Volume 59, No. 46
BROOKLYN TODAY JUNE 14 Good morning. Today is the 165th day of the year. On June 14, 1866, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle ran an article called “The Dress Question.” The article concerned Dr. Mary DeWalker, a Brooklyn resident and physician who, rather than wearing a wide anklelength skirt as was the custom in those days, wore a straight skirt reaching just below the knees with a pair of trousers underneath. “The vulgar mind, unaccustomed to this sort of thing, makes it inconvenient for Mrs. DeWalker to appear in public,” the Eagle wrote. “Wherever she is seen in the street, a large and excitable crowd follows her, causing annoyance.”

Brooklyn Welcomes Kidd as Nets Coach
Savino: Let’s Drop NYS Abortion Fight
From Associated Press A key abortion rights Democrat says it's time to drop Gov. Andrew Cuomo's abortion legislation, a move that would likely end the protracted debate on it this year. Sen. Diane Savino (D-Brooklyn-Staten Island) said Thursday that the abortion fight should no longer threaten the other nine points of Cuomo’s proposal to strengthen women’s rights in these final days of the legislative session. “The continued rally for a choice bill to come to the Senate floor will neither change nor alter what is currently protected for women under existing law,” said Savino.
INSTEAD OF FENDING OFF opposing point guards, new Brooklyn Nets head coach Jason Kidd has to deal with the New York media contingent. The future Hall of Fame point guard ranks second all-time in assists and steals, is the only player ever to put up at least 15,000 points, 10,000 assists and 7,000 rebounds, and is third in career triple-doubles with 107 in the regular season and 11 more in the playoffs. LICH Supporters Demand Action by Gov By Mary Frost
Brooklyn Daily Eagle
Saying that the life of Long Island College Hospital (LICH) has reached a “critical” moment, supporters of the beleaguered Cobble Hill institution have started a letter-writing campaign to Gov. Andrew Cuomo, and will be holding a fundraiser on Friday. “The governor needs to take charge. So far, he has refused to meet with our local elected officials,” said the Brooklyn Heights Association in a statement. “We need to show Governor Cuomo that we expect him, as our elected representative, to act in the best interests of the
western Brooklyn residential and business community.” “Lean in by speaking out!” BHA told its members. “SUNY Downstate has withdrawn its closure plan but not its closure behavior,” BHA President Jane McGroarty said in a letter to the governor. “It is starving LICH in terms of personnel and house staff in violation of the TRO order [temporary restraining order] by the NYS Supreme Court.” The Concerned Physicians of Long Island College Hospital and the NYS Nurses Association have put together a fundraiser for Friday at 6 p.m. at 320 Atlantic Ave. to raise money
for the continuing legal battle. Read more about this story at www.brooklyneagle.com RIGHT: STUDENTS FROM OHOLEI
