Bus-Car Collision Injures Four Kids By Ryan Lavis
A school bus filled with children on their way to camp hit a detour Wednesday morning after it collided with a car at the intersection of Central Avenue and Woodmere Boulevard.
Four children were transported to South Nassau Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, said Woodmere Fire Department Chief Richard Jankosky.

Frank Scaturro can’t stop running. He announced he’s staying in the race to unseat incumbent Rep. Carolyn McCarthy as the Conservative Party candidate, making this a threeway race along with GOP candidate Francis Becker. “All the while, the veneer of democracy in machine politics has masked an autocracy run for the enrichment of a tiny few at the top. To sustain the system, the nomination process has been compromised by a wall of deception and intimidation that party bosses have tried to build. When it is not only policy, but also tactics, that draw a resemblance to the Democratic Party, voters are truly denied a meaningful choice. Our troops did not make the supreme sacrifice so that party bosses could use government largesse to undermine the integrity of elections,” Scaturro said when announcing Wednesday that he’s staying in the race. In 2010, Becker outpolled Scaturro 10,361 to 7,733 and then
Frank Scaturro lost to McCarthy in the general election by 7.2 percent. During that same year, Scaturro endorsed Becker after losing the primary election. On June 26th 2012, Scaturro lost to Becker again in the GOP primary, 6,357 to 7,773. At the concurrent Conservative Party Primary, Scaturro, as a write-in candidate, had about 46 more votes than Becker did to secure the nomination of the Nassau Conservative Party by a vote of 253 to 194. Scaturro feels his past sup-

Atlantic Beach Bridge Delays What Happens at Mah-Jongg, Stays at Mah-Jongg. Only to Last One Summer By Danielle Puma Vincent Grasso, Executive Director of the Nassau County Bridge Authority, said the construction of the Atlantic Beach Bridge is an extensive project that will only inconvenience beach-goers for one summer. Vehicles may have to wait an additional 15 to 30 minutes to cross
the bridge, but the Bridge Authority’s project has its reasons for causing weekend delays. Any additional congestion of traffic is not scheduled until after the summer season. “The bridge construction is a two year project. We’ve been able to frontload the project so that all of the work would only involve the interruption of only
one summer.” On the weekends during the summer, the congestion of traffic to get over the bridge is impacted by the placement of the bridge’s express pay lane. The lane is in the center of the toll plaza and many motorists are unable to access it due to the

By Danielle Puma “Four crak!” “Two dot!” “One bam!” Six days a week and for five hours a day, one word is on the minds of a group of ladies basking in the sun’s rays at The New Plaza Beach Club in Atlantic Beach: Mah-Jongg. The game, taught by earlier generations of family and friends, creates a sisterhood between these women that lasts for years to come. Mah-Jongg is an ancient Chinese game of skill, similar to that of Gin Rummy, that was introduced to the United States in 1920. The game also involves chance and strategy. The four players shuffle and then divide 144 colorfully designed tiles between them into four walls. The object of the game is to build sets while discarding and passing the tiles amongst the group. Many games have an alternating fifth player who does not have a hand, but is the one to bet on the outcome. To win mah-jongg, a player must be the first to complete the hand, or tile sequence, sent out to members every year by the National Mah Jongg League. After a long, relaxing day at the beach club, the sun-kissed women retire for the night to their homes in the Five Towns, but mah-jongg is not put to rest. A dedicated group of women host game night at least one night during the week, rain, snow or shine. The ladies of Monday night Mah-Jongg, Alyse Levin, Roberta Jaffe, Randi Rosen, Ronni Seidenberg, and Bonni Berman, have all been playing together for years.
The Five Towns ladies of Monday night MahJongg begin the game by shuffling the colorfully designed tiles around. Photo by Danielle Puma “We have all been through everything together. Babies, divorces, bar mitzvahs, graduations, colleges, marriages. Our group is very loyal. There is no infiltration into this group,” Jaffe said. Nestled around the black mah-jongg table, the women snack on fresh fruit, nuts, cheese and crackers while talking about new events in their lives. “We talk about where you should get your hair done, get your nails done. This and that, everything,” Levin said. “I can’t believe we are all still friends after all

Bus-Car Collision Injures Four Kids One of the child’s parents, Ari Friedman, of Woodmere, said he got a call at home that his 6-yearold daughter, Devorah, was involved in an accident. While she escaped unscathed, that didn’t stop him from worrying. “It’s always scary if your child is in an accident,” he said at the scene of the crash. “I just thank God that she’s okay.” Describing the crash, Devorah

The remaining 29 children – all unharmed -- were put on another school bus that continued onward to Camp Atara in Far Rockaway. Some parents were also on the scene to take their kids home for the day.
Scaturro Disses GOP, Stays in House Race good of the party, as a just apology to the voters, and for the cause of unseating Carolyn McCarthy, Mr. Becker should withdraw from this race,” Scaturro asserted. Scaturro discussed the biggest issues surrounding the 4th Congressional District and stated Becker has contributed to Nassau County’s financial crisis. “In Nassau County, residents are hit twice by the failures of government. They’re hit on the federal level by a tax code that is particularly punishing of people who here are trying to sustain a middle-class existence. But

McCarthy’s favor” and continued misrepresentation and corruption by Becker. “To support a candidate in our system, we should demand that the candidate meet a minimal standard of ethics, integrity, and respect for the law. said she felt a “really big bump.” She said that she pushed her arms forward, bracing herself against the seat for protection. Like most of the children on the bus, Devorah was not wearing a seatbelt. New York State law does not currently mandate seat belt use on school buses, according to guidelines for school bus safety listed on the New York State government website. A representative from Camp Atara would not comment on the accident, but said all the children are doing okay.

The Fund is dedicated to supporting the welfare and safety of the people of Judea and Samaria by providing emergency medical equipment and preventive security. they’re treated by federal policy as wealthy people. It’s not going to be fixed by someone who has contributed to the repeated fiscal crises that we have faced on the local level for the last 17 years,” Scaturro said. On the other end of the line, Becker explained to The Standard in June that it is important to him to cut government spending in Washington and to work to create jobs. After learning of Scaturro’s announcement to stay in the race, Becker feels his chances to unseat McCarthy this fall will not be impacted. “It’s sad and it’s unfortunate that Mr. Scaturro is continuing to feed his own ego while still running for Congress. LEGISLATIVE ROUNDUP Your Guide to How Our Elected Officials Are Voting and What They’re Voting On.
Carolyn McCarthy
U.S. Representative, New York’s 4th District Voted YES on H.R. 1905 Iran Threat Reduction and Syria Human Rights Act of 2012 which places virtually all of Iran’s energy, financial, and transportation sectors under U.S. sanction and imposes sanctions designed to prevent Iran from repatriating any proceeds from its oil sales, thus depriving Iran of 80 percent of its hard currency earnings and half of the funds to support its national budget. Passed by a vote of 421 to 6 with 3 abstentions. Voted NO on H.Res 747 On Agreeing to the Resolution to provide for expedited consideration of a bill providing for com-
prehensive tax reform; providing for consideration of the bill (H.R. 8) to extend certain tax relief provisions enacted in 2001 and 2003. Passed by a vote of 240 to 184 with 7 abstentions. Voted YES on S.679 to pass the Presidential Appointment Efficiency and Streamlining Act of 2011. Eliminates the requirement of Senate approval (advice and consent) of specified presidentially appointed positions in federal agencies and departments. Passed by a vote of 261 to 116 with 55 abstentions. Voted YES on H.R. 828 to pass the Federal Employee Tax Accountability Act of 2011. Makes any person who has a seriously delinquent tax debt ineligible for federal employment or
to continue serving as a federal employee. Defines “seriously delinquent tax debt” as an outstanding tax debt for which a notice of lien has been filed in public records. Passed by a vote of 263 to 114 with 55 abstentions. Voted NO on H.R. 3803 to pass the District of Columbia Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act. Amends the federal criminal code to prohibit any person from performing or attempting to perform an abortion within the District of Columbia except in conformity with this Act’s requirements. Requires the physician to first make a determination of the probable post-fertilization age of the unborn child, or reasonably rely upon such a determination made by another physician, by making inquiries of the pregnant woman and performing such medical examinations and tests as a reasonably prudent physician would consider necessary. Failed by a vote of 220 to 154 with 56 abstentions.

Cedarhurst Sidewalk Sale a Big Success By Raimundo Ortiz
sions was simply an option and that they could display things in good old high definition. “And then a lot of times they will pick up something here and there too that is discounted.” Finding a store owner or worker that wasn’t grinning from ear to ear or cheerfully sifting through merchandise with
a customer was hard to find. “Customer service is the most important thing in business,” said Franzraich while a customer handed her a jewelry with a defective stone. “I’ll take this home tonight and put in some new stones for you,” she said to a customer who needed it for a weekend wedding.
Another benefit of such a publicized sale is the prospect of luring brand new customers. Jennifer Jacobson of ORLY on Central Avenue, loves it when the Sidewalk Sale comes around. “We are seeing a lot of people from outside The Five Towns, people we have never seen before,” said Jacobson. “Not only are we getting new people and new customers, we are getting them past the stand out here and inside the store.” ORLY is also donating a dress to a needy bride, according to Nicole Gleitman, a wedding benefactor and founder of the Claire Kamhi Hachnossat Kallah Fund. “ORLY is so great, and always so generous,” said Gleitman. As mothers clutched their small children’s hands to keep them out of the street while simultaneously sizing up dresses with their eyes, and adults help their elderly, bargain-hunting parents navigate the busy sidewalk, one of the busiest shops is Morton’s Army and Navy store, where one of the workers, Warren Robbins, proudly boasted of the store’s buy one get two free sale. According to Robbins, business has been very good since
also stated that Becker was “reluctantly picked” as a makeshift candidate by Nassau County Republican Committee Chairman Joseph Mondello. “His lack of interest in actually winning this congressional seat is demonstrated by the fact that it has been 20 years since [Mondello] endorsed a candidate who won. He reluctantly picked Mr. Becker at the last minute after failing to persuade another elected official to run,” Scaturro said. Scaturro also claimed that the Republican Party he stands behind would remain productive on reform to bring the residents of Nassau County relief from an escalating status quo. He does not believe the Democratic Party of Carolyn McCarthy is capable of putting the people before
the government. “Nassau County, however, is defenseless against the dependency agenda as long as its residents have to spend more and more of their lives working to support the government rather than their families,” Scaturro said. “More and more of them feel forced to move out of the county altogether! Yet for the 17 years [Becker] served in the County Legislature, Fran Becker did not offer us a principled alternative to the Democratic Party.” Scaturro also charged that Becker was no better an alternative to McCarthy, who has been in Congress for 16 years. McCarthy understands how different her views are from Scaturro. “I welcome Mr. Scaturro to
the race and am sure that voters will see clear distinctions between each of our records and visions for how to make sure that Long Island enjoys the prosperity and equality that we as a nation strive for,” McCarthy said. On Monday, Scaturro went to Republican headquarters to have a meeting and instead of meeting with the Chairman, he met with Town of Hempstead Senior Councilman Anthony J. Santino. “[Santino’s] comments just reflected the continuing arrogance, the remorseless bluster that we so often hear from him. And not a shred of any sense that he wanted someone like me to have the future that we all know people have in political organizations in other parts of the coun-

edarhurst’s 24th annual Sidewalk Sale, which ran from Wednesday August 1st through Friday August 3rd, was jampacked with customers of all ages and sizes, perusing a vibrant variety of products. High-schoolers on the lookout for discounted SAT and ACT textbooks to prepare for their big entrance exams were in luck as were parents trying to find a bargain on party supplies for their young childrens’ birthdays. There was no shortage of clothes racks for men and women, shoe displays, or even refreshments for shoppers feeling hot and thirsty. The Sidewalk Sale is not only an event for shoppers though; this three-day bonanza is also a boon for Five Towns businesses. “We have all our summer stuff out here marked down,” said Brenda Flanzraich, owner of Bedazzle. “It is a great way to turn over summer merchandise going into the fall.” Maya Catania, a store manager at A.H.C. Appliances on Central Avenue in Cedarhurst, said

Photo by Raimundo Ortiz. that the Sidewalk Sale provides more than an opportunity to relieve the store of older products. “One of the things I’ve found is that we get a lot of feedback from customers who have purchased things from us in the past,” said Catania as she explained that the three-dimensional element of 3D televi-
Scaturro Disses GOP, Stays in House Race CONTINUED FROM P. A2 nouncement] was obviously not about electing Republicans or speaking by Conservative principles. Voters are smart enough to know that a vote for Scaturro is a vote for McCarthy,” Becker said. Nassau County Legislator Howard Kopel stated that Scaturro’s decision to run against both Becker and McCarthy would prove to be detrimental to Scaturro’s campaign. “It’s a Kamikaze move, really. He has no possibility of winning and [Scaturro] knows it. It’s very, very foolish. If it’s a close race,
he will be responsible for the reelection of McCarthy. I don’t understand it,” Kopel said. Becker also stated that Scaturro did not have a reasonable chance to win the race. “It’s all about ego for this young man. He’s very self-centered, He knows there’s no chance of winning,” Becker said. “I have no clue as to why he’s not joining with me in trying to unseat Carolyn McCarthy.” Although Scaturro once endorsed his Republican primary opponent, he stated that Becker’s electability is tarnished by past and current conduct. He
2011’s Sidewalk Sale. Franzraich’s business outlook since 2011 has not been as rosy. “This year has been worse for business I’d say,” said Franzraich. The lower priced items are still going but the higher priced ones are not selling as much. I really think it’s just the economy.” ORLY has experienced some lean periods in 2012 also. “The past few months have been much better, but there were some really slow days earlier in the year,” said Jacobson. “It’s been up and down but thank God now we are busy and there are plenty of people in the store.” An image of an empty shop or a barren sidewalk was hard to conjure up with all the hustling and bustling going on during the big sale. Shani Lefkowitz of Woodmere looks forward to the annual Sidewalk sale every year. “I come to every one. I just love the feeling of togetherness, with everyone smiling and everyone relaxed,” said Lefkowitz. “The prices are great, the storekeepers are amazing, and it’s such a wonderful atmosphere. It’s just what we need in this economy.”
try that do not operate under this corrupt machine dynamic,” Scaturro said. A spokesperson for Councilman Santino, in his response to Scaturro’s announcement, stated that it is unfortunate that he is choosing to remain in the race but believes Becker is the man to vote for. “Fran Becker is going to continue to stick to his own principles and own message that he’s been doing since the primaries,” the spokesperson said. The primary reason behind Scaturro’s decision to run and not endorse Becker for Congress is his desire to change the future for Nassau County residents. “We saw how 2010 played out,” Scaturro said. “2012 can’t play out that way.”

Mart,” he said. “I was surprised by the different lifestyles.” With Thursday’s upcoming jaunt expected to take them some 118 miles into Sheffield, Iowa, Neufeld said they should arrive in Chicago by Friday. “We’re on schedule.” Earlier on Wednesday, Neufeld said he and some of his bikers decided to take a break and cool down after one of their crew blew out a tire. They rested under the shade of a tree, not realizing they were on someone’s farmland.
“This farmer walked over to us with his hog, and he was really nice and friendly,” Neufeld said. As a parting gift, the stranger gave them a pound of meat, yellow and red tomatoes and eggs that were only two days old. “Everywhere you go you run into locals and learn new things. Today was the first time I met an actual famer. You never know who or what you’ll see.“

previously pledged for the organization. Now some 2,000 miles into his journey, Neufeld said he could hardly keep track of the constant change in towns, people and scenery. “We’re in Iowa right now, but I couldn’t tell you exactly where,” he said during an interview Wednesday evening. “Hold on,” he said as he asked a fellow biker. “Wellman. We’re in Wellman, Iowa right now,” he said. “It gets confusing. I can keep track of where I am week to week, but not night to night.” Neufeld and the other bikers – now down to seven after one succumbed to exhaustion – were spending the night in the auditorium of a local high school. Most nights they usually found themselves sleeping in community centers or schools, Neufeld said. “Sometimes we get a motel, but not often.” It’s during this down time when the group – all strangers prior to trip – got to know one another better. Ranging in ages from 17 to 66, they normally eat dinner together and perform maintenance on their bikes before getting a good night’s sleep to prepare for the next morning’s ride. Neufeld said he plans on reaching New York City by August 19. While helping special needs children is something Neufeld said he cares deeply about, he’s also riding to test his own limits, and to help prove that people can accomplish difficult goals despite facing obstacles. “I was obese for ten years of my life, so I hope this will inspire people to try and get healthier,” he said. “I never thought I could do this, and I’m doing it.” But this coast-to-coast caravan has met some challenges along the way. Neufeld said the most unnerving part of the trip came while riding in the rain down the steep shoulder of a pitchblack highway in Arizona.

There can be up to 40 pounds of pressure that you are pulling and releasing. Yes, you are using your body but shooting is very instinctual.” One of Chaikin’s more advanced students, Master Dominique R. Jenkins, a fourth-degree black belt in martial arts herself, and a gray belt in archery, echoed the importance Chaikin places on the mental facets of shooting. “I love the ritual of shooting,” said Jenkins. “In movies people see characters loading up arrows and it’s all about killing, killing, killing. I use it to relax. I tap into this pool of Zen.” After the students finish their laps, they participate in stretching and breathing exercises. Some of the exercises entail holding their bows and practicing kicks or, for the lowerlevel students doing the movements while pantomiming the bow in their hands. The purpose of stretching and moving with the bow in tow is to develop familiarity and oneness with the weapon. “A great basketball player does everything with the basketball, he immerses himself in it. He knows the weight of it, how it smells, and he can shoot it in the hoop sometimes without even seeing the basket,” said Chaikin. “It is the same with the bow, it helps to be more comfortable with it and then everything becomes second nature.” After this, the students are told to fetch their bows, and get

Union Onboard with Voluntary Work Furloughs CONTINUED FROM P. A1 supporting the plan as a means of avoiding future layoffs within the county. Local CSEA 830 Spokesman Ryan Mulholland said they’re supporting the program since it is technically a voluntary leave program, and not a required furlough, and that the details of the contract read that any department head may deny this program at any time should they feel that they do not have the resources to continue with their department if they lose more employees. “I don’t know how many people will come forward, but we have heard from workers who say they will take a leave to benefit someone sitting in the desk next to them so they can all keep their jobs,” Mulholland said. “I’ve also heard from people that say they absolutely cannot do it because they’re already living pay-
check to paycheck.” When asked about diminishing services, Mulholland said that certain departments are very unlikely to participate like the 911 services who have already been working at times with only one operator for the entire county. “It is tricky,” he added. Law enforcement is not included in the plan. Local CSEA 830 President Jerry Laricchiuta announced the details of the furloughs in a statement on July 27. The 5,000 employees’ options are taking one day to a maximum of 60 days off a year, with no more than 20 consecutive. The County said that this plan is effective immediately and will be available for consideration until this time next year. Nevin stated that this is another way Mangano intends to continue to reduce labor costs and protect taxpayers through savings initia-

ruption of traffic. We thought the time it would take to close down lanes in order to change signs would be better off done after the summer season.” Traffic is at its all when the bridge is opened every two hours for boaters. But while the bridge is closed, motorists are able to utilize the full service lanes and decal lanes at the Atlantic Beach Bridge. Exact change lanes were removed
from the bridge due lack of use. “We had exact change lanes that were removed for reasons that they ultimately ended up being completely underutilized and in the sense that they were exact change lanes, there was no flexibility with it. They were either exact change lanes or nothing. What we’ve done in removing those and implementing the hard decal and full service lanes is that we did offer flexibility.
We can expand or close down availability, as it’s needed.” Grasso said the Nassau County Bridge Authority has never implemented EZpass and will not be installing a lane in the near future. There is also no chance of negotiating the annual membership fee to join the trade group. “EZpass is a monopoly. They don’t need to negotiate. The only negotiation they engage
in, in regard to their fees, has to do with changes in the traffic volume. Looking back on thirty years of historical traffic data that we have here, there are no anticipated changes there.” The costs of the Atlantic Beach Bridge’s renovations came in at $8.9 million at the lowest bid. Grasso said the Bridge Authority is currently on schedule to possibly have it under budget.
tives. He added that the County will continue to implement its plans to reduce the workforce by another 200 positions, and that the County will continue to determine which departments these cuts will take place in. Nevin also mentioned briefly that the County is currently in court seeking the ability to furlough employees should this action be needed to balance the budget and avoid a property tax hike. In June, the union leaders that are now complying with the job reductions asked U.S. District Court Judge Arthur Spatt for a preliminary injunction to keep Mangano from implementing a bill that would reopen labor contracts and furlough employees. A statement issued by the CSEA in mid-July argued that in terms of contract negotiating the bill, “skews all of the power in the relationship in the county’s favor.” Judge Spatt said in June that allowing for a modification of union contracts might be unconstitutional, and his ruling is expected later this month.
Just this week, County Comptroller George Maragos announced the final audited budget results for Nassau, which is staring down a potential $45 million deficit for 2012. The 2011 budget ends with a $50.4 million deficit after an ongoing deadlock battle between Republicans and Democrats over the budget deficit from 2011 that was (and is) needed for tax rebates for the county’s residents and business owners. A fight over nonpartisan legislative redistricting added fuel to the flame, and politics have been in a stalemate mode ever since this past May. “The deficit in 2011 was avoidable and is primarily the result of NIFA and the Legislative minority failing to work with the Administration to approve $43.1 million in bonding for property tax refunds,” Comptroller Maragos said. He added in his statement that finances for the budget are resurfacing in certain aspects of the County’s government in order to aid in filling the deficit.
The gap between recurring revenues and expenses narrowed to five percent from over 10 percent in 2009, and the report also read that the borrowing for current operating expenses was eliminated, except for extraordinary termination pay. Mangano has had his hand in other projects, as well, to which he says the profits are all going to paying back the deficit. An initiative to sell off excess inventory rather than repair it, like the County-owned Orion Buses, formerly part of the Long Island Bus fleet, has proved to be a successful recovery method for taxpayers. Mangano’s office said the recent auction of 15 vehicles pushed the total proceeds from the sale of surplus county vehicles to $400,475. The buses, which were owned by the County, but used by the MTA when it ran Long Island Bus, have reached the end of their useful life. They were purchased by a handful of bidders, most of whom will use them for scrap. “When I was elected County Executive I realized that car auc-
tions had not taken place in several years and there was a surplus inventory of un-repairable vehicles wasting space throughout the County,” Mangano said. “Rather than allow these vehicles to rot, my administration has sold them for parts and raised in excess of $400,000 for taxpayers.” Mangano has also addressed the excessive claims by pharmaceutical companies to the Medicaid program, an issue that has been looming over many New Yorkers’ heads, according to the County. The funds achieved currently amounted to a $258,561 settlement with defendant Sandoz, Inc., and are now surpassing $1 million. The issue of inflated drug prices has affected Nassau and 48 other counties in New York, Mangano said. In addition to the bus and drug revenue, Mangano released a revised financial plan last week, which included multiple layoffs and cancellation of capital projects, departmental purchases and discretionary contracts as a way to close the shortfall.
talk for women is like Vegas, it does not leave mah-jongg.” “That’s why I learned how to play, so I could get out of the house one night with the girls,” Rosen said. The women agree that the game is less about winning money and more about the time they spend together. Their Monday night mah-jongg can be compared to poker night for a group of men.
“Lot’s of women play. We all love it. It’s like a sisterhood, I can’t explain it. It’s the same idea as men playing cards. It’s competition but it’s friendly,” Berman said. Every mah-jongg game has its own rules. For these women, their mothers play the game differently. “My mother’s generation will play with $5.00. We play with a little bit more. Some people play
unlimited,” said Berman. “It’s not the hardest game in the world, but there are definitely strategies.” As the sound of tiles shuffling fill the room, the women continue their talk about books, cooking, and their kids. Levin and Jaffe are the dedicated beach club mah-jongg players in the group. “At the beach club, you can get a pickup game any time. Mahjongg is like basketball or base-
ball. It’s a sport,” Jaffe said. “When we aren’t playing, we are planning when to play mahjongg,” Levin laughed. “Some of us have to work,” Seidenberg joked. One thing will remain true for this group of tightly bonded women. Whether the game is played at the Plaza or at their home on a Monday night, whatever happens at mah-jongg, stays at mah-jongg.

Scaturro as Spoiler
n Wednesday Frank Scaturro, two-time loser of GOP Congressional primaries to Francis Becker stood outside a courthouse and read a statement declaring that he will continue his quixotic quest for Carolyn McCarthy’s seat in New York’s 4th Congressional District. (See our story on Page A1). On June 26th Mr. Scaturro, in a completely fair, open and democratic election lost to Mr. Becker 6,357 to 5,175, this despite Mr. Scaturro raising and spending more money than Mr. Becker and the voters knowing Mr. Scaturro from 2010 when he also lost to Mr. Becker by 10,361 to 7,733. (Granted that some of the district’s dimensions were different in 2010). No one coerced Republican voters to vote in greater numbers for Mr. Becker. No “Republican Machine” bussed compliant Lemmings to the polls. There was no ballot-box stuffing or “hanging chads.” By a quirk of the concurrent primary for the Conservative Party line (where fewer than 500 voted across a district with about a half million people) Mr. Scaturro, as a write-in candidate, impressively amassed about 46 or so more votes than did Mr. Becker to secure the nomination of the Nassau Conservatives. Traditionally, the Conservative line has generally gone to the GOP nominee as well. Having lost the Republican primary to Mr. Becker, it was expected that Mr. Scaturro would bow-out of the race. But that is not what’s happening. Mr. Scaturro is what can only be categorized as a sore loser. He’s upset that twice he’s asked the Nassau GOP to acclaim him as their House candidate on the strength of his experience as a congressional staffer and his Mayberry-wholesome good looks and twice the party has declined in favor of Mr. Becker. Twice now Mr. Scaturro put it directly to the people and twice the people have spoken. But Mr. Scaturro this time in a fit of pique about alleged character assassination (but if his campaign had been more persuasive, anything Becker may or may not have said would have been irrelevant) and charging that Mr. Becker “is not a real candidate,” is determined to play the spoiler and punish Nassau Republicans for their temerity for not anointing him as their standard-bearer by remaining in the race and retaining his line on the ballot. Mr. Scaturro knows full-well that in what is expected to be a tight race between Ms. McCarthy and Mr. Becker (based on the 2010 results) that Becker would probably need every last vote to squeak out a victory against the incumbent. By siphoning away more conservative and Tea Party voters, Mr. Scaturro is all but guaranteeing Ms. McCarthy’s reelection, which seems patently at odds with the conservative principles Mr. Scaturro allegedly professes belief in. In taking the Ross Perot slot in this election, Mr. Scaturro will do for Ms. McCarthy what the colorful and ornery Texan did for Bill Clinton in his race for The White House. He is also taking the John Anderson spot from the 1980 race that first elected Ronald Reagan – Anderson, running as an independent took votes away from former President Jimmy Carter. Third party candidacies seldom prevail, especially when the office seeker is not an incumbent (as opposed to Connecticut’s Joe Lieberman, who ran as an independent) and its hard to imagine sufficient Democrats, liberals, loyal Republicans, Becker supporters and independents crossing over to vote for someone on the Conservative Party line. The last time that happened was in 1970 when James Buckley was elected to the U.S. Senate from New York on the Conservative line in a six-way race and that was the last time that anyone was elected to Congress from a third party since, so Mr. Scaturro would have a serious row to hoe to pull out a victory. And he knows it. This all comes down to spite and a lack of good sportsmanship. We would feel the same way if Ms. McCarthy had faced a Democratic Party primary challenge and then the loser ran against her, say, on the Liberal Party line. In the most amazing act of chutzpah, Mr. Scaturro has actually called on Mr. Becker to withdraw his candidacy. Mr. Becker now has more than his fair share of work cut out for him and the folks at Ms. McCarthy’s office must be delighted. Mr. Scaturro’s actions and statements clearly demonstrate that he is not ready for prime time and lacks the temperament and maturity for national office.
Kudos for Cutting
N
assau County Executive Ed Mangano got into the spotlight last week, even being mentioned by Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly for his plan to close Nassau’s $45-$50 million budget deficit by cutting another 200 county jobs and instituting other cost-savings measures. (We reported this on our front page last week). What made it newsworthy was that Mr. Mangano is been dogged in his insistence that he’ll not raise taxes or fees on Nassau residents which has been the time-honored method to keep fueling Big Government on Long Island since time immemorial. Despite pressure from the Democrats, the unions and NIFA, he’s held his ground on no new taxes. This has meant painful and difficult cuts to social service agencies. It has meant continuing layoffs, police precinct consolidations and downsizing all aspects of government. He’s even go so far as to sell used and derelict county vehicles for scrap to raise money and changing to more efficient light bulbs in the county lockup. Nassau got into this situation because a lot of folks in office over many decades saw the suburban taxpayer as a bottomless pit to be milked incessantly (well, you could say this for many levels of government here in New York) but the hens have come home to roost and we can no longer pay the piper for never ceasing escalations in the size and scope of the public sector. This is a reality being faced across the globe and in our backyards. Other peoples’ money only lasts just so long. Mr. Mangano has got it right – cut waste, cut fat, cut meat and cut some bone if necessary to compel government to live within its means – and in Nassau’s case we’re not talking chicken scratch here – Nassau’s budget is about $3 billion. There is no reason why a county government can’t function on that kind of money without increasing taxes and we applaud Mr. Mangano for doing everything possible to do so.
LIBERAL VOICE
AMERICAN VALUES FOR SALE? By Leonard Hoffman
I
n a relatively weak economy, one business that keeps going well is the liquor business. It seems that wealthy people like their scotch and Brandy, and those on hard times need something to see them through. This summer, backyard and yacht deck conversations will frequently turn to the election. Some percentage of voters will stick strictly to party lines. But a good many swing voters will listen to competing messages and make a decision over the next few months that will indeed impact them if one party or the other gains significant central power for the next four years. Republicans want this election to be on the state of your affairs compared to four years ago. There are two intelligent aspects to this strategy. First, the general electorate of America has increasingly been more and more amnesiac. If they accept this premise as their focal point then they might accept the statements about four years ago. The specific numbers of four years ago do not look so bad. At this time four years ago in metaphorical terms we were on an elevator at the third floor going down from six. The smaller number of voters -- those who lost their jobs and have not recovered -- are the only ones to really remember that by six months later they slammed into a basement and haven’t been able to get out. For the rest of us the general malaise is uncomfortable. It seems as though something should be doable to get things on a more comforting track. We’ve got a choice and who we are as a nation is at stake. The distilled issues of the 2012 campaign were laid out by President Obama in a speech in Cleveland in June. The President cannot be reelected on the record of the last four years but that was clear over two years ago. The sluggishness of the

world economy, devastated by the bursting financial bubble, and compounded by an ever expanding supply of worldwide labor is beyond the influence of the President’s administration. If the President had a Congress interested in America’s betterment instead of his political demise over the past three and a half years, our current state might be better but we have no way of knowing. Given these circumstances, the President must run on what the election should be about anyway. What are Obama’s and Romney’s competing views on the future? Obama will try to hinge the election on the unhinged Republican-Ryan-Romney budget proposals. The concept of balance, as in balanced budgets and balanced solutions, is replaced by Wisconsin Congressman Paul Ryan and his followers with the concept of bold. We were told the Ryan budget is a bold approach which nuns, on a bus ride around the country, are decrying as an affront to the Catholic values that Ryan claims to represent. A Jewish synonym might be Chutzpah. There is much to deconstruct about the Ryan plan to slash the social safety net while gifting more tax cuts to the richest folks in the country. Behind all this is the justification that “Socialist Obama” wants everyone to have equal outcomes. The nanny state is his goal and government programs are the vehicle. Of course it is a lie. The objectives our country evolved to and had been to give everyone equal opportunity. We were in a relatively balanced state until 1980 when Ronald Reagan introduced supply side economics and tripled our national debt, with his policies carrying into the 1992 election of Bill Clinton. By the time Clinton’s tax increases contributed to turning the deficits into surpluses, the debt had climbed to about $5 trillion. Then the Bush wars and tax cuts doubled it again to $10 trillion. President Obama came to office in February 2009 with $1.2 trillion deficits fully baked in for fiscal year ended September 2009. It was not Obama that tripled the deficit, but a combination of a massive drop in tax receipts and increased unemployment payments. Famously, an Obama aid said we needed to stimulate the economy to keep un-

BULLY PULPIT
A Scientific Religion By Rabbi Marshall Gisser
T
his week’s Torah reading, Va’Eschanan, includes Moses’ command, “Lest you forget what your eyes saw,” referring to Revelation at Sinai. “You have been shown to know” is another warning to accept this proof. Clearly, God orchestrated a provable event — mass witnesses and supernatural phenomena — and Moses recalls these provable elements as they both desire mankind to use our gifted intelligence and trust only reason and proof. Had Revelation never occurred, and instead, Moses lied to some people telling them “not to forget what they saw,” they would dismiss Moses as psychotic, as they saw nothing. Judaism would never have reached us, had Revelation never occurred. However, the unanimous transmission that reached the entire world — the Bible — testifies to Torah’s authenticity. Would anyone try to perpetrate such a grandiose lie today, that millions heard an “intelligent voice emanating from fire,” not a single person would accept such a story without corroborating mass witnesses. And 3,500 years from now, that lie will not be a world religion. It won’t even be known three hours from now. But Torah is alive 3,500 years later. It is the singular history of the Jews.
Rabbi Marshall Gisser has been a Jewish educator for over 25 years, and has taught at many local Yeshivas, including HAFTR, HANC and HALB. Over the years, he lectured many times at Hofstra University on comparative religion. Rabbi Gisser lives and works in Cedarhurst.
We understand the necessity for God’s Revelation. Without it, future generations have no proof, and God desires man to accept only proven matters. God designed man with senses, precisely so we can determine what is real, and what is not sensed. God and Moses demand we accept only matters that are provable, thereby teaching we discount unproven matters. Maimonides states this openly in his Letter to the Community of Marseilles (tinyurl.com/ccn2cyj). God’s words are true, they are sensible and proven. In contrast, Jews and Jewish organizations endorse segulas, amulets, prayers to the dead, astrology, superstitions and Rabbis as miracle workers… things not found in the Bible, Prophets or Writings, and actually prohibited throughout all three. In violation of Sinai’s message, reason and proof are not engaged when it comes to Jewish practice today. Jews plan the most intelligent business strategies, but in religious practice, the mind is absent. Not only are these trinkets and practices foolish violations, Moses says in our Torah reading this week that any addition to religious practice is prohibited (Deut. 4:2). The truth is, we have no choice but to adhere to reason. The world operates in a reasonable cause and effect fashion, as do our very minds. We cannot deny that our legs are the cause and our motion is the effect; this acceptance of cause and effect is not learned, but is natural and inextricably part of our design. Another two examples are the mental acts of “comparison” and “identification.” An infant does this innately and thereby determines the woman in front of him is not his mother, and so he cries. “Identification” is not a learned

friend of mine who travels often has a firm belief when it comes to going through security at the airport. Whatever they ask of him, he does. Though it might make no sense and may be an inconvenience, he knows that it is ultimately for his own good. The TSA agents are just doing their jobs, he reasons. If he must be frisked, so be it. There is a clear rationale for such behavior and it takes a true adult to follow through with that logic. Living in a post-9/11 world, no one takes safety for granted. It is often humorous, however, that with the great seriousness that the TSA takes its responsibilities, there are still inconsistencies regarding standards in air travel safety. And if there is anyone I have to defer to at any time, it is the Israelis. That is why I smirk each time I take off my shoes as I get on line to go through airport security for a domestic flight. No one asks you to remove your footwear before flying to Tel Aviv. According to some anecdotal evidence, Israelis actually think it is funny that Americans are asked to remove their shoes and have them scanned before boarding a flight. When we were going through security on our way to Israel, members of my Birthright group instinctively began to untie their shoes until I told them they could stop. Allowing them to keep their shoes on through security left them a little unsettled, though I reassured them it should actually let them feel safer. It is not that they take security lightly but rather they distinguish between what are real threats and what is general hysteria. Such was my feeling this morning as I went through security at LaGuardia, heading for a flight to Orlando. (By the way, here’s a friendly note: if you ever actually have to get somewhere on time, do not fly through LaGuardia. There is a reason it ranks so poorly in on-time departures. It has unabashedly won that dubious distinction.) It seems I am unable to get through the screening process without setting off some kind of alarm. I went through my mental checklist of things that have caused me problems in the past. I knew my Swiss Army knife had been packed in my luggage and I was definitely not traveling with kilos of rugelach, or anything else for that matter. I could not imagine, therefore, what the problem was when the conveyor belt stopped and my shoulder bag was set aside for further review. “What’s the problem with my bag?” I said to the agent reviewing the items as they were scanned. “That bag is yours?” she asked, and I confirmed that it was. “Your body butter,” she replied. “It is too

WANT HOPE? MAKE A CHANGE. Is Obama Really the Worst President Regarding Israel? By Michael Reagan
The other question Rasmussen asked is: “Is it still possible for just about anyone in America to work hard and get rich?” Amazingly, given the Obama administration’s relentless propaganda assault on the rich and successful, 28 percent of Americans told Rasmussen they still believe it can be done. Working hard and creating wealth by providing things or services people want or need is as American as Steve Jobs, Bruce Springsteen and Mitt Romney. Millions have done it. It’s part of the American Dream. It’s something the president should be publicly encouraging and cheering, not punishing and scolding or demeaning. Unlike Barack Obama, my father knew this. Speaking to the 1984 Republican National Convention, Ronald Reagan said that what had made America the greatest country in the world was still true: “The poet called Miss Liberty’s torch the ‘lamp beside the golden door.’ Well, that was the entrance to America, and it still is. And now you really know why we’re here tonight. “The glistening hope of that lamp is still ours. Every promise, every opportunity is still golden in this land. And through that golden door our children

change. But after almost four years he’s squeezed the hope out of most of us. A new Rasmussen poll is the latest proof that the only hope of getting out of our economic ditch is to fire the hopeless guy in the White House who keeps digging it deeper. Since early 2009 Rasmussen has been asking two questions that serve as a good barometer of what people think about both our present and our future. The first question is: “Will today’s children be better off than their parents?” The answers from late July are as depressing as the latest GDP numbers. Only 14 percent of adults told Rasmussen they expect today’s children to be better off than their parents. Meanwhile, 65 percent said they think our children will be worse off. In 2009 those numbers already were nothing to brag about -- 27 percent and 47 percent. But the trend under Obama is clear and grim. The only bright spot is that the poll numbers are so bad they can’t get much worse.

can walk into tomorrow with the knowledge that no one can be denied the promise that is America. “Her heart is full; her door is still golden, her future bright. She has arms big enough to comfort and strong enough to support, for the strength in her arms is the strength of her people. She will carry on in the ‘80s unafraid, unashamed, and unsurpassed. “In this springtime of hope, some lights seem eternal; America’s is.” My father did his best to make sure that America’s lamp of hope and promise burned brightly. He knew America’s strength was in its founding principles and its people, not its government. He knew if he kept taxes low, regulations rare and America strong, the future would be even brighter for future generations. Four years ago no one expected Barack Obama -- a community organizer with no understanding or appreciation of what it takes to succeed in the private sector -- to think or act like Ronald Reagan. But it’s too bad for the country that Mr. Obama didn’t behave more like one of his favorite rich men, John F. Kennedy. Kennedy, for all his faults, knew that the best way to assure a better future for our children was by lowering taxes, making the country strong and believing in the greatness and goodness of America. Hope and change had little to do with it.

“Hidden Gem” Needs Visible Presence To the Editor; As we all should be aware, School District 15’s Number 6 school has remained empty for several years. The Board of Education has finally seen fit to put the school on the market. The School Board should consider the needs of the community in its decision in the sale. Here in The Five Towns lies a hidden gem – the Five Towns JCC. Why is it hidden? It is hidden because it occupies a little out-of-the-way house on Grove Avenue in Cedarhurst. Due to space limitations in its present location, the JCC also conducts programs in more than 18 other spaces in and around The Five Towns. It has not had the opportunity to create a “presence” in the community because it has not been successful in the acquisition of a new property that could accommodate all of its needs and the needs of the community. Now, the perfect opportunity exists for the community to come together as one and urge the Board of Education to sell the Number 6 School to the JCC. The JCC has put a bid in to purchase the school. We need a place where the entire community can come together and join a cause to unite all of us. A fullservice JCC would provide onepoint entry where all members of our community can receive social services programs, when needed, as well as educational and recreational programs and activities. The Five Towns has a proud Jewish Community. Isn’t it time we had a building for the Jewish Community Center of which we can be proud?

Pave Franklin Place To the Editor, Kudo’s and applause to Mr. Kopel for his hard work in arranging for the repaving and “hard-topping” of Broadway [in Woodmere]. It looks great! Please Mr. Kopel, could you use those same powers of persuasion to arrange for the paving of Franklin Place in Woodmere too. If you took a look at the con-
dition of one of Woodmere’s main through streets, you will most certainly agree that repaving is sorely needed there too, especially where it meets West Broadway.
Toby Tobias Woodmere Editor’s Note – We spoke to Legislator Kopel and he informs us that responsibility for Franklin Place resides with the Town of Hempstead. He says his office has been speaking to TOH officials about this.
Critical of Lawrence School Board To the Editor, This past weekend in a publication similar to yours, there was an article about the problems Rockland County has when their school board is run by the Orthodox parents who do not have children that attend the public schools in the district that they oversee. The problems that the Lawrence public school system has had for many years are similar to the problems in Rockland County. The Lawrence school board has done everything possible to reduce the Lawrence district to be ranked only one step above the lowest school district in Nassau County. The Lawrence board has done everything possible to bring down the educational system in Lawrence. The district has made cuts in every area to save at the expense of our children; whether it is cutting classes, employees, activities, teachers, and closing schools. I am sure many other programs and projects could be added to this letter by many other public schools parents. Having brought three children through Lawrence public school system, I have only seen a constant deterioration in the quality of education my children have received. I also believe that the service the private school children have; which are funded by our district; are the main priority of the present school board. Their main theme is cut, cut, cut. Those that are in the medical field on the board know how to cut better than any
other individuals because that is what they were trained to do. I can only hope that the state will investigate the Rockland County school districts: and at the same time look into the Lawrence school district and the deterioration that I along with many other people have seen happen over the years.

he language and rhetoric in the current presidential campaign may not be the worst in the history of the USA. Read about the Civil War period and the current campaign will seem tame in comparison. On the other hand, social media, the Internet and smart phones have made the transmission of information and of course campaign rhetoric much more instantaneous and more widely disseminated. It also gives a platform for anyone to express their opinion and to influence their circle of friends and family. Reading some of the stuff people in my community write about Barack Obama, one would think that he is the worst enemy Israel ever had. The language used and the “facts” stated just don’t jibe with the truth. Some of the complaints people state about President Obama and Israel are: He has a bad relationship with Netanyahu, he visited Arab countries but not Israel, he insisted on a settlement freeze, he does not recognize Jerusalem as the capitol of Israel, he doesn’t have a cultural sympathy to Israel and of course he is anti-Semitic. It’s hard to argue with parti-
sanship and I won’t. As a supporter of Israel and an ardent Zionist I understand some of the discomfort with President Obama’s relationship with Israel. I still have not made my mind up about whom I will vote for in November and a candidates Israel policy will rank atop of things I will consider. In the process of deciding I have been able to refute in my mind some of those accusations made at the President. President Obama is one of many world leaders who have problems with Netanyahu. Bill Clinton had his issues with him as well. Let’s call it like it is, Netanyahu might be popular among Jews and Israelis but apparently he is difficult to get along with in the diplomatic arena. That’s not Obama’s fault. Obama is not the only president that has not visited Israel. Most don’t when they are in office. His outreach to the Muslim world may have seemingly required such a visit under the pretext of balance. But is it really so horrible that an American President tried to repair our relationship with the Muslim world? I don’t think so. Settlement freezes have been asked for by other administrations. The only administration that outright punished Israel on

Staci Morgan comments on The Huffington Post that: Well, I think you should be ashamed of yourself for being so fair weathered....It hurts all Mets fans to watch a team that overperformed finally come back down to earth...but I have listened to almost EVERY inning of every game in the past three weeks (and before...but I live in DC so I got to witness firsthand and then can’t stand Bob Carpenter so I have to listen to Howie [Rose] instead) and I am disgusted by Mets fans who are like “when does football season start?”...etc... I don’t envy the Yan-
kees at all...they pay for everything they get...their fans don’t know what it’s like to LOVE a team even though it’s hard...it’s never been hard for them. I Also on The Huffington Post, a blogger with the handle 3fingerbrown asserts that: The Wilpons are running the Mets as a small-market team in the ultimate big-market city. It just doesn’t work. You can’t operate on the cheap in NY, no matter what your business -- but especially if you’re in the same business as a leviathan like the Yankees. The Mets will be lousy for a long time unless the Wilpons sell. The franchise needs a
settlements was that of George H.W. Bush who pulled loan guarantees over settlements. His Secretary of State James Baker is famously quoted as saying, “screw the Jews, they don’t vote for us anyway.” Every presidential candidate since the liberation in 1967 makes the requisite statement that Jerusalem is the capital of Israel. None has moved the embassy from Tel Aviv and all presidents have to deal diplomatically around the issue. President Obama’s lack of cultural affinity to Israel is not exclusive. His relations with our other greatest ally, Great Britain, are famously chilly as well. Obama does not do warm and cuddly. That may be a minus against him overall but it is not exclusively an Israel related issue. Except for the idiot fringe – no one can in good conscience call the president an Anti-Semite. No he is not a Muslim, closeted or otherwise and yes he was born in United States. Repeating these mantras do not make them true. Finally, I am in agreement that Republican nominee Mitt Romney will be more simpatico to Israel I’m just not sure that’s necessarily a good thing. My best friends are the ones who keep me in line and tell me when they think I should act differently. huge infusion of cash the owners just don’t have. The lack of talent is so acute that the Mets don’t have a viable long-term outfielder in the entire organization: Bay, Torres, Hairston are all just passing through, Valdespin and Duda are natural infielders playing out of position, and there’s no Harper or Marte in the minors waiting their turn. It’s shocking to think that a big-league franchise doesn’t have one outfielder who can be called a reasonably good everyday player for next year. Even the Pirates in the darkest

What’s New in Water Warfare? The Must-Have Arsenal for Aqueous Combat
By Danielle Puma, Raimundo Ortiz and Ryan Lavis
A
s we’re heading into the hot, dry dog days of August, kids looking for Grey Gardens ways to cool down during the last weeks of their vacation can always turn to their toy water guns for some relief. For parents looking to score their child the latest in water-fare weaponry, stores across The Five Towns offer a wide selection of super soakers and blasters that will leave them drenched in fun. And with water guns flying off the shelves across The Five Towns, parents should act quickly unless they want to send their kids high, dry and unarmed into the wet and wild August battlefield.
Toys ‘R’ Us While the Toys ‘R’ Us in Valley Stream is currently sold out of water guns, parents and their children can choose from a wide selection of advanced H2O-blaster technology on the company’s website. But just keep in mind – these aren’t your grandparents’ water pistols. The ‘Xploderz Xground Pounder 2500 Blaster’ offers a new take on the traditional water gun. It uses “H2Grow” technology – little liquid pellets that explode on impact – that allows its user to refill ammo for an unlimited battle experience. It costs $40 on the Toys ‘R’ Us website, and promises your child will “outblast and outlast the competition.” There are also varying models, including a pump action version, and ones with flip-up sights and shoulder mounts for maximum effectiveness. For those on a tighter budget this summer, the ‘Sizzlin’ Cool Aquapower – Double XR60 Water Shooter’ should do the trick. At a reasonable price of $11.99, these mini-blasters are air-pressure powered and hold up to 38oz. of water, with a range of up to 23 feet. Toys ‘R’ Us also offers a selection for kids who want to wage their battle onto the pool front. The ‘Sizzlin’ Cool Eliminator Water Toy’ is only $3.99 and lets you use pool water as ammo. And for

those who really want to crush their aquatic enemies this summer, the ‘Banzai Battle Blast Sting Ray’ is a water gun mounted pool float that costs $13.99. The blaster siphons water from the pool for unlimited ammo, as kids duke it out to see who can stay afloat the longest. Toys ‘R’ Us is located at 300 W. Sunrise Hwy in Valley Stream. (516) 791-1270. Sakoff’s Personalized Gifts and Toys For those looking for more conservative brands of water guns, Sakoff’s offers the Turbo Spy Soaker. While this soaker is small in size, it still packs a wallop. Master Rosenbaum and Master Dominique even fire from one knee and practice unleashing multiple shots while walking towards and away from the target. Regardless of skill, Chaikin quietly corrects small mistakes his students make and encourages them to challenge themselves and attempt more difficult positions. He also drums up friendly competition, having groups of students try to unload multiple shots in short periods of time, and granting bonuses for accuracy.
When class is over, all the students assume their original positions and salute before carefully stepping over their bows and slowly unstringing them. They salute again and class is over. “This is a very basic class, one that emphasizes breathing and the right mechanics,” said Chaikin. “The moving shots, or transferring weight look difficult but if you practice enough none of the shots are harder than the others.”

LIBERAL VOICE
American Values For Sale? CONTINUED FROM P. A6 employment below eight percent. She did not think, at the moment she spoke, that the elevator drop was only half over. Asked who is responsible for our present state, voters by about 49 – 33 blame Bush, not Obama. If that ratio holds, if Latinos remain repulsed by Romney’s policies, and if voter suppression does not gain serious traction, Obama may win reelection. At that time we can start asking again how to attain equal opportunity. To those who claim to care about it, we have become the most unequal society in the industrialized world and the opportunity to move up, in economic class terms, has become the most unattainable. To those people I
ask: “At What Age?” Equal opportunity does not begin at age 21 or 18. It begins the latest at birth. In the U.S. there is already a widening mortality rate for births of poor people. Nutritional and attention deficits by age two may not be insurmountable but by five there are. In order to rebalance our society (and reclaim our humanity) we need to accept changes. Most people are ready for changes but a handful of the richest in our country are not. The hedge fund manager feeding $350 a bottle wine to Paul Ryan, the Koch Brothers, Paul Singer, and Sheldon Adelson are among the oligarchs who are funding the Romney superpacs. These are investments in a politician, who would lower their
taxes further, deregulate polluting industries, eliminate the estate tax and privatize social security. Medicare is also on the chopping block but deserves much more attention. Obama’s election troubles stem from his non confrontational demeanor. When inaugurated he could have invoked the legacy of FDR, who saved us from both communism and fascism from within, by stirring the population to invest in itself. Instead, to attempt bipartisanship, he invoked Reagan’s legacy of working with both sides – Democrats would love to have some folks to work with. Somehow, he expected the oligarchs to pat him on the back and recognize that there are people living in the country they own.
DEAR THAT'S LIFE
Is This Bag Yours? CONTINUED FROM P. A6 big.” I heard what she said, but did not completely understand. The container of body butter which I kept in my carry-on and had with me at all times as I traveled through Germany and Israel was now the red flag in my bag as it went through security here in New York. “But I just traveled through Europe with it in my handbag and no one else had an issue,” I said, but she had already moved on. “It must be reviewed,” she replied and moved her eyes back to the screen in front of her. I waited. Under normal circumstances, my husband would be completely annoyed that I had, yet again, successfully failed completing an otherwise rudimentary exercise without causing any trouble. In this case, however, he was busy being patted down by a male TSA agent because he had been tagged. The smart-aleck that I am, I told him I was getting on that plane and had no plans to wait for him while he was being searched. Of course, that was before my bag was deemed problematic and my body butter labeled a hazardous material unfit for flight. Me and my big mouth... “Who’s bag is this?” asked
a different TSA agent wearing blue gloves, as though she was ready to truly examine my bag. “It’s mine,” I said as I watched her take the bin with my bag in it and move it to a different area. She opened the bag and pulled out the body butter. “This is the problem,” she said and asked if she could remove the cover. I told her to go ahead, offering for her to smell it is well. She looked at the contents. “This is a seven ounce container and it cannot be over 3.5 ounces,” she explained. “And while you have used some,” she continued, “ you have not used half.” “I don’t understand,” I said, slightly perplexed. “I just came back from Europe and had it in my handbag the entire time -- and this is not even a liquid.” “International flights are different,” she explained but that only confused me more. “So let me get this straight,” I said with a smile. “The Israelis had no problem with my body butter and the Germans had no problem with my body butter -- but the Americans do?” She smiled as well and offered a solution. “Leave security and go back out to the ticketing area,” she said. “Take some out -- use it or throw it out -- and then come back in with the rest of it. That should
be enough.” “I can’t just do that here?” I asked her, but she said no. “There are cameras everywhere,” she explained, hinting that we were constantly being watched and such behavior would cause further issue, for both of us. I shook my head. “Forget it,” I said, laughing at the silliness. “It’s all yours -- I hope you enjoy it.” She laughed. “Everyone thinks we get to keep this stuff,” she said, “but it all gets thrown out.” Alas, such was the fate of body butter and numerous body butters before it. Having finally finished with security, we headed toward the gate. About to board the plane, my husband asked me how much my container of body butter had cost. Clearly, if I was this annoyed, it must have been expensive. I considered his question for a moment, remembering that I had bought it with a bunch of different items and as part of a promotion. “Probably about $5 or $6,” I said. He wasn’t annoyed before, but certainly was now. “You caused all that fuss over five bucks?” he asked incredulously, rolling his eyes. “With the way you were carrying on, I figured it cost about $50.” I think he’s beginning to prefer that I fly by myself.
BULLY PULPIT
A Scientific Religion CONTINUED FROM P. A6 process, but like breathing, it’s part of our natural design. These and other processes unveil God’s plan that thought be our primary tool. So valued is intelligent thought, a wise Rabbi said that God named this human faculty after Himself, “Tzelem Elokim” – “form of God.” Of course God is not “inside” man, as Maimonides and all great leaders teach. God is not physical, and
therefore not subject to division or location, that He might have parts or place. That is heretical. “Form of God” merely refers to that faculty that can perceive or relate to “ideas,” similar to God, unlike the five senses that are limited to perceiving physical phenomena. Some think religion and science operate in separate realms of understanding. Va’Eschanan teaches otherwise: God wishes man to uses the scientific ap-
proach in his religious beliefs. The world operates through cause and effect, and the human mind does as well. God engaged both to prove The Bible as true. If we use our minds in lesser areas like wealth, which although valuable and necessary, is still temporary…we should certainly be intelligent when it comes to our religious decisions, as God teaches, which directly impacts our eternal lives.
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR days had McCutcheon to anchor their outfield. As for the ballpark: It’s got some wonderful features, but I can’t warm up to it. Why does a team founded in 1962 build a park that replicates 1912 architecture? Their home should celebrate the mid-20th-century modernist design that was so much the part of the early ‘60s. Wouldn’t it be cool to have a ballpark that evoked the city’s Mad Men-era heyday? FirstGame72 had this to say: The Mets problems run much deeper than just their overall payroll. Except for a brief time in the 1980’s under Frank Cashen, the Mets have never been able to asses talent either in their own minor league system or of players on other rosters (even Cashen beginning in 1990 did a complete reversal of fortune and made one roster blunder after another for sever-
al years straight). Increasingly for many years, even before the collapse of the last four or five seasons, the Mets have been unable to sign big time players from other teams and have them perform at nearly the same level as they did with other teams (Mr. Bay is a recent example). The Mets’ problems run so deep that it may actually take a real miracle for them to be able to dig themselves out of the hole they’ve sunk into. Arnie Braunstein posting on The Standard’s website added: You used my father’s expression describing the beginning stages of the Mets hitting. When they were so bad that you would see that several players could not hit anything, striking out too many times. Right on point with Bay. Nice guys will not only be enough you have to produce regularly that’s far
from his career on the Mets so far. Duda was one of my favorite players besides Tejada. the underdog story. His playing is over expectations. We thought he was just average. Duda at least striking out just too many times at least would get a hit one out of four or walk worst scenario. You’re right Bay should have been gone, not Duda who had 12 home runs.. Tejada as I mentioned I forgot Reyes had ever been on the team unless for the speed he gave. Dodgers having been from Brooklyn I think is why my father brought up in Brooklyn came to being an Mets fan. Oh well, the Dodgers moving elsewhere and we have the Mets to deal with. Time to make more improvements and invest for the future not to get by as we have done the last several years. Less challenging if we will have ok year.

DINING-IN
Watermelon Recipes: Beyond the Barbeque By Eileen Goltz
Special to The Standard
M
y foodie friends and I are firm believers in hostess/host gifts. Nothing huge, just flowers, a bottle of wine or some really good chocolates that are too expensive to buy for yourself but that we’re all secretly hoping hosts will open before the evening is over. A nice “something” that says thanks for inviting me over, I’m so happy to eat your food. This week however, after calling my buddies and their spouses to come over for an impromptu dinner three people showed up with watermelons. Yeah, that was my first thought too, what the heck am I going to do with three watermelons (I ended up donating two to a food pantry in case inquiring minds want to know). Still one watermelon does offer a lot of options on what to do with all that fruit. Watermelon season runs from May to September, but peak yummy time is July to late August. You should also know that a watermelon is composed of a little over 90 water and is a good source of Vitamins A and C, and lycopene (helps fight cancer). My tried and true way to pick the best melon is the thump method (stop laughing, that’s what it’s called). You thump the melon by flicking your index finger off the thumb against the melon. You should hear a deep, rich thud/thump sound. You should look for a melon whose skin is slightly dull and slightly waxy. It should yield slightly to pressure and it should also be symmetrical and feel heavy for its size. The bottom (where it sits on the ground) should be slightly yellowish in color. Your whole watermelon can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 1 week but a cut watermelon should be wrapped tightly, refrigerated and used within one or two days. The watermelon isn’t just another pretty fruit in the produce section it can actually be used in pretty much the same way you do a tomato There are more than 500 varieties of watermelon available and they are generally divided into icebox and picnic categories. Icebox melons are generally five to 15 pounds (fit in an icebox, duh) and the picnics are larger, weighing more than 15 lbs. Watermelons are not just the juicy red/pink color we all know and crave. There are also sweet and wonderful white, pink, yellow and orange watermelons available both with and without

seeds. Just remember, the color and size don’t always determine the sweetness of your melon and the ones called seedless aren’t really seedless they typically contain teeny tiny, white seeds. Ok, that’s more watermelon info than you’ll probably ever want or need, on to the recipes.
WATERMELON FETA SALAD • 8 cups shredded romaine and red leaf lettuce • 4 cups watermelon, seeded and cut into bite sized pieces • 1 thinly sliced red onion • 2 tablespoons olive oil • 1/2 cup crumbled feta cheese • 1 1/2 teaspoon black pepper • 1 teaspoon kosher salt In large salad bowl combine the lettuce, watermelon, onion,
on (cut to match the size of the cheese slices) • 1 cup fresh basil leaves In a large skillet saute the onion in the olive oil. After about 3 or 4 minutes, add the wine and sugar. Continue cooking, stirring until the onions start to turn golden then reduce the heat to a simmer cover and let cook and simmer until most of the liquid has evaporated. Add the balsamic vinegar, cook for 2 minutes then remove the mixture from the heat, let cool to room temperature. You will need 8 salad plates with 3 pieces of watermelon and 2 pieces of cheese for each salad. Starting with a piece of watermelon alternate a slice of cheese and watermelon in a stack. Spoon a heaping tablespoon of the onion mixture over watermelon stack. Decorate
