Thank you for your continued support in championing Kenya’s products and businesses.

Warm Regards,

LEVERAGING THE DIASPORA COMMUNITY TO INCREASE CONSUMPTION OF “MADE IN KENYA” PRODUCTS.

The Kenyan diaspora, a community of Kenyans living outside their homeland, has emerged as a powerful force in shaping the nation’s global image and facilitating the easy entry of “Made in Kenya” products. Their diverse experiences, cultural connections, and economic contributions have enhanced Kenya’s image and reputation.

In an increasingly globalized world, the Kenyan diaspora holds a unique and powerful position to influence international markets. With over three million Kenyans living abroad, their collective efforts can significantly boost the visibility and demand for “Made in Kenya” products. Kenya’s Sausages, beer, highly nutritious vegetables, jewellery, textiles, and leather products among others are some of the most popular products that always find their way to various markets through the diaspora community.

However, there is room for more manufactured products to hit the markets through the influence of this diaspora community. To drive consistent market entry for Kenya’s products, the diaspora should optimise Social media as a potent tool for marketing and advocacy. Kenyans in the diaspora can use popular platforms like Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn to showcase Kenyan products by sharing personal stories, reviews, and experiences with these products. This creates a buzz and generates more interest among their followers’ friends and acquaintances in their host countries. Hashtags like #MadeInKenya and #BuyKenyanBuildKenya can help in creating a unified movement online. Some of the notable Kenyans in the diaspora leveraging on their platforms to position Kenya’s products are David Kuria, Julie Gichuru, Eddie Ndichu, Wanjira Mathai, and

Patricia Kihoro among others continue to push various innovations and products through their social media and business networks.

International e-commerce sites offer a valuable opportunity for Kenyan products to reach a wider audience, build brand recognition, and compete on a global scale. By leveraging these platforms, Kenyan SMEs can drive economic growth, create jobs, and promote sustainable and ethical business practices. There are various ecommerce platforms that play host to numerous Made in Kenya Products. These platforms include; Amazon, Shopify, Ebay, Etsy, Zalando among others. The diaspora can support by creating awareness on the availability of our products in these platforms. They can also leave positive reviews and testimonials on these e-commerce sites, creating authentic reviews which significantly boost the credibility and attractiveness of the products. User-Generated Content such as photos and videos of customers using the products is also another way of building a sense of community and trust.

Building strong partnerships with local businesses in Kenya is crucial. Diaspora members can act as intermediaries, helping local businesses understand and meet international standards and preferences.

The Kenya Exports Promotion and Branding Agency has established an eportal (https://www. makeitkenya.go.ke/buyer-seller/sellers) which provides linkages between Kenyan exporters with international buyers. The platform creates awareness and motivates buyers, sellers, and general consumers to choose Kenyan products. The portal facilitates e-commerce and matchmaking helping promote “Made in Kenya” products globally.

Kenya is renowned for its rich culture and heritage. Cultural events and trade fairs are excellent opportunities to showcase Kenyan products. Diaspora communities can organize or participate in such events to promote Kenyan culture and products. These events can include food festivals, fashion shows, and art exhibitions, providing a platform for local artisans and businesses to display their goods. Over the years, various Kenyan Embassies and consular offices around the world have partnered with key Public and private sector agencies to organize such events in various countries and have created a ripple effect in allowing more of our products access these markets. Majorly the events are curated to allow attendees sample various products and a firsthand experience of authentic and high-quality Kenyan products.

Building strong partnerships with local businesses in Kenya is crucial. Diaspora members can act as intermediaries, helping local businesses understand and meet international standards and preferences. This collaboration can also involve providing financial support, mentorship, and market insights to help local businesses thrive and understand consumer preferences in these markets.

Finally, consumers worldwide are increasingly concerned about the ethical and environmental impact of their purchases. By promoting Kenyan products that are ethically produced and environmentally sustainable, the diaspora can support small businesses to tap into this growing market segment. Several Kenyan companies and brands have identified this growing trend and have adopted ethical practices and made significant strides. By highlighting impact stories of fair trade, eco-friendly practices, and community development, the Kenyan products are positioned more attractively to conscious consumers. The Kazuri beads brand is an example of an eco-friendly and sustainable sourcing company. They source their major raw material clay, from Mt. Kenya and employ local women to handcraft ceramic beads and pottery. The company employs over 300 women, mostly single mothers, providing them with fair wages, skills training, sustainable employment opportunities and a supportive work environment. Sandstorm Kenya is another global brand from Kenya that produces high-quality bags and accessories using locally sourced materials. They emphasize fair labour practices and environmental sustainability in their production processes, creating a loyal customer base worldwide, thanks to their commitment to ethical practices

The Kenyan diaspora has the potential to be a powerful force in promoting “Made in Kenya” products. By leveraging their unique position and resources, they can help local businesses reach new heights and contribute to the economic development of Kenya. Through social media advocacy, e-commerce, cultural events, business collaborations, and promotion of ethical practices, the diaspora can play a pivotal role in improving incomes for local entrepreneurs and growing our export potential in the global marketplace.

INTEGRATING SUSTAINABILITY INTO KENYAN BUSINESSES

As the world shifts toward more sustainable and ethical consumption, there is growing excitement among consumers both locally and globally about buying sustainably produced products made in Kenya. International buyers are not only looking for high-quality goods but also for those that align with values of sustainability.

Sustainably produced products from Kenya reflect the country’s natural beauty, cultural richness, and commitment to responsible production. This makes them highly desirable in the global marketplace. Kenya’s tea and coffee, for example, are recognized globally not just for their quality but also for being produced in ways that protect the environment, promote fair wages, and support local communities.

From fashion and beauty to food, accessories, and crafts, Kenya’s sustainably produced products are gaining traction with consumers who want to make a positive impact on the planet while supporting local economies. Awareness is growing around how purchasing ecofriendly products helps reduce waste, conserve resources, and mitigate the effects of climate change. This knowledge drives enthusiasm for products with a smaller environmental footprint and greater social impact.

Made in Kenya adoptees promoting sustainability

The Kenya Export Promotion and Branding Agency’s Made in Kenya initiative is at the forefront of promoting sustainable and conscious production practices. Notable examples include Green Pencils and Momo Pencils, two Kenyan companies that craft eco-friendly pencils from recycled newspapers. This approach emphasizes both environmental sustainability and job creation.

Another adoptee is BURN Manufacturing, who designs and manufactures the world’s most efficient clean cookstoves, including electric, biomass, and LPG stoves. BURN’s products are not only helping households across Africa cook more efficiently but also significantly reduce carbon emissions and health risks associated with traditional cooking methods.

These companies reflect a broader shift toward responsible consumption and production. They are enhancing Kenya’s reputation as a hub for eco-friendly and ethical products while setting an example for other businesses worldwide. Embracing sustainability has allowed local manufacturers to innovate, with some receiving international recognition for their efforts.

The importance of integrating sustainability

Integrating sustainability into Kenyan businesses is more than just a strategic move for long-term success—it’s a critical step in ensuring environmental preservation, social welfare, and economic resilience. As Kenya faces challenges like climate change, resource scarcity, and economic inequality, sustainable practices offer a pathway

for businesses to thrive while positively impacting society and the environment.

Sustainability has become a key consideration for businesses globally, and Kenyan companies are following suit. The Made in Kenya mark provides businesses an opportunity to align with sustainable practices and bolster their brand reputations locally and internationally.

Driving factors for sustainability in Kenya

Global buyers, particularly in the European Union (EU), are increasingly demanding transparency around sourcing and production methods. Kenyan exporters are finding it necessary to adopt sustainable practices to remain competitive and meet environmental, social, and governance (ESG) standards.

Resource scarcity, unpredictable weather patterns, and increasing energy costs are driving businesses to adopt more efficient and sustainable practices. The Kenyan government’s promotion of a green economy also supports this shift.

“ Kenya’s manufacturing sectoris transitioningfrom resource-intensive greenerprocessestosolutions

Sustainable agriculture

Agriculture, which supports over 75% of Kenya’s population, is at the forefront of sustainability efforts. Sectors like tea, coffee, and horticulture are adopting climate-smart agricultural techniques such as agroforestry, organic farming, and watersaving irrigation systems. These practices protect biodiversity and contribute to food security and economic resilience.

Sustainability is a core value at Tropical Mac EPZ Limited, another Made in Kenya adoptee. The company is committed to environmentally responsible practices, including water conservation, energy efficiency, and waste reduction. The macadamia nuts growers follow sustainable agricultural practices, ensuring the long-term viability of the macadamia nut industry and the preservation of the natural ecosystem.

Green manufacturing

Kenya’s manufacturing sector is transitioning from resourceintensive processes to greener solutions. Businesses are adopting clean production technologies, using renewable energy sources like solar and geothermal, and reducing waste. The ban on plastic bags in 2017 in Kenya has also driven the use of biodegradable and recyclable packaging materials.

Made in Kenya adoptee Chandaria Industries is one of the largest recyclers of paper waste for tissue manufacturing, making it one of the most environmentally friendly and sustainable businesses not only in Kenya but the region as well. Through its state-ofthe-art recycling and waste management systems, processes and technology have made it a global case study with leading international education institutions and an outstanding example of corporate sustainability for other corporates worldwide.

Social responsibility and governance

Beyond environmental concerns, Kenyan businesses are increasingly focusing on social responsibility, particularly in areas such as labor rights, diversity, and community engagement. Export sectors like flowers and textiles are under greater scrutiny to ensure fair wages, safe working conditions, and gender equality. Businesses that prioritize strong social governance benefit from enhanced reputations and increased consumer loyalty, especially in international markets.

Some companies are going further by supporting local communities through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs. These initiatives range from education and healthcare projects to conservation efforts that align business goals with societal needs.

Overcoming challenges

Despite the momentum, challenges remain. High initial costs for green technologies, limited access to financing, and lack of awareness among some business owners are significant hurdles. However, experts argue that the long-term benefits far outweigh the costs. Sustainable businesses gain a competitive edge in global markets and reduce risks associated with resource scarcity and environmental degradation. Collaboration between the private sector, government, and international partners will be crucial in overcoming these barriers. By continuing to

invest in sustainable practices, Kenyan businesses can lead the way in green growth, ensuring both economic prosperity and environmental stewardship.

Telling your sustainability story

Effectively communicating your sustainability journey is essential for building trust with customers, stakeholders, and the public. Sharing your commitment to sustainability not only enhances your brand’s reputation but also engages your audience. Consumers want to support businesses that are transparent about their sustainability efforts and are contributing to a greener future.

Supporting a greener future

For many consumers, the excitement of buying sustainably produced, eco-friendly, Made in Kenya products goes beyond the products themselves. It is about participating in a movement toward a greener, more sustainable future. By supporting businesses that prioritize sustainability, consumers are not only helping to reduce environmental harm but also contributing to Kenya’s economic growth and the well-being of local communities.

Laki Laki

A Taste of Dutch Delight with a Heart for Kenya

In the competitive world of gourmet dairy, Laki Laki stands out not only for its exceptional products but also for its unwavering commitment to community upliftment. In this edition of the Made in Kenya Newsletter, we are excited to introduce you to this unique brand that seamlessly blends a passion for fine dairy with a mission to create positive change in Kenya.

A Dutch Dream with a Kenyan Heart

Founded in 2012 by Dutch dairy enthusiast Joost Timpers, Laki Laki was born from an ambitious and altruistic vision. The name “Laki Laki” was carefully chosen to ensure that the brand would leave a lasting impression, while also making a meaningful contribution to local communities. At the heart of Laki Laki’s philosophy lies Joost’s love for dairy and his dedication to giving back to Kenya.

Crafting Excellence with Every Drop

At Laki Laki, quality is not just a commitment—it’s a tradition. Their Greek yogurt, for instance, is made using artisanal methods that draw on ancient Greek and Middle Eastern techniques. By hanging natural yogurt in cheesecloth for four hours, they create a rich, creamy product without the need for additives

like milk powder or starch. The result is a yogurt that is pure, wholesome, and absolutely delicious, a testament to Laki Laki’s dedication to natural ingredients and unparalleled taste.

Beyond Greek yogurt, Laki Laki also offers Labneh, a smooth and light salted cheese with origins in Lebanon. Made by straining Greek yogurt for 48 hours, Labneh’s versatility makes it a favorite among chefs and food lovers alike. Whether enjoyed with flatbreads or incorporated into various dishes, its smooth texture and rich flavor are unmistakable.

Meet the Stars Behind the Scenes

Laki Laki’s success wouldn’t be possible without the dedicated team behind the brand. Samson, the farm manager at Risa Farm in Red Hill, Limuru, along with Kwanza, a prized Holstein Friesian cow, and 80 other cows, produces between 600 and 900 liters of high-quality milk daily. This milk undergoes stringent testing to ensure it meets the highest standards of purity before being transformed into Laki Laki’s renowned dairy products.

At the Molito factory, production manager Milka—whose name fittingly reflects her expertise—oversees the entire process, ensuring that every batch of yogurt upholds the brand’s high standards of quality and hygiene. Her commitment to excellence is reflected in every thick, creamy spoonful of Laki Laki yogurt.

A Brand with a Heart

Beyond its top-tier products, Laki Laki is deeply invested in giving back to Kenyan communities through its partnership with the African Friends Foundation. Proceeds from Laki Laki sales help fund the Ruiru Children Care Centre (RCCC), an orphanage that provides shelter, food, and education to 60 children. The foundation’s recent efforts include building a new, improved home for these children, a project made possible by the generous support of donors.

Building a Brighter Future

In 2019, Laki Laki launched an ambitious project to construct a new, better-equipped facility for the children at RCCC. Though still a work in progress, the new home will offer a more comfortable, supportive environment for these young lives. This initiative is a reflection of Laki Laki’s larger mission of creating lasting, positive change in the communities it touches.

Join the Journey

Laki Laki is more than just a dairy brand—it’s a symbol of quality, sustainability, and community care. By choosing Laki Laki, you’re not only enjoying some of the finest dairy products but also supporting a brand that is making a difference.

HOW THE MADE IN KENYA INITIATIVE IS EMPOWERING LOCAL ENTREPRENEURS.

The

Made in Kenya initiative has significantly empowered local entrepreneurs by providing them with the necessary support, exposure, and market access to thrive.

“ “

he Made in Kenya Initiative is a strategic program being implemented by the Kenyan government to promote the consumption of locally produced goods and support local industries. This initiative has had a profound impact on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Kenya, fostering economic growth, creating employment opportunities, and reducing reliance on imported products. Here, we examine the positive effects of this initiative on SMEs.

Economic Growth and Job Creation

The Made in Kenya initiative serves as a catalyst for economic growth and job creation within Kenyan industries. By promoting the consumption of locally made goods, the initiative creates a thriving market for Kenyan products. This, in turn, stimulates local production, leading to increased economic activity and job opportunities. The initiative aligns with Kenya Kwanza’s agenda for a self-reliant, prosperous, and sustainable economy.

Addressing Market Gaps

The initiative addresses several key gaps that have historically hindered the growth of local enterprises:

1. Consumer Awareness Gap: By raising awareness about the benefits of consuming locally produced goods, the initiative encourages more Kenyans to support local businesses.

2. Perception Gap: Efforts to improve the perception of Kenyan products as high-quality and reliable have helped boost consumer confidence.

3. Market Access Gap: The initiative facilitates better market access for local products, both domestically and internationally.

4. Branding and Differentiation Gap: By promoting the Made in Kenya brand, the initiative helps local products stand out in a competitive market.

International Exposure and Opportunities

Many businesses have engaged in several successful international collaborations, which have significantly contributed to their growth and global presence. Some of the notable events are:

This collaboration highlighted the potential of Kenyan products in the African market and facilitated new business opportunities.
