CHAMBER PRESIDENT
WELCOME
Greetings from the Winnetka-Northfield Chamber of Commerce. We are always proud of our annual Community Guide, and especially this year as it was produced and published by our friends at Make It Better Media, a local Winnetka business. Please take a few moments to peruse this guide. I am always amazed at the diversity and quality of our shops and services. We are so fortunate and blessed to live, learn and grow in these communities. Our schools, our police and firemen, our parks and park districts, our churches and, last but not least, our wonderful merchants. From haute couture to haute cuisine, from tacos to pizza, from gifts and grocery to jewelry and juices, our merchants have it all! The role of your Chamber of Commerce is to promote the goals and services (and success!) of our merchants, and the chamber does this in a manner of ways. In addition to hosting networking meetings like our monthly “Business For Breakfast” at the Community House, and the always popular “Let’s Do Lunch” at one of our local restaurants, the chamber stages a number of successful and entertaining events each year: • The Recognition Luncheon (April) honors outstanding men and women for their service to our communities. • The Farmers’ Market (May to October) in Northfield is one of the longestrunning markets on the north shore, and provides excellent advertising, marketing and retail opportunities. • The Sidewalk Sale (July) is one of the most popular events for both merchants and residents. • “Let Loose On Lincoln” (July) has become a celebratory and fun tradition, with great music and great food. • The Golf Outing (September), held at Evanston Country Club, is a late-summer tradition and is a great networking event. • The Holiday Sale (December), also known as The Red Invitation Sale, promotes many of our merchants at the beginning of the holiday season, and reminds residents to “Think Local, Shop Local, Buy Local.” Each December the chamber stages tree lightings in both Northfield and Winnetka, and what a turnout we had this past season! So many parents and kids came out to enjoy some cocoa and a visit with Santa. I’ve been a resident for 23 years now, and I’ve never seen our villages look more beautiful and festive for the holidays. Communities like Northfield and Winnetka are successful because of good governance, good schools, loyal and involved residents, quality merchants and services, and an active and strong Chamber of Commerce. I, for one, am very grateful to our Chamber staff and Board of Directors. For more information about the Chamber, please visit our website at www.WinnetkaNorthfieldChamber.com. Enjoy your Community Guide and keep it handy. It’s a great resource for our bountiful community. Sincerely, Rockey Flintermann, President Winnetka-Northfield Chamber of Commerce

CHARLES SCWHAB
WINNETKA
WHAT MAKES OUR HOMETOWN GREAT BY SUSAN NOYE S
For 150 years, Winnetka has been a small village with a big vision. Its history as a community with proactive, progressive, smart, highly engaged residents—who anticipate potential problems and plan for improvements—laid a firm foundation that still guides Winnetka’s development today. Innovative government, education, public works and conservation choices more than a century ago created a town that still serves residents well. Winnetka’s deep commitment to young families ensures that it will remain a vibrant village for decades to come. Village Manager Rob Bahan explains that based on the most recent village-wide survey and his experience: “Residents value that our town is safe, close to Chicago and has excellent schools, public services and quality shopping.” “They like the proximity to the lake too,” he adds with a grin. Village President Gene Greable and Trustee Carol Fessler provide historical perspective. As early as 1865, Winnetkans understood that urban sprawl would encroach on their pastoral community. These successful Chicago business leaders were proactive in anticipating the problems and opportunities this would bring, resulting in the adoption of what was then a visionary form of local government: the Council-Manager and a Caucus that slates candidates for the Village, School, Park and Library boards. Winnetka also was one of the first local towns ever to create a comprehensive development plan. This led to the construction of its still-impressive town hall, railroad tracks that are safer than most other suburbs, ownership of its own water and electricity plant, engineered lagoon system, influential Women’s Club, stillvibrant Community House and more. Leadership remains committed to thoughtful planning with an engaged citizenry. “We’re in a time of renewal,” Fessler explains. “With the community, we are developing a new Downtown Master Plan and Storm Water Management Alternatives Plan to be finalized this year.” The Park District also is working on multiple plans for the lakefront, bike paths and more. Quality local businesses within walking distance make Winnetka a delightful hometown, too. “We’re in the midst of economic revitalization,” Bahan proudly declares. “At least 35 new businesses have opened in the last two years, including Mrs. Green’s in Hubbard Woods. What other town can boast of three independent grocers?” 16 BEST OF 60093

Winnetka is nationally known for its progressive public school system. According to Fessler, in the early 20th Century, under the Women’s Club leadership, special education needs were addressed and legendary education innovator Carleton Washburne was hired as Superintendent. His philosophy — making schools as good as possible for each individual child to develop their full potential, well-being and ability to contribute to society at large — insured that administrators, teachers and community work together well, too. This philosophy endures. Furthermore, the schools feed into New Trier High School — long considered one of the best public high schools in the country. Greable enjoys reminding the public of other education options, too. “We have other excellent schools here, including parochial schools, North Shore Country Day and the Music Institute of Chicago,” he explains. Winnetka also offers opportunities for residents young and old to explore every type of interest — including art, theater, fitness, foreign language, even incubating new businesses in the Community House. “As happened when our family arrived in 2000,” Fessler says, “young families move here for the schools, find that neighbors drop by to sincerely welcome them, then invite them to their homes and neighborhood parties. Parents roll up their sleeves to help in schools and elsewhere in the community, eventually rising to become the next generation of community leaders.” Winnetka is great because of its history and culture of contributions by and for a smart, engaged citizenry. It offers opportunities for all. Village leaders honor governance techniques developed more than a century ago, maintain a deep commitment to young families and community development, thoughtfully plan for future improvements. Its future should look and feel just as successful as its past.
NORTHFIELD
WHAT MAKES OUR HOMETOWN GREAT BY SUSAN NOYE S
What makes the Village of Northfield great? The answer is a long list of outstanding attributes, including a community culture that promotes attention for every person who lives or works in it. The longevity and stability of village management, location, green space, public services and thriving local businesses are particular strong points. A responsive government — eager to hear from residents and accommodate their concerns, as well as promote local businesses to the broader region — is to be celebrated, too. A conversation with Stacy Sigman, village manager for over 19 years, and Trustee Jane Goldenberg confirms that careful attention is given to every resident and business in Northfield. That care is affectionately returned, too. “We’re like the bar in the television show ‘Cheers,’” Goldenberg laughs. “Everybody knows your name and your story.” “When I get sick, even for a day, residents send me get well cards,” Sigman declares with a grin. Northfield residents also enjoy the opportunity to easily connect and disconnect. They naturally connect with each other and with Chicago, because their small village, population 5420, is only 20 minutes from Chicago—thanks to its location along the Edens. They easily disconnect, too, because of large lot size and substantial green space. The village tries to support residents’ innovative property use too — including zoning that supports ownership of chickens and horses, canoeing, and front-yard lending libraries that look like customized birdhouses. Village services are outstanding and run smoothly. “I’m never prouder than when our staff is responding to a problem,” Sigman declares. Two excellent grade-school districts serve Northfield and feed into New Trier High School, widely considered the best public high school in the country. It is no wonder that surrounding communities keep asking to be annexed. This year Northfield pilots, with Waste Management, the easiest and most comprehensive recycling program ever. Everything will be picked up at residents’ homes, from batteries to electronics to compost. As a younger village with room to grow and a substantial commercial tax base, Northfield easily can maintain and improve upon its excellence. This includes promoting their
outstanding local businesses and restaurants regionally. Northfield has embarked on a thoughtful initiative to do just that tied to the launch of a new website this summer. Ongoing public infrastructure improvements make Northfield more walkable and bikeable, while it better connects public spaces throughout its footprint, too. Fortunately, Northfield knows how to limit the use of local tax dollars to pay for public infrastructure improvements. Officials made sure that the state bore the $5.5 million cost of storm water management improvements during the recent Willow Road expansion. Residents routinely volunteer time, talent and treasure for public improvements, too. Sigman explains, “We have highly educated local talent, and they want to help.” Impressive Park District headquarters, designed and built entirely with contributions by local residents, is an excellent example of this. Northfield’s leadership also actively listens for and responds to what residents want. “Listening for us is not just a show, we want them to tell us what they want!” Goldenberg says. A semi-annual survey is one of the tools used. But also, when a major initiative is being considered, special task forces form and one-on-one meetings with every home owner are encouraged. “Unlike elsewhere, we have no lack of civility in our government and public discourse,” Sigman delights. “No lack of engagement either.” Northfield is a great hometown because its people care about each other and their community. It enjoys outstanding services, location and an inclination to innovate and promote. A long list of good attributes make Northfield great. www.winnetkanorthfieldchamber.com

Northfield is the best of both worlds: a thriving, desirable suburb and a village with hometown charm. Incorporated in 1927, the village is located 20 miles from the heart of Chicago’s loop. With a population of approximately 5,600, Northfield attracts those looking for a small town way of life with a close proximity to a large city. When the village was incorporated, a commitment was made to protect open spaces. This commitment continues today as the village successfully balances that prized open space with commercial development. Northfield has more than 30 acres of open parkland that includes a bird sanctuary. The village is one of the few suburbs that issues licenses for boarding horses. The Village of Northfield is a warm family-orientated community with scenic

Minor kitchen remodels have the fifth-highest cost versus value ratio
HOME RENOVATIONS
THAT ADD THE MOST VALUE BY MEGHAN STREIT
If you’re planning to do work on your house with an eye toward selling, consider each project’s cost versus value ratio. Other high-yield improvements include replacing the bottom third of siding with stone veneer (93 percent return), garage door replacement (92 percent return) and steel entry door replacement (91 percent return). And, if you answered “kitchen remodel” to the question above, you were in the ballpark. Minor kitchen remodels have the fifth-highest cost versus value ratio (83 percent), according to the survey. In spite of what Remodeling magazine’s data shows, North Shore realtor Kati Spaniak, with Keller Williams, ranks kitchen and bathroom updates at the top of her list of valueadding projects. 24 BE ST OF 60 093
www.winnetkanorthfieldchamber.com
“But you don’t need to renovate them expensively,” she adds. “You can do it on a budget. A lot of times, just painting the cabinets, if they are good quality, is almost like remodeling the kitchen.” Spaniak cautions homeowners to be very strategic about how they spend money to update kitchens and bathrooms. To make sure your planned remodel has solid resale value, she recommends consulting with a trusted realtor. You’ll have a hard time recouping your renovation dollars if you don’t choose styles and colors (think grays and neutrals) that appeal to younger buyers. “If you spend $10,000 on new countertops for the kitchen and new tile for the bathrooms, the buyers may decide that it’s not the color or the style that they are looking for and will take the house off their list unless the price is drastically reduced,” Spaniak says. Spaniak does agree that a quick-hit project like a new front door is a smart choice to add resale value because it is relatively lowcost but makes a big first visual impression on buyers.

If you had to guess the home renovation projects that add the most value to a house, you’d probably say “kitchen remodel” or “new bathroom,” right? In all likelihood, “fiberglass attic insulation” wouldn’t be at the top of your list. But, as it turns out, that is the project with the greatest return on investment, according to Remodeling magazine’s 2016 Cost vs. Value Report. The estimated cost to install attic insulation is $1,268; meanwhile, that improvement adds an average of $1,482 to a home’s value, for a whopping 117 percent return.
Winnetka realtor Laura Fitzpatrick, with @properties, says that in her experience, many buyers are attracted to huge kitchen islands, mudrooms, second-floor laundry, and master bathrooms with double sinks and roomy showers. With regard to Remodeling magazine’s report, she says North Shore homeowners in particular should avoid cutting corners when remodeling. “Homeowners on the North Shore tend to choose higher-end finishes and demand higher-quality products; however it does generate a higher price on a sale,” Fitzpatrick says. “It’s easy to tell low quality versus high, and North Shore buyers are savvy, well-educated buyers who will see the value in a good-quality remodel.” If you’re doing work on your house in preparation to sell, Winnetka realtor Carrie Nadler Healy, with Jean Wright Real Estate, reminds homeowners to take care of eyesores that might distract potential buyers. “If one is making improvements for the purpose of selling, a good neutral coat of paint is always nice to freshen things up,” she says. “Replacing of old, worn carpeting helps to eliminate any red flags and lets the buyer concentrate on the more important improvements they will want to make.” Read more home and real estate tips online at MAKEITBETTER.NET/HOME
Choosing neutral styles and colors is a safe choice for resale potential

A FOODIE’S GUIDE TO WINNETKA/NORTHFIELD BY JULIE CHERNOFF
If you live on the North Shore, you’re surrounded by beautiful homes, lush parks, great schools and, of course, our magnificent Lake Michigan. But you might not realize that Winnetka and Northfield, in the heart of the North Shore, are a foodie destination in and of themselves, filled with fabulous restaurants and food purveyors that you really need to check out. Here are some (but not all!) of our favorites: AVLI ESTIATORIO
Simply the top Greek restaurant in the Midwest. Owner Louis Alexakis confounds tired tropes of Greek cuisine with fresh and exciting regional Greek specialties — like Corfu-Style Lobster Pasta or the Braised Pork Shoulder with Avgolemeno Sauce — and an all-Greek wine list. Save room for the Whipped Yogurt Mousse with fig syrup, a healthy dessert that feels indulgent. Laundry Mall, 566 Chestnut St., Winnetka, 847-446-9300, avli.us
GOOD GRAPES
Tired of wine snobs? Owner Theresa Lucas knows her wines, and shares that knowledge with you in a way that educates and informs rather than belittles. Grab a glass for now or a bottle for later! 821 Chestnut St., Winnetka, 847-242-9800, goodgrapes.com 44

HOFHERR MEAT CO.
Sean Hofherr follows in his German great-great-grandfather’s footsteps at this appealing butcher shop, where you’ll find restaurant-quality meat sourced from Midwestern familyrun farms. His inventive sausages and deli-counter offerings are highlights. 300 S. Happ Rd., Northfield, 847-441-MEAT, hofherrmeatco.com
MRS. GREEN’S NATURAL MARKET
I’m loving this eye-pleasing new food market in Hubbard Woods. You’ll find aisles filled to bursting with all manner of healthy, organic and local products, including an enormous variety of gluten-free options. Prepared dishes are a highlight, as is the store-made Cosmic Cookie. 925 Green Bay Road, Winnetka, 847-716-9064, mrsgreens.com/about/
Clockwise from top left: Stacked & Folded, Taco Nano, Mrs. Green’s, Avli
STACKED & FOLDED
Quickly becoming Make It Better’s go-to office lunch place. Chef/owner Josh Keating brings in non-GMO meats from Hofherr (see above) and preps everything fresh daily. Choose from Stacked (sandwiches) faves like the Bulgogi Cheese Steak or the Folded specialties (tacos) such as the Cajun Salmon with slaw, avocado and chipotle crema. Note: the Sweet Potato Fries are crazy delicious. 551 Lincoln Ave., Winnetka, 847-386-9100
TACO NANO
Chef Freddy Sanchez and his staff are churning out some of the best tacos in all of Chicagoland. Don’t miss the Turkey Picadillo and Sea of Cortez fish tacos, topped with some of their chunky guacamole. A taste sensation! 1743 Orchard Lane, Northfield, 847-386-7159, taconano.com
TASTE ON CHESTNUT
Already an Open Table “Diner’s Choice” winner, chef/owner Steve Levitan’s cozy resto is the neighborhood haunt of choice for many who love the expertly crafted cocktails, inventive cuisine and friendly vibe. The Crab Cake with corn and smoked bacon, seasonal Short Rib preparation, and the Pan-Roasted Salmon are must-orders. 505 Chestnut St., Winnetka, 847-441-0134, www.tasteonchestnut.com
THREE TARTS BAKERY
The combined talents of chef/owners Kate Rooney and Anne Heinz make this your go-to source for gorgeous special occasion cakes, decorated cookies, cupcakes, breads and made-to-order sandwiches. It’s an all-butter bakery, today and always. A perennial on the Make It Better Best Bakery list. 301 Happ Road, Winnetka, 847-446-5444, threetartsbakery.com Find the latest reviews and recipes online MAKEITBETTER.NET/ DINING www.winnetkanorthfieldchamber.com
