rom breathtaking views atop mountain vistas to scenic lakes, rivers, parks, and hiking and biking trails to historical sites and museums to explore, festivals to enjoy, and local culture to experience . . . there is no shortage of exciting or relaxing ways to spend time in the region. The Lynchburg Region is blessed with an abundance of natural beauty, history, culture, arts, and outdoor recreation. Mountain vistas, hiking and biking trails, lakes, rivers, parks, historical sites, museums, and festivals are just some of the exciting ways to spend time in this lovely and diverse region. The Blue Ridge Parkway, one of America’s most scenic byways, provides breathtaking

views, along with hiking, biking, picnicking and wildlife. The Appalachian Trail runs through Amherst County, and Lynchburg’s Blackwater Creek Trail is a favorite spot for runners and walkers. The Natural Bridge Appalachian Trail Club, an official Appalachian Trail Club, maintains a 90-mile stretch of the trail and has regular hikes throughout the season. The
Happy Hikers, a subgroup of the organization in Lynchburg, hike every Thursday. Membership is open to both groups. Mountain biking is a popular activity here. There are trails for all skill levels in Lynchburg and Bedford County, and the local mountain biking club, Greater Lynchburg Off-road Cyclists, hosts group rides and clinics. The Storming of Thunder Ridge is Lynchburg’s only local, fully-supported road cycling event, including ride options ranging from 27 to 100 miles. The event is a fundraiser benefiting the YMCA of Central Virginia.
trail crosses Percival’s Island and ends in Amherst County. This flat, handicapped accessible, paved trail is popular with hikers, bikers, and runners all year long. The Liberty Mountain Snowflex Centre is the country’s premier point for year-round skiing, snowboarding, and tubing. Comprised of beginner, intermediate, and advanced slopes, plus a two-story lodge, this highperformance playground is the first of its kind in the United States.
The James River, Virginia’s largest river, is a great spot for boating, fishing, canoeing and kayaking. Percival’s Island is a familiar landmark in Downtown Lynchburg. Visitors may see herons, migrating waterfowl, along with native plants and animals as they follow the paved trail that bisects the natural area. The James River is the backdrop for any visit to the island, featuring views of both calm pools and rushing waters. The island is approximately 1.5 miles long and is maintained in its natural state. There are many spots where the James River is accessible and fishing is permitted. RiverWalk trail is the ultimate urban and scenic nature walk. Natural Beauty, History & Culture, Arts & Entertainment, Outdoor Adventure Recreation Dozens of running events take place throughout the year. Each September, Lynchburg welcomes thousands of runners and walkers for the Genworth Virginia 10- and 4-Miler. The Hill City’s premiere race attracts not only runners from throughout the region and the U.S., but elite runners from Kenya, Ethiopia, and other countries. Lynchburg is recognized as a “RunnerFriendly Community” by the Road Runners Club of America from 2017 through 2022. Smith Mountain Lake in southern Bedford County spans more than 20,000 acres and provides a variety of recreational opportunities – from speed boating and sailing to tubing and bass fishing. The Big Bass Tour, the nation’s premier big bass tournament, is held annually at the lake and attracts professional and amateur fishermen from across the U.S. Other lakes include Holliday Lake in Appomattox County; Mill Creek, Stonehouse, and Thrashers lakes in Amherst County, and Leesville Lake in Campbell County. 12

Public and private golf courses are located throughout the region. Public courses include Colonial Hills, Cedar Hills, and Poplar Forest golf courses in Lynchburg; Poplar Grove and Shadow Ridge in Amherst County; Mariners Landing and The Westlake at Smith Mountain Lake in Bedford County, and Hat Creek golf course in Brookneal, Campbell County. Public parks offer all types of outdoor and family recreation throughout the region. Holiday Lake 4-H Educational Center has served the youth and adults of Central and Southside Virginia since 1940. Lives have been enriched through programs, friendships, and closeness to nature. The center serves as a 4-H camp during the summer, providing an education in outdoor living for over 2,000 youth and adults from 17 counties and 2 cities in Central Virginia each summer. Other programming focuses on natural resource education, outdoor adventure, shooting education and youth leadership development.
Colleges in the region participate in a full spectrum of individual and team sports, including NCAA Division I football, basketball, and baseball. The Olympics-style Virginia Commonwealth Games are held annually and draw athletes and spectators from throughout the state. In 2019, the State Games of America was held here and attracted thousands of athletes from all over the country. The Lynchburg Hillcats, an affiliate of the Cleveland Indians, play minor league professional baseball at the Bank of the James Stadium.
Historic Sites and Museums The Town of Bedford is home to the National D-Day Memorial, which honors the American and Allied soldiers who died during the D-Day invasion of Normandy, France. More than

60,000 visitors from around the world visit the memorial each year. The 10-acre monument features a 44-foot 6-inch tall granite arch engraved with the Normandy landing’s code word, Overlord. Beneath is a statue, The Final Tribute, that consists of a bayonet affixed to a rifle topped with a helmet, a silent testimony to the great sacrifices made to ensure freedom. At Thomas Jefferson’s Poplar Forest in Bedford County, visitors can learn about the third U.S. president, his country retreat, and the enslaved population that lived and worked there. Archaeological excavations are ongoing at Poplar Forest in an effort to restore the plantation home and grounds to their Jefferson-era appearance. The site hosts an Independence Day festival that includes music, crafts, demonstrations, and a reading of the Declaration of Independence. Appomattox Court House National Historic Park, where the Civil War officially ended, includes more than a dozen structures, among them the McLean House, where Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered to Union General Ulysses S. Grant. The Lynchburg Museum System operates two museums: Point of Honor and the Lynchburg Museum. Point of Honor has
been home to some of 19th-century Virginia’s most remarkable citizens, including Dr. George Cabell, friend of Thomas Jefferson and physician to the patriot Patrick Henry. The Lynchburg Museum showcases Lynchburg’s history through exhibitions of artifacts, photographs, and artwork. Amazement Square Children’s Museum is an award-winning, hands-on children’s museum located in Downtown Lynchburg. The museum offers four floors of hands-on, interactive exhibits designed to make learning fun. The Museum serves more than 90,000 people a year from all 50 states and more than a dozen foreign countries. In Appomattox County, the American Civil War Museum tells the stories of the closing days of the war through 400 artifacts, photographs and documents. The Carver Price Legacy Museum details Appomattox’s journey from civil war to civil rights. The Appomattox County Historical Museum and Library, the former Appomattox city jail, offers tours and displays of Civil War artifacts. Outside is Memorial Park, which honors the dead from the Civil War to Vietnam. Nearby is the Clover Hill Village Museum. The Civil War Trails give visitors the chance to explore Virginia’s back roads, learning history
while driving and walking through some of the most beautiful landscapes anywhere. Lynchburg is home to an impressive 12 sites, and other stops are located throughout the region. Harlem Renaissance poet Anne Spencer’s home and garden, Edankraal, on Pierce Street in Lynchburg, are included on the National Register of Historic Places and designated a Virginia Historic Landmark, a Friends of the Library USA Literary Landmark, and a Historic Landmark by the Association for the Study for Afro-American Life and History. Avoca, a Victorian-era house museum in Altavista, sits on property once owned by Charles Lynch, brother of Lynchburg’s founder John Lynch. Avoca, a popular wedding venue, is owned by the Town of Altavista and hosts tours and annual events. The Bedford Museum and Genealogical Library showcases Bedford’s history from Native American life, through the Civil War, and further into the 20th Century. Historic Sandusky, originally the home of Major George Christian Hutter, is a public museum owned and operated by Lynchburg College. during the Battle of Lynchburg. It is a Registered Virginia Historic Landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Legacy Museum of African American History in Lynchburg focuses its exhibits on the region’s African American experience. The Monacan Indian Museum in Amherst County provides insights into the experience of this indigenous nation. In 2019, after decades of hard work, the Monacan Tribe received federal recognition. The Museum of the Confederacy in the town of Appomattox offers exhibitions showcasing Civil War artifacts, as well as photos, letters, and diaries. Red Hill in nearby Brookneal, is Patrick Henry’s last home and burial place. The site includes a museum, seven historic buildings, the Patrick Henry grave site, and the grounds overlooking the Staunton River Valley, which appears much as it did in Henry’s time. Several beautiful, historic cemeteries are located within the region. Old City Cemetery in Lynchburg is the oldest municipal cemetery still in use in the state of Virginia, one of the oldest such burial grounds in the United States, and a Virginia Historic Landmark on the National Register of Historic Places.
Festivals The region also hosts numerous annual festivals, including apple festivals in Amherst and Bedford Counties and Get Downtown, a street fair that draws tens of thousands of people to Downtown Lynchburg. The International Festival, also held downtown, is a family event packed full of activities and unique performances for visitors of all ages. The Campbell County Heritage Festival honors that county’s rich cultural heritage, and Amherst and Bedford counties host oldtime county fairs with midway rides, livestock, contests, and exhibits. Uncle Billy’s Day Festival in Altavista has something for everyone with live music, crafts, food, car show, flea market, children’s activities and fireworks.

It’s not hard to see why the Lynchburg region has been tabbed an Outstanding RunnerFriendly Community by the Road Runners Club of America and recognized by Forbes as a city with a high quality of life.

Within the city limits alone are more than 1,000 acres of parkland – from Percival’s Island Natural Area to Hollins Mill Park, Ivy Creek Park and the expansive Riverside Park, to name a few – and nearly 40 miles of trails, paved and unpaved. The three-mile, asphalted Blackwater Creek Trail serves as a spine anchoring several winding earthen trails and connecting with other paved routes. The popular trail cuts through forest along an abandoned railway bed (complete with a lighted cave-like tunnel) and offers a feeling of escape into nature, right in the heart of the city. Parks and trails make up more than three percent of the city’s land, with plenty of playgrounds (including a spray ground), picnic areas and a nature zone with some live critters as well as pelts, antlers and other natural items for children to explore hands-on. A popular bucket list item to check off, one of many opportunities in the region, is the Historic Genworth Virginia Ten Miler, one of the oldest road races of its kind in the country that draws runners from across the globe. The event, which marked 45 years last September, has become a festival celebration for the city. More extreme runners can crank their sport up to 11 with the Lynchburg Ultra Series. Ultrarunning has been formalized in the community for more than two decades. Locals, such as legend Dr. David Horton (who ran from California to New York to finish the Trans-America Footrace), have set records at extreme distances. With the world’s longest hiking-only footpath in the world, the Appalachian Trail, cutting right through the region, there’s access to an endless supply of adventures, right in the region’s backyard. Families can venture along the Appalachian Trail to Matt’s Creek Shelter or take to the Blue Ridge Parkway and hike Bedford
County’s Sharp Top and Flat Top peaks, which anchor the picturesque view of Lynchburg’s western skyline. From must-see, breathtaking views like McAfee Knob and Old Rag Mountain (one of the Mid-Atlantic’s most popular destinations) to the exhilarating satisfaction of successfully boulder-hopping to the top of Devil’s Marbleyard, there’s always a fresh challenge on the area’s outdoor must-do checklist. For those really looking for a beast to slay on their bucket list, look no further than the Priest: a nine-mile-trip 3,000-feet up some of the steepest terrain in Central Virginia. It’s been called one of the most difficult hikes on the whole Appalachian Trail.

Riverviews Artspace has become a hub for creative activities in Downtown Lynchburg. Since 2003, the gallery and studio space has brought in more than 220 artists, 90 published writers, screened more than 70 independent and foreign films, and attracted more than 100,000 visitors. Throughout the year, First Fridays gives a chance to showcase local arts and musicians and bring in new visitors to the space.

Located in the heart of Downtown Lynchburg, Amazement Square offers incredible opportunities for hands-on learning. Spanning more than 29,000 square feet, each interactive exhibit offers different experiences for children to dive into something new. In the Kaleidoscope Gallery, put on a show with the On Stage: Rock Star Experience or create a one-of-a-kind piece of art in the glass Paintbox Room. At the Board a Batteau exhibit, the museum’s more than 90,000 visitors are transported back to the 19th century where they learn what it was like to steer a batteau down the James River – with costumes and all. And you can’t forget about the four-story Amazement Tower where guests can slide, climb, and zip through the museum in one of the nation’s tallest climbing structures. But Amazement Square isn’t just for the kiddos. Adults can get in on the fun with Museum After Dark, where the museum opens after hours for a fun night filled with drinks, games, and fun just for the parents. 20

With 640 seats, Liberty University’s Tower Theater gives Lynchburg Region residents a taste of Broadway without traveling to New York City. The theater sports an orchestra pit, balcony, catwalks, professional fly tower, and more than 12,000 squarefeet of backstage and support area. The theater has housed big name productions such as Les Miserables, Beauty and the Beast, Hello Dolly, Big Fish, The Little Mermaid, and Guys and Dolls. Opera on the James, celebrating its 13th Season, is an OPERA AMERICA Level Four Professional Company in Lynchburg. The company produces two fully-staged opera events with orchestra each season, as well as a mid-winter concert, short opera, or Cabaret. The company offers a community outreach program of performances and lectures in schools, community venues, and in the opera building at 701 Main Street. The Tyler Young Artist Program, a quartet of singers chosen through national auditions, performs the majority of community programs. The Lynchburg Symphony Orchestra has been an integral part of the cultural fabric of the Lynchburg Region since it began in 1983. Over the years the LSO has performed more than 200 concerts ranging from classical to pops and provided annual educational concerts to over 10,000 children at local schools and community centers. Celebrities performing with the orchestra include Tony Award-winning actress and singer Faith Prince, pianist Gustavo Romero, and country musicians Emmy Lou Harris and Roy Clark. Dr. Christopher Swanson is conductor and music director. The Lynchburg Arts Festival, held annually in September, attracts artists and art lovers from across Virginia. The Lynchburg Art Club and Gallery offers monthly exhibits in the galleries, workshops, and classes. The third floor has been reclaimed as an environmentally stable storage area with additional studio space. The Bedford Artisan Trail showcases more than 80 artists, craftsmen, orchards and wineries who support the arts and agri-tourism. Amherst Glebe Arts Response, Inc. (AGAR) in Clifford is a non-profit organization that produces and presents performances and workshops in music, theater, dance, poetry, historical readings, and lectures. It also facilitates exhibits of visual art and film and conducts Amherst

County oral history projects. AGAR was a major presenter for the heritage celebration of the 250th Anniversary of Amherst County and the 100th Anniversary events for the Town of Amherst. The Bower Center for the Arts in Bedford is the area’s cultural center of visual and performing arts, education, community engagement, and personal enrichment. The Center offers concerts featuring a variety of music, as well as music and art classes. The Virginia Center for the Creative Arts in Amherst County is a nationally known retreat for writers, artists, and composers. The region’s Parks and Recreation departments offer a wide range of art classes from beading to sculpture. Lynchburg College’s Daura Gallery features the works of Catalan artist Pierre Daura and has exhibitions of artists such as Queena Stovall. The Daura exhibitions are free and open to the public. The Maier Museum of Art at Randolph College showcases works by notable artists such Georgia O’Keeffe and Edward Hopper. The gallery is open as to the public. Sweet Briar College’s Anne Gary Pannell Center is the College’s principal art gallery and home to its art history program. First Fridays is a monthly event in Downtown Lynchburg when local arts organizations and galleries stay open late to debut performances, hold openings, and exhibit new works. Second Fridays in Bedford provides opportunities for visitors to experience the unique shops, restaurants, and art venues in Bedford’s Centertown.

The Jefferson Choral Society, a community chorus based in Lynchburg, performs music ranging from Mozart to show tunes. The chorus has performed at Carnegie Hall, the Washington National Cathedral and across Europe. Little Town Players in Bedford has presented live theater to the community for more than 40 years. Shows range from musicals to drama. Renaissance Theatre is Lynchburg’s oldest community theater and is known for ambitious productions such as The Full Monty. Liberty’s Winterfest, a weekend of concerts and activities held over the New Year’s weekend, attracts thousands of young visitors to the area. E. C. Glass and Heritage high schools in Lynchburg have excellent theater programs as do Brookville High School in Campbell County and Jefferson Forest High School in Bedford County. For entrepreneur Dave McCormack, Waukeshaw Development has a double meaning. “There was this old tank behind this building in Petersburg,” he said. “It had vines growing all over it and no one knew what to do with it. But this man wanted to preserve it because he knew it could have a new life as something else. He saw that it still had a purpose.” The tank happened to be from Waukeshaw, Wis., and the name stuck with McCormack as he got into the business of doing just that: restoration. Over the last few years, it seems that buildings and properties all over the region have been given the chance at a new life, thanks to creative thinking from individuals such as McCormack. But according to McCormack, the secret to finding the right space is to go in with an open mind. “The building tells us what it wants to be and that happens a lot,” McCormack said. “Sometimes, people introduce us to properties, and we say no.” McCormack has found success in that approach. In 2017, he helped open Beale’s Brewery in Bedford, Va., in the old Hampton Looms woolen mill and Frank Chervan furniture building. But that’s not the only project McCormack has his hands on. He’s also working on developing several other properties in Amherst and Bedford counties, including the Amherst Mill and the former Phelps School.

“I love historical properties,” he said. “I think Amherst has undiscovered potential and we’ve been working with the county. It’s exciting to stumble upon an iconic property and discover what it could be.” It was a similar feeling for developer Blair Godsey when he began looking at The Virginian. For years, the abandon hotel had sat vacant on Church Street. At first, Godsey and his partners wanted to turn the building into apartments, but quickly realized it was problematic. “The ratio of apartments to common areas was far too large to make it work,” he said. “But we saw that there was a need for a large-scale boutique hotel in downtown.”

A $5 million loan from the Lynchburg Economic Development Authority helped fill the gaps in funding, which Godsey said was critical. Despite setbacks in the project, The Virginian opened its doors last May and business is booming. “Fortunately, the risk paid off,” Godsey said. “It’s incredible to see how The Virginian is doing in the short year it’s been open and how it’s become an anchor of Downtown Lynchburg.” The Academy Center of the Arts has also seen similar success since its official opening in late 2018. The once-vacant theater holds anywhere between two to four events during the week, according to Executive Director Geoffrey Kershner. But now more people are discovering us. They’re learning about the classes we offer and the performance space. “Lynchburg is the region’s center,” he said. “It’s because of risks very early on, like the Craddock Terry, that we’re seeing other buildings and infrastructure come together. People are now believers and have an interest in downtown. They see it as an asset.” Kershner said it’s encouraging to see developers take an interest in downtown and its growth. “I think three or four years ago we saw a tipping point,” he said. “Having federal and state tax incentives to help restore historical buildings helps.” McCormack said having access to those funds is critical for any project to get off the ground because it can help a project move forward. “You think of something like the Phelps School,” he said. “It was a terrible building. It would have been expensive for the county to demolish it. But now, you can have these historical tax credits and create something that’s viable to the county for years to come.” McCormack said if developers are willing to take the risk and see the potential, the region will continue to grow. “For a long time, no one thought there was this demand for nightlife and a city scape where people could flock to,” he said. “It’s a new concept and people are thinking of new business and ideas that can complement the region.” LynchburgRegion.org

hen you think of popular, up and coming cities, places like Portland, Asheville, and Austin come to mind. But Lynchburg is quickly butting its way into the competition.
Recently ranked as the #1 place for millennials to live by Reviews.org, the Lynchburg Region has certainly become the place to be in Virginia with its low living costs, vibrant food scene, and arts-driven community. Downtown Lynchburg Association Executive Director Ashley Kershner said it’s a city with a small town feel that makes Lynchburg unique.
The Bluffwalk Completed by the city in 2015, the Bluffwalk consists of a series of walkways, trails, and staircases that connect Jefferson Street to Commerce Street. With beautiful views of the James River, Kershner said the Bluffwalk has easily become a great downtown destination.

“Since the Bluffwalk has come in, there have been many restaurants that have popped up along it, as well as lofts and apartments,” she said. “It’s a way for us to enjoy our river from above.”
“The Academy has events going on nearly 300 days out of the year,” Kershner said. “They’re able to bring in regionally and nationally acclaimed acts.” Riverviews Artspace also plays an important role in Lynchburg’s colorful art scene. The non-profit gallery constantly hosts new exhibits and special events, including First Fridays throughout the year. Since its opening, Riverviews Artspace has brought in more than 220 artists to Lynchburg. If you like community theater, Renaissance Theatre has brought classics to life for the past 25 years. Most recently, the company put on “Driving Miss Daisy” and “Living in State”. Continued on page 32
Trails Whether you walk, bike, or run, Kershner said Lynchburg’s extensive trail systems are not a well-kept secret. “Our trails are full all the time,” she said. And for good reason too. Boasting more than 40 miles, Lynchburg’s trail systems take residents through lush greenery, only minutes from the heart of downtown. Paths like Blackwater Creek Trail follow an abandon railroad bed, while the Riverwalk takes you on adventures up close to the James River and through Percival’s Island. “It’s pretty unique to be in a downtown urban environment and be on an island in three minutes,” Kershner said. “It’s a fantastic experience for families to come down here to bike and hit the trail and then eat ice cream on Jefferson Street.”
Art Scene The arts have always been woven into Lynchburg’s history. In 2018, the Academy Center of the Arts re-opened its doors on Main Street once again after completing a multi-million-dollar renovation, welcoming a new chapter of the Academy’s 100 plus year history. LynchburgRegion.org

Restaurants and Coffee Shops Whether you’re in the mood for a slice of pizza or something a little more upscale, Kershner calls Downtown Lynchburg’s restaurant scene “a foodie’s paradise.” In 2018 alone, downtown saw seven new restaurants open. “We have fine dining. We have fast and casual and everything in between,” Kershner said. “I think some of the best restaurants are concentrated in downtown and I don’t see that trend stopping. You’ve got great aesthetics, you’ve got great food, but there are also places that are really fun to gather. I think each place has something unique to offer.” It’s the same for downtown’s unique coffee shops. No matter where you are downtown, you can be reassured there’s a coffee shop nearby to curb your caffeine cravings. “We’ve got a lot of high-quality coffee in Lynchburg,” Kershner said. “We have businesses either roasting their own coffee or importing coffee from other places. They’re experts that know what they’re doing and that really shows.”

Lofts Over the years, developers downtown have turned once abandoned buildings into beautiful living spaces that overlook historical downtown or the James River. While they boast modern amenities and aesthetically pleasing décor, some lofts are converted factories that once played a huge role in Lynchburg’s development. With lots of options depending on your needs, Kershner said downtown living has become more appealing over the years. Now there are more than 1,200 residents living downtown.
“People want to be in close walking distance to restaurants and bars,” she said. “Downtown is really the only place where residents can do that. People are enjoying a walkable lifestyle and going away from wanting to drive everywhere. It’s cool to be able to walk out your front door and go wherever you need to go.”
Community Market The Community Market has been a Downtown Lynchburg staple for years. One of Virginia’s oldest farmer’s markets, the market brings in the best of the region to the heart of downtown. It also regularly hosts events on the weekends to encourage community engagement and to get residents to eat local. Founded in 1786, Lynchburg is rich in history, yet, the city is growing with forward-thinking economic opportunity, diversity, and a vibrant atmosphere. As the commercial, cultural, entertainment, and retail hub of the region, the city is alive with activity. Lynchburg was selected as one of the Milken Institute’s 2017 “Best Performing Cities,” an index that ranks U. S. metropolitan areas by how well they create and sustain jobs and economic growth.

City of Churches Due to its large number of houses of worship, Lynchburg has been called the City of Churches. In terms of worship style and faith tradition, there’s pretty much something to meet any organized religious preference. Thomas Road Baptist Church has the largest membership – approximately 24,000. Quaker Meeting House The oldest church building in the city was built in 1798 on land donated by the Lynch family. Today, it resides on the Quaker Memorial Presbyterian Church grounds, which are also the site of the remains of the city’s founder, John Lynch.
Old City Cemetery Established in 1806, the Old City Cemetery is an extraordinary 27-acre public garden, “history park,” and wedding venue located in the heart of Lynchburg. In addition to being an active place of burial and remembrance, the cemetery is also one of the busiest and most popular attractions in the city, hosting more than 33,000 visitors annually. A Virginia Historic Landmark on the National Register of Historic Places, Old City Cemetery is also an arboretum of historic plants, including more than 200 antique rose specimens.
Monument Terrace Monument Terrace in Downtown Lynchburg is a lasting memorial to Lynchburg’s sons and daughters who have died in war. The monument was fashioned after the terrace steps common in France and Italy, with Lynchburg’s iconic “doughboy” standing at the foot of its 135 steps, leading upward to the Old Courthouse Museum.

Arts Amherst Glebe Arts Response, Inc., (AGAR) in Clifford provides film and visual art exhibits, historical readings, lectures, and a number of performances and workshops, including music, theater, dance, and poetry. The AGAR was a major presenter for the heritage celebration of the 250th Anniversary of Amherst County and the 100th Anniversary events for the Town of Amherst. Amherst County is home to a nationally known retreat for writers, artists and composers – The Virginia Center for the Creative Arts.
Education The county’s graduation rate exceeds the state average and all of its schools are accredited for mathematics. Amherst County is home to seven elementary schools, two middle schools, and one high school, as well as a historic, private women’s liberal arts and sciences college – Sweet Briar College. With 3,250 acres, Sweet Briar is nationally recognized for its beauty and features 21 buildings on the Virginia Landmarks Register and the National Register of Historic Places. Appomattox County With a storied history as the place where the nation reunited, tourism is a centerpiece of Appomattox County’s economy.
History and Tourism Featuring a village of original and reconstructed buildings, as well as 1,800 acres of rolling hills surrounding the Battle of Appomattox Court House, the Appomattox County Courthouse Historical Park brings history to life. Established in 1935, the park contains the Wilmer McLean House where General Robert E. Lee made his formal surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia. The Carver Price Legacy Museum details Appomattox’s journey from Civil War to Civil Rights. The Museum of the Confederacy in the town of Appomattox showcases Civil War artifacts, as well as photos, letters, and diaries from the era. Appomattox County Historical Museum and Library, the former Appomattox city jail, offers tours and displays of Civil War artifacts. Outside, a Memorial Park honors those Americans who died in conflicts from Civil War to Vietnam. Nearby is the Clover Hill Village Museum.

For a bit more of a rush, whitewater rafting and canoeing excursions are popular adventures on the Appomattox River, a tributary of the James River. Holliday Lake State Park is teeming with largemouth bass, yellow perch, crappie, and bluegill ready to be caught. The 150-acre lake also features a guarded beach. The park has several hiking trails, including a connector trail to the 10.2-mile Carter Taylor Multi-Use Trail for hikers, cyclists, and horseback riders. Campgrounds, picnic shelters, playgrounds, a “Critter Hole” play area, seasonal concession stand, gift shop, and boat ramp are all on-hand. Canoes, kayaks, jon boats, stand-up paddleboards, and paddle boats are available to rent.

Throughout the spring and summer, Appomattox Friday Cheerz offers live entertainment in the park with food and drinks available. The Appomattox Court House National Historical Park and the American Civil War Museum each year offer visitors the opportunity to observe demonstrations and participate in other programs to commemorate the end of the Civil War.
Festivals and Annual Events The Historic Appomattox Railroad Festival, held the second full weekend in October, is a family-friendly festival commemorating the Norfolk & Western Railroad’s donation of the Appomattox Depot to the Town of Appomattox. Bedford County
Tourism Visitors from all over the world visit the area, making tourism a vital piece of its economy. The National D-Day Memorial draws 60,000 visitors a year to commemorate the valor, fidelity, and sacrifices of the Allied Armed Forces who landed in Normandy, France during World War II. The Blue Ridge Parkway is enjoying record visitation, particularly during the fall foliage season. The Beale Treasure, a legendary cache of gold, silver, and jewels, attracts treasure hunters. Numerous film crews have utilized Johnson’s Orchards as the setting for their Beale Treasure stories, including “Unsolved Mysteries,” the BBC, Fox, the Travel Channel, and for Korean television. Johnson’s is a sixth-generation, family-owned and operated farm nestled at the foot of the Peaks of Otter. Home to the Peaks of Otter Winery, Johnson’s produces approximately 30 varieties of native fruit wines. Several other apple and peach orchards also dot the mountain landscape and provide opportunities for visitors to pick their own fruit or buy it prepacked. Many give tours and host special events throughout the year, like Johnson’s Horse and Hound Wine Festival. 42

The National D-Day Memorial draws 60,000 visitors a year... Each year, the area’s best flavors and personalities come together for the Town of Bedford’s “Centerfest,” a weekend of arts and crafts, food, and entertainment converging right in Bedford’s Centertown.
Festivals and Annual Events Known as “The Christmas Capital of Virginia,” Bedford hosts a spectacular light display each year at the English Meadows Elks Home. The 60-plus year tradition includes festive, colorful arrangements following the long entrance up around the circle of the home’s grand entrance. Liberty Lake Park is also known for its impressive light show, with gleaming displays positioned throughout the park. The Bedford County Fair attracts over 25,000 people every year. It features rides, food, live music, educational demonstrations, livestock exhibits, fireworks, an antique farm equipment show and a car show.
Historic Sites The Town of Bedford (founded in 1784) preserves its heritage through a number of historical sites. Historic Avenel, an 1830s manor house said to harbor a ghost, and the Bedford Historic Meeting House, a church building erected in 1838, are just two of the 218 contributing structures that have placed the town of Bedford on the National Register of Historic Places. The Bedford Museum and Genealogical Library traces Bedford’s history from early Native American times up through the mid-20th century. The city’s historic cemetery, Longwood Cemetery, is the site of burials as far back as the Revolutionary War. Poplar Forest, Thomas Jefferson’s Bedford County retreat home, stands as a testimonial to Jefferson’s creativity and architectural genius. Archaeological excavations are ongoing at Poplar Forest in an effort to restore the plantation home and grounds to their Jeffersonera appearance. The home is open for tours April through November.
Outdoor Recreation Smith Mountain Lake, Virginia’s largest man-made lake, provides fishing, boating, and all manner of water sports. The lake is surrounded by activity as well, from golf and horseback riding to hiking, shopping, and dining. Smith Mountain Lake State Park has a sandy beach for swimmers and sunbathers and provides easy access for visitors who wish to launch boats, camp, or picnic by the water. Liberty Lake Park serves as the recreation center for the Bedford area. The 60-acre park offers baseball and softball fields, basketball, racquetball, tennis, and volleyball courts, roller-skating and walking loops, picnic facilities, and an award-winning handicap hiking trail. Economy Historically an agriculture economy, Bedford County has grown to attract a wide range of industries, from nuclear energy to wireless communications and, yes, agriculture, which is still an important sector. The Town of Bedford is designated a Virginia Enterprise Zone while the county is one of Virginia’s official Technology Zones. Bedford also has a number of hotels and restaurants to provide visitor accommodations – whether they are looking for some quaint county charm or a more familiar experience.
Education The Bedford County Public School system’s mission of “empowering learners for future success” means personalized learning is emphasized. Students participate in internships, work-based training, and community service projects. Bedford County has 13 elementary schools, three middle schools, and three high schools. Also, the Bedford Science and Technology Center provides workforce training to high school students.
Campbell County A scenic tapestry of wineries and farms, Campbell County lies 115 miles west of Richmond, the state capital, 200 miles southwest of Washington, D.C., and 200 miles west of Norfolk.
Altavista Tree-lined streets, Victorian-era homes, and quaint shops of antique treasures, local finds, and natural remedies give the Town of Altavista a pleasant, laid-back atmosphere. Restaurants serve dishes ranging from Southern fare to exotic cuisine. The Trade Lot, held every first Saturday, is time to barter and trade and buy fresh food straight from the farm. The Altavista Train Station, a former Southern Railway Station, was renovated in 1987 to serve as a meeting room for business organizations, civic clubs, and individuals. Brookneal Founded on the banks of the historic Staunton River, the Town of Brookneal began as a ferry crossing, linking Campbell, Halifax, and Charlotte counties. Today, visitors can enjoy a round of golf at Hat Creek, taste fine boutique wine at nearby San Soucy Vineyards, or participate in festival events such as Day on the Town. Small Business Development Innovate Lynchburg Council Center The council serves as a regional connector, catalyst, and advocate for a dynamic technology workforce, innovative business environment, and collaborative community culture through networking, training, advocacy, youth outreach, and an increased focus on tech-based entrepreneurship. The Future Focus Foundation, created by the Innovate Lynchburg, partners with local colleges, employers, and non-profit organizations to offer STEM programs that engage the region’s youth. Located at the Lynchburg Regional Business Alliance, the center is an effective provider of customized counseling and education for small businesses in the region. A Nuclear City Burning hot at the core of Lynchburg’s economy, the nuclear sector is driving innovation and fueling growth. After Framatome moved its headquarters to Lynchburg in 2018, joining BWX Technologies, two of the United States’ four large-scale nuclear companies are now headquartered in the Lynchburg Region. “As nuclear technology and innovation form a larger impact on alternative power generation, biotechnology, cybersecurity, and other sectors, the opportunity to grow and expand Lynchburg’s nuclear technology sector is substantial,” said Marjette Upshur, Director of Economic Development and Tourism, City of Lynchburg. “With firms such as Framatome and BWX Technologies headquartered in the City, Lynchburg is the leading nuclear technology cluster in the U.S.” Lynchburg has a nuclear workforce at 8 percent above the national average and its nuclear industry is 34 percent greater. Approximately 27 firms with similar capabilities and suppliers help maintain a highly-skilled labor market. “Lynchburg’s nuclear technology industries form a strong export cluster with the potential to position Lynchburg as a center for new and emerging technologies,” Upshur said.
BWXT President and CEO Rex Geveden said that “the economic multipliers are enormous” when you consider not just the nuclear workers – BWXT employs 2,700 in Lynchburg and Framatome has 1,300 of its 2,300 North American employees at three Lynchburg locations – but the supply chain of contractors (electrical, IT, etc.) as well. “Lynchburg is the most important nuclear city in the United States,” Geveden said. “There’s some nuclear magic going on here in Lynchburg, Virginia, and I think the economics and the productivity bear that out.” Geveden acknowledged Framatome along with his own company as “two of the most important nuclear companies” in the US. components from harsh environmental factors, and virtual and augmented reality tools,” explained Framatome President and CEO Gary Mignogna. “We are a leader in services, fuel, and instrumentation and control for the nuclear energy industry,” Mignogna, an area native who recently celebrated 40 years with his company, said. “Our people lead the way when it comes to responding to the needs of our customers, both planned and emergent, and in developing new methods and tools to improve the operation of their nuclear power plants.” Geveden also cited his company’s innovations, which he calls “world-leading.” “We are pushing innovations in the nuclear market that will be economically disruptive,” he said, “that will create growth opportunities for this company and create new franchise platforms for BWXT.” BWXT has been on an impressive growth trajectory, increasing by about $100 million in sales each of the past few years. “A lot of that has been driven by some of the innovations that are coming from within this company,” Geveden said. Among the examples he cited was medical radioisotope technology BWXT invented that will reduce costs and “change the face of oncology.” 60

The company is also “taking a leadership position in advanced manufacturing as it applies to nuclear reactors and complex fuel forms.” With growing interest in “going green” in regard to energy, BWXT and Framatome each see opportunity in the energy sector as well. “We are leading the industry in developing a fuel design that will significantly improve the economic efficiency of nuclear power plants and increase the available response time in the unlikely scenario of an unanticipated event,” Mignogna said. “With safety and operational excellence at the forefront of our mission, our folks continuously develop new ways to make nuclear power more efficient and help provide affordable and reliable energy for North America and in other countries that recognize the benefits of this source of clean energy.” In what could be a challenging market, Geveden said BWXT is finding ways to grow, “primarily through innovation.” “There are so many interesting ways we can grow this business and I think that is surprising to the market,” he said. hi le markets rise and fall, the security of two steady hands that have mastered their trade remains, well, steady. Nationally, there are 600,000 unclaimed jobs in the trades.
“The opportunities in our country, state and region are wide open for skilled trades workers,” Virginia Technical Institute Executive Director Tyke Tenney said. “In our local region there will be a need for nearly 6,000 tradesmen in the next five years. With the average age of the current tradesmen at 58, companies worry that they won’t be able to find enough trained workers to fill job openings. “Local educational organizations are committed to meeting the needs of area employers and to ensure that locals have opportunities to get the skills they need to secure meaningful, rewarding employment. “Virginia Technical Institute has hit record enrollment numbers each year for the past four years, due to our curriculum that intentionally meets the needs of the local industries,” Tenney said. “We have worked with the local companies to provide the most in-demand skills.” VTI offers plumbing, electrical, carpentry, welding, HVAC, industrial maintenance, pipe fitting and, most recently, Programmable Logic Controls (PLC). Programs follow the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) curriculum. “You can make a good living as a skilled tradesperson in the Lynchburg region, and because of a shortage of qualified workers, salaries will only increase,” Tenney added. “Trades jobs offer a security rarely found in other professions. Those who have mastered a trade are also least affected by the growing use of technology. The growing demand for these professions provides for steady employment, and are, in many cases, recession proof.” The institute also partners with local companies, 23 to date, for training. This includes company-specific hands-on skills training, industrial safety/OSHA certification, PLC and backflow prevention. Students train in a 115,000-square-foot facility in Altavista, which includes eight classrooms and eight state-of-the-art labs. Its education is certified by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia and the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER), as well as several workforce investment boards. As the baby boomer generation continues into retirement, this is going to leave more and more position openings for younger generations to find great career options especially in the skilled trades.” Narehood pointed out that talent is a top priority for successful economic development. “An increase in skilled workers not only impacts individuals, but also benefits the entire community,” she said. “There is opportunity for business expansion and new industry recruitment when our region can demonstrate a growing capacity for skilled workers. Access to skilled workers supports business retention and creates an inviting environment for new companies to establish or relocate.”
CVCC is also partnering with regional school divisions to expand career and technical education offerings for high-school students. Narehood said the school has recently received grant funds to continue to expand career and technical education opportunities. Banker Steel, LLC employs 280 people in the Lynchburg region, with about 210 of those in the shops. President Chet McPhatter said the company needs to hire another 30-40 employees just this year. “Being a tradesperson is a great way to make a living,” McPhatter said. “Every day you are building something new, and it’s a skill you can take with you anywhere.” McPhatter said Banker Steel could easily hire 20 experienced people in the Lynchburg area (the company also has Florida and New Jersey locations) now. Still, he has found it a challenge to get more people funneled into training programs, despite the tremendous opportunities. “Coming out of high school, you can easily make $30K to $40K a year instead of potentially adding student loan debt to yourself,” he said. “As an employee continues to develop and take on more responsibilities, that number grows into six figures. For those that have the drive, there is no limit to where you can end up. Our owner has been in the steel business for 42 years and started straight out of high school into the industry.”

SWISSOMATION MAKES CRITICAL VENTILATOR PARTS Five years ago, Swissomation, a custom micromachining company in Amherst, began making ventilator parts for Ventec Life Systems. In 2019, the family-owned Swissomation made 30,000 parts for ventilators, but early this year their business took an unexpected turn.

bring their workforce to 26. They secured a contract with General Motors to make parts for ventilators that would go to the Strategic National Stockpile. In 2020 they produced 800,000 ventilator parts, and while the GM contract is completed, they are still making parts for Ventec, a Washington-based company that makes the only mobile, multifunction ventilator for use in hospitals or homes. During the crisis, Swissomation had to put other contracts on hold, but Schjonning said most of their customers understood. They are now filling those contracts for a wide variety of customers who need small parts in different sizes and materials. Swissomation has lathes and mills capable of micro-machining parts as small as .004 inches in diameter up to 1.625 inches, for any industry. Their machines run around-the-clock to produce parts made from aluminum, beryllium, copper, brass, bronze, plastic, stainless steel, steel and other materials. Schjonning explained that the material comes in 12-foot bars of varying diameters. Computers are programmed to use different tools to shape the raw material into needed parts. Even as they catch up with back orders, they still have a lot of machines producing ventilator parts. “It’s definitely very rewarding,� Schjonning said, noting that the multifunctional Ventec machines are game-changing for people suffering from the long-term effects of Covid-19.

The peel-and-stick skin is placed on a surface, like a door handle or counter, with a visible label. “NanoSeptic Skins and Mats turn dirty high-traffic, public touchpoints into continuously self-cleaning surfaces,” the company website declares. “Powered by light, NanoSeptic surfaces utilize mineral nano-crystals, which create a powerful oxidation reaction.” The surface continually oxidizes organic contaminants. Unlike traditional disinfectants and cleaners, the NanoSeptic surface uses no poisons, heavy metals or chemicals, and nothing is released from the surface because the nano-crystals are molecularly bonded to the material. Mark Sisson, who co-founded NanoTouch Materials in 2012 with Dennis Hackemeyer, said the Forest-based company has seen business increase tremendously since the pandemic. They have grown from three to 20 employees and will triple production space by the end of the year from 2,500 square feet to 7,500 square feet. They are also developing new products for light switches and doorknobs with the help of engineering companies building new machines for them, Sisson said. EPA regulations prevent Sisson from claiming that their product kills Covid-19 – or even germs, for that matter. He said the regulatory agencies are not keeping up with technology. While the EPA regulates disinfectants, they have no regulations for self-cleaning surfaces. 72

Customers clearly have faith in the product. “We’ve gotten orders from pretty much every industry, every state and probably a dozen countries outside the U.S.,” Sisson said. The company recommends replacing the skins every 90 days, or sooner, if the writing on the label is wearing off. The skins can also be wiped down with disinfectants because the mineral is not affected by chemical cleaners, Sisson noted, but added if some facilities go overboard with cleaning multiple times a day, they may compromise the adhesive on the back of the skin. and businesses since 1909. LITESHEET SOLUTIONS CREATES DISINFECTING CABINET LiteSheet Solutions, a small lighting manufacturer in Forest, is combating Covid-19 with a disinfecting cabinet that can virtually eliminate the virus. Nisha Duggal, assistant professor of biomedical sciences and pathobiology at Virginia Tech, said her lab tested the cabinet. “It killed greater than 99.95 percent of SARS-CoV-2 in 15 minutes,” she said. Debbie Cebry, manufacturing director for LiteSheet, said when the Virginia Manufacturing Association asked companies what they could do to combat the pandemic, LiteSheet knew it could help. They created the cabinet in just two months, putting it on the market in September. The 18-by-18-inch cabinet shoots UV-C light from four corners of the box, cleaning small tools, electronics or other instruments placed inside. It’s critical that the items don’t touch or overlap, Cebry said. Cebry explained that there are three types of ultraviolet, or UV, light. UV-A and UV-B give us a sunburn and kill some bacteria, but UV-C light can kill Covid-19. By mid-October, LiteSheet, which employs 10 people, had sold about 10 boxes, including sales to manufacturers that need to clean tools between shift changes, she said. The cleaning process, which does not harm electronics, can take one minute to three hours depending on the materials being cleaned, Cebry said. Each cabinet costs $3,000. While they would like to scale up and perhaps make larger boxes, Cebry said it’s difficult to get LED lights now. Most are manufactured in China and Taiwan, where production was slowed due to the pandemic. 74

Thinking Outside of the To-Go Box During the pandemic, local restaurants and catering companies got creative... With many events postponed, several catering companies switched gears and started making family meals to-go. Avenue Foods, Purple Door Catering and Suzy Q’s were all popular choices for families at the height of the pandemic. Purple Door also asked patrons to consider sponsoring a meal for frontline workers, first responders or families for just $10/meal. Suzy Q’s was also able to expand to a new location. One of the new owners of White Hart Café offered to-go meals and also turned the coffee shop into a community kitchen. The restaurant partnered with LOJ Ministries, a local nonprofit, and local churches to prepare hot meals to be distributed to folks in need. The owners of Nomad Coffee launched a spin-off of their business called Nomad Movies, a way to bring a drive-in movie experience to communities as social distancing became a way of life. Mama Crockett’s Cider Donuts food truck began taking orders online, preparing the donuts, and then sliding them through a shoot to protect both their workers and their customers.

LiteSheet also produces LED lighting for a variety of uses from bridges to buildings using alternating current (AC), rather than DC (direct current). Cebry said many components

For example, Cebry said the lights in the Elizabeth River Tunnel failed after two years, but LiteSheet was able to retrofit and replace the lights, which are now so bright drivers don’t have to take their sunglasses off when they enter the tunnel.
La Caretta took advantage of the downtime to tackle some remodeling projects, including one at the Timberlake Road location to provide a larger indoor waiting area that would make customers feel more comfortable. Magnolia Foods on Rivermont Avenue restructured the inside of their eatery into a minigrocery store. Waterstone Pizza also created a small store inside their restaurant on Jefferson Street. The Forest-based Bräuburgers took curbside service to a new level by offering a drive-through. Customers didn’t have to call ahead and could order and receive their food upon arrival. Because of its location not only near Downtown Lynchburg, but overlooking the James River, Kennedy said they hope to bring in businesses that can help use it to expand the “urban hub of Lynchburg.” Establish the New EPIC Center The EPIC (Empowering People Innovation and Commerce) Center is a new facility to be housed in the Lynchburg Regional Business Alliance in Downtown Lynchburg. Its purpose is to provide entrepreneurial support to startups and existing businesses. It will be a coworking space with incubation support services that include legal, funding, and consultative services. Since research points to 80 percent of small businesses failing within the first three years, Kennedy said they hope to use the center to set entrepreneurs up for success. Retain College Students After Graduation With five major colleges and universities located in the area, Kennedy said they are working on several initiatives to familiarize students with
potential job opportunities in the region that will help them call Lynchburg home. Secure Major Expansions or New Companies in the Region Job creation and capital investment have been at the core of the work for the Lynchburg Regional Business Alliance. Kennedy said finding a company that wants to expand to the area, creates more high wage jobs for the region and provides more revenue for localities which can be poured back into schools, parks, and fire and public safety. Secure Additional Air Service Kennedy said most businesses in the Lynchburg Region have voiced their need for more air service through the Lynchburg Regional Airport. Kennedy said they have set their sights on providing air service to Dulles International Airport near Washington, D.C., opening up new opportunities for the region and providing a gateway to an international hub. Small Business Development Center - Lynchburg Region Resources for business in all stages The Virginia Small Business Development Center – Lynchburg Region is located at the Lynchburg Regional Business Alliance office. The SBDC – Lynchburg Region serves the City of Lynchburg, and Amherst, Appomattox, Bedford, and Campbell Counties with expert advisors ready to assist both budding ideas and existing businesses looking to expand. Thanks to funding from the U.S. Small Business Administration and local governments in our region, these services are free to small businesses. Working as part of a network of 29 centers across the Commonwealth, the Virginia SBDC makes it easy for businesses to access advising, training, and business resources on both the local and state level. 78

“We’re here for everyone,” said Stephanie Keener, director of the SBDC – Lynchburg Region. “A lot of folks think of us as a program for start-ups, but we have programs for businesses at any stage such as export support or assessments of your retail space. There are so many resources.” The SBDC – Lynchburg Region has some wonderful success stories. There’s Justin and Ashley Campbell, who opened Vista Fitness 24, Altavista’s only 24-hour gym. Then there’s Nathan Simpson, an Appomattox resident, who founded digital marketing company Colonial Systems while in high school and now holds a government contract for the National Park Service and the Department of Defense. Last month, Colonial Systems, LLC, was awarded a $185,000 prime contract by the U.S. Marine Corps Special Operations Command (MARSOC) to provide video production and creative post-production services. Keener said they never try to squash an idea, but find the best way to execute it. “We want to make sure your idea isn’t a big wobbly thing,” she said. “We’ll help you develop the whole piece. We want entrepreneurs to have a solid plan, and avoid taking out a risky loan or other funding before if they don’t have an understanding of their customer or a plan for marketing.” The SBDC – Lynchburg Region also partners with local resources to develop conferences and events like Create Virginia, a conference focused on arts and creative businesses that takes place at the Academy Center of the Arts. Classes are another great resource offered by the SBDC. The Lynchburg region center will start up a series called Start Smart, which will consist of two-hour classes to help residents get the basics on how to get started. “Start Smart will help people understand if entrepreneurship is right for them,” Keener said.
