Heading Off To College?

Practical health & wellness advice for the college student

• When filling your plate, opt for balance and variety.

A good rule of thumb is to include a lean protein, whole grain, fruit or vegetable and healthy fat (such as avocado, nuts or olive oil) at every meal.

• Don’t skip meals.

Skipping a meal often leads to overeating at your next meal. And, when ravenous, you’re more likely to reach for less healthy options.

• Moderation.

When it comes to late night pizza, soda and sugary snacks, moderation is best. We get it – you’re in college! You don’t need to completely deprive yourself of treats. We often recommend the 80/20 rule. At least 80% of your total weekly calorie consumption should include healthy, nutritious food.

oing away to college is a big transition for young adults.

Suddenly you are fully responsible for your own schedule and choices. You no longer have Dad setting a curfew or Mom reminding you to eat your vegetables. While balancing your social life, studies, and your new found freedom, don’t neglect your health. Here are some practical tips for staying well.

Drink Water

Staying hydrated helps your concentration, keeps you from overeating and improves your energy levels. A good rule of thumb is to consume your body weight in ounces. For example, if you weigh 120 pounds, consume at least 120 ounces of water per day. Carry a refillable water bottle with you to classes. Be sure to consume extra water after exercise.

Wash Your Hands

College students are in constant contact with others. Classes, dorms, walking around campus – it’s easy to catch a cold or virus. Wash your hands before eating, before touching your eyes and after coming in contact with anyone who is sick.

Armour Oaks Senior Living Community: The First Home in the Nation for Aging Couples

A Brief History of Kansas City, Senior Living, and the Wise Women who founded the WCA of Kansas City, Missouri

THE LEGACY

Many of us familiar with Kansas City History are well aware of our founding fathers of KC: Loose, Troost, Gillis, Armour, etc. The beautiful thing about Armour Oaks Senior Living Community is that we represent the wives and female family members of these wise men: Mrs. S.B. Armour (Margaret Klock), Mrs. Mary Gillis Troost and Mrs. J.S. Loose were a few of these women.

Originating with only 20 ladies of Kansas City, these determined ladies, far beyond their time, created and expanded upon over a century of compassion, respect, and a sense of family/ friendship by establishing the Women’s Christian Association of Kansas City, Missouri.

Armour Oaks Senior Living Community is a 25 acre campus, proudly celebrating its 87th year in the Historic Waldo Community at 81st Street and Wornall Road. It is the oldest continuously operating non-profit organization in Kansas City. Though the Women’s Christian Association originally established Armour Oaks (formerly Margaret Klock Memorial Home for Aging Couples)

in 1928, their legacy goes back almost 60 years prior. On January 13th, 1870, at 12th and Main, they held their first meeting. Their original goal was to “relieve the needy and distressed in this new and struggling city,” (1870, Founders of the Women’s Christian Association). They did this by sheltering widows and orphaned children during/after the Civil War. In the early 19th Century, multi-generational families were common. When an individual was no longer able to care for themselves, they would move in with grandchildren, brothers, sisters, nieces, etc. Two factors that occurred mid 19th Century implemented a decline in that typical structure. The first was the rise in industrialization labor wages. When the wages changed, there was less incentive to house their elders. The second was the Civil War. This war left behind many widows, orphaned children and elders with no family to help care for them. With nowhere else to go, many moved into Almshouses, (poorhouses and later to be known as ‘old age homes’). Kansas City had yet another factor: population.

Since the Civil War, the population in Kansas City had risen from 6,000 to nearly 30,000 in 1870 and then to 130,000 in 1889. There were hard economic times in Kansas City with little assistance available.

Churches were one of the only means of relief.

The Women’s Christian Association was the first of its kind to not be church affiliated. They started out with assisting women in need to women and their daughters in need, to women and all children in need. In 1895, on the 25th Anniversary of the Women’s Christian Association, Mrs. Armour gave $25,000 toward the concept of a home for aged couples. Her passion behind the project was to find a comforting, loving, nurturing home for her husband who was failing in his health. The home was the first in the nation established for aged couples.

Armour Oaks, Kansas City’s oldest continuous operating not-for-profit entity in Kansas City, is still part of the Women’s Christian Association.

The plaque that still adorns the Legacy House, “At evening time it shall be light” is a reminder of the Women’s Christian Association’s passion and drive; to be compassionate, kind, meek and gentle to those in need, no matter what their walks of life.

Not-For-Profit entities structure their organizations first and foremost on the clientele that they serve. A volunteer board of directors gives freely of their time, talents and experience to ensure quality in management and integrity in financial expenditures. All financial information is made public and readily available. Not-For-Profits additionally do not have stock holders nor investors that they feel the need to increase their bottom line, so monies made by Not-For-Profit entities are invested in the community that it serves. The focus and intent of a Not-For-Profit is to provide a mission-driven, person-centered, competent, hands-on care community.

Today, Armour Oaks offers a three-level adult living community. In the Legacy building is our Assisted Living and Skilled Nursing (accommodating both Rehab and Long Term Care). Independent Living is offered at The Parks apartments and our maintenance free Garden Villas. After All…There Truly Is No Place Like Home Many families live miles apart and what once was the occasional trip to visit the parents is now turning into the parent who is needing more help in order to stay living in their own home.

WHAT TO DO When our parents need the trip to see their doctor, buy groceries, pick up medications or have companionship, individuals turn towards family and friends for help. But all too often, family and friends find themselves unable to support their loved ones on a continual basis. When more is needed, many choose a Private Duty In-Home Care provider.

LONG DISTANCE FAMILIES Dotty lives in Overland Park, Kansas and her son Sam lives in Texas. After a fall accident that resulted in a right knee replacement, Sam knew that he needed someone to care for his mother. The social worker at the hospital shared that Home Health would come into the home and provide care. Sam thought wonderful because Medicare would cover this expense. Then he realized that his mother needed more care. Medicare would provide for only limited skilled care coverage. He quickly realized that Private Duty care was where he needed to turn. Sam was pleased to learn that Private Duty works in tandem with Home Health.

He gained peace of mind knowing that skilled care from Home Health would be in the home a few hours a week to meet her medical needs and that Private Duty care would continue on as much or as little as his mother needed support in activities of daily living, such as bathing, dressing, toileting and so on.

HOW TO CHOOSE PRIVATE DUTY CARE The best way to choose a caregiver is to ask the following questions: 1. Define your BEST PRACTICE STANDARDS. A. Contract Agreement that includes liability coverage, worker’s compensation, state operator license and length of time in business.

B. Complete criminal background verifications and ensure that caregivers are active and in good standing on state department registry.

C. Caregiver training in issues impacting daily care support. Ensure that the private duty provider has an alternate plan of care for times when the main caregiver is unavailable.

ADDED VALUE and COST COMPARISON The average cost of care for in-home private duty care is from $20.00 to $30.00 per hour. Rates differ based upon the following: A. Companion care = non medical B. Certified Nursing Assistant = medical training limited

C. Home Health Aide = medical training and supervised by a nurse.

The average daily rate to reside in a nursing home in Kansas is $147.00 - $166.00 and in Missouri it is $141.00 - $161.00. Therefore, the determining factor comes down to HOW IMPORTANT IS IT TO STAY LIVING IN YOUR OWN HOME? Another determining factor is HOW MUCH CARE WILL YOU NEED TO REMAIN LIVING IN YOUR HOME? Many choose Private Duty In-Home Care and spend on average up to 4 hours of care per day – three days per week. Calculating at a rate of $20.00 per hour for three 4 hour days, the weekly cost would be $240.00 per week to have a caregiver provide ONE ON ONE care and support in the comfort of your own home. In comparison to $4,830.00 per month for nursing home care and $960.00 per month for in-home care, the cost is affordable.

And more important, they are not good for your skin. Fragrance is a common cause of contact dermatitis – a rash caused by either irritation or an allergic reaction. Beware of products that claim to be “unscented” as they may contain masking fragrance. Instead, look for ones labeled “fragrance free.”

2. Smart Sunscreens

Reading the ingredient list on a bottle of sunscreen may remind you of your high school chemistry class. A simple rule to help you choose the best one is to keep it simple. The active ingredients that block both UVB and UVA are zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. These microscopic minerals reflect sun from the skin for the best “broad spectrum” protection, and also are the least likely to cause a rash. Look for an SPF 30 or higher. I say, the higher the better. I like Neutrogena, CeraVe and Elta MD.

trip to the skin care aisle can be a daunting task to even the savviest consumer. The array of choices can leave you feeling overwhelmed and uncertain. Fear no more—here are some quick and easy guidelines to help whittle down your shopping list. www.kchealthandwellness.com

3. Axe Acne

There are two common over-the-counter acne medications: salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide. For clogged pores (whiteheads and blackheads), choose a product with salicylic acid.

For tender red bumps and pimples, you’re better off with one containing benzoyl peroxide.

Be sure to use a moisturizer afterward, as both of these ingredients can dry out the skin. Make sure the one you choose is labeled as “noncomedogenic,” meaning it won’t clog your pores. I recommend Neutrogena Clear Pore cleanser, PanOxyl Creamy Wash and Cetaphil Moisturizing Lotion.

4. Reverse Wrinkles

Companies spend millions trying to sell their anti-aging products to you. Which ones really deserve your cash? For maximum benefit, look for one that contains the active ingredient “retinol.” Retinol is a form of vitamin A that has been shown to boost collagen production and smooth fine lines. Retinol can irritate the skin, so make sure to use sparingly and have a good moisturizer on hand. Try RoC Deep Wrinkle Night Cream.

6. Finally, Choose Cheap

Don’t be fooled by department store and boutique brands. By following the guidelines noted, you can get high quality items for a fraction of the cost. In fact, the product I recommend more than any other is 100 percent pure petroleum jelly. It doesn’t get much cheaper than that. Happy shopping!

5. Erase Eczema

For sensitive or eczema-prone skin, simple is best. Look for products with the fewest ingredients to minimize irritation and allergies. Bar soaps are gentler than their liquid counterparts.

Apply soap sparingly and avoid anything labeled “anti-bacterial” as these can be too harsh. I recommend Vanicream bar or Dove for Sensitive Skin. Immediately after bathing, apply a cream (not lotion) to better seal in moisture. I like Aveeno Eczema Therapy cream.

How Clinical Research is Leading the Way to Better Health

T

wenty years ago, cancer destroyed my reality when my father was diagnosed with lung cancer. Last month, the same diagnosis was given to another member of my family. My first thoughts were panicky, my second thoughts – thank goodness for medical advances.

New Drugs Approved for Cancer and Other Rare Diseases

In the last 20 years, medical research has led to numerous advances, but 2014 saw the greatest successes to date. In 2014, 44 new drugs were approved providing significant benefit for many Americans. In fact, 41% of those approvals were for rare diseases, which is especially important since many rare disease sufferers often lack options with so few drugs available and approved for treatment. For me, personally, the fact that 8 new approvals were for cancer is a reason to celebrate and maintain hope.

Impressive Advancements in Treatment Technologies

So why was 2014 such an amazing year for new treatments? The answer is varied. First, technology research is at an all time high leading to impressive advancements in technologies such as gene editing and synthetic biology. Second, The 21st Century Cures Act (HR6) is helping speed up the drug approval process. This act is helping, among other things, to remove barriers in order to increase research collaboration, incorporate patient perspective in drug development, and modernize clinical trials.

A Bigger Interest in More Clinical Trials

And finally, both physicians and patients are taking a bigger interest in “real world” trials leading to more trials taking place in regular physician practices and more patients agreeing to take part.

Advice from Students, Teachers, Counselors and Parents

t’s that time of year. The beginning of the school year is once again upon us. Walk through any major retailer and the back to school advertisements and merchandise can’t be missed. It suddenly seems that everything teens should do to prepare for school comes down to buying new things. Instead of focusing on the material aspects of the back to school season, we at Success Skills Weekly want to focus on what teens should do to have a successful term. To that end, we interviewed students, teachers, counselors, and parents to get their advice about how to have a great term and put the 6 most mentioned pieces below.

1). Be Positive and Organized.

The best way to start out the term is by being positive and organized. It is much easier to remain positive and organized if you start out that way. Organization should also be something personal that you decide. Find out what works best for you and organize yourself that way. Not everyone learns in the same manner so figuring out how you learn and catering to that will help you stay ahead.

2). Discover Your Resources.

You should also discover what resources you have at your disposal. Does your school have a writing lab? Do your teachers post assignments online? Does your school offer tutoring? What study materials are available to you through your school library? Do you have resources available to you outside of school? Knowing ahead of time where you go for extra help or quick questions will help you stay on top of assignments and tests so that you don’t feel like you are falling behind.

3). Get To Know Your Teachers.

Your teachers are the ones who decide your grades and for high school students will be the ones writing letters of recommendation for college. Sharing personal goals for each class and being honest with your teachers about problems or difficulties you are facing in each course can go a long way to helping you in the long term.

4). Be Respectful.

That includes being respectful to your teachers, your friends, your parents, and most importantly to yourself.

5). Do Your Best.

Try your best and don’t hold yourself to someone else’s standard. You know when you are doing your best work so be proud of the effort you are putting in to achieve the grades you are getting.

She launched Success Skills Weekly with her mother and brother to assist students with critical skills that are needed for success, but not being taught anywhere. Rachel is a member of the Junior League of Kansas City, and was selected as a Belle of the American Royal in 2011 and has been an active volunteer for the BOTAR and the American Royal organizations. She is also an Assistant Dance and Cheer Team Coach at her high school alma mater.

6). Avoid the Drama.

Students, parents, and teachers agreed that it takes your focus away from your work and that can affect your grades as well as your friendships. It’s better to just stay away than getting all worked up.
