A GLIMPSE OF OUR PAST
In a small town called Clifton, in Northern Louisiana, our beloved fore-father, by the name of Julius Conerly was born to the parents of Tom and Liza Manning Conerly. His life on the dairy farm required long hours of work. One day he met a young woman by the name of Mary James; Mary was the daughter of Monroe and Dank James. After a short period of courtship, Julius asked for her hand in marriage and she agreed. Julius was also known by everyone as “Hop”. He obtained the name from an accident that occurred while working on the railroad track. One day while he was working on a pup-wood truck, one of the logs rolled off and broke his leg, leaving him with a permanent hop. …and the rest is history. Mary, his wife of many years was nicknamed “Modie” by her family and friends. She was a woman of strength and character and worked alongside of her husband while living on the farm. Farm life wasn’t easy, and when the work slowed down on the dairy farm; and things did not improve, they packed up and moved to the Delta in Mississippi to pick cotton; where money was good for bundles of cotton. They remained in that area of Mississippi and worked the fields to provide for the family. Continue, pg. 1
