This issue, our Star Letter will receive the gift of blooms again and again (and again!) with 3 months of flowers from Bloom & Wild, the UK’s top-rated flower delivery service! bloomandwild.com

Star letter I first learned to crochet as a child when my grandmother taught me both how to do that and knit. I didn’t keep up with either for many years but then I decided a few years ago to knit daffodils in order to raise money for Marie Curie. It was so successful that I then took on the challenge of knitting poppies for the British Legion and again this was very well received. The following year I changed things up a little and designed my own poppy with felt and buttons. I then carried on with my charity crafting by making jumpers, hats and blanket squares for babies in

Share The Love I set up a craft club in our small village in south-west Scotland as I wanted to share my passion for crafting. One of the first events we held was a ‘Learn To Crochet’ night. I had never tried this before and I loved it! When I started to experiment, I found that I loved using the recycled t-shirt yarn. First I made a few items for myself and started wearing them. Then people started commenting and I thought why not make this into a business? Sarah Redman, via Facebook 18

Africa as well as tiny little hats for Innocent’s Big Knit! After this, I was hooked on crochet! Naturally, I decided first to make a throw from granny squares. Buying a book to learn a few new stitches was the next step and that’s how I came to make my flower wreath, as it was completely different to anything I have done before. I’ve also crocheted lots of bunting and designed and hooked two bags and a mobile phone cover! Catherine Alysia, via Facebook

Hannah Read-Baldrey gives us a peek into her crafty life and shares all the things she’s loving right now

H

ello and such a warm welcome, I’m delighted to be hosting this very gorgeous column for Crochet Club! Every month I’ll be sharing what I’m up to and all the things I love – highlighting my favourite crochet designers, fashion and home. For those of you who don’t know me, I’m a stylist for magazines, bestselling craft author and ‘how to & style’ presenter. At the beginning of the month, you may have caught me styling a Christmas craft spread in Good Housekeeping. We got to shoot at the most gorgeous Edwardian dream house, near me in South-East London, which is called the White House as every room inside is painted that colour. I created a range of handmade Christmas projects including wreaths, stockings and much more, all using Hobbycraft products. It was wonderful working with watch brand Olivia Burton, creating a bespoke papercraft cutting bow for their Covent Garden store launch. The brand, like me, is obsessed with everything floral so it seemed only fitting to create an elegant pastel coloured design teeming with flowers. They loved it so much, it didn’t get cut! I’ve also been presenting my latest series of videos for Hobbycraft looking at faux foliage, soap making and fluid pouring. I adore presenting – years ago I used to host a comedy night in London which I loved until I tried to go solo! I totally froze in front of about 100 people… so presenting is much easier as you get to stop and start! I create my videos from home unless I’m working for a studio, which is actually really great as I have

GETTING CREATIV FOR CHRISTMAS E 20

everything I need on hand. My videographer comes over to an unusually tidy house (especially as I have a four-year-old) and we shoot and gossip and eat and shoot. Perfect! So, as we move into the New Year there is always the opportunity to create some sort of new beginning. Last year for me came with its own set of rules so I’m hoping for a far more even keel this year. Although the unexpected may always happen, it’s a positive start to the year to think of goals and achievements, big or small. This year I’m all about self-care and wellbeing and I believe creativity can really help with this. Did you know there are proven studies that show knitting, crochet and craft in general are a fantastic way to relax the brain? Apparently, the repetitive nature creates a meditative state. So why not take up a new skill or expand the skill level you have? Taking classes or workshops is a great way to do this as there is also a huge benefit to socialising with other like-minded people. Living in London there are lots of amazing creative workshop venues at my fingertips. Plus, there is a great website called obby.co.uk that has comprehensive listings! If you live in a smaller town or village, you could contact the local council to see if they have a list of locations or check out craftcourses.com. If you are a total crochet addict you’re probably there already! As a creative person, I also think it’s important to be out in the world gaining inspiration so every month I’ll create a list of what inspires me. Whatever your New Year’s resolutions, make at least one creative!
