Ways to Celebrate Galentine's Day

Super Bowl Sunday: a game that unites

Letter from the editor

If you're like me, there’s a good chance you’re wearing green as you read this. This Sunday, millions of us will gather—at bars, in living rooms, at parties—bonded by the shared excitement of the biggest game of the year. Whether you’re a die-hard eagles fan (like me), a casual viewer or just in it for the halftime show and commercials, the Super bowl is one of those rare events that brings people together.

More than a game

In a time when the world feels increasingly divided and tempers flare too easily, sports remain one of the few things that unite us. The Super bowl, in particular, transcends politics, personal differences and daily struggles. It’s a shared experience we all tune in for, a night where we set aside our worries, clink our glasses

and cheer as one.

e arlier this week, as I walked through boscov’s wearing my favorite eagles hoodie, at least five strangers gave me smiles, high-fives and a “ yeah, Go eagles!” They were brief interactions, but a powerful reminder of how the Super b owl can create instant connections.

No one cared about my opinions on current events. For those brief

moments, we were simply fans, united by our love for the game and the team that represents our grit and heart. Super bowl Sunday, it’s like that all day. The only debates will be over whether to order spicy or mild wings There’s no stress beyond the tension of a close fourth-quarter battle. Strangers will become friends over a shared love for the team, exchanging high-fives with people they might

otherwise never talk to. and that’s the beauty of it.

A moment to celebrate

Super b owl Sunday reminds us that joy can still be collective. In a world where so much is filtered through screens and divided by opinions, this is a moment we experience together. For one night, the world slows down. The focus isn’t on our differences but on the shared excitement of the game, the sea of green and the energy that pulses through every eagles fan.

Let’s embrace the Super bowl and enjoy the camaraderie that comes with it. Let’s celebrate our team, and the spirit that makes us proud to be eagles fans. This issue of Shore Local has something for every fan out there — top spots to watch the big game, creative ways to show your team spirit and a look at this year’s most anticipated commercials. Go eagles!

Cape May County set to shine again as Spielberg filming kicks off

Cape May County is no stranger to the spotlight, with another significant film production slated to take place in the area.

Following the success of the Oscar-nominated film "a Complete u nknown" in 2024, which featured Cape May as a stand-in for Newport, r .I., the county is getting a second shot at the big screen.

This time, the legendary filmmaker Steven Spielberg is bringing his sci-fi magic to the area with his latest project.

The movie is currently untitled but is being called "Non-View" for production purposes. It reportedly has the working title "The Dish."

Scheduled for release on May 15, 2026, "The Dish" marks Spielberg's return to the genre that helped define his career.

This film, reportedly about u FOs, boasts a star-studded cast that includes emily blunt, Colin Firth, Josh O'Connor and Colman Domingo.

Cape

May County

is a rising star in the film industry

Cape May County's recent emergence as a hotspot for filming has sparked interest from both residents and industry professionals. The Cape May County Tourism Department has been working to promote the region as an attractive destination for movie productions, and their efforts are paying off.

a s part of New Jersey's "Film ready" initiative, the county is actively involved in efforts to make the area more accessible to filmmakers and boost its presence in the film and TV industries.

In 2023, the state saw nearly $590 million in film and television spending. While last year’s exact spending number is not yet available, projec-

tions for 2024 expected an increase to $600 million, according to the New Jersey Motion Picture and Television Commission.

a s with any major production, locals are eager to be a part of the magic. The first round of casting for "The Dish" has already begun, with an open call for extras. The casting agency handling the extras is Grant Wilfley Casting, the same team behind the extras for "a Complete unknown."

"Grant Wilfley, one of our longtime colleagues who's doing the casting for this, is wonderful, making sure that local actors are used and that the film stays within budget, with having to spend a certain amount of their budget in our state to qualify, which is the balancing act always for the casting directors," said r yan-Manhim.

Grant Wilfley is looking for individuals to play train passengers or car drivers in scenes shot in Woodbine between Monday, March 10 and Friday, March 14.

No prior acting experience is required for those wishing to be extras.

Participants will be compensated with a base pay of $216 for eight hours of work and a car allowance of $37.50.

"It's open to everyone, every size, every look, every ethnicity, every disability, true to life, really, in film. It's great because there are no exclusions. Just like when you walk down the street, you see people of every walk," said r yan-Manhim.

Those interested in joining the film can find more information at gwcionlocation.com/new-jersey or send an email to nj@gwcnyc.com.

In the email, write “Non-View Cape May Locals” as the subject and include your name, pronouns, phone number, whether or not you are a SaG-aFTra member, what dates you are available during the filming window, whether or not you have visible tattoos, and whether or not you are local to Cape May.

also include current non-professional photos of yourself, both closeup and full-body. If you own a car that you can use in the film, also send the color, year, make and model, and a photo of the car.

‘Dry January’ means bad news for N.J.’s drought

Dry January, the annual ritual in which people refrain from drinking alcohol to kick off the new year, extended to Mother Nature as well. However, in her case, the dry January wasn’t about a lack of alcohol, but a lack of precipitation, significantly lowering the chances that we will end the drought by the time spring comes.

Dry on the coast

The Coastal region of New Jersey, roughly anywhere from the Garden State Parkway on east, including most of Cape May County, had the third or fourth driest January on record, according to the Office of the New Jersey State Climatologist. r ecords going back to 1895 show it was among the driest 2-3% of Januarys on record, according to

Dave robinson, the New Jersey state climatologist.

Snow not enough

Don’t be fooled by the snow cover on the ground, the cold weather and lack of watering you did in January. This is bad news for New Jersey. every week, January saw either an improvement or no change in its drought status, which is updated by the u nited States Drought Monitor on Thursdays using data through that Tuesday. That is, on Jan. 30, 15% of the state worsened from a “moderate” drought – a level one of four for drought – to a “severe” drought, a level two. The South Jersey shore remained in the driest condition, located in an “extreme” drought at level three of four. More than a third of the state, 34%, is in this classification, which includes all of Cape May and atlantic counties, as well as most of Cumberland, b urlington and Ocean counties. Our region has remained in this extreme drought from Nov. 12 through the Jan. 30 update. While our Feb. 5 status is not known at the time of this writing, there’s no reason to believe our drought status will be better by then. We need around 0.75 inches of rain a

week just to stay steady, and more to improve our status. We’re not expected to go much above 0.75 inches by the Thursday update.

I’ve been saying since our winter forecast was released on Nov. 27 that we won’t have enough precipitation to cure drought by the time the winter season is over. Sadly, that’s proving true.

Spring is coming

We have about six more weeks to improve drought fairly easily. Water usage is at an annual minimum and the sun isn’t evaporating much moisture from the ground. but six weeks from now it will be late March. Water usage will increase

HELLO 2025!

Remember the problems you had with your air conditioner last summer? Lets get working on them. Memorial Day is only 4 months away!

as agriculture begins and sprinkler systems come back online. The sun will be stronger and pull moisture out of the ground through evaporation. b y this point, we’ll need about an inch of precipitation a week just to keep our drought status steady, and probably 1.5 inches a week to improve drought. That’s a tall order.

The Climate Prediction Center forecasts equal chances of precipitation being either below average, near average or above average for February from their mid-January update. Those equal chances extend to their three-month outlook, which covers February through april. Sure, it’s possible we wind up on the wet side, but don’t place your bets on it. even average precipitation during this time will bring harm to the state, let alone below average.

Forest fire danger

Prescribed burning will be a challenge to meet the New Jersey Forest Fire Service’s mission to protect “life, property as well as the state’s natural resources from wildfire.” Prescribed burning reduces the risk of future wildfires by skillfully applying fire to reduce the underbrush, which is fire fuel. Typically, this begins in late February and continues through spring.

Most of the Pine barrens range from a level five to a level nine out of 10 when it comes to burn probability, as of Jan. 31. I expect that to worsen in the next few weeks. If conditions are too dry, it’s hard to conduct prescribed burning, and even skillfully applied fires can spread rapidly. reduced prescribed burning just means a greater likelihood the inevitable wildfires that do occur this year will be bigger and spread faster.

Dry streams and wells

Many of us have well water once you go offshore. With groundwater conditions running “extremely dry,” according to the New Jersey Department of environmental Protection

(NJD eP), expect this to mean either your well will need to be dug deeper, or risk going dry completely and relying on outside sources of water. Streamflows have also been suffering under the extremely dry conditions for the past 14 weeks, the NJD eP says. That will impact the amount of oxygen fish and other freshwater marine wildfire can consume. e xpect impacts there.

Water restrictions

This one is a policy decision. I’m not a policymaker, nor do I know everything that goes into the decision. However, currently the state is in a drought warning. The next step would be a drought emergency. The last time that occurred was from March of 2002 until January of 2003, according to the state.

The current drought is as significant and severe as it was then, so it’s very possible that we will go into an emergency this spring if drought conditions don’t improve. We already have volunteer water restrictions in effect by New Jersey american Water. a drought emergency doesn’t have to mean water restrictions statewide, but in the 2002-2003 emergency it did.

On June 20, 2002, the state issued mandatory restrictions. They halted commercial power washers, of flushing sewer systems, and mandated odd/even days for watering lawns. restaurants were told not to serve water unless requested by customers.

I can’t say for sure, but I bet that kind of restriction will take place if precipitation winds up at or below average over the next three months.

LAtlantic City mayor & Shell Oil ditch N.J. ocean wind turbines

ast Wednesday, Jan. 29, atlantic City Mayor Marty Small gave opponents of ocean wind turbines a pleasant surprise. He sent the above memo requesting a “special meeting of City Council” on this Wednesday, Feb. 5. Its purpose is to “repeal Ordinance 74 of 2024 Granting Certain Concessions, Permissions, and easements

This Ordinance was vigorously opposed by residents throughout the City. Three weeks later, opponents of the project filed a petition with the signatures of 2,092 voters demanding a public vote on the ordinance. atlantic City has an “Optional Municipal Charter” under the “Faulkner act”. Super Bowl ads: the game within the game

With an anticipated global audience of more than 100 million households expected to watch Sunday’s Super bowl LIX (59), there is a lot on the line, not just for the Philadelphia eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs, but also for mega brands like anheuser busch and Meta who are buying this year‘s Super bowl ads. back in November, Fox reported that it had already sold out its inventory of 30-second commercial time slots as sponsors flocked to get in front of the game’s massive, highly engaged audience, some of whom will be watching to see the ads as much as the game itself. In terms of ratings, colossal numbers are practically guaranteed, as the Super bowl dominates available lists of mostwatched TV broadcasts ever.

an estimated 123.7 million tuned in to watch the Chiefs overtime win over the 49ers in Super b owl LVIII last year, according to the rating company Nielsen, when combining CbS, Nickelodeon and Spanish language u nivision viewers. ad sales have already demonstrated expectations for more of the same in 2025.

a s Mary Whitfill roeloffs wrote after last year‘s Super bowl for Forbes magazine, “ b efore Sunday’s game,

OCEAN AQUARIUM

Super bowls made up eight of the 10 most-watched broadcast programs in history, according to Deadline – the 10th most-watched was President richard Nixon’s resignation speech broadcast from the Oval Office in 1974 and the most-watched program of all time is the apollo 11 moon landing, which stands far and above its competitors with 150 million viewers.”

previews early.

“(advertisers) need to maximize exposures to recover the $7 million investment in a 30 second ad has led to most brands teasing the ads and/ or pre-releasing them prior to the big game.” The experience is changing for audiences. Come game day, the ads are not the surprise they used to be.

Super bowl I took place on Jan. 15, 1967 at the Los angeles Memorial Coliseum, where the NFL champion Green bay Packers (now the NFC) defeated the aFL champion Kansas City Chiefs (now in the aFC) 35-10.

b ecause N bC and CbS both had TV broadcast rights (aFL and NFL games respectively), the TV rights were split by both networks. b etween CbS and N bC, more than 51 million viewers watched the game on TV. a 30-second ad cost just $42,000 (about $400,000 today) compared to this year’s number, which reportedly topped $8 million.

being a part of it is a big deal for big brands.

“at anheuser- busch we recognize the unique position that our decades of experience with the Super bowl has granted us,” said Kyle Norrington, chief commercial officer for anheuser- b usch. “For our brands to be an essential part of the broadcast, the in-game experience in bars and at-home watch parties across the country is a privilege we do not take lightly.

“a cultural moment like the Super bowl is when we truly show the world that no one can meet the moment like we can,” said Norrington. With so much on the line, how do brands approach the high-stakes Super bowl ad game? Forbes magazine said brands are promoting their ads across platforms and releasing

“ b y releasing their ads early, brands aren’t diluting the excitement; instead, they're expanding the playground, engaging audiences across multiple platforms, and ensuring that their message resonates far and wide, well beyond the confines of the Super bowl broadcast,” said evan Nierman founder and CeO of the crisis communications firm red banyan. Indeed, a long list of ads has already been revealed with clips of them released, especially those featuring celebrities.

Long before the game, we already know that b en affleck stars in a Dunkin’ ad alongside Jeremy Strong. Chris Hemsworth and Chris Pratt appear in Meta’s smart glasses commercial. Meg r yan and b illy Crystal will provide a flashback to “When Harry Met Sally” for Hellmann’s. Issa rae stars in a TurboTax ad. Tim robinson and Sam richardson appear in Totino’s ad with an alien. Kermit and Miss Piggy are featured in booking.com’s commercial. Gordon ramsay and Pete Davidson appear in HexClad’s ad. David b eckham stars in a Stella artois commercial. Martha Stewart and Charli XCX collaborate for uber eats. Catherine O’Hara and Willem Dafoe star in Michelob ultra’s pickleball-themed ad, and Shane Gillis and Post Malone appear for bud Light.

Nicole Greene, vice president and analyst in the Gartner Marketing, sees some advertising trends emerging this year.

“Nostalgia will play a significant role in this year's Super b owl advertising as brands continue to leverage its emotional connection with a wide range of audiences,” said Greene. “Familiar faces, celebrities, retro themes, and iconic music are likely to make appearances, tapping into viewers' fond memories and creating a sense of comfort and familiarity.”

buying expensive air time is only part of the Super bowl commitment for advertisers.

“Fox has already sold 30 second ads for $8 million, a new record. That’s just the cost of the spot of course, not the cost to produce the ad, and therefore this is often a big decision for a company to commit to one of these spots,” said Melinda roth, visiting associate professor of law at the George Washington university Law School.

Like the players in the game, Super bowl ads are under pressure to perform, noted robert Kolt, professor in the Michigan State university Department of advertising and Public relations.

“Super bowl ads have to be unique and memorable and recognizable long after the game,” he told MSu Today. “They have to be high quality in production, and they have to make people laugh.”

To appreciate the potential impact of the Super bowl commercials, consider the big hits from the past. Look no further. Here are the most viewed Super bowl ads of all time, ranked by youTube view. (Of course this does not account for the fact that older videos have been online, and accumulating views, much longer than newer ones, but it does provide a glimpse into what works in Super bowl advertising).

Not all Super bowl statistics are about yards and first downs. Many measure audiences, dollars and the once humble game's status as a worldwide marketing juggernaut –the unique american phenomenon known as the Super bowl commercial.

Copy editor and Contributing Writer James FitzPatrick has been a community journalist in Atlantic and Cape May counties for more than 30 years, including 20 years as editor of The Current Newspapers. He lives in Hammonton.

Celebrating Atlantic City's history through art

Between glimmering casinos and bustling streets, atlantic City is rich with history. There are a plethora of stories that remain untold and local artist and community leader Kenneth Lazan Faulk Jr. is aiming to shine a light on some of them.

Faulk, a multi-disciplinary artist known for his murals and graphic design work, is the creative mind behind a project to celebrate the 100th anniversary of atlantic City's all Wars Memorial b uilding, also known as Soldiers Home. The building, dedicated in august 1925, has been pivotal in atlantic City's black community for decades.

nessed the building's transformation over the decades. Faulk is gathering photographs and oral histories from community members to paint a vivid picture of the building's impact and role as a gathering place for b lack veterans.

The Soldiers Home, originally constructed as a place for black veterans during racial segregation, is being celebrated throughout the entirety of 2025. On Friday, Jan. 31, Faulk, atlantic City Council Vice President Kaleem Shabazz, atlantic City Mayor Marty Small, Sr., Midtown Community Development Corporation (CDC) Di -

rector Kacey Wilkins and community members gathered in the building's lobby to kick off the yearlong celebration with the centennial banner.

Faulk's personal connection to the building runs deep, as his grandmother lived just a block away.

"I've seen that building every day of my life. It's just a part of atlantic City's history and something that we need in the city to be able to celebrate these landmarks before they get forgotten or torn down, like so many of our buildings have been," said Faulk. "The fact that this building has been preserved and is still in use after all these years is important, and that's why I want to tell the story of the building."

a s the banner designer for the centennial celebration, Faulk has worked to highlight the significance of the Soldiers Home by incorporating both historical and modern elements. The banner features images of the building when it was first constructed alongside its current state and images of the two soldiers commemorated by statues outside the building.

"Those two things were very important to me to tell the story visually. To say something is 100 years old is one thing, but to see an image of [the building] when it was first built versus what it looks like now is another," he said.

A deeper dive

Faulk isn't stopping with the banner. He's also working on a documentary to delve even deeper into the Soldiers Home's history and its connection to atlantic City's b lack community through Midtown CDC and his nonprofit a rt Students League of atlantic City.

Through this documentary, Faulk hopes to capture personal stories and memories from local residents— particularly seniors—who have wit-

"My mom, who's going to be 83 this year, remembers the building when it was new, so to speak. [She] grew up in a segregated city, so these are things that are real to the community and part of our history, and it needs to be remembered," Faulk said. "and it needs to be put in a place of honor and respect, and that's what I hope to do with these projects and with the banner and with the documentary moving forward."

Midtown CDC's support: a partnership for progress

Midtown CDC, one of four CDCs in the city, plays a crucial role in revitalizing the Midtown neighborhood through housing projects, public art and cultural events.

For the centennial celebration of the Soldiers Home, Midtown CDC's

role has been instrumental in helping to bring Faulk's vision to life. Kacey Wilkins, Midtown CDC director, said that the organization quickly got involved when atlantic City Council Vice President Kaleem Shabazz approached Midtown about creating a banner to commemorate the anniversary.

Midtown CDC's funding from the New Jersey Neighborhood revitalization Tax Credit (N rTC) program and other grants has allowed the organization to support various community engagement initiatives, including creating banners, events and public art. While the documentary is still in the works, Faulk hopes to have the project complete by the anniversary celebration, but if not, he said he'll at least have the trailer.

Ten creative ways to show your Eagles spirit this Super Bowl Sunday

This Sunday, the Philadelphia eagles are heading to New Orleans to face off against the Kansas City Chiefs again. In 2023, the two teams played against each other and the Philly team lost, but this year is different. The last—and only—time they won the Super bowl was in 2018 and the pride felt in the area was unmatched.

Most South Jerseyans are Philly sports fans and are pretty loud about it. Whether you're cheering from home, attending a watch party or heading to the big game, here are 10 creative ways to showcase your team spirit.

1. Deck out your home with Eagles gear.

Hang up green and silver banners, toss a few football-shaped pillows on the couch and display your eagles memorabilia—whether it’s jerseys, signed footballs or vintage photos. you can even decorate your front yard with eagles flags and signs to spread the spirit to your neighbors!

2. Throw a watch party.

Get your friends and family together to watch the big game. Whether it’s a cozy gathering or a big bash, make it all about the b irds. Have green-and-white snacks (check out #6), encourage everyone to wear their best eagles gear and create a game day playlist. Don’t forget to sing “Fly, eagles, Fly!”

everyone pumped up. b ring out the pom-poms, flags and footballs, and encourage everyone to cheer their loudest for the eagles.

5. Wear your Eagles gear loud and proud.

There’s no better way to show your team spirit than by sporting your eagles gear. Jerseys, hats, scarves and jackets—wear it all! you can also deck out your pet with an eagles bandana to make sure no one is left out.

6. Create Philly-themed snacks and drinks

Get creative in the kitchen by whipping up some eagles-themed snacks and drinks. Here are some ideas: Dying some popcorn green for green and white popcorn, an eagles-themed cake, football-shaped foods or sugar cookies decorated with eagles colors. you can also get inspired by Philly staples, such as the classic Philly cheesesteak, sliders or soft pretzels.

3. Paint your face.

There’s nothing more visible than showing up with your face painted in eagles green! Whether it’s a small stripe or a full-on eagle design, face paint is a fantastic way to showcase your team spirit.

4. Organize a pep rally.

Gather your fellow eagles fans and host a mini pep rally in your neighborhood or at a local park to get

Serve drinks with eagles koozies and food with eagles plates. The possibilities are endless!

7. Philly pride nails. Show your team spirit by painting your nails green and white. If you want to go a step further, add the team’s logos or footballs!

8. Go to the game (or tailgate like you’re there!)

If you’re lucky enough to attend the Super bowl, get ready to represent your team loud and proud in the stadium! but if you’re staying home like the majority, create the ultimate tailgate experience in your own backyard. Fire up the grill, set up a tent and play tailgate games like cornhole.

9. Add some green to your hair. Want to add another spirited flair to your game ensemble, add some

green to your hair with hair chalk or temporary hair color spray! Just make sure to wash your hair before Monday so you don’t go to school or work with green hair (unless you’re OK with that).

10. Create custom Eagles apparel.

If you’re feeling crafty, try customizing your own eagles gear! you can personalize a jersey with your name or favorite player’s name, or design your own T-shirt with a fun slogan or logo. It's a great way to stand out and represent the team in your own unique way.

From tailgating in style to painting your face or hair in eagles green, there’s no shortage of ways to get into the Super bowl spirit and show your eagles pride. a s the team takes the field, make sure you’re showing up with your game face on—after all, eagles fans know how to bring the noise and support their team

Local healthcare hero honored

Views from the Shore

orking at a hospital, I get the opportunity to witness many incredible professionals who make a real impact on healthcare. Jacqueline evenson is one of those incredible individuals at Shore Medical Center. Having the privilege of working in the same hospital as her, I have been able to see firsthand how she has positively impacted our surgical department.

Her passion for Shore started long before she became a leader. Jacqueline was born and raised in Ocean City– in fact, she was born at the hospital. Her passion for healthcare became known from a young age. a s a middle schooler, she would spend hours studying her anatomy books and volunteering as a candy striper at the hospital. While volunteering, she

would admire the nurses and dream of one day becoming one herself. Jacqueline’s love for her hometown and Shore led her back to work at the hospital after earning her nursing degree. This was the beginning of a career that would change many people’s lives.

Jacqueline was recently honorably recognized with the 2024 Surgical Chairman’s award for her contributions to surgical care at Shore Medical Center. I believe that there is no one more deserving for this award. Her commitment, innovative mindset, and compassionate approach to the care of all patients has inspired all of us at the hospital.

One of her biggest accomplishments was the creation of our robotic surgery program. It has become a fully functioning, high-level robotics program with surgeons across multiple different specialties. Since the launch of the Da Vinci Xi surgical robot in October 2023, over 1,000 robotic surgeries have been performed. These surgeries have allowed patients faster recovery, less pain, reduced narcotic use, and lower risks of complications.

None of this would have been possible without Jacqueline’s ded -

ication. She coordinated surgeon training, managed equipment, and oversaw the logistics involved in constructing and running the program. Her leadership allowed Shore Medical Center the opportunity to provide cutting-edge care while keeping pa -

tient care close to home, something that means a lot to the community surrounding the hospital.

Over the years, I have watched Jacqueline transform Shore Medical Center in so many ways. From playing a crucial role in integrating the b rainlab spine navigation system to the Da Vinci Xi surgical robot- her accomplishments are many. I am proud to know this talented, driven, and compassionate professional and to be able to observe her passion for her patients at Shore Medical Center. Her dedication has not only transformed surgical care but it has also left a lasting impact on all of us fortunate enough to know her. Congratulations, Jacqueline- this honor is well deserved, and I know your impact will continue to be felt for many years to come.

Robert ruffalo, proprietor of atlantic City’s iconic Princeton antiques bookshop, a veritable treasure trove of Jersey Shore books and memorabilia, recently called with an exciting new discovery. ruffalo happened upon the Official Souvenir Program for the 1922 atlantic City Pageant. This is an incredible piece of history for a couple of reasons: The 1922 atlantic City Pageant was actually the second Miss america Pageant, but the “Miss america” title, coined earlier that year, wasn’t widely used until much later. Indeed by 1933, the event was still being called the “atlantic City Pageant,” though the words, “The Coronation of Miss america Pageant,” do appear in small

‘Atlantic City Pageant’

letters at the bottom of the program’s cover. b ut more importantly, this fascinating little piece of history shows just how much the city, and its people, have evolved over 102 years.

The opening paragraph of the foreword to this 84-page program book is worth noting:

“Atlantic City is the world’s premier playground. In the charms of novelty and everlasting variety, it surpasses the most celebrated of European watering places. Not even the famed Brighton of England, the chateau region of Switzerland, the bath districts of Carlsbad, not the beautiful Mediterranean with its Monte Carlo, Nice and Naples compare with it in popularity, comfort, pleasure, and health-giving qualities, the four seasons through.

visitors who have been charmed by its varied allurements. It is truly ‘The Playground of the world.’”

The three-day event ran from Sept. 6 through Sept. 8, and those three days were chock full of celebrations, contests, rolling chair parades, tournaments and all else.

Camden began, followed by the arrival of King Neptune at the Inlet’s atlantic City yacht Club, a race of flying boats, a diving exhibition, an exhibition tennis match, a soccer match for the Championship of South Jersey, a handicapped boat race, and a swimming competition between lifeguards that took place around the Steel Pier. and that only covered the morning and afternoon! The evening’s festivities included a concert at Garden Pier, presentations to the winners of the afternoon’s contests, and in the Trellis room of the ritz-Carlton Hotel, the american beauty reception and ball.

“It is the marine metropolis, a city of surprises. As a pleasure and health resort, Atlantic City is without parallel. It justly merits the encomiums bestowed by the millions of

On opening day, starting at 9 a.m., the event kicked off with a golf tournament held at the atlantic City and Linwood country clubs. at 10:20, an automobile run to atlantic City from

The “beauty” part of the pageant began in earnest at 8:15 p.m. on Thursday at the Steel Pier. This segment of the festivities was called the “National beauty Tournament,” where “selected beauties from the 57 competitive cities (note, the contestants back then represented cities rather than states) will be

1921 Pageant Bathing Beauty

judged in evening costume and prizes awarded.”

The following evening, also at the Steel Pier, was the “final judging of the nine winners of the three beauty divisions of the bathers revue,” with the categories being amateur, professional and inner-city for first, second, and third place in each division.

The grand finale, which took place later that evening at Million Dollar Pier, was described as the “selection and crowning of america’s Most beautiful bathing Girl, and presentation of the $5,000 grand prize: The Golden Mermaid, presented by King Neptune.” There’s no specific criteria listed as to exactly how winners were chosen, though it’s pretty clear that the bathing suit competition was the most important. a s the program stated:

“Arrayed in the most becoming of bathing suits, one will see numbers of the beauties that are so well known to us all. The last division is the one that interests everyone the most. Here will be seen America’s most beautiful girls in bathing costume. As they march down the beach, they will be judged by thousands, and here the decision of the crowds, expressed by applause, will have much to do with deciding who shall be declared America’s Most Beautiful Girl for 1922.”

a nd yes, there were judges as well, and the list, for the time, was quite impressive. among them were artists Norman rockwell, Howard Chandler Christy and Joseph Cummings Chase; Vogue and Vanity Fair magazine a rts editor Heyworth Campbell, theatrical producer Lee Shubert, film actress a nita Stewart, and the one and only Florenz Ziegfeld of the “Ziegfeld Follies” fame. It’s interesting to note that, in a competition for “america’s Most b eautiful Girl for 1922,” there was only one woman among the judges, not surprising for the time.

Naturally, the program itself is filled with paid advertisements, and some of those advertisers are still in business today. Lucky Strike cigarettes, Coca Cola, Colgate, Coty Perfumes, James Salt Water Taffy, yellow Taxicab, Oldsmobile, breyers, and Wawa Dairy Farms are still very much with us in some way, shape or form.

The winner of the 1922 pageant was Mary Catherine Campbell Townley, who also won the following year, becoming the only contestant to win the pageant twice. She competed for the third time in 1924 and made it to

first runner-up.

Her boyfriend got the whole ball rolling when he submitted a picture of Campbell to the pageant while she was a student at east High School in Columbus, Ohio. It wasn’t revealed until sometime later that Campbell was only 16 when she was crowned. She lied about her age in order to get into the competition.

a s a result of all the notoriety, Campbell received offers to make movies, to appear in two broadway shows, and to become a Ziegfeld Girl. b ut her mother didn’t allow her daughter to accept any of those offers, though she did permit her daughter to sing “My buddy” on the b .F. Keith vaudeville circuit for three weeks.

She went on to attend Ohio State university as an art major, and later went to Ohio Wesleyan u niversity. She was the first Miss america winner to attend college. Now that was progress.

Eagles looking for Super Bowl revenge

The statistics and accomplishments are impressive.

On paper, the Philadelphia e agles own an advantage over the Kansas City Chiefs in virtually every category entering Super bowl LIX.

running back Saquon barkley became the ninth running back in NFL history to rush for over 2,000 yards in the regular season and has continued his string of superb performances in the playoffs.

Trick or treaters were still eating their Halloween candy the last time quarterback Jalen Hurts threw an interception.

both barkley and Hurts play behind a wall of blockers that is equally adept at opening canyon-sized holes on running plays and forming a nearly impenetrable cocoon when it’s time

to pass.

The offense set a record for most points in an NFC Championship game with 55 against Washington two weeks ago.

The defense has likewise been impressive.

Linebacker Zach baun, defensive tackle Jalen Carter and rookie cornerbacks Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean have been among the best in the league at their respective positions.

suited to handle the distractions, hoopla and pressure.

edge rusher Nolan Smith leads the NFL with four sacks in the postseason.

So why are the Chiefs regarded as slight favorites on Sunday? because of intangibles that don’t show up on stat sheets.

The Chiefs own a huge advantage in one of the most important categories: big-game experience.

Coach a ndy reid, quarterback Patrick Mahomes and Taylor Swift’s boyfriend are in the midst of their own version of an “ eras Tour.”

Sunday’s game marks the Chiefs’ fifth Super bowl appearance in the last six seasons. They are uniquely

Mahomes doesn’t always post glittery stats, but there is no one better at rising to the occasion under pressure. When the Chiefs are in need of a big play to extend a drive or win a game, he almost always delivers.

Travis Kelce is in the conversation as the best tight end in NFL history.

Defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo is vying for his fifth Super bowl ring after winning three with the Chiefs and one with the New york Giants.

They also have a motive. a victory on Sunday over the eagles at the Caesars Superdome would give them the first-ever Super bowl three-peat and establish the Chiefs as one of the league’s alltime great franchises.

Can the eagles win on Sunday? Certainly. They nearly knocked off the Chiefs two seasons ago, falling 38-35 in Super bowl LVII in arizona after leading 27-21 entering the fourth quarter, and could very well earn their second Super bowl championship in eight seasons.

Will they win? I don’t think so. although I wouldn’t be at all surprised if the light poles are greased in Philadelphia, my instincts are telling me the only local victory parade in our area will be in Vineland for Chiefs running back and native son Isiah Pacheco.

Of course, that gut feeling could be left over from last week’s Wing Fest at the Golden Nugget in atlantic City.

My prediction: Chiefs 27, eagles 25.

Autism fundraiser to draw thousands

This President’s Day weekend, thousands will take to the Promenade in Sea Isle City for an annual tradition that is over 17 years in the making. The run and Walk for autism will bring the community together in support of children and young adults throughout the South Jersey region. Since its inception, the family friendly event has raised over $1 million for local school districts, support groups, and families.

additionally, this year’s event will benefit Shore Medical Center and their ongoing initiatives to support the growing autism population. Thanks to the support of the Monichetti family, the Somers Point hospital is slated to open a new outpatient sensory lab this spring, which will aim to provide services like blood draws and eKGs in a sensory-friendly environment. The room will be equipped with activity panels, a white noise machine, sensory projectors, a vibroacoustic lounger, and

“a ny day you can do something for children with disabilities is a good day.” Mike Monichetti, owner of Mike’s Seafood . The longtime Sea Isle resident, began the event in 2009. He and his wife, Jeannie, have two children on the autism spectrum and have dedicated their lives to helping other families find the necessary resources in atlantic and Cape May Counties. “I believe I definitely got the calling to do something, and that’s what I’m doing.”

to make their stay less scary. With an aging autism population, there is also more being done to ensure adults on the spectrum have the care they need. “We identified that we needed to expand this program and develop an adult sensory treatment care area (to) serve our population 18 years of age and greater”, says Sherri richmond, Director of emergency Service at Shore Medical Center.

The new program, set to be unveiled this summer, is unique to the region and will consist of a dedicated pre-registration hub, along with sensory-friendly modalities such as weighted blankets and soft lighting. Shore’s clinical staff will also have extensive training to meet the needs of each patient and ensure comfort from the moment they arrive until discharge.

Last year, the hospital received a $20,000 grant from the e agles lautism Foundation to fund the new adult sensory care treatment area. b rian Cahill, director of marketing, says the community realizes how important the initiative is. “This is a true community effort, from the people who are funding the project to the people who are providing the care.”

Since its inception, the run and Walk for autism has drawn tens of thousands of supporters. Last year’s event included a surprise appearance from Jason Kelce, former center for the Philadelphia eagles and Super b owl champion, drawing much attention and millions of views from all corners of the world. “a lot of different social media sites and media outlets picked it up.” Monichetti says registration for this year’s event is up

40% ahead of last year, surpassing expectations. “It might be the Kelce effect.”

Organizers for the run and Walk are anticipating record turnouts, with over 5,000 people expected to be present.

attendees will also enjoy a plethora of activities throughout the event. Families are invited to gather inside the heated tents at e xcursion Park, adjacent to the Promenade, prior to

and after the run and Walk for a continental buffet, live music, and awards presentation. There will be a plethora of kid-friendly activities, including magicians, costume characters, and face painting. Parents and caregivers can also visit the various resource tables and learn about available services in the area. a s for Monichetti, he is grateful to have the backing of Sea Isle City, including the police department, public works, and area businesses. “I am very blessed to have the support that I have; it really makes it easy to put an event on like this.”

The Mike’s Seafood run/ Walk for autism will be held at 42nd St. & the Promenade in Sea Isle City on Saturday, Feb. 15 at 12 p.m. Participants can pre-register through Feb. 14 at www. polarbearrunwalkforautism.com or sign up in-person.

One of the country’s oldest, longest highways runs through several local cities

Did you know the White Horse Pike (u .S. route 30) is one of the country's oldest, longest and most historically significant highways?

Often called the "Lincoln Highway," route 30 stretches from the e ast Coast to the West Coast, spanning 3,073 miles and running from atlantic City, N.J. to a storia, Ore.

The highway begins at the eastern terminus in atlantic City, following a route through the states of New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska, Wyoming, Idaho and Oregon, before reaching its western terminus in a storia, a coastal city in Oregon.

It’s the third-longest u.S. highway, following u.S. 20 and u.S. 6, and has played a key role in shaping transportation and development in the country for more than a century.

Historical significance

u.S. 30 was established in 1926 as part of the original u.S. Highway System, which aimed to create a more

cohesive and organized national road network. The route follows the path of what was known as the Lincoln Highway, which was the first road across the united States, established in 1913 by a group of businessmen and civic leaders, including Carl G. Fisher, who also helped develop the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The Lincoln Highway connected New york City to San Francisco. It was conceived as a transcontinental route to promote commerce, tourism and better infrastructure. u.S. 30 has remained an essential route in the u.S. Highway System, even though much of its path overlaps with Interstate Highways. u nlike other historic highways like u.S. 66, which was decommissioned, u .S. 30 has

remained active throughout its existence, making it the only u.S. highway that has been a coast-to-coast route since the establishment of the u.S. Numbered Highway System.

The White Horse Pike section of route 30 runs through several towns, starting near the b enjamin Franklin b ridge in Camden and ending at the intersection of absecon b oulevard, Virginia avenue and adriatic avenue in atlantic City.

How the White Horse Pike was named

The White Horse Pike's origins date back to 1854 when the White Horse Turnpike Company converted an old Lenni Lenape trail into a toll road. It connected Camden to the White Horse Tavern on Old egg Harbor road in White Horse, N.J. and became a popular route.

However, by the late 1870s, trains overtook toll roads in popularity, and by 1893, the turnpike stopped collecting tolls. by 1913, it was renamed the White Horse Trail, and in 1922, it was paved in concrete, becoming the world’s

longest concrete-paved highway. The opening of the ben Franklin bridge in 1926 further connected the road to Philadelphia, cementing its importance.

The story of the other equestrian-named highway, the b lack Horse Pike, started in 1795 when surveyors laid a new route, which evolved through several names before becoming the Camden and blackwoodtown Turnpike in 1855.

after the state purchased it in 1903, the toll was removed, and the blackwood Pike was renamed. In 1925, developers renamed it the black Horse Pike and extended it to atlantic City, hoping to capitalize on the White Horse Pike's success. The black Horse Pike quickly became known as the “second White Horse Pike to the shore.”

both pikes are celebrated for their retro charm, with landmarks like the White Horse Drive-In tower, a towering sculpture of a horse.

Today, these historic roads remain vital routes, filled with quirky attractions and offering a nostalgic glimpse into the past while continuing to connect travelers to the Jersey Shore.

AC casinos look for a big Super Bowl win

This Sunday—a.k.a. Super

b owl Sunday—is professional sports’ single-biggest day of the year. a nd

it’s not too shabby for atlantic City’s nine casinos either. a s a matter of fact, it’s pretty darn important.

That’s because it has historically been a major revenue source for the local gaming industry. Prior to the advent of legal sports betting in 2018, the casinos would host its top players at lavish watch parties which sometimes featured (and still do) players and/or radio sports talkers providing real-time commentary. b ut the legalization of wagering on games has magnified the game’s importance to the casinos’ bottom lines.

Members of the public can now watch what those commercial entities not officially sanctioned by the NFL refer to as the “ b ig Game” in sportsbooks where bets can be made not just on the outcome of the contest, but on such things as the point total “over/under” and which player will score the game’s first touchdown. and unlike the high rollers who qualify for free hotel rooms, meals and the like, those who aren’t bigtime gamblers will be paying out-ofpocket.

“The Super b owl is our Super bowl,” confirmed Pat Glose, the director of the Fanatics Sportsbook at Ocean Casino resort’s The Gallery bar, book & Games. “ unambiguously it's the number-one day in the sports book.”

One reason, he suggested, is the experience of watching the game in that somewhat unique setting.

“This is an event that people want to experience in a larger-than-life way [that’s different] from how they would at home,” he said. “So, it really is an opportunity to bring in lots of new people that might not be familiar with sports betting or the casino writ large. It certainly brings a different [group of people] to the property

than otherwise might be there.”

a ccording to Joseph Giunta, who as vice-president and general manager of Tropicana atlantic City is the boardwalk pleasure dome’s top executive, the introduction of sports books at his and the other Caesars entertainment-owned properties in town—Caesars atlantic City and Harrah’s resort atlantic City—has had a significant—and positive—impact on Super bowl-related business.

“We run about 30 points higher [hotel] occupancy,” he offered. “We didn't see that much prior to legal sports books. Maybe you had like a five-point lift or a 10-point lift. There are so many more people in town--for the hype of the game, to bet on the game, to take part in it. and the viewing parties are that much more fun.”

Giunta, with whom we spoke last Saturday, noted that all three Caesars-run sports books were “close to selling out the [reserved-seating] sections” and predicted that by the time you read this, they will be completely gone. b ut he did point out that standing-room space should be available for Sunday’s eagles-Chiefs throwdown.

The event will feature female amateur boxers from the Pee Wee to Masters divisions, providing a platform for athletes of all ages and skill levels to compete, develop and thrive in the world of sports.

The east Coast Women’s Championships is the brainchild of visionary leadership Jackie atkins, in collaboration with her charitable foundation, the New Jersey Give a Kid a Dream Program (NJGaK aD). This tournament offers female boxers the opportunity to showcase their talents and pursue their dreams in a sport where such opportunities have historically been limited. Coach Jackie’s mission is supported by yessenia Montalvo and Heidi Sheehan, fellow female coaches and gym owners in New Jersey, who share her dedication to

advancing women’s boxing.

In addition to the tournament, a special 1-hour Non-Contact Fitness Seminar will take place on Saturday, Feb 8, from 12-1 p.m. The seminar, designed for girls and women of all ages, will focus on flexibility and basic boxing movements. Participants will also receive one complimentary ticket to the Showboat’s Island Waterpark, redeemable in 2025 (retail value up to $100). Space is limited and the $10 registration fee (which benefits the NJGaK aD Foundation) is required to attend.

“at a time when girls and women are choosing boxing as their sport, the east Coast Women’s Championships offer an essential platform for them to demonstrate their talent and gain invaluable experience,” said Jackie atkins, C eO of NJGaK aD. “This event is not just about competition—it’s about empowerment, growth, and creating a brighter future for women in sports. The Showboat’s commitment

to hosting this event on the e ast Coast makes it even more special, as a venue that continues to support the strength of overall development of female athletes.”

The tournament, sanctioned by uSa boxing, invites female amateurs of all levels, ranging from novice competitors to seasoned athletes in highly competitive brackets. by bringing athletes together in one venue, the event not only reduces barriers to entry but also fosters camaraderie and growth within the sport.

“With no national women’s tournament scheduled for 2025, this

event is a game-changer,” added atkins. “We’re excited to fill this gap and bring a high-caliber competition to the east Coast that will significantly impact the future of women’s boxing.”

The Showboat resort is honored to host this historic event. “at Showboat, we are fully committed to championing female athletes and advancing women in sports,” said anthony Faranca, General Manager of the Showboat. He added, “We are thrilled to welcome these incredibly talented athletes to atlantic City and be part of this groundbreaking moment in women’s boxing.” atkins added, “I am honored to work alongside a nthony, whose unwavering support of the NJGaK aD program and dedication to women’s empowerment are truly making a lasting and positive impact on our kids and our community.”

The tournament is open to all female amateur boxers who register through uSa b oxing. Coaches and officials must also register online. For all registration details, please visit: https://usaboxing.webpoint.us/

This event is a can’t-miss opportunity for boxing fans, friends, and family to witness the future of women’s boxing on the east Coast and be part of history! General admission tickets can be purchased at the door for $30 per attendee ($40 ringside).

Lizzie Rose Music Room: South Jersey’s best-kept secret no more

Tune In, Turn On

With Doug Deutsch

even before I moved back east in 2022, my curiosity about all the

newest live music venues in the South Jersey Shore area was piqued. One place I kept hearing about is Lizzie rose Music room, located a short ride up route 9 on Main Street in Tuckerton.

During my first visit – which might have been a show featuring “The Piana From Savannah,” Victor Wainwright – I fell hard for the 70-seat, cozy, living room setting where every seat in the house is a good one.

With the big-time national acts Lizzie r ose proprietor/ booker Lou reichert continues to bring in regularly, by all means you should put it on your to-do list, if you haven’t yet visited the ‘ rose to see a concert.

“We strive to offer a diverse program of music. From blues to singer/songwriters, this is our mission,” said reichert in a recent interview. “Ten years in, we continue to grow our base of Lr M r members. What we need now is additional local business sponsorship support.”

We asked reichert – a colorful character if there ever was one – to name some of his favorite shows at Lizzie rose through the years.

“Shemika Copeland, Tommy Castro, Quinn Sullivan, Dead Gras, Live at the Fillmore (allman brothers tribute), bywater Call, b illy Walton (who performs with his full band at the ‘ rose this Saturday, Feb. 8, and again on May 24), James Maddock, Damn The Torpedoes (Tom Petty tribute), and Lil’ ed & blues Imperials among many many others,” reichert replied.

The February lineup at Lizzie rose is especially impressive, considering we’re in the dead of winter – not exactly a time when people like to go out.

among the upcoming highlights: Multiple award-winning Chicago blues artist Toronzo Cannon on Feb. 5; the aforementioned b illy Walton band, Feb. 8; multi-instrumentalist/ blues-rocker Katie Henry (pictured), Feb. 14; past Grammy nominee, roots musician Guy Davis, Feb. 16; b illy Hector, longtime blues-rock guitarist from nearby a sbury Park, Feb. 22, and powerhouse blues vocalist alexis P. Suter and band, Feb. 28.

Looking ahead, Lizzie rose presents a ‘Female-Led Music Showcase’ featuring sets by allison Stella, Space, amy elizabeth band, and emerson Woolf and the Wishbones March 21; eclectic roots-rock group b ees Deluxe with emerging blues-rock trio Twisted Livin’, March 22; Phillybased rolling Stones tribute b rown Sugar, a pril 26, and the return of multiple- b Ma winner/blues ‘n’ soul saxophonist/vocalist Vanessa Collier on May 29. Casino Happenings:

This Friday, Feb. 7 is the opening of “ b ecoming Led Zeppelin,” the first-ever-authorized film documentary about the legendary b ritish rock group, at the acoustically-delightful, 290-seat, state-of-the-art IMa X Theatre at the Tropicana. a must-see if you’re a Led Zeppelin fan!

borgata Casino/resort offers two quality shows this weekend: veteran aussie rockers Little river band (“ reminiscing,” “Cool Change,” “Happy anniversary”) on Feb. 7, and ZZ Top guitarist billy F. Gibbons on Feb. 8 (I’m willing to bet he performs their hits “La Grange,” “Sharp Dressed Man” and “Cheap Sunglasses” among others).

Finally, don’t miss three big shows by popular jam band Widespread Panic at Hard rock Live at etess arena, Feb. 14-16. Much like Dead & Company and other jam-centric groups, a WP gig is a three-hour experience.

Drink Up!

According to songwriter and performer Darius rucker, “There are two seasons: Football season and waiting for football season.” and this year, South Jersey’s near-home team is going to Super bowl LIX! I know I’m the wine guy… football fans drink beer! Well, not all of us. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy a good beer. However, in my experience, most beer drinkers do not match the style of beer (lager, stout, IPa , etc.) to what they are eating. Instead, they drink the style they prefer, perhaps changing things up seasonally. On the other hand, wine drinkers tend to pair their wines with

their food. Super bowl Sunday is the second biggest food day of the year in america, surpassed only by Thanksgiving. allow me to offer wine pairings for the foods that many folks enjoy when settling in for a game. based on a compilation of online sources, the top five foods for the Super bowl are wings, chili, nachos, chips with salsa or guacamole, and pizza.

Chicken wings can be a bit complicated to pair with wine due to the variety of sauce options available. If you choose the classic spicy buffalo hot wings, try a bright, refreshing riesling such as the Nik Weis St u rbans-Hof Mosel riesling from Germany or a Domaine barmès- b uecher Gewürztraminer from alsace, France. either will tame the spiciest wings. If you choose barbecue sauce on your wings, go with a delicious red wine like the OZV Zinfandel or the Old Soul Petite Sirah from California. If you’re willing to go out on a wing (limb), sparkling wine with chicken wings is Nick Foles’ surprise play. The acidity and bubbles

of a wine like brilla! Prosecco or Dibon b rut Cava do a great job of cutting through the richness of fried chicken. Why not go for the win with Champagne? Get a bottle or two of Nicolas Feuillatte blue Label brut Champagne, one for wings and one for celebrating (hopefully) at the end of the game.

Thirteen sommeliers were asked what the perfect wine is to pair with chili. Selections varied from a semisweet riesling, such as Chateau Ste. Michelle, to a Chenin b lanc, such as the Vigneau-Chevreau Cuvee Silex Vouvray, to a rosé, such as beach by Whispering angel, to a Cote du rhone red blend, such as Le Grand Valmal Generation GSM b lend. Though I wasn’t one of the thirteen, my pick would be a Spanish r ioja like the ramirez Piscina Seleccion rioja reserva. Perfect for chili!

I love nachos and will probably have some on Super bowl Sunday. a red wine from Spain, such as the Zorzal Malayeto Garnacha or the Clos De Tafall red, would pair perfectly. However, I will likely opt for a refreshing Spanish white wine. albarino is my “go-to” for Mexican food flavors. Paco and Lola albarino or Nora albarino will be my choice for the big game.

Chips with salsa and/or guacamole is another menu item that allows for many wine options. I would recommend a nice medium-bodied red wine,

such as the Juggernaut Pinot Noir from California’s russian river Valley or the Montinore b orealis Pinot Noir from the Willamette Valley of Oregon. Sangiovese wine from Tuscany, such as the La Gerla Poggio gli angeli Sangiovese, would also be awesome. However, if you are the one who keeps dipping into the guac, I would call an audible and call in a white wine, such as Spain’s alegre Valganon rioja b lanco or Italy’s Pfitscher Pinot bianco.

according to an article on foxsports.com, as many as 48 million a mericans will have pizza on the table for the Super bowl. That is 350% more than on a regular football Sunday. Stories abound regarding the origin of pizza. However, my mother’s family emigrated from Naples, Italy to the u .S., and, in my humble opinion, so did pizza. When it comes to pairing wine with food, my rule is, “drink what you eat,” so wine from Central Italy is really the only choice. Naples is located in the Italian wine region of Campania, where the

premiere grape is a glianico. For me, the perfect wine pairing with pizza is rocca Del Dragone Campania a glianico. This wine is full-bodied, rich-flavored, and is a Napoletano pizza wine of choice. If you are having a white pizza, I would suggest Terredora di Paolo Greco di Tufo Loggia della Serra. This white wine from Campania pairs well with all that wonderful mozzarella and ricotta. I’m getting hungry now!

What if you are going with foods that are quintessentially related to the hometown of your favorite team? My research tells me that for Kansas City, barbecued pork ribs is the food most related to that city. For this dish, a red blend is the wine to serve. I would suggest either a California blend, such as J. Lohr’s Pure Paso Proprietor’s red b lend, or a French b ordeaux b lend like Château Carbonneau Sequoia b ordeaux. No food is more related to Philly than the cheesesteak sandwich, “wit or witout.” Other sommeliers chose

anything from Merlot to Malbec or from Cabernet Franc to Carmenere. My suggestions are either a great California Cabernet Sauvignon like Daou Cabernet Sauvignon Special Select or a Vallone Flaminio Primitivo from Salento in Puglia, Italy. Italy’s Primitivo is the same grape known as Zinfandel in California.

Game time will be just days away when this article hits the stands. I actually remember the very first Super bowl in January 1967. NFL Hall of Fame Quarterback bart Starr and the Green bay Packers defeated NFL Hall of Fame Quarterback Len Dawson and the Kansas City Chiefs 35-10 in the Los angeles Memorial Coliseum. That was a little over 58 years ago, but the memory of that day is still etched in my memory. Whether you are a Chiefs fan or an eagles fan, or if you just enjoy the food, the halftime show, or the commercials, here’s to a great game. Feel free to contact me with any questions, or let me know your favorite football food pairings, at dsetley@passionvines. com. until next time, enjoy the game and happy wining!

Get your dog on a treadmill

If you have a treadmill in your house just taking up space, consider training your dog to walk on it. There are a few factors to consider when putting a dog onto a treadmill made for humans. However, for most dogs, it is perfectly fine to train your dog to walk on your treadmill.

The first consideration is the size of your dog versus the length of the ramp of the treadmill. Larger dogs may not be able to actually jog on a small treadmill because there is not enough ramp space for them to fully extend their legs, resulting in them having to adjust their gait. However, they should be able to at least walk. If you have a larger dog like a German Shepherd or retriever, you may want to consider purchasing a treadmill specifically made for dogs so that they can extend their legs in -

to a full jog or trot. However, regardless of dog size, you can train your dog to walk on a human treadmill. Small to medium-sized dogs can absolutely jog or run on a human treadmill.

To train your dog to jog on the treadmill, you will need to make it fun and rewarding. With the treadmill off, I lure my dogs to climb onto it with a highly rewarding treat. Then, I give them lots of praise and a few small treats for doing so. I use the word “climb” to tell my dogs that I want them to climb up onto something. after they can consistently climb up onto the treadmill, I stop luring them and just ask them to go to it. When I think the dog is ready, I turn the treadmill on so the dog can hear the motor. If your dog jumps off, let them. use the treat to get them back onto the treadmill and make a huge fuss if they do. Pairing a high-value treat with hearing the sound of the motor normally makes it worthwhile for the dog to get back onto the treadmill. remember, if you’re using treats to get your dog onto the treadmill, you will need to feed them less dinner.

If your dog is out of shape or heavy, you will want to ease them into actually jogging or running on the treadmill. Keep the walking sessions short by starting with maybe five minutes at a low-speed walk. a s your dog starts to lose weight and gain confidence on the treadmill, you can increase the speed and time. at no time should your dog run in an outof-control fashion on the treadmill. Much like doing roadwork, trotting is the speed that will be the most beneficial to your dog in terms of burning calories and toning up their muscles. running fast where the dog's legs are flailing around is not helpful and could lead to injury. Instead of making the treadmill faster, try increasing

the incline to make the session more challenging.

I have a treadmill that is built for dogs made by Dog Pacer. I took the high side panels of the treadmill off to make it easier for dogs to hop on and off. I also don’t tie dogs to the treadmill and allow them to hop off if they need to. Ideally, I train a dog to stay on the treadmill and enjoy jogging on it. you can find used dog treadmills, if interested, to save money on the purchase. Teaching your dog to walk or jog on a treadmill can be a mental workout but also an effective way to help them on their weight loss journey.

Redefining beauty standards: embracing body positivity

Empowering Women

At Lift & Glitz Training Studio, the word “Glitz” isn’t just about sparkles or glamour—it’s about confidence, self-love and embracing what makes you unique. When I started this studio, I knew I wanted it to be more than just a gym. I wanted it to be a space where women could feel strong, empowered and beautiful—not because of a number on the scale, but because of how they feel about themselves.

For too long, beauty has been defined by unrealistic standards— airbrushed magazine covers, social media filters and a narrow definition of what a “perfect” body should look like. but here’s the truth: beauty isn’t about fitting into a mold. beauty is strength.

beauty is confidence. beauty is yOu

a s a studio owner, trainer and woman, I’ve seen firsthand how damaging these unrealistic expectations can be. but I’ve also seen the incredible transformation that happens when women shift their mindset, embrace body positivity and start seeing themselves as the powerful, beautiful individuals they are.

So how do we redefine beauty and embrace self-love? Here are a few ways to cultivate a stronger, more confident self-image.

1. Stop negative self-talk

How often do you look in the mirror and immediately pick yourself apart? It’s time to change the conversation you have with yourself. Instead of saying, “I hate my thighs,” try, “My legs are strong and carry me through life.” Instead of, “I wish my stomach was flatter,” say, “My body is capable, and I’m grateful for it.” The words you tell yourself matter—choose them wisely.

2. Focus on what your body can do, not just how it looks at Lift & Glitz, we celebrate strength over size. Can you lift heavier weights than you did last month?

a re you feeling more energized? Can you run after your kids without getting tired? These victories are far more important than a number on the scale. your body is powerful—treat it with the respect it deserves.

3. Curate your social media feed

Social media can be a powerful tool, but it can also be toxic if you’re constantly comparing yourself to unrealistic images. u nfollow accounts that make you feel less than enough and start following body-positive influencers, fitness pages that promote strength and self-love and people who uplift and inspire you.

4. Dress for confidence, not for the scale

Wear clothes that make you feel good right now, not "when you lose weight" or "when you tone up." Confidence isn’t about size; it’s about how you feel in your own skin. Find pieces that make you feel empowered and wear them with pride.

5. Surround yourself with positive energy

b eing around women who uplift and encourage one another is life-changing. That’s exactly what we

foster at Lift & Glitz—a community where women of all shapes, sizes, and backgrounds support each other. Find your tribe, whether it’s in a fitness studio, a friend group or an online community.

Beauty is more than skin deep at the end of the day, beauty isn’t about size, shape or weight. It’s about the energy you bring into a room, the kindness you show yourself and others and the confidence you carry in your soul. you are already beautiful, exactly as you are.

Hopefully, your advisor regularly reaches out to you via emails, videos, articles or phone calls when they have important information to share with you. but when should you reach out to your advisor? There are many life events that could be reasons why you should consult them, and I thought we would cover some of the more common reasons for you to reach out.

1. Change in a job status

If you change jobs, there are several reasons to consult your advisor. Deciding if you should roll over your retirement plan is the top among them. you might also need to review our new company’s benefits package, including insurance (Health/ Life/Disability), 401(k) plan, and tax withholding. The new job could also entail more or less expenses relat-

ed to commuting or mileage, which could all affect your plan. Losing a job requires planning for health insurance, cash flow, and more.

2. Kids preparing to go to college

Ideally, two years before your kids go to college, you should run a mock FaFSa to get an idea of where you stand regarding financial aid. Since the FaFSa looks at your tax return from two years prior, you might want to do some proactive planning to potentially reduce your expected family contribution (eFC), which could help lower the out-of-pocket cost of college.

3. Change in marital status

a marriage or divorce can obviously have a dramatic effect on your financial plan. alimony, child support, pension and retirement plan divisions can all add up to a major change in your future circumstances. a marriage, especially a second marriage, requires additional planning, particularly if assets are intended to stay with each of your respective families.

4. Death or care of a parent e state planning for your aging parents can mean the difference between preserving an inheritance or potentially costing you money. Sadly, I’ve seen many children of aging par-

ents have to postpone their own retirement due to the costs associated with helping parents. Proper planning could help mitigate these costs.

5. Planning to retire

While the prospect of retirement is certainly appealing, there are many decisions that need to be made in preparation for retirement itself. Health insurance, Social Security claiming, pension options, and retirement plan distributions are all things to be considered before you stop working.

6. Birth of a child

a new baby brings lots of joy but also a lot of required time, and sometimes planning is the last thing on your mind. Things to consider are 529 college savings plans, reviewing your life insurance, and your overall estate plan. Important decisions need to be made, such as who would have guardianship of your child if something happened to you.

7. Change in your health a change in health status can require modifying your financial plan. revised life expectancy assumptions or increases in expenses tend to be the most common changes.

8. Major purchase

Ideally, you should contact your

advisor before making a major purchase. advisors could help decide the most tax-efficient assets to use or if financing is appropriate. They could also help you consider the effects of this new purchase on the viability of your financial plan.

Great communication between clients and advisors is crucial for the quality of both the relationship and the accuracy of the plan itself.

We enter 2025 with many goals, new year resolutions, and plans and optimism in all aspects of our lives and daily living.

a s we keep warm and toasty inside from the cold weather with a roller-coaster football season coming to a close and the exciting grand finale of Super bowl LIX this weekend, we are hopeful for our eagles to win.

This also brings us much hope as we are one step closer to spring. even though the groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil, said six more weeks of winter are coming, happily the real estate Godmother predicts an early spring real estate market. The weather may be cold outside, but the real estate market is hot!

When assessing and in preparing for selling your home and placing your home on the market, many believe and statistics show, that springtime is the best time to get your plan into action to be prepared and ahead of the game.

real estate is often compared to a sporting event. We are now in the first quarter of the game – and the first quarter of the year. We are hitting the ground running in 2025.

The dynamics of the market are always changing. Currently the local housing inventory in our Shore Local areas of Northfield, Linwood, Somers Point, e gg Harbor Township, Mays Landing, all mainland communities; Ventnor, Margate, Longport, all shore communities of atlantic County; and in Ocean City, u pper Township and in all of the surrounding Cape areas, we are still experiencing an inventory shortage. It’s slim pickings with high demand and low inventory.

Now is the time to optimize the sale price of your home. There are buyers that are ready, willing, able, qualified and waiting on the sidelines to purchase. They are ready to pay you top dollar for your home. The fact is if you want to cash in, now is definitely the time.

b e mindful, the dynamics of the real estate market are always changing specific to your own personal situation. even though the prices have increased for most properties, the good news is that the interest rates have actually decreased since this time last year, and the interest rates are now settling down even more as we enter this new year.

economic indicators for 2025 remain strong and will get reviewed each quarter when the Federal reserve meets. Today’s interest rates for 30-year fixed mortgages are still in the overall historically low category.

Plus, there are still many incentives and first-time homebuyer loan programs and down payment assistance moneys available to qualified buyers, as well as 100% financing for qualified veterans to purchase and 5.04% interest rate loans for police and firefighters.

area monthly rent prices have escalated and are in many cases higher than your monthly mortgage payment will be, so it is time to get preapproved for your mortgage before the perfect home comes up for sale on the market. you want to be ready and prepared to make that offer quickly and confidently.

Once the Super bowl has ended, the official kick-off to the spring real estate market begins.

Now that it’s February the spring real estate market is heating up and the first quarter of 2025 is strong. even though we may still get some snow on the ground, real estate is alive and well.

Now is the time to buy or sell. Now is the time to build your team to get to the finish line to achieve your real estate goals, win the game and successfully get to your closing.

Say a couple of extra prayers for our eagles to win! a s our national anthem is sung at the game, also keep in your prayers the health and safety of all of our military.

God bless america! Go eagles! Happy Super bowl Sunday, everyone!
