NYC’s free daylong 5 borough outdoor music holiday

Make Music New York is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature. This program is supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council and by a grant from the NYC & Company Foundation.

Make Music New York returns for its 12th Season! Join us on Thursday, June 21st, from dawn through dusk, to ring in the first day of summer on the longest day of the year with NYC’s one of a kind celebration of music.

Our 12th annual “music holiday” will bring our shared, outdoor spaces to vibrant life with free, outdoor performances in public plazas, parks and community gardens; on sidewalks fronting restaurants, bars, shops and businesses; in front of New York Public Library and Brooklyn Public Library branches; in partnerships with community centers and cultural organizations; and even across entire streets. In keeping with our mission, this year’s festival highlights the talents and passions of local New Yorkers of all ages, backgrounds and skill levels, from professionals to first-time performers. And of course, the music being performed is as diverse as the city itself, from French chansons to klezmer and Caribbean-flavored hip-hop to “blues rock theremin.” Make Music New York is NYC’s festival by the people and for the people, and we could not thrive in our mission without your participation and support. We extend our heartfelt thanks to the thousands of performing artists that have volunteered their time to provide free concerts to their fellow New Yorkers. And we greatly appreciate the hundreds of host venues that have welcomed the concerts into their communities. It is only through your involvement that Make Music New York has grown to become NYC’s largest free, one-day music festival and we do not take your contributions for granted! As is customary, this season includes a handful of returning and new special projects, which

are highlighted throughout the guide. Back by popular demand is “The Well-Tempered Clavier at the 9/11 Memorial plaza,” showcasing professional and student pianists performing preludes from J.S. Bach’s masterpiece. Improv Everywhere is back with a new participatory audio adventure, “The Mp3 Experiment Number Fifteen,” taking place at Brooklyn Bridge Park. And “Joe’s Pub Block Party” will again give voice to the very best in world music from Astor Place Plaza in the heart of the Village. Two special projects have grown so large that they will be held over the weekend following the holiday. On the special date of Saturday, June 23rd, the “11th Annual Punk Island” returns to Randall’s Island to bring the vitality, diversity and intensity of the NYC punk scene into the light of day with over 80 bands performing from five micro-curated stages along the shore of the East River. And further down the river, on Sunday, June 24th, “Porch Stomp!” returns to Governors Island to celebrate its fifth consecutive year as NYC’s premiere folk festival, with over one hundred concerts, jams and workshops featuring bluegrass, old-time, blues, roots and Americana music. Dynamic new programs include “Swamped,” in which esteemed guitarist and composer Elliott Sharp will lead a flotilla of canoes down the Gowanus Canal playing a 90-minute solo guitar concert amplified by waterproof speakers. “Harlem to Broadway” celebrates music from the “Great White Way” at the Richard Rodgers Amphitheater in Marcus Garvey Park. The world premiere of Pete M. Wyer’s “Twilight Chorus (for Humans),” a vocal work inspired by birdsong, comes to the Brooklyn

Joe’s Pub Block Party

Manhattan

MIDTOWN EAST

at Astor Place Plaza from 1-7pm

MIDTOWN WEST/HELL’S KITCHEN

In the spirit of inclusiveness, this summer’s Joe’s Pub Block Party remains dedicated to voices from within the NYC immigrant and international population, featuring six world cultures that contribute to our city’s vibrancy.

Anita’s Way 135 W 42nd St 11:00 AM-12:00 PM Roquois RnB + pop 12:00-1:00 PM Emily McNally acoustic folk-pop 1:15-2:00 PM O’Duo acoustic americana duo 2:15-3:15 PM Jonny KT soul singer/songwriter 3:30-4:30 PM Kosi jazz singer/songwriter 4:45-5:45 PM Jeff Baker Sounds acoustic + electronic fusion 6:00-7:00 PM Dusty Wright americana + folk

1pm Martha Redbone Redbone’s music flows equally from her own unique, award-winning blend of Native American elements with funk and her deep roots in Appalachian folk and Piedmont blues favored by the matriarchy that raised her on a rich sojourn from Clinch Mountain, Virginia to Harlan County, Kentucky and beyond to Brooklyn’s Dodge City-esque mean streets. Her latest, Garden Of Love, seamlessly evokes the mid-20th century old timey gold rush. 2pm Treya Lam Treya Lam is a classically trained singer, multi-instrumentalist and songwriter whose cinematic songs and ethereal vocals are built on Nina Simone-inspired piano, meditative guitar and lush chamber arrangements. Treya’s debut album, Good News, was just released on June 8 via Kaki King’s label, Short Stuff Records. Produced by Kaki, mastered by Sarah Register and featuring an array of talented female musicians, the album is an instant classic, full of the kind of songwriting and raw talent that has never gone out of style, as well as a message of love and longing. 3pm Migguel Anggelo Migguel Anggelo is a Venezuelan-born, Brooklyn-based singer/songwriter, dancer and actor who is breaking barriers on the American stage, creating unique works that are reflective of the multicultural, multilingual, changing demographics of our country and times. He “exhilaratingly recalls the showmanship of Desi Arnaz and the performance art of Klaus Nomi,” says Theater Scene while Stage Buddy professes, “He has an indescribable, hypnotic power over the audience.”

4pm Yemen Blues Duo featuring Ravid Kahalani & Omer Avital Conceived from vocalist Ravid Kahalani’s vision, Yemen Blues’s original music mixes Yemen and West Africa influences with contemporary grooves from funk to mambo and the deep soul of old chants. Conjuring up a rich and diverse aural palette with the use of percussion, oud, horns and strings, Yemen Blues coexists in both the past and present, at once timeless and modern. He joined forces with internationally renowned bass player and composer Omer Avital, and together they created a music vision that attracted media and promoters with their intense showcases. 5pm Mohsen Namjoo Mohsen Namjoo is an Iranian singer/ songwriter, music scholar and setar (traditional Persian lute) player based in NYC. Hailed as “the Bob Dylan of Iran” by the New York Times, Namjoo is a visionary artist who speaks for the youth in Iran. Seamlessly blending the Classical Persian setar with electric guitar, and rock and blues vocal techniques with Persian avaz (singing), he fuses the ancient with the current. His ensemble consists of Iranian percussion and drum set player, Yahya; Anders Nilsson, a Swedish New York-based guitarist, composer, improviser and teacher; and bassist and composer Sean Conly. 6pm M.A.K.U. Soundsystem M.A.K.U., based in NYC, have played in many cities and countries sharing their immigrant beat, a unique sound that encompasses their immigrant experience. On stage, M.A.K.U juxtaposes traditional Colombian percussion, drum-set, electric bass, guitar and vocals to create an explosive performance filled with unshakable grooves. The band WILL release their new EP, 5 Fuegos, this summer.

The Well-Tempered Clavier

Back for its second season! In 1742, composer J.S. Bach completed the second volume of the Well-Tempered Clavier (known as “the WTC”), a compendium of forty-eight preludes and fugues in every major and minor key. The music is beautiful, and runs the gamut of Baroque styles, from lively to stately French overtures to thick counterpoint. To celebrate the 12th annual music holiday, grand pianos will be placed around the 9/11 Memorial plaza to allow for three continuous hours of performances by a rotating cast of dozens of pianists of all skill levels.

Make Music New York is NYC’s music festival by the people and for the people! The Make Music New York team is busy putting the finishing touches on the 2018 edition of our annual music holiday and we need your help to get us over the finish line! The day-long summer solstice celebration is inclusive, ambitious, unpredictable and fun–and we hope that you take pride in our collective achievements. As always, the festival is presented at no cost to our thousands of participating musicians and tens of thousands of spectators. But although the festival is free to the public, it is not free to produce. There are many “backstage” expenses that must be paid, from the software and social media tools that allow us to reach and connect thousands of performers with exciting outdoor venues, to the street and sound permits and insurance coverage that allow us to safely transform public spaces across all five boroughs into stages for local musicians. We are happy to be the roadies so that you can focus on performing or enjoying the 1,000+ offerings that we bring to life. All we ask is that you consider what Make Music New York does for music makers, music fans and our city at large and make a donation today. And because Make Music New York is a notfor-profit 501(c)3 organization, your donation is tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law.
