as many Black shipyard workers, unable to purchase homes in other parts of Marin due to racist restrictions, stayed in Marin City after the war. Eighty-seven-year-old Wyna Barron moved to the Marin City temporary housing units in 1942 when she was a young girl. Barron, who contributed her Fried Apple/ Peach Pie recipe to the cookbook, was born in 1935 in Henderson, Texas. At first, her parents went ahead to Marin City to find work, and Barron stayed in Texas with her grandmother. Her mother, Vivian Barron, whose recipe for Vivian’s Booneville Apple Cake is also included in the cookbook, found a job at the Palace Hotel in San Francisco, while Wyna’s father, Theo Barron, worked for Bethlehem Steel as part of the WWII Liberty Ship building effort. Wyna was 7 years old when her grandmother brought her to join her parents. Barron’s grandmother, Roxie Ann Hillman, cared for her while both her parents worked, and she recalls the other elders in the community collectively looked out for the children of the neighborhood. “All the parents of that generation were working, so families took care of each other,” Barron says. “If any of the grandparents saw misbehaving children, they were always free to say something.” When the war ended, Barron’s parents, and others in their generation, didn’t want to return to the Jim Crow racism of the South. While many white shipyard workers purchased homes in nearby towns, redlining meant that Black people had to stay in Marin City or leave Marin. “There was racism in California, but it wasn’t as bad as Texas racism, so my parents stayed and fought for many years for Marin City to become a permanent community,” Barron says. In the 1960s, Barron’s parents moved into a pole home on the hillside, where Barron lives today.

Lillian Hebert, whose German Chocolate Cake recipe is featured in the cookbook, was born in Brusly, Louisiana, in 1930, and came to Marin City with her husband in 1953 looking for work. At the time, Hebert’s husband was a carpenter, and Herbert was a domestic worker. “We moved into the barracks for the shipyard workers, and we all knew each other there. We had all come from the South looking for work; we were all working for something more than what we had,” Herbert says. “Marin City was a place we could always leave the doors open. The ice man would come by and put ice in our refrigerator. We would leave our doors open because there was no such thing as people robbing each other.” Eighty-nine-year-old Anne Robinson came from a family of Italian immigrants in Youngstown, Ohio, and contributed her recipe for Pizzelles to the book. In 1955, wanting to escape what she saw as closedminded thinking of Youngstown, Robinson joined the Air Force, where she met her husband, Marin City native Glen Robinson, who passed away in 2005. At the time, the couple had to keep their interracial relationship secret. “We were afraid we’d get killed, so we kept the relationship a secret and snuck around to see each other,” Robinson says. Both Anne and Glen were stationed at the Air Force base in Hayward, so they would go to Marin City on the weekends, where Anne was warmly welcomed by Glen’s family. “We spent a lot of our time in Marin City, where Glen’s family and all of our friends were, so that was our community,” Robinson says. When the Air Force found out Glen planned to marry Anne, a white woman, they sent him to Eielson Air Force base outside of Fairbanks, Alaska. The couple moved to Eielson together and had their first child there before returning to Marin City, and eventually found an affordable house to buy from friends who lived in Mill Valley. But as an interracial couple with biracial children, they were fearful about the move. “We had heard that the first Black

for 22 years, and Glen became a community leader, appointed by Jimmy Carter as the first Black person to head a U.S. Marshal’s office (for the Northern California region) and serving on the Marin County Board of Education for 40 years. It’s the life stories of these three grandmothers that Gaston hopes to preserve. Marin City is the only Marin County town without a historical society, and a goal of the #MarinCity80 program is to launch a capital campaign to create one, as well as the Marin City Museum. Only an hour south of central Marin, Pacifica provides a convenient, scenic and affordable choice to overnight, especially if you can’t get on the road until after work on Friday. Spending a night at the smartly renovated Inn at Rockaway Beach (innatrockaway.com; from $259), a mere 100 yards or so from the ocean, reveals a nearby path for cyclists and pedestrians that winds above Rockaway Beach and down to the broad sands of Linda Mar, as legions of surfers and locals dub Pacifica State Beach. Signs along the 1-mile paved trail through a restored habitat identify native species such as California buckwheat and coastal gum plant. A little farther south off ighway 1 is one of two trailheads for the Devil’s Slide Trail, a 1.3-mile stretch of former roadway. Open to equestrians, cyclists and pedestrians since 2014, following the creation of the Tom Lantos Tunnels through Montara Mountain, the narrow and sinuous pavement above the ocean offers jaw-dropping views of the coastline and sometimes, humpback whales and peregrine falcons. Another Pacifica bonus: toasting sunset with a cocktail at Puerto 27 (puerto27.com), a two-story, indoor-outdoor restaurant and bar on a hill overlooking the beach at Linda Mar. The Taco Bell at the beach’s southern end may be better known, but it doesn’t boast the ceviche and fritaduras (fritters) that pair so well with a pisco sour, made with Peru’s signature white brandy.

HALF MOON BAY TO SANTA CRUZ
Head south toward Santa Cruz, making a pitstop for the decadent weekend brunch and sweeping coastal views at The Ritz-Carlton Half Moon Bay’s Navio restaurant, or opt for a casual-chic meal at The Conservatory, both overseen by newly appointed executive chef Roberto Riveros Leyton. Luxurious ocean-view suites, some with firepits, as well as two world-class golf courses, make it tempting to stay the night as well (ritzcarlton.com; from $754). About half an hour south is Pigeon Point, home to a 115-foot lighthouse and the HI Pigeon Point Lighthouse Hostel, currently operating its multiroom cottages as private vacation rentals, rather than the typical shared lodgings (hiusa.org; private double rooms from $152, whole house rentals from $400). A secluded cliffside hot tub allows guests to soak while the beacon illuminates the oftenthunderous surf. Now part of a State Historic Park, the lighthouse itself has sadly been closed to visitors since 2001, awaiting structural repairs. You may still walk around its base, however, and view the displays in the recently refurbished oil bunker, including an intriguing swath of baleen, the hairlike fringe found in the mouths of the whales once hunted here. Jump back in the car to drive to Santa Cruz, another 45 minutes south. Start off y exploring downtown, ambling through the food stalls of Abbott Square Market (abbottsquaremarket.com) and the thoughtful exhibitions of adjacent Santa Cruz Museum of Art and History (santacruzmah. org), nicknamed the MAH. The indoor market with courtyard seating opened in 2017, part of the MAH’s efforts to add vitality to the area. The MAH’s

After heeding all the travel advisories for two summers, deciding where to go this season can present a fun quandary: Return to a much-missed destination, or explore a new one? Either way, the gorgeous coastline from Pacifica to Carmel provides an irresistible lure for a weekend getaway and confirms that composer Peter Allen was right: "Everything Old Is New Again."

captivating "Strange Weather: From the Collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and His Family Foundation," is on view through Aug. 14. Including works from 1970 to 2020, the exhibition plumbs the connections between the human body and climate change, among other modern woes. The Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk (beachboard walk.com) has happily changed little in the past couple of decades. Its landmark Looff arousel, built in 1911, still spins a charming spell with 73 hand-carved horses, original organ and a dispenser of “brass” rings (nowadays stainless steel) to throw in the clown’s mouth as you whirl by. After a long hiatus, the Boardwalk has brought back free live music on Thursday nights at the Colonnade, through Aug. 11, and classic movie screenings on the beach Friday nights, through Aug. 12. The surfer-chic Dream Inn and its regionally sourced Jack O’Neill restaurant, renovated in 2019, provide a good excuse to overnight here, too (dream innsantacruz.com; from $427).
MOSS LANDING TO CARMEL
Moss Landing, a half-hour south of Santa Cruz, is famed for easy access to whale-watching in Monterey Bay and wildlife-watching in Elkhorn Slough. At Salinas River State Beach, if you see tour boats hovering close to shore, or harbor seals bobbing like bowling pins, a pod of orcas might be on the prowl. Monterey Bay Eco Tours (montereybayecotours.com) offers the only electric-powered catamaran to ply the saltwater slough, a former river basin cut off rom its freshwater source by a shifting fault millennia ago. Ninety-minute excursions on the quiet, stable boat typically treat guests to the antics of harbor seals, sea otters, sea lions, brown pelicans, murres and many other birds that frequent the slough’s marshy banks. A pit-stop at Pezzini Farms (pezzinifarms.com), 10 minutes south in Castroville, is a must for artichoke aficionados — make sure to try the deep-fried artichoke hearts and artichoke lumpia. Then, walk off he calories on the deserted sandy trail and 4-mile beach of Fort Ord Dunes State Park, hidden inside the long-closed military facility in Marina. Once in Carmel, working off alories could be a fool’s errand, however. The newly casual but still regionally sourced Pacific’s Edge restaurant at Hyatt Carmel Highlands (hyatt.com; from $585) has always rewarded diners with dazzling sunsets and sweeping vistas of craggy Point Lobos State Natural Reserve. Enjoy both with gambas al ajillo, prawns with local garlic, grape tomatoes and gigante beans served with crusty bread; pan-seared halibut with a tangy, rich citrus risotto; or a juicy, thick hamburger. Before departing Carmel, enjoy a meal at Stationaery (thestationaery.com), a hip all-day brunch bistro tucked into San Carlos Square. Created by spouses Anthony and Alissa Carnazzo in 2018, Stationaery has quickly become a local favorite. Now it will be one of yours, too — and yet another reason for a Highway 1 road trip.

A good swimming hole can make you feel like Mother Nature’s favorite child. Framed by boulders or sometimes a sandy beach, otherwise raging rivers slow down, take a breather, and invite you to do the same. Splash off a hot rock and feel icy water buzz your skin like electricity, the current massaging your muscles like a whirlpool. Here are some of our favorite cool pools, all driving distance from the Bay Area, with parking and facilities nearby, too. Jump in!

Once a stagecoach toll stop, then a popular resort, this site near Yosemite National Park’s Big Oak Flat entrance gate is now nothing more than a jumble of rocks and a spectacular waterfall-fed swimming hole. Cool down here after a hot day in the park. (Although if you want to avoid the crowds, go in the morning.) Some people call this sweet spot Rainbow Pools, as there is a second, smaller pool at the top of the waterfall, however people have fallen from the rocks there with tragic consequences, so it’s best to stick to the lower pool. Access and amenities: The swimming spot is located just off Highway 120, 15 minutes from Yosemite’s Big Oak Flat entrance gate. It’s $8 per car to park May– Sept., free other times; vault toilets; open 6 a.m.–8 p.m.

Standish-Hickey State Recreation Area, Mendocino County The steep path down to this deep swimming hole may seem daunting, but once you’re reclining on the beach, you’ll forget all about the trek. Rocks and ledges on the opposite bank provide launching points for jumpers, although park rules forbid jumping and diving. (Note: Check with the ranger station whether blue-green algae toxins are at dangerous levels.) Access and amenities: The swimming hole is located 180 miles north of San Francisco along Highway 101, 1.5 miles north of the town of Leggett. The day use fee is $8 per car; open sunrise–sunset; book campsites, $35 a night, at ReserveCalifornia (reservecalifornia.com).
BIG SUR RIVER GORGE
Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park, Monterey County One of the things that makes the campground at Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park so popular is the Big Sur River running through it, though water levels may be low at certain times of year. To reach the bigger Big Sur River Gorge swimming hole, you need to hike a bit. It's a delightful splashpad, though plenty of others may be looking to cool off n a warm afternoon as well, so don't expect to have it all to yourself. Access and amenities: Start in the campground or at Day Use Lot 3 and take the Gorge Trail to the river. Then, follow the river upstream, wading to switch sides as necessary, until you come to the shallow swimming hole with walls of granite. $10 day use fee per car; open 8 a.m.–sunset. Calaveras Big Trees State Park, Calaveras County Most day trippers never venture beyond the North Grove Trail, a pleasant meander through towering giant sequoias near the park's entrance. Drive past it, however, to find a picnic area with a path leading to a sandy beach and snowpack-fed swimming spot. Boulders in the river provide a break from the current, depending on the water level. “River levels and current can vary,” says Amber Sprock, a park interpreter. Access and amenities: From the park entrance, drive 5.5 miles into the park to the River Picnic Area, where a short path leads from the parking lot to the swimming hole. The day use fee is $10 per car; open 6 a.m.–10 p.m. Campsites, $25-$35, can be booked at ReserveCalifornia.

Opening August 20, The Legacy of Marin City, 1942–1962, at Marin Center’s Bartolini Gallery considers the memorabilia of Black shipyard workers with a virtual-reality experience, soundtrack listening stations and historical knowledge around housing discrimination; through October 20. A second exhibit, The Housing History, 1942–1962, at Marin Civic Center Board of Supervisors 3rd floor and 1st floor lobbies, tells the story of Frank Lloyd Wright protégé Aaron Greene, who architected Marin City’s Golden Gate Village and looks at the continual fight for housing rights and equality through community artifacts and artwork and at discriminatory issues such as redlining and whitewashing; opening August 20. Marin-based organization 10,000 Degrees, which is dedicated to empowering students to enter and graduate college in Marin and six other Bay Area counties, held its annual One Amazing Community fundraiser gala in May at the Bill and Adele Jonas Center at Novato’s College of Marin campus. Simultaneously, it held five smaller satellite soirees around the Bay Area. The event raised $1.1 million. The gala program included an appearance by California Senator Mike McGuire, who served as guest auctioneer, plus a live performance by musical artist Kaila Love. Students from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music treated the audience to a jazz performance. Lisa Wittke Schaffner, CEO of North Coast Builders Exchange and board trustee of the Sonoma County Office of Education, was presented with the prestigious One Degree of Change award. She was recognized for her deep commitment and advocacy for youth, education and community in Sonoma County.

Beyond Differences Promotes Culture of Belonging for All Students On April 14, about 175 individuals gathered for an evening of fun, friendship, food and fundraising for Beyond Differences at Michael Mina’s new restaurant in Tiburon, The Bungalow Kitchen, where they enjoyed delectable food and signature cocktails such as the Seagulls Landing and the Spicy Pina. Laura Talmus and her husband Ace Smith cofounded the nonprofit in 2010 in honor of their daughter, who was born with a rare craniofacial syndrome, and often ignored and misunderstood by her peers. By the end of the evening, supporters donated $500,000 to help the organization continue its yearround, free programs and lesson plans for 9,000 schools, as well as national awareness days on embracing differences. The verdant valley view and distant mountains are what drew Margret and Brett Hunter to their 1960s ranch-style home in Novato four years ago. The floor plan, however, not so much. A major renovation was needed to make it work for their retirement lifestyle. “The dining room, living room and kitchen were three separate rooms, so it was not set up very well for entertaining,” Margret recalls. “And the style was very mishmash. I wanted a more cohesive look.” To achieve those goals, they brought in designer Lori Henle, whose firm, Lori Henle Interiors, is based in Kentfield. “My challenge was to unify the overall flow and design of the home, design better storage solutions and create a modern yet soothing environment my clients would enjoy spending time in,” she says. The project included remodeling the kitchen, living room and master bath while also updating flooring, moldings and recessed lighting throughout. The new design scheme was inspired by the Hunters’ love of the beach, surf and nature, with materials chosen for their longevity and timelessness. Last remodeled in the 1970s, the galleystyle kitchen bore original cabinetry and aging appliances. It was closed off rom the dining room, and the pantry was inconveniently located in the hallway. Creating a more optimal traffic flow, the wall separating the kitchen and dining room was opened, and the doorway from the hallway to the kitchen was enlarged to 8 feet wide. A new U-shaped layout with a peninsula counter increases storage capacity while providing casual seating. The pantry was moved to an interior side wall. Above the cooktop, the patterned cement tile adds a dash of Old World charm. “The custom white oak Shaker-style cabinet doors with black matte hardware were selected for their ability to age nicely over time,” Henle says. The entire living room was transformed by a do-over off he fireplace wall, where a raised hearth projected about 20 inches into the space. A sleek new flush-mount gas insert with large-screen television above is faced with porcelain tiles from Walker Zanger, and

book-ended with custom built-ins that match the kitchen cabinetry. “She had a pretty swivel chair I wanted to flank the fireplace,” Henle says. “In order to do that, we had to remove the hearth and give more space there.” The original primary bath was awkwardly configured with a corner framed shower and a door that opened from the hallway, which allowed little privacy when guests were CONNECT WITH US ONLINE!
visiting. Henle’s creative solution was to relocate the door to the primary bedroom, thus creating a private en-suite. A frameless glass shower was positioned closer to the window to take advantage of natural light. She designed a custom white oak vanity with dual sinks, a clean apron front and Caeserstone quartz counter. Installed above the vanity is a large light-up mirror with a spacesmag.com/subscribe
defogger feature, flanked by twin pendant lights by Kelly Wearstler. The designer then artfully wrapped the space in contrasting tile patterns — chevrons, hexes and mosaics — which add playfulness and textural interest. “My clients lean toward modern lines but also enjoy pattern,” Henle says. “I incorporated pattern in a subtle way, often in tone-on-tone.” The primary bedroom required cosmetic refreshes to help it coordinate with the rest of the home. The walls were painted soft gray. The serene color palette is enhanced with the addition of a hand-knotted area rug and table lamps from Pottery Barn, and the slatted end-of-bed bench from Crate & Barrel. The layered window treatment is streamlined in appearance yet functional around the clock. The outer layer is a flat linen Roman shade with a blackout lining for sleeping, and the inner layer is a light-filtering roller shade. “That way they have privacy during the daytime while still letting the light come through,” Henle says. A side opening from the entrance hall to the dining room was closed off o create a focal point and a place to pause upon stepping into the home. The wood-topped console by Crate and Barrel and hand-knotted jute rug by Restoration Hardware offer a stimulating contrast to the clean, contemporary lines of the drum-style light fixture by Rejuvenation. Building height in the compact space is a vertically positioned mirror, also by Crate & Barrel. The mixed media artwork by Sausalito-based artist Kathryn Keller “makes you feel connected to the whole color palette,” Henle says. The project, which took about four months, was completed shortly after Covid19 lockdowns went into place. “I’m glad we got it done,” Hunter says. “We got to enjoy it when we were housebound for a year.
