olice are searching for a man wanted for robbing two livery cab drivers at gunpoint nearly a month apart in Ridgewood and Glendale. According to the cops, in the first incident, the suspect — described as a male, standing 5 feet 9 inches, weighing 170 pounds, and last seen wearing a gray sweatshirt and sunglasses — was picked up by a cab in Forest Hills on Sept. 16 at approximately 6:10 p.m. Upon arriving in front of a home on Linden Street between Seneca and Onderdonk avenues in Ridgewood, cops said, the suspect displayed a black firearm and demanded the 50-year-old male driver’s cellphone, cash and keys. The male took the property and fled the vehicle in an unknown direction. Then, just after 7:35 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 6, the same suspect robbed a cab driver in the vicinity of Cooper Avenue and 80th Street in Glendale, the robber again displayed a black firearm and demanded the 54-year-old female driver’s cash and keys. The suspect fled the cab with the victim’s property and $175. Anyone with information in regards to these incidents is asked to call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline at 800-577-TIPS (8477); All calls and messages will be confidential.

Cops still seek cheapskates who beat up Maspeth diner owners BY ANTHONY GIUDICE AGIUDICE@RIDGEWOODTIMES.COM @A_GIUDICEREPORT

E

ven mobsters paid their check before leaving. Two cheapskates who dined and dashed earlier this month at a Maspeth restaurant — then beat up the eatery’s owners when they tried to collect the bill — remain at large, according to police. The incident took place at 7:50 a.m. on Oct. 1 at the Goodfellas Diner located at 56-26 Maspeth Ave. Formerly known as the Clinton Diner, the restaurant had a starring role in “Goodfellas,” the acclaimed 1989 Martin Scorsese mob film starring Robert DeNiro and Ray Liotta. According to authorities, the two suspects ate breakfast and attempted to leave without paying. When the 70-yearold male owner tried to prevent the pair from leaving the diner, he was punched in the face by one of the suspects. Moments later, the 67-year-old female owner tried to write down the license plate number of the car, law enforcement agents said. The first suspect then snatched the writing pad from her hand and threw her to the ground. He then got into a nearby car with the second suspect, and they fled southbound on Rust Street.

Cops are looking for these two men who didn’t pay their bill and then beat up the owners of Goodfellas Diner in Maspeth. Officers from the 104th Precinct responded; the female owner was removed to an area hospital in serious but stable condition. She suffered a broken arm and a dislocated shoulder. The first individual has been described as a Hispanic male, 25 to 30 years old, weighing 180 pounds, last seen wearing a blue jacket and dark-colored pants. The second suspect is described as a Hispanic male, 25 to 30 years old,

weighing 200 pounds, with a beard, last seen wearing a gray hooded sweater and gray sweatpants. Anyone with information in regards to this incident is asked to call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline at 800-577-TIPS (8477) or for Spanish, 888-57-PISTA (74782). The public can also submit their tips by logging onto the Crime Stoppers website or by texting their tips to 274637 (CRIMES) then enter TIP577. All calls and messages are kept confidential.

Precinct commander outlines security plans for Maspeth hotel where homeless are housed BY ANTHONY GIUDICE AGIUDICE@RIDGEWOODTIMES.COM @A_GIUDICEREPORT

S

ince the city brought in 20 homeless men to live at the Holiday Inn Express in Maspeth on Monday, Oct. 10 — with the possibility of more coming in the future — residents have reiterated their concerns over safety and security at the hotel. Captain Mark Wachter, commanding officer of the 104th Precinct, eased some of those concerns at Tuesday night’s Precinct Community Council meeting at St. Margaret Parish Hall in Middle Village where he laid out his current security plan regarding the shelter. “At one of the first community meetings I spoke at, people weren’t happy that I had a plan,” Wachter said. “But how I look at is, I’d rather have a plan if something happens and if I don’t have a plan and something happens, guess what, I’m going to be scrambling trying to get a plan. So I’d rather sit down and get a security plan. But obviously that security plan is not in effect because the shelter is not fully staffed.” The current plan for the hotel is to rent out 30 rooms, two of which will be used

residents staying at the hotel. Acacia Network, the group that runs the shelter, has their own security to make sure there are no problems with the homeless as well. The hotel also has security guards on-site, Wachter noted. The 104th Precinct has two officers visit the hotel three to four times per day, Wachter said. “Their job is basically to [liaise] with the Holiday Inn staff, DHS and Acacia security to make sure nothing goes wrong,” he added. “I understand the concerns of the community, and my job is to ensure the safety of the 170,000 residents that live in this precinct and to ensure the safety of any hotel guests that go there.” Wacther confirmed that the NYPD does not have officers stationed at the hotel, and they are not going to. Police officers will be used to make sure no crime takes place inside the hotel or outside of it, not to patrol the hotel. If the hotel does turn into a full shelter, Wachter’s security plan will go into effect, which includes increased DHS police, security and more security measures such as identification cards to get in and out of the shelter.

Maspeth resident fumes over bioswale put in front of her home with no notice BY ANTHONY GIUDICE AGIUDICE@RIDGEWOODTIMES.COM @A_GIUDICEREPORT

T

his lady can’t seem to catch a break — unless it is in her sidewalk. Jeanette Romano, a resident of Maspeth, is irate at the city for installing a bioswale in front of her home on 60th Drive, with absolutely no notification. Not only that, she says the workers left a mess and damaged her sidewalk. A bioswale is a curbside garden designed to collect rainwater to prevent it from going into the already taxed sewer system, and sending combined sewer overflow (CSO) into Newtown Creek during periods of heavy rainfall. Now, Romano is left with a gaping hole in her sidewalk until the city comes and finishes the job. “They started installing [the bioswale] a few weeks ago and they never notified me that they were going to do that,” Romano said. “That’s going to be a garbage collector, that’s what that is going to be. Then who is going to clean it? The city is going to clean it, or we’re going to have to clean it, the owners of the two houses?” Garbage has already begun to pile up inside the hole in front of her home. Besides the garbage, Romano found a yellow streak across her sidewalk that

Jeanette Romano outside of her Maspeth home in front of the bioswale the city is installing without notifying her. she says was created by the city employees while working on the bioswale. This isn’t the first time that Romano has had problems with the city making changes to her sidewalk.

Several years ago, Romano said she and her husband received a notice from the city alerting them to cracks in their sidewalk, which they had to get repaired. They made the repairs and a

year later the city came and broke up their sidewalk and planted a tree, leaving the sidewalk with several cracks. Romano spent $750 on a private contractor to come and fix the cracks in the sidewalk left by the city. “Then I got a contractor to come and straighten out all the cracks,” Romano said. “The tree died after I put all the bricks in and they come and rip all the bricks up and put another tree in there.” The city then broke up more of the sidewalk in front of Romano’s home to install the bioswale. “I spent all that money to fix the concrete and they destroyed it three times,” Romano said. “I’m just so upset; it’s so disgusting out there. You don’t do that. You don’t just rip someone’s concrete up.” Romano may have some hope, if she follows the lead of some Bayside residents who do not want to see these bioswales in front of their homes. These residents have put up a fight against the city installing the bioswales without notification to the homeowner. With help from state Senator Tony Avella, residents can sign a petition on his website that notifies the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) about their decision to opt out of receiving a bioswale.

Radioactive Ridgewood site added to state Superfund list BY ANTHONY GIUDICE AGIUDICE@RIDGEWOODTIMES.COM @A_GUIDICEREPORT

radioactive, former industrial site on the Ridgewood/Bushwick border that’s already part of the federal Superfund program was recently been added to the state’s Superfund initiative, the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) announced. Recent investigations by city, state and federal agencies at the former Wolff-Alport Chemical Company site, located at 1125 to 1139 Irving Ave. and 1514 Cooper Ave. in Ridgewood, detected radioactivity above background levels within sections of the on-site buildings, the soil beneath and around the facility, and above the area’s adjacent sidewalks, streets and sewers. As of Oct. 6, the Wolff-Alport Chemical Company site was added to DEC’s Registry of Inactive Hazardous Waste Disposal Sites as a Class 2 site that presents a significant threat to public health and/or the environment. According to the federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), during a 2009-2010 investigation by the New York City Department of Design and Construction (DDC), it was found that

“visibly contaminated soil is typically located within the top 4 feet under the pavement/ground surface; there is one area where the visibly contaminated soil is approximately 8 to 10 feet deep.” In more recent years, a study found that radioactivity levels were found in the sewer system nearly a quarter mile away from the site. The EPA further states that in 2013, “an investigation performed on behalf of the New York City Department of Environmental Protection [DEP] detected radiological constituents above background concentrations in the sewer system at least as far away as the intersection of Irving Avenue and Halsey Street, approximately 1/4 mile away from the site.” On May 12, 2014, the site was added to the National Priorities List. According to the DEC, the Wolff-Alport site is contaminated with radioactive thorium-232 and radon-220 — which is a key component of the thorium-232 decay series and is a radioactive gas commonly referred to as thoron — which emanates from surfaces where thorium-232 is present. MASPETH SHELTER WAR

Queens rallies in Brooklyn against homeless shelter plans BY JAIME DEJESUS EDITORIAL@QNS.COM @QNS

T

hey want answers. A rally was held by a group of organizations from several boroughs, including Brooklyn and Queens, outside four different hotels in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, that have been converted into homeless shelters to shine a light on and hopefully put a stop to a practice that some residents fear endangers the neighborhoods they call home. More than 200 people attended the rally on Saturday, Oct. 15, which began at 24th Street and Fourth Avenue. “We’renotheretoprotestthehomeless,”said attorneyDelvisValdesfromVillageofSunset Park. “We’re not here against the residents of thisshelter. We’reheretohelptheresidentsof theshelter.Wewantpermanentsolutionsfor these folks. We want them to get the help and assistance they need. We don’t want to stick theminahotelandforgetaboutthem.” Phil Wong of civic group Elmhurst United also spoke during the rally. “Just like our friends from Maspeth, we are here from Elmhurst and we are here to fight the same battle right here in Sunset Park,” he said, standing in front of one of Sunset’s hotels. “The rooms behind me cost $160 per night. You do the math and it’s $4,800 per month per room. Meanwhile you look at Craigslist and there hundreds of apartments for rent around here at one-third the cost.”

Photos by John Calabrese

Rally held outside Sunset hotels housing homeless. Wong suggested that by declaring an emergency, Mayor Bill de Blasio and the Department of Homeless Services (DHS) get to bypass public review. “They move people in during the middle of the night,” he said. “As of August 2015, there were 2,342 vacant apartments in the NYCHA system. They’re waiting for money to renovate these apartments so people can move in. Where is the funding? It all went to DHS. It didn’t go to NYCHA. So this homeless crisis is intentional. It’s all for profit and is a business.” Maspeth resident Mike Papa blamed the mayor and Commissioner of the New York City Human Resources Administration/Department of Social Services Steven Banks for trying to blame the community. “Mr. de Blasio is trying to villainize us in order to cover up his

administration’s wrongdoings and shortcomings regarding the homeless situation. The residents of Maspeth are not NIMBYs [not in my backyard]. We always will do what we can to help them but that does not include destroying the community that we live in.” Anti-crime activist, founder and CEO of the Guardian Angels Curtis Sliwa also pinned much of the blame for the homeless situation on the mayor. “Whether from Maspeth, Sunset Park, or more than 30 other communities that have been so affected, this is not about taking care of homeless people, emotionally disturbed people,” he said. “His idea isn’t to take care of them or provide service, to get them medical or mental health care. His idea is to warehouse them off the street so

he can bamboozle all of us, telling us he’s dealt with the homeless situation which he has been in denial of.” “This administration believes that every community must share responsibility in housing homeless New Yorkers, and because the most effective tool against homelessness is preventing it in the first place, we’ve increased the number of tenants who’ve avoided eviction by 24 percent,” responded Aja Worthy-Davis, a spokesperson for the mayor in a statement. “An additional 45,000 residents have either exited or avoided shelter through our programs, and we’re building new affordable apartments in Sunset Park such as the Sunset Park Library project through partnerships with local elected officials.”

Fears that this East Elmhurst hotel may be next shelter BY ANGELA MATUA AMATUA@QNS.COM/@ANGELAMATUA

L

awmakers in northwest Queens are concerned that yet another hotel, this one in East Elmhurst, could be converted by the city into a homeless shelter. Congressman Joseph Crowley, state Senator Jose Peralta and Assemblyman Francisco Moya said on Monday that a 288-room Courtyard by Marriott located at 90-10 Ditmars Blvd. “has potentially been slated to house a population of up to 60 homeless single men.” East Elmhurst residents told lawmakers that they heard rumors about the possible conversion of the Marriott and wanted transparency from the Department of Homeless Services (DHS). The hotel would purportedly act as a transitional home for employed men looking to get permanent housing. Last month, lawmakers found out that DHS was using a Holiday Inn Express at 113-10 Horace Harding Expwy. in Corona to house homeless

Photo via Google Maps

families. The city agency began renting out rooms without notifying local residents, Crowley, Peralta or Moya. Constituents noticed families being moved into the Holiday Inn Express and notified their elected officials, according to a spokesperson for Peralta. “While our communities remain very sympathetic to the ongoing issue of homelessness in New York, it is true that we have already carried our fair share of this problem by hosting no less than five shelters in our neighborhoods,” they said in a

statement. “We will fiercely continue in our opposition to additional shelter facilities within the area. The Courtyard by Marriott is located right across from the Grand Central Parkway and LaGuardia Airport. However, DHS spokesperson Lauren Gray said that DHS has no plans to rent out rooms or convert this hotel into a homeless shelter. “There are currently no plans to convert this hotel into a shelter or to temporarily rent rooms to help meet our legal and moral obligation

to shelter homeless New Yorkers,” Gray said. “We do have an open-ended RFP and are always looking to review strong proposals, but the Department of Homeless Services has not received a proposal for this location.” The request for proposals are not site specific and DHS looks at any site. When reached by phone, the hotel manager, who only said his name was Amr, said DHS did not reach out to the hotel with any request to rent rooms for homeless people. Grace Lawrence, a Corona resident who used to be president of the East Elmhurst-Corona Civic Association for more than 10 years, said East Elmhurst is not the right place for a homeless shelter. “When you begin to bring the homeless shelter, you’re bringing people from all kinds of backgrounds. That’s the reason why they’re alarmed,” Lawrence said. “People there have nice homes and they feel pretty secure there. We sure do not need any shelters.”

with a Shih Tzu. The dog had been found on an Elmhurst street and Payano took Ling Ling to a vet to see if she was microchipped. Luckily, the dog’s owner, Ms. Bell, had microchipped the dog before she was stolen. Payano was able to reach out to Bell, who drove down to the 110th Precinct headquarters at 94-41 43rd Ave. in Elmhurst to be reunited with her dog. “She called the phone number on file and the owner was very surprised to hear that her dog was found

because she believed it was stolen from her yard 2 1/2 years ago,” said Police Officer Janine Rivera of the 110th Precinct Community Affairs

Unit. “She lives in Pennsylvania and came right away to pick the dog up. She was very happy and grateful to get the dog back.”

32-year-old woman in his southwestern Queens home. Gregory Talley, 50, was arrested at about 5:15 a.m. Sunday morning at his home on Rockaway Boulevard, shortly after the attack took place.

Law enforcement sources said that Talley allegedly sexually assaulted a 32-year-old woman inside the residence moments before police arrived on scene. The victim was known to Talley, but sources declined to reveal their relationship.

The victim was taken to a local hospital for treatment of her injuries. Following a preliminary investigation, Talley was taken into custody on charges of first-degree rape and sexual misconduct. Check with QNS later for additional details about the case.

EDITORIAL

Queens loses trust in city on shelters M ayor Bill de Blasio announced last week that the city was no longer considering a plan to transform the Holiday Inn Express on 55th Road in Maspeth into a homeless shelter for adults. However, the city agreed to rent rooms at the hotel to house 30 homeless men for an indefinite period. In the end, this was neither a victory for the community nor a defeat for the city. Homeless residents are now living at the hotel, and the city continues its boneheaded, tone deaf policy of housing homeless people in whatever hotel space it can find. Even the way they brought homeless men to the Holiday Inn Express showed the city has learned nothing from this months-long saga. As in previous cases where the city housed the homeless at Queens hotels, no one in the community knew the homeless were coming until they checked in. The de Blasio administration does itself no favors. The mayor talks about fulfilling the city’s legal obligation to the homeless. We understand that obligation. But why can’t he fulfill

this obligation in an honest way that doesn’t leave us all feeling like fools? It’s probably true that a faction of Queens residents would protest homeless shelters in their community even if the city provided them a modicum of advanced notice. The fact the city just goes along and does it without consulting the community first, however, reinforces a common notion that City Hall just doesn’t care what the people of Queens think, will do whatever it wants and, therefore, can’t be trusted. The past is prologue here. The Pan American hotel in Elmhurst became an emergency homeless shelter in June 2014 after the city had initially ruled it out as a viable site; within weeks, the city did a complete aboutface, not only housing homeless residents there, but also making plans to convert the hotel into a permanent shelter. It’s hard to believe the Maspeth Holiday Inn won’t follow the same path. All the while, our elected officials have advised, and continue to advise the city to seek another way forward toward addressing the exploding homeless population.

There has been talked about expanding housing subsidies, building more affordable housing, repurposing foreclosed homes, even creating modular homes on vacant land to quickly house residents. These are novel ideas, but why is the city dragging its feet to adopt them? We agree with our lawmakers that the city is moving way too slowly

when it comes to finding permanent solutions to homelessness. We repeat again that repurposing hotels as homeless shelters — though the city says it fulfills its legal obligation to the homeless — is a betrayal of the larger moral obligation that our government has to serve those with the least.

CALL FOR A LEADER BY CONGRESSMAN STEVE ISRAEL

W

e live in a time of unprecedented insecurity about our future. I hear about it no matter what community I visit — from Roslyn to Smithtown to Whitestone. Parents are worried about their children, and it doesn’t help when they turn on the TV and see beheadings in the Middle East, mass shootings in California and Florida and even pipe bombs much closer to home in Manhattan. As we cast our ballots in less than a month for president, it is more important than ever that we have a commander in chief who is up to the task and who can protect us from these unprecedented threats. Hillary Clinton is the right choice and the only candidate in this race who is fit to serve. I’ve seen Hillary in action, and she brings with her a long resume of experience. As a New York senator, she stepped up after we dealt with the worst U.S. terrorist attack on American soil by securing $21 million in federal aid to help us rebuild. She saw the devastation our community faced and fought to ensure we could move forward and rebuild. As secretary of state, she worked tirelessly to build and strengthen U.S. relationships around the world, especially with Israel. She has repeatedly proven herself as a staunch supporter and friend of the State of Israel, and has fostered unprecedented security cooperation between our two nations. In 2012, she personally negotiated a ceasefire in Gaza and helped put an end to Hamas rocket attacks raining

down on Israel. She worked to build stronger Israeli defense programs, including upgrading the Iron Dome rocket defense system that continues to save countless lives. And under her leadership, the State Department reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to preserving Israel’s qualitative military edge by requesting a 20 percent increase in assistance for Israel every year. Hillary also knows how real the danger of a nuclear Iran could be. That is why she helped impose the harshest sanctions on Iran in history and has vowed to develop a broader strategy to block Iran’s pathway to a nuclear weapon. As president, she will hold Iran accountable for any violations, including its support of terrorism, and will not hesitate to take military action if Iran chooses to pursue developing a nuclear bomb. The choice is clear — with Hillary Clinton as our next commander in chief, the United States, our allies, and the entire world will be safer place. We cannot afford a hot-headed, unstable and dangerous leader sitting in the Oval Office. Hillary Clinton has fought her entire life to protect Americans and strengthen our relationships around the world, and she will work every day to continue that mission. We are a stronger, smarter and more secure world with Hillary Clinton as president. Congressman Steve Israel represents the Third Congressional District that includes northeast Queens, northern Nassau and northwest Suffolk counties. He is retiring from office at the end of his current term.

ModernMD Urgent Care opens Bushwick center

M

odernMD Urgent Care celebrated the grand opening of its fifth Brooklyn location last weekend when it held a grand opening of its newest urgent care center at 366 Knickerbocker Ave. in Bushwick on Saturday, Oct. 15. It was a fun-filled event with games, prizes, face painting and balloon art for kids, live Latin music, and free blood pressure screenings for

everyone who stopped in. The ModernMD staff was even handing out pieces of cake as they offered tours of their state-of-the-art center. All of ModernMD’s centers, including their newest site in Bushwick, were specifically placed in areas where the community is underserved by primary care physicians. “Each of our five centers is located in a federally designated primary care shortage area, also known as a Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA),” said Melissa Cohen, vice president of marketing and business growth for

ModernMD. “We have chosen to locate each of our five centers in an HPSA intentionally, as it is ModernMD’s mission to equalize access to high-quality healthcare that is not only quick and convenient, but affordable.” As an urgent care center, ModernMD is dedicated to helping treat non-emergency, non-life-threatening conditions including fevers, flu or cold symptoms, sprains of broken bones, seasonal allergies and others. They centers also provide X-rays and lab testing for patients. “When we came into the neighborhood and started building out, we thought it was exactly the right thing to do because we had a lot of inquiries about it, and everybody that we spoke with said that we need not only a medical facility here, but a beautiful

facility,” said Thomas Byers, CEO of ModernMD. “There are very good doctors in the area, but there’s a lot of people in the area, and it is hard to get in and make an appointment and a lot of the residents use the emergency room as their primary care physician.” ModernMD is able to accommodate up to 75 patients each day at their centers while keeping wait times relatively short. They accept all insurances — including Medicare and Medicaid — and there is no need to make an appointment in order to be seen. There is a board-certified physician on staff at each of the centers who is certified in family medicine, general medicine or emergency medicine. ModernMD is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekends.

ARTS & LEISURE

GET INTO THE HALLOWEEN SPIRIT WITH THESE FIVE AWESOME AUTUMN EVENTS Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for children aged 4 to 11, and free for children under 3 years old.

PUMPKIN CHUCKING – NEW YORK HALL OF SCIENCE, CORONA

Dates: Oct. 22, 2:30 p.m.; Oct. 30, 1 p.m. Why did the scientist throw a pumpkin out the window? Wait, that’s not how the joke goes. But the sentiment is the same at New York Hall of Science because they’ll be launching pumpkins out of a catapult, all in the name of science and fun. This event is free with museum admission.

alloween is coming up, what are you doing to celebrate? Because Halloween falls on a Monday this year, it can be hard to join in the fun on the actual date because it’s on a work/school day. Have no fear (or maybe little bit of fear); we’ve found five fun and spooky events leading up to Halloween that will get you into the spirit of the holiday.

THE AMAZING MAIZE MAZE – QUEENS COUNTY FARM MUSEUM, FLORAL PARK

Dates: Oct. 22-23, 29-30, 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Fun for all ages, kids and adults alike will have a blast finding their way out of this 3-acre corn maze. Find clues, solve puzzles and find your way out of the maze. Feel up for the challenge? The maze will be open until 9 p.m. on Oct. 22, so you can navigate the maze under the starry night sky (or by flashlight).

FORT TOTTEN PARK HAUNTED LANTERN TOUR – FORT TOTTEN PARK, BAYSIDE

Date: Friday, Oct. 28, 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Leave your fears at home! Led by Urban Park Rangers with lanterns, take a tour through Fort Totten Park’s historic Water Battery as it is transformed into a “haunted house.” The battery was once a former fortress that guarded New York Harbor during the Civil War, so who knows what historical spirits might show up. This event is free to the public.

HALLOWEEN HARVEST FESTIVAL – SOCRATES SCULPTURE PARK, LONG ISLAND CITY

Date: Saturday, Oct. 29, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Come one, come all! It’s time again for the annual Halloween Ha r vest Festiv a l at So c rates Sculpture Park. This year there is a circus theme, so visitors can enjoy costume-crafting as well as jugglers, stilt-walkers and a special circus performance by Circus Amok. Be sure to stick around and watch local dogs strut their stuff in the Annual Canine Costume Contest. This event is free to the public. If you want to experience something truly terrifying (or maybe not so much), check out the park’s monuments to Queens native Christopher Walken, on display through next March.

SHOCKTOBERFEST – FLUSHING MEADOWS CORONA PARK, CORONA

Date: Sunday, Oct. 30, noon to 3 p.m. A fun event for the whole family, Shocktoberfest has something for ever ybody. Head into t he pumpkin patch and pick out a nice pumpkin, jump in the inflatable playg round, play games, ma ke crafts and more! This event is free to the public.

Netflix’s ‘Master of None’ films at Maspeth’s Goodfellas Diner BY ANTHONY GIUDICE AGIUDICE@RIDGEWOODTIMES.COM @A_GIUDICEREPORT

T

he award-winning Netflix comedy “Master of None,” starring Aziz Ansari, filmed scenes for its upcoming second season inside of Maspeth‘s Goodfellas Diner on Tuesday, Oct. 18. According to the Mayor’s Office of Film, Theater and Broadcasting, the shoot took place inside the diner, located at 56-26 Maspeth Ave., from 6 to 11:30 a.m., with interior dialogue scenes taking place from 7 to 10:15 a.m. and an exterior establishing shot from 10:15 to 10:30 a.m. Season two of “Master of None” is set to premiere on Netflix in April 2017.

The show follows Dev — played by Ansari — and his friends as they try to maneuver through life and relationships in New York City. “Master of None” joins films such as “Goodfellas,” “You Don’t Know Jack,” and more recently a remake of the 1979 comedy “Going in Style,” starring Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine and Alan Arkin, to be filmed at the famous diner. Goodfellas Diner made some bad news earlier this month after two individuals beat up the diner’s elderly owners as they left the eatery without paying for their breakfast.

he enormous, 3,000-seat Christian Cultural Center in East New York, near Starrett City – a stunning and elegant mega church with 40,000 congregants – was the site of Brooklyn DA Ken Thompson’s “homecoming” service. Each seat was filled as the beloved DA was remembered after losing his fight with colorectal cancer, remarkably leaving his position only a week ago. I was privileged to be one of those people who felt a need to support his wife Lu-Shawn and bid goodbye to this man who, in his brief 50 years, impacted so many lives as a father, son, lawyer and then DA of Kings County, a journey he shared with his beloved wife of 17 years Lu-Shawn and children Kennedy and Kenny. I watched the steady flow for hours as people lined up to pay their respects and pass the open coffin before the service began. Remarkably, in his less than three years as DA (he had an upset victory over the prior Brooklyn DA, Joe Hynes, who had held the seat for decades), his office had a major impact on

Governor Cuomo joined in bidding farewell to the DA along with the mayor and wife Chirlane McCray. As pictured, behind him pictures of the DA and his family were flashed continuously during the moving funeral service. righting the record for many people who were wrongfully convicted. “What he did in a short time showed how committed he was to Brooklyn,” said former Bronx DA Robert Johnson. One of greatest accomplishments was the creation of the Conviction Review Unit which exonerated 21 people in just a little over two years. Among those who spoke at the service was Nafissatou Diallo, who had claimed that she had been raped by French politician Dominique StraussKahn, a powerful international guest of the hotel where she worked. With tears flowing down her cheeks,

sobbing between her words, she told of Thompson’s belief in her and his giving back her life. She was not the only person to speak of the difference that the late DA had made in their lives; one of the men freed also shared his heartfelt gratitude to the DA. I loved the words of his chief of staff Wayne Williams who has been the “Rock of Gibraltar” to Lu-Shawn. Marty Markowitz, the former Brooklyn borough president, spoke from the stage, telling Lu-Shawn about her husband’s undying love and devotion to her. He also shared how he had lost his father when he was only 9, but

had great quality of time with him, and that was as important as the quantity of years. Many people noted that Ken’s mom Clara had been an inspiration to him. She was one of the first female NYPD officers to patrol the streets beginning in 1973 and served the department for 21 years. She and her husband and two surviving children stood and greeted thousands of people for hours. The family had been by his side at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center when he died, and asked for donations to that institution if anyone wants to pay tribute to him. Rows were filled with community and political leaders, and the funeral held the next day drew Governor Cuomo and Mayor de Blasio and his wife Chirlane. The mayor shared the feelings of all touched by the DA. “With a life and promise cut far too short,” he said, “our city was blessed with a glimpse of Ken’s unwavering commitment to justice and his unrivaled pursuit of a more fair system for all those he served.” The beautiful music and songs of faith helped lift my spirits as I know how the hole in the heart of Lu-Shawn will remain with her forever. May she find the courage to carry on, having had the undying love of an extraordinary man. Our media company will be creating an annual Ken Thompson Memorial Community Service Award beginning at our Kings of Kings event on Nov. 17. May he rest in peace.

OUR NEIGHBORHOOD: THE WAY IT WAS

JFK’s campaign stop in Rego Park

Senator John F. Kennedy rides in a motorcade along Queens Boulevard in Rego Park on Nov. 5, 1960, three days before he was elected president.

I

n just a few weeks, residents across our neighborhood will head to the polls to cast their vote in a presidential election that, for many, cannot come soon enough. For most of the campaign, the attention of the two candidates have been squarely placed on those “swing states” like Iowa and New Hampshire, Ohio and Florida, Pennsylvania and North Carolina. It’s been this way for the past few presidential elections, as it seems just about 10 or more states have a say in the outcome, while the rest of the states are “solidly” divided between Republican red and Democratic blue. But you don’t have to flip that far back through the pages of our history to find a moment in time when our borough played a pivotal role in a presidential campaign. In fact, Queens was a major campaign stop in the waning days of one of the closest presidential races in American history. Three days before the 1960 election, a cool, rainy Saturday afternoon in Queens, hundreds of people lined up along Queens Boulevard in Rego Park to get a glimpse of Senator John F. Kennedy, the young Democratic senator from Massachusetts challenging Republican Vice President Richard Nixon. In searching YouTube, we were able to find color film footage of Kennedy’s Nov. 5 visit to the Boulevard Restaurant, which was located at the corner of Queens Boulevard and 63rd Drive. Uploaded by Jay Margolis, the two-minute video shows Senator Kennedy in a dark overcoat standing in a slow-moving convertible, surrounded by police motorcycles cruising along Queens Boulevard, waving to the crowd as he approached the diner.

Photo via Wikimedia Commons

President John F. Kennedy To our younger readers, it might seem odd that a Democratic presidential candidate would visit Queens so close to an election; New York, after all, is considered a “blue state” that last went for a Republican presidential candidate in 1984, when President Ronald Reagan and Vice President George H.W. Bush trounced the Democratic ticket of former Vice President Walter Mondale and Queens Congresswoman Geraldine Ferraro, who of course was the first female vice presidential nominee for a major political party.

New York, however, was up for grabs 56 years ago, and the race between Kennedy and Nixon was incredibly tight. Every electoral vote in every corner of the country was important, and New York was not an

automatic blue state back then; after all, the Empire State and its 45 electoral votes went the previous two elections to Republican Dwight Eisenhower, the legendary World War II general who won the presidency in 1952 and was re-elected in 1956. As it happened, this was JFK’s second visit to Queens in less than two weeks. He came to Sunnyside Gardens Arena on Oct. 27 and spoke to a huge crowd. There he expressed his desire to see Queens go to a Democratic presidential candidate for the first time in 24 years. Shortly after arriving at the Boulevard Restaurant on Nov. 5, Kennedy addressed the crowd and noted that Queens “has not been known as the strongest Democratic county up until this year.” He then outlined some of the many issues he would seek to address if elected, and these issues which (not surprisingly) remain critical to this day: boosting the minimum wage, reforming Social Security, improving housing. The young senator also stressed the importance of creating “a strong and vital society here in the United States” in order to properly defend freedom abroad at the height of the Cold War. “To be respected abroad, we must build the kind of society in this country that commands respect, that gives every citizen an opportunity to develop his or her talent, depending on their skill and their desire to serve,” Kennedy said. “I come here today to Queens and ask your help in moving this country forward in building our strength, in building our influence abroad, in identifying ourselves once again as the great defender of freedom at a time when freedom is under attack all over the globe. In short, I come to Queens in the State of New York, in the United States of America, and ask your help.” Three days later, on Nov. 8, 1960, Queens would help deliver New York and its 49 electoral votes to Kennedy, who narrowly defeated Nixon in both the electoral and popular votes. Check out the YouTube video of JFK’s visit by visiting https://www. youtube.com/watch?v=0DnJ3a-tjBk.

TO AN THER The Management and staff of Morton Funeral Home/ Ridgewood Chapels is proud to announce the affiliation of Robert A. Taylor Jr. with our firm after the closure of the Peter J. Geis Funeral Home. For more than a century, both of our firms have served the greater Ridgewood area with reverence, respect and a commitment to dignified personal service. Joseph Suozzi, father of Congressional candidate Tom Suozzi, dies at the age of 95 BY THE RIDGEWOOD TIMES STAFF EDITORIAL@QNS.COM @QNS

R

etired Judge Joseph Suozzi, whose son, Tom, is currently running to represent northeast Queens in Congress, has died. Joseph Suozzi, 95, succumbed to natural causes on Oct. 16, Newsday reported. He made history in November 1949 when, at the age of 28, he became the youngest elected or appointed judge in the United States in becoming a city court judge for Glen Cove in Nassau County. A native of Potenza, Italy, Judge Suozzi immigrated to the U.S. with his mother in 1925. He attended school in Glen Cove and Oyster Bay and served as a member of the U.S. Air Force during World War II. Following the war, Judge Suozzi attended Harvard Law School and eventually was admitted to practice law in New York State, joining as a partner at a law firm in Glen Cove. After serving on the Glen Cove bench for six years, the judge

stepped down in September 1955 to run for mayor of Glen Cove, a pursuit that proved successful. Joseph Suozzi served as Glen Cove mayor from 1956 to 1960, then returned to the courts in 1961 af ter being elected to a 14-year term as a New York State Supreme Court justice. After being re-elected to the Supreme Court, Judge Suozzi was appointed by then-Governor Hugh Carey in 1976 as an associate justice for the Appellate Division, Second Department. He resigned the bench four years later to return to private practice as a senior partner with the Meyer, Suozzi, English & Klein law firm. His son, Tom, followed some of his father’s footsteps, having served as Glen Cove mayor. In 2001, Tom Suozzi was elected Nassau County executive, a position he would hold for eight years. He is presently campaigning to succeed the outgoing Congressman Steve Israel as representative of the Third Cong ressional District, which

Six Queens neighborhoods included in list of priciest city home sales BY ANGELA MATUA AMATUA@QNS.COM @ANGELAMATUA

T

hough Queens does not dominate the list, six neighborhoods in the borough are among the priciest in terms of median sales price for single-family homes, condos and co-ops. PropertyShark released a list on Oct. 11 of the top 50 priciest neighborhoods after analyzing the median sales price in four boroughs. At 11, Forest Hills Gardens surprisingly beat out Manhattan neighborhoods like the Theater District, the Upper West Side and the Financial District. The median sales price for a home between July and September 2016 was $1,562,500, which is actually a 6 percent decrease from the same time last year, according to the study. The Hunters Point section of Long Island City was 33rd on the list, with the median sales price coming in at

$946,973. This marks an 18 percent increase in median sales price during the same time last year. The study found that 73 sales transactions were made since last year compared to only 12 in Forest Hills Gardens. PropertyShark splits Flushing into several neighborhoods including Kissena Park, Broadway-Flushing and Queensboro Hill. These neighborhoods were 38th, 42nd and 43rd on the list, respectively. Kissena Park, an area that is bordered by Kissena Boulevard, 46th Avenue and Utopia Parkway, saw a 5 percent increase in median sales price since last year. The median sales price hit $865,000 and 13 sales transactions were made there. Broadway-Flushing, a small parcel bordered by 155th Street, Crocheron Avenue, 29th Avenue and 170th Street saw a 6 percent decrease in median sales price since last year and the median price for a home there costs $847,500.

Photo via Flickr Creative Commons/Peter Dutton

Forest Hills Gardens was near the top of the list of priciest neighborhoods in terms of home sales price. Queensboro Hill, a sliver of homes located adjacent to Flushing Meadows Corona Park and below Kissena Park, were slightly less pricey, with a median sales price of $843,500. The neighborhood saw a 19 percent increase in median sales price since last year. Not surprisingly, the Ditmars-Steinway area of Astoria and

the Malba section of Whitestone made the list. At 45th, Malba saw a 67 percent decrease in median sales price and a home there will set you back $838,500. At 46th on the list, Ditmars-Steinway only saw a 1 percent increase since last year and the median sales price of a home is $820,000. Lastly, the Belle Harbor section of Rockaway was 49th on the list with a median sales price of $805,000 marking a 15 percent increase in price since last year. Though Queens did not have a large number of neighborhoods on the list, the borough saw the second largest number of sales transactions in terms of single-family homes, condos and co-ops in the third quarter of 2016. About 2,653 sales transactions were made compared to 3,024 in Manhattan, 1,852 in Brooklyn and 510 in the Bronx. Staten Island was not included in this study.

Grover Cleveland High School officially opened its new athletic field in Ridgewood

Grover Cleveland High School opened up their new athletic facility in Ridgewood on Friday, Oct. 14.

P

lay ball! The student athletes at Grover Cleveland High School (GCHS) had plenty of reasons to celebrate on Friday, Oct. 14, as their school officially unveiled the brand-new, $8.5 million athletic field at Seneca and DeKalb avenues in Ridgewood. The school’s soccer and track teams joined GCHS principal Denise Vittor, school staff, state Senator Joseph Addabbo, Councilwoman Elizabeth Crowley, and other local elected officials’ representatives for a ribbon-cutting ceremony opening the new field. The new athletic field has a full-size, AstroTurf soccer pitch with playing lines for boys and girls lacrosse,

regulation-sized softball and baseball fields, a multi-lane track around the perimeter, a state-of-the-art batting cage, and two handball courts and four tennis courts — which were already at the previous field. “We wanted an all-purpose athletic field because space is limited in New York City, but it’s also limited for us, and we have 28 teams,” Vittor said. “We wanted a space where everyone could play, and different sports and seasons would be accommodated.” In February, the school broke ground on the new athletic filed. Only eight months later, it can be hard to

believe that the project is complete, with a fully functioning electronic scoreboard and a beautiful view of the Manhattan skyline.

“This is great for Grover Cleveland. Not too long ago, the city threatened to close Grover Cleveland, and now these are great days ahead and Grover Cleveland keeps impressing me with every school

day,” Addabbo said. “It doesn’t seem too long ago we were when there was all rubble and dirt, and now there is this beautiful field.” T he scho ol w a ste d no time breaking in their new field, as the GCHS soccer team had t he f ield ’s ver y f irst official match immediately following the ribbon-cutting ceremony. “We’ve been waiting four long years to get out here and play on this field again,” said Mike Irizarry, coach of the GCHS soccer team. “[The players] are just as excited as I am. We have five more games this season and we found out that all five games will be played here, so I am looking for a very successful start.”

Christ the King rallies from two down to draw against Cardinal Spellman

BY JOSEPH SWIFT EDITORIAL@RIDGEWOODTIMES.COM @JSWIFTSPORTS

T

he Lady Royals varsity soccer team battled back from a twogoal deficit to draw with Cardinal Spellman High School 3-3 on Wednesday, Oct. 12, at Juniper Valley Park in Middle Village. Christ the King (CTK) came out strong in the opening minutes of the game, as midfielder Karen Pineda netted the first goal to give CTK an early 1-0 lead. The Lady Royals continued to put pressure on the Cardinal Spellman defense, but couldn’t get another goal before halftime. The start of the second half was all Cardinal Spellman as they scored an early goal to knot the game up at 1-1. They managed to score two more goals in the half and held a 3-1 lead over CTK. The Lady Royals were reeling and looking to get back in the game as they were in jeopardy of losing the match. But in the last fifteen minutes, CTK rallied back to score two goals — the first by stopper Diana Aucapina and the second by midfielder Kiana Leger—to tie the game at 3. CTK had a few more good looks, but time ran out and the game ended in a 3-3 draw. Coach of the CTK team, John Fayad, said that his team had total control of the first half, but they just could not finish.

“Whenever you don’t finish your chances you keep a team in the game and that’s what happened. They came back in the second half to score two shots and we had to rally back. For the most part I’m disappointed with the result because I definitely felt that we played better than the other team,” he said. “We get to play them again next week Thursday so I’m pretty sure it’s going to be a different result. I’m not happy with the result but I’m happy with the effort that the girls gave. Just a few goals did not go our way and the ball bounced the wrong way.”
