This Ridgewood beauty school hit twice by wallet thief BY ANTHONY GIUDICE AGIUDICE@RIDGEWOODTIMES.COM @A_GIUDICEREPORT
C
ops are searching for a man who stole a wallet and purse from a beauty school in Ridgewood on two separate occasions over the summer. According to police, on July 20, the unknown suspect — described by law enforcement agents as a Hispanic male, approximately 30 years old, standing 5 feet 10 inches tall, and weighing 230 pounds — entered the Midway Paris Beauty School, located at 54-40 Myrtle Ave., at approximately noon and removed a wallet containing credit cards off of a desk inside the school. Then on Sept. 19, the same unknown suspect returned to the beauty school at approximately 8 p.m. and removed a purse containing credit cards and a coach wallet from a classroom, cops said. No injuries were reported to the responding officers from the 104th Precinct for both incidents. Anyone with information in regards to this incident is asked to call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline at 800-577-TIPS (8477) or for Spanish, 888-57-PISTA (74782). The public can also submit their tips by logging on to the Crime Stoppers website or by texting their tips to 274637 (CRIMES) then enter TIP577. All calls and messages will be kept confidential.

Ridgewood and Maspeth have seen a recent uptick in robberies, 104th Precinct boss says BY ANTHONY GIUDICE AGIUDICE@RIDGEWOODTIMES.COM @A_GIUDICE
A
lthough crime has dropped in the last month, a rash of recent robberies and burglaries across the 104th Precinct has the precinct’s commanding officer concerned. During the 104th Precinct Community Council meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 18, at St. Margaret Parish Hall in Middle Village, Captain Mark Wachter said crime dropped by 2 percent over the most recent 28-day period, but robberies spiked from only eight last year at this time, to 18, a 125 percent increase. Burglaries went up from 16 to 27, for a 68.8 percent increase. Two of those robberies were committed by the same perpetrator, a man who held up two cab drivers — one in Ridgewood and one in Glendale — at gunpoint and stole their property and the keys to the cab. Two delis on Grand Avenue in Maspeth were also robbed, and two males ran out on their check at the Goodfellas Diner. “Burglaries, that’s what driving the crime in the precinct,” Wachter said. “We took 15 burglaries in a week, which is tremendous, it’s a lot

Captain Mark Wachter updated the community on the precinct’s crime stats at the 104th Precinct Community Council meeting. of burglaries in this precinct. We average about three or four a week for the command.” In order to deal with these burglaries, Wachter has redeployed officers to the areas that are being hit the hardest — which have been the Ridgewood and Maspeth areas most recently. This tactic has paid
dividends for the precinct, as burglaries have been reduced back to the average of three burglaries per week. “During the week I’m getting an additional 16 cops a day that we deploy in the Ridgewood/Maspeth area to basically knock these burglaries down,” Wachter said. “We were really able to curtail this activity of burglaries in the Maspeth/Ridgewood area.” Although burglaries and robberies went up last month, felony assaults, grand larcenies and grand larceny auto crimes have all decreased over the last month. Wachter also mentioned the murder that happened in Ridgewood last month when a resident fatally stabbed his roommate. There were also three rapes in the precinct over the last month. With Halloween coming up, Wachter warned those in attendance to be aware of more creepy clown sightings and threats to local grammar and high schools as people like to pull pranks during this time of year. The 104th Precinct Community Council also recognized Police Office Richard Shubella as Cop of the Month for a traffic stop in Maspeth that resulted in the police department taking nearly $14,000 worth of drugs off the streets.

From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Nov. 9, 15 volunteers from New York Cares will assist Flushing-based artist Brittany Baldwin in painting the concrete barriers located along a protective walkway at Queens Boulevard between Woodhaven Boulevard and 59th Avenue. Baldwin’s design is titled “Bounce” and is an abstract design inspired by the rebellious energy of graffiti writers and ancient writing, the artist said. Baldwin concentrated on the interaction between form, line and color in order to capture and convey the excitement of the city in her design. Baldwin is an accomplished artist who was born and raised in Queens, and still lives in the borough. She received the Hugh A. Wilson Award for Excellence in Abstraction from Adelphi University, and her solo exhibitions include “Serious Fun” at Pratt Institute, as well as an upcoming solo show at Adelphi University in January 2017.

here may be improvements on the rise at LaGuardia Airport, but the hub ranks dead last in the United States in on-time performance, according to a report. New data from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics compared passenger traffic at the nation’s top 29 airports. Numbers showed that LaGuardia had the lowest on-time performance, with JFK following close behind. When ranking arrival and departure performance at the 29 major airports year-to-date through August 2016, LaGuardia is last at 73%. JFK Airport sits at #26 with 76%. March was the highest performing month for both airports. July was the worst month for delays so far this year at New York and New Jersey airports. Suzanne Monteverdi
BIG CASH FOR WESTERN QUEENS SCHOOLS
One Queens legislator announced he is allocatingnearly$2.8millionincapitalfundingforschoolsthroughoutwesternQueens. These funds will go toward the purchase of smart boards and laptops, installation of air conditioning systems, and other improvements in the facilities and technology of the district’s schools, according to City Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer. “The most important thing we can do is make sure our children have the tools they need to learn,” Van Bramer said. “That’s why I’ve made investing in schools one of my top priorities, and I’m proud to allocate almost $2.8 million for schools this year, the greatest amount in years. With these funds, our schools can make necessary investments in our children’s education.” Liam Baker
SPECIAL LEAF COLLECTION IN QUEENS
Cleaning up leaves from sidewalks and front yards is a chore, and the Sanitation Department is making it a bit easier for Queens residents to get rid of the fallen foliage. The department is reintroducing next month special leaf collections for the season. Leaf collection is ongoing in areas of Queens such as Glendale, Maspeth and Middle Village that are participating in the Sanitation Department’s Organics Collection program. Throughout the rest of Queens, the Sanitation Department will conduct special leaf collections on two Sundays, Nov. 20 and Dec. 4. Leaves and other organic yard waste (such as grass clippings and branches) should be placed in brown bins or paper bags for pickup. Do not place any organic waste in plastic bags. Ridgewood tenants unite to stay in home BY ANTHONY GIUDICE AGIUDICE@RIDGEWOODTIMES.COM @A_GIUDICEREPORT

he residents who tried to fight a public auction of their Ridgewood apartment building have joined forces to make sure the new landlord doesn’t try to force them out of their homes. The 1819 Cornelia Street Tenants Association was created shortly after the property — at 1819 Cornelia St. — was sold at a public auction by the Queens County Office of the Public Administrator in September after the previous landlord died without leaving a will. According to the Public Administrator, the six-unit, rent-stabilized building was sold for $1.42 million at the Sept. 14 auction. The residents were willing to put up nearly $1 million of their own money to purchase the apartment building and run it as a co-op, but could not make that happen in time. As cases of new owners buying up properties and illegally evicting longtime residents become more and more prevalent, especially in the Ridgewood area, the 1819 Cornelia Street Tenants Association have come together with the Ridgewood

tenants out of rent-stabilized buildings, the 1819 Cornelia Street Tenants Association and the Ridgewood Tenants Union are hosting an outreach event on Saturday, Nov. 5, and the March to Keep Ridgewood Livable for All on Saturday, Nov. 19. “[We want] to let our neighborhood know that tenants have rights,” Coll-Valentin said. “Landlords must be aware that there is a place for the tenants to go for help if they are being harassed by landlords or are forcing false evictions and not to sell out on rent-stabilized apartments which are being bought out by these companies that don’t care about the community; [they] only see dollar signs.” The march is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. on Nov. 5 outside of 1819 Cornelia St. and will end at 350 St. Nicholas Ave., the site of the AB Capstone 17-story, mixed-used development. Councilman Antonio Reynoso, who has been at the forefront of preventing wrongful evictions of rent-stabilized tenants in his district, is planning on attending the march to support his constituents. The Ridgewood Times has reached out to Ridgewood Tenants Union for comment on the march and is awaiting reply.

Grand Avenue in Maspeth is next to get bike lanes BY ANTHONY GIUDICE AGIUDICE@RIDGEWOODTIMES.COM/ @A_GIUDICEREPORT
T
he ever-expanding Queens bicycle network is coming to Grand Avenue in Maspeth. The city Department of Transportation (DOT) is getting ready to install bicycle route markings along Grand Avenue between 69th and 74th streets. These new bike lanes will help reduce speeding along the roadway, organize traffic and add bicycle connections to the current bike lane network. Right now, Grand Avenue has 25-foot travel and parking lanes on both the east and westbound sides. DOT will break that up into a 9-foot parking lane, 5-foot bike lane, and an 11-foot travel lane on both sides. This will give cyclists a dedicated lane, providing them protection. “More people are riding bicycles and the city is making it a priority to safeguard those people as much as possible,” said Gary Giordano, district manager of Community Board 5 (CB 5). “In [DOT’s] opinion, and the community board was agreeable to this, this is just another way of hopefully safeguarding the bicyclists. At the same time, it is very important that bicyclists obey traffic regulations and respect pedestrians and motorists.” Giordano confirmed that high-visibility crosswalks will also be installed as part of this project, which is scheduled to begin in late October, according to DOT. This project was presented to the CB 5 Transportation and Public Transit committees in February as part of a larger plan which includes adding a concrete curb bump-out at the intersection of Mazeau Street, 57th and
Grand avenues, and to convert Mazeau Street to a one-way southbound. DOT is also planning to install a curb extension at the intersection of
69th Place, 69th Lane and 54th Avenue in order to create a direct crosswalk across the intersection, while banning U-Turns there.
However, those plans are not included in the work coming at the end of the month, and aren’t likely to come until the spring, Giordano said.
Sewer repairs in Greater Ridgewood area is Community Board 5’s top budget priorities again BY ANTHONY GIUDICE AGIUDICE@RIDGEWOODTIMES.COM @A_GIUDICEREPORT
T
he aging and often overtaxed sewer systems in Middle Village, Glendale, Maspeth and Ridgewood have caused problems for local residents for years, and Community Board 5 (CB 5) has again made that issue a top priority in its capital budget. Redesigning and reconstructing the sewer system in the portions of the CB 5 area which have seen the worst flooding problems topped the CB 5 Fiscal Year 2018 Capital Budget Priorities list adopted on Wednesday, Oct. 19, at the board’s meeting in Middle Village. This is the second year in a row that this project has been named the community board’s number one priority. In recent months, areas in Glendale and Middle Village have undergone sewer and water main construction, as new, larger pipes have been installed to help the sewer system handle increased amounts of water during periods of heavy rainfall. The top 10 priorities in the Fiscal Year 2018 Capital Budget are as follows: • Redesign and reconstruct the sewer system;
• Provide new catch basins and reconstruct deteriorated catch basins; • Provide new street tree plantings and funding for street tree removals, stump removals, planting of replacement trees, and increased pruning; • Make capital improvements to improve pedestrian and vehicle safety on Grand Avenue at 69th Street, Grand Avenue and the LIE east service road, and at the 69th Street/LIE service road intersections; • Evaluate the structural condition of the elevated M train line, perform repairs and paint the structure; • Fund Phase 2 of the rehabilitation of the Ridgewood Reservoir, including portions of Highland Park; • Repower the polluting Stage Zero freight engines hauling waste through the CB 5 area; • Rehabilitate the Glendale branch of the Queens Library; • Construct an athletic field at the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) Newtown Creek Aeration Facility property; and • Provide replacement of the synthetic turf ballfield and the running track at the west end of Juniper Valley Park.
The construction of the athletic field near Newtown Creek made the biggest jump up from last year’s priority list, moving from 25th to ninth. There was one new item on the priority list, which was to provide a toilet facility in the area of Juniper Valley Park bordered by 80th Street, Dry Harbor Road, Juniper Boulevard North and South, which finished as the 35th priority out of the 36 projects. The board’s top expense budget priorities requested more funding for the following: Assigning more personnel to the 104th Precinct patrol force; Providing field workers to deal with water and sewer operations; Hiring plan examiners and inspectors for the Department of Buildings; Providing Sanitation Department personnel to deal with illegal dumping and litter basket collection; and Providing funding for educational and recreational programs for children and teens. “This is some of the most important work, in my opinion, that the community board does during the year,” said Gary Giordano, district manager of CB 5. “It helps influence the city budget.” The board voted unanimously to accept the expense budget priorities as well.

MASPETH SHELTER WAR
Dispute over what lawmaker knew about Maspeth shelter plan — and when
RIDGEWOOD TIMES/File photos
They said, she said: a source with the Department of Social Services claims Commissioner Steven Banks (at left) told Councilwoman Elizabeth Crowley (at right) about the proposed homeless shelter at a Maspeth hotel (background) two months before it was officially announced.
BY ROBERT POZARYCKI RPOZARYCKI@RIDGEWOODTIMES.COM @ROBBPOZ
C
ity Social Services Commissioner Steven Banks informed Councilwoman Elizabeth Crowley about the proposed homeless shelter in Maspeth more than two months before it was officially announced, according to a source with the Department of Social Services (DSS). The source told the Ridgewood Times on Oct. 20 that Banks and Crowley exchanged phone calls “several times before the Aug. 3 community meeting” at the Maspeth library, where city officials announced plans to convert the Holiday Inn Express on 55th Road into a homeless shelter for up to 220 adults. Earlier this month, the city ultimately halted that plan and instead rented hotel rooms to indefinitely house 30 homeless men. The earliest Crowley knew about the shelter plan, according to the DSS source, was in May at an initial meeting between Crowley and Banks. They had met on May 19 at Crowley’s legislative office in Manhattan and “subsequently had a number of
additional, detailed in-person and telephone conversations” about the proposal. The Ridgewood Times has requested from DSS any recordings taken of those conversations. “At the May 19 meeting, Department of Social Services Commissioner Steven Banks informed Council Member Crowley that there were plans by a nonprofit service provider to convert the Holiday Inn in Maspeth from a commercial hotel into a homeless shelter for adult families, and that there was an urgent need for additional shelter capacity immediately,” the source said. Crowley’s office acknowledged that she had met with Banks on May 19, but the session was a rather general one focused on homeless matters and the 2017 city budget, as budget negotiations were underway at the time. Crowley had requested that meeting with Banks in an April 28 email, a copy of which was provided to the Ridgewood Times. In a statement to the Ridgewood Times, the councilwoman vehemently denied claims that she knew about the Maspeth shelter proposal well in advance of the August announcement: “I met with Steve Banks on May 19 at
my request, where no specific plan for a shelter was discussed. On July 14, I had a conversation with the administration assuring me that there was no shelter proposal for my district. Three weeks later, we hear they want to move 110 families into the Maspeth Holiday Inn. As we have seen in the past, this administration has a bad record when it comes to being forthright, and I am disappointed they would make this accusation instead of dealing with the problem at hand – homelessness in New York City.” A spokesperson for Crowley said the July 14 conversation involved Emma Wolfe, director of intergovernmental affairs for the Mayor’s Office, who told Crowley that there were no plans for a homeless shelter anywhere in Crowley’s district. The Ridgewood Times reached out to Wolfe and is awaiting a response. Crowley had some choice words for Banks at an Oct. 19 meeting of the Queens Borough Board at Borough Hall in Kew Gardens; Banks was on hand to provide a report on the agency’s efforts to tackle the homeless crisis. She blasted Banks, claiming that he lied to the community about the Maspeth plan.
Banks refuted the accusations and revealed that he met with Crowley in June about the Maspeth shelter; Crowley insisted that the plan was a surprise to her. As the neighborhood’s elected representative in the City Council, Crowley would figure to have the most sway of any other lawmaker in the community regarding public policy before the city, including the homeless shelter proposal. Residents in the area have relentlessly opposed the plan, holding nightly rallies outside the hotel and other protests in other parts of the city, including one in front of Banks’ Brooklyn home. Crowley herself, along with other area elected officials, have felt the protesters’ rage as well. Although the councilwoman had repeatedly expressed her opposition to the plan, some of the protesters have questioned her resolve on the matter. There was even speculation of a secret deal favoring a Maspeth shelter over one planned for Glendale, but Crowley and the city have both denied such a deal’s existence. Even with the hotel conversion plan stopped, the protests outside the hotel have continued. Some have suggested the mere placement of a number of homeless men at the hotel is a sign that the shelter’s creation is inevitable.

POLICE BEAT
COPS FIND LAUNDRY BAGS FILLED WITH 10 POUNDS OF MARIJUANA AT REGO PARK APARTMENT Talk about pot luck. Officers responding to a domestic dispute at a Rego Park apartment building on Saturday night wound up seizing more than 10 pounds of marijuana discovered at the residence. The trouble began at about 10:40 p.m. on the night of Oct. 22, when officers assigned to the 112th Precinct arrived at an apartment house on Queens Boulevard near 65th Road after receiving a 911 call about an assault in one of the apartments. According to the criminal complaint provided by the Queens District
Attorney’s office, Police Officer Nicole Atkinson arrived at the location and heard a man and woman arguing inside an apartment. The officer knocked on the door and identified herself as police, but the man inside the residence refused to open the door. Officer Atkinson then went an apartment one floor above the residence and climbed onto the fire escape, walking down to the unit where the argument was taking place. She found on the fire escape two large laundry bags and observed the arguing man — Richard Perreira, 27 — reach out the window and pull one of the bags inside. Law enforcement sources said the officer then observed Perreira as he walked to another

window in the apartment and threw the bag out of it. The bag landed on the street near where Police Officer Kurt Anderson stood. Officer Anderson opened the bag and found several vacuum-sealed packs of marijuana and marijuana residue inside of it. Police recovered the second laundry bag, which also contained vacuum-sealed marijuana packs. In total, the marijuana seized had a street value of about $48,000. The 112th Precinct displayed the seized marijuana in a post on its Twitter account on Sunday night: Following questioning, Perreira was arrested on charges of criminal possession of marijuana; he was subsequently released on $5,000 cash bail, according to court records.
TEENAGER KILLED, ANOTHER INJURED AFTER BEING STRUCK BY CAR IN OZONE PARK Two teenage girls were struck by a car at an Ozone Park intersection on Monday morning, and one of them has died of her injuries, according to police. Authorities said the incident occurred at 6:42 a.m. at the corner of Cross Bay Boulevard and 149th Avenue, a short distance from J.H.S. 202. Law enforcement sources said Jazmine Marin, 13, of 107th Avenue in Richmond Hill and another 13-year-old girl were crossing the boulevard eastbound about 20 feet south of 149th Avenue when they were hit by a green Chevrolet sedan operated by a 65-year-old man traveling southbound on Cross Bay Boulevard. The driver stopped his vehicle and remained at the scene following the incident.
Officers from the 106th Precinct and EMS units rushed to the location. Both girls were taken to Jamaica Hospital; Marin, who suffered severe head trauma, was pronounced dead on arrival. The other teenager sustained a leg injury and is listed in stable condition.
No charges have been filed against the driver, and an investigation is ongoing.

Making bike lanes work in Queens B ike lanes in Queens are about as polarizing as a presidential candidate. Those who love them really love them; those who hate them really hate them. More Queens residents are turning to bicycles as a primary mode of transportation. Because of this, the city Department of Transportation (DOT) has been scrambling to expand its bike lane network throughout the borough to more safely accommodate the increasing number of bicyclists competing with cars, trucks and buses for road space. It does not take a doctorate degree in physics to know that bicyclists are at greater risk of injury and death from being struck by vehicles. The rider doesn’t have a protective chassis around them to absorb any impact from a larger rig. The bicycles can’t be on the sidewalks, either, as their presence puts pedestrians in harm’s way. The most important thing to understand, however, is that the bike lanes need to be placed on streets that can accommodate them. The service roads
of Queens Boulevard are one excellent example of this, as there remains four lanes of traffic in each direction on the boulevard for other vehicles. The bike lanes also have the dual functionality of being a safety component designed to slow vehicles down on the roadway notoriously known as the “Boulevard of Death” for the high frequency of deadly traffic accidents. The DOT now wants to install bike lanes along Grand Avenue in Maspeth, and that makes us cringe. While it may be the neighborhood’s main thoroughfare, Grand Avenue is also a traffic headache, with one lane available in each direction and usually backed up with all kinds of cars, trucks and buses. Try navigating through the intersection of Grand and Flushing avenues at rush hour on a weekday and you’ll see what we mean. Even with the introduction of bike lanes, we’re not sure how any bicyclist could feel safe riding along Grand Avenue, a road far more narrow than Queens Boulevard but with just as much traffic congestion on a daily basis.
T he DOT oug ht to consider another route through Maspeth, perhaps utilizing the Long Island Expressway service roads (Borden Avenue) and 57th Avenue, streets which are wider and not as regularly congested as Grand Avenue.
Whether we like them or not, bike lanes are a necessary component of Queens’ transit infrastructure in the 21st century. Bicyclists deserve to have a safe space on major roadways in order to get around with some degree of comfort that they won’t be seriously injured or killed in a traffic accident.

HAPPY 109TH ANNIVERSARY TO THE NYC SUBWAY SYSTEM BY LARRY PENNER
O
ct. 27 marks the 109th anniversary of our New York City subway system. The original BMT (Brooklyn Manhattan Rapid Transit — today’s B, D, J, M, N, Q, R and Z lines) and IRT (Interboro Rapid Transit — 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, Franklin Ave. and Times Square shuttles) subway systems were constructed and managed by the private sector with no government operating subsidies. Financial viability was 100 percent dependent upon farebox revenues. They supported both development and economic growth of numerous neighborhoods in the boroughs of Manhattan, Brooklyn, Bronx and Queens. As part of the franchise agreement which owners had to sign, City Hall had direct control over the fare structure. For a period of time, owners actually made a profit with a 5 cent fare. After two decades passed, the costs of salaries, maintenance, power, supplies and equipment would pressure owners to ask City Hall for permission to raise the fares. This additional revenue was needed to keep up with maintaining a good state of repair, increase the frequency of service, purchase new subway cars, pay employee salary increases and support planned system expansion. Politicians more interested in the next reelection (and subscribing to the old Roman philosophy of free bread and circuses) refused this request each year for well over a decade. As a result, in order to survive, owners of both systems began looking elsewhere to reduce costs and stay in business. They started curtailing basic maintenance, delayed purchases of new subway cars, postponed salary
increases for employees, canceled any plans for system expansion and cut corners to survive. Does any of this sound familiar from the present? Today, the MTA New York City Transit’s new Fastrack initiative is using an entirely new way to perform subway maintenance in our system. By completely suspending train service over a segment of a subway line, workers have uninterrupted access to tracks, signals, cables, lighting, third rail components and platform edges. Many Fastrack line shutdowns were completed this year, which resulted in an unprecedented amount of work being accomplished. Most importantly, Fastrack resulted in a safer and more efficient environment for employees to inspect, maintain and clean our 24/7 subway system. Transit employees inspected hundreds of signals and switches, repaired and replaced track rails and cross ties, cleaned track floors, performed elevator and escalator repair work, repaired water damage, cleared drains, cleaned stations and repainted areas that had not been touched in years because they are not reachable during normal train operation. They cleaned lighting fixtures, changed bulbs and repaired platform edges. Employees also performed high-intensity station cleaning. These maintenance activities improve train performance and efficiency while also providing a visible improvement to the station environment. Larry Penner is a transportation historian and advocate who previously worked 31 years for the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Transit Administration Region 2 New York Office.
A LOOK BACK This one’s a real treat. Here’s a rare glimpse of the Myrtle Avenue streetscape at night during the 1950s, found on the Facebook page “You must have lived in Ridgewood if you remember...” Note the marquee of the RKO Madison Theater in the background, which at the time was one of the neighborhood’s many moviehouses. Eight candidates for seven state Supreme Court seats on November ballot BY ROBERT POZARYCKI RPOZARYCKI@QNS.COM/@ROBBPOZ
A
long with the presidential race and a host of legislative contests in the Nov. 8 general election, voters in Queens will also make their choices as to who will represent them on the state Supreme Court. Seven Supreme Court Justice seats for the 11th Judicial District covering Queens will be on the ballot, and there are eight candidates to choose from. Voters can choose seven of the candidates. The State Supreme Court in Queens handles not only civil matters but also felony criminal cases. Supreme Court Justices preside over lawsuits in which plaintiffs seek damages in excess of $25,000 as well as divorce proceedings, legal injunctions, criminal arraignments and both civil and criminal trials. Four Supreme Court candidates secured the nominations of the Democratic, Republican and Conservative parties: Marguerite A. Grays
of Cambria Heights; Joseph Esposito of Astoria; William A. Viscovich of Whitestone and Joseph A. Zayas of Little Neck. Another candidate, Margaret A. McGowan of Whitestone, secured the Democratic and Republican party lines, while Joseph F. Kasper of South Ozone Park is running on the Republican and Conservative lines.

OF BUTCHERING…
66-03 Myrtle Avenue in GLENDALE!
718-628-7300
Mark Cacioppo, head butcher and owner of DiMarco’s Butcher Shoppe knows meat, for sure! The admiration for his craft began when he was a teenager, working as an apprentice butcher in Forest Hills. He continued on his journey and worked in top rated butcher shops…carefully studied meats, and developed broad-based knowledge in the meat process from beginning to end. Mark is an expert on how meat age rotation is handled, as well as the process with which beef needs to be properly aged to ensure tenderness and flavor. This process involves a skill and style where meats are much more flavorful and tender. Mark is a graduate of the Institute of Culinary Education, formally Peter Kumps in NYC. He’s trained and worked in some of the famous kitchens in NYC. He started DiMarco’s Butcher Shop, on a smaller scale, at the Amish Market in Atlas Park, served as meat manager at BJ’s Wholesale Club, and worked at Ottominelli’s Brothers in NYC. He’s also gained vast experience on the wholesale level as a sales rep at the famous DeBragga and Spitler Meat Distributors, and has served as advisor to butchers and chefs from all over the City. Whether he’s recommending a particular cut of meat, or offering a special recipe, Mark’s goal is to provide to his customers at DiMarco’s Butcher Shoppe, the ultimate dining experience…with expert personalized service. Mark personally inspects and scrutinizes all his meats at DiMarco’s Butcher Shop for quality, color, marbling and texture. Come see for yourself the ‘true art of expert butchering’ at DiMarco’s Butcher Shop! Mark is looking forward to providing the community with highly personalized service, and quality cuts at great prices. He will be carrying a full line of certified Angus beef, dry aged beef, game meat, all natural pork, homemade sausage, young lamb and goat, fresh holiday turkeys, suckling pigs, and antibiotic-free chicken. Visit the butcher shop to indulge in DiMarco’s flavorful homestyle cooking, appetizing deli products, and fresh pasta. Mark is looking forward to building long, personalized business relationships with the entire community. Feel free to stop in and visit Mark at DiMarco’s, 66-03 Myrtle Avenue, Glendale , for advice on meats or for special meat requests.

ARTS & LEISURE
Ridgewood students get to use latest tech during John Lennon tour bus visit — as New Yorkers are invited to come together to create original music, videos, poetry and art around their central “Come Together” theme. The projects created will focus on telling the powerful and moving stories of New York City immigrants as part of a Cultural Immigrant Initiative through the NYC Council and Department of Cultural Affairs. These stories will be featured in a compilation of original music, videos, interviews, art works, photos and poetry which will premiere at the end of the tour at an event hosted by the Lennon Photos courtesy of The John Lennon Educational Tour Bus presented by Canon USA. Success profile: Banker Leonard Stekol Victoria’s Secrets
Victoria
SCHNEPS-YUNIS
vschneps@ gmail.com
tweet me @vschneps
From emigrating with his family from Latvia in 1979, to his position today as the president of Ridgewood Savings Bank, Leonard Stekol is living a dream. “This is the greatest country in the world,” he said, as the recently elevated president who has been with the 95-year-old Bank for 23 years. His elevation to president and COO in July was a journey of hard work from a trainee in the audit department to his current position. As the largest mutual savings Bank in New York State with $5.3 billion in assets, Ridgewood Savings Bank is “owned” by its depositors and has always been rooted in the communities it serves. With branches across the New York metropolitan area and with 55,000 free ATMs available nationwide to its customers, the Bank’s footprint continues to grow. There are 10 branches in Queens, including the corporate office in Ridgewood, where the bank was born in 1921 in a converted taproom located at the intersection of Myrtle and Forest Avenues. The 14 founders personally handed
out flyers to encourage neighbors to put their money in what started as the Savings Bank of Ridgewood. The cornerstone for their new headquarters, now a historic building, was laid in the bank’s original location in 1929 when the name was changed to Ridgewood Savings Bank. When the Great Depression came, the bank weathered the storm. Where many banks failed, it survived based on their unique relationship with the people they served. I love the bank’s motto, “Multiply the Good.” Just this past weekend, the bank opened its parking lot for a Fall Festival, entertaining the neighborhood children with various games and face painting, and giving away pumpkins. The bank’s list of support for civic, educational and philanthropic organizations fills pages in its annual Statement of Condition. It’s obvious the bank believes in the communities it serves, and its customers have enabled it to grow into 34 branches in Queens, Brooklyn, Bronx, Manhattan, Nassau, Suffolk and Westchester, which includes a Mobile Bank branch serving assisted living centers and visiting elementary schools to further promote the bank’s “Teach Children to Save” program. As a graduate of Queens College and a CPA, Leonard Stekol will strive to work with the management and the board, continuing to move the bank forward with new branches and services. He believes in the bank’s motto emphasizing the power of what can happen when you “multiply the good.” The future of his leadership and accomplishments speaks volumes
about the power of the United States offering opportunities to people like Leonard Stekol – a man who came
from another country and is making a positive impact for his family and the community.

Answering common questions on funeral planning
I
f you are planning a funeral, you have many decisions to make. You may feel overwhelmed or confused. You may have questions. Here are some common questions and answers from the New York State Department of Health.
clearly listed on both the General Price List and the Itemized Statement of Services.
WHAT CAN I DO IF I FEEL THE PRICES ARE TOO HIGH?
You can call several funeral homes and compare prices. (Funeral homes are required to give price information over the telephone.) If you’ve shopped around and the price is still too high, you may have to reconsider your selections.
WHO CAN MAKE FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS?
The “customer.” It’s very important for family members to agree about the type of services and merchandise to be purchased. Ideally, the family should designate one person to make the arrangements and to convey the family decisions to the funeral director. The customer will be responsible for the payment of the bill.
DO I NEED A FUNERAL DIRECTOR?
Yes. In New York State, only a licensed and registered funeral director may make funeral arrangements for the care, moving, preparation and burial or cremation of a deceased person. At the least, the funeral director will file the death certificate, transfer the body, coordinate with cemetery or crematory representatives, make the necessary preparations, and move the body to the cemetery or crematory.
CAN I PREPAY MY FUNERAL?
WHAT WILL THE FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS COST?
The costs of funeral arrangements vary greatly, depending on the funeral home and on the type of service and merchandise you choose. For example, if the service you select involves viewing the remains, the funeral home may require embalming and preparation of the body, which can be expensive. Also, there is a tremendous range in the price of caskets, depending on style, type of wood, lining, etc. The least expensive type of funeral service is direct burial or direct cremation.

QUEENS REAL ESTATE SALE PRICES KEEP CLIMBING HIGHER AND HIGHER, REPORT FINDS BY SUZANNE MONTEVERDI SMONTEVERDI@QNS.COM @SMONT76
R
eal estate prices are on the rise citywide and throughout the borough, according to a recent report. Residential sales data published by the Real Estate Board of New York (REBNY) examines the average sales prices for cooperatives, condominiums and one- to three-family dwellings in the city and within each of the five boroughs. According to the study, the New York City residential sales market posted a record $13.6 billion in citywide total monetary value for completed home sales transactions in the third quarter of 2016 — a 15 percent rise when compared with the third quarter of 2015. All five boroughs posted year-overyear increases in the average sales price for a home. In Queens, average
sales price for a home (including cooperatives, condominiums and one- to three-family dwellings) increased 6 percent to $523,000, while home sales volume year-over-year increased a total of 7 percent to 4,303 units. Overall, total residential sales consideration rose 12 percent to $2.25 billion in the borough year-to-year. When examining Queens
neighborhoods, Flushing recorded the most condominium sales in Queens this quarter with 86 units — an increase of 28 percent from last year’s third quarter. The average sales price was listed at $518,000, which is a 6 percent increase year-over-year. Long Island City recorded the highest average condo price per square foot for the quarter at $1,195, as well
the as highest average co-op sale price coming in at $441,000. When examining average one- to three-family dwelling sale prices, Long Island City was highest at $1,902,000, followed by Astoria at $1,093,000 and Jamaica Estates/Holliswood at $1,025,000. “The record total transactional value and uptick in home sales completed this quarter represent the health of the residential market citywide,” said John Banks, III, REBNY president. “The slight pause felt last quarter was redirected through the hot summer season and this heightened activity sets us up for a promising remainder of 2016.” The Real Estate Board of New York is the City’s leading real estate trade association which publishes reports providing indicators of market prices for both the residential and commercial sectors.

Maspeth's Lady Argonauts score pair of volleyball wins over Adams, Beach BY JOSEPH SWIFT EDITORIAL@RIDGEWOODTIMES.COM @JSWIFTSPORTS
T
he Maspeth High School girls varsity volleyball team defeated John Adams High School by a score of 2-0 on Friday, Oct. 14, in Ozone Park. The Lady Argos won the first two matches of the game, 25-13 and 25-17, respectively. In the third match of the game, neither team scored any points. Maspeth’s outside hitter Gabriela Cid had a big game with 17 service points, six aces, 12 digs and three kills. Her contribution to the team helped secure their victory over John Adams. “As a team, we did great,” Cid said after the game. “We did a lot of hitting
and I feel like our servers were the number one thing that helped us win the game.” Coach Gerald Matacotta was pleased with his team’s effort and execution. “We did very well. We followed our game plan. We were disciplined,” Matacotta said. “We attacked, and kept attacking on the serve as well as the hit. The team had varied attacks, so it’s hard to say what player was the best because we got good offence out of all our players. We kept the ball in play the whole time so that adds up into a win.” On Friday, Oct. 21, the Lady Argos defeated Beach Channel 2-0 at Marin van Buren High School. Photos by Joseph Swift

T
he Blau Weiss Gottschee (BWG) soccer club is crossing borders to help disadvantaged youth learn the “beautiful game.” On Oct. 8, Jesse Jacob, a member of the BWG 99/00 Pre Academy team, led two soccer clinics for children living in care homes on the Caribbean island of Grenada. He created the program
for Reach Within, a Grenada-based charity dedicated to improving the quality of life for children and teens who have experienced adversity. BWG donated most of the soccer equipment which will remain in Grenada so the program can continue. On the pitch BWG came away with a big win against the New York
City Football Club (NYCFC) Academy team. On Sunday, Oct. 16, at Aviator Field, the BWG U16 team matched up against a talented NYCFC Academy team and came away with a deserved 2-1 victory. After squandering a number of early chances, BWG went up 1-0 on a Joseph Koroma goal.

he St. John’s Red Storm dropped their second BIG EAST match on Saturday, Oct. 22, to Georgetown, 1-0 in a game where the swirling winds were a major factor on the pitch, as gusts reached as high as 40 miles per hour in the area. The only goal of the game came in the eighth minute as Zach Knudson of the Hoyas beat his defender on the left side before passing to Brett Campbell, who finished on
In the second half, NYCFC came out strong and tied the game up 1-1. Ten minutes later, BWG took the lead on a Diego Montes goal and controlled the game from then on out for an impressive 2-1 victory. With the win, the U16s are currently tied for first place in the Northeast Division.
the ground to give the Hoyas a 1-0 lead. The Red Storm fought back with several shots on goal in the 24th minute, but could not find the equalizer. The second half was much of the same, as both teams were unable to find the back of the net. Despite the loss, redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Andrew Withers recorded a season-high six saves. With the loss, the St. John’s fell to 6-4-4 on the season, with a 2-2-2 record in the BIG EAST. The Hoyas improved to 5-8-4 overall with a 2-3-1 record in league games.
