The Festival of Lights Illuminates Rockaway The Festival of Lights is in full swing as those of the Jewish community have brought light across the peninsula with menorah lightings and celebrations of Hanukkah.
Covid-19 changed how some ceremonies were done over the past week, but it could not put out the flames of the spirit of the community. As Hanukkah kicked off for the first night on Thursday, December 10, Assembly District Leader Lew Simon officially lit the Beach 116th Street menorah. On Friday, December 11, Far Rockway’s menorah on Mott Avenue was lit with a small group of representatives from local organizations such as the Rockaway Development & Revitalization Corp., the Jewish Community Council of the Rockaway Peninsula, the 101st Precinct, Rockaway Youth Task Force and others. On Sunday, December 13, the community joined the
religious school students of West End Temple outside for a socially-distanced celebration that included refreshments and singing as they lit the menorah out front. The event was also live-steamed on Facebook for those who couldn’t make it. On the sixth night, Tuesday, December 15, those at Temple
Beth-el celebrated with singing and laughter during a virtual celebration that was streamed on Temple Beth-El’s website. Hanukkah officially comes to an end on Friday, December 18. Happy Hanukkah and Chag Sameach! Continued on page 4

A Blast Of Optimism You know how sometimes your kids don’t want advice but you give it to them anyway. You know how somebody talking about silver linings can have really bad timing. Sometimes you just want to wallow in the dark and don’t want to hear about looking at the bright side. Yes, I know things could always be worse but you’re making it worse by telling me that. So, to be clear, I’m not saying things could be worse. I’m fully onboard with those who don’t even see the glass, never mind if it’s half empty. So, don’t wor-

ry, I’m not here to cheer you up. Like the good pessimist said, it’s never too late to go back to bed. But if a gun was pointed at my head, I would say there are brighter days ahead… I would hope to travel. See the world, unmasked. The possibilities are endless. Well, almost endless. It’d take more than a gun to my head to stay at The Europa Hotel in Belfast. Because I’d seen everything else on Netflix, I wound up watching Aerial Ireland. The “Aerial” shows cover a country
or region by drone. Spectacular scenery is delivered with a chock-full of trivia nuggets. It’s kind of like Wild Kingdom without the animals. As we were pleasantly flying over Belfast, the capital of Northern Ireland, we come upon The Europa, a five-star hotel. The narrator says flatly, with zero astonishment, that during “the troubles” (the 30 year low level war) the place was bombed 28 times. Twenty eight. So, uhm, my first thought: people kept staying there? I think, say, after the 27th time I might’ve looked for options. I mean, how bad were the park benches? What were people thinking? Oh, after that last bomb, number 14, the place has to be safe now? They’re not going to bomb it again. Here’s your key, Mr. Boyle, and here’s your bomb squad suit. Take the elevator made with nuclear blast safe walls to the third floor. The hotel must’ve had some marketing geniuses. Second
night free (if you make it). Get bombed at happy hour. Only kidding. Molotov cocktails, with a celery stick, two for one. Check out our newly renovated rooms. Again. Just don’t stay in Room C-4. Of course, I didn’t believe what I heard so I researched it. 28 was wrong. It’s actually been bombed 33 times. Somehow, nobody ever died but I’m not sure that would’ve made a difference to me if I were looking for a holiday stay. I mean who were the guests? Other bombers? Like it was a convention. And the poor staff. Talk about combat pay. You’d be the bellhop putting your ear to suitcases waiting to hear something ticking. Or maybe you’d bring your own bomb sniffing German Shepherd to work. In news reports, the staff was always called “resilient.” I would’ve gone with “nuts,” myself. Anyway, the place is still there. Taking reservations. So, uh, that kind of makes me optimistic.

And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.
And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men. And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us. And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger. - Luke 2:8-16 kjv

Granting Christmas WISHes Rockaway WISH has done it again. On Sunday, December 13, the local nonprofit granted some Christmas wishes as they brought Santa Claus to town for their Christmas car parade. With a caravan led by FDNY’s Ladder 137, followed by decorated cars full of Buddy the Elf and friends, Whos from Whoville, Elf on the Shelf and Santa Claus himself, the group
paraded through town, passing Beach 129th to give out candy to kids, and continuing from Beach 149th to Beach 72nd Street. As many holiday celebrations have to be scaled back or canceled this season due to coronavirus, Rockaway sure knows how to get creative to continue to make spirits bright. Way to go WISH!

A MUCH NEEDED SHOT FRONT LINE WORKERS GETTING VACCINE St. John’s Hospital made the news when the first Coronavirus patient in Queens was admitted to the hospital in early March. And from there, the news only got more grim as the hospital was overrun with cases throughout the Spring. Now, the news is decidedly more upbeat as a long-awaited vaccine arrived on Monday, December 14. On Tuesday, Jerry Walsh, CEO of St. John’s and Chief Medical Officer Dr. Donald Morrish announced the arrival of the Pfizer vaccine and that it was being administered to front line workers at the hospital. Both expressed deep appreciation for the staff who’ve labored under extremely difficult challenges. The challenges were physical and emotional and the arrival of the vaccine signifies a new day, and new hope, even as cases are currently increasing.
“We’re so thankful we have the vaccine for them and that should provide some comfort,” Walsh said. Morrish said it is a voluntary program and staff can opt in or out. By late morning Tuesday, more than 175 staff members had already been vaccinated. Morrish, who has patient contact, said he himself had been vaccinated on Monday and feels “great” with no side effects. Saundra Chisholm, a Nurse Practioner at St. John’s said the plan is to have all 2,300 employees vaccinated eventually and is encouraged by the numbers coming forward so soon. Morrish said there was a “positive buzz” about the vaccine and is pleased with the reception by staff. Chisholm added that staff is following CDC guidelines and protocols Continued on page 17

what resembles an ATM machine, indicated a temperature set at -71 degrees. Heavy duty protective gloves are needed to place or remove vials in the extremely cold interior. The tour continued to a “POD” (point of distribution) which was a wing with an area set aside for people to sign consent forms, a recovery area, and a room to receive the vaccine. While there, the group came upon Dr. Saira Shahab, an Infectious Disease specialist at St. John’s, about to get her

shot. She expressed her excitement and was eager to allow others a view of the quick injection in her arm. (She’s pictured on the front page). During the peak of the pandemic, ambulances carrying COVID-19 positive patients were lined up behind the hospital’s Emergency Department’s doors, spilling into the street. And now, spilling out is a sense of relief and excitement as St. John’s Hospital becomes the first place in Rockaway to offer the long-awaited vaccine.

Drive-by Christmas Cheer Last Saturday, December 12, Santa Claus and his elves stopped by the Little North Pole to share some socially-distanced seasons greetings. Joe Mure invited the commu-
nity to come pass the brilliant holiday home located at 144-03 Neponsit Avenue, in their cars, to receive a special toy or treat from Santa Claus. Cars lined up along Neponsit Avenue as a masked-up Santa greeted kids, listened to their Christmas wishes or took their letters to Santa, while elves were hard at work giving out toys based on the kids’ ages. The drive-by was such a hit that they’ll be doing it again this Saturday, December 19. From 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., Santa and his elves will be on hand giving toys to kids again. Cars can line up starting
on Beach 145th and Neponsit Avenue. And on Monday, December 21, those from the St. Camillus Special Olympics program will have their own special drive-by starting at 6:30 p.m. The Little North Pole will continue to be lit throughout the season from 4:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays, and ‘til 10
p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Tune in to 88.7 FM to listen to the music with the home’s lightshow every half hour. The Little North Pole is collecting donations for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Donations can be made in boxes outside of the home, or at www.LittleNorthPole.org. When the Carr family decided to leave Ludwig’s behind, they reached out to the Sullivans, asking if they had any interest in filling their shoes. The Sullivans turned to their favorite established caterers in Brooklyn, A&S, and asked Paolillo if he was up to the task of bringing some of Brooklyn’s best over the bridge to Rockaway. “When the opportunity arose, it was something we couldn’t walk away from,” Paolillo said. “We have two established brands with good reputations in Brooklyn and we wanted to bring our families together to create that same standard for the community of Rockaway,” Donna Sullivan said. With two well-known names behind A&S, the business is off to a bustling start, catering local weddings, just coming off a successful Thanksgiving season and now preparing to keep families of Rockaway full this holiday season. From half to full trays and even party heroes, with cuisines ranging from Italian to American to even some Asian-inspired dishes, the options are endless at A&S At The Harbor. For Thanksgiving, the sweet sliced ham with pineapples, and the stuffing filled with five cheeses, carrots, onion, celery, bread cubes and “a couple secrets,” according to Chef Joe, were a big seller and families are going for seconds for their holiday orders. But Chef Joe also has his specialties. His chicken scampi is one of his favorites to make, and a big seller. According to him, his spinach risotto balls are “world famous.” The Eggplant A&S Rollatini including eggplant stuffed with ricotta, mozzarella, chopped spinach and topped with vodka sauce, can’t be beat. Their dumplings stuffed with chicken, pork or shrimp, make for the perfect appetizer. One hero option, the Roast Beef Luger, leaves mouths watering over roast beef, caramelized onions, melted mozzarella and Peter Luger sauce. And one of the newest additions, “Pillows of Love,” named specially for a Breezy Point
wedding they recently catered, featuring stuffed gnocchi with cacio pepe sauce, had guests asking, “Where can I get this?” The phone calls to A&S have been rolling in as people hear about their delicious offerings. As demand increases, Chef Joe and Adolfo Cuapio are hard at work in the kitchen while Sullivan handles the business side of things and her son, Austin Sullivan manages. The group serves up a family-like atmosphere that they strive to provide to their customers with stellar customer service, quality, always-fresh food and more. While the holidays have kept them busy and coronavirus has left some things up in the air, A&S has big plans for the future. Besides catering holidays and events, they plan to offer family takeout meals for those who aren’t in the mood to cook on weeknights; tasting events where people can try what they have to offer; cooking nights with wine pairings and other unique offerings. And no matter what, they’ll ensure it’s done right. “Catering is an art. You have to know how to prepare food so it’s ready when people reheat it,” Paolillo said. “It must be top quality. We hope to bring that here to Rockaway and thrive on it.” “We feel privileged to have the opportunity to serve the community and we believe we’re bringing this community a very special culinary menu that families are going to enjoy for years to come,” Sullivan said. Paolilli added, “We’re grateful to be a part of the community. We want to be members of the community and give back to it and let our family feed yours.” A&S At the Harbor is located in the BHYC at 533 Beach 126th Street. They offer pickup and delivery (except on major holidays). Christmas orders are being accepted through December 19. New Year’s orders are being accepted through December 29. Dear Editor: Coronavirus has taken many things, but it will not be the Grinch who stole Christmas this year. Thank you to the many community members who have brought light and love to the Rockaways this holiday season. Although the holiday activities couldn’t be the same this year, I appreciate those who have hosted menorah and tree lightings and those who have brought the magic of Santa to town in unique, Covid-safe ways. It’s so nice to see these events bring a smile to kids’ faces, even under a mask. And thank you to those who have brilliantly decorated their homes to bring some holiday cheer to the neighborhood. I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many homes and terraces with lights. It’s the perfect way to send a message that darkness hasn’t won this year. There will always be light. Thank you! Roberta Holly

Up In The Air
Ask the DOC
By Peter Galvin, MD
During this pandemic I have been reluctant, if not unwilling, to travel by airplane for several reasons, which means that I would have missed my family’s annual Christmas reunion in Texas this weekend (it was wisely cancelled). Let’s face it, wearing a mask, especially for a prolonged amount of time, can be annoying and uncomfortable. As I write this, the rule is masks are supposed to be worn if you cannot socially distance, particularly in an indoor setting. I considered that being in an airplane, which has recirculated air, is the definition of a lack of social distancing. Therefore, it was my belief that airline travel would put a person at higher risk for getting the virus. Then, last month, I read an article in the Journal of the American Medical Association. The authors are members of not just the AMA, but also the Aerospace Medical
Association, the International Airline Medical Association, and the International Air Transport Association. The article was an eye opener for me. The authors stated that “the risk of contracting COVID-19 during air travel is lower than from an office building, classroom, supermarket, or commuter train.” Allow me to pass on their reasoning to you. As you probably know, the virus is emitted when someone talks, coughs, sneezes, or sings, mainly in droplets that can be propelled a short distance, therefore the social distancing and mask rationale. A person can become infected if these virus particles reach their nose or mouth, either directly or via hands. The article states that air enters the airplane cabin from overhead inlets and flows downward toward floor-level outlets. Air enters and leaves the cabin at the same seat or row and there is little forward or backward air-
flow between rows, making it less likely to spread respiratory particles between rows. In addition, the seat back acts as a physical barrier. The air filtering and recycling in modern airliners is much faster than normal indoor buildings. Half of the air is from outside, and the other half is recycled through HEPA filters of the same type used in operating rooms. In addition, during flight most people tend to remain relatively still, with little face-to-face contact. According to the authors, the number of suspected or confirmed cases of in-flight COVID-19 transmission between passengers around the world is very small (42 as of 10/1/20) as compared to transmission aboard highspeed trains in China (2300 known cases for an overall rate of 0.3% among all passengers). Wearing face coverings further reduces risk, as it does in other settings where physical distancing cannot be
maintained. Of course, airlines can and have taken other steps to reduce transmission like temperature checks of passengers and crews, asking about symptoms, adjustment of food and beverage service, control of access to aisles and bathrooms to reduce contact, and contact tracing in the event that a passenger develops an infection. Passengers can take additional steps themselves like wearing a mask, not travelling if feeling unwell, and maintaining distance. Also, aim the overhead nozzle directly at your head and keep it on full, stay seated, sanitize your hands frequently, and avoid touching your face. The Season of Light When I learned about the inner “chakras” - energy centers - that spiral around the spine up through the crown of the head, the color for the heart one, “anahata,” was taught as “green with a pink center.” I love this color description as I imagine the light within each of us to originate in this pink center and emanate forward binding us all in a thread of light. This is the season of light, starting in November with the festival of lights and con-
tinuing with the season upon us. The “light” times signify the victory of light over darkness, good over evil, knowledge over ignorance, and hope over despair. It is a time of acknowledging the difficulties, not pushing them away, and allowing space for that beam of joy, peace and love to be present within and shine forth. No matter what has happened or is happening, this is exactly where we are supposed to be at this moment
in time. This may be hard to swallow, much less accept ; going this route, though, brings a sense of relief. Resisting it only brings on the stress. If this is where I am supposed to be with hardships, lack, loss, whatever, it can only get better. I spent some time thinking about this and it not only makes a lot of sense but also helps to let go of all of the stories. Why is this? How did that happen? How can I be ok? Wasting time thinking about all of it. Rather, focusing on something that is sound, secure, unshakeable - that light within. If we can sit with that in stillness, we will discover the enormous strength and security that it provides. Maybe this year is different in a good way. Maybe we are not rushing and doing and stressing like in past years. We should take that as a sign that we can make the Season of Light whatever we want it to be and not what it should be or has been in the past. And it could feel good. Let-
ting go of resistance and rigidity, imagining the shield of that going away and feeling ok. We have the power of our minds and the compassion in our hearts to make our lives not so full of burdens but more full of lightness and light. If you have trouble accessing your light within, imagine sitting in front of the sun on a hot summer evening and the rays seem to be directed right at you. I like to do this with my eyes squinted and the rays of light seem to come right in. I often say in my yoga classes when we have the sunset vision during the summer evening class: “may the rays of the sun illuminate our hearts, enlighten our minds and nourish our souls.” Let there be light, peace, joy and love. May you be happy. May you be free. May you be grateful. May you be compassionate. May you let go of things that do not serve you. May you have inner peace.

The Rockaway Times
AS THE WORLD TURNS By John Sica
Anyone who is friends with me on Facebook or Instagram knows that I am in awe of a good sunrise or sunset. Of course, I am not alone. Poems, songs, inspirational posters have all been touched by the majesty of the daily event. Anyone who has been to Key West knows about the sunset gatherings at Mallory Square, where tourists gather to cheer the end of each day. In Rincon, Puerto Rico, where many Rockaway locals spend their winters, the question is always, “where are we going for sunset?” There are many options in Rincon. Villas Coffresi, The Beach House, The Lighthouse, and Black Eagle are local favorites. I always laugh as I rush off the beach, so I can go home and shower to get out in time to watch the sunset from one of these places. I laugh because the best sunset is just to stay on the beach and go nowhere. As long as your cooler

is not empty and the battery on your portable speaker still has power. Here in Rockaway, a funny thing happens from late No-
vember to late January. You can watch the sun rise in the east and set in the west all on the same beach. With the short days and the position of the earth on its axis, it seems to rise in Far Rock and set in Breezy. Eventually though it starts to rise over the buildings of Far Rock. Then the sunset makes it way over to the Jamaica Bay side of the peninsula to give the Beach Channel Drive residents a show. A funny thing dawned on me this week. Pun intended. Monday, I woke up and some morning clouds were on the horizon. My weather app said sunrise would be at 6:58 am, but with the clouds it would not happen. However, the clouds were like a strip, only on the horizon, so fifteen minutes later a beautiful sunrise appeared, breaking over the clouds. As a matter of fact, with the clouds soaking up the colors, it was more beautiful than normal. That is when it dawned on me. There

is not just one sunrise in the morning. In fact, there is a sunrise every second of every day somewhere on the earth. Not only that, there is not only one sunset every day, there is a sunset every second of every day. Even more amazing, they are happening simultaneously. One man’s sunrise is another man’s sunset simultaneously. The sun is not actually setting, our location on earth is just rotating out of its sight. Somewhere on the other side of the earth, someone is rotating into the view of the sun. Perhaps we should change the name, sunset should be called “our location on earth is rotating out of the view of the sun.” Instead of saying, “where are we going for sunset?” We should be asking where do you want to go to observe our location on earth spinning away from our view of the sun? I must stop watching science videos on YouTube. Let’s just call them sunrise and sunset.

Whine’s Not Fine Dear Enchantress, I whine. I know it sounds like I’m joking, I’m not. My husband says I whine all the time and I argued that I didn’t. Then, all of a sudden, I started hearing myself, and focusing in on my mom who also whines all the time. I’m not even kidding when I ask you, how do I stop this bad habit? I want my husband to do things around the house that he said he will do and then does not and so I have turned in to my mom and I don’t want to be a whiny nag anymore! Thanks Dear Whining Winnie, It’s funny; I read this in a whiny voice. I say that to
be lighthearted, but I am so proud of you for admitting that you’re a whiner! I hear it a lot and when I have clients with young children, there are so many times that the mother is saying “stop whining to the child and she is whining herself, and can’t understand why her child won’t stop. So, you’re not alone, and it’s possible to change. I’m going to give you practical advice, that you can start doing ASAP. Practice on insignificant people to start. Perhaps a telemarketing person or when you’re with store- keepers, maybe you know them, maybe you don’t. Practice giv-

ing “yes or “no answers. Give them sharp, clear and short replies using one of the two words; “yes or no. Then, decide, if you want to say more. Don’t feel obligated to. Start training yourself to speak promptly and with no explanations or conversations, (you don’t have to be militant about this but make it a priority). Once you get comfortable doing this, you can start to respond to people you know in the same way. If you feel really adventurous and trusting, then ask your husband to play this game with you, let him ask you “yes and “no questions and then you practice responding. If he is not creative you may have to write
out the questions and give them to him on slips of paper. Put them in a hat and pull a question like you would a bingo ball. Do this as much as you can, you might feel like you are holding back, or you’re being mean, or you’re being cold... don’t worry about that stuff, continue until your responses and requests become quick and to the point. Example: “will you do this? “Can you do that? You’ll soon start to see the benefits of your new practice! If not, write me again. The first Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center was decorated on Christmas Eve 1931 by the Construction Workers who were building Rockefeller Center. Far Rockaway Boy Goes Super Saiyan On Cancer By Katie McFadden
This year has no doubt been a rough one. Emmanuel Velazquez, known as “EJ,” knows that more than anyone after being diagnosed with cancer on his 10th birthday in May. However, not for one moment has EJ let leukemia stop him. After all, like Goku’s power move on Dragon Ball Z, EJ has gone Super Saiyan on cancer and has been Spirit Bombing leukemia all year. EJ, of Far Rockaway, has overcome his fair share of adversity from having seizures at a young age, to being diagnosed with ADHD and even being homeless for a few years when he was three. But after the seizures subsided, his family finding a home in Far Rockaway, enrolling in a helpful school system within Martin de Porres in Elmont, and succeeding despite quarantine making school remote, EJ was hit with another blow that nobody saw coming. “One day in May he woke up and said he had a pain in his hip,” his mother, Katherine Williams recalled. “I said, ‘ok, what did you do?’ There was nothing there, no bruises, but he acted like he was in a lot of pain. He didn’t want to lay down. The next day, he could barely walk. The following day, he couldn’t get out of bed.” That day was May 15, EJ’s 10th birthday. Instead of celebrating with a Zoom party with his class, EJ and his mother spent the day bouncing from an urgent care, where it was discovered he had lumps on his neck, to his primary care doctor who took blood, and later received a phone call that no parent wants. “She called me and said he had blasts in his blood,” Williams said. The blasts indicated a sign of leukemia. Upon a referral to Cohen Children’s Medical Center, Williams and EJ hopped in a cab to New Hyde Park, where he spent his birthday, and the subsequent week, on a morphine drip to curb the pain. By 9 p.m. that night, the diagnosis came back. EJ had Pre-B Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. Williams didn’t break the cancer news to EJ right away, other than explaining that he was sick. A few days later, he had a

mediport put in to start receiving chemo treatment, and as EJ was focused on when he would get to have his Zoom birthday party, as she fought through tears, Williams finally explained to the youngest of her three children, that the party would have to wait because he had cancer. His response shocked her. “He looked at me straight in the face and said, ‘Mommy, why are you crying? Don’t worry about it. My Nino beat cancer twice. I just gotta be like Goku and Spirit Bomb cancer,’” she recalled EJ saying. Knowing his uncle had recovered in his own battle with cancer, EJ knew he had it in him too. He chose to serve as an example to other kids going through the same thing. “The nurses explained all the procedures to him and he said that other kids might get scared, but he said if he did it and showed them what it was, they won’t be scared,” Williams said. So EJ decided to document his battle, demonstrating his treatments and inspiring others through photos and videos on his Instagram account @Super_saiyans_ against_cancer. EJ’s treatments include going to chemotherapy three times a week and a regiment of medication that would be a hard pill to swallow for any adult, never mind a 10-year-old boy. But his mom says EJ takes everything in stride. “He’s a solid rock. He’s hilarious, and it was hard for him in the beginning, but
he made a friend in treatment,” Williams said. That friend is none other than 11-year-old Rocco Pisani of Broad Channel, who is also battling leukemia. “They support each other, they call each other and give tips about how to take medicines and they go on their appointments and tell the nurses that they have to be there at the same time,” Williams said. “Those two are an inspiration. You see happiness all over their faces when they’re together.” Next week will be a particularly hard week as EJ will be receiving treatments for the full week of Christmas, except for Christmas Day. The holidays may look different this year for EJ and his family, but he’s already received one of the greatest gifts. “He went into remission pretty quickly,” Williams said. “He’s been astounding the doctors. He’s been ultra-resilient.” However, EJ will be in this battle for the long haul. “What they tell me is with his treatment, he’s going to be doing chemo for three years. Once that stops, the clock starts to see if he’ll stay in remission. If it doesn’t come back in 10 years, he’s in the clear. His chances are good, as 80 to 95% of the kids don’t relapse. He’s going to survive this,” Williams said. For EJ, there has never been a doubt in his mind that he would overcome. “He’s not scared. He knows this is not going to beat him,” Williams said. “I’ve seen him on his worst days where he
EJ Velazquez
couldn’t breathe, and the pain was so bad that he couldn’t stand to be in his own body, but he says ‘It’s ok, I’m beating this. I’m just a little hurt right now.’” For his family, the battle has been anything but easy. “It’s like when you have a panic attack and you try to breathe and you can’t exhale. That’s what it’s been like since May 15, 2020,” Williams said. In addition to an emotional and physical toll, with EJ’s family being out of work due to the pandemic and having to provide routine care, they’ve faced financial burdens. Keeping up with EJ’s special dietary requirements, PediaSure to try to get his 60-pound body weight up, Uber and Lyft fees to the hospital as Williams doesn’t drive and other expenses, has not been easy. To help raise funds to pay for these things, and simple things to bring a smile to EJ’s face, like video game extras, EJ and his mom have created Super Saiyan Against Cancer merch such as masks and sweatshirts to raise money. The merch can be found on Williams’ Etsy.com shop: SphinxCreationsCraft. The family also has a GoFundMe account to raise money to help EJ through his Super Saiyan battle against cancer. To donate, head to: https://www. gofundme.com/f/help-ej-turnsuper-saiyan-on-cancer Make sure to keep up with EJ’s inspirational fight by following him on Instagram at: Super_ saiyans_against_cancer.

Happy Holidays from Happy Jack’s
Christmas Cheer for the Troops By Anne Marie Greene
Happy Jack’s put smiles on faces of kids and adults alike at their first annual Christmas tree lighting. On Sunday, December 13, the local bar and restaurant on Rockaway Beach Drive, in-
vited the community out for some festive fun. Santa Claus was on hand to serve up cookies and hot chocolate (spiked for the adults) as a DJ played holiday music and the tree was lit for the season.
The Religious Education program at St Francis de Sales and the 4th grade at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy worked together to create Christmas cards for those parishioners who are currently serving in our military from the Rockaway community. The children were given a short biography of the service members so they could put a personal spin on their holiday greetings. Many of the children recognized some of the names and were impressed with the fact that most if not all of those they wrote to attended their school at one time. Several of the service members are currently attending, or have attended our military academies which created an opportunity for discussion
with the school children about how many ways there are to serve our country and that some people make a career out of it The letters will be delivered to those service members who are home and some will be mailed to those stationed around the world. We want to thank Mr. Jim McKeon, who is retired Marine Corp. for organizing this project, the catechists and teachers and especially the children who put time and effort into making this Christmas season special for those who protect our freedoms. God Bless us all!

Wrestle Talk NONSTOP WRESTLING NEWS By Eric Jayden
Results from the AEW Dynamite Show on December 9, 2020 from the Daily's Palace in Jacksonville, Florida: The Young Bucks defeated TH2. FTR defeated The Varsity Blondes. The Butcher, The Blade & Eddie Kingston defeated The Lucha Brothers & Lance Archer. Abadon defeated Tesha Price. MJF defeated Orange Cassidy. The Match of the Night was MJF versus Orange Cassidy. I never get tired of watching MJF. He is a true student of the old school style. He always tells a story in the ring and never fails to entertain. Orange Cassidy put up a good fight and his gimmick appears continues to get over with the AEW fans’ base. In Wrestling News:
On a recent episode of the "Getting Over" podcast, Renee Young spoke about why she felt that the WWE did not want to involve her in any storyline doing her time with the company. Renee stated she was more than open to work any storyline even if it involved her getting physical. But, she felt that the WWE didn't want to disrupt her successful run as a broadcaster and a personality. Recently, AEW TNT Champion Darby Allin responded to criticism from Jim Ross regarding the performance of "Wrestling Dives" in which he spoke negative of. Darby Allin speaking with Sportskeeda stated that he loved Jim Ross and agree with him on the topic. Jim Ross' criticism also drew negative and positive feedback from the AEW Roster. An update has surfaced about the status of Chris Jericho and New Japan Pro Wres-
tling. According to Dave Meltzer, because of the Covid-19 pandemic, Chris Jericho has not been able to work in Japan. Also, it is unknown if Chris Jericho still has a contract with NJPW and if he doesn't, it appears there is interest in bringing him back to the company. Recent rumors about the relationship of WWE Talent and Vince McMahon continue to surface as it’s noted that many of the talent are frustrated with Vince McMahon's constant last-minute changes to the Raw and SmackDown Shows. The talent feels like they have no idea what they are doing as scripts, matches and segments change minute by minute. Current IMPACT Wrestling Superstar Taya Valkyrie has recently filed a trademark on her gimmick name with the United States Patent & Trademark Office. The report comes as
Taya Valkyrie's contract with IMPACT Wrestling is set to expire at the end of the year. The question of the week comes from Russell F. in Breezy Point and he asked, "Is there a possibility that Chris Jericho will return back to the WWE?" Well, Russell if you're asking for my opinion, I would say, yes, there is a possibility that Chris Jericho can return back to the WWE. There have been many wrestling superstars that have returned back to the WWE after long departures from the company. Like we say in wrestling "Never Say Never." If you have any questions, please send them to eavil183@ yahoo.com. You can follow me on Facebook @ericjayden and on Twitter @followthebadguy. Have a great week and stay safe!
