UNLOCKING GREATNESS
STUCK IN A RUT?
4 WAYS TO MAKE LASTING LIFE CHANGES Retold By Elisheva Fhima
Mr. Charlie Harary, Esq. is a prolific speaker who has traveled extensively, speaking for organizations, schools, universities, and institutions. His inspirational videos have reached hundreds of thousands of people in over 15 countries. Mr. Harary is the CEO of H3 Capital LLC, a private equity company based in New York. Prior to H3 Capital, Mr. Harary was the First Vice President of Residential Operations and Legal Counsel of RXR Realty, a multi-billion dollar Real Estate Company based in New York. Prior to RXR, Mr. Harary was an associate in Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison and Davis Polk & Wardwell. He received his J.D. from Columbia Law School, where he was awarded the James Kent Scholar and the Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar. Mr. Harary is an Associate Professor of Management and Entrepreneurship at the Sy Syms School of Business at Yeshiva University and a Senior Lecturer for the Orthodox Union, Aish Hatorah, and NCSY. He is the founder and president of Milvado Inc., an organization that aims to teach spirituality in new and relevant ways, as well as a member of the Conference of Young Jewish Presidents. He is a member of the Executive Board of the OU as well as the Founding Chairman of its Young Leadership Cabinet.
In his “Unlocking Greatness” series, Charlie Harary defines the crucial steps to improvement and positive change. Firm habits or strong willpower: Which leads to real change? In this podcast, Harary illuminates a tried and true methodical path to a successful life by sharing four simple ingredients necessary to achieve lasting results.
1. Accept Your Limitations Setting goals and working to achieve them is a part of life. However, it is human nature that despite a solid plan, those goals often fizzle out, unmet. For example, it is common for people to choose a diet plan and commit to healthier choices, only to lose the willpower to see it through. Why is it so difficult to stick to the plan? “Your brain is your brain. Study after study demonstrates the brain’s capacity,” says Harary. “You don’t need more discipline. On the contrary, digging deeper or working harder is not the answer.” According to research, creating a work-around is the best option. Accept the scientific fact that your brain shuts down and may even operate in opposition to the intended plan it helped create. After hours of focus and concentration, one’s mental alacrity and discipline diminish. By recognizing this limitation and weakness of the brain, and fully accepting the parameters of mental stamina, we can be more productive and successful. “The later in the day it is, the less brain power we can access,” says Harary.
“Applying discipline, alone, to a goal is not enough. For instance, if it is dieting or losing weight that is the objective, change your perspective. Think of it as trying to overcome being the person who eats unhealthy to achieve optimum weight or health, instead of just setting out to lose weight,” says Harary. “Before you deal with losing the weight, you have to first deal with the person who eats unhealthy. The goal of a habit is not to ‘do’ something; it is to ‘be’ something. This is what real change is all about. If you can set the stage for who you want to ‘be,’ then you will see real change happen.”
4. Respect Sleep
WILLPOWER ALONE IS NOT ENOUGH. YOU WILL REMAIN STUCK IN UNHEALTHY PATTERNS UNLESS YOU CHANGE YOUR HABITS.
Putting all the tools in place is simply not enough. Instead, you have to go the extra mile to set up structured conditions to bring about success.
2. Create Structure Structure re-wires your mind, with every thought making a connection, and every connection getting stronger and stronger. Willpower alone is not enough. You will remain stuck in unhealthy patterns unless you change your habits. Being disciplined doesn’t change a person or their circumstances, but a structured environment creates real lasting change.
3. Develop Habits Successful people follow a routine. Setting up rituals helps achieve and realize their goals.
8 | THE SHOPPING MAVEN – JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2017
Sleep is not a weakness; it is a necessity. You don’t have to keep going non-stop to succeed at life. Give honor to the rest period. It is an important time to recover, recuperate, decompress, and rejuvenate. Sprinters get more done than marathon runners, because if you are always going—never rest, take time off, or work in cycles—you simply burn out. Go to bed early; take the weekend off. Create an environment of acceptance in which recovery becomes part of your strength and rest becomes purposeful. A mental shutdown is critical for winners because your brain has finite mental discipline. Rituals are veiled ambition and strength. Be consistent with rest periods and they will become habits—this is the way to success. When you use your mind to create habits, eventually it frees your mind from the task of being the disciplinarian. Get to the essence by shifting your inclination as opposed to driving home discipline. Structure and habits condition your mind, so that, over time, it will take less and less discipline and begin to flow naturally.
Conditioning becomes habitual; however you need patience to get to that point. Prioritize. There is a time and a place for everything. When talking to friends on your cell phone competes with playing with your kids, put the phone down and stick to your designated schedule. Constantly checking social media or apps can interrupt time with your spouse; don’t let distractions come between you and your goals. A critical component of success is ritual. Human beings are creatures of habit. Develop a new strategy and understand that discipline alone may move the needle, but it is probably not enough on its own to achieve your goals. Ritual, commitment, and discipline combine to make the successful recipe for lasting life change. MODEST MAVEN
D ress for Your Inner Style BY ROBYN ROZWASKI
Fashion is in Robyn Rozwaski’s DNA. She attended draping and couture sewing classes at F.I.T. and has worked in NYC & London. She decided to obtain her Master’s in Social Work to help design happier people. In her ‘not so free time’ as a working mother to a 7 year old princess, she found her inner fashion voice shouting, “Let’s play dress up!” To fit her schedule, she constructs her sense of style on a small scale with accessories that add a pop of fashion flair. She believes that whatever a woman’s style is, accessories express personality and wrap up a beautiful package. She lives in Passaic with her husband, Mordechai, and daughter Malka Chasida.
T
he temperatures outside are dropping and that’s our cue to layer, cover up, and snuggle in to stay warm. This season’s hottest oversized sweaters, sweatshirts, and coat trends, spoken about in my previous columns, are a welcome addition now that the cold weather has arrived. Fur vests are still a go-to choice for polish and warmth and look perfect with a bow around the neck—my favorite feminine accessory statement—and midi skirt! I saw a friend at a school tea event (where I had my first live show of the “Reish by Robyn” accessory collection) wearing this exact ensemble, which I kvelled over! The winter ambiance has put me in the mood to stay inside, stay warm, and reflect on goals for self-reinvention. The winter months are an opportune time to look inward and work on how to make progress with our interpersonal relationships, creative aspirations, career growth, and overall self-fulfillment. Human beings are deeply complex, with many layers of meaning to our existence. It’s fascinating to contemplate our place in this multi-faceted world that God created. In place of another fashion trend report, I wish to explore whether our style of dress reflects who we are on the inside; that is, within our multi-layered meanings. In Judaism, we are directed to dress tzniusly (modestly) to keep our physical and inner traits sacred; we do this not only so that others can realize the deeper sense of who we are, but also for ourselves. Dressing modestly allows a woman to express who she really is: a precious package and daughter of the King. We’ve all heard fashion clichés such as, “Dress for Success,” but there are other
ashamed of shabby ideas and shabby philosophies…. It would be a sad situation if the wrapper were better than the meat wrapped inside it.” Let’s take the winter months to ask ourselves: Are we aware of our reasons for the fashion selections we make? Do we follow trends blindly? Are we dressing to accentuate our body type? Are we trying to communicate an inner message?
WHEN OUR INNER ESSENCE IS ALIGNED WITH HOW WE ARE DRESSED, WE FEEL A MOOD OR CONFIDENCE BOOST. fashion quotes to be found that look beyond the outer layer of clothing to the person underneath. Mark Twain instructed, “Be careless in your dress if you must, but keep a tidy soul.” Tom Ford advised, “Dressing well is a form of good manners.” “I base most of my fashion sense on what doesn’t itch,” panned Gilda Radner. Lastly, Albert Einstein mused, “If most of us are ashamed of shabby clothes and shoddy furniture, let us be more
12 | THE SHOPPING MAVEN – JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2017
We can start by becoming attuned to how we feel when we get dressed at the beginning of our day. Some women are already in touch with these feelings, but many are not. When our inner essence is aligned with how we are dressed, we feel a mood or confidence boost. Just as color affects mood, so does the way we dress. As a fashion writer, I do not want to leave readers hanging on for the next trend report; rather, I encourage you to get in touch with your inner self and wear it on your sleeve, as they say. If you are someone who likes to follow the fashion trends, enjoy it—although not blindly. In the event your mood is not great one morning, dress up in your favorite ensemble and allow yourself to feel great on the inside too—no matter how cold it is outside! Please catch me on Instagram @ reishbyrobyn. Find your own handmade, one-of-a-kind statement collars, at Reish by Robyn. These stunning pieces are made with leather, lace and semi-precious stones. 4. Building Manipulatives: Our playroom is divided in half. This is our fine motor room. This area is devoted to different types of building toys. Examples include, but are not limited to, Lego, Clics, Magna Tiles, Lincoln Logs, Tinker Toys, ZOOBs, Squigz, and K’nex. Simply suggesting, “Why don’t you build me something fun—surprise me!” usually has them off and creating their next project. They are “building” on those fine motor skills, along with visual motor and imaginative play skills, as part of everyday play! 5. Play Dough and Putty: Another independent activity that our kids love to do throughout the week is to use the various play dough and putty that we have, adjacent to the art supplies in our den. The putty, I have found, is often used as more of a stress buster, while my kids tend to gravitate to the play dough when they want to create something fun and imaginative! Last week, my kitchen was transformed into an ice cream store by my youngest! (For these activities, we have a rule that they need to use these manipulatives at the kitchen table—they can stick to carpet!) 6. Board Games Area: Our kids spend a good part of their mornings (and weekends!) playing board games together (or alone, depending on the activity) for hours! Similar to the art supplies, another part of our den has been set aside for board games. Many board games focus on fine motor and visual motor skills, while focusing on play. Through this set-up, kids can have a degree of ownership over a choice of an activity. Skills are embedded in motivated and joyful play; thus, they are acquired happily and in a manner that fits into everyone’s lifestyle, with minimal fuss and, hopefully, maximal function and smiles!

D’VREI TORAH By Rabbi Dovid Orlofsky; Retold by Elan Perchik
THE BLANK CHECK
When Howard SchultzWent to Israel
Rabbi Dovid Orlofsky is a graduate of Yeshiva Chofetz Chaim in New York and Pressburg Yeshiva in Jerusalem. He is a former regional director for the National Council of Synagogue Youth and is an internationally acclaimed lecturer and educator. Rabbi Orlofsky has published essays and has been quoted in the New York Times, as well as other national publications. 2002, Howard Schultz, chairman and IanCEO of Starbucks, visited Israel. Along with number of other prominent businessmen, he was privileged to have a private audience with Rav Nosson Tzvi Finkel, zt”l, the late Rosh Yeshiva of the Mir. Not knowing anything about Rav Nosson Tzvi at the time, the group was ushered into his study and sat down to wait. When Rav Nosson Tzvi entered the room, the businessmen were surprised to see that he suffered from Parkinson’s disease, and they found it difficult to look at him. Then they heard a bang on the table. “Gentlemen, look at me, and look at me right now,” said Rav Nosson Tzvi firmly. As they sat there mesmerized, the Rosh Yeshiva continued, “Who can tell me what the lesson of the Holocaust is?” The men fumbled to come up with a correct answer.
WHETHER IT IS OUR MONEY, OUR TIME, OR A SIMPLE SMILE, WE ALL HAVE THE ABILITY TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE.
get one, or am I going to pull it toward myself to stay warm?’ It was during this defining moment that we learned the power of the human spirit, because we pushed the blanket to five others.”
“We will never, ever forget?” one man said. Another offered, “We will never, ever again be victims or bystanders!”
Mr. Schultz sums up, “And then the Rosh Yeshiva stood up and said to all of us, ‘Take your blanket. Take it back to America and push it to five other people.’”
But the Rosh Yeshiva had a different answer. As Howard Schultz tells the story, Rav Nosson Tzvi replied as follows: “You guys just don’t get it. Okay, gentlemen, let me tell you the essence of the human spirit. “As you know, during the Holocaust, the people were transported in the worst possible, inhumane way by railcar. They thought they were going to a work camp. We all know they were going to a death camp. After hours and hours in this inhumane corral with no light, no bathroom, cold, they arrived at the camps. The doors were swung wide open and they were blinded by the light. Men were separated from women, mothers from daughters, fathers from sons. They went off to the bunkers to sleep. “As they went into the area to sleep, only one person was given a blanket for every six. The person who received the blanket, when he went to bed, had to decide, ‘Am I going to push the blanket to the other five people who did not
The words of the Rosh Yeshiva hit home and left an indelible impression on all those who were in attendance. But there’s a post-script to this story that not everyone knows about. Rav Nosson Tzvi Finkel’s gabbai (personal attendee) attends my Chumash classes. He told me that Howard Schultz later returned to Israel and went to visit Rav Nosson Tzvi again. During this visit, however, only the Rosh Yeshiva, Howard Schultz, and the gabbai were present.
“That’s right, Rabbi.” Filling the check out for $1,200, Rav Nosson Tzvi handed it back to Howard Schultz and said, “Take this check to that store across the street and tell them that I sent you to purchase a pair of Tefillin. And then put them on every day. That is what you can do for me.” Rav Nosson Tzvi had a blanket called Torah and mitzvos. Instead of looking at Howard Schultz and saying, “What can I get out of him?” he looked at him and said, “What can I do for him?” We all have a blanket that we can push to our fellow brothers and sisters and use to change the world. Whether it is our money, our time, or a simple smile, we all have the ability to make a difference. People may try to convince you otherwise, but it is not true. You can change the world.
Howard Schultz proceeded to take out a blank check, sign his name and hand it to Rav Nosson Tzvi.

“Here, Rabbi,” he said, “fill it out for whatever you want.” At the time, the monthly budget for the Mir Yeshiva was $2 million. Rav Nosson Tzvi was responsible to raise the money despite his debilitating disease. He could have written $2 million on the check.

TSM EXCLUSIVE LIVING THE SINGLE LIFE
SOON BY YOU By Michal Rosenberg Soon By You Photo credits: Abbie Sophia and Judah S. Harris
TAKES A PEEK AT NYC JEWISH DATING SCENE
oon By You, a web series available on YouTube, depicts Jewish, modern orthodox singles living on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. The show follows them as they go out on blind dates, deconstruct those dates with friends, get together for Shabbat meals, and navigate the often rocky landscape that is the dating world.
S
The first episode opens to David, a rabbinical student, rushing to his blind date with Sarah, a painter, with whom he really hits it off, only to realize that he has sat down at the wrong table with the wrong Sarah. He moves tables to meet the correct Sarah (Sarah J.), but she’s not his type, so he spends most of the date loitering near the restroom hoping to talk to the first Sarah (Sarah F.). Antics ensue. And that’s just the first episode. I sat down to speak with Leah Gottfried (Sarah J.), the 25-year-old creator, co-director, co-producer, co-writer, and actor for the hysterical, eerily accurate, and supremely relatable web series. Leah has been acting since she was 8 years old and opened her own production company, Dignity Productions, when she realized she’d rather be behind the scenes than in front of the camera. Leah also gives acting classes to young, religious girls, but Soon By You is her passion project—one that she and her two co-producers, also actors in the series, hope has a very bright future.
Q: What was your inspiration for Soon By You? A: My friends and I have always shared our

Q: What has the audience reaction been since you went public? A: We have fans all over the world! Obviously, those who can most relate to the show are Jewish singles, because this is their life. Some have said that seeing the show makes them feel like they’re not alone; that it’s cathartic seeing dating portrayed this way; that it feels good to laugh at themselves and inject some levity into their situation. But, even people who know nothing about Judaism are connecting with the show. Q: Will there be more episodes? What do you see for the future of the series? A: More episodes depend on more funding! We are currently running a fundraising campaign on Jewcer.org, a crowd-sourcing platform, and anyone who donates can win cool prizes like an invitation to watch a taping, Soon By You t-shirts and posters, even a speaking role on the show! Our goal is $50,000 and we just hit $10,000, so we are on our way! Another source of funding for us has been product placement and advertising. We’ve worked with Shabbat.com, an app that connects users to hosts for Shabbat dinner and also connects singles for dating. We’ve also been partnering with The Navidaters. They are dating coaches and strategists who have a great after-show series on our channel, analyzing the dating choices our characters made and giving general dating advice.

had a premier party. We didn’t know what to expect; we’d never done something like that before. The turnout was incredible! It was so crowded and there was so much laughter, sometimes you couldn’t hear the dialogue. There was a powerful vibe and excitement in the air, and I remember thinking to myself, “Wow! Real people loving and appreciating the show! Amazing!” That was a huge moment for me, when I realized all these people were coming to see the show and see us. And the best part was, it had been mostly word of mouth and the response was the best we’d ever had, even with less press than our previous episodes.

Q: Tell us something special about the show that people may not already know... A: Without giving anything away, I can only
say that Episode 4 will revolve around David and Sarah F. and their date. I can tell you about our cast: Danny Hoffman, who plays David, is actually married in real life. And Sarah Scur, who plays Sarah Feldman, isn’t even Jewish! She’s a Seventh Day Adventist, so she does share some of the guidelines with which we as Jews and actors have to contend. I think our cast is amazing—we have our hero and heroine, the loud over-the-top friend, the quirky roommates, the feminist, the lawyer, the out-of-touch family members— everything you’d find in a real-life group of friends. All of our actors are not only so talented, but really just a nice group of people, and it is a true pleasure working with them.

BULLYING SERIOUS, LASTING PROBLEMS MAY AFFECT CHILDREN WHO ARE BULLIED, BUT ALSO MAY AFFECT THE BULLIES THEMSELVES.
A
ccording to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, school-aged bullying is defined as unwanted, aggressive behavior among fellow students that involves a real or perceived power imbalance. Three main categories of bullying include verbal bullying, social bullying, and physical bullying. Over time, this behavior is repeated or has the potential to be repeated. Serious, lasting problems may affect children who are bullied, but also may affect the bullies themselves.
Children and adolescents who are bullied may face physical injury, social and/ or emotional problems, and even death. They are at increased risk for mental health problems, including depression,
anxiety, headaches, and problems adjusting to school. Bullying also can cause long-term damage to self-esteem. Young bullies, themselves, are at increased risk for substance use, academic problems, and violence to others later in life.

Sometimes, kids may not be open about or report being bullied, so parents should be aware of some of the many common signs: depression; loneliness; anxiety; low self-esteem; headaches; stomachaches; tiredness; poor eating habits; missing school; disliking school; having poorer school performance than previously; self-destructive behaviors, such as
All of this is not to sound over-reactive. However, it is extremely important that we look out for our children’s well-being by both observing possiblenonverbal signals as well as simply talking with them about their day in a manner that will generate the most informative answers—this, of course, will differ from child to child.

Ingredients: • 1 package of small white tortillas (8 per package) • 3 Tbsp of butter, melted • ½ cup of white sugar • 2 Tbsp cinnamon Directions: Take 1 tortilla and warm it in the microwave for 5-10 seconds so it will fold easily. Vitamin E”
WITH RABBI LAZER BRODY
he first snow of the season was falling in North Jersey as a crowd waited patiently inside Keter Torah for an inspirational talk by Rabbi Lazer Brody. Twice a year, the Breslov-inspired rabbi tours North America, along with his opening companion speaker, Yonaton Galed. Both are students of Rav Shalom Arush, a senior Breslov authority in Israel, and the author of best-selling books, including The Garden of Emuna and The Garden of Peace.
T
In addition to translating Rav Arush’s books into English, Rabbi Brody has authored half a dozen self-help books, among them, The Trail to Tranquility and Six Days to the Top. Each book is carefully designed to excite and fortify one’s faith, or, as Rabbi Brody famously calls it, “Vitamin E”—shorthand for Emuna, or trust and communication with Hashem. Born in Washington, DC, in 1949, Rabbi Brody moved to Israel in 1970 to join the Israel Defense Forces. He served in regular and reserve-army combat service for over 19 years and an additional 10 years as a military chaplain. Rabbi Brody is also a certified fitness trainer and health coach. He lives in Ashdod, where every day he relies on peace and a whole lot of Emuna. Rather than merely preach faith, he lives it. This is precisely what makes him a sought-after speaker in an age of terror and uncertainty. The Shopping Maven caught up with Rabbi Brody for an exclusive interview. Rabbi Brody explained, “Hashem has a plan for all of us.” For those in difficult times, with doubts about their marriage or business, Rabbi Brody advised, “If you understood that the universe is designed specifically for you, and you have a unique purpose in the creation, you would not be depressed.” For upper-middle class professionals who seem to have it all, Rabbi Brody offered this piece of advice:
36 | THE SHOPPING MAVEN – JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2017
“HASHEM WANTS US TO HAVE A PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP WITH HIM.” “Sometimes Hashem puts emphasis on the physical, but material emphasis turns often to stress. Their spirituality is suffering from malnutrition; in order for them to have a healthy spirit, they need to have a greater connection to the Almighty. The reason why many so-called successful people seek therapy in the United States is because they don’t get enough Vitamin E, or have enough Emuna.”

His lecture was riddled with humor and insight, but he stressed the need for prayer: “Hashem wants us to have a personal relationship with Him…. An open path of communication, optimally an hour a day; this is what it means to be holistically healthy—body, mind, and soul.” When detailing the specifics of Vitamin E and how to practice it in real life, Rabbi Brody spokea bout the need for a personal connection. He explained that each person should have a unique prayer and meditation in order to connect with God.
“VITAMIN E IS STRENGTHENED WHEN THERE IS AN OPEN PRAYER-PATHWAY BETWEEN A PERSON AND THE CREATOR.”
“Vitamin E is strengthened when there is an open prayer-pathway between a person and the creator,” Rabbi Brody concluded.

The Shopping Maven spoke with some of the guests afterward to see how this subjective topic resonated with the audience. Aaron, from Washington Heights, remarked, “It’s hard to find a leader in America who can offer clarity about a specific situation. A visit from Rabbi Brody from Stael reminds us we are not alone.”
Chana Wold, ecstatic after the talk, told the Shopping Maven, “Lazer Brody reminds us that having faith during the hardships is a muscle— the more I accept the little hardships with love, the more I can feel Hashem intimately in my life. It comes down to choosing to stay in the Emuna state and not let stress overtake you. It’s a choice.”

The next day, Dina, Ashley, and another friend, Casey, were Louisiana bound. The area around Denham Springs was “incredibly destroyed.” “On every single block, on every single day, we saw people trying to preserve their homes,” Dina says. “Outside the homes were piles of furniture, clothing, and so much other stuff waiting to be picked up and carted off—stuff that was just ruined.” When Dina, 28, was growing up in Teaneck, her parents were not enthusiastic about sharing their home with animals. Despite her parents’ attitude, Dina managed to acquire a live-in menagerie which included—not at the same
“Almost every morning we had to find a new route to get to the shelter, because the rain was still coming down at times.” Some lost animals were brought in by people who found them on the side of the road; some were located by rescue teams which went out searching. People also called in to report forlorn looking animals loitering by abandoned homes. The majority of the saved animals were cats and dogs. “[But], even a pig turned up,” says Dina. Dina’s job was to catalog the truckloads of animals that were brought to the shelter every day. Although she was posting information on the computer, the work was very hands on.

Most of them were just scared. We received a couple of calls about aggressive animals, but our ground crew knew the difference between a scared animal and an aggressive animal.” She posted the animals’ data—height, weight, approximate breed, colors, and any identifying marks—on the shelter website. “Some people would call and describe their animal. Sometimes we could say definitely ‘yes, we have your pet,’ and sometimes we needed people to come down with some sort of ID—vet bills or a photo of them with the animal,” Dina says. Was it exhausting? “At some moments there was nothing to do because we were waiting for the ground crew to bring back animals. But most of the time ‘exhaustion’ was not even the right word. Frequently, three trucks filled with animals pulled up at the same time and I would need to tag them, describe them, take them to the vet, and put them in kennels.” The pet-people reunions always re-energized the volunteers. Dina remembers reuniting a grandmotherly type lady and her dog. She came in accompanied by many members of her family; it seemed as if the children and grandchildren were there to support her if she did not find her dog. Every animal that came in received special attention, Dina says. “Animal rescuers have this love for every single animal. We were saving lives, not just animals. The volunteers would not give up. One of them dove into a partially sunken coop to rescue chickens.” Back in Teaneck, Jackie is very proud of Dina’s chesed towards helpless creatures. She is also learning to love dogs, sort of. “I tolerate Kelev. When he jumps on me, I try to remain calm,” she says. There may be some animals that still need homes. Mattress Maven
MEET & GREET By Larry Bernstein
Sleep Factory Outlet Custom-Makes Your Good Night’s Rest mattresses and the ability to choose multiple materials for a truly custom night’s sleep. David explains, “The difference in my mattress and those of my competitors is the guts of the mattress.” He uses high density materials, foams, and good quality merchandise. Plus, his mattresses are two-sided, while many companies today are making one-sided mattresses to save money.
“I look at making a mattress like a painting. Each one is a work of art and is an original; I put a lot of myself into making the mattress.”
leep Factory Outlet, located off of Route 22 in Union, New Jersey, offers a unique shopping experience. Sure, the showroom has the requisite variety of mattresses to choose from, but it also houses the machinery with which to make those mattresses. Store owner, David, has 15 years of experience, which is on display for customers as he crafts his one-of-akind mattresses right before their eyes. When David opened Sleep Factory Outlet 3 years ago, he devoted a large area of the store to equipment so that his customers could watch as he manufactures their made-to-order, dream mattress.
customized based on the individual’s preferences and there are myriad options to be had: Pillow-top, no pillow-top, hard, soft, extra-long, different shapes, etc... Customers can lie down on the mattresses, choose what they like, and tailor their selection.
Manufacturing is a family business for David, and he is very hands-on. Other than hiring delivery men, he does everything himself from purchasing, to accounting, to meeting with customers. However, the focus of his day is making the mattresses, and he takes great pride in it.
David gets all different types of requests from his customers and is happy to oblige. A point of pride—the store has never had a return or even a complaint—which is likely the reason there is a lot of repeat business.
S
“I can make any size or shape. I’ve made extra-long [queen-sized] mattresses for basketball players and mattresses in the shape of a teardrop for a boat.”
David is a master craftsman. “Every mattress in the store is hand-made by me,” says David. Making a mattress can take anywhere from a couple of hours to a couple of days. Whatever type of mattress a client walks out with, it is guaranteed to be of the highest quality. So, what makes Sleep Factory Outlet’s customers so satisfied? Each mattress is

Customers can actually choose to watch David make their mattresses in the store. The store includes a large area for manufacturing in the back and the mattress and furniture showroom in front, so that “customers can see the quality that goes into making the mattress. ”It is very rare for craftsmen to put themselves on display while at work, and it speaks to David’s enthusiasm for his craft as well his devotion to his customers to draw aside the curtain and let everyone have a peek inside. Customer feedback is phenomenal and David is often told that his mattresses are the best they’ve ever had. Sleep Factory Outlet caters to individuals, as well as hotels and institutions. Loyal customers keep coming back, not only for the mattresses, but also for the high-quality furniture on display, including bedroom sets, sofas, and dining room sets, which are in demand. Many customers come for one-stop shopping to purchase mattresses and furniture after buying a new home. Over the course of his time manufacturing mattresses, David has seen the industry lower its standards. Quality has dramatically declined as costs have gone up. While customers are demanding thicker mattresses, companies are meeting that demand without putting in more merchandise. This leads to a poor product. Sleep Factory Outlet refuses to follow this industry trend. The store insists on a high quality product that will give its customers their best sleep ever. hese Quinoa Stuffed Peppers are a colorful, healthy, and yummy food for the freezing days of winter. During the cold months of the year, I really miss the colorful fresh fruits and vegetables of summer. These Quinoa Stuffed Peppers, which are my favorite way to eat quinoa, are a bright and satisfying addition to any weeknight dinner or Shabbos meal. Quinoa was first domesticated around 4,000 years ago by the Incas who lived in the Andes Mountains. They even considered it sacred. Today, most of the quinoa we eat is still grown in South America. One cool fact about quinoa–it’s not a grain. It’s actually a berry. That is why some rabbis hold that quinoa is kosher for Passover. But this recipe is great all year round!
Quinoa Stuffed Peppers Ingredients: 1 ½ cups quinoa 3 cups water 2 yellow peppers 3 orange peppers ¼ cup pine nuts ½ cup chickpeas 1 tsp lemon juice 2 Tbsp chopped parsley 1 ½ cups tomato sauce
Lightly boil quinoa on a medium flame with cover slightly ajar until the little tails of the quinoa come out and the water is completely evaporated. (About 25 minutes.) Cut off the stems of the peppers and scoop out the insides with a spoon, keeping the peppers intact. Steam the peppers until they are cooked but still hold their shape. (About 5 minutes.) In a medium bowl, mix the quinoa, pine nuts, chickpeas, parsley, and lemon juice until combined. Place the peppers, open side up, in a 9x9 pan. Fill the peppers with the quinoa mixture until full. Pour tomato sauce over the peppers. Cover and bake for 25 minutes.
Directions: Preheat oven to 350 F. In a medium pot, rinse quinoa with water, twice. Once you have drained out all of that water, add 3 cups of new water to the pot with the quinoa.

ello my friends, It’s cold outside and we are craving warm comfort food. Here’s a trick to get our comfort food fix while still eating healthfully. One of my healthy cooking secrets is using fruit to sweeten chicken and meat dishes. There hasn’t been white sugar or artificial sweetener in my house for at least 4 years. I do at times use gentle sweeteners, such as honey, 100% maple syrup, or coconut sugar–but even with those, I use less than I used to. Taste buds really do adapt to enjoy meals prepared with minimal to no sugar added. Yes, dried fruits do contain natural sugar, but their natural fiber slows down digestion so that sugar is released more slowly into the blood and generates less of a sugar spike. Apricots have 4.7 grams of fiber per ½ cup, and prunes have 6.2 grams of fiber per ½ cup. Chicken Marbella is absolutely one of my favorite chicken dishes! It contains protein (chicken), healthy fat (olives), and fiber (dried fruit). Serve with a large green salad for a beautiful meal that will tempt your palate and steer you away from sugar-laden duck sauce or Coca-Cola chicken. Traditionally, Chicken Marbella recipes contain 1 cup of sugar. My recipe has none at all and is still delicious!

person’s hands are their independence. The majority of my clients are adults with hand injuries, though I also see pediatric clients in the evenings. These children usually attend private schools, since most private schools do not offer the same services that public schools offer, such as in-school OT/PT and speech therapies. Sometimes, people ask me, “I have pain in my hands. Can therapy help relieve it?” The answer is yes! A common problem I see in many adults is osteoarthritis (OA). This condition can cause pain in the hands as well as swelling and range-of-motion issues. Using different modalities in the clinic, hand therapy can help alleviate this condition tremendously. Modalities are external devices used in a therapeutic setting to relieve pain and swelling and to increase motion in joints. The best thing a client can do is be proactive. As a hand therapist, I teach individuals suffering from rheumatoid arthritis or OA about joint protection, work simplification, and taking safety precautions in the work place and at home. The education aspect of the therapy is most important with clients, because an educated client will be able to partake in his or her own therapy, thereby making it more effective. D’VREI TORAH
W
hen the coldness of winter descends upon us, we need to work harder to find the warmth and the light and wrap ourselves up in it. So too, when we struggle through difficult times and our thoughts are like winter, dark and cold, we have to persevere to find the goodness and light in all of Hashem’s creations and situations, no matter how difficult it may seem! This is our main avoda in this world: To find the positive perspective and trust that Hashem is behind everything, even when circumstances seem cold and bare. Hashem’s light and righteousness permeate all of creation, and it is our job as the Jewish people to be a source of His warmth and light. When we ignite those around us with passion for Torah and chesed, we reveal others’ inner purpose and light as well! Together, we can light the path of ultimate goodness for everyone to see and realize his or her own personal avoda. Many Blessings,
