Burglary, Robbery and Shoplifting Arrests; Busy Week for NCPD By Raimundo Ortiz The NCPD had a busy week in our area, nabbing several criminals on charges ranging from burglary, robbery, grand larceny, menacing, and shoplifting. In addition to all the mischief, authorities had to deal with a fatal motorcycle accident and a harrowing rescue of six men who were thrown into the ocean from their capsized boat a few miles off Atlantic Beach.

Rodriguez struck her in the face with the laptop then fled the scene on Lawrence Avenue. Fourth Precinct officers found Rodriguez in a nearby backyard and arrested him. Easy Shopping for Etrogs As Sukkot Holiday Looms By Raimundo Ortiz Sukkot is coming fast, and if you haven’t gotten your etrog or lulavs there are some places along Central Avenue to bail you out with some quality Sukkot supplies. Sukkot, or The Feast of Tabernacles, is a holiday following Yom Kippur that is much more celebratory in nature, and involves massive feasting inside sukkahs, or temporary structures built with wood or fabric with tops made out of bamboo. The insides of these sukkahs are decorated with hanging ornaments. These booths symbolize the journey out of Egypt and Moses’ command to his followers that they live in booths. Sukkot is an eight-day holiday, and on the first two days and last two days work is patently forbidden. Throughout the week, meals are to be eaten inside the sukkahs and some Orthodox Jews sleep in them as well, although this does not apply in the case of inclement weather.
Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano announced Monday that a new study is in progress that will work to improve new methods of discharging treated wastewater from the Bay Park Sewage Treatment Plant. CH2M Hill, an environmental service firm, will conduct the study. Mike Martino, a spokesper-

son for the Nassau County Department of Public Works, said the study began in July and will last for 12 months. “The study is an evaluation of alternatives, comparing their associated environmental benefits as well as cost, to either upgrade the Bay Park Plant’s treatment processes or construct an ocean outfall, to meet
The Cedarhurst post office may be shutting down, according to a letter sent to Cedarhurst Mayor Andrew Parise by the postal workers union. Connie Chirichello, a spokeswoman for the USPS did not confirm the closure but did say that the post office was under review. A Congressional Research Service report in January says that the USPS lost $24.5 billion from 2007-2011. A major cause of the Cedarhurst post office’s potential closing is a steep decline in usage. The USPS plans to transfer the Cedarhurst letter carriers to the Woodmere post office on Franklin Avenue, while stamps and packaging material would still be sold until the building was purchased.

Big Hewlett Homecoming Parade Set for Saturday By Raimundo Ortiz Mother Nature’s whims gave Hewlett High School’s homecoming the cold shoulder last year, in the form of a strange and unexpected October snowstorm. This year Hewlett student council President Corey Stern, is allowing for no flaky interference. The parade will take place this Saturday, and lead into Hewlett’s football game against Conference III powerhouse Plainedge. According to Stern, the theme of this parade is “The Supernatural.” “Freshmen are monsters, Sophomores are space creatures, Juniors are fantasy characters, and Seniors are superheroes,” said Stern.

Town Clerk Bonilla Arrested Over Sexual Harassment and Possible Blackmail Charges CONTINUED FROM P. A1 get compromising photos of the female employee. According to the criminal complaint, Desidoro was told that he would be promoted to full-time employment if he complied, but would be transferred out of the clerk’s office if he did not. Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray and others have urged Bonilla to resign after learning of the allegations set forth against him. This includes two other women that have come forth and accused him of sexual harassment, “The alleged conduct of the Town Clerk is disgusting and offensive. Officials have a responsibility to uphold the public’s trust. These credible allegations are a violation of that trust and I am calling upon him to immediately resign his position, “ said Murray. Democrat Steven Anchin ran against Bonilla in the 2011 elections and got nearly 40 percent of the votes. He said if he does resign from his position, he would be honored to be appointed as Town Clerk. “I’m saddened by the situation and I do believe that every-
one in America is innocent until proven guilty and [Bonilla] has a right to a trial. My own feeling is that I think the Town has done the right thing by bringing the allegations to the attention of the District Attorney. I trust this will proceed along the way it should -- this is the way the system works. I think the public is entitled to have their elected officials do the best job possible in an ethical way. Maybe in a gesture of governmental transparency, the Town Board and supervisor will decide to go with the election’s runner up when they are looking, if the situation does arise, to appoint a replacement,” said Anchin. Democratic Legislator David Denenberg said he has known Bonilla for a number of years and will not be quick to make a judgment in regard to the allegations. “Not being a town official, I have no knowledge of these complaints aside from what I’ve read. Mark and I live in the same area and often attend the same functions so I’ve gotten to know him and his family. I certainly feel for his family and what has to be a very trying time for
them. The American justice system presumes that everyone is innocent until proven guilty. The complainants and Mr. Bonilla are entitled to their day in court and I’ll wait until then to make any conclusions, “ said Denenberg. Hewlett resident Lauren Britto said the allegations set forth against Bonilla should be taken seriously, but there is no reason he should be forced to resign this abruptly. “He has been serving the Town of Hempstead for nearly 10 years and there is a reason for that. We all have to wait and see what happens before we judge so quickly. It seems like everyone is jumping on him and saying, we do not know for sure if these allegations are true or not, but we want to get rid of you so resign. Isn’t it innocent until proven guilty?” said Britto. Bonilla has been serving the Town for the past nine years and said he has no intention of resigning. He has pled not guilty to charges of official misconduct, attempted coercion and petty larceny. He is due in court on October 26.
and 15, were approached by an unknown black male on Wanser Avenue who showed a handgun and demanded property from the two victims. The suspect stole two cellphones and an undisclosed amount of money before fleeing on Wanser Avenue. According to detectives, the suspect is described as a young black male, about 20 years old, standing at approximately six feet and one inch tall. He was wearing a blue denim jacket and red baseball cap. Any information about this crime can contact the Nassau County Crime Stoppers anonymously at (800) 244-TIPS. Anthony A. Leazer Jr., 22, of 47 Carolina Avenue in Hempstead was arrested Wednesday, and has been charged with one count of first degree robbery, two counts of second degree robbery, second degree menacing, and third degree menacing. According to the Nassau County Police Department Leazer was arrested for knocking on the door of a Holiday Inn Express hotel room a 1 Sunrise Highway in Lynbrook on May 3rd displaying a handgun to the female victim and forcibly entering her home. He forced her to the floor and demanded cash then fled the scene. Leazer was also charged with two similar crimes.
On May 7th, Leazer allegedly entered the room of a 20-yearold female at the Red Roof Inn at 699 Dibble Drive in Westbury, ordered her to lie on the floor and demanded money. After Leazer left the room, the victim locked her door. Leazer then attempted to come back into the room causing the victim to jump from a window and suffer serious injuries. On May 14th, Leazer knocked on the door of a 28-year-old female staying at the Best Western Hotel at 5080 Sunrise Highway in Massapequa. When she opened her door, Leazer flashed a black handgun and pushed her inside. A male next door hear noise and left his room, causing Leazer to flee the scene.
Misdemeanors: Naheem A. Bryan, 32, of Mount Vernon was arrested for shoplifting at Burlington Coat Factory on 345 Rockaway Turnpike in North Lawrence. Annmarie Giordano, 51, of Baldwin was arrested for shoplifting at Loehmann’s on 1296 Broadway in Hewlett. Shakeem S. Baker, 20, of Far Rockaway, was arrested for shoplifting at Marshall’s on 345 Rockaway Turnpike in North Lawrence.
Other events: On Saturday, September 22nd at 10:50 a.m. about three miles
off the shore of Atlantic Beach, six male victims, 56,54,49,48,10, and 8 were tossed off of a 21foot Cobia Fish Tracker that capsized in rough waters. Nearby fishermen saw the event happen and were able to get five of the six victims out of the water and contact authorities. Nassau County Police Department Marine and Air Units, the New York Police Department Air Bureau, and the Bay Constables jointly responded to the incident. Two NYPD Air Unit divers were able to remove the sixth victim, the 49-year-old, who was unconscious and trapped underneath the boat. He was airlifted to an area hospital in Staten Island. He is in critical condition while the other five victims were evaluated and released. On Friday, September 21st a fatal motorcycle accident happened on Rockaway Turnpike in Meadowmere at 8:00 p.m. A male victim riding a 2007 Suzuki motorcycle and traveling southbound hit the rear of a 2003 Chrysler Town & Country minivan being driven by a 72-year-old, who was making a left-hand turn toward Rugby Road. After hitting the Chrysler, the rider of the Suzuki was ejected from the motorcycle and suffered severe head trauma. A brake check was administered to the Chrysler and released to the owner. The motorcycle was impounded for safety checks.

Sewer Waste Study Launched by County CONTINUED FROM P. A1 anticipated stricter State Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (SPDES) permit limits,” said Martino. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation issued a compliance order after treated solids were spilled into the Reynolds Channel in October 2010. As a result of the violation, the study is being funded by Nassau County Capital Improvement Funds and 55 percent of the costs will come from a reimbursement grant from the Environmental Protection Agency. The EPA grant will provide up to $275,500 of the project costs. Treated discharge is currently being released into Reynolds Channel located on the north shore of Long Beach and south
of the Bay Park Sewage Treatment Plant. The study will determine if constructing an outfall pipe that extends into the Atlantic Ocean is feasible. “An outfall pipe is a feasible and costly alternative that has been supported by environmental groups since it would divert discharge of treated effluent from Reynolds Channel into the Atlantic Ocean,” said Martino. Legislator Denise Ford, who represents Long Beach and other communities, said she looks forward to hearing the results of the study. “The potential of having a viable solution to treat and minimize effluent in Reynolds Channel would be a major environmental victory for the residents of Long Beach and Nassau County,” said Ford.

Easy Shopping for Etrogs As Sukkot Holiday Looms long. Sukkah Depot also carries cases with plastic rods in them for customers to store their lulav. “It keeps it nice and straight so the lulav doesn’t bend. It’s great for storing it or carrying it from place to place,” said Farbmin. Two smaller operations on Central Avenue are a small stand run by 21-year-old Jackii Ginsparg outside of Suit Central and Esrog Garage at 488 Central Avenue, directly next to Sushi Metsuyan. These two spots do not have the bells and whistles attached like Sukkah Depot, but they are good places to find a wide selection of etrogs and quality lulavs. Ginsparg separated his etrogs by quality and
CONTINUED FROM P. A1 An excellent place to go for all Sukkot needs is the Sukkah Depot at 445 Central Avenue in Cedarhurst. In addition to a small shop chock full of hanging ornaments, floral arrangements, faux fruit and anything else necessary for a gorgeous sukkah, they offer a plethora of etrogs (citron fruits) and lulavs (palm fronds), both of which are used in religious observance in synagogue). “We start from $25 dollars and go all the way up to $100,” said Adir Farbmin, a worker at Sukkah Depot. “All of them are 100 percent kosher and they all come straight from Israel.” At Sukkah Depot, with any purchase of an etrog, customers receive a free pair of hadassim, one of the Four Species of plants mentioned in the Torah. Sukkah Depot also offers different lulavs--$10 for lulavs from Israel, $15 for lulavs from Spain, and $20 for California lulavs. All of the lulavs are about three feet
price. They ranged from basic etrogs for $35, to “middle-class ones that run for $50, to “the big daddy etrogs” that cost $75. He picked one up in the upper-class group and admired it. “Look at this. Symmetrically, this is a beauty.” Esrog Garage had a look and feel similar to Ginsparg’s pop-up shop, but on a larger scale. They had long tables set up along two walls along with a small table out front, covered in a bright yellow cloth that accentuated the yellow and green etrogs. Their selection ranged from $35$125. Ginsparg said that the prices are based on their appearance. “It’s all aesthetic. It’s a special custom and people try and get the nicest one possible for the holiday,” said Ginsparg. “Everyone wants to show their shiny etrog.”
He also said that the festivities have grown to include many more groups within Hewlett High School. Every club and team is creating their own banner and marching in the parade. Those who attend should prepare to have their ears serenaded by a performance by the Hewlett marching band. The cheerleaders will perform as well, and the dance team and step squad will kick the homecoming party into high gear. Stern encourages the entire Hewlett-Woodmere community to come out in full force and give throaty support to all the Bulldogs, not just the ones in pads and helmets looking to
improve their record to 4-0. The aforementioned banners have replaced floats in an effort to garner better participation. This was one of the proposed changes to the parade before the sky rendered Hewlett little more than a snow receptacle. “Our goal was to make these changes first last year, and then build upon those adjustments this year by inviting more community groups and organizations to join us. Unfortunately, the parade was snowed out last year during the Halloween snowstorm, so we were never able to implement the original changes, and our plans were put off a year.” Stern said that he expects the banners to make this
year’s homecoming unforgettable. “We are encouraging everyone in the Hewlett-Woodmere community to come watch the excitement, and we hope that they will be motivated to take part in an even bigger and better parade next year.” Stern didn’t plan this whole show solo, and extended a big thank you to his entire executive board consisting of Vice Presidents Casey Last and Alexa Strauss, Treasurer Kasey Wien, and Secretary Ari Mor, and “incredible advisors,” Mrs. Rose Panarelli and Mr. Andrew DiBernardo. The parade will begin at 12:00, and travel from Hewlett Elementary School (1570 Broadway) down Broadway to Hewlett High School. The football game will be take place at Hewlett High School at 1:30 against the Plainedge Red Devils.

LHS Plucks Golden Eagles in Televised Thriller By Raimundo Ortiz
to rack up more points before the half ended, but a holding call kept that from happening. “I was upset about the two turnovers in the first half. That’s not like us,” said Martillotti. “We also had a holding penalty at the end of the first half that prevented us from scoring. I felt like we should have come away with three more scores in the first half.
G
olden Tornadoes touched down at Bethpage High School Saturday night, as Lawrence quarterback Joey Capobianco created a whirlwind through the air for MSG Varsity’s cameras in a 34-13 smack down of the Bethpage Golden Eagles. The party started midway through the first quarter when Capobianco unloaded a 26-yard pass down the middle of the field to wide open sophomore Simon Jones, primarily known for delivering hits as a middle linebacker. His hands were soft and he displayed good speed as he cruised untouched into the end zone. On their second drive, Capobianco threw an uncharacteristic interception, which head coach Joe Martillotti was not pleased about. “That’s not something we do very often here.” Lawrence’s defense held and on the first possession of the second quarter Capobianco found his favorite target, Eddie Robinson, in the end zone for a tenyard score. After the play, Capobianco was hit with a 15-yard taunting penalty that would be enforced on the ensuing kickoff. Kicking from further back, the Golden Tornadoes surprised Bethpage with an onside kick they recovered. “We had turned the ball over so we lost a possession and there was a penalty on the score before, so to me it’s a great shot to take,” said Martillotti. “It was a good opportunity to steal back a possession and we

When the ball was snapped, a confused Bethpage defense left Capobianco uncovered and Robinson unleashed a 30-yard strike into the end zone where Capobianco leapt over his defender for the score. “We made that play up,” said Martillotti. If you’re not going to cover a receiver, and they weren’t covering Joey (Capobianco) and respecting the fact that

ended for Lawrence, while Bethpage tacked on two touchdowns against the Lawrence bench late in the fourth quarter. “We didn’t really run the ball that well,” said Martillotti. We only ran the ball about 16 times all game which isn’t a lot for us.” He noted his prediction earlier in the week of mismatches in the secondary and was more than

With 8:16 to go in the first half, Bethpage caught a break when Robinson was stripped of the ball on a punt return. Unfortunately
for the Golden Eagles, however, the Lawrence defense is far different from the group that was bullied last season. Lawrence regained possession and scored on a 14-yard swing pass from Capobianco to Tyler Fredericks putting Lawrence ahead 27-0. The Golden Tornadoes had another chance
In the second half Jordan Fredericks, whose name was all over the box scores of Lawrence’s first two contests, finally got in the mix by catching a short yardage touchdown that left the Golden Tornadoes with a 34-0 lead. From that point the scoring barrage

Lawrence Playing on Real Grass Saturday vs. Valley Stream South By Raimundo Ortiz
T
he Lawrence Golden Tornadoes will take their 3-0 record into Valley Stream South High School on Saturday afternoon to take on the Falcons, but this game will be a bit different from all the others on their schedule. This will be the only time this season the Golden Tornadoes play on a real grass field. Despite the terrain change,
Lawrence head coach Joe Martillotti is confident the Lawrence train will keep chugging along. “It doesn’t change our game plan. We’re going to score and we’re going to shut them down.” Scoring has certainly not been a problem for Lawrence this year. They are averaging a gaudy 50 points per game, and have dominated on the ground and in the air. Sophomore wide receiver and running back Jordan Fredericks has led the way
with 10 total touchdowns, including two defensive scores on interception returns. Jordan’s older brother Tyler Fredericks has five touchdowns on the ground and junior quarterback Joey Capobianco has chucked nine touchdowns of his own to six different receivers. The major question heading into the season would be Lawrence’s defense, which was porous for long stretches of last year. They have gotten a spark from
sophomore middle linebacker Simon Jones, who also caught Capobianco’s first touchdown pass last week against Bethpage, and the starting unit has yet to be scored on in three games. With possible wet weather in store for Lawrence and Valley Stream South Saturday afternoon, Martillotti may need to hang his hat on that stout defense. “I’m hoping it’s not a rainy day,” said Martillotti. “Mud is the great equalizer. It slows us down
a little bit.” In the event of showers, Martillotti placed much responsibility on himself and his staff to help things go smoothly. “We’re on top of things as a coaching staff preparing to play in the rain and having the proper equipment ready such as dry balls, towels, etc. Historically, we’ve done well in rain games.” According to Martillotti, Valley Stream South brings a big offensive line into this matchup, a tough hard-hitting fullback and
good backfield speed. “They’re a balanced offense and they can throw a little bit,” said Martillotti. The Falcons two losses have come by a combined seven points in relatively low scoring games. Lawrence will be doing their best to avoid that scenario. “”We’re going to hopefully drag them into our kind of game a little bit,” said Martillotti. “If we score and make them try to keep pace with us that plays into our hands.”
Bulldogs Squash Frogs 35-7, Now 3-0, Undefeated By Rob Abruzzese
I
t didn’t take long for the Hewlett Bulldogs to find themselves in all too familiar a situation again this season. As they had the week before against North Shore, the Bulldogs found themselves down 7-0 after the first drive of the game. “I just thought, it’s the same thing all over again,” Hewlett’s quarterback Zach Richman said. “I mean it was the same exact thing. First drive of the game and we were already down 7-0. Only this time I had the confidence in our team and knew we would come back. “I just kept telling everybody, we’ll be fine. We just need to regroup and we did. We bounced back, shut them out, and we did our offensive thing.” Richman certainly did his offensive thing. He got the scoring started for Hewlett with an eight-yard touchdown run just a few drives later. Not long after that Richman found receiver Kevin Fuchs open for a 68-yard touchdown pass. That play put them up 15-7 and the Bulldogs would never look back as they went on to a 35-7 victory over the Carle Place Frogs during their first home game of the season Friday night. “It’s early in the season so we don’t want to get too crazy over wins and loses,” Hewlett’s head coach Jay Iaquinta said. “That said, our team has shown a lot. It was a tremendous win and I really liked to see them staying
Zach Richman lining up his offense during their 35-7 victory over Carle Place. Richman threw for 219 yards and three touchdowns and also ran for 26 yards and a score. together through adversity during all of these comebacks.” There certainly was plenty of adversity in this victory. With only one touchdown separating the two teams in the final minutes of the first half, Hewlett’s Weldon Irvine made a tremendous leap, tipped the ball in mid-air, and came down with an interception. Then as he was running the ball into the endzone for a sure touchdown, the referees blew the play dead. There was no foul on the play. It was an inadvertent whistle which meant that even though Hewlett would maintain posses-
sion of the ball there would be no touchdown. Irvine couldn’t believe it. “I was in shock,” Irvine said. “That’s a big point in the game and they just took it away from us. I was pretty disappointed. It would have been my first touchdown (of the season) too so I wanted to get right back out there and score another touchdown.” With the clock ticking down the final seconds of the second quarter, Hewlett’s quarterback Zach Richman knew that Irvine wanted the ball again so he suggested a play where he
knew Irvine would be open in the end zone. The play worked as the two connected for a 10yard touchdown pass that put Hewlett up over Carle Place 21-7. “After that blown call I knew he would be looking for the ball so I told coach that I wanted to run the fade to Weldon,” Richman explained. “He’s a basketball player, he’s 6-foot-4 so that’s the perfect play for him. He went up and got it.” That wasn’t the only call by the referees that would rob Irvine of a touchdown. At the start of the fourth quarter, Richman found Irvine for what looked
like a 46-yard touchdown pass. This time the flags on the field were legit and the ball was brought back. Again though, Hewlett would persevere only this time it was running back Drew Schweitzer who ran in a 10-yard touchdown that made it 35-7. Richman finished the game with three passing touchdowns and 208 yards. Irvine starred on both ends of the field with a pair of interceptions to go with a sack, 59 receiving yards, and a touchdown catch. It was the first time they have played Carle Place, who are new

to the division. Next week Hewlett will be looking for a bit of revenge against Plainedge, a team who beat them during a blizzard last year, as they look to go a perfect 4-0. “Next week is homecoming against Plainedge,” Richman said eagerly. “They’re the No. 2 seed, but we’ve already beaten the No. 3 team in Bethpage. We feel that since we played them in the snow last time and we ran the triple-option that we were at a disadvantage. We’re going to use that as our motivation next week.”

The game was a showcase for Lawrence’s dominance, as five different players found their way into the end zone. They controlled the game defensively as well, holding Bethpage scoreless until the fourth quarter when the bench players finished out the game. See full story on Page A6.

Hewlett to Face Undefeated Red Devils in Homecoming Game T By Raimundo Ortiz
wo of the three remaining undefeated teams in Conference III, the Hewlett Bulldogs and Plainedge Red Devils will lock horns at Hewlett High School on Saturday afternoon. While Plainedge is a perennial contender in Conference III, Hewlett is a newcomer to records with a zero in the loss column. Head coach Jay Iaquinta, though, is not among those shocked at Hewlett’s success. “It’s high school football,” said Iaquinta. “Some years you think you’re good and it doesn’t work out. Other times you’re not sure and everything works. So nothing surprises me one way or the other in all honesty.” While their histories differ, this season Iaquinta feels the teams mirror each other. “They’re very similar to us. The lines are a good match. We’ve got some explosive kids
who can score on any play and they’ve got a bunch of explosive guys who can score at any given moment.” Taming Plainedge’s quick strikes is the number one task for Iaquinta’s Bulldogs. Iaquinta highlighted quarterback Nick Frenger as a defensive key as well as running back Gianfranco Soriente. “Their quarterback is excellent. He’s a three-year starter and one of the leading passers in the county,” said Iaquinta. Stopping Soriente will be an equally important and difficult task. Soriente is averaging 108 yards per game on the ground and has four rushing touchdowns. “The big thing is to not let them get big plays,” said Iaquinta. “If we can keep them under control and let them get their little plays we’ll be in good shape.” Iaquinta also made sure not to lose sight of the fact that his team can light up the scoreboard with anyone, and can
do it in spectacular fashion. “We’ve scored on a ton of big plays this season and we have some kids that can really fly.” Hewlett has won two consecutive blowouts after upsetting Bethpage 34-28 on their home field under the lights in their season opener. In that game Jeremy Leguillow tore off a 74-yard touchdown run. In the same game, quarterback Zach Richman hit Kevin Duhaney with an 85-yard touchdown pass. In their first three games this season, Richman has tossed five touchdowns of over 40 yards. “I’ve got to think they want to stop our big passes,” said Iaquinta. “This is a great challenge,” said Iaquinta. “They are a well-recognized program, and they’ve been in the top ten every year since day one. We’ve had to claw our way to even be near them in the rankings. But we have done a lot of hard work and we’ll see where we’re at with these guys.”

Putting Taxpayers First
T
hey say that nothing is certain in life but death and taxes. Any homeowner on Long Island with a mortgage will tell you that a very sizeable part of one’s monthly mortgage nut is comprised of an array of taxes. While Nassau County’s percentage of one’s property taxes is relatively small, especially in relation to school taxes (which typically account for two-thirds of one’s tax bill), nevertheless the County collects all the taxes for everyone and then parcels them out to the many different recipients including the Town and different villages. Because of what has for decades been an utterly dysfunctional tax assessment system (now being corrected by the Mangano Administration) many taxpayers have been in the position of being owed refunds on their property taxes owing to being inaccurately taxed. By law, the County is obligated to refund tax overcharges and overpayments in a timely manner. For every month the County fails to refund the taxpayers’ money, the County has to pay one percent per month in interest on the unpaid sum. This works out to 12 percent a year – a hefty interest rate these days. Also for quite a lot of years, the County would borrow money from private lenders to pay these refunds. This (along with many other things) put the County in a bad financial position and in a never-ending cycle of borrowing and escalating taxation. County Executive Ed Mangano has been working assiduously to break the cycle of bad fiscal policy. He has cut taxes and fees, cut expenses, cut payroll and worked to streamline government. The Nassau County Democratic Party has not been happy about losing control of the County Legislature and the County Executive posts that they held during the eight years of the Tom Suozzi Administration. For three years now the new Republican majority in county government has been steadfast in their pledge of “no new taxes.” This has gotten the Democrats all in a lather as Mangano and the Legislature Republicans have been balancing the budget without increasing taxes. The Democrats, along with their allies in NIFA (which is mostly comprised of Democrat appointees) have been trying to force Mr. Mangano to raise taxes for purely political purposes. The latest Democrat gambit has supposedly been over legislative redistricting for the 2013 election. The Democrats for months now have been refusing to vote and approve a bill in the County Legislature to enable the County to borrow funds so as to repay property owners who are due tax refunds. A supermajority is required in the Legislature for this kind of borrowing. That the Democrats were happy to borrow for this purpose for the eight Suozzi years is beside the point for them. The Democrats have been adamant that without legislative redistricting to their liking, they plan on holding tax refunds to Nassau homeowners hostage. Even if it costs the County 12 percent a year in interest to do so. And we’re talking interest on more than $40 million here. No Democrat-friendly redistricting, no tax refunds. These are refunds from the 2010/2011 tax year and we’re almost at 2013. The Democrats think they’re holding the GOP hostage, in reality they’re holding the homeowners of Nassau County hostage. Most folks could sure use this money back what with cold weather and the holidays coming. To that end, Mr. Mangano and the Nassau GOP legislators have come up with a highly creative and effective plan to get the taxpayers their money back. Property owners who are owed refunds are in effect holders of a judgment against the County. The County by law empowers the County Attorney to settle judgments under $100,000. Most tax refunds are under $100K. Property owners will be empowered to sell their tax refunds to a factoring firm that will buy the refunds and remit the funds to homeowners right away, thereby getting the County out of the borrowing loop and saving the taxpayers a ton of interest charges. It also does an end-run around the political blackmail of the Democrat minority which incorrectly conflates redistricting issues with the rights of local homeowners. We give points to Mr. Mangano for thinking outside the box and putting the needs of taxpayers first.

Make Sure You Vote
s of press time, there are 40 days until election day. This is a national election and the fate of our country is at stake. It is estimated that only some 60 percent of Americans will bother to vote come November 6th and that is a travesty – more importantly it is the squandering of a precious gift, that of freedom. In order to vote, one needs to be registered to do so. There is still time. Here in New York you can register in person right up through Friday, October 12th or by mail it has to be postmarked by the 12th and received by the Wednesday the 17th. If you’re registered and need an absentee ballot, there is still plenty of time to do this as well. You can apply for an absentee ballot in person right up through Monday, November 5th. By mail you have until Tuesday, October 30th. Your absentee ballot has to be postmarked by November 5th and received by Monday, November 19th. Many Five Towners live part time in Florida. Many young people spend a year abroad studying. There is still a lot of time to get an absentee ballot not just for the presidential race but also for important local races for congress, state assembly, state senate and more. Don’t complain about the state of the state or of the nation if you don’t participate in the process. Contact the Board of Elections at elections.ny.gov or 1-800-367-8683.
REALITY CORNER
IS ZERO A FAIR SHARE? By Jeff Katz
M
uch has been written of late about governments’ ballooning deficits and excessive spending, as well as resulting tax policy. Conservatives tend to emphasize the dynamic relationship between tax rates and tax revenues. They note that taxing away half or more of one’s next dollar earned will often lead one to decide not to earn that next dollar. Society then suffers from reduced output, as do the tax coffers which would have been fuller, with increased income more than offsetting lower tax rates. On the other hand liberals, together with the President, emphasize the need for everyone to pay “their fair share” of the overall tax burden. Sounds right. The question becomes, then: What is one’s “fair share”? How about Zero? Almost half of American households (about 47 percent) pay no net federal income tax, based on data produced by the Internal Revenue Service. Many of these folks pay payroll taxes, but those are more like a contract with the government than like a tax, because they’re paid in order to earn Social Security payments and Medicare benefits later in life. Some may also pay property taxes on their homes, sales tax on their purchases, and state income or other taxes, depending on the state.
Jeff Katz, a Lawrence resident, was the Republican Candidate for County Legislature for the 7th District in 2005 and is an attorney and active in public affairs.
But on the biggest tax, the federal income tax, almost half pay nothing. Is that fair? What incentive is there for those only receiving federal benefits, without paying for them, to rein in the size and cost of our government in Washington? Their incentive, conversely, is to keep increasing federal spending and benefits indefinitely, with other people’s money. The only check on this may be the realization that such spending cannot continue forever (see Spain and Greece). Like a slothful son who squanders his legacy, one who takes from a pot without paying in will seldom appreciate what it takes to keep the pot full. Tax revenues are not a static source of funding, to be grabbed and spent in any way fancied, with scant attention to rainy days. We, as a nation, in order to leave a viable American economy to our children and grandchildren, have a responsibility to stop runaway deficit spending at all levels of government. A good place to begin is the implementation of policies that promote productivity and work, and not those that foster mentalities of dependency and entitlement. The latter don’t work well in the long run, as our friends across the Atlantic will readily attest. If we act in time, severe austerity plans, which many in Europe have had to deal with, are avoidable. But not if we wait much longer to implement sound spending and tax policy. Is it helpful or fair to push federal tax rates and regulation to the point that entrepreneurs would rather just stay at home? And, for that matter, does demonizing successful business folk who drive our economy really help anyone’s agenda?

A Very Special Person By Joel Moskowitz

was navigating the busy aisles of a local kosher supermarket. I reached over someone’s shopping cart to grab a bunch of leeks and apologized to her as I moved her wagon a bit askew. I was in awe of how we all managed to show patience and even some joy in the mundane chore of holiday shopping. What under normal circumstances would have been a half hour supermarket run turned into three times that, with the checkout line alone being thirty minutes. At least, I thought to myself we are all here for happy things. Holiday times evoke feelings of unity, family, joy and peace on earth. We are given a respite from our everyday lives to focus on brisket rather than work, school or bills. We worship together as a family and we share in festive meals often with friends at our tables as well. At this time of the year, when Jews celebrate the High Holidays the added dimension of reflection enhances the experience and hopefully incentivizes our own self improvement. This week I received an email from a local synagogue that I occasionally go to. One of the members is fighting an illness. In what can only be attributed to the special-ness of the person, the community has gotten together to pray and

study in the merit of his recovery. Through a friend, this individual and his family sent a message to the community asking that in continuance of this theme of doing spiritual things in honor of his speedy recovery, that the community focus on three things; unity in the community, inviting guests, especially those unaffiliated, to our homes/sukkahs and to greet all with a smile. Three simple things that we all take for granted but is unfortunately lacking in all of us. Real life does get in the way of us just reflecting on what would seem to be obvious things. Now they are being pointed out to us by someone who has every right to be focused on himself now, but isn’t; he is worried about us, the community as a whole. It is hard for me to imagine having a similar sense of altruism if God forbid I was in a similar situation. We live in complicated times, juggle multiple problems and deal with complexities both macro and micro never seen before. I am sure that I am not alone in the sleepless nights and anxiety ridden days that plague me on a regular basis. With all we have on our plates it is easy to focus on ourselves and forget about our surroundings. Sometimes it takes the selflessness of one individual who cares more about the greater good than his own illness to shock us into reality. Bad things have been happening to good people since time immemorial, but it’s always the good people who realize that the pain they are suffering can be put to good use for those around them. In the spirit of the holidays and the good will we managed to muster up in the crowded parking lots and supermarkets and in honor of one brave man whose tribulations has brought out the best

here is much preparation done for Yom Kippur, despite the fact that the holiday is foodfree. Getting in the correct mind-set to face one’s Maker on the holiest day of the year is not something to take lightly. Entering the sanctuary, with people dressed in white and the fast having just started, the mood is set as the cantor begins the traditional tunes. And while I knew this awaited me that evening, my mind continued to drift to other matters, and one in particular. Early Tuesday morning, I received a text message from a friend that piqued my interest and preoccupied my thoughts even though Yom Kippur was just hours away. “Just heard the news!” She wrote. “They’ve named a hurricane after you!” Lo and behold, she was right. I quickly googled the words “Hurricane Miriam,” and the article I found on The Huffington Post said that she, in fact, existed and was looming off the coast of Mexico. Meteorologists were keeping a close eye on it. As to be expected, I had the opposite reaction to what normal people might have said when they heard that another storm was gathering strength in the Gulf region. I was excited. While I do not wish ill on anyone and I would not want anyone to suffer injury or loss, having a hurricane with my name is, unfortunately, incredibly exciting. Ever go to a place like an amusement park where names are imprinted on various standard souvenirs like mugs, or bracelets or key chains? I always look for my name amongst the others that are available but it is never there. These personalized items never say “Miriam,” and why should they? It is a tough name and it is not all that common. Sharing a name with a hurricane, however, is like having every mug, key chain, placemat and Disney bracelet on the planet having “Miriam” written on it in bold, block letters. It is validating. It means I have a real name. Of course, as a person whose name is always butchered, however, I knew what would certainly come of Hurricane Miriam. In no time at all, she’d be called Hurricane Marion and Hurricane Maryann by those who could not pronounce her name properly. She’d hang her head in shame and frustration as weather forecasters called her every bastardization of Miriam, but not her actual name. She, too, would develop her own Starbucks name in order to avoid those awkward moments when the person taking her order asked her to spell her name or repeat

ASHINGTON -There are two positions one can take regarding the Iranian nuclear program: (a) it doesn’t matter, we can deter them, or (b) it does matter, we must stop them. In my view, the first position -- that we can contain Iran as we did the Soviet Union -- is totally wrong, a product of wishful thinking and misread history. But at least it’s internally coherent. What is incoherent is President Obama’s position. He declares the Iranian program intolerable -- “I do not have a policy of containment; I have a policy to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon” -yet stands by as Iran rapidly approaches nuclearization. A policy so incoherent, so knowingly and obviously contradictory, is a declaration of weakness and passivity. And this, as Anthony Cordesman, James Phillips and others have argued, can increase the chance of war. It creates, writes Cordesman, “the same conditions that helped trigger World War II -- years of negotiations and threats, where the threats failed to be taken seriously until war became all too real.” This has precipitated the current U.S.-Israeli crisis, sharpened by the president’s rebuff of the Israeli prime minister’s request for a meeting during his U.S. visit. Ominous new developments; no Obama response. Alarm bells going off everywhere; Obama plays deaf. The old arguments, old excuses, old pretensions have become ridiculous: Sanctions. The director of na-
tional intelligence testified to Congress at the beginning of the year that they had zero effect in slowing the nuclear program. Now the International Atomic Energy Agency reports (Aug. 30) that the Iranian nuclear program, far from slowing, is actually accelerating. Iran has doubled the number of highspeed centrifuges at Fordow, the facility outside Qom built into a mountain to make it impregnable to air attack. Last week, the IAEA reported Iranian advances in calculating the explosive power of an atomic warhead. It noted once again Iran’s refusal to allow inspection of its weapons testing facility at Parchin, and cited satellite evidence of Iranian attempts to clean up and hide what’s gone on there. The administration’s ritual response is that it has imposed the toughest sanctions ever. So what? They’re a means, not an end. And they’ve had no effect on the nuclear program. Negotiations. The latest, supposedly last-ditch round of talks in Istanbul, Baghdad, then Moscow has completely collapsed. The West even conceded to Iran the right to enrich -- shattering a decade-long consensus and six Security Council resolutions demanding its cessation. Iran’s response? Contemptuous rejection. Why not? The mullahs have strung Obama along for more than three years and still see no credible threat emanating from the one country that could disarm them. (3) Diplomatic isolation. The administration boasts that Iran is becoming increasingly isolated. Really? Just three

weeks ago, 120 nations showed up in Tehran for a meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement -against U.S. entreaties not to attend. Even the U.N. secretarygeneral attended -- after the administration implored him not to. Which shows you what American entreaties are worth today. And the farcical nature of Iran’s alleged isolation. The Obama policy is in shambles. Which is why Cordesman argues that the only way to prevent a nuclear Iran without war is to establish a credible military threat to make Iran recalculate and reconsider. That means U.S. red lines: deadlines beyond which Washington will not allow itself to be strung, as well as benchmark actions that would trigger a response, such as the further hardening of Iran’s nuclear facilities to the point of invulnerability and, therefore, irreversibility. Which made all the more shocking Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s dismissal last Sunday of the very notion of any U.S. red lines. No deadlines. No bright-line action beyond which Iran must not go. The sleeping giant continues to slumber. And to wait. As the administration likes to put it, “for Iran to live up to its international obligations.” This is beyond feckless. The Obama policy is a double game: a rhetorical commitment to stopping Iran, yet real-life actions that everyone understands will allow Iran to go nuclear. Yet at the same time that it does nothing, the administration warns Israel sternly, repeatedly, publicly, even threateningly not to strike the Iranian nuclear program. With zero prospect of his policy succeeding, Obama insists on Israeli inaction, even as Iran races to close the window of opportunity for any successful attack. Not since its birth six decades ago has Israel been so cast adrift by its closest ally.

Congressional Candidate Fran Becker: Hoping Two Years Will Make the Difference By Robert Golomb
G
etting an interview with Fran Becker, the sitting Republican Nassau County 6th District Legislator and current Republican candidate for the 4th Congressional District held by eight term Democrat incumbent Carolyn McCarthy, proved to be no small accomplishment. Becker is a very busy man nowadays – as he tries to fit his busy public legislative schedule, his private responsibilities as President of Becker and Associates Planning Services, and his very active campaign for Congress into what he told me when we finally got together to meet in his office last week is routinely a 16-hour day. It is, according to several Nassau County political insiders with whom I consulted while preparing for this interview, no secret within the walls of the Theodore Roosevelt Executive and Legislative Building that the 59 year-old Becker, an eight term incumbent himself, is viewed by his fellow Nassau County legislators and their staffs from both sides of the aisle as a tough but still likeable and a very conservative but still pragmatic lawmaker who has played a major role in, among other bills he has worked on, crafting legislation that prevents increasing taxes on small businesses and
homeowners. Also, according to what these insiders told me, it is no secret, and in fact, is part of the ordinary political conversation here in Nassau County, that the popularity of such legislation with the voters of his district, that runs North to South through six Eastern villages from Lynbrook to Oceanside, has greatly contributed to Becker’s re-election by consistently huge margins over the past seven election cycles in a Republican leaning District -- in which, past exit polls have indicated, Becker has won a majority of the vote of registered independents and has also garnered support from a sizable number of Democrats who have crossed party lines to vote for him Whether or not Becker can transfer his popularity in his 6th Legislative District to the almost three times larger Democrat leaning 4th Congressional District, which runs North to South from Mineola to Long Beach and East to West from Wantagh to Valley Stream, seems, from what I have been told, to be the most frequent question asked by the political pundits following this election. The answer to that question might or might not be found in the results of the election of 2010. While McCarthy defeated Becker in what was then his first at-

tempt to win her seat, the election turned out to be relatively close, with McCarthy besting Becker by eight points in what proved to be the tightest race in which she had ever been involved. So are Becker and his supporters themselves now optimistic since he came within a four percentage point voter swing of winning two years ago or are they still nursing their wounds over a tough loss? This was the question with which I began the interview.“ Actually I am very optimistic about our chances of winning in November, Becker answered. When I asked him to give a specific reason for this optimism, Becker then elaborated, “I believe that two years ago people still had some hope that the economy would improve…. As I have campaigned throughout the 4th District the past three months, I have spoken to hundreds of voters -- Republicans, Democrats and Independents. So many of them tell me they now no longer possess that hope…. They tell me that they or their children or their parents, or close members of their extended families have become victims of the Obama economy…. So I am convinced they are prepared to hold Congresswoman McCarthy accountable for voting in favor a mind boggling 98 percent of the time for the Obama economic policies,

GOING TOPLESS
admit it. I love going topless. I’m not referring to nude or topless beaches or nudist colonies. I’m talking about the sun in my face and the wind in my hair when my hardtop convertible is the fully retracted position. Living in New York we only get maybe, maybe six months a year when days and/or nights are nice enough to drive al fresco, which is what makes it so special. Being the persnickety guy that I am (ask anyone who knows me well) there are many various and sundry criteria for roof retraction, to wit: • It can’t be too hot. Over 85 degrees in the middle of the day is a complete non-starter. My black interior will only magnify the power of the sun and turn my vehicle into a rotisserie. There are some convertible folks who roll-up the windows and crank-up the air conditioning with the top down. I’m of the school of people who think this is ridiculous. If you want a/c, just keep the top up. On very hot days, I opt for the top down at night when temps in the 70s make it delightful. • It can’t be too cold – there are some hardy souls who imagine that they’re tooling around the Western Front in say, Belgium, circa 194445 in either an open air jeep or one of those topless enormous German army staff cars that you see in the movies with all the generals being braced by the swirl of frigid air. Again, as with the aforementioned a/c people, these are usually the same folks who go topless with the heat at full blast. I just don’t understand that whole concept. In fact, I’m unilater-
ally opposed to the deployment of windows in the upright position as a matter of course and principle when the roof is down. Windows up negate the entire point of being out in the open. Worried about your hair? This is why the good Lord invented baseball hats and rear wind breakers behind the seats (they stop the interior cabin wind swirl prevalent in convertibles of yore). • There can’t be a specter of rain. Getting the interior of your car soaked in a flash storm or even a steady downpour will take weeks of airing and baking out to get the damp and mildew out of the car. It doesn’t help the leather seats either. September is one of the most pristine months of the year for topless driving. Most of this month (until Wednesday of this week anyway) has been gloriously sunny with temps in the high 60s to low 70s with low humidity and few clouds. This is ideal driving weather (and what it’s like in Southern California for much of the year which is why there are so many ragtops out there) and I look for any and every excuse or opportunity to take a drive. Working under florescent lights and staring at a computer screen like much of modern humanity, getting some natural Vitamin D and fresh air is a must. Most car manufacturers have abandoned the classic ragtop in favor of hardtop convertibles. I’ll be the first to say that the hardtop convertible is a superior product (having owned both) because in the winter and inclement weather you have a real hardtop. It is much, much quieter with the roof up (wind noise being a big factor in cloth tops) and way easier to keep clean. It also deters van-
dalism – ragtops can be easily slashed and then very expensive to repair or replace. But the move to hardtop convertibles has significantly upped the cost of attaining the open air. Typically, hardtop convertibles are available as expensive options on luxury coupes and sports cars and this has created a sunshine gap between the affluent and the less so. Natural Vitamin D immersion while in motion has become the province of the successful. It wasn’t always thus. Back in the 50s thru the 70s you could get an affordable ragtop on your average Chevvy, Ford or Dodge. No so today. If the Occupy Wall Street people and the left wing of the Democratic Party would like to rail about the perks of the top five percent, why not take on the issue of open air driving for all? What about an extra tax on those with retractable hardtops to subsidize ragtops for Ford Fiesta owners? It is fair for the masses to be ensconced in their sunless hardtops while the affluent get rays? This is an issue that Obama and Romney ought to debate next week. In the original series of Star Trek, there was an episode called “The Cloud Minders” that initially aired on February 28, 1969 in which the elite of the planet Ardana live literally in the clouds in a city appropriately named Stratos while masses of “Troglytes” [sic.] toil away deep beneath the planet’s surface to extract the mineral “zienite” and are deprived of fresh air and sunshine. In a clear violation of The Prime Directive (not to interfere in other cultures), Captain Kirk forcibly shows the leaders of Stratos that the supposedly inferior Troglytes are being exposed to a toxic gas while

Trinity-St. John’s Episcopal Church, a parish with an unmistakeable landmark house of worship on Broadway in Hewlett, recently celebrated its 175th anniversary. “We are acknowledging the legacy given to us,â€? said Reverend Owen Thompson, Rector of the parish for the last six years. “We are looking, not only at the past, but the present and the future.â€? Trinity Church was founded on May 3rd, 1836 as Trinity Chapel, a mission of St. George’s Church in Hempstead. The chapel itself would be erected and completed a year later on May 8th when it was consecrated by the Bishop of the Diocese of New

The chapel would separate from St. George’s in 1844 and be called Trinity Church, Rockaway. In May 1878, the current church building would open its doors for the growing population of the area. ur vests, and oversized sweaters in brick reds, blacks, and jewel tones are just some of the trends that fashion-forward female Five Towners will be wearing this season. Fur seems to reign as the top trend among local stores like Lonny’s, Flirt, and Sheryl David. Contrary to popular belief, however, fur doesn’t have to be a splurge; faux-fur capelets and vests are practical, chic, and versatile. Using accessories like a waist-cinching belt or layering a sweater underneath makes it attering for nearly everyone. When it comes to showing skin, less is more, but off-the-shoulder tops and dresses with open-backs will add a touch of allure without giving too much away. Fitted cardigans have been traded in for chunky sweaters, leaving prim and proper styles in the past for a more relaxed and bohemian look. Leggings and a good pair of jeans are fundamental, but options like leather leggings and ared jeans create more interesting looks. Corduroys are an emerging trend rising in popularity, and some buyers, like at Lonny’s, swear that the impeccable ďŹ t make it a must-have.

Other must-haves include the leather Ponte pant, and a parka (which which Bonauito explains as a light jackacket with a touch of fur which iss “yummyâ€?). As for tops, the more shoulders, the better. “There are still a lot of tops that are one shoulder, cold shoulder, or a cutt out sleeve. Plus, nobody has bad ad shoulders. A golf ball rests on the green no less than ďŹ ve feet from the hole, on a barely noticeable hill which is tormenting its owner from putting it in its ďŹ nal resting place. Jimmy Margiotta, a food services business owner from Long Beach, is crouched down staring at the slight incline, using his putter for leverage. A slight frown appeared on his face before he stands up. “Jon!â€? he called out. “What do you think? Slightly uphill, right?â€? A young man donning a green pull-over vest atop a white polo and khaki shorts jogs over from where he was holding the hole’s ag marker and crouches down where Margiotta had been a moment before. He observes it and squints for a moment as the sun bakes the course. “Oh yeah,â€? says Jon Sable, his golf caddy for the day, with a quick smile and light pat to Marigotta’s back. Sable is a 22 year old graduate student at Manhattanville College and has been a golf caddy at Inwood Country Club for six years. “That’s just a

Sable explained. His stepfather, Cameron Wood, is the one of the country club’s pros on staff. “He takes me out here sometimes and gives me lessons. I’d like to be good at this some day.â€? In the world of dresses and irty casual wear, black is back, lace is in, and fur is taking over. “Start with a little fur vest, layered with a bulky sweater, and ďŹ nish it with a belt,â€? advised buyer and stylist, Maria Danca. To transition a summer piece into fall, like a long and whimsical maxi skirt, pair it with a sweater or leather jacket, Danca said. Emeralds, sapphires, and deep purples are this season’s go-to colors. The jewel tones and a touch of sequins or beads are just the right amount of glitz, according to Danca. “No matter what ďŹ gure you have, a safe dress is a beaded dress because it’s forgiving of ďŹ gure aws.â€? As far as lengths and cuts go, Danca noted that a micro-mini only really works for beaded dress, but a dress hitting right above the knee is sophisticated and classic. High necklines and open backs in dresses add air without going too over the top, Danca said. The average price of tops and dresses are $98-$398. “Buy the navy or black dress, or a beautiful silk top,â€? Danca added. “They last. Invest in classic pieces and add trend with an accessory.â€? A Very Special Person CONTINUED FROM P. A8 in what we can be as human beings I wish you all a happy and healthy year. I often use this forum to rant about issues I feel great concern for, but I feel com-
pelled to shout out about one good person who quietly makes a positive contribution to his community on a regular basis, who shows warmth and love to all he encounters, who is fighting illness bravely and while he
does, unifies a community and gives us perspective on what really is important in life. In his merit smile and say “hi” you never know how positively that simple gesture can change another’s life.
DEAR THAT'S LIFE
Hurricane Miriam. Literally. CONTINUED FROM P. A8 it, just one more time. While at the beginning it might not bother her at all, by the third or fourth time, she would roll her eyes like the rest of us do and begin to envy girls with names like Rachel, Sarah or Michelle. It is inevitable. Before long, Hurricane Miriam will answer to anything that sounds like Miriam, simply because she has heard it all. Welcome to the club, I’d say. Of course, the juxtaposition of being told that a hurricane with which you share a name is gathering speed and strength right before you stand before G-d to atone for your sins and plead for mercy is not something to be overlooked. In fact, I began to wonder if that was its own message from G-d. Was I really this destructive? Am I so transparently full of hot air? Believing there are no coincidences in life, I started to ask questions. Of all the days in the entire year for a dangerous
storm to be named “Miriam,” why did it have to be the day before Yom Kippur? I turned to my husband. “You’re not going to believe this,” I said, “but there is a hurricane named Hurricane Miriam!” “And then some,” he responded, without missing a beat. “Now you know how the rest of us feel.” Har, I thought to myself. I should have seen that one coming. What I had predicted, however, was that he was then going to come up with a slew of New York Postesque headlines that someone could run, none of which could be share in this column. Suffice it to say, he did not let me down. I spoke to a friend of mine who speaks publicly and specializes in lecturing about spirituality. I asked him what he thought about the announcement of Hurricane Miriam right before Yom Kippur. I told him I was trying not to read into it -- he suggested I didn’t. We changed the subject.
Rest assured, I took the day seriously. I prayed for myself and loved ones with all of my heart. When the fast ended, I drank some water, ate some food and then checked on the status of the storm. It seemed that while I was praying, Hurricane Miriam was downgraded to a tropical storm. Apparently, she was not nearly as forceful, strong and potentially destructive as had been originally thought. She may not even make it to Mexico, but will most likely die off at sea. I am hoping this hurricane is not a metaphor. While I am trying not to read too much into this, it is pretty hard not to. I am relieved that no harm will come from Hurricane Miriam and that she is turning out to be just a bunch of hot air. But before all of this ends and another lifetime goes by before the name is used again, would it be so wrong to have just one “I Survived Hurricane Miriam” t-shirt?

CONTINUED FROM P. A9 mining that stunts their mental capacity and makes them overly emotional. The Stratos dwellers promise to get some fresh air into the mines and Kirk gets his consignment of zienite. While non convertible drivers are hardly “Troglytes,” (many one percenters pre-
fer non-retraction and climate control as well while driving their Bentleys and spreading Grey Poupon) one needs to spring for a few extra bucks for the open air. A few somewhat affordable open-air options are the Mazda MX-5 Miata Grand Touring Edition (which I drive) and the VW Eos, the Mini Cooper and used VW “New” Beetles. Old Chrysler Sebrings are
a cost-effective option as well. Between now and Halloween whenever we’re above 60 and have clear sunshine, look for me riding around topless, grabbing as much natural light as possible before we’re all imprisoned indoors come the onset of winter. If anyone is looking for a lift with the wind in their hair, zap me an email and let me know.

Congressional Candidate Fran Becker: Hoping Two Years Will Make the Difference CONTINUED FROM P. B6 rectly from our seniors, transferring it to fund Obama Care, which, while in addition to stealing this money from our parents and grandparents, chillingly threatens the fundamental religious freedoms once thought to be protected by the Constitution by forcing religious institutions to pay for medical procedures and drugs that, based on their sacred religious teachings, they believe to be immoral”. Becker promised that if elected to Congress, one of his top priorities would be to work with his fellow Republicans and “like minded Democrats” in the House and the Senate to repeal Obama Care. But he vowed that ending Obama Care and reducing wasteful spending would just be the beginning of a broader plan to repair the economy. “ We must create a business friendly economy…. As the economic policies of Presidents Kennedy, Reagan, Clin-

ton and Bush have proven, when the government allows the private sector to be free, jobs are created, wealth providing goods and services are produced, and more revenue, which can be used today to reduce the deficit, begins to flow into the federal treasury.” Included in this broader economic plan, was, Becker added, “ ending our reliance on foreign oil that has been perpetuated by the extremist environmental policies of President Obama and Congressional Democrats like Carolyn McCarthy…. We must utilize the oil, natural gas and clean coal resources that we have in incredible abundance right here within our borders…. [By doing this] we will end our reliance on foreign oil from hostile Middle East countries, dramatically reduce the price of gas and oil for American consumers and create hundreds of thousand of high paying jobs.” Whether or not the voters of the 4th Congressional Dis-

rior who fights for England with custom pistols and a rapier. Kane decides to pillage a castle, which is infested with demons. All of Kane’s men are killed by these demons leaving him alone to face the Reaper, a spirit sent by the Devil to claim souls.
He escapes death in this encounter but renounces his violent ways in order to purify his life. This new lifestyle is tested, though, when Raiders controlled by a faceless Overlord begin ravaging England. Once again, Solomon Kane must fight. Hotel Transylvania: (PG). In this animated film Adam
trict are prepared, as Becker believes, to vote out McCarthy -- who was first elected in 1996 on a strong gun control platform three years after her husband was murdered and her son was seriously injured at the hands of a crazed gunman in a killing spree that left five other commuters dead during an evening rush hour on the Long Island Rail Road -- remains, with virtually no known polling results available to date on the race, difficult to predict. But my own prediction based on what I sensed to be a prevailing feeling in the 4th Congressional District is that McCarthy, who, has retained much of the personal popularity that has helped her win in the past, will win again if she can sufficiently distance herself from President Obama who is reported to be growing increasingly unpopular with her constituents. For Becker to win, it will be as the election heads deep into the fall, his job to see that she can’t.
Sandler is the voice of Dracula, who runs a resort for monsters and their families to have a great time. He is also the overbearing father of a young girl named Mavis, who falls for an ordinary boy who stumbled across Dracula’s hotel. When this happens, running a hotel full of monsters becomes the easy part of his life. The star-studded list of voices in Hotel Transylvania includes Kevin James, Steve Buscemi, Andy Samberg, Selena Gomez, Fran Drescher, David Spade, Molly Shannon, and Cee-Lo Green.
